Abstract
Heifers that conceive early in the breeding season are key to the maintenance of a compact calving pattern in seasonal dairy herds. The purpose of this prospective observational study was to determine whether a single pre-breeding examination is useful in predicting future reproductive and calving performance in dairy heifers. This evaluation was based on a matrix of easily measurable variables which could be applied to seasonal, pasture-based dairy heifers. The matrix variables were; body weight (≥55% mature body weight at mating start date), body condition score (≥3.5), and the presence of a corpus luteum. Seasonal, pasture-based dairy heifers (n = 572) on six commercial dairy farms were examined at an average of 28 days prior to the breeding season. At this examination, they were classified as READY (meeting all three of the above criteria), INTERMEDIATE (meeting one or two of the above criteria) or PROBLEM (meeting none of the above criteria) based on the matrix and then exposed to a routine artificial insemination (AI) breeding period followed by bull breeding depending on individual farm management. Subsequent pregnancy status was determined by transrectal ultrasonography initially at 30-60 days in calf (DIC), and confirmed at over 60 DIC. After the breeding season, 519 (96%) of heifers were determined to be pregnant, of which 345 (64%) became pregnant within the first three weeks of the breeding season. Farmers collected calving data; including calving difficulty score, from the heifers the following spring. A logistic regression model was used to analyse the association between the matrix categories and the following outcomes: reproductive (21 day submission rate, 1st AI conception rate, 3 wk and 6 wk in calf rate) and calving (assistance and dystocia). Heifers classified as PROBLEM had significantly lower odds of conceiving to the first AI serve and of becoming pregnant within the first three and six weeks of the breeding season (P ≤ 0.05). In conclusion, the proposed matrix could be practically useful for classifying heifers prior to the breeding season.

Abstract
Evaluating traits that allow breeders to increase production efficiency in beef production systems is important. The mouth size (MS) score is a trait easily measured and implemented by breeders. Bite size is related to MS in beef cattle and is a determinant of daily feed intake of pasture-raised animals, influencing their growth. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for MS, weaning weight (WW) and postweaning weight gain (PWG) of Nelore cattle and to evaluate the influence of the interaction between MS and WW on PWG. Phenotypic records of 134,282 Nelore animals born between 1995 and 2019 were used. Variance components were estimated using multitrait animal model with the Bayesian method. The model included the contemporary group as fixed effect, age at measurement of the trait as linear covariate, and direct additive genetic and residual effects as random effects. For WW, random maternal and maternal permanent environmental effects were added to the model. A Bayesian approach was used to analyze the interaction between WW clusters and MS. The heritability estimates were 0.24, 0.15, and 0.23 for MS, WW, and PWG, respectively. The genetic correlation between variables studied ranged from 0.24 to 0.46. The results suggest that animals with a larger mouth tend to have greater PWG, demonstrating the positive influence of MS score on the postweaning performance of cattle. The direct heritability estimates confirm the possibility of selecting animals for the traits studied.

Abstract
This study aimed to clarify the relationship between the maternal pelvis and calf size in normal and dystocia groups (Experiment 1) and to establish a method to predict dystocia due to physical imbalance between foetus and maternal pelvis before calving based on the parameters found in Experiment 1 (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, 26 pairs of dams and their offspring were tested immediately after calving, and various parameters of offspring size and maternal pelvis were measured in normal and dystocia cases. The longitudinal diameter of the maternal pelvis was smaller (P < 0.01), and ratios of the offspring's birth weight and the width of the hoof crown (hoof width; measured using callipers) to the longitudinal diameter of the maternal pelvis were larger (P < 0.01) in the dystocia group than those in the normal group. In Experiment 2, 37 cows were tested, and in addition to the measurement items of Experiment 1, the inner pelvic diameter and the foetal hoof width were measured via ultrasonography at 285 days of gestation. The ratio of the internal diameter of the maternal pelvis (longitudinal diameter, transverse diameter, and area) to the foetal hoof width was compared and was greater (P < 0.01) in the dystocia group than in the normal group. In conclusion, the risk of dystocia can be estimated by the ratio of the foetal hoof width to the longitudinal diameter of the maternal pelvis before calving.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dystocia has serious consequences for both mother and offspring. This study therefore aimed to identify risk factors for dystocia in vaginally delivered spring born beef calves in Great Britain (GB). METHODS Information on calving assistance, calf sex, birthweight, breed, twinning, dam parity and body condition score (BCS) was collected from 1131 calves across 84 GB farms. Variables were modelled against calving assistance as a binary response variable. RESULTS Twins (Odds Ratio [OR] = 5.45), Charolais calves (OR = 3.24), calves from primiparous dams (OR = 5.75) and male calves (OR = 1.75) were at significantly increased risk of requiring calving assistance across all models. Calves born to cows classed as thin (BCS < 2.5/5) were identified in the univariate analysis and in one of the multivariate models (OR = 1.92) as having an increased likelihood of dystocia. CONCLUSIONS Most beef herds have limited scope to manage cows on the basis of fetal gender and number. However, calf breed, dam body condition and management of primiparous dams can be manipulated to reduce the risk of dystocia and improve supervision. Poor body condition is a novel risk factor for dystocia in beef cows and worthy of further investigation.

Abstract
We evaluated the daily and hourly vaginal temperature changes and the relationships between the dams' breed and parity by using a commercially available vaginal temperature sensor in 72 Holstein (Hol) calvings and 101 Japanese Black (JB) calvings. Vaginal temperature sensors inserted 7-10 days before the expected calving day sounded two alerts: when the temperature fell below the threshold (Alert 1), and when the sensor reached the ambient temperature after falling out of the dam's vagina with the rupture of the allantoic sac (Alert 2). The durations from Alert 1 to Alert 2 (Time 1) and from Alert 2 to delivery (Time 2) were calculated. Only Time 1 in the Hol group tended to be affected by parity and parity × calf body weight. In the JB group, none of the factors examined affected Time 1 or Time 2. The alert detection rates did not differ by parity in either breed or by the temperature threshold in Hol. However, the Hol group's alert detection rate was significantly lower than the JB group's (p < 0.05). The daily average temperature was higher in the Hol group and the primiparous dams than those in the JB and multiparous dams; it increased slightly from Day -7 to -3 (Day 0 = the day of calving) and then dropped dramatically on Days -1 and 0. The hourly vaginal temperature difference from -48 h of calving showed a typical pattern, i.e., a decrease from -30 h of Alert 1 and an increase at -6 h of Alert 1. The decrease and increase might be the regression of the pregnant corpus luteum and the beginning of the contractions, respectively. The temperature differences were significantly affected by parity and calving ease (p < 0.01). The primiparous dams showed wider temperature differences compared to the multiparous dams in both breeds (p < 0.001). No typical temperature difference pattern was observed in assisted calving or dystocia. The alert detection rate, the Time durations, and the vaginal temperature differences were affected by the dams' breed and parity. However, measuring vaginal temperatures proved useful for predicting the calving regardless of the breed and parity. The effect of calving ease remains unclear due to the low number of assisted calvings herein.

Abstract
One key area where animal welfare may relate to productivity is through reproductive performance. This study assesses welfare on 25 extensively managed pastoral New Zealand beef farms, and explores the relationship between welfare and reproductive performance. Relationships between welfare measures and key reproductive performance indicators (pregnancy rate, weaning rate, mating period and bull: cow ratio) are investigated using an exploratory principal components analysis and linear regression model. Seven welfare measures (thinness, poor rumen fill, dirtiness, blindness, mortality, health checks of pregnant cows and yarding frequency/year) showed a potential influence on reproductive performance, and lameness was retained individually as a potential measure. Mean pregnancy rates, in both 2018 (PD18) and 2017 (PD17), were ~91% and mean weaning rate was 84%. Of the welfare measures, only lameness had a direct association with pregnancy rate, as well as a confounding effect on the association between mating period and pregnancy rate. The bull: cow ration (mean 1:31) and reproductive conditions (dystocia, abortion, vaginal prolapse) did not influence pregnancy and weaning rates. In the study population, there was no clear association between welfare and reproductive performance, except for the confounding effects of lameness.

The greatest loss in ruminant production systems occurs during the neonatal period. The maternal environment (nutrition and physiologic status) influences neonatal mortality and morbidity as it reportedly affects (a) Dystocia, both via increasing birth weight and placental dysfunction; (b) Neonatal thermoregulation, both via altering the amount of brown adipose tissue and its ability to function via effects upon the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis; (c) Modification of the developing immune system and its symbiotic nutrient sources; (d) Modification of maternal and neonatal behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the past 10 years, the frequency of unplanned cesarean sections in the Labrador Retriever breeding colony at Guiding Eyes for the Blind stayed around 10% (range 5% to 28%). To reduce the number of cesarean sections, factors influencing the occurrence of a cesarean section need to be known. The goal of this study was to identify factors that contribute to the decision to perform a cesarean section. RESULTS Of the 688 Labrador Retriever litters whelped between 2003 and 2016, 667 litters had sufficient data and remained in the analysis. The target trait was ordinal with the three levels "normal whelping", "assisted whelping" and "cesarean section". A general ordinal logistic regression approach was used to analyze the data. Model selection with possible predictors resulted in a final model including weight of the dam, the weight of the heaviest puppy of a litter, the number of fetuses malpositioned and the quality of uterine contractions. Weight and size of a litter, parity, maternal inbreeding coefficient, whelping season, dam and sire were dropped from the model because they were not significant. The risk of a cesarean section was influenced by the combination of the weight of the dam and the weight of the heaviest puppy in the litter, as well as by the number of malpositioned fetuses and the quality of the contractions. Larger puppies increased the risk of cesarean section especially when the dam had a lighter weight. For dams weighing 23.6 kg and 32.8 kg the predicted probability of a cesarean section was low, with 0.06 and 0.02, respectively, when the heaviest puppy in a litter was light (0.42 kg), contractions were normal and no fetus was malpositioned. However, the probability of a cesarean section was much higher, ranging from 0.24 to 0.08, when the heaviest puppy in a litter was heavy (0.66 kg). CONCLUSIONS Means to reduce the cesarean section frequency in this Labrador Retriever breeding colony should include genetic selection for ideal puppy weight. In addition, dams with an adult body weight substantially below average should not be selected as breeders in this colony.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of selection for increased muscling on maternal productivity of a temperate beef cow herd. Cows of predominantly Angus breeding were selected using visual muscle score (1–15 scale, where 1 = lightest and 15 = heaviest muscling) into low- and high-muscled animals, and mated to Angus bulls with low or high muscularity. Initially, low-muscled cows were mated to low-muscled bulls to create the Low line, and high-muscled bulls and cows were mated to create the High line. On discovering that some High cattle carried the myostatin (821 del11) gene, a second High line was created to distinguish between cattle with no copies of the myostatin gene (High line) and those with one copy (HighHet line). Data from 12 breeding cycles, consisting of 2003 joining records, and 1713 resulting weaning records were analysed to assess maternal productivity. Cows from the three lines were similar in weight (547, 548 and 550 kg, P = 0.9), but varied in body composition – from Low to High to HighHet cows, muscling traits increased and fatness traits decreased (all P < 0.001). Compared with Low cows, High cows had a 4.4 units higher muscle score, 10% higher eye muscle area and 21% less fat, and HighHet cows had a 7.1 units higher muscle score, 17% higher eye muscle area and 45% less fat. There were no significant effects of selection for increased muscling on live birth or weaning rates, or weaning weight (all P > 0.1). Dystocia levels of Low and HighHet maidens or cows did not differ significantly, but High maidens or cows had less dystocia (P = 0.013). Low, High and HighHet cows weaned 218, 225 and 216 kg of calf/cow joined.year, indicating similar maternal productivity.

Abstract
A total of 1,243 records for 585 dairy Friesian cows from 1997–2004 were used to study the factors affecting dystocia and its effects on reproductive performance and milk production. The overall incidence of dystocia was 6.9%. The percentage of dystocia decreased with increasing live body weight, age, and parity of cows (P < 0.05); however, it increased with increasing birth weight of calves (P < 0.05). The highest percentage of dystocia was detected in winter season, but the least percentage was in summer season (P < 0.05). The percentage of incidence of dystocia was significantly (P < 0.05) higher with winter feeding compared to summer ration (8.2% vs. 5.1%). The percentage of incidence of dystocia was significantly (P < 0.05) higher with twinning than single calving (15.5% vs. 6.5%), while not significantly affected by the sex of born calves. Incidence of dystocia had adverse effects on reproductive performance and milk yield. The service interval, service period, days open, and calving interval were significantly (P < 0.05) longer in cows afflicted with dystocia compared to normal cows. The conception rate was lower (P < 0.05), but the number of service per conception was higher (P < 0.05) in cows afflicted with dystocia compared to normal cows (60.5% vs. 73.0% and 3.4 vs. 2.7, respectively). Average daily milk yield was lower (P < 0.05) by 1 kg for cows with incidence of dystocia compared to normal cows.

Abstract
Mature Angus-cross beef cows (n = 144) were used to determine effects of late gestation dietary energy source on pre- and postpartum cow performance in a complete randomized block design experiment. Cows were adapted to diets starting at 167 +/- 9 d of gestation and fed until 1 wk before expected calving date. Cows were fed 1 of 3 dietary energy sources: grass hay (HY), corn (CN), or dried distillers grains (DDGS). Cows allotted to HY were allowed ad libitum access to round-bale grass hay, and average hay disappearance was 12.4 kg/d. Limit-fed corn and DDGS diets contained 5.3 kg of whole-shelled corn or 4.1 kg of DDGS, respectively, plus 2.1 kg of hay, and 1.0 kg of supplement to meet cow nutritional needs during late gestation and to allow for an energy intake similar to HY. Every 21 d, BW, BCS, and ultrasound measurement of backfat between the 12th and 13th ribs were collected. At 210 d in gestation, jugular blood samples were collected from cows at 0, 3, 6, and 9 h postfeeding and were analyzed for glucose, insulin, NEFA, and blood urea N (BUN) concentrations. After parturition, cows were fed a common diet and managed similarly. Milk production was determined by weigh-suckle-weigh procedure on d 31, 100, and 176 postpartum. Cows fed DDGS during late gestation gained more (P = 0.04) BW than cows fed HY or CN; however, no difference in BCS change was detected (P = 0.28) among treatments. Plasma glucose concentrations were similar among treatments (P = 0.64), whereas insulin concentrations at 3 h postfeeding were greater (P = 0.002) for cows fed DDGS than those fed HY or CN. Plasma BUN concentrations were greater (P < or = 0.02) for cows fed DDGS vs. CN or HY up to 6 h postfeeding. Birth weight was greater (P < 0.001) for calves from cows fed CN and DDGS than for those fed HY, but this did not result in any differences in frequency of dystocia (P = 0.21). Prepartum energy source did not affect conception rates (P = 0.79), milk production (P > or = 0.51), or milk composition (P > or = 0.39). Maternal dietary energy source in late gestation did not affect pre- or postpartum cow performance, but did change plasma hormones and metabolites during gestation. Heavier birth weights in calves from cows fed CN or DDGS indicate the changes in maternal metabolism affected energy partitioning of nutrients to the fetus and subsequent fetal growth.

Abstract
Nutritional methods of manipulating birthweight of calves would be useful to beef cattle farmers as a tool for managing dystocia, particularly in 2-year-old heifers. This experiment examined the impact of liveweight gain during pregnancy on birthweight, liveweight to weaning, body dimensions and milk intake of the calves, as well as subsequent liveweight and maternal performance of the heifers. Treatments were high (1.22 ± 0.12 kg/day; H) or moderate (0.56 ± 0.11 kg/day; M) liveweight gain for 10 days before conception, and moderate liveweight gain (0.54 ± 0.30 kg/day; M) or liveweight loss (–0.11 ± 0.30 kg/day; L) for the first trimester (93 days) of pregnancy. HL heifers delivered calves that were lighter absolutely and relative to postpartum liveweight of the heifers than the HM, MM or ML heifers. The 8–15% reduction in birthweight could have a substantial impact on incidence of dystocia, but mechanisms for the reduction were unclear. Liveweight gain treatments had no effect on body dimensions or milk intake of the calves. MM and HM calves were heavier during the rearing period than ML calves. There was no effect of treatment on days to calving or inter-calving interval between first and second calves. Conception rate at the third joining period was not different among treatments. The liveweight gain treatments applied achieved a reduction in birthweight and generally had only minor effects on the subsequent performance of the heifers.

Abstract
The predominant cause of dystocia in 2-year-old heifers is feto–maternal disproportion, and consequently, birthweight of the calf explains much variation in dystocia. This experiment was carried out to identify other factors in addition to birthweight that contribute to the probability of dystocia. Seventy-three primiparous, 2-year-old Angus heifers were observed continuously during the calving period and record was made of the time at which various events occurred during parturition. Frequency of abdominal contractions was lower 30 min after onset of parturition than at 60–180 min after onset of parturition (P < 0.05). The longest stage of parturition was the time from the first abdominal contraction until the appearance of amnion, while the time from the appearance of the head until delivery of the calf was the shortest stage. Frequency of abdominal contractions was negatively correlated with duration of parturition. Duration of parturition was less than 135 min for 75% of the non-assisted heifers. Body dimensions of calves did not explain any additional variation in dystocia beyond that explained by birthweight and sex of calf and postpartum liveweight of the heifer. Calves that had an assisted birth took longer to attempt to stand, to stand and to suckle after birth than non-assisted calves. Within the non-assisted calves, there was no impact of duration of parturition on these behaviours of the newborn calf. In conclusion, body dimensions of the calf did not contribute to the probability of dystocia, but more frequent abdominal contractions contributed to a shorter duration of parturition. Behaviour of newborn calves was adversely affected by dystocia.

Abstract
Metabolite and immunoreactive insulin (IRI) concentrations, energy metabolism related enzymes activities and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) populations were measured in blood of pregnant Angus heifers with differing liveweight change profiles (gaining or losing), in New Zealand to investigate the meanings of those parameters in the restricted feeding beef heifers. Beef heifers losing liveweight (-412 g/day) showed significantly lower concentrations of plasma IRI, and higher concentrations of plasma free fatty acid (FFA) than heifers gaining liveweight (483 g/day). The cytosolic and mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (MDH) activities and MDH/lactate dehydrogenase (M/L) ratio in leukocytes of the liveweight losing heifers were significantly higher than those the liveweight gaining heifers. Percentages of cluster of differentiation (CD) 3 positive cells and natural killer (NK) cells in PBMC decreased significantly in the liveweight losing heifers compared to those in the liveweight gaining heifers. Plasma IRI and FFA concentrations, leukocyte cytosolic and mitochondrial MDH activities and CD3 positive and NK cell populations may be useful markers to evaluate metabolic conditions and immunity in the restricted feeding beef heifers.
