Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the immunity of chickens up to 35 d subjected to posthatch fasting and supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). A total of 320 chicks were housed in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (0 or 12 h of fasting × 0.000 or 0.025% CLA in a prestarter diet), totaling 4 treatments (No-F-12 h; F-12 h; No-CLA; CLA) with 8 replicates of 10 birds each. The relative weights (% body weight) of the spleen and bursa were determined 12 h posthatch (Post-12 h) and then weekly. Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) titers against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) were measured by ELISA in the yolk sac contents Post-12 h and in the serum weekly. Hypersensitivity to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) inoculation was evaluated by toe-web swelling response on d 13 and 34, 4 times a day (after 3 h, 6 h, 12 h, and 24 h inoculation, respectively, PHA-3 h, PHA-6 h, PHA-12 h, and PHA-24 h). The data were subjected to analysis of variance (P < 0.05). F-12h reduced the Post-12 h relative weight of the spleen, and CLA reduced the relative weight of the bursa at this stage and at 28 d. At 13 d, F-12 h reduced PHA-3 h, whereas PHA-12 h was increased by CLA. At 34 d, CLA reduced PHA-3 h. A greater reaction was observed in the No-F-12 h-CLA chicks, for the PHA-24 h. In the Post-12 h evaluation, F-12h reduced, whereas CLA increased NDV-specific IgY titers in the yolk sac. No-F-12 h-No-CLA chicks had the lowest serum titers. At 21 d, F-12 h-CLA chicks exhibited the highest serum titers. Titers were higher in the F-12 h-No-CLA chicks, when compared to other treatments. At 28 d, fasting reduced the titers. In conclusion, F-12 h and CLA accelerated the transfer of immunoglobulins from the yolk sac to the serum. F-12 h impairs cellular immunity, whereas CLA favors it.

Abstract
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a mixture of isomers of linoleic acid (C18:2 n-6), which is mostly found in the ruminant meat and dairy products. The CLA is known to have many potential health benefits, and considered a potent powerful fatty acid, which is linked to animal and human health. The present work aims to discuss the source and production, mechanism of action, and effects of CLA on humans, poultry, and ruminants by reviewing the recent studies carried out on CLA. Despite most of the recent studies indicating beneficial effects of CLA on improving body weight control parameters, its effects on reducing risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), inflammation, blood glucose, and insulin are still controversial, and need to be further studied in different hosts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This experiment investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the serum components, laying hen productivity, lipid composition of egg yolk, egg flavor and egg quality. METHODS Healthy 28-week-old Hy-Line white laying hens (n = 480) were divided randomly into 4 groups, 6 replicates/group, 20 birds/replicate. The 30-day experimental diets included 0% (control), 0.4%, 0.8%, and 1.6% CLA. Some serum indices of the birds, and egg production, quality, fatty acid composition, egg quality were measured. RESULTS The dietary supplementation with 0.4%, 0.8%, and 1.6% CLA did not significantly affect the laying rate and feed intake, as well as calcium ion and phosphorus ion concentration in serum (p>0.05). However, the CLA had significantly increased the strength of eggshell, decreased the odor, flavor, and taste of egg yolk, deepened the color of egg yolk, increased saturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, and reduced the monounsaturated fatty acids (p<0.05). On the other hand, the dietary supplementation with 1.6% CLA had significant effects on feed/gain, and improved serum hormones. Dietary supplementation with 0.4% and 0.8% CLA can significantly enhance the activity of alkaline phosphates. CONCLUSION CLA has no effect on production performance, but does enhance the lipid content of the egg yolk and the strength of the eggshell.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) on growth performance and immune responses in broiler chicks. A total of 240 day-old Arbor Acre male broiler chicks were randomly allotted into four dietary treatments with different inclusion levels of CLA (0, 2.5, 5.0 or 10.0 g/kg) for six weeks. Growth performance, peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) proliferation, lysozyme activity, phagocytic activity (carbon clearance) and serum antibody titers against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine were examined. There were no significant differences in growth performance among treatments (p > 0.05). Chicks fed CLA diets produced more lysozyme activity in serum than the control group at 2 and 6 weeks of age (p < 0.05). Dietary CLA enhanced the PBL proliferation in response to concanavalin A (ConA) at the age of 42 d (p < 0.05). Phagocytic ability was also affected by dietary CLA and chicks fed CLA diets had faster carbon clearance rate (p < 0.05), but antibody titers to NDV was not influenced by dietary CLA. The results of the study suggested that dietary CLA could enhance innate and cellular immune response in broiler chicks, and not affect the growth performance.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the growth performance and immune responses of broiler chicks fed diets supplemented with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Two hundred and forty day-old Arbor Acre male broiler chicks were randomly allotted into four dietary treatments with different inclusion levels of CLA (0, 2.5, 5.0 or 10.0 g pure CLA/kg) for 6 weeks. Growth performance, lysozyme activity, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) proliferation, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis and antibody production were investigated. There were no significant differences in growth performance among treatments (P>0.05). Chicks fed 10.0 g CLA/kg diet produced 40 % and 49 % more lysozyme activity in serum and spleen than the control group at 21 d of age (P<0.05). Dietary CLA enhanced the PBMC proliferation in response to concanavalin A at the age of 21 and 42 d (P<0.05). Systemic and peripheral blood lymphocytic synthesis of PGE2 in chicks fed 10.0 g CLA/kg diet was significantly decreased by 57 % and 42 % compared to chicks fed control diet (P<0.05). Antibody production to sheep red blood cell and bovine serum albumin were elevated in either 2.5 or 10.0 g CLA/kg dietary treatments (P<0.05). The results indicated dietary CLA could enhance the immune response in broiler chicks, but did not alter the growth performance.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on performance and immune responses of weaned pigs. In Exp. I, 72 crossbred pigs weaned at 19 to 23 days of age and weighing 7.20 +/- 0.11 kg were randomly allotted to four diets supplemented with CLA at 0, 1, 2 or 3%. On day 14, pigs were injected with ovalbumin (1mg per kg BW) and blood samples were collected on day 7 and 14 after injection to test the specific OVA antibody. In Exp. II, 36 crossbred pigs weaned at 26 to 30 days of age and weighing 8.12 +/- 0.14 kg were randomly divided into two diets containing either 0 or 2% CLA. On day 14 and 28, blood samples were obtained to determine the lymphocyte proliferation and PGE2 levels in both trials, and CD4+, CD8+ T cells subsets and interleukin-1beta production were tested in Exp. II. In Exp. I both average daily gain and average daily feed intake of weaned pigs were improved quadratically and feed efficiency was increased linearly by CLA supplementation. Lymphocyte proliferation response to concanavalin A was increased quadratically as dietary CLA concentration increased on day 14 and 28. Ovalbumin antibody production levels were increased linearly on day 7 after injection of ovalbumin and increased quadratically on day 14 after injection, which follows the increased CLA levels, whereas CLA reduced linearly the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). The results of Exp. II indicated that CLA improved performance, lymphocyte proliferation, and increased the CD8+ lymphocyte population, while reduced the production of PGE2 and interleukin-lbeta (IL- 1beta). These results suggest that the supplementation of CLA enhanced lymphocyte proliferation function, possibly by regulating the PGE2 production, and improved growth performance of pigs. Further studies are needed to determine the mechanism of CLA-induced inhibition of IL-1beta production.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate possible additive or synergistic action among sphingomyelin (SPH), cis-9,trans-11-conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and butyrate (BTY) against colon cancer and modulation of immune functions in vivo in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Each of the 5 groups of rats was fed either 35 mg SPH, 100 mg CLA, or 100 mg BTY/kg body weight, a combination of the 3 compounds at the same doses, or none of the compounds, for 7 wk. Rats were injected with azoxymethane, a colon carcinogen, to induce the formation of aberrant crypt foci, preneoplastic lesions of colon cancer. Parameters measured included number and multiplicity (number of crypts per focus) of aberrant crypts, immune functions such as innate immunity (natural killer cell cytotoxicity), humoral immunity (development of antibodies), and cell-mediated immunity (delayed-type hypersensitivity). Results show that the groups treated with SPH, CLA, and BTY individually had significantly higher natural killer cell (NK) cytotoxicity than the group treated with all compounds. The CLA group also had significantly higher NK activity than the control group. This study shows that the three compounds may not act additively or synergistically either to inhibit the development of aberrant crypts or to enhance immune functions. In fact, exposure to the combined compounds may be antagonistic to enhancement of NK function by the individual chemicals.
