Abstract
The leading cause of death in patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to determine whether the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) in veterans with GCA and PMR could have a cardio-modulatory effect as compared to nonuse. Patients with GCA and PMR were identified through the Veterans Affairs Informatics and Computing Infrastructure. After a 2:1 propensity score matching for SSRI or SNRI users, we identified nonusers with similar covariates. We then applied a multivariate logistic regression (MLR), to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for cardiovascular event (CVE) outcomes within 5 years after the index date. Related hazard ratios (HR) were also calculated to validate the discovery of our findings. We identified 2249 patients with GCA and 3906 patients with PMR. Among patients with GCA, 174 (27%) SSRI users had incident cardiovascular disease as compared to 47 (28%) SNRI users and 277 (19%) nonusers; in the PMR cohort, 108 (13%) were SSRI users compared to 71 (15%) SNRI users and 255 (11%) nonusers. The adjusted ORs of the CVE outcome associated with venlafaxine (2.44, p=0.01) and sertraline (1.45, p=0.04) were significantly greater than 1 in GCA, with similar results observed in the PMR cohort (2.01, p=0.02, and 1.45, p=0.04, respectively). Cox-regression analysis was also conducted, and the hazard ratios were qualitatively consistent with the MLR analysis. In conclusion, the adjusted risk of CVE in patients with GCA or PMR using either venlafaxine or sertraline was higher than that in the non-exposed groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE Brown adipose tissue (BAT), located in the supraclavicular region, has been associated with a better cardiometabolic profile and reduced risk of developing non-communicable chronic diseases (NCD), in addition to being associated with a healthier phenotype in obesity. However, it is unknown whether greater supraclavicular adipose tissue activity could be associated with a healthier metabolic profile in people already diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Thus, the present work evaluated if supraclavicular adipose tissue activity is associated with metabolic and molecular markers in individuals with T2DM. METHODS Based on a cluster study, individuals with T2DM were divided into groups according to high or low-standard uptake value (SUV) evaluated in the supraclavicular adipose tissue area by [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) after mild cold exposure). Functional, biochemical, inflammatory, and molecular markers were measured. RESULTS When we evaluated the whole sample, women showed higher SUV, which favored a difference between groups in sex-related markers. On the other hand, volunteers in the high-SUV group showed lower BMI, monocytes count, triglycerides/glucose index (TYG-index) and z score of metabolic syndrome (MS) values, as well as lower triglycerides, and VLDL concentrations. Moreover, they also had enhanced expression of thermogenic genes in subcutaneous fat. When analyzing only women, the differences in markers associated with sex disappear, and a lower count of leukocytes, platelets, along with lower TYG-index, z score of MS values, and triglycerides, VLDL, LDL, and TNFα concentrations were observed in women with the high SUV. In addition, higher expression of thermogenic genes and BECN1 were detected. CONCLUSION Higher supraclavicular adipose tissue SUV in individuals with T2DM is associated with a better cardiometabolic/inflammatory profile and expression of thermogenic genes. Abstract
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are environmental pollutants linked to health risks, including increased platelet (PLT) levels that may elevate the risk of thrombosis and cardiovascular diseases. This study examined the association between BFR exposure and PLT levels among 5831 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2007-2016). Of the 12 BFRs analyzed, BB153, BDE17, BDE85, BDE154, BDE183, and BDE209 showed significant positive correlations with PLT levels (p < 0.05), with BDE17 demonstrating the strongest correlation (Spearman's coefficient = 0.122). After adjusting for confounders, all BFRs except BDE153 remained significantly associated with elevated PLT levels. Restricted cubic spline analysis indicated varying associations, with BDE99, BDE183, and BDE209 showing an "S"-shaped relationship, while BB153, BDE17, and BDE66 presented an inverted "J"-shaped relationship. BDE153 exhibited a "U"-shaped relationship with PLT level. Both weighted quantile sum regression and quantile-based g-computation confirmed that BFR mixtures positively correlated with PLT levels, with BDE17 as the most significant contributor. Our findings suggest that BFR exposure is associated with increased PLT levels, indicating a potential risk for thrombosis and related cardiovascular conditions.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between platelet count (PC) and mortality in patients with hemorrhagic stroke (HS). The research reviewed data from 10,466 patients hospitalized in 208 hospitals in the United States from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2015. Of these, 3262 HS patients were included in the primary analysis for those admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). The average age of these patients was 67.05 years, with 52.79% being male. The median PC was (221.67 ± 73.78) × 109/L. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that PC was a protective factor for mortality in HS patients (OR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.97-1.00, P < 0.05). Additionally, a non-linear association between PC and mortality in HS patients was found using a generalized additive model (GAM) and smooth curve fitting (penalty spline method). For the first time, a recursive algorithm identified the inflection point of platelet count as 194 × 109/L. On the left side of the inflection point, for every increase of 10 units in platelet count, the mortality rate of HS patients decreases by 10%. The study demonstrates a non-linear relationship between PC and the risk of mortality in HS patients. A platelet counts higher than the inflection point (194 × 109/L) may be a significant intervention to reduce mortality in HS patients.

Abstract
Silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) have been widely applied in diverse areas, thus causing the extensive release through multiple routes. Their toxicological effects, especially for the disturbance in hematological homeostasis, have raised public concern. Considering the detrimental role of excessive platelets in many cardiovascular diseases, the regulation of platelet formation offers a unique aspect for studying the blood compatibility of nanomaterials. In this study, the effects of SiO2 NPs with four sizes (80, 120, 200, and 400 nm) were investigated on the maturation and differentiation of the megakaryocytes into platelets. The results showed that SiO2 NPs promoted megakaryocyte development as manifested by the occurrence of irregular cell morphology, enlargement of cell size, increases in DNA content and DNA ploidy, and formation of spore-like protrusions. The expression of megakaryocyte-specific antigen (CD41a) was up-regulated, due to SiO2 NP treatments. The correlation analysis of SiO2 NP size with the above test bioindicators showed that the smaller the SiO2 NPs were, the stronger effects they induced. Moreover, exposure to SiO2 NPs induced the up-regulation of both GATA-1 and FLI-1, while the transcriptional expressions of aNF-E2 and fNF-E2 remained unchanged. The significant positive correlation of GATA-1 and FLI-1 with megakaryocytic maturation and differentiation suggested their crucial roles in the SiO2 NP-promoted effect. The finding herein provided new insight into the potential health risk of SiO2 NPs by perturbing the platelet-involved hematological homeostasis.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are one of the main sources of the nanoparticulate matter exposure to humans. Although several studies have demonstrated their potential toxic effects, the real nature of the correlation between NP properties and their interaction with biological targets is still far from being fully elucidated. Here, engineered TiO2 NPs with various geometries (bipyramids, plates, and rods) have been prepared, characterized and intravenously administered in healthy mice. Parameters such as biodistribution, accumulation, and toxicity have been assessed in the lungs and liver. Our data show that the organ accumulation of TiO2 NPs, measured by ICP-MS, is quite low, and this is only partially and transiently affected by the NP geometries. The long-lasting permanence is exclusively restricted to the lungs. Here, bipyramids and plates show a higher accumulation, and interestingly, rod-shaped NPs are the most toxic, leading to histopathological pulmonary alterations. In addition, they are also able to induce a transient increase in serum markers related to hepatocellular injury. These results indicate that rods, more than bipyramidal and spherical geometries, lead to a stronger and more severe biological effect. Overall, small physico-chemical differences can dramatically modify both accumulation and safety.

Abstract
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), represented by cardiovascular diseases and cancer, have been the leading cause of death globally. Improvements in mortality from cardiovascular (CV) diseases (decrease of 14%/100,000, United States) or cancers (increase 7.5%/100,000, United States) seem unsatisfactory during the past two decades, and so the search for innovative and accurate biomarkers of early diagnosis and prevention, and novel treatment strategies is a valuable clinical and economic endeavor. Both tumors and cardiovascular system are rich in angiological systems that maintain material exchange, signal transduction and distant regulation. This pattern determines that they are strongly influenced by circulating substances, such as glycolipid metabolism, inflammatory homeostasis and cyclic non-coding RNA and so forth. Platelets, a group of small anucleated cells, inherit many mature proteins, mRNAs, and non-coding RNAs from their parent megakaryocytes during gradual formation and manifest important roles in inflammation, angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, stroke, myocardial infarction, diabetes, cancer, and many other diseases apart from its classical function in hemostasis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs containing ∼22 nucleotides that participate in many key cellular processes by pairing with mRNAs at partially complementary binding sites for post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Platelets contain fully functional miRNA processors in their microvesicles and are able to transport their miRNAs to neighboring cells and regulate their gene expression. Therefore, the importance of platelet-derived miRNAs for the human health is of increasing interest. Here, we will elaborate systematically the roles of platelet-derived miRNAs in cardiovascular disease and cancer in the hope of providing clinicians with new ideas for early diagnosis and therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Background Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are submicron membrane-bound vesicles released from various cells, which are emerging as a potential novel biomarker in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) due to their procoagulatory and prothrombotic properties. However, there is little information about the relationships between circulating EVs and conventional and thrombogenic risk markers of CVDs. Objective To investigate the relationships between circulating EVs, conventional cardiovascular risk markers and thrombogenic markers in subjects with moderate risk of CVDs. Design Subjects (n = 40) aged 40-70 years with moderate risk of CVDs were recruited and assessed for body mass index, blood pressure and plasma lipid profile, as well as platelet aggregation, clot formation, thrombin generation and fibrinolysis. Numbers of circulating EVs were assessed by Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis and flow cytometry. A range of assays were used to assess the procoagulatory activity of plasma and circulating EVs. Results Circulating EV numbers were positively associated with body mass index, blood pressure, plasma triacylglycerol concentration and overall CVD risk. Higher circulating EV numbers were also associated with increased thrombin generation and enhanced clot formation, and EVs isolated from subjects with moderate CVD risk promoted thrombin generation ex vivo. Higher numbers of endothelial-derived EVs were associated with a greater tendency for clot lysis. Plasma triacylglycerol concentration and diastolic blood pressure independently predicted circulating EV numbers, and EV numbers independently predicted aspects of thrombin generation and clot formation and 10-year CVD risk. Conclusion Circulating EVs were strongly associated with both conventional and thrombogenic risk markers of CVDs, and also with overall CVD risk, highlighting a potentially important role for EVs in CVDs.

Abstract
The Mediterranean diet (Med-Diet) is considered the most effective dietary patterns to obtain weight loss in NAFLD patients. Previous evidence suggested that Med-Diet adherence could reduce cardiovascular risk and have a beneficial effect on NAFLD severity. Aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between Med-Diet adherence, platelet activation (PA), and liver collagen deposition. The study was performed in 655 consecutive NAFLD outpatients from the PLINIO study, a prospective observational cohort study aimed to identify non-conventional predictors of liver fibrosis progression in NAFLD. PA was measured by the serum thromboxane B2 (TxB2), and liver collagen deposition by N-terminal propeptide of type III collagen (Pro-C3). Adherence to the Med-diet was investigated by a short nine-item validated dietary questionnaire. Patients with high Med-Diet adherence were older and had less metabolic syndrome and lower serum triglycerides, GGT, TxB2, and Pro-C3. At multivariate regression analyses, in the linear model, the Med-Diet score negatively correlated with both TxB2 (Beta = −0.106; p = 0.009) and Pro-C3 (Beta = −0.121; p = 0.002) and in the logistic model high adherence inversely correlated with higher TxB2 tertiles (II tertile: OR = 0.576, p = 0.044; III tertile: OR = 0.556, p = 0.026) and Pro-C3 tertile (III tertile: OR = 0.488, p = 0.013). Low consumption of red meat inversely correlated with higher TxB2 tertile (II tertile: OR = 0.448, p < 0.001, III tertile: OR = 0.567, p = 0.004). In conclusion, NAFLD patients with high adherence to the Med-Diet show lower PA and liver collagen deposition, suggesting a protective role of the Med-Diet against NAFLD progression and cardiovascular risk. In addition, the correlation between TxB2 and Pro-C3 suggests a link between NAFLD severity and cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The signal peptide-CUB-EGF domain-containing protein-1 (SCUBE1) is a recently available biomarker which is expressed by activated and adhered platelets. In present study, we aimed to investigate the association between SCUBE1 levels and thrombus burden in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). METHODS A total of 88 patients who were diagnosed with STEMI and underwent PPCI were prospectively included between July 2019 and August 2019. Blood samples were collected for routine biochemistry and serum SCUBE1 levels before PPCI and antiplatelet therapy. Angiographic coronary thrombus burden was classified based on thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) thrombus grades. We formed two groups based on the thrombus grade: 37 (42%) patients had high thrombus burden whereas 51 (58%) patients had low thrombus burden. RESULTS The mean age of study population was 58.2 ± 11.8 years (34% female). The mean peak troponin I level, SCUBE1 level, SYNTAX score, and pain-to-balloon time were significantly higher in the high thrombus burden group compared to the low thrombus burden group (p < .05, for all). In ROC analysis, SCUBE1 level >65.63 ng/dL had a sensitivity of 91.9% and a specificity of 76.6% to predict high thrombus burden (AUC: 0.9256; p < .001). In multivariate analysis, SCUBE1 level (HR: 1.133, p = .004) and troponin (HR: 1.002; 95% CI 1.001-1.004, p = .003) were independent predictors of high thrombus burden. CONCLUSION In the present study, we showed that SCUBE1, a novel platelet-endothelial adhesion molecule and a marker of platelet activation, is an independent predictor of high thrombus burden in patients with STEMI.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Increased neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation associates with high cardiovascular risk and mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, the effect of transplantation on NETs and its associated markers remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize circulating citrullinated Histone H3 (H3cit) and Peptidyl Arginase Deiminase 4 (PAD4) in ESRD patients undergoing transplantation and evaluate the ability of their neutrophils to release NETs.This prospective cohort study included 80 healthy donors and 105 ESRD patients, out of which 95 received a transplant. H3cit and PAD4 circulating concentration was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in healthy donors and ESRD patients at the time of enrollment. An additional measurement was carried out within the first 6 months after transplant surgery. In vitro NET formation assays were performed in neutrophils isolated from healthy donors, ESRD patients, and transplant recipients.H3cit and PAD4 levels were significantly higher in ESRD patients (H3cit, 14.38 ng/mL [5.78-27.13]; PAD4, 3.22 ng/mL [1.21-6.82]) than healthy donors (H3cit, 6.45 ng/mL [3.30-11.65], P < .0001; PAD4, 2.0 ng/mL [0.90-3.18], P = .0076). H3cit, but not PAD4, increased after transplantation, with 44.2% of post-transplant patients exhibiting high levels (≥ 27.1 ng/mL). In contrast, NET release triggered by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate was higher in neutrophils from ESRD patients (70.0% [52.7-94.6]) than healthy donors (32.2% [24.9-54.9], P < .001) and transplant recipients (19.5% [3.5-65.7], P < .05).The restoration of renal function due to transplantation could not reduce circulating levels of H3cit and PAD4 in ESRD patients. Furthermore, circulating H3cit levels were significantly increased after transplantation. Neutrophils from transplant recipients exhibit a reduced ability to form NETs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although airborne fine particulate matter (PM) pollution has been demonstrated as an independent risk factor for pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, their currently-available toxicological data is still far from sufficient to explain the cause-and-effect. Platelets can regulate a variety of physiological and pathological processes, and the epidemiological study has indicated a positive association between PM exposure and the increased number of circulative platelets. As one of the target organs for PM pollution, the lung has been found to be involved in the storage of platelet progenitor cells (i.e. megakaryocytes) and thrombopoiesis. Whether PM exposure influences thrombopoiesis or not is thus explored in the present study by investigating the differentiation of megakaryocytes upon PM treatment. RESULTS The results showed that PM exposure promoted the thrombopoiesis in an exposure concentration-dependent manner. PM exposure induced the megakaryocytic maturation and development by causing cell morphological changes, occurrence of DNA ploidy, and alteration in the expressions of biomarkers for platelet formation. The proteomics assay demonstrated that the main metabolic pathway regulating PM-incurred alteration of megakaryocytic maturation and thrombopoiesis was the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) process. Furthermore, airborne PM sample promoted-thrombopoiesis from megakaryocytes was related to particle size, but independent of sampling filters. CONCLUSION The findings for the first time unveil the potential perturbation of haze exposure in thrombopoiesis from megakaryocytes by regulating mitochondrial OXPHOS. The substantial evidence on haze particle-incurred hematotoxicity obtained herein provided new insights for assessing the hazardous health risks from PM pollution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation has an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) is accepted as an indicator of inflammation. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to scrutinize the relationship between LMR and subclinical atherosclerosis (SubAth) measured by carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in subclinical hypothyroidism (SubHT). METHODS Newly identified 190 SubHT patients were prospectively included into the study. Blood samples were taken for measuring laboratory parameters. Then, CIMT was computed. Patients were seperated into 2 groups by their CIMT value (Group-1: ≤0.9 and Group-2: >0.9 mm), and then stratified into tertiles pursuant to LMR and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, respectively. RESULTS 59 patients had an increased CIMT value (Group-2), and 131 patients had a normal CIMT value (Group-1). Group-2 had a lower LMR and a greater high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), CIMT and TSH than Group-1 (for all, p < 0.05). Patients in the lowest tertile of LMR had a higher hsCRP, TSH and CIMT than those in the highest tertile (for all, p < 0.05). LMR was negatively associated with hsCRP, CIMT and TSH (for all, p < 0.05). LMR and TSH were independent predictors of increased CIMT. CONCLUSIONS Pre-ultrasonographic LMR, which is a simple and inexpensive inflammatory marker, may give additional predictive information to determine SubAth in SubHT.

Abstract
In chronic kidney disease, hyperphosphatemia upregulates the Ca2+ channel ORAI and its activating Ca2+ sensor STIM in megakaryocytes and platelets. ORAI1 and STIM1 accomplish store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) and play a key role in platelet activation. Signaling linking phosphate to upregulation of ORAI1 and STIM1 includes transcription factor NFAT5 and serum and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase SGK1. In vascular smooth muscle cells, the effect of hyperphosphatemia on ORAI1/STIM1 expression and SOCE is suppressed by Mg2+ and the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) agonist Gd3+. The present study explored whether sustained exposure to Mg2+ or Gd3+ interferes with the phosphate-induced upregulation of NFAT5, SGK1, ORAI1,2,3, STIM1,2 and SOCE in megakaryocytes. To this end, human megakaryocytic Meg-01 cells were treated with 2 mM ß-glycerophosphate for 24 h in the absence and presence of either 1.5 mM MgCl2 or 50 µM GdCl3. Transcript levels were estimated utilizing q-RT-PCR, protein abundance by Western blotting, cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) by Fura-2 fluorescence and SOCE from the increase in [Ca2+]i following re-addition of extracellular Ca2+ after store depletion with thapsigargin (1 µM). As a result, Mg2+ and Gd3+ upregulated CaSR and blunted or virtually abolished the phosphate-induced upregulation of NFAT5, SGK1, ORAI1,2,3, STIM1,2 and SOCE in megakaryocytes. In conclusion, Mg2+ and the CaSR agonist Gd3+ interfere with phosphate-induced dysregulation of [Ca2+]i in megakaryocytes.

Abstract
Impairment of renal phosphate elimination in chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to enhanced plasma and tissue phosphate concentration, which in turn up-regulates transcription factor NFAT5 and serum & glucocorticoid-inducible kinase SGK1. The kinase upregulates ORAI1, a Ca2+-channel accomplishing store-operated Ca2+-entry (SOCE). ORAI1 is stimulated following intracellular store depletion by Ca2+-sensors STIM1 and/or STIM2. In megakaryocytes and blood platelets SOCE and thus ORAI1 are powerful regulators of activity. The present study explored whether the phosphate-donor ß-glycerophosphate augments NFAT5, ORAI1,2,3 and/or STIM1,2 expressions and thus SOCE in megakaryocytes. Human megakaryocytic Meg01cells were exposed to 2 mM of phosphate-donor ß-glycerophosphate for 24 hours. Platelets were isolated from blood samples of patients with impaired kidney function or control volunteers. Transcript levels were estimated utilizing q-RT-PCR, cytosolic Ca2+-concentration ([Ca2+]i) by Fura-2-fluorescence, and SOCE from increase of [Ca2+]i following re-addition of extracellular Ca2+ after store depletion with thapsigargin (1 µM). NFAT5 and ORAI1 protein abundance was estimated with Western blots. As a result, ß-glycerophosphate increased NFAT5, ORAI1/2/3, STIM1/2 transcript levels, as well as SOCE. Transcript levels of NFAT5, SGK1, ORAI1/2/3, and STIM1/2 as well as NFAT5 and ORAI1 protein abundance were significantly higher in platelets isolated from patients with impaired kidney function than in platelets from control volunteers. In conclusion, phosphate-donor ß-glycerophosphate triggers a signaling cascade of NFAT5/SGK1/ORAI/STIM, thus up-regulating store-operated Ca2+-entry.

Abstract
Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) gene has been identified as novel susceptibility locus for ischaemic stroke (IS) previously. However, regulation of SYK gene remains unknown in IS. In this study, we aimed to identify miRNAs that might be involved in the development of IS by targeting SYK gene. miRNAs were firstly screened by bioinformatics predicting tool. The expression levels of SYK gene were detected by qRT-PCR and western blotting, respectively, after miRNA transfection. Luciferase reporter assay was applied to investigate the direct binding between miRNAs and target gene. miRNA levels were detected by miRNA TaqMan assays in the blood cells of 270 IS patients and 270 control volunteers. Results suggest that SYK gene might be a direct target of miR-129-2-3p. The blood level of miR-129-2-3p was significantly lower in IS patients (P < 0.05), and negatively associated with the risk of IS (adjusted OR: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.80-0.98; P = 0.021) by multivariable logistic regression analysis. The blood levels of SYK gene were significantly higher in IS patients, and miR-129-2-3p expression was negatively correlated with mean platelet volume. In summary, our study suggests that miR-129-2-3p might be involved in the pathogenesis of IS through interrupting SYK expression and the platelet function, and further investigation is needed to explore the underlying mechanism.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that there is platelet activation in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our objective is to evaluate mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) in patients with overlap syndrome (OS), that is, concurrent COPD with OSAS. Mean platelet volume and PDW were assessed in consecutive patients who had undergone polysomnography and pulmonary function testing. They were divided into the following groups: controls (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] <5/hour, and forced expiratory volume in 1st second [FEV1]/forced vital capacity [FVC] >70%), OSAS group (AHI ≥5/hour and FEV1/FVC >70%), and OS group (AHI ≥5/hour and FEV1/FVC <70%). A total of 485 patients (360 males and 125 females) were included. Mean platelet volume in controls was lower compared with the other groups: 10 ± 0.9 fL for controls versus 10.3 ± 1.2 fL for OSAS ( P = .006), versus 10.7 ± 1 fL for OS ( P < .001). Additionally, MPV was higher in OS group than OSAS: 10.7 ± 1 fL versus 10.3 ± 1.2 fL, respectively ( P = .002). Platelet distribution width was lower in controls compared with the other groups: 12.9 ± 2 fL for controls versus 13.6 ± 1.9 fL for OSAS ( P = .007), versus 13.8 ± 2.3 fL for OS ( P = .008), while there was no difference between OS and OSAS groups. Mean platelet volume and PDW are increased in patients with OS compared with healthy controls, with respiratory function being the major contributor in platelet activation in this series.

Abstract
High-sensitivity troponin I (hsTnI) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) are predictors of coronary artery disease. Recently, routine hematological parameters emerged as mortality predictors. We examined the predictive value of hematological parameters (from the Utrecht Patient Oriented Database) and hsTnI and NT-pro-BNP for mortality in a coronary angiography population (Utrecht Coronary Biobank n = 1913). Using Cox regression, receiver operating characteristics, integrated discrimination improvement (IDI), and continuous net reclassification improvement (cNRI) analysis, we compared the predictive properties of hematological parameters with hsTnI and NT-pro-BNP for mortality. During a median follow-up duration of 1.8 years, 77 deaths occurred. A panel of 7 hematological parameters (leukocyte count, reticulocyte mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell [RBC] green (FL1) fluorescence, %neutrophils, %large [>120 fL] RBCs, %monocytes, and coefficient of variation of neutrophil complexity) was highly predictive. Added to clinical characteristics, hematological parameters (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.855, P < .001; IDI: 0.04, P = .02; cNRI: 0.41, P < .001) were better predictors than hsTnI (AUC: 0.818) or NT-pro-BNP (AUC: 0.834) alone or combined (AUC: 0.834). Hematological parameters may provide mortality risk information following coronary angiography and may be superior to hsTnI and/or NT-pro-BNP.
