Abstract
In the petroleum sector, the generation of oily sludge is an unavoidable byproduct, necessitating the development of efficient treatment strategies for both economic gain and the mitigation of negative environmental impacts. The intricate composition of oily sludge poses a formidable challenge, as existing treatment methodologies frequently fall short of achieving baseline disposal criteria. The processes of demulsification and dehydration are integral to diminishing the oil content and reclaiming valuable crude oil, thereby playing a critical role in the management of oily sludge. Among the myriad of treatment solutions, ultrasonic technology has emerged as a particularly effective physical method, celebrated for its diverse applications and lack of resultant secondary pollution. This comprehensive review delves into the underlying mechanisms and recent progress in the ultrasonic treatment of oily sludge, with a specific focus on its industrial implementations within China. Both isolated ultrasonic treatment and its combination with other technological approaches have proven successful in addressing oily sludge challenges. The adoption of industrial-scale systems that amalgamate ultrasound with multi-technological processes has shown marked enhancements in treatment efficacy. The fusion of ultrasonic technology with other cutting-edge methods holds considerable potential across a spectrum of applications. To fulfill the goals of resource recovery, reduction, and neutralization in oily sludge management, the industrial adoption and adept application of a variety of treatment technologies are imperative.

Abstract
In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the bioactivity of rutin, a dietary flavonol naturally found in several plant species. Despite widespread knowledge of its numerous health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective and cardiovascular effects, industrial use of rutin is still limited due to its low solubility in aqueous media, the characteristic bitter and astringent taste of phenolic compounds and its susceptibility to degradation during processing. To expand its applications and preserve its biological activity, novel encapsulation systems have been developed. This review presents updated research on the extraction sources and methodologies of rutin from fruit and vegetable products commonly found in a regular diet and grown using family farming approaches. Additionally, this review covers quantitative analysis techniques, encapsulation methods utilizing nanoparticles, colloidal and heterodisperse systems, as well as industrial applications of rutin.

Abstract
This research aims to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic processing parameters (power and sonication time), emulsion characteristics (water salinity and pH) and their interaction on oil-in-water emulsion stability for Cold Lake Blend (CLB) crude oil. Response surface methodology was used to design experimental runs, in which the parameters were investigated at five levels. Emulsion stability was evaluated by measuring creaming index, emulsion turbidity and microscopic image analysis. The effect of crude oil condition (fresh and weathered) on the emulsion stability was also investigated at the optimum sonication parameters and emulsion characteristics. The optimum condition was found at a power level of 76-80 W, sonication time of 16 mins, water salinity of 15 g/L NaCl, and pH of 8.3. Increasing sonication time beyond the optimum value had adverse effect on the emulsion stability. High water salinity (> 20 g/L NaCl) and pH (> 9) decreased the emulsion stability. These adverse effects intensified at higher power levels (> 80-87 W) and longer sonication times (> 16 mins). Interaction of parameters showed that the required energy to generate stable emulsion was within 60 - 70 kJ. Emulsion with fresh crude oil was more stable than those generated with the weathered oil.

Trend in Research on Characterization, Environmental Impacts and Treatment of Oily Sludge: A Systematic Review. MOLECULES (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 27:molecules27227795. [PMID: 36431896 PMCID: PMC9695482 DOI: 10.3390/molecules27227795] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/23/2022] [Revised: 11/08/2022] [Accepted: 11/09/2022] [Indexed: 11/16/2022]
Abstract
Oily sludge is a hazardous material generated from the petroleum industry that has attracted increasing research interest. Although several review articles have dealt with specific subtopics focusing on the treatment of oily sludge based on selected references, no attempt has been made to demonstrate the research trend of oily sludge comprehensively and quantitatively. This study conducted a systematic review to analyze and evaluate all oily sludge-related journal articles retrieved from the Web of Science database. The results show that an increase in oily sludge-related research did not take place until recent years and the distribution of the researchers is geographically out of balance. Most oily sludge-related articles focused on treatment for harmfulness reduction or valorization with limited coverage of formation, characterization, and environmental impact assessment of oily sludge. Pyrolytic treatment has attracted increasing research attention in recent years. So far, the research findings have been largely based on laboratory-scale experiments with insufficient consideration of the cost-effectiveness of the proposed treatment methods. Although many methods have been proposed, few alone could satisfactorily achieve cost-effective treatment goals. To enable sustainable management of oily sludge on a global scale, efforts need to be made to fund more research projects, especially in the major oil-producing countries. Pilot-scale experiments using readily available and affordable materials should be encouraged for practical purposes. This will allow a sensible cost-benefit analysis of a proposed method/procedure for oily sludge treatment. To improve the treatment performance, combined methods are more desirable. To inform the smart selection of methods for the treatment of different oily sludge types, it is suggested to develop universally accepted evaluation systems for characterization and environmental risk of oily sludge.

Abstract
In this work, a new type of micromesoporous substance was prepared with fatty alcohol-polyoxyethylene ether (AEO) surfactant freezing penetration and pyrolysis using shells as raw materials. The obtained material exhibited good adsorbability and could be added to oil-contaminated soil to adsorb the pollutant, which resulted in the regeneration of the initially polluted soil. It was determined that the main component of the developed substance was CaCO3. Importantly, the conducted experiments revealed that the obtained mussel micromesoporous material displayed certain adsorption effects toward petroleum hydrocarbons in a diesel solution. Moreover, it was found that chemical adsorption was more optimal than physical adsorption. The soil remediation effect was the best when the content of the mussel micromesoporous material in the soil was 400 g/kg. Under these conditions, the removal rate of petroleum hydrocarbon was established at 49.38%. This study indicated that micromesoporous material has great potential in the application of oil contaminated soil remediation.

Demulsification Treatment of Spent Metalworking Fluids by Metal Cations: The Synergistic Effect and Efficiency Evaluation. Processes (Basel) 2021. [DOI: 10.3390/pr9101807] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/01/2023] Open
Abstract
In this paper, various metal ions were utilized for the demulsification of spent metalworking fluids discharged from an automobile parts workshop. Five types of metal ions, i.e., Fe3+, Al3+, Fe2+, Ca2+ and Mg2+, combined with coagulant were systematically evaluated, and the synergistic effect as well as the optimum operating conditions were studied. The results indicated that the Ca2+ as well Mg2+ possessed hardly efficiency for the demulsification, on the contrary, Fe2+ reduced the yield of the by-product sludge and lowered the SV30 ratio, and Al3+ boosted the CODCr removal. Furthermore, Fe3+ and Al3+ had a significant synergistic effect to achieve a better transmittance and a higher CODCr/SV30 ratio which revealed that more CODCr was removed, as well as less by-product sludge was generated. For a better demulsification of spent metalworking fluids, the optimum operating conditions were gathered as follows: the dosage of metal ions was 0.08 mol/L with Al3+:Fe3+ ratio was 1.5:1, the reaction pH was 6.00, the reaction time was 18.00 min and the temperature was 323.00 K. Based on this, the CODCr removal, the SV30 ratio and the transmittance and CODCr/SV30 ratio of the spent metalworking fluids were 80.21%, 40.00%, 95.20% and 128.33 mg/mL, respectively. This combined metal ion demulsification method possessed an advantageous minimization of spent metalworking fluids, which greatly benefited the automobile parts workshops in cutting down the operating cost in environmental protection.

Abstract
Difficult separation of oil-solid phase and high fine content of the recovered oil were two problems in the treatment of oily sludge from the tank bottom by the hot water-based extraction process. To solve the problems, one technology with "ball milling + ozone-catalyzed oxidation" as the core was studied, and the process parameters of ball milling and ozone-catalyzed oxidation were respectively optimized. After ball milling treatment, the oil content of dry oily sludge decreased from 33.9 to 10.2%. Then, an ozone catalytic oxidation treatment technology with aluminum ore as the catalyst was developed to further treat this stubborn oily sludge. Under the optimal conditions, the oil content of oily sludge could be further reduced to 0.28%, which met the treatment and disposal requirements stipulated in GB4284-2018. For further research on the contribution of the catalyst to the ozone catalytic oxidation system, the reaction activation energy and reaction rates of ozone oxidation and ozone catalytic oxidation were compared from the perspective of kinetics. The results showed that, with the catalyst addition, the reaction rate constants increased about three times and the reaction activation energy reduced 82.26%, which showed the effectiveness of the catalyst on the kinetics quantitatively. The combined process with "ball milling + ozone-catalyzed oxidation" as the core can solve the two problems in the treatment of oily sludge from the tank bottom by hot water-based extraction and provides a reference for the harmless and resourceful treatment of oily sludge from the tank bottom.

Abstract
The paper represents the research results for the process of crude oil-contaminated soil neutralization with the use of a neutralizer obtained on the basis ofhumic substances. Using physical methods (gas and liquid chromatography, fluorimetry, atomic absorption spectrometry, IR spectrometry), the element and group compositionswere determined for the crude oil-contaminated soil, neutralizer, and neutralized soil. Optimal parameters were determined for the process of the crude oil-contaminated soil neutralization under laboratory conditions:weight ratios of the crude oil-contaminated soil, neutralizer and water, and the temperature and neutralization process duration. The technological scheme was developed for the neutralization of the crude oil-contaminated soil in field conditions. It was found that low-boiling point hydrocarbon fractions (C12–C17) disappear completely at neutralization, the content of high-boiling point hydrocarbon fractions (C20–C23) is essentially increased, and the content of oil components and metals, including the toxic ones, is decreased. The engineering characteristics for nine mixtures of the stabilized soil, containing the neutralized soil, were evaluated under laboratory conditions and the conditions were determined for their use in road construction (with regard to road category, characteristic pavement layer, minimal air temperature). An experimental road section was constructed with the use of the stabilized soil with neutralized soil (40%).

Abstract
Steady efforts in using ultrasonic energy to treat oil-contaminated sand started in the early 2000s until today, although pilot studies on the area can be traced to even earlier dates. Owing to the unique characteristics of the acoustic means, the separation of oil from sand has been showing good results in laboratories. This review provides the compilation of researches and insights into the mechanism of separation thus far. Related topics in the areas of oil-contaminated sand characterizations, fundamental ultrasonic cleaning, and cavitation effects are also addressed. Nevertheless, many of the documented works are only at laboratory or pilot-scale level, and the comprehensive interaction between ultrasonic parameters towards cleaning efficiencies may not have been fully unveiled. Gaps and opportunities are also presented at the end of this article.

Abstract
The migration behaviors of oil, water and solids in sludge during centrifugation were elaborated. Size distribution, surface topography and lypohydrophilic properties were studied in detail. The average size of solids was 61 μm in original sludge, 31 μm in upper layer and 235 μm in bottom layer. The result shows that solvent is essential to separate oil phase into molecular light and weight fractions during centrifugation. With solvent/oil ratio increases from 1:2, 1:1, 2:1 to 5:1, molecular weight in upper layer decreases from 1044, 1043, 1020 to 846 combined with that in bottom layer increases. A model was proposed to calculate the oil residue content in solid phases after sedimentation. The findings of this paper provide information for optimizing the oil recovery and clean treatment.

Abstract
The effect of ultrasonic assisted extraction (UAE) process on oil recovery from refinery oily sludge was examined in this study. Two types of UAE treatment including UAE probe (UAEP) system and UAE bath (UAEB) system were investigated. Their oil recovery efficiencies were compared to that of mechanical shaking extraction (MSE). Three solvents including cyclohexane (CHX), ethyl acetate (EA), and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) were examined as the extraction solvents. The influence of experimental factors on oil and solvent recovery was investigated using an orthogonal experimental design. Results indicated that solvent type, solvent-to-sludge (S/S) ratio, and treatment duration could have significant effects on oil recovery in UAE treatment. Under the optimum conditions, UAEP treatment can obtain an oil recovery of 68.8% within 20 s, which was higher than that (i.e., 62.0%) by MSE treatment after 60 min' extraction. UAEB treatment can also obtain a promising oil recovery within shorter extraction duration (i.e., 15 min) than MSE. UAE was thus illustrated as an effective and improved approach for oily sludge recycling.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Oil spills result in negative impacts on the environment, economy and society. Due to tidal and waves actions, the oil spillage affects the shorelines by adhering to the soil, making it difficult for immediate cleaning of the soil. As shoreline clean-up is the most costly component of a response operation, there is a need for effective oil remediation technologies. This paper provides a review on the remediation technologies for soil contaminated with various types of oil, including diesel, crude oil, petroleum, lubricating oil, bitumen and bunker oil. The methods discussed include solvent extraction, bioremediation, phytoremediation, chemical oxidation, electrokinetic remediation, thermal technologies, ultrasonication, flotation and integrated remediation technologies. Each of these technologies was discussed, and associated with their advantages, disadvantages, advancements and future work in detail. Nonetheless, it is important to note that no single remediation technology is considered the best solution for the remediation of oil contaminated soil. CAPSULE This review provides a comprehensive literature on the various remediation technologies studied in the removal of different oil types from soil.
