The nature of frontier orbitals under systematic ligand exchange in (pseudo-)octahedral Fe(ii) complexes

Time-Dependent Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of Pyrazine at the Nitrogen K-Edge: A Quantum Dynamics Approach

We calculate resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectra of pyrazine at the nitrogen K-edge in the time domain including wavepacket dynamics in both the valence and core-excited state manifolds. Upon resonant excitation, we observe ultrafast non-adiabatic population transfer between core-excited states within the core-hole lifetime, leading to molecular symmetry distortions. Importantly, our time-domain approach inherently contains the ability to manipulate the dynamics of this process by detuning the excitation energy, which effectively shortens the scattering duration. We also explore the impact of pulsed incident X-ray radiation, which provides a foundation for state-of-the-art time-resolved experiments with coherent pulsed light sources.

Accessing metal-specific orbital interactions in C-H activation with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Photochemically prepared transition-metal complexes are known to be effective at cleaving the strong C-H bonds of organic molecules in room temperature solutions. There is also ample theoretical evidence that the two-way, metal to ligand (MLCT) and ligand to metal (LMCT), charge-transfer between an incoming alkane C-H group and the transition metal is the decisive interaction in the C-H activation reaction. What is missing, however, are experimental methods to directly probe these interactions in order to reveal what determines reactivity of intermediates and the rate of the reaction. Here, using quantum chemical simulations we predict and propose future time-resolved valence-to-core resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (VtC-RIXS) experiments at the transition metal L-edge as a method to provide a full account of the evolution of metal-alkane interactions during transition-metal mediated C-H activation reactions. For the model system cyclopentadienyl rhodium dicarbonyl (CpRh(CO)2), we demonstrate, by simulating the VtC-RIXS signatures of key intermediates in the C-H activation pathway, how the Rh-centered valence-excited states accessible through VtC-RIXS directly reflect changes in donation and back-donation between the alkane C-H group and the transition metal as the reaction proceeds via those intermediates. We benchmark and validate our quantum chemical simulations against experimental steady-state measurements of CpRh(CO)2 and Rh(acac)(CO)2 (where acac is acetylacetonate). Our study constitutes the first step towards establishing VtC-RIXS as a new experimental observable for probing reactivity of C-H activation reactions. More generally, the study further motivates the use of time-resolved VtC-RIXS to follow the valence electronic structure evolution along photochemical, photoinitiated and photocatalytic reactions with transition metal complexes.

From the Free Ligand to the Transition Metal Complex: FeEDTA- Formation Seen at Ligand K-Edges

Chelating agents are an integral part of transition metal complex chemistry with broad biological and industrial relevance. The hexadentate chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has the capability to bind to metal ions at its two nitrogen and four of its carboxylate oxygen sites. We use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the 1s absorption edge of the aforementioned elements in EDTA and the iron(III)-EDTA complex to investigate the impact of the metal–ligand bond formation on the electronic structure of EDTA. Frontier orbital distortions, occupation changes, and energy shifts through metal–ligand bond formation are probed through distinct spectroscopic signatures.

Metal-ligand interactions between the hexadentate chelating agent EDTA and iron(III) ions in the high spin iron(III)-EDTA complex are probed using ligand K-edge X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. Distinct spectral signatures of metal–ligand bond formation e.g. frontier orbital distortions, occupation changes, and energy shifts are detected at the coordinating sites. The absence of strong spin orbit coupling effects allows for direct interpretation based on TD-DFT based spectrum simulations.

Hole Dynamics in Photoexcited Hematite Studied with Femtosecond Oxygen K-edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) is a photoelectrode for the water splitting process because of its relatively narrow bandgap and abundance in the earth's crust. In this study, the photoexcited state of a hematite thin film was investigated with femtosecond oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the PAL-XFEL in order to follow the dynamics of its photoexcited states. The 200 fs decay time of the hole state in the valence band was observed via its corresponding XAS feature.

Quantifying the Steric Effect on Metal-Ligand Bonding in Fe Carbene Photosensitizers with Fe 2p3d Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Understanding the electronic structure and chemical bonding of transition metal complexes is important for improving the function of molecular photosensitizers and catalysts. We have utilized X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe L₃ edge to investigate the electronic structure of two Fe N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with similar chemical structures but different steric effects and contrasting excited-state dynamics: [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺ and [Fe(btbip)₂]²⁺, bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)pyridine and btbip = 2,6-bis(3-tert-butyl-imidazole-1-ylidene)pyridine. In combination with charge transfer multiplet and ab initio calculations, we quantified how changes in Fe-carbene bond length due to steric effects modify the metal-ligand bonding, including σ/π donation and π back-donation. We find that σ donation is significantly stronger in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺, whereas the π back-donation is similar in both complexes. The resulting stronger ligand field and nephelauxetic effect in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺ lead to approximately 1 eV destabilization of the quintet metal-centered ⁵T_2g excited state compared to [Fe(btbip)₂]²⁺, providing an explanation for the absence of a photoinduced ⁵T_2g population and a longer metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited-state lifetime in [Fe(bmip)₂]²⁺. This work demonstrates how combined modeling of XAS and RIXS spectra can be utilized to understand the electronic structure of transition metal complexes governed by correlated electrons and donation/back-donation interactions.

Capturing Atom-Specific Electronic Structural Dynamics of Transition-Metal Complexes with Ultrafast Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy

The atomic specificity of X-ray spectroscopies provides a distinct perspective on molecular electronic structure. For 3 d metal coordination and organometallic complexes, the combination of metal- and ligand-specific X-ray spectroscopies directly interrogates metal–ligand covalency—the hybridization of metal and ligand electronic states. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), the X-ray analog of resonance Raman scattering, provides access to all classes of valence excited states in transition-metal complexes, making it a particularly powerful means of characterizing the valence electronic structure of 3 d metal complexes. Recent advances in X-ray free-electron laser sources have enabled RIXS to be extended to the ultrafast time domain. We review RIXS studies of two archetypical photochemical processes: charge-transfer excitation in ferricyanide and ligand photodissociation in iron pentacarbonyl. These studies demonstrate femtosecond-resolution RIXS can directly characterize the time-evolving electronic structure, including the evolution of the metal–ligand covalency.

Reduction of Electron Repulsion in Highly Covalent Fe-Amido Complexes Counteracts the Impact of a Weak Ligand Field on Excited-State Ordering

The ability to access panchromatic absorption and long-lived charge-transfer (CT) excited states is critical to the pursuit of abundant-metal molecular photosensitizers. Fe(II) complexes supported by benzannulated diarylamido ligands have been reported to broadly absorb visible light with nanosecond CT excited state lifetimes, but as amido donors exert a weak ligand field, this defies conventional photosensitizer design principles. Here, we report an aerobically stable Fe(II) complex of a phenanthridine/quinoline diarylamido ligand, Fe(^ClL)₂, with panchromatic absorption and a 3 ns excited-state lifetime. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe L-edge and N K-edge, we experimentally validate the strong Fe-N_amido orbital mixing in Fe(^ClL)₂ responsible for the panchromatic absorption and demonstrate a previously unreported competition between ligand-field strength and metal-ligand (Fe-N_amido) covalency that stabilizes the ³CT state over the lowest energy triplet metal-centered (³MC) state in the ground-state geometry. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and density functional theory (DFT) suggest that formation of this CT state depopulates an orbital with Fe-N_amido antibonding character, causing metal-ligand bonds to contract and accentuating the geometric differences between CT and MC excited states. These effects diminish the driving force for electron transfer to metal-centered excited states and increase the intramolecular reorganization energy, critical properties for extending the lifetime of CT excited states. These findings highlight metal-ligand covalency as a novel design principle for elongating excited state lifetimes in abundant metal photosensitizers.

Following Metal-to-Ligand Charge-Transfer Dynamics with Ligand and Spin Specificity Using Femtosecond Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering at the Nitrogen K-Edge

We demonstrate for the case of photoexcited [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)₃]²⁺ how femtosecond resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the ligand K-edge allows one to uniquely probe changes in the valence electronic structure following a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation. Metal-ligand hybridization is probed by nitrogen-1s resonances providing information on both the electron-accepting ligand in the MLCT state and the hole density of the metal center. By comparing to spectrum calculations based on density functional theory, we are able to distinguish the electronic structure of the electron-accepting ligand and the other ligands and determine a temporal upper limit of (250 ± 40) fs for electron localization following the charge-transfer excitation. The spin of the localized electron is deduced from the selection rules of the RIXS process establishing new experimental capabilities for probing transient charge and spin densities.

Transient absorption data of [FeII(tpy)(CN)3]- reveals spectroscopic signatures indicative of 3MLCT with a ∼10 ps kinetic component. These data are supported by DFT and TD-DFT calculations, which show that excited state ordering is responsive to the number of cyanide ligands on the complex.

Excited-State Charge Distribution of a Donor-π-Acceptor Zn Porphyrin Probed by N K-Edge Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Zinc porphyrin solar cell dyes with donor-π-acceptor architectures combine light absorber (π), electron-donor, and electron-acceptor moieties inside a single molecule with atomic precision. The donor-π-acceptor design promotes the separation of charge carriers following optical excitation. Here, we probe the excited-state electronic structure within such molecules by combining time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the N K-edge with first-principles time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Customized Zn porphyrins with strong-donor triphenylamine groups or weak-donor tri-tert-butylbenzene groups were synthesized. Energetically well-separated N K-edge absorption features simultaneously probe the excited-state electronic structure from the perspectives of the macrocycle and triphenylamine N atoms. New absorption transitions between the macrocycle N atoms and the excited-state HOMO vacancy are observed, and the triphenylamine associated absorption feature blue-shifts, consistent with partial oxidation of the donor groups in the excited state.

Revealing the bonding of solvated Ru complexes with valence-to-core resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Ru-complexes are widely studied because of their use in biological applications and photoconversion technologies. We reveal novel insights into the chemical bonding of a series of Ru(ii)- and Ru(iii)-complexes by leveraging recent advances in high-energy-resolution tender X-ray spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. We perform Ru 2p4d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the valence excitations in dilute solvated Ru-complexes. Combining these experiments with a newly developed theoretical approach based on time-dependent density functional theory, we assign the spectral features and quantify the metal-ligand bonding interactions. The valence-to-core RIXS features uniquely identify the metal-centered and charge transfer states and allow extracting the ligand-field splitting for all the complexes. The combined experimental and theoretical approach described here is shown to reliably characterize the ground and excited valence states of Ru complexes, and serve as a basis for future investigations of ruthenium, or other 4d metals active sites, in biological and chemical applications.

Probing Solute-Solvent Interactions of Transition Metal Complexes Using L-Edge Absorption Spectroscopy

In order to tailor solution-phase chemical reactions involving transition metal complexes, it is critical to understand how their valence electronic charge distributions are affected by the solution environment. Here, solute-solvent interactions of a solvatochromic mixed-ligand iron complex were investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the transition metal L_2,3-edge. Due to the selectivity of the corresponding core excitations to the iron 3d orbitals, the method grants direct access to the valence electronic structure around the iron center and its response to interactions with the solvent environment. A linear increase of the total L_2,3-edge absorption cross section as a function of the solvent Lewis acidity is revealed. The effect is caused by relative changes in different metal-ligand-bonding channels, which preserve local charge densities while increasing the density of unoccupied states around the iron center. These conclusions are corroborated by a combination of molecular dynamics and spectrum simulations based on time-dependent density functional theory. The simulations reproduce the spectral trends observed in the X-ray but also optical absorption experiments. Our results underscore the importance of solute-solvent interactions when aiming for an accurate description of the valence electronic structure of solvated transition metal complexes and demonstrate how L_2,3-edge absorption spectroscopy can aid in understanding the impact of the solution environment on intramolecular covalency and the electronic charge distribution.

Chemical control of competing electron transfer pathways in iron tetracyano-polypyridyl photosensitizers

Photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer dynamics following metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation of [Fe(CN)4(2,2'-bipyridine)]2- (1), [Fe(CN)4(2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine)]2- (2) and [Fe(CN)4(2,2'-bipyrimidine)]2- (3) were investigated in various solvents with static and time-resolved UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy and Fe 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). This series of polypyridyl ligands, combined with the strong solvatochromism of the complexes, enables the 1MLCT vertical energy to be varied from 1.64 eV to 2.64 eV and the 3MLCT lifetime to range from 180 fs to 67 ps. The 3MLCT lifetimes in 1 and 2 decrease exponentially as the MLCT energy increases, consistent with electron transfer to the lowest energy triplet metal-centred (3MC) excited state, as established by the Tanabe-Sugano analysis of the Fe 2p3d RIXS data. In contrast, the 3MLCT lifetime in 3 changes non-monotonically with MLCT energy, exhibiting a maximum. This qualitatively distinct behaviour results from a competing 3MLCT → ground state (GS) electron transfer pathway that exhibits energy gap law behaviour. The 3MLCT → GS pathway involves nuclear tunnelling for the high-frequency polypyridyl breathing mode (hν = 1530 cm-1), which is most displaced for complex 3, making this pathway significantly more efficient. Our study demonstrates that the excited state relaxation mechanism of Fe polypyridyl photosensitizers can be readily tuned by ligand and solvent environment. Furthermore, our study reveals that extending charge transfer lifetimes requires control of the relative energies of the 3MLCT and the 3MC states and suppression of the intramolecular distortion of the acceptor ligand in the 3MLCT excited state.

Vibrational wavepacket dynamics in Fe carbene photosensitizer determined with femtosecond X-ray emission and scattering

The non-equilibrium dynamics of electrons and nuclei govern the function of photoactive materials. Disentangling these dynamics remains a critical goal for understanding photoactive materials. Here we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of the [Fe(bmip)2]2+ photosensitizer, where bmip = 2,6-bis(3-methyl-imidazole-1-ylidine)-pyridine, with simultaneous femtosecond-resolution Fe Kα and Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and X-ray solution scattering (XSS). This measurement shows temporal oscillations in the XES and XSS difference signals with the same 278 fs period oscillation. These oscillations originate from an Fe-ligand stretching vibrational wavepacket on a triplet metal-centered (3MC) excited state surface. This 3MC state is populated with a 110 fs time constant by 40% of the excited molecules while the rest relax to a 3MLCT excited state. The sensitivity of the Kα XES to molecular structure results from a 0.7% average Fe-ligand bond length shift between the 1 s and 2p core-ionized states surfaces.

Direct observation of the electronic states of photoexcited hematite with ultrafast 2p3d X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Ultrafast Fe L₃ XAS and 2p3d RIXS elucidate the photoexcitation process of hematite.

Solvent-assisted structural conversion involving bimetallic complexes based on the tris(oxalato)ferrate(iii) unit with the green → blue → red crystal color sequence

Three new complexes forming a dynamic system and given by the following formulae: [Cu₂(bpy)₄Fe(ox)₃]NO₃·H₂O 1, [Fe(bpy)₃]₂[Fe(ox)₃]NO₃·10H₂O 2 and [Cu(bpy)₃]₂[Fe(ox)₃]NO₃·10H₂O 3 (bpy - 2,2'-bipyridine, ox - oxalate), were synthesized from a methanol-water mixture or water, and characterized structurally, spectroscopically and magnetically. Compound 1 contains trinuclear [(bpy)₂Cu(μ-ox)Fe(ox)(μ-ox)Cu(bpy)₂]⁺ cations, while 2 and 3 can be classified as isomorphous ionic compounds, with alternately arranged hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers of mononuclear complex ions. The green crystals of 1 are perfectly stable in air, whereas in selected solvents they undergo irreversible solvent-assisted recrystallization towards red crystals of 2, which is also accompanied by the appearance of mononuclear blue copper complexes with oxalate, 2,2'-bipyridine and aqua ligands, already described in the literature. The above crystallization/recrystallization processes indicate variable solution contents. The whole effect is accelerated by both the increased temperature and day light irradiation, however, different products from the pool prevail under various conditions. The observed transformation can be understood in terms of thermodynamic and kinetic control, involving the known photo-activity of [Fe(ox)₃]^3- moieties and the effect of quadruple aryl embrace (QAE) on the stability of the crystal network. Considering the presence of Fe^III-ox-Cu^II connectivity in 1 we performed detailed magnetic studies and theoretical calculations for this compound. Due to the strong asymmetry of Cu-O bonds the antiferromagnetic coupling is rather weak, with J_Cu-Fe being ca. -3.4 cm^-1 (using Hamiltonian of the type H = -J_Cu-Fe(S_Cu1S_Fe + S_FeS_Cu2) -J_Cu-Cu(S_Cu1S_Cu2)). We found that these values are very close to those predicted by B3LYP/6-311G* calculations.

Covalency-Driven Preservation of Local Charge Densities in a Metal-to-Ligand Charge-Transfer Excited Iron Photosensitizer

Covalency is found to even out charge separation after photo‐oxidation of the metal center in the metal‐to‐ligand charge‐transfer state of an iron photosensitizer. The σ‐donation ability of the ligands compensates for the loss of iron 3d electronic charge, thereby upholding the initial metal charge density and preserving the local noble‐gas configuration. These findings are enabled through element‐specific and orbital‐selective time‐resolved X‐ray absorption spectroscopy at the iron L‐edge. Thus, valence orbital populations around the central metal are directly accessible. In conjunction with density functional theory we conclude that the picture of a localized charge‐separation is inadequate. However, the unpaired spin density provides a suitable representation of the electron–hole pair associated with the electron‐transfer process.
