Abstract
Zirconium/hafnium fluorides have recently been recognized as potential nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edges, which is significant in laser science and industry. The synthesis of noncentrosymmetric (NCS) materials based on centrosymmetric (CS) compounds by an isovalent cation substitution-oriented design is an emerging strategy in the NLO territory. Here, two isostructural and novel fluorides, CaBaMF8 (M = Zr (1), Hf (2)), have been synthesized through the combination of alkaline earth metals, zirconium/hafnium, and fluorine elements. They feature zero-dimensional and CS structures composed by an isolated MF8 (M = Zr, Hf) dodecahedron and dissociative Ca2+ and Ba2+ cations, and they display short UV cutoff edges (<200 nm) as well. Two three-dimensional fluorides Li2CaMF8 (M = Zr (3), Hf (4)) are obtained by replacing Ba with alkali metal Li atom, which not only represent phase-matchable second-harmonic-generation activities (0.36, 0.30× KH2PO4 (KDP)) at 1064 nm but also maintain short UV cutoff edges with high reflectance. This work has largely enriched the family of NCS zirconium/hafnium fluorides reaching the short UV region.

Abstract
Traditional fluorides are rarely reported as candidates for nonlinear optical (NLO) materials featuring a deep-ultraviolet cutoff edge. Theoretical investigations suggest that the ZrF8 dodecahedron shows large polarizability anisotropy and benefits for large birefringence. Herein, a new fluorine-rich fluoride, K3Ba2Zr6F31, was synthesized by coupling the ZrF8 group, featuring acentric cis-[Zr6F34]10- clusters with a 63-screw axis. Significantly, K3Ba2Zr6F31 exhibits a short UV cutoff edge (below 200 nm) and moderate second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (0.5 × KH2PO4). It also possesses a relatively large birefringence (0.08@1064 nm), together with a broad transparency window (2.5-21.1 μm). First-principles calculations suggest that the cis-[Zr6F34]10- cluster built by ZrF8 dodecahedra are the dominant contributors to the large band gap (7.89 eV, cal.) and SHG response simultaneously. Such systematic work highlights that Zr-based fluorides afford a new paradigm for the development of efficient NLO materials with a short UV cutoff edge.

Abstract
Direct air capture (DAC) removal of anthropogenic CO2 from the atmosphere is imperative to slow the catastrophic effects of global climate change. Numerous materials are being investigated, including various alkaline inorganic metal oxides that form carbonates via DAC. Here we explore metastable early d0 transition metal peroxide molecules that undergo stabilization via multiple routes, including DAC. Specifically here, we describe via experiment and computation the mechanistic conversion of A3V(O2)4 (tetraperoxovanadate, A = K, Rb, Cs) to first a monocarbonate VO(O2)2(CO3)3-, and ultimately HKCO3 plus KVO4. Single crystal X-ray structures of rubidium and cesium tetraperoxovanadate are reported here for the first time, likely prior-challenged by instability. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), 51V solid state NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), tandem thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TGA-MS) along with calculations (DFT, density functional theory) all converge on mechanisms of CO2 capture and release that involve the vanadium centre, despite the end product of a 300 days study being bicarbonate and metavanadate. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy along with a wet chemical assay and computational studies evidence the presense of ∼5% adventitous superoxide, likely formed by peroxide reduction of vanadium, which also stabilizes via the reaction with CO2. The alkalis have a profound effect on the stability of the peroxovanadate compounds, stability trending K > Rb > Cs. While this translates to more rapid CO2 capture with heavier alkalis, it does not necessarily lead to capture of more CO2. All compounds capture approximately two equivalents CO2 per vanadium centre. We cannot yet explain the reactivity trend of the alkali peroxovanadates, because any change in speciation of the alkalis from reactions to product is not quantifiable. This study sets the stage for understanding and implementing transition metal peroxide species, including peroxide-functionalized metal oxides, for DAC.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are indispensable for the solid-state lasers for their ability to expand wavelength spectral to the regions where the directing lasing is difficult or even impossible, yet the rational design of a high-performance NLO crystal remains a great challenge owing to the severe structural and properties' requirements. Herein, a new noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar gallium iodate, LiGa(IO3 )4 , with a novel 2D anionic layer, is successfully designed and synthesized by the aliovalent substitution strategy based on classic α-LiIO3 . The 2D [Ga(IO3 )4 ]∞ - layer in LiGa(IO3 )4 is built from the GaO6 octahedra and highly polarizable units IO3 . Compared with its parent compound, the partial replacement of A-site Li+ cation with main group Ga3+ cation facilitates LiGa(IO3 )4 to possess excellent NLO properties, including the large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (14 × KH2 PO4 (KDP) @ 1064 nm), wide bandgap (4.25 eV), large birefringence (0.23 @ 1064 nm), and wide optical transparency from UV to mid-IR. These reveal that LiGa(IO3 )4 will be a promising NLO crystal.

Abstract
Oxides are emerging candidates for mid-infrared (mid-IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. However, their intrinsically weak second harmonic generation (SHG) effects hinder their further development. A major design challenge is to increase the nonlinear coefficient while maintaining the broad mid-IR transmission and high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the oxides. In this study, it is reported on a polar NLO tellurite, Cd2 Nb2 Te4 O15 (CNTO), featuring a pseudo-Aurivillius-type perovskite layered structure composed of three types of NLO active groups, including CdO6 octahedra, NbO6 octahedra, and TeO4 seesaws. The uniform orientation of the distorted units induces a giant SHG response that is ≈31 times larger than that of KH2 PO4 , the largest value among all reported metal tellurites. Additionally, CNTO exhibits a large band gap (3.75 eV), a wide optical transparency window (0.33-14.5 µm), superior birefringence (0.12@ 546 nm), high LIDT (23 × AgGaS2 ), and strong acid and alkali resistance, indicating its potential as a promising mid-IR NLO material.

Abstract
Establishing high performance ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) selenite crystals with well-balanced properties is very challenging attributable to their strong absorption for UV light. Here a rare-earth selenite, Sc(HSeO3 )3 , with excellent UV NLO properties is introduced. Sc(HSeO3 )3 crystallizing in the polar NCS space group, Cc, features a 3D archetiture built up by interconnected ScO6 octahedra and HSeO3 groups. The crystal exhibits remarkably well-balanced UV-NLO functionality, namely, the shortest absorption edge (214 nm) among NLO-active selenites, wide bandgap (5.28 eV), large phase-matchable SHG response (5 × KDP), and sufficiently large birefringence (cal. 0.105 @1064 nm). Detailed DFT calculations have been performed to elucidate the structure-property relationships. This work provides a new example of discovering novel UV NLO selenite materials.

Abstract
Chirality is an important concept in chemistry revealing intriguing optical properties such as circular dichroism (CD), circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), etc. As one of the non-centrosymmetric (NCS) classes, chiral materials with extended structures may exhibit unique nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, such as second-harmonic generation (SHG). In this Concept article, a series of recently discovered NCS coordination polymers (CPs) from use of carefully designed chiral organic ligands are reviewed. Combining several metal cations such as lanthanides, lead, zinc, and cadmium with rigid chiral ligands has resulted in interesting CPs with both polar and nonpolar structures. Detailed structures, SHG properties, and structure-property relationships are provided. The importance of hyperpolarizability formed by intermolecular hydrogen boding interactions to SHG is emphasized.

Abstract
Understanding and exploring the functional modules (FMs) consisting of local atomic groups can promote the development of the materials with functional performances. Oxygen-containing tetrahedral modules are popular in deep-ultraviolet (DUV) optical materials, but their weak optical anisotropy is adverse to birefringence. Here, the fluorooxosulfate group is proved as a new birefringence-enhanced FM for the first time. The birefringence of fluorooxosulfates can be 4.8-15.5 times that of sulfates with the same metal cations while maintaining a DUV band gap. The polarizing microscope measurement confirms the birefringence enhancement by using the millimeter crystals experimentally. The theoretical studies from micro and macro levels further reveal a novel universal strategy that the fluorine induced anisotropic electronic distribution in fluorooxo-tetrahedral group is responsible for the enhancement of birefringence. This study will guide the future discovery of DUV optical materials with enlarged birefringence.

Abstract
The discovery of new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with excellent properties is in urgently demand because of their ability to generate coherent light. Herein, we report an unique NLO lead bromide formate, KCs2 [Pb2 Br5 (HCOO)2 ], which has been synthesized by a mix-solvothermal method. KCs2 [Pb2 Br5 (HCOO)2 ] exhibits strong phase-matching second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (6.5×KDP), large birefringence (0.16@ 1064 nm), and a wide transparent window in most visible light and mid-IR region. Interestingly, KCs2 [Pb2 Br5 (HCOO)2 ] features a polar 3D lead-bromide framework in which adjacent Pb-Br layers containing coplanar Pb6 Br6 rings are not only parallel to each other, but also orient in the same direction. These oriented arrangements are responsible for the strong SHG response and large birefringence that are elucidated by both local dipole moment and theoretical calculations. This research provides a new strategy to explore subsequent NLO crystals.

Abstract
The series of alkali-metal tin chloride sulfates A3Sn2(SO4)3-xCl1+2x (A = K, Rb, Cs; x = 0, 1), K3Sn2(SO4)3Cl, Rb3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3, and Cs3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3, were successfully synthesized through an improved mild hydrothermal method. Interestingly, in addition to the cation size effect, the structure-directing effect of anions induces different symmetries in the three title compounds, with K3Sn2(SO4)3Cl being noncentrosymmetric, while Rb3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3 and Cs3Sn2(SO4)2Cl3 are centrosymmetric. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements indicate that K3Sn2(SO4)3Cl is a nonlinear optical material that is type I phase matchable with a weak SHG response (0.1× KDP). Photoluminescence tests reveal that the three title compounds emit strong greenish yellow, orange, and salmon light, respectively, under UV excitation, indicating that they are promising inorganic solid fluorescent materials. Simultaneously, a detailed structural analysis of all the known tin(II) halide sulfates has been performed, which will guide the systematic exploration of high-performance tin(II)-based functional materials in the future.

Abstract
Employing π-conjugated anionic groups in molecular construction has been proven to be an effective strategy to find superior ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals over the decades. Herein, unlike the traditional π-conjugated anionic groups, we identify that a π-conjugated cationic group, viz., [C(NH2)3]+, is also an excellent UV NLO-active functional group in theory. Furthermore, we identify a [C(NH2)3]+-containing compound, C(NH2)3ClO4, as a promising UV NLO candidate due to its short UV cutoff edge (200 nm), remarkable second-harmonic generation effect (∼3 × KDP), and moderate birefringence of 0.076@1064 nm. Additionally, C(NH2)3ClO4 has excellent ferroelectric properties and reversal of domains, which also enables it to produce ultraviolet coherent light as short as 200 nm by a quasi-phase matching technique with a periodically poling method. Our study may provide not only a promising UV NLO crystal but also a new π-conjugated functional unit, [C(NH2)3]+, which will open a path to finding new classes of high-performance UV NLO crystals.

Abstract
The first fluorinated lead vanadate selenite Pb2(V2O4F)(VO2)(SeO3)3 (PVOFS) was successfully synthesized via a mild hydrothermal method. This compound crystallizes in the chiral space group P212121 of the orthorhombic system and it is the first noncentrosymmetric structure in the PbII-VV-SeIV-O-F system. PVOFS is composed of five kinds of second-order Jahn-Teller susceptible asymmetric motifs, including three distinct types of vanadium-centered polyhedral units ([VO5F], [VO6] and [VO5]), [SeO3] pyramids and Pb2+ cations. It features a unique three-dimensional open framework structure displaying three types of tunnels (10-, 8- and 7-membered rings), which enriches the structural diversity for fluorinated vanadate selenite systems. Optical property studies revealed that PVOFS shows a second-harmonic generation response of 0.3 times that of the commercial KH2PO4 with phase matching behavior, a wide transparent region covering IR windows, an optical band gap of 2.35 eV, a high laser damage threshold of 61 times that of AgGaS2, and a large birefringence of 0.105 at 1064 nm. Theoretical calculations have been performed to clarify the correlation between the molecular structure and the optical properties of PVOFS.

Abstract
In contrast to the well-investigated halogen-containing borates and carbonates, very few halogen-containing borate carbonate compounds have been reported. Specifically, no example of borate carbonate fluoride has been synthesized successfully until now. Herein, the planar π-conjugated units [BO3 ]3- and [CO3 ]2- and the F- ions are introduced simultaneously into one crystal structure resulting in the first borate carbonate fluoride, Ba3 (BO3 )(CO3 )F, by the high-temperature solution method in the atmosphere. Its structure features a hexagonal channel formed by the [BO3 ]3- and [CO3 ]2- units with the [F3 Ba8 ]13+ trimers filled in the channel. Various characterizations including single crystal- and powder-XRD, EDX, IR, UV-vis-NIR, and TG-DSC, together with the first principles calculation have been carried out to verify the structure and fully understand the structure-property relationships.

Abstract
Two new alkaline earth barbiturates, Ca(H3C4N2O3)2·H2O and Sr(H5C8N4O5)2·4H2O, were synthesized via the mild hydrothermal technique. For Ca(H3C4N2O3)2·H2O, the stacking (H3C4N2O3)- anions along the c axis are interconnected by CaO7 polydedra forming a three-dimensional structure. Also, for Sr(H5C8N4O5)2·4H2O, it has two-dimensional layers composed by SrO7 polyhedra and (H5C8N4O5)- anions. The (H5C8N4O5)- anions can be seen as two (H3C4N2O3)- anions connected each other via the N-C bond. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements revealed that Ca(H3C4N2O3)2·H2O is a phase-matchable material with a moderate SHG response (ca. 1.15× that of KDP). Furthermore, the birefringence values of the two crystals were measured as 0.49 and 0.475 at 546.1 nm, respectively. The theoretical calculations showed that the SHG response and large birefringence were primarily caused by the (H3C4N2O3)- and (H5C8N4O5)- groups.

Abstract
We report a new strongly birefringent material, [Al(H2O)6](IO3)2(NO3) (AINO). Based on a detailed analysis, we concluded that its enhanced birefringence (0.253 at 546 nm) predominantly resulted from a synergy of the effects of its (NO3)- and (IO3)- functional motifs, combined with an equally important and indispensable optimal arrangement of these two groups in the structure. This work has provided insight for discovering new birefringent materials.

Abstract
Developing effective strategies to design novel, excellent birefringent materials has become an emerging challenge. Herein, we report a new UV nitrate birefringent material, CsHgNO3Cl2, which is an analogue of the known UV carbonate nonlinear optical crystal KCaCO3F. In CsHgNO3Cl2, a perfect layered structure was produced owing to the alliance of a planar π-conjugated anion NO3- and highly electropolarized Hg2+ cation. The optimized layered structure that is beneficial in enlarging the optical anisotropy induced a large birefringence (Δn = 0.145@546 nm) for CsHgNO3Cl2, even superior to that of the well-known commercial birefringent material α-BBO in the UV region. The strategy that the optimization of planar functional group arrangement is able to boost birefringence is expected to guide the development of high-performance birefringent materials in the future, especially in the field of UV.

Abstract
A novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) metal-free formic-borate, (NH4)3[B(OH)3]2(COOH)3, has been discovered, which exhibits an infrequent graphite-like structure. The alliance of two types of π-conjugated planar anions BO33- and COOH- produced an optimized layered structure to maximize the anisotropic polarizability, resulting in an extremely large birefringence (0.156@546 nm), larger than that of the classical commercial UV birefringent material α-BBO (0.122@546 nm). This strategy that structural optimization could enhance birefringence will guide the discovery of large birefringence materials, especially in the UV region.

Abstract
The second harmonic generation (SHG) responses of the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases of KH2PO4 (KDP) were calculated by first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the individual atom contributions to the SHG responses were analyzed by the atom response theory (ART). We show that the occurrence of static polarization does not enhance the SHG responses of the ferroelectric KDP, and that the Kleinman symmetry is reasonably well obeyed for the paraelectric phase, but not for the ferroelectric phase despite that the latter has a larger bandgap. This is caused most likely by the fact that the ferroelectric phase has lower-symmetry local structures than does the paraelectric phase. The contribution to the SHG response of an individual K+ ion is comparable to that of an individual O2- ion. The contributions of the O2- and K+ ions arise overwhelmingly from the polarizable parts of the electronic structure, namely, from the valence bands of the O-2p nonbonding states and from the conduction bands of the K-3d states.

Abstract
Two new antimony fluoride sulfates named A6Sb4F12(SO4)3 (A = Rb, Cs) with unique crown-like clusters have been successfully synthesized by introducing Sb3+ with a stereochemically active lone pair in the sulfate system through a facile hydrothermal method. The structure regulation induced by the cation sizes results in the symmetry difference in these two title compounds, i.e., Rb6Sb4F12(SO4)3 crystallizing in the polar noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space group of P3 and Cs6Sb4F12(SO4)3 in the centrosymmetric (CS) space group of P1̅. Detailed characterizations, including XRD, thermal behaviors, optical properties, and the theoretical calculations, for these two compounds have been performed. The discovery of the unique crown-like clusters observed in A6Sb4F12(SO4)3 (A = Rb, Cs) enriches the diversity of structures for antimony sulfates systems. Simultaneously, a summary and comparison for all reported antimony halide sulfates has been made to illustrate the synergistic effect of the stoichiometric ratio and cation sizes on the macroscopic centricity and the framework structure, which will guide the systematical discovery of antimony(III)-based functional materials in future.

Abstract
Exploring novel functional materials via chemical substitution-oriented design is an emerging strategy. The method can be expanded to the discovery of high performance ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) solid state materials by a careful tuning of the substituted atoms. This minireview presents a brief introduction to chemical substitution-oriented design including single-site substitution, dual-site substitution, and multisite substitution. Several state-of-the-art UV NLO materials such as K3VO(O2)2CO3-type, KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF)-type, Ca5(PO4)3(OH)-type, and KTiOPO4 (KTP)-type phases successfully discovered by the chemical substitution method are discussed. A brief introduction to chemical substitution-oriented design to discover high performance ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) solid state materials is presented.![]()

Abstract
Birefringent materials, which can modulate the polarization of light, are almost exclusively limited to oxides. Peroxides have long been overlooked as birefringent materials, because they are usually not stable in air. Now, the first peroxide birefringent material Rb2 VO(O2 )2 F is reported, the single crystals of which keep transparency after being exposed in the air for two weeks. Interestingly, Rb2 VO(O2 )2 F does not feature an optimal anisotropic structure, but its birefringence (Δn=0.189 at 546 nm) exceeds those of the majority of oxides. According to the first-principles calculations, this exceptional birefringence should be attributed to the strong electronic interactions between localized π orbital of O2 2- anions and V5+ 3d orbitals, which may be also favorable to the stability in the air for Rb2 VO(O2 )2 F. These findings distinguish peroxides as a brand-new class of birefringent materials that may possess birefringence superior to the traditional oxides.

Abstract
The second harmonic generation (SHG) responses of nonisostructural nonlinear optical (NLO) compounds, β-BaB2O4, LiB3O5, CsB3O5, CsLiB6O10, KBe2BO3F2, and LiCs2PO4, were examined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the contributions of their individual cations and anions were determined by performing atomic response theory analyses. In all of these compounds, the contribution of all metal cations lies in the range of ∼9.3 to ∼29.7% of the total SHG responses, and that of all anions lies between ∼57.4 and ∼72.3%. However, in terms of individual atom contribution, a large metal cation can contribute more than does an anion to the total SHG response. Our work shows that the SHG contribution of an individual anion (e.g., O2-) is weakened when it forms covalent bonds with its surrounding cations (e.g., O-B). The contribution of an individual cation is further affected by the homogeneity of its surrounding anion distribution and also by how strongly the polarizabilities of its surrounding anions are weakened by covalent bonding with other cations. The SHG response increases with αsum/(NEg), an important parameter useful in searching for new NLO materials, where αsum is the sum of the polarizabilities of all of the ions in the primitive unit cell, N is the total number of atoms per primitive cell, and Eg is the band gap.

Abstract
KTiOPO4 (KTP) is a classic commercial nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, but its narrow bandgap (3.52 eV) prevents its practical application in the ultraviolet (UV) region. Many trials to widen the narrow bandgap of KTP have failed in the past few decades. A chemical cosubstitution strategy was implemented to design new members of the KTP-type family as potential UV NLO materials. First, a novel centrosymmetric KTP-type compound NH4SbFPO4·H2O with a sharply enlarged bandgap (5.01 eV) was obtained through three-site aliovalent substitution. Second, the noncentrosymmetric NH4SbF2SO4 was synthesized by the introduction of more F- anions to destroy the crystal symmetry and SO42- to replace PO43- for balancing the charge in NH4SbFPO4·H2O, which realized the transformation from a visible phosphate system to solar blind UV sulfate system for KTP-type family NLO materials. The preliminary experimental results indicated that NH4SbF2SO4 is a promising solar blind UV NLO material. The first-principles calculations revealed that the sharply enlarged bandgap resulted from the substitution of the transition metal cations with the main group metal cations and the introduction of F- anions with high electronegativity.

Abstract
Mixed-anion compounds are among the most promising systems to design functional materials with enhanced properties. Among the phosphate-sulfate species, the [SO4]2- and [PO2F2]- tetrahedra are known and give rise to structural versatility. However, to date, the crystal structures of phosphate-sulfates with the coexistence of two distinct anion groups ([S2O7]2- and [PO2F2]-) in one compound are unknown. Here, a novel type of fluorooxophosphorsulfate, K4(PO2F2)2(S2O7) (KSPOF), is designed and synthesized via a high-temperature method in a closed system. The crystal structure is derived from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (C2/c, a = 13.000(10) Å, b = 7.5430(10) Å, c = 19.010(10) Å, β = 130.070(10)°, and Z = 4). It is the first fluorooxophosphorsulfate with mixed-anion building units ([S2O7]2- and [PO2F2]-) and a unique drum-like cluster was found, which enriches the diversity of structures for fluorooxophosphorsulfate systems. Furthermore, the theoretical calculations indicate that KSPOF possesses moderate birefringence, which mainly originates from the distorted [PO2F2]- tetrahedron.

Abstract
The design of new beryllium-free deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical materials is important but challenging. Here, we describe a new strategy to search for such materials based on rational selection of fundamental structural units. By combining asymmetric AlO3F tetrahedra and π-conjugated B3O6 rings, a new aluminum borate fluoride, CsAlB3O6F was obtained. It exhibits excellent linear and nonlinear optical properties including a high optical transmittance with a cut-off edge shorter than 190 nm, large second harmonic generation intensities (2.0× KH2PO4, KDP), and suitable birefringence for phase-matching under 200 nm. It also has good thermal stability and can be synthesized easily in an open system. A new potential deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical material CsAlB3O6F was designed by a rational selection of fundamental structural units. This material does not require toxic raw materials and can be grown in an open system.![]()
