How can older peer leaders best support motivation for walking in physically inactive older adults? A self-determination theory perspective

Understanding the experiences of older adult participants and individuals involved in the delivery of a physical activity programme based on participatory approaches: A qualitative analysis

BACKGROUND

The present study aimed to understand the experiences of older adult participants and service deliverers involved in a UK-based physical activity programme, developed using participatory approaches.

METHODS

Focus groups and one-to-one interviews were conducted with 34 older adults (aged 55+ years) and 13 service providers. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted, structured using the framework approach.

FINDINGS

Four themes were identified: (1) Co-designed activities met needs and encouraged attendance; (2) engagement and access of programme activities; (3) enjoyment and perceived benefits of sessions; and (4) support needs of individuals delivering activities. Co-designed activities appeared to meet participant needs and instil a sense of ownership of the programme. Feeling able to relate to other participants seemed important and of potential relevance to attracting older adults to the programme. Peer support may help to increase confidence in attending sessions; place-based approaches (using resources in local communities) and a flexible approach to involvement also seemed to facilitate engagement. Enjoyment of the programme appeared to be enhanced through activity variety and opportunity for socializing, with a sense of community being created through the support and encouragement of fellow participants. It was considered important that volunteers had appropriate recognition and ongoing support.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that using participatory approaches may facilitate enjoyment and sustained engagement of older adults. Provision based on local community assets may contribute to sustainability of services. However, providing ongoing support is imperative, requiring further costs and resources over the longer-term.

Psychosocial factors associated with physical activity in people with dementia: A pilot cross-sectional study

Objectives

To understand how psychosocial factors associated with physical activity differ based on disease severity in people with dementia, and how these factors are associated with physical activity participation.

Methods

Eighty-seven people with dementia, alongside their family carer were asked to complete a series of questions related to physical activity participation, including barriers, motivators, and facilitators. Regression models were developed to understand how psychosocial factors were associated with physical activity participation in the cohort.

Results

In the final models, only the absence of intrapersonal barriers was associated with overall physical activity and regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Feelings of relatedness were associated with regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity only.

Conclusion

Reducing intrapersonal barriers would appear to be a potentially useful strategy to promote physical activity in people with dementia. However, a tailored approach is needed depending on the desired physical activity outcome.

Multifaceted well-being experienced by community dwelling older adults engaged in volunteering activities of frailty prevention in Japan

AIM

This study aims to elucidate what volunteering activities mean for older adults in Japan by analyzing their emotions and evaluations from hedonic (e.g., happiness), eudaimonic (e.g., self-growth), and social (e.g., social coherence) well-being.

METHODS

The qualitative research was conducted to describe the subjective experience of older adults' volunteering activities (frailty checkups) in the community-setting. Eight older adults were interviewed about their experiences during these activities. The interview data were analyzed from two assumption frameworks: first, three aspects of well-being, and second, timeframes of well-being, during the activity, medium-term, and long-term. Previous studies have not focused on the polysemy or the timeframe of well-being.

RESULTS

Our results showed that hedonic, eudaimonic, and social well-being are not independent, but overlap. Furthermore, even if older adults experience certain emotions at a point of time, they may change in the long term. This implies that it is important to analyze older adults' feelings and experiences from not only one aspect but from different perspectives and measure their feelings not just at a particular moment but in the long term. This is the first empirical study to examine qualitatively the holistic experiences of well-being among older adults who volunteer.

CONCLUSIONS

We conclude that this study is unique in that it attempted to associate empirically the experiences of older adults during volunteering with their general psychological status of well-being. These findings could help make volunteering activities more meaningful for older adults and create or promote an active community. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 273-278.

A qualitative longitudinal study of motivation in the REtirement in ACTion (REACT) physical activity intervention for older adults with mobility limitations

BACKGROUND

Physical activity (PA) is beneficial for older adults' health, however they remain the least active age group in the UK. This qualitative longitudinal study aims to understand motivations in older adults receiving the REACT physical activity intervention, through the lens of self-determination theory.

METHODS

Participants were older adults randomised to the intervention arm of the Retirement in ACTion (REACT) Study, a group-based physical activity and behaviour maintenance intervention to prevent decline of physical functioning in older adults (≥ 65 years). Stratified purposive sampling by physical functioning (Short Physical Performance Battery scores) and 3-month attendance was employed. Fifty-one semi-structured interviews were conducted at 6, 12 and 24-months with twenty-nine older adults (Mean age (baseline) = 77.9 years, SD 6.86, 69% female) and at 24-months with twelve session leaders and two service managers. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Framework Analysis.

RESULTS

Perceptions of autonomy, competence and relatedness were associated with adherence to the REACT programme and maintenance of an active lifestyle. Motivational processes and participants' support needs, changed during the 12-month REACT intervention and across the 12-months post-intervention. Group interactions were an important source of motivation during the first six months but increased competence and mobility drove motivation at the later stages (12 months) and post-intervention (24 months).

CONCLUSIONS

Motivational support needs vary in different stages of a 12-month group-based programme (adoption and adherence) and post-intervention (long-term maintenance). Strategies to accommodate those needs include, (a) making exercise social and enjoyable, (b) understanding participants' capabilities and tailoring the programme accordingly, (c) capitalising on group support to motivate participants to try other activities and prepare sustainable active living plans.

Do walking and social support always relate to autonomic nervous system function in later life? Reexamining an age-based moderating model

Although walking and social support relate to healthy function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in later life, it is unclear whether age groups moderate the relationships of walking frequency and social support with ANS function. To address this area of limited research, we conducted a cross-sectional study with 300 older adults to examine these moderating relationships. Results of multiple regression analysis indicated that walking frequency and social support correlated positively with ANS function. The correlation between walking frequency and ANS function was moderated by age groups, but that between social support and ANS function was not. Therefore, increasing frequency of walking and levels of social support should be considered critical elements of healthy ANS function in later life. However, increasing frequency of walking may be ineffective for old-old adults. We recommend that healthcare practitioners guide old-old adults in seeking sources of social support to promote ANS function.
