Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived porous carbon materials for supercapacitors: an overview

Surfactant-Free, Size-Controllable, and Scalable Green Synthesis of ZIF-8 Particles with Narrow Size Distribution by Tuning Key Reaction Parameters in Water Solvent

The chemical/physical properties and reliable performance of nanoporous materials are strongly influenced by the particle size and corresponding distribution. Among many types of MOFs, ZIF-8, is still widely used and many studies have been conducted to control the particle size and uniformity of ZIF-8 using surfactants and organic solvents. However, the use of surfactants and organic solvents process is expensive and may cause environmental pollution. For the first time, in this paper, a surfactant-free, size-controllable, and scalable green synthesis method of ZIF-8 particles is reported using four reaction parameters (temperature, concentration, pouring time, and reactant ratio) that affect the formation of nuclei and growth of ZIF-8 crystals. The as-synthesized ZIF-8 nanoparticles show great uniformity and controllable particle sizes in the wide range of 147-915 nm. In addition, a 2 L large-scale synthesis of ZIF-8 with narrow size distribution is developed by finely tuned particle size in water without any additives. To demonstrate the efficient utilization of nanopores according to the particle size and size distribution, an adsorption test is conducted on the ZIF-8 nanoparticles. This study will support the synthesis of size-controlled ZIF-8 with narrow size distribution and their composites for achieving high performance in the emerging applications.

Unveiling high-power and high-safety lithium-ion battery separator based on interlayer of ZIF-67/cellulose nanofiber with electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)/melamine nonwoven membranes

Due to the poor thermal stability of conventional separators, lithium-ion batteries require a suitable separator to maintain system safety for long-term cycling performance. It must have high porosity, superior electrolyte uptake ability, and good ion-conducting properties even at high temperatures. In this work, we demonstrate a novel composite membrane based on sandwiching of zeolitic imidazole frameworks-67 decorated cellulose acetate nanofibers (ZIF-67@CA) with electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)/melamine (denoted as PVAM) nonwoven membranes. The as-prepared sandwich-type membranes are called PVAM/x%ZIF-67@CA/PVAM. The middle layer of composite membranes is primarily filled with different weight percentages of ZIF-67 nanoparticles (x = 5, 15, and 25 wt%), which both reduces the non-uniform porous structure of CA and increases its thermal stability. Therefore, our sandwich-type PVAM/x%ZIF-67@CA/PVAM membrane exhibits a higher thermal shrinkage effect at 200 °C than the commercial polyethylene (PE) separator. Due to its high electrolyte uptake (646.8%) and porosity (85.2%), PVAM/15%ZIF-67@CA/PVAM membrane achieved high ionic conductivity of 1.46 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 70 °C, as compared to the commercial PE separator (ca. 6.01 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 70 °C). Besides, the cell with PVAM/15%ZIF-67@CA/PVAM membrane shows an excellent discharge capacity of about 167.5 mAh g-1after 100 cycles at a 1C rate with a capacity retention of 90.3%. The ZIF-67 fillers in our sandwich-type composite membrane strongly attract anions (PF6-) through Lewis' acid-base interaction, allowing uniform Li+ ion transport and suppressing Li dendrites. As a result, we found that the PVAM/15%ZIF-67@CA/PVAM composite nonwoven membrane is applicable to high-power, high-safety lithium-ion battery systems that can be used in electric vehicles (EVs).

The Impact of ZIF-8 Particle Size Control on Low-Humidity Sensor Performance

An accurate humidity measurement is essential in various industries, including product stability, pharmaceutical and food preservation, environmental control, and precise humidity management in experiments and industrial processes. Crafting effective humidity sensors through precise material selection is crucial for detecting minute humidity levels across various fields, ultimately enhancing productivity and maintaining product quality. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), exhibit remarkable properties and offer a wide range of applications in catalysis, sensing, and gas storage due to their structural stability, which resembles zeolites. The previous research on MOF-based humidity sensors have primarily used electrical resistance-based methods. Recently, however, interest has shifted to capacitive-based sensors using MOFs due to the need for humidity sensors at low humidity and the resulting high sensitivity. Nevertheless, further studies are required to optimize particle structure and size. This study analyzes ZIF-8, a stable MOF synthesized in varying particle sizes, to evaluate its performance as a humidity sensor. The structural, chemical, and sensing properties of synthesized ZIF-8 particles ranging from 50 to 200 nanometers were examined through electron microscopy, spectroscopic, and electrochemical analyses. The fabricated copper electrodes combined with these particles demonstrated stable and linear humidity sensing capabilities within the range of 3% to 30% relative humidity (RH).

Tetrahedral Imidazolate Frameworks with Auxiliary Ligands (TIF-Ax): Synthetic Strategies and Applications

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are an important subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Recently, we reported a new kind of MOF, namely tetrahedral imidazolate frameworks with auxiliary ligands (TIF-Ax), by adding linear ligands (Hint) into the zinc-imidazolate system. Introducing linear ligands into the M2+-imidazolate system overcomes the limitation of imidazole derivatives. Thanks to the synergistic effect of two different types of ligands, a series of new TIF-Ax with interesting topologies and a special pore environment has been reported, and they have attracted extensive attention in gas adsorption, separation, catalysis, heavy metal ion capture, and so on. In this review, we give a comprehensive overview of TIF-Ax, including their synthesis methods, structural diversity, and multi-field applications. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and perspectives of the rational design and syntheses of new TIF-Ax from the aspects of their composition, solvent, and template. This review provides deep insight into TIF-Ax and a reference for scholars with backgrounds of porous materials, gas separation, and catalysis.

Asymmetric Supercapacitors Using Porous Carbons and Iron Oxide Electrodes Derived from a Single Fe Metal-Organic Framework (MIL-100 (Fe))

MOF-derived carbon (MDC) and metal oxide (MDMO) are superior materials for supercapacitor electrodes due to their high specific capacitances, which can be attributed to their high porosity, specific surface area (SSA), and pore volume. To improve the electrochemical performance, the environmentally friendly and industrially producible MIL-100 (Fe) was prepared using three different Fe sources through hydrothermal synthesis. MDC-A with micro- and mesopores and MDC-B with micropores were synthesized through carbonization and an HCl washing process, and MDMO (α-Fe₂O₃) was obtained by a simple sintering in air. The electrochemical properties in a three-electrode system using a 6 M KOH electrolyte were investigated. These novel MDC and MDMO were applied to an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) system to overcome the disadvantages of traditional supercapacitors, enhancing energy density, power density, and cyclic performance. High SSA materials (MDC-A nitrate and MDMO iron) were selected for negative and positive electrode material to fabricate ASC with KOH/PVP gel electrolyte. As-fabricated ASC resulted in high specific capacitance 127.4 Fg^-1 at 0.1 Ag^-1 and 48.0 Fg^-1 at 3 Ag^-1, respectively, and delivered superior energy density (25.5 Wh/kg) at a power density 60 W/kg. The charging/discharging cycling test was also conducted, indicating 90.1% stability after 5000 cycles. These results indicate that ASC with MDC and MDMO derived from MIL-100 (Fe) has promising potential in high-performance energy storage devices.

Morphology Engineering of Hybrid Supercapacitor Electrodes from Hierarchical Stem-like Carbon Networks with Flower-like MoS2 Structures

There is a critical need to develop high-performance supercapacitors that can complement and even rival batteries for energy storage. This work introduces a strategy to drastically enhance the energy storage performance of a supercapacitor by engineering electrode morphologies with ternary composites offering distinct benefits for the energy storage application. The electrodes were fabricated with conductive networks of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated with a zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) for high ion diffusivity and ion-accumulating molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) with various morphologies. These include flower-like (fMoS₂), stacked-plate (pMoS₂), and exfoliated-flake (eMoS₂) structures from topochemical synthesis. CNT-ZIF-fMoS₂ demonstrates an excellent energy density, reaching almost 80 Wh/kg, and a maximum power density of approximately 3000 W/kg in a half-cell. This is far superior to the electrodes containing pMoS₂ and eMoS₂ and attributed to the increased surface area and the faradaic reactivity offered by fMoS₂. Additionally, the CNT-ZIF-fMoS₂ electrode demonstrates exceptional stability with an ∼78% of capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles. This work suggests that the electrode morphologies can dominate the energy storage behaviors and that the heteromaterial approach may be crucial in designing next-generation supercapacitors.

In Situ Construction of Nitrogen-Doped and Zinc-Confined Microporous Carbon Enabling Efficient Na+-Storage Abilities

Benefiting from the additional active sites for sodium-ion (Na⁺) adsorption and porous architecture for electrolyte accessibility, nitrogen-doped porous carbon has been considered the alternative anode material for Na⁺-storage applications. In this study, nitrogen-doped and zinc-confined microporous carbon (N,Z-MPC) powders are successfully prepared by thermally pyrolyzing the polyhedral ZIF-8 nanoparticles under an argon atmosphere. Following the electrochemical measurements, the N,Z-MPC not only delivers good reversible capacity (423 mAh/g at 0.02 A/g) and comparable rate capability (104 mAh/g at 1.0 A/g) but also achieves a remarkable cyclability (capacity retention: 96.6% after 3000 cycles at 1.0 A/g). Those can be attributed to its intrinsic characteristics: (a) 67% of the disordered structure, (b) 0.38 nm of interplanar distance, (c) a great proportion of sp²-type carbon, (d) abundant microporosity, (e) 16.1% of nitrogen doping, and (f) existence of sodiophilic Zn species, synergistically enhancing the electrochemical performances. Accordingly, the findings observed here support the N,Z-MPC to be a potential anode material enabling exceptional Na⁺-storage abilities.

Metal-organic frameworks-derived layered double hydroxides: From controllable synthesis to various electrochemical energy storage/conversion applications

Over the past years, metal-organic frameworks (MOF) have been directly used as electrodes or as a precursor for MOF-derived materials in energy storage and conversion systems. In the wide range of existing MOF derivatives, MOF-derived layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are determined to be promising materials due to their unique structure and features. However, MOF-derived LDHs (MDL) materials can suffer from insufficient intrinsic conductivity and agglomeration during formation. Various techniques and approaches were designed and applied to tackle these problems, such as using ternary LDHs, ion-doping, sulphurization, phosphorylation, selenization, direct growth, and conductive substrates. All the mentioned enhancement techniques aim to create the ideal electrode materials with maximum performance. In this review, we gathered and discussed the most recent progressive advances, different synthesis methodologies, unsolved challenges, applications, and electrochemical and electrocatalytic performance of MDL materials. We hope this work will be a reliable source for future progress and synthesis of these materials.

Binder-free cupric-ion containing zinc sulfide nanoplates-like structure for flexible energy storage devices

Researchers have been enthusiastic about developing high-performance electrode materials based on metal chalcogenides for energy storage applications. Herein, we developed cupric ion-containing zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu) nanoplates by using a solvothermal approach. The as-synthesized ZnS:Cu nanoplates electrode was characterized and analyzed by using XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, and XPS. The binder-free flexible ZnS:Cu nanoplates exhibited excellent specific capacitance of 545 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. The CV and GCD measurements revealed that the specific capacitance was mainly attributed to the Faradaic redox mechanism. Further, the binder-free flexible ZnS:Cu nanoplates electrode retained 87.4% along with excellent Coulombic efficiency (99%) after 5000 cycles. The binder-free flexible ZnS:Cu nanoplates exhibited excellent conductivity, specific capacitance, and stability which are beneficial in energy storage systems. These findings will also open new horizons amongst material scientists toward the new direction of electrode development.

Synthesis of CNT@CoS/NiCo Layered Double Hydroxides with Hollow Nanocages to Enhance Supercapacitors Performance

One of the key factors to improve electrochemical properties is to find exceptional electrode materials. In this work, the nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (CNT@CoS/NiCo-LDH) with the structure of a hollow nanocage was prepared by etching CNT@CoS with zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a template. The results show that the addition of nickel has a great influence on the structure, morphology and chemical properties of materials. The prepared material CNT@CoS/NiCo-LDH-100 (C@CS/NCL-100) inherited the rhombic dodecahedral shape of ZIF-67 well and the CNTs were evenly interspersed among the rhombic dodecahedrons. The presence of CNTs improved the conductivity and surface area of the samples. The C@CS/NCL-100 demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 2794.6 F·g^-1 at 1 A·g^-1. Furthermore, as an assemble device, the device of C@CS/NCL-100 as a positive electrode exhibits a relatively high-energy density of 35.64 Wh·kg^-1 at a power density of 750 W·kg^-1 Further, even at the high-power density of 3750 W·kg^-1, the energy density can still retain 26.38 Wh·kg^-1. Hence, the superior performance of C@CS/NCL-100 can be ascribed to the synergy among CNTs, CoS and NiCo LDH, as well as the excellent three-dimensional structure obtained by used ZIF-67 as a template.

Improvement of the hydrogen storage performance of t-graphene-like two-dimensional boron nitride upon selected lithium decoration

In recent years, search for applicable bidimensional (2D) hydrogen storage materials with high capacity and excellent H₂ physisorption properties has attracted considerable attention from scientists and researchers. According to the rational design, and using first-principles calculations, we propose a t-graphene-like boron nitride monolayer (t-B₄N₄) for hydrogen storage application by replacing C atoms in t-graphene with B and N atoms. The thermal stability and polarization mechanisms of lithium atoms adsorbed at the center of octagons on the t-B₄N₄ system were evaluated at 300 K using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations. Moreover, Li-decorated double-sided t-B₄N₄ can store up to 32H₂ molecules with an average hydrogen adsorption energy of 0.217 eV per H₂ and a maximum hydrogen storage capacity of 12.47 wt%. The reversibility of adsorbed hydrogen was checked and the calculated desorption temperature was 161 K, much higher than the critical point for hydrogen. Based on diffusion barriers, the H₂ molecule diffusion kinetics is faster on the t-B₄N₄ surface than that on t-graphene and graphene.

Embedding an extraordinary amount of gemifloxacin antibiotic in ZIF-8 framework with one-step synthesis and measurement of its H2O2-sensitive release and potency against infectious bacteria

GEM@ZIF-8 has DLC = 69.82% and DLE = 89.03%, with controlled release dependent on H2O2 concentration, and it shows significant antibacterial activity.
