Abstract
Introduction Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), have a structure resembling a cage in which the corners are silicon atoms bound with oxygen bridges. POSS cages may be dissolved in a polymer matrix or used as a cross-linker. When added into a polymer matrix, they remain non-toxic, improve mechanical properties, and resist biodegradation, which is important in tissue engineering. Limited studies evaluate long-term tissue responses to POSS gels. Methods Adult male Sprague Dawley rat were used as a model to determine the tissue response towards multiple dosing of POSS gel compared to air injections for up to 180 days. A total of twenty-four rats was used for the study (Six rats were injected with the fluorescently labeled UVPOSS:POSS for imaging and eighteen additional rats were injected either with POSS SO1455 or air as a control group). Each group received three injections, and tissues were harvested 7, 14, and 21 days for early tissue responses, and 90- and 180-days post injection for late tissue reactions. Results POSS vesicles formed after injection and remained pliable over 180 days. POSS complexed with Perylene dye could be imaged over 4 weeks showing lack of systemic mobility. Over the course of 180 days, POSS triggered a foreign body response with low- grade inflammation. The high viscosity nature of POSS resulted in the formation of a dense capsule preventing the material migration. Conclusion: POSS is encapsulated with connective tissue without long-term inflammatory cells or granuloma cell formation for 180 days in rats.

Abstract
Macromolecule branching upon polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) via "click" chemistry has previously been reported for promoting natural biological responses in vitro, particularly when regarding their demonstrated biocompatibility and structural robustness as potential macromolecule anchoring points. However, "clicking" of large molecules around POSS structures uncovers two main challenges: (1) a synthetic challenge encompassing multi-covalent attachment of macromolecules to a single nanoscale-central position, and (2) purification and separation of fully adorned nanocages from those that are incomplete due to their similar physical characteristics. Here we present peptide decoration to a T8POSS nanocage through the attachment of azido-modified trimers. Triglycine- and trialanine-methyl esters "clicked" to 97% and 92% completion, respectively, resulting in 84% and 68% yields of the fully-adorned octamers. The "clicks" halt within 27-h of the reaction time, and efforts to further increase the octamer yield were of negligible benefit. Exploration of reaction conditions reveals multiple factors preventing full octa-arm modification to all available POSS nanocages, and offers insights into macromolecule attachment between both peptides and small inorganic-organic structures, all of which require consideration for future work of this nature.

Abstract
Functional silanes are multifaceted cross-linkers, compatibilizers, coupling agents, and surface modifiers. Herein, we present organofunctional polysiloxane building blocks that offer great versatility in terms of molecular weight, degree of condensation, and the choice and loading of organic substituent groups. The organofunctional polyethoxysilanes (funPEOS) are prepared in a one-pot, two-step process: synthesis of the PEOS carrier/substrate, followed by grafting a functional silane "shell", both based on condensation with acetic anhydride. The reaction was optimized at the lab scale and scaled up to a 7 L reactor. The acetylation, condensation, and hyperbranched structure of the carrier were confirmed by 29Si NMR, while 29Si-29Si 2D INADEQUATE NMR provides strong evidence for the grafting of functional silanes onto the carrier (Q-T coupling). IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy demonstrate that the functional groups remain intact. The molar mass can be tailored by stoichiometric control of the acetic anhydride to silane monomer ratio (M n 3500-20,000 g/mol). The compounds are stable organic liquids with a long shelf life. Selected applications are presented: scratch-resistant coatings with water contact angles of ∼90°, stable water emulsions, and surfactant-free, mesoporous silica foams.

Conjugation through Si-O-Si bonds, silsesquioxane (SQ) half cage copolymers, extended examples via SiO 0.5/SiO 1.5 units: multiple emissive states in violation of Kasha's rule. Abstract
We previously reported that phenyl- and vinyl-silsesquioxanes (SQs), [RSiO1.5]8,10,12 (R = Ph or vinyl) functionalized with three or more conjugated moieties show red-shifted absorption- and emission features suggesting 3-D conjugation via a cage centered LUMOs. Corner missing [PhSiO1.5]7(OSiMe3)3 and edge opened, end capped [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMe2)2 (double decker, DD) analogs also offer red shifted spectra again indicating 3-D conjugation and a cage centered LUMO. Copolymerization of DD [PhSiO1.5]8(OSiMevinyl)2 with multiple R-Ar-Br gives copolymers with emission red-shifts that change with degree of polymerization (DP), exhibit charge transfer to F4TNCQ and terpolymer averaged red-shifts suggesting through chain conjugation even with two (O-Si-O) end caps possibly via a cage centered LUMO. Surprisingly, ladder (LL) SQ, (vinylMeSiO2)[PhSiO1.5]4(O2SiMevinyl) copolymers offer emission red-shifts even greater for analogous copolymers requiring a different explanation. Here we assess the photophysical behavior of copolymers of a more extreme SQ form: the half cage [PhSiO1.5]4(OSiMe2Vinyl)4, Vy4HC SQs. We again see small red-shifted absorptions coupled with significant red-shifted emissions, even with just a half cage, thus further supporting the existence of pπ-dπ and/or σ*-π* conjugation through Si-O-Si bonds and contrary to most traditional views of Si-O-Si linked polymers. These same copolymers donate an electron to F4TCNQ generating the radical anion, F4TCNQ-. as further proof of conjugation. Column chromatographic separation of short from longer chain oligomers reveals a direct correlation between DP and emission λmax red-shifts as another indication of conjugation. Further, one- and two-photon absorption and emission spectroscopy reveals multiple excited fluorescence-emitting states in a violation of Kasha's rule wherein emission occurs only from the lowest excited state. Traditional modeling studies again find HOMO LUMO energy levels residing only on the aromatic co-monomers rather than through Si-O-Si bonds as recently found in related polymers.

Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation methods for polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) monomers and polymer/POSS nanocomposites. It focuses on the latest advancements in using POSS to design polymer nanocomposites with reduced dielectric constants. The study emphasizes exploring the potential of POSS, either alone or in combination with other materials, to decrease the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of various polymers, including polyimides, bismaleimide resins, poly(aryl ether)s, polybenzoxazines, benzocyclobutene resins, polyolefins, cyanate ester resins, and epoxy resins. In addition, the research investigates the impact of incorporating POSS on improving the thermal properties, mechanical properties, surface properties, and other aspects of these polymers. The entire study is divided into two parts, discussing systematically the role of POSS in reducing dielectric constants during the preparation of POSS composites using both physical blending and chemical synthesis methods. The goal of this research is to provide valuable strategies for designing a new generation of low dielectric constant materials suitable for large-scale integrated circuits in the semiconductor materials domain.

Abstract
Soluble polysilsesquioxane containing side-chain phthalimide groups (PSQ-PhI) was synthesized via a solvent- and catalyst-free hydrolytic polycondensation reaction using 2-[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione. The composition and structure of polysilsesquioxane was confirmed via 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction analysis, and elemental analysis. The synthesized silsesquioxane showed a monomodal molecular weight distribution. The average molecular weight of polysilsesquioxane is 11,200 Da, and the polydispersity index is 1.10. 29Si NMR analysis showed a half-peak width w1/2 3.1 ppm at δ -68.3, which corresponds to the PhI(CH2)3SiO3/2 unit and indicates an ordered structure in the polymer, with some defects caused by the presence of uncondensed silanol groups. PSQ-PhI showed good thermal stability (Td5% decomposition at 345 °C). The polysilsesquioxane-based coating was transparent in the visible region.

Abstract
Improvements in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERM)-type technologies have allowed the development of specific materials that, together with a better understanding of bone tissue structure, have provided new pathways to obtain biomaterials for bone tissue regeneration. In this manuscript, bioabsorbable materials are presented as emerging materials in tissue engineering therapies related to bone lesions because of their ability to degrade in physiological environments while the regeneration process is completed. This comprehensive review aims to explore the studies, published since its inception (2010s) to the present, on bioabsorbable composite materials based on PLA and PCL polymeric matrix reinforced with Mg, which is also bioabsorbable and has recognized osteoinductive capacity. The research collected in the literature reveals studies based on different manufacturing and dispersion processes of the reinforcement as well as the physicochemical analysis and corresponding biological evaluation to know the osteoinductive capacity of the proposed PLA/Mg and PCL/Mg composites. In short, this review shows the potential of these composite materials and serves as a guide for those interested in bioabsorbable materials applied in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
In this paper, we successfully fabricated color conversion layers (CCLs) for full-color-mico-LED display using a perovskite quantum dot (PQD)/siloxane composite by ligand exchanged PQD with silane composite followed by surface activation by an addition of halide-anion containing salt. Due to this surface activation, it was possible to construct the PQD surface with a silane ligand using a non-polar organic solvent that does not damage the PQD. As a result, the ligand-exchanged PQD with a silane compound exhibited high dispersibility in the siloxane matrix and excellent atmospheric stability due to sol-gel condensation. Based on highly ambient stable PQD/siloxane composite based CCLs, full-color micro-LED display has a 1 mm pixel pitch, about 25.4 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution was achieved. In addition, due to the thin thickness of the black matrix to prevent blue light interference, the possibility of a flexible display that can be operated without damage even with a bending radius of 5 mm was demonstrated.

Abstract
The search for new materials with improved properties for advanced applications is, nowadays, one of the most relevant and booming fields for scientists due to the environmental and technological needs of our society. Within this demand, hybrid siliceous materials, made out of organic and inorganic species (ORMOSILs), have emerged as an alternative with endless chemical and textural possibilities by incorporating in their structure the properties of inorganic compounds (i.e., mechanical, thermal, and structural stability) in synergy with those of organic compounds (functionality and flexibility), and thus, bestowing the material with unique properties, which allow access to multiple applications. In this work, synthesis using the sol-gel method of a series of new hybrid materials prepared by the co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 4-chlorophenyltriethoxysilane (ClPhTEOS) in different molar ratios is described. The aim of the study is not only the preparation of new materials but also their characterization by means of different techniques (FT-IR, 29Si NMR, X-ray Diffraction, and N2/CO2 adsorption, among others) to obtain information on their chemical behavior and porous structure. Understanding how the chemical and textural properties of these materials are modulated with respect to the molar percentage of organic precursor will help to envisage their possible applications: From the most conventional such as catalysis, adsorption, or separation, to the most advanced in nanotechnology such as microelectronics, photoluminescence, non-linear optics, or sensorics.

Abstract
In order to use polymers at low Earth orbit (LEO) environment, they must be protected against atomic oxygen (AO) erosion. A promising protection strategy is to incorporate polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules into the polymer backbone. In this study, the space durability of epoxy-POSS (EPOSS) nanocomposites was investigated. Two types of POSS molecules were incorporated separately—amine-based and epoxy-based. The outgassing properties of the EPOSS, in terms of total mass loss, collected volatile condensable material, and water vapor regain were measured as a function of POSS type and content. The AO durability was studied using a ground-based AO simulation system. Surface compositions of EPOSS were studied using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that with respect to the outgassing properties, only some of the EPOSS compositions were suitable for the ultrahigh vacuum space environment, and that the POSS type and content had a strong effect on their outgassing properties. Regardless of the POSS type being used, the AO durability improved significantly. This improvement is attributed to the formation of a self-passivated AO durable SiO2 layer, and demonstrates the potential use of EPOSS as a qualified nanocomposite for space applications.

Abstract
Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersions were prepared by post-chain extension and crosslinking reactions using 2-[(2-aminoethyl)-amino]ethyl sulfonic acid sodium (AAS), diethylenetriamine (DETA), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and AAS/DETA as post-chain extenders, and their influence on the properties of WPUs was studied. Results showed the introduction of trifunctional DETA chain extenders significantly improved the molecular weight, T-peel strength, and water resistance of WPUs, suggesting that DETA was an effective crosslinking agent. The WPU dispersions with a 2 : 3 molar ratio of AAS/DETA chain extenders exhibited excellent properties. At a molar ratio of 1.6 for NCO groups to OH groups, a stable WPU dispersion possessed higher solid content of 42.8%. Furthermore, only 4 wt% organic solvents were used in the preparation of WPU dispersions. Results revealed that the obtained WPU dispersions are a potential candidate for binders in water-based inks, without removing organic solvents. This study may provide some insight or guidance for the design and preparation of water-based ink binders. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dispersions were prepared by post-chain extension and crosslinking reactions using different functional chain extenders. The influences of chain extenders type on the properties of WPUs were investigated.![]()

Abstract
Advanced organic-inorganic materials-composites, nanocomposites, and hybrids with various compositions offer unique properties required for biomedical applications. One of the most promising inorganic (nano)additives are polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS); their biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and phase separation ability that modifies the material porosity are fundamental properties required in modern biomedical applications. When incorporated, chemically or physically, into polyurethane matrices, they substantially change polymer properties, including mechanical properties, surface characteristics, and bioactivity. Hence, this review is dedicated to POSS-PU composites that have recently been developed for applications in the biomedical field. First, different modes of POSS incorporation into PU structure have been presented, then recent developments of PU/POSS hybrids as bio-active composites for scaffolds, cardiovascular stents, valves, and membranes, as well as in bio-imaging and cancer treatment, have been described. Finally, characterization and methods of modification routes of polyurethane-based materials with silsesquioxanes were presented.

Abstract
We report carbene insertion into Si-H bonds of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) for the synthesis of highly functionalized siloxane nanomaterials. Dirhodium(II) carboxylates catalyze insertion of aryl-diazoacetates as carbene precursors to afford POSS structures containing both ester and aryl groups as orthogonal functional handles for further derivatization of POSS materials. Four diverse and structurally varied silsesquioxane core scaffolds with one, three, or eight Si-H bonds were evaluated with diazo reactants to produce a total of 20 new POSS compounds. Novel diazo compounds containing a fluorinated octyl group and boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophore demonstrate the use of highly functionalized substrates. Transformations of aryl(ester)-functionalized POSS compounds derived from this method are demonstrated, including ester hydrolysis and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling.

Abstract
Cyanoacrylate glues are a renowned synthetic tissue sealant that cures rapidly through polymerization at room temperature, felicitating medical glues to treat skin wounds and surgical openings. Despite a wide range of cyanoacrylates available, only 2-octyl cyanoacrylates (OCA) provides the best biocompatibility. In this study, the polymerization and adhesive properties of 2-octyl cyanoacrylates (OCA) are explored in the presence of a highly biocompatible and biochemically inert polymer, poly(ethylene glycol) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PEG-POSS). The effect of PEG-POSS on the polymerization of OCA is examined on a plastic surface and over pig skin. A peel-test is performed to evaluate the strength of OCA adhesive properties between two pieces of pig skin samples. Additionally, thin films of OCA are prepared using different fillers and evaluated for tear test. The results reveal that when applied on the plastic or pig skin, PEG-POSS initiated polymerization in OCA yields a high molecular weight OCA polymer with much better adhesive properties compared to commercially available cyanoacrylate adhesives. The relative change in the molecular weights of OCA compared to commercially available cyanoacrylate bioadhesives such as Dermaflex is much higher. The pig skin peeling test shows that OCA needs higher peeling force than Dermaflex.

Abstract
We have analyzed the chemical bonding and reactivity in the cubic molecule octahydridosilsesquioxane, Si8H8O12, and its counterpart Ge8H8O12 by means of ab initio quantum chemical methods and group theory. Density functional theory and MP2 methods combined with the basis sets 6-311+G(d) and 6-311++G(2d,p) were used for geometry optimization and vibrational frequency analysis. The geometries of Si8H8O12 and Ge8H8O12 are unstable under Oh symmetry and distort to the rare Th molecular symmetry. The energy gained from this pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortion ranges from 0.78 to 6.14 kcal mol-1 depending on methodological treatment. The Fukui functions and the molecular electrostatic potential were both used as DFT-based reactivity descriptors. Our study shows that Si8H8O12 and Ge8H8O12 are both hard amphoteric molecules. The cavity within each cage is acidic and able to encapsulate hard small bases such as F-. The exterior of the cages is basic and can form stable exohedral complexes with hard acids, as in the case of H+. The insertion of F- in Si8H8O12 and Ge8H8O12 cages gives the most stable endohedral complexes of the series studied, characterized by formation energies of -3.50 and -3.45 eV at CAM-B3LYP/6-311+G(d) and -3.61 and -3.68 eV at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level, respectively. The calculated formation energies of the exohedral and endohedral complexes align with the DFT reactivity descriptor analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is a monomer with silicon structure and an internal nanometric cage. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to provide an injectable hydrogel that could be easily located in open or closed bone fractures and injuries, and also to reduce the possible risks of infections caused by bone graft either as an allograft or an autograft. METHODS Various formulations of temperature sensitive hydrogels containing hydroxyapatite, Gelrite, POSS and platelets rich plasma (PRP), such as the co-gelling agent and cell growth enhancer, were prepared. The hydrogels were characterized for their injectability, gelation time, phase transition temperature and viscosity. Other physical properties of the optimized formulation including compressive stress, compressive strain and Young's modulus as mechanical properties, as well as storage and loss modulus, swelling ratio, biodegradation behavior and cell toxicity as rheometrical parameters were studied on human osteoblast MG-63 cells. Alizarin red tests were conducted to study the qualitative and quantitative osteogenic capability of the designed scaffold, and the cell adhesion to the scaffold was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS The results demonstrated that the hydrogel scaffold mechanical force and injectability were 3.34±0.44 Mpa and 12.57 N, respectively. Moreover, the scaffold showed higher calcium granules production in alizarin red staining compared to the control group. The proliferation of the cells in G4.5H1P0.03PRP10 formulation was significantly higher than in other formulations (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The optimized Gelrite/Hydroxyapatite/POSS/PRP hydrogel scaffold has useful impacts on osteoblasts activity, and may be beneficial for local drug delivery in complications including a break or bone loss.

Abstract
One of the critical aspects in the design of nanocomposite membrane is the selection of a well-matched pair of nanomaterials and a polymer matrix that suits their intended application. By making use of the fascinating flexibility of nanoscale materials, the functionalities of the resultant nanocomposite membranes can be tailored. The unique features demonstrated by nanomaterials are closely related to their dimensions, hence a greater attention is deserved for this critical aspect. Recognizing the impressive research efforts devoted to fine-tuning the nanocomposite membranes for a broad range of applications including gas and liquid separation, this review intends to discuss the selection criteria of nanostructured materials from the perspective of their dimensions for the production of high-performing nanocomposite membranes. Based on their dimension classifications, an overview of the characteristics of nanomaterials used for the development of nanocomposite membranes is presented. The advantages and roles of these nanomaterials in advancing the performance of the resultant nanocomposite membranes for gas and liquid separation are reviewed. By highlighting the importance of dimensions of nanomaterials that account for their intriguing structural and physical properties, the potential of these nanomaterials in the development of nanocomposite membranes can be fully harnessed.

Abstract
Thermally activated shape memory polymers (SMPs) can memorize a temporary shape at low temperature and return to their permanent shape at higher temperature. These materials can be used for light and compact space deployment mechanisms. The control of transition temperature and thermomechanical properties of epoxy-based SMPs can be done using functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additives, which are also known to improve the durability to atomic oxygen in the space environment. In this study, the influence of varying amounts of two types of POSS added to epoxy-based SMPs on the shape memory effect (SME) were studied. The first type contained amine groups, whereas the second type contained epoxide groups. The curing conditions were defined using differential scanning calorimetry and glass transition temperature (Tg) measurements. Thermomechanical and SME properties were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that SMPs containing amine-based POSS show higher Tg, better shape fixity and faster recovery speed, while SMPs containing epoxide-based POSS have higher crosslinking density and show superior thermomechanical properties above Tg. This work demonstrates how the Tg and SME of SMPs can be controlled by the type and amount of POSS in an epoxy-based SMP nanocomposite for future space applications.

Abstract
Lappaconitine (LA), a potent analgesic drug extracted from the root of natural aconitum species, has been clinically used for years because of its effectiveness and non-addictive properties. However, it is mainly limited in oral and intravenous administration in the form of Lappaconitine Hydrobromide (LAH). In this work, Lappaconitine trifluoroacetate (LAF), a new derivative of LA, was successfully obtained by introducing organofluorine group to LA. This new compound had a lower toxicity (LD50 of 21.14 mg·kg-1), improved analgesic effect and longer half-life (T1/2 of 2.24 h) when compared with LAH. Moreover, in vitro transdermal permeation (Jss of 206.82 μg·cm-2·h-1) of LAF was 30.54% higher than that of LAH, means that LAF can be conveniently used for transdermal drug delivery (TDD). Therefore, drug membranes with PVA solution (10 wt%) containing LAF in various amounts were fabricated by electrospinning. The in vitro release tests confirmed that up to 81.43% of LAF in the PVA/LAF nanofibrous membranes could be released in 72 h, accompanied by significant analgesic effect when compared with the blank control group. In conclusion, the prepared LAF-loaded membrane is a novel formulation for the treatment of chronic and long-term pain.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the influence of methacryl-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MA-POSS) nanoparticles as a plasticizer and thermal stabilizer for a poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) homopolymer and for a poly(vinyl chloride)/dissononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (PVC/DINCH) binary blend system. The PVC and the PVC/DINCH blend both became flexible, with decreases in their glass transition temperatures and increases in their thermal decomposition temperatures, upon an increase in MA-POSS content, the result of hydrogen bonding between the C=O groups of MA-POSS and the H-CCl units of the PVC, as determined using infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the first thermal decomposition temperature of the pure PVC, due to the emission of HCl, increased from 290 to 306 °C, that is, the MA-POSS nanoparticles had a retarding effect on the decomposition of the PVC matrix. In tensile tests, all the PVC/DINCH/MA-POSS ternary blends were transparent and displayed flexibility, but their modulus and tensile strength both decreased, while their elongation properties increased, upon an increase in MA-POSS concentration, both before and after thermal annealing. In contrast, the elongation decreased, but the modulus and tensile strength increased, after thermal annealing at 100 °C for 7 days.
