Abstract
Molecular nanographenes (NGs) are nanoscale graphene fragments obtained by organic synthetic protocols. Here we report the bottom-up synthesis of two spiro-NGs formed by two substituted hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs), spiro-NG and F-spiro-NG. The X-ray crystal structure of the deca-tert-butyl-functionalized spiro-NG shows a bilayer disposition of the HBCs in face-to-face contact. By contrast, F-spiro-NG, which features tert-butyl substituents on one HBC unit, and fluorine on the other HBC unit, is an electron donor-acceptor bilayer NG. The structural assembly of the donor and acceptor graphenic layers enables an electron-transfer process that leads to the formation of a zwitterionic open shell, paramagnetic species constituted by a radical cation and a radical anion located in the donor and the acceptor HBCs, respectively. Magnetic and spectroelectrochemical experiments, together with theoretical calculations, support the persistent/dominant charge-separated nature of F-spiro-NG. Furthermore, photoconductivity measurements show a significant increase of the charge carrier mobility in the case of F-spiro-NG (Σμ = 6 cm2 V-1 s-1) compared with spiro-NG.

Abstract
Dibenzoperioctacene (DBPO) with extended zigzag edges was synthesized and unambiguously characterized by a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Variable-temperature (VT) NMR analysis indicated the closed-shell character of DBPO, yet the bond lengths in the single-crystal structure of DBPO aligned more closely with those of open-shell teranthene than closed-shell bisanthene. Spin-unrestricted density functional theory (DFT) calculations using various methods supported that ground state of DBPO might be on the borderline between closed- and open-shell singlet states, with a large singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔEST), consistent with the VT NMR and bond-length analyses. UV/Vis-near infrared (NIR) absorption spectrum showed the longest-wavelength peak at 905 nm, marking the NIR optical properties of DBPO. DBPO exhibited a tendency to react with atmospheric oxygen, which additionally hinted at its possible open-shell character. Furthermore, the oxidized species of non-fluorescent DBPO exhibited strong emission at 820 and 915 nm.

Abstract
The inherent helical chirality and improved π-stacking capabilities endow helicenes with fascinating photophysical characteristics when decorated with lateral π-extensions. Here, we report the synthesis and physicochemical characterization of expanded hetero[6]helicenes fused with thiadiazole and selenadiazole rings at the helical ends. Comparing these heterohelicenes revealed the impact of the heteroatom-embedded aromatic rings on the excited state and redox features. A small structural variation of the terminal rings from thiadiazole to selenadiazole caused a striking change in the heterohelical nanographenes.

Abstract
Motivated by the success of 9,9'-spirobifluorene (SBF) in optoelectronic materials, we synthesized a novel spiro compound, spirophenanthrene (SP). Incorporating a phenanthrene unit as the core, we aimed to leverage the π-conjugation of SPs to surpass the limitations of SBF. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed significant advantages over SBF, including red-shifted wavelengths, tunable LUMO energy levels, and enhanced thermal stability. These advantages suggest the potential of SPs as versatile building blocks for diverse optoelectronic devices.

Abstract
The development of architecturally unique molecular nanocarbons by bottom-up organic synthesis is essential for accessing functional organic materials awaiting technological developments in fields such as energy, electronics, and biomedicine. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of a triptycene-based three-dimensional (3D) nanocarbon, GFN-1, with geometrical flexibility on account of its three peripheral π-panels being capable of interconverting between two curved conformations. An effective through-space electronic communication among the three π-panels of GFN-1 has been observed in its monocationic radical form, which exhibits an extensively delocalized spin density over the entire 3D π-system as revealed by electron paramagnetic resonance and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopies. The flexible 3D molecular architecture of GFN-1, along with its densely packed superstructures in the presence of fullerenes, is revealed by microcrystal electron diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which establish the coexistence of both propeller and tweezer conformations in the solid state. GFN-1 exhibits strong binding affinities for fullerenes, leading to host-guest complexes that display rapid photoinduced electron transfer within a picosecond. The outcomes of this research could pave the way for the utilization of shape and electronically complementary nanocarbons in the construction of functional coassemblies.

Abstract
Herein, we explored the oxidative coupling reactions of carbazole-based polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using traditional Scholl reactions and electrochemical oxidation. Our findings indicate that the oxidation predominantly occurs at the carbazole functional group. The underlying reaction mechanisms were also clarified through theoretical investigations, highlighting that the primary oxidation pathway involves the 3,6-positions of the carbazole moiety, which is attributable to its high electron density.

Abstract
The intriguing and rich photophysical properties of three curved nanographenes (CNG 6, 7, and 8) are investigated by time-resolved and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. CNG 7 and 8 exhibit dual fluorescence, as well as dual phosphorescence at low temperature in the main PL bands. In addition, hot bands are detected in fluorescence as well as phosphorescence, and, in the narrow temperature range of 100-140 K, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with lifetimes on the millisecond time-scale is observed. These findings are rationalized by quantum-chemical simulations, which predict a single minimum of the S1 potential of CNG 6, but two S1 minima for CNG 7 and CNG 8, with considerable geometric reorganization between them, in agreement with the experimental findings. Additionally, a higher-lying S2 minimum close to S1 is optimized for the three CNG, from where emission is also possible due to thermal activation and, hence, non-Kasha behavior. The presence of higher-lying dark triplet states close to the S1 minima provides mechanistic evidence for the TADF phenomena observed. Non-radiative decay of the T1 state appears to be thermally activated with activation energies of roughly 100 meV and leads to disappearance of phosphorescence and TADF at T > 140 K.

Abstract
To investigate the mechanism of this spiro conjugation magnetic behavior, we designed and synthesized three diradicals─22'SBF-NN, 44'SBF-NN, and 27SBF-NN. They are bridged by spirobifluorene and nitronyl nitroxide (NN) diradicals as the spin centers. Notably, by SQUID and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) zero-field splitting data analyses, the 22'SBF-NN and 27SBF-NN diradicals exhibit intramolecular, distinctly antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling, with 2J(22'SBF-NN)/kB = -5.86 K and 2J(27SBF-NN)/kB = -24.6 K, respectively. The AF of 22'SBF-NN is opposite to that predicted by the spin density alternation rule based on Hund's rule. Diradical intramolecular conjugation coupling bridged by spiro-carbon conjugation is discussed, in which the 22'SBF-NN is smaller than that of 27SBF-NN, corresponding to the room-temperature EPR characterization. This spiro conjugation is weaker than the traditional planar conjugation and generally leads to a weaker spin-spin coupling in the helical biradical molecule. The EPR spectrum of the 44'SBF-NN diradical shows a deformed nine-line curve, indicating intramolecular exchange coupling. The density functional theory calculation gives a very weak coupling constant of 2Jcalc/kB = 0.06 K, with ferromagnetic (FM) interaction as the proof, which is consistent with the spin-polarized prediction. Further analysis of magnetic susceptibility χm and VT-EPR data shows that there is indeed an extremely weak FM interaction in the 44' position diradical. We find the bridge, which is a 44' substituted SBF structure, blocks the conjugation and contains a larger twist in steric hindrance, which also hampers sufficient spin density delocalization, resulting in a much weaker spin coupling interaction. Combined with the analysis of molecular orbital calculation results, the anomalous intramolecular AF coupling mechanism of 22'SBF-NN is further explained.

Abstract
A rigid wing-shaped bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene-fused bis-hexapyrrolohexaazacoronene (HPHAC) is synthesized, and subsequent chemical oxidation affords a stable biradical dication and an aromatic tetracation. The physicochemical properties and single-crystal structures in various oxidation states are characterized. The face-to-face π-stacked dimeric structures are observed in the neutral and dicationic states. The HPHAC flakes can act as aromatic walls in a tetracation state, producing enlarged induced magnetic shielding space through the superimposition effect.

Abstract
The synthesis of a new molecule, SFIC-Cl, is reported, which features enhanced π-electron delocalization by spiroconjugation and narrowed bandgap by chlorination. SFIC-Cl is integrated into a single-crystal transistor (OFET) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The material demonstrates remarkable transport abilities across various solution-processed OFETs and retains efficient radiance in a near-infrared OLED emitting light at 700 nm. Furthermore, the intermolecular multi-dimensional connection of SFIC-Cl enables the fabrication of a single-component large-area (2 × 2 cm2 ) near-infrared OLED by spin-coating. The SFIC-Cl-acceptor-based solar cell shows excellent power conversion efficiency of 10.16% resulting from the broadened and strong absorption and well-matched energy levels. The study demonstrates that chlorinated spiroconjugated fused systems offer a novel direction toward the development of high-performance organic semiconductor materials for hybrid organic electronic devices.

Abstract
A new family of distorted ribbon-shaped nanographenes was designed, synthesized, and their optical and electrochemical properties were evaluated, pointing out an unprecedented correlation between their structural characteristics and the two-photon absorption (TPA) responses and electrochemical band gaps. Three nanographene ribbons have been prepared: a seven-membered-ring-containing nanographene presenting a tropone moiety at the edge, its full-carbon analogue, and a purely hexagonal one. We have found that the TPA cross-sections and the electrochemical band gaps of the seven-membered-ring-containing compounds are higher and lower, respectively, than those of the fully hexagonal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). Interestingly, the inclusion of additional curvature has a positive effect in terms of non-linear optical properties of those ribbons.

Abstract
This perspective article summarizes recent applications of the combination of the activation strain model of reactivity and the energy decomposition analysis methods to the study of the reactivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and related compounds such as cycloparaphenylenes, fullerenes and doped systems. To this end, we have selected representative examples to highlight the usefulness of this relatively novel computational approach to gain quantitative insight into the factors controlling the so far not fully understood reactivity of these species. Issues such as the influence of the size and curvature of the system on the reactivity are covered herein, which is crucial for the rational design of novel compounds with tuneable applications in different fields such as materials science or medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
A novel spiro-fused terrylene dimer (SDT) was designed and synthesized by a dissymmetric spiro-fusion strategy. The spiro-conjugation effect caused a distinct red-shift and enhancement of the absorption spectrum. Two chiral enantiomers of SDT have been absolutely resolved and identified in combination with theoretical calculations. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement revealed its potential as a near-infrared chiral luminescent material.
