Development of a comprehensive dietary antioxidant index and application to lung cancer risk in a cohort of male smokers

Dietary antioxidants and hypertension among menopausal women in Rafsanjan Cohort Study

Studies on the beneficial role of dietary antioxidants in preventing or managing hypertension in postmenopausal women are infrequent. The present cross-sectional study aimed to assess the association between dietary antioxidants and hypertension among menopausal women in Rafsanjan, a city located in the southeast of Iran. This study was based on data from the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS), as part of the Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN (PERSIAN). Among 2359 postmenopausal women, finally, 1936 women were included in this study. Participants were grouped as having normal blood pressure (BP), elevated BP, stage 1 hypertension, or stage 2 hypertension as defined by the 2017 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) BP guideline. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), was utilized to ascertain the levels of various nutrients and dietary antioxidants in the diet. The association between dietary intakes of antioxidants and blood pressure groups was evaluated by crude and adjusted models in the multinominal logistics regression analysis. Normal BP, elevated BP, stage 1 hypertension, and stage 2 hypertension were observed in 35.69%, 3.62%, 10.59%, and 50.10% of postmenopausal women respectively. In the adjusted model, in subjects with higher consumption of β-carotene, the odds ratios of elevated BP in the 3rd quartile was about 2 times (OR: 2.04 (1.06-3.93) higher than 1st quartile. Also, in subjects with medium quality of DAQS, the odds ratios of elevated BP and stage 1 blood pressure were about 2 times (OR: 2.09 (1.05-4.17) and 1.69 times (OR: 1.69 (1.09-2.63) higher than subjects with low quality respectively. Furthermore, we did not find any statistically significant association between increased intake of dietary antioxidants and decreased odds of hypertension. After controlling the effects of confounding variables, increased dietary intake of selenium, carotenoids, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E did not decrease the odds of hypertension in postmenopausal women. Accordingly, it is suggested that this association be further investigated in the follow-up phase of this prospective study.

Associations of dietary antioxidant intake with periodontal health among US adults: An exploratory mediation analysis via mitochondrial function

AIM

To assess the relationship between dietary antioxidant intake and periodontal health in US adults and the potential role of mitochondrial function.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We performed a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014. Dietary antioxidant intake was evaluated using three diet-related indices: dietary oxidative balance score (DOBS), dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) of antioxidant vitamins and composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI). Periodontal parameters included attachment loss (AL) and probing pocket depth (PPD). Mitochondrial dysfunction was assessed using the methylmalonic acid (MMA) level. Weighted multivariable linear regression analyses were employed to investigate the association between dietary antioxidant intake and periodontal status. Additionally, exploratory mediation analyses were conducted to determine the mediating effect of MMA on the association.

RESULTS

Totally, 5520 participants were included in our study. Participants with higher DOBS and DTAC scores had lower mean AL/PPD and MMA values. CDAI was negatively associated with mean AL and PPD. Furthermore, MMA mediated 9.4% and 4.9% of the associations between DOBS and mean AL and mean PPD, respectively. MMA also accounted for 7.2% and 3.3% of the association between DTAC and mean AL and PPD, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings support that dietary antioxidant intake helps in improving periodontal health, possibly and partially by enhancing mitochondrial function.

Association between oxidative balance score and inflammatory markers in middle-aged and older Japanese people

PURPOSE

This study aimed to investigate the association between oxidative balance score (OBS), wherein higher OBSs indicate lower oxidative stress, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), as well as inflammatory scores, in a large cohort of Japanese adults.

METHODS

In total, 9703 individuals aged 40-69 years participated in a baseline survey of a population-based cohort study in Saga, Japan (2005-2007). OBSs were calculated from 11 prooxidant and antioxidant lifestyle factors, including dietary intake, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking status. Lifestyle data, including dietary intake, were obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Adjusted geometric means of serum hs-CRP levels were calculated based on OBS quartiles, and linear trend tests were performed, with adjustments for potential confounders. In addition, an inflammatory cytokine z-score was constructed and assessed alongside individual markers.

RESULTS

After adjusting for multiple confounders in both sexes, the results showed a significant inverse association between OBS and serum hs-CRP levels in both men and women. These results remained unaltered when the OBS evaluation excluded powerful prooxidants, serum ferritin, or smoking. There was also an association between OBS and lower inflammatory z-score, indicating reduced overall systemic inflammation.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that a higher OBS, indicating a greater predominance of antioxidants over prooxidant exposure, is associated with lower hs-CRP levels and reduced systemic inflammation, regardless of sex.

Association of composite dietary antioxidant index with mortality in adults with hypertension: evidence from NHANES

Objective

The objective of this study is to assess the correlation between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) with all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality in adults with hypertension.

Methods

The cohort study comprised adult participants with hypertension from the NHANES database, spanning 9 cycles from 2001 to 2018. Follow-up was conducted until December 31, 2019. Multi-variable Cox regression analysis was utilized to ascertain hazard ratios (HR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals, evaluating the relationship between CDAI and the risks of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. To further investigate the association between CDAI and mortality rates in adults with hypertension, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, restricted cubic splines (RCS), subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were employed.

Results

The analysis included 16,713 adults with hypertension (mean age 56.93 ± 0.23 years, 8,327 [49.61%] male). During the mean follow-up time 102.11 ± 1.22 months, with 3,908 (18.08%) all-cause mortality occurred, 1,082 (4.84%) cardiovascular mortality and 833 (3.80%) cancer mortality. Compared to the lowest quartile of CDAI, the weighted multivariate hazard ratios of participants in the highest quartile was 0.77 (95% CI, 0.68-0.87) for all-cause mortality, 0.83 (95% CI, 0.67-1.04) for cardiovascular mortality, and 0.64 (95% CI, 0.50-0.82) for cancer mortality. RCS analysis demonstrated a nonlinear association of CDAI with all-cause and cancer mortality, and a linear association between CDAI and cardiovascular mortality. The results were robust in subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses.

Conclusion

Higher CDAI is associated with reduced all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cancer mortality in hypertensive adults. Our findings highlight the importance of an antioxidant diet in improving outcomes in adults with hypertension.

Association between Dietary Antioxidant Capacity in Midlife and Depressive Symptoms in Late Life: The Singapore Chinese Health Study

Preclinical and limited epidemiological studies suggest that oxidative stress may be implicated in geriatric depression. Our study investigated the association between midlife dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and depressive symptoms in late life among 13,712 participants in a population-based cohort of Chinese in Singapore. At baseline (1993-1998), intake of antioxidants from diet and supplements at a mean age of 52.4 years was estimated using a validated food frequency questionnaire to derive two dietary TAC indices from vitamins C and E, carotenoids and flavonoids: the Comprehensive Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and Vitamin C Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (VCEAC). At follow-up 3 (2014-2016), when participants were at a mean age of 72.5 years, depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale, and depression, defined as having ≥5 symptoms, was presented in 3173 (23.1%) participants. Both CDAI and VCEAC indices were inversely associated with odds of depressive symptoms in a stepwise manner: the OR (95% CI) comparing the extreme quartiles was 0.73 (0.64-0.83; Ptrend < 0.01) for the CDAI and 0.77 (0.68-0.87; Ptrend < 0.01) for the VCEAC. Specifically, higher intakes of vitamin C, carotenoids, and flavonoids were associated with a lower likelihood of depressive symptoms. Our findings support the recommendation of an antioxidant-rich diet for the prevention of depression.

Characterizing the relationships between dietary indices, gallstone prevalence and the need for gallbladder surgery in the general US population

Background

The dietary inflammatory index (DII) and composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) were developed as tools for use when seeking to assess the potential inflammatory and antioxidant activity of a given diet, respectively. The associations between these indices and gallstone incidence remain largely unexplored.

Objective

The present study sought to clarify how both the DII and the CDAI are related to gallstone incidence and age at first gallbladder surgery among adults in the USA.

Methods

Cross-sectional data from the 2017-2020 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) pertaining to 12,426 individuals were used to conduct the present study. Data from 2 days with 24-h dietary recall were employed when calculating DII and CDAI scores. Relationships between dietary indices and the incidence of gallstones were assessed through logistic regression analyses, while linear regression analyses were employed to characterize how these indices are associated with the age at first gallbladder surgery.

Results

Higher DII scores and lower CDAI scores, which, respectively, denote diets with greater inflammatory potential and reduced antioxidant potential, were found to be associated with higher gallstone incidence even following adjustment for potential confounding factors. Smooth curve fitting suggested that the association between DII and gallstones was nearly linear, whereas that between CDAI and gallstone incidence was nonlinear. Higher DII values were also related to first gallbladder surgery at an earlier age (β = -0.64, 95% CI: -1.26, -0.02).

Conclusion

These results emphasize the benefits of anti-inflammatory diets rich in antioxidants, which may help reduce gallstone incidence among adults in the USA. Higher DII scores may also predict the need for gallbladder surgery at a younger age.

Composite dietary antioxidant index is associated with reduced prevalence of metabolic syndrome but not mortality in metabolic syndrome: Results from NHANES 2001-2018

The relationship between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI), a comprehensive measure of individual dietary antioxidants, and the prevalence and mortality of metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unknown. We aimed to explore these relationships in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We explored these relationships using two independent cohorts. First, we addressed CDAI and the prevalence of MetS in the general population; second, we explored the association between CDAI and mortality in patients with MetS by following NHANES 2001-2018 participants through December 31, 2019. In addition, restricted cubic spline (RCS), stratified analysis, and sensitivity analysis were used for further interpretation. We included 24,514 participants aged 20-85 years, in which the prevalence of MetS was 27.61 %. CDAI was negatively and dose-responsively associated with the prevalence of MetS, however it was not associated with mortality in patients with MetS. In addition, CDAI was associated with a reduced prevalence of certain components of MetS, including dyslipidemia and central obesity. RCS showed a linear correlation between CDAI and MetS and the above components. Stratified analyses indicated that alcohol consumption was a significant influence of CDAI-MetS and that socioeconomic status and lifestyle specificity existed. Sensitivity analysis confirmed the stability of the results. CDAI was protective against the development of MetS in the general population, but not against mortality in patients with MetS. Clinicians need to develop individualized prevention strategies to reduce the development of MetS by modifying CDAI.

Oxidative balance score: a potential tool for reducing the risk of colorectal cancer and its subsites incidences

Background

The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is commonly used to assess oxidative stress and provides a comprehensive evaluation of dietary and lifestyle-related exposures. However, there is limited research on the association between OBS and colorectal cancer (CRC), its subsites, and complications. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between OBS and the risk of CRC, its subsites, and common complications in a large prospective cohort study.

Methods

We included data from 175,808 participants in the UK Biobank data sample repository from 2006 to 2010. We evaluated OBS using a scoring system based on 22 dietary and lifestyle factors. Multiple adjustments, including multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression, gender stratification, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis, were performed to fully explore the relationship between OBS and CRC, its subsites, and complications. The mediation analysis was conducted to investigate whether serum albumin, uric acid, and neutrophil levels mediate the relationship between OBS and CRC.

Results

After adjusting for potential confounding factors, a significant negative correlation was found between OBS and the risk of CRC and its subsites (proximal colon cancer, distal colon cancer, and rectal cancer). This correlation was particularly pronounced in male CRC patients. Serum albumin, uric acid, and neutrophil count, which are biomarkers, were found to have a significant mediating effect between OBS and CRC.

Conclusion

Our study suggests that higher exposure to antioxidants assessed through OBS (diet and lifestyle rich in antioxidants) may decrease the occurrence of CRC and its subsites.

Association of composite dietary antioxidant index with depression and all-cause mortality in middle-aged and elderly population

Current research has shown an increasing acceptance of interventions for depression through dietary modifications. However, whether composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) is associated with depression and all-cause mortality in middle-aged and elderly population remains unknown. This study aimed to explore those associations in American middle-aged and elderly population. Weighted logistic regression models and weighted Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess the association of CDAI, covariates, depression, and all-cause mortality, respectively. The stability of the results was also determined by a linear trend test based on CDAI quintiles. Restricted cubic spline curves were employed to test for non-linear relationships. In the model adjusted for all covariates, significant associations were found with the ORs (95% CI) for CDAI and depression [0.77 (0.67, 0.89)] and the HRs (95% CI) for CDAI with all-cause mortality[0.91 (0.83, 1.00)]. Upon conducting restricted cubic spline curves, we found that the association between CDAI and depression was linear, whereas the association between CDAI and all-cause mortality was non-linear with an inflection point of -0.19. Statistical significance was only found before the inflection point. In this study of middle-aged and elderly Americans, CDAI was linearly negatively associated with depression and non-linearly negatively associated with all-cause mortality.

Association of dietary overall antioxidant intake with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among adults with depression: evidence from NHANES 2005-2018

Higher intakes of individual antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E have been linked to mortality in the general population, but the association of overall antioxidant intake with mortality especially in depressed adults remains unclear. We aimed to investigate whether the dietary overall antioxidant intake is associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among depressed adults. This study included 3051 US adults with depression, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to define depression and evaluate depression severity. The dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQS) and dietary antioxidant index (DAI) were calculated based on the intakes of vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and magnesium. A higher DAQS and DAI were significantly associated with lower depression scores (PHQ-9) (all P-trend < 0.05). For individual antioxidants, significant negative associations of vitamins A and E with all-cause mortality were observed. For overall antioxidant intake, the DAQS and DAI were inversely associated with all-cause and cancer mortality. Compared with participants in the lowest categories of DAQS and DAI, the corresponding HRs (95% CIs) in the highest categories were 0.63 (0.42-0.93) and 0.70 (0.49-0.98) for all-cause mortality and 0.39 (0.17-0.87) and 0.43 (0.21-0.88) for cancer mortality, respectively. The overall dietary antioxidant intake was beneficially associated with all-cause and cancer mortality in depressed adults. These findings suggest that comprehensive dietary antioxidant intake may improve depressive symptoms and lower mortality risk among adults with depression.

The association between the composite dietary antioxidant index and thyroid functionality among adults in the USA: NHANES 2007-2012

Objective

Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) values serve as a summary of an individual's combined dietary antioxidant intake. Although specific antioxidants are known to reduce thyroid damage from oxidative stress, the relationship between the CDAI and thyroid function remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was thus to investigate this relationship in greater detail while focusing on a representative American adult population.

Methods

A total of 6,860 subjects from the 2007-2012 NHANES cohort were included in this study. Associations between CDAI values and thyroid function were evaluated with weighted linear regression models and smoothed curve fitting. Subgroup analyses were also performed.

Results

The weighted mean (SD) values for variables analyzed in this study included a CDAI of 0.13 (0.06), serum free T4 (FT4) levels of 0.80 (0.01) ng/dL, and serum total T4 (TT4) levels of 7.80 (0.03) ug/dL. Lower CDAI values were found to be associated with higher levels of FT4 and TT4 using both unadjusted and adjusted models that accounted for relevant confounders (adjusted model, FT4 β = -0.003, p = 0.005; TT4 β = -0.035, p < 0.001). This negative correlation persisted when CDAI was categorized into quartiles (FT4, p for trend = 0.014; TT4, p for trend = 0.003).

Conclusion

These findings suggest that a diet rich in antioxidants, as reflected by higher CDAI scores, is associated with significant decreases in levels of free and total T4. Further analyses will be necessary to better clarify the underlying mechanisms behind these observations.

Association between the oxidative balance score and low muscle mass in middle-aged US adults

Background

Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a tool for assessing the oxidative stress-related exposures of diet and lifestyle. The study aimed to investigate the association between OBS and low muscle mass.

Methods

Overall, 6,307 individuals over the age of 18 were assessed using data from the 2011 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Weighted logistic regression and models were used, together with adjusted models.

Results

There was a negative relationship between OBS and low muscle mass [odds ratio (OR): 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.94-0.97, p< 0.0001] using the first OBS level as reference. The values (all 95% CI) were 0.745 (0.527-1.054) for the second level, 0.650 (0.456-0.927) for the third level, and 0.326 (0.206-0.514) for the fourth level (P for trend <0.0001). Independent links with low muscle mass were found for diet and lifestyle factors. A restricted cubic spline model indicated a non-linear association between OBS and low muscle mass risk (P for non-linearity<0.05). In addition, the inflection points of the nonlinear curves for the relationship between OBS and risk of low muscle mass were 20.

Conclusion

OBS and low muscle mass were found to be significantly negatively correlated. By modulating oxidative balance, a healthy lifestyle and antioxidant rich diet could be a preventive strategy for low muscle mass.

Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index is negatively associated with olfactory dysfunction among adults in the United States: A cross-sectional study

The Comprehensive Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) plays a crucial role as an indicator of diets rich in antioxidants. Despite its importance, the clinical significance of CDAI concerning olfactory dysfunction (OD) remains unknown. Our study aims to investigate whether there is an association between CDAI and OD within the general adult population aged 20 years and older. We hypothesized a negative correlation between CDAI and OD in the general adult population. A cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 1624; >20 y of age). A multivariate logistic regression model examined the connection between CDAI and OD. Smooth-fitted curves were used to investigate the nonlinear relationship between CDAI and OD. A threshold effect analysis was then used to pinpoint the inflection point. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on gender and age. Multivariate regression analysis revealed a negative correlation between CDAI and OD. After controlling for variables, the risk of OD in the highest quartile of CDAI was significantly lower than in the lowest quartile (Q1) (odds ratio = 0.64; 95% confidence interval, 0.44-0.92; P = .0148). Stratified analysis indicated a significant association between CDAI and OD in individuals younger than age 60 years and male. This research suggests that increasing the co-ingestion of antioxidants within a moderate range can reduce the incidence of OD.

Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index is inversely associated with visceral adipose tissue area among U.S. adults: A cross-sectional study

Obesity is becoming a global health problem. Visceral adiposity is the main cause of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Dietary improvement is the key to controlling obesity. We hypothesized that a higher Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) was associated with a lower visceral adipose tissue (VAT) area. In this cross-sectional study, 10,389 adults were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2018. CDAI was calculated based on 6 micronutrients: zinc, selenium, total carotenoids, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. VAT area was determined by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan. Linear regression models were constructed to evaluate the association between CDAI and VAT area. Subgroup analyses were also performed. The mean age of participants was 39.68 years, 5240 were male, and 3841 of those were non-Hispanic White. The inverse associations were observed in all models. In model 3, CDAI was inversely associated with VAT area as a continuous variable, β (95% confidence interval), -0.56 (-0.85 to -0.27). When compared with the first tertile, the third tertile of CDAI was also inversely associated with VAT area, β (95% confidence interval), -6.72 (-10.44 to -2.99). No interactions were found in the subgroup analyses. In conclusion, an inverse association between CDAI and VAT area was found among U.S. adults aged 20 to 59 years. These results suggest the possible benefit of an antioxidant diet in relieving visceral obesity. More prospective studies are needed to identify this dietary benefit.

Association between the dietary antioxidant index and relative telomere length of leucocytes in the Chinese population

Dietary antioxidant indices (DAI) may be potentially associated with relative telomere length (RTL) of leucocytes. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between DAI and RTL. A cross-sectional study involving 1656 participants was conducted. A generalised linear regression model and a restricted cubic spline model were used to assess the correlation of DAI and its components with RTL. Generalised linear regression analysis revealed that DAI (β = 0·005, P = 0·002) and the intake of its constituents vitamin C (β = 0·043, P = 0·027), vitamin E (β = 0·088, P < 0·001), Se (β = 0·075, P = 0·003), and Zn (β = 0·075, P = 0·023) were significantly and positively correlated with RTL. Sex-stratified analysis showed that DAI (β = 0·006, P = 0·005) and its constituents vitamin E (β = 0·083, P = 0·012), Se (β = 0·093, P = 0·006), and Zn (β = 0·092, P = 0·034) were significantly and positively correlated with RTL among females. Meanwhile, among males, only vitamin E intake (β = 0·089, P = 0·013) was significantly and positively associated with RTL. Restricted cubic spline analysis revealed linear positive associations between DAI and its constituents' (vitamin E, Se and Zn) intake and RTL in the total population. Sex-stratified analysis revealed a linear positive correlation between DAI and its constituents' (vitamin E, Se and Zn) intake and RTL in females. Our study found a significant positive correlation between DAI and RTL, with sex differences.

An L-shaped association between composite dietary antioxidant index and stroke: Evidence from NHANES 2011-2020

OBJECTIVES

Antioxidant diets are considered to be protective factors against stroke. However, comprehensive measurement and evaluation of antioxidant diets are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and stroke in adults.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this study, based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2020 data, multivariate logistic regression, smoothing curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis were used to explore the relationship between CDAI and stroke. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted to assess the stability of this association within the population.

RESULTS

Among 12,922 U.S. adults, there was a significant negative correlation between CDAI and the prevalence of stroke. In the fully adjusted model, the risk of stroke was reduced by 4 % for each 1-unit increase in CDAI (OR [95% CI] = 0.96 [0.93, 0.99]). Participants in the highest quartile of the CDAI had a 37 % lower risk of stroke than those in the lowest quartile (OR [95% CI] = 0.63 [0.47, 0.84]). This negative correlation remained stable across subgroups. Furthermore, the study revealed an L-shaped association between CDAI and stroke through smoothing curve fitting. The threshold effect analysis further identified the inflection point as -1.55.

CONCLUSIONS

This study revealed an L-shaped relationship between CDAI and stroke. Keeping CDAI in the proper range may help prevent stroke in the general population.

Linear association of compound dietary antioxidant index with hyperlipidemia: a cross-sectional study

Background

There is growing evidence that antioxidant-rich diets may prevent hyperlipidemia. However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and hyperlipidemia is unclear. The CDAI is a composite score reflecting the antioxidant content of an individual's diet, and this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia.

Methods

The study used the 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for cross-sectional analyses and included 27,626 participants aged 20 years and older. The CDAI, which includes vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids, was calculated based on dietary intake reported in a 24-h recall interview. Hyperlipidemia was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Covariates included age, sex, race, education, marriage, household poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), body mass index (BMI), energy, carbohydrates, total fat, cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, and lipid-lowering medications. The association between CDAI and hyperlipidemia was explored through multiple logistic regression analyses and smoothed curve fitting. We also performed subgroup analyses and interaction tests to verify the relationship's stability.

Results

After adjusting for potential confounders, CDAI was negatively associated with the risk of developing hyperlipidemia (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.96-0.99, p < 0.01). The results of weighted regression models stratified by quartiles of CDAI (-8.664 ≤ Q1 ≤ -2.209, -2.209 < Q2 ≤ -0.002, -0.002 < Q3 ≤ 2.774, 2.774 < Q4 ≤ 124.284), fully adjusted for confounding variables, indicated that compared with the bottom quartile (Q1) of the CDAI, Q2, Q3, and Q4 of participants had a lower advantage ratio (Q2: OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.78-1.06, p < 0.21; Q3: OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.73-1.00, p < 0.05; and Q4: OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.64-0.94, p < 0.01), which was confirmed by a test for trend (p < 0.05). Smoothed curve fit analysis showed linearity (p for non-linear = 0.0912). In summary, there is a linear negative relationship between CDAI and the risk of developing hyperlipidemia. Subgroup analyses by age, sex, ethnicity, education level, marriage, tobacco status, alcoholic drinking, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, and diabetes did not indicate strong interactions.

Conclusion

In this large cross-sectional study, there was a linear negative association between CDAI and hyperlipidemia among US adults. Therefore increase antioxidant rich foods in your life as a prevention of hyperlipidemia.

Associations between the platelet/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and likelihood of nephrolithiasis: a cross-sectional analysis in United States adults

Aims

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the platelet/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR) and the prevalence of nephrolithiasis within the adult population of the United States.

Methods

The data used in this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2007 and 2018. The analysis included a non-pregnant population aged 20 years or older, providing proper PHR index and nephrolithiasis data. The research utilized subgroup analyses and weighted univariate and multivariable logistic regression to evaluate the independent association between the PHR and the susceptibility to nephrolithiasis.

Results

The study comprised 30,899 participants with an average PHR value of 19.30 ± 0.11. The overall prevalence rate of nephrolithiasis was estimated at 9.98% with an increase in the higher PHR tertiles (T1, 8.49%; T2, 10.11%; T3, 11.38%, P < 0.0001). An elevated PHR level was closely linked with a higher susceptibility to nephrolithiasis. Compared with patients in T1, and after adjusting for potential confounders in model 2, the corresponding odds ratio for nephrolithiasis in T3 was 1.48 (95% CI: 1.06 to 2.08), with a P-value = 0.02. The results of the interaction tests revealed a significant impact of chronic kidney disease on the relationship between PHR and nephrolithiasis. Furthermore, the restricted cubic spline analyses exhibited a positive, non-linear correlation between PHR and the risk of nephrolithiasis.

Conclusion

A convenient biomarker, the PHR, was independently associated with nephrolithiasis and could be a novel biomarker in predicting occurrence in clinical decision.

Dietary antioxidant intake increases ankle brachial pressure index in men but not in women: a cross-sectional study

Objective

Atherosclerosis is a significant cause of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, with a greater impact on men than women. Dietary antioxidant intake is inversely related to the risk of atherosclerosis development. We aimed to investigate the association between dietary composite antioxidant intake and the ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI). The ABPI is not only used for assessing the progression of arterial lesions but also for stratifying the risk of atherosclerotic disease.

Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional analysis involving 1,049 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We examined six antioxidants (zinc, selenium, carotenoids, and vitamins A, C, and E) and a composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) derived from these antioxidants as exposure variables. The primary outcomes encompassed cardio-metabolic parameters, including body mass index (BMI), body fat mass (BFM), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL and LDL cholesterol, C-reactive protein, and the Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI). Associations and interactions between variables were assessed using linear regression analyses. Moreover, mediation and moderation analysis is employed.

Results

Hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that among men, dietary intake of zinc, selenium, and vitamin A remained positively associated with a higher ABPI even after adjusting for covariates. Conversely, in the stratified regression analysis based on CDAI quartiles, a U-shaped association between CDAI and ABPI was suggested. Notably, no significant association between dietary antioxidant intake and ABPI was observed among women. CDAI, intake of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E do not influence all-cause death through mediation by abpi, but rather have a direct effect on all-cause death. Moreover, there is a significant interaction between the intake of Vitamin A and gender, where a daily intake of Vitamin A more than 776 ug is especially beneficial for women.

Conclusion

The combined intake of nutrients with antioxidant properties may prevent the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis and influence the outcome in a sex-specific manner.

The Association Between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index and Frailty Symptoms: Mediating Effects of Oxidative Stress

Background

There is growing evidence that an antioxidant diet is a protective factor against frailty. However, few studies have examined the effect of comprehensive dietary antioxidants on frailty symptoms. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and frailty and the underlying mechanisms involved.

Methods

Based on the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) 2003-2018, this study included 11,277 older persons aged ≥60 years. In this study, frailty was defined as having a total score >0.21 on the 49-item frailty index. Six dietary antioxidants were selected for use in calculating the CDAI. A weighted multiple logistic regression model with subgroup analysis and restricted cubic splines (RCSs) were used to examine the association between the CDAI and frailty. To examine the role of oxidative stress, mediation analyses were also conducted.

Results

The association between the CDAI score and frailty risk was significant according to the multivariate model. Compared with participants in tertile 1, participants in both tertile 2 and tertile 3 had lower odds of developing frailty symptoms (OR=0.86; 95% CI=0.75-0.97; P=0.02; and OR=0.81; 95% CI=0.70-0.93; P=0.003). According to the subgroup analyses, the differences in interactions were not statistically significant. There was also a potential nonlinear relationship between the CDAI score and frailty risk. The serum albumin concentration and uric acid concentration had significant mediating effects on the association between the CDAI score and frailty index, with 19.25% (P=0.002) and 21.26% (P < 0.001) of the total, respectively.

Conclusion

Frailty is negatively associated with the CDAI score, which may be partially mediated by oxidative stress.

Dietary antioxidant status indices may not interact with CETP Taq1B polymorphism on lipid profile and severity of coronary artery stenosis in patients under coronary angiography

The association of CETP Taq1B polymorphism with some metabolic traits is still controversial. The interaction of adherence to dietary indices with this polymorphism on the severity of coronary artery stenosis and serum lipid parameters needs to be investigated. This study aimed to test this hypothesis. This cross-sectional study included 453 patients who were referred from Afshar Hospital of Yazd and undergoing coronary angiography from 2020 to 2021. Dietary intake was evaluated by a 178-item validated and reliable dietary questionnaire. Dietary indices such as dietary antioxidant index (DAI), dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQS), and dietary phytochemical index (DPI) are determined according to dietary guidelines. The Taq1B variant was genotyped by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method (PCR-RFLP). Two-way ANOVA was used to test the interaction between Taq1B polymorphism and dietary indices. The results of the frequency analysis of Taq1B genotypes showed that 10.4% were B1B1, 72.4% B1B2, and 17.2% B2B2. No significant interaction was found between the Taq1B variant with high adherence to DAQS, DAI, and DPI on total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), triglyceride (TG) levels, and Gensini score (GS) and Syntax score (SS). In high-adherence dietary indices, lipid profile and coronary artery stenosis scores did not differ significantly in Taq1B genotypes. Due to the insignificant results in this research, further studies are needed to investigate the role of Taq1B SNP in modulating dyslipidemia and the severity of the CAD in interaction with dietary indices.

Association of composite dietary antioxidant index and muscle mass in individuals with metabolic associated fatty liver disease

BACKGROUND

There is mounting evidence indicating the association between oxidative stress and the detrimental effect it poses on muscle mass. However, the crucial interplay between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), a key metric of antioxidant-rich diets, and the occurrence of muscle loss has remained largely unexplored. Hence, in this study, we aim to investigate the potential relationship between CDAI and muscle loss METHODS: This cross-sectional investigation harnessed data sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2017 and 2018) to meticulously scrutinize the correlation between the CDAI and the occurrence of muscle loss. To unravel this intricate relationship, we engaged in multivariate weighted logistic regression analysis and employed smooth curve fitting techniques. Additionally, subgroup analyses were meticulously performed.

RESULTS

A total of 956 participants, with an average age of 42.15 years, were included in the final analysis, of which 52.19 % were males. Notably, the prevalence of low muscle mass among the study population was observed to be 15.48 %. The utilization of smooth curve fitting analysis underscored a nearly linear association between the CDAI and the presence of low muscle mass. Employing multivariate weighted logistic regression analysis, it was determined that the odds ratio (OR) between CDAI and low muscle mass was 0.88 (95 % [CI], 0.73-0.95). Through subgroup analyses, we further validated that CDAI independently mitigated the risk of muscle loss.

CONCLUSION

Higher CDAI levels were found to be associated with an reduced risk of low muscle mass in adults with metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD).

Oxidative balance score was negatively associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome, metabolic syndrome severity, and all-cause mortality of patients with metabolic syndrome

Background

The oxidative balance score (OBS), an encompassing scoring mechanism for assessing oxidative stress, is formulated based on nutritional and lifestyle components. The emergence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is intricately linked to oxidative stress. Nonetheless, the correlation between OBS and MetS displays variability within distinct cohorts.

Objective

We worked on the relationships between OBS and the risk of MetS, MetS severity, and all-cause mortality of MetS patients.

Methods

A total of 11,171 adult participants were collected from the U.S. National Health Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. Employing survey-weighted logistic models, we evaluated the relationship between OBS and MetS risk. Furthermore, survey-weighted linear models were utilized to investigate the connection between OBS and MetS severity. Among the participants, 3,621 individuals had their survival status recorded, allowing us to employ Cox proportional hazards regression models in order to ascertain the association between OBS and the all-cause mortality within the subset of individuals with MetS. The OBS (where a higher OBS signified an increased prevalence of anti- or pro-oxidant exposures) weighed the 20 factors, while the MetS severity score weighed the five factors.

Results

After multivariable adjustment, individuals with elevated OBS were found to exhibit a decreased susceptibility to MetS [odds ratio (OR) 0.95; 95% CI 0.94-0.96]. The adjusted OR was 0.42 (95% CI 0.33-0.53) for MetS risk in the fourth OBS quartile compared with those in the first OBS quartile (P for trend < 0.001). A one-unit increase in OBS was linked to a 3% reduction in MetS severity score by 3% (mean difference, -0.03; 95% CI, -0.04 to -0.03). Moreover, increased OBS correlated with decreased hazard of all-cause mortality risk among MetS subjects (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.93-0.98). These associations retained their strength even subsequent to the introduction of sensitivity analyses. There existed a statistically significant negative correlation between diet/lifestyle OBS and both MetS risk as well as MetS severity.

Conclusions

An inverse correlation was observed between OBS and the susceptibility to MetS, MetS severity, and all-cause mortality of MetS patients. Health outcomes for MetS patients were positively related to antioxidant diets and lifestyles.

Association between different composite dietary antioxidant indexes and low back pain in American women adults: a cross-sectional study from NHANES

BACKGROUND

Low back pain is the leading cause of productivity loss, imposes a significant economic burden on the patients and society. Oxidative stress is considered a critical factor in the complex pathophysiological process and pathogenic mechanism of low back pain. Adjustment dietary pattern can effectively increase antioxidant biomarkers levels within the body to reduce oxidative stress. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) serves a reliable scoring system for quantifying the potential dietary antioxidant capacity of daily diets.

OBJECTIVE

We aim to investigate the potential association between CDAI and low back pain, in order to enhance the management of low back pain through dietary guidance.

METHODS

This study included 17,682 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000, 2001-2002, 2003-2004 and 2009-2010. The weighted logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between CDAI and low back pain, while restricted cubic spline (RCS) was employed to examine non-linear trend and cutoffs.

RESULTS

After adjusting for all confounders, the results showed that there was no significant association between CDAI and low back pain. However, individuals in the highest quartile of CDAI exhibited an 11.7% less likelihood of experiencing a low back pain than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.883; 95% CI [0.787,0.991], P = 0.034), and the trend test was also significant (P for trend < 0.001). RCS indicated a linear relationship between CDAI and low back pain (P for non-linear = 0.876). Gender subgroup analysis showed that this negative association was significant in the female population (OR = 0.983; 95% CI [0.968, 0.998], P = 0.027), and females in the highest quartile of CDAI were 19.7% less likely to suffer low back pain than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.803; 95% CI [0.682,0.945], P = 0.008). Additionally, the changes in zinc (OR = 1.009; 95% CI [1.002, 1.016], P = 0.015) and selenium (OR = 0.379; 95% CI [0.164, 0.875], P = 0.023) per milligram were independently associated with low back pain.

CONCLUSION

The fully adjusted model showed no significant association between CDAI and low back pain, but it was significant in quartiles. Meanwhile, subgroup analysis by gender revealed a negative association between CDAI and low back pain in the female population. Additionally, the findings of this study also suggested that the antioxidant diets should be studied in a dietary pattern context.

Association Between Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index and Cognitive Function Among Aging Americans from NHANES 2011-2014

Background

Antioxidant diets are considered to be protective factors for cognitive function. However, comprehensive measures of antioxidant diets are lacking.

Objective

To examine the association between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and cognitive function in the elderly.

Methods

This cross-sectional study included a total of 2,456 participants (≥60 years old) from NHANES 2011-2014. Calculation of CDAI based on 6 minerals and vitamins (manganese, selenium, zinc, vitamins A, C, and E). Cognitive function was measured by the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) Word Learning sub-test, Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). We also created a composite cognitive z-score to represent global cognition. The statistical analyses we used included multiple linear regression analyses, subgroup analyses, curve-fitting analyses, and threshold effects analyses.

Results

After controlling for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and disease history, multivariate linear regression analyses showed that increased CDAI was positively associated with scores on global cognitive function and each cognitive domain (p < 0.05), with subgroup analyses suggesting that this association was more pronounced in stroke patients (p for interaction < 0.05). Curve-fitting analyses and threshold effect analyses showed saturation effects between CDAI and CREAD Test, AFT, and composite Z-score, and an inverted U-shaped relationship with DSST, with inflection points of -1.89, 0.79, 1.13, and 1.77, respectively.

Conclusions

Our findings support that higher levels of CDAI are correlated with significantly elevated cognitive function. Maintaining CDAI in an appropriate range may contribute to cognitive health in elderly.

Dietary antioxidant intake reduces carotid intima-media thickness in coronary heart disease patients: From the CORDIOPREV study

BACKGROUND

Atherosclerosis is the leading underlying cause of coronary heart disease (CHD). In patients with CHD, intima-media thickness of common carotid arteries (IMT-CC) is a reliable, validated, and non-invasive marker of the progression of atherosclerosis. Dietary intervention may affect IMT-CC evolution through different pathways. There is a lack of clinical trials evaluating the effect of total dietary antioxidant content of diets on IMT-CC, especially in patients with CHD.

OBJECTIVE

We evaluated the correlation between the diet's total antioxidant content and the changes in IMT-CC produced after 5 years of dietary intervention following two healthy diet models (Mediterranean diet and low-fat diet). We also evaluated whether the diet's total antioxidant content was related to the total redox capacity of the participants.

METHODS

From the total participants of the CORDIOPREV study (clinical trial register NCT00924937), 805 participants completed the IMT-CC measurement and the dietary antioxidant evaluation at baseline and after 5 years of dietary intervention. IMT-CC was carried out by ultrasound and the dietary antioxidant evaluation was performed by the Dietary Antioxidant Index (DAI). Additionally, direct redox balance was evaluated in a subset of population by the ratio of reduced glutathione (GSH) to oxidized glutathione (GSSH) by colorimetric assay.

RESULTS

We observed an inverse correlation between evolution of DAI and IMT-CC after 5-years of dietary intervention. The mean of the DAI index augmented in the Mediterranean Diet group, whereas it decreased in the Low-fat group. DAI was correlated to the GSH/GSSG ratio, supporting DAI as an adequate estimator of diet's antioxidant content. When looking for individual components of the DAI that were associated to the changes in IMT-CC, an inverse correlation was found for carotenoids, vitamin E, vitamin C, and zinc and the IMT-CC.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study indicates that, after five years of dietary intervention, changes in DAI inversely correlate with changes in IMT-CC in patients with CHD. Overall effect of Mediterranean diet resulted in an increase of DAI, conversely to low-fat. Specific elements included in the DAI index were inversely correlated with IMT-CC.

Association between dietary antioxidant intakes and chronic respiratory diseases in adults

Background

Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) pose a significant global health burden. Antioxidant-rich diets have been associated with improved lung health, but the specific relationship with CRDs remains unclear.

Methods

This study examined the relationship between dietary antioxidant intakes and CRDs using data from the 2001-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Information on dietary antioxidant intakes, including vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoid, were collected from the 2 24-h recall interviews to calculate composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI). CRDs were determined based on self-reported physician diagnoses. To examine the relationship between CDAI and CRDs, multivariate logistic regression was used. To study potential non-linear correlations within these associations, restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression was performed.

Results

The study involved 40 557 individuals. The median CDAI was -0.09 (-2.05, 2.25). We discovered those who were in the fourth quartile of CDAI scores had a 19% lower prevalence than those in the first quartile (OR = 0.81 [0.72-0.91], Ptrend < 0.01) after adjusting for all relevant covariates. The fourth quartile of CDAI was linked with a lower prevalence of emphysema (OR = 0.57 [0.40-0.81], Ptrend < 0.01) and chronic bronchitis (OR = 0.74 [0.62-0.88], Ptrend < 0.01). RCS regression showed that CDAI was non-linearly related to the prevalence of CRDs, with inflection points of 3.20 (P for non-linearity <0.01). The stratified analysis did not identify variables that significantly affected the results.

Conclusion

Higher dietary antioxidant intakes were related with a lower prevalence of CRDs (particularly emphysema and chronic bronchitis) in general adults.

Association between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index and Stroke: A cross-sectional Study

The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) is indeed a valuable nutritional tool used to evaluate the overall antioxidant capacity of an individual's daily food consumption. The CDAI was calculated from the intake of six antioxidant components in the diet, including vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E, carotenoids, selenium, and zinc. This study aimed to determine the association between CDAI and stroke. Utilizing data from the 2003-2018 NHANES dataset, CDAI was computed by summarizing the intake of six dietary antioxidants based on 24-hour dietary recall interviews. The relationship between CDAI and stroke was examined using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analysis. This study ultimately included 39,432 participants, of whom 1,527 (3.87%) had a stroke. The multivariate logistic regression model 3 that fully adjusted all confounding variables showed a negative association between CDAI and stroke (OR = 0.97; 95% CI:0.95, 0.99). The highest tertile of CDAI saw a 23% drop in the prevalence of stroke compared to the lowest tertile (OR = 0.77; 95%CI: 0.64,0.92). Restricted cubic spline suggested that this negative correlation was nonlinear with an inflection point of -2.99. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed that this negative correlation was more applicable in patients with prediabetes (P < 0.05). There was a non-linear negative correlation between CDAI level and stroke prevalence, and this correlation was more significant in people with pre-diabetes. Appropriate CDAI levels may contribute to the management of stroke risk.

Association Study between Antioxidant Nutrient Intake and Low Bone Mineral Density with Oxidative Stress-Single Nucleotide Variants: GPX1 (rs1050450 and rs17650792), SOD2 (rs4880) and CAT (rs769217) in Mexican Women

Oxidative stress is essential in developing multiple bone metabolism diseases, including osteoporosis. Single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) have been associated with oxidative stress, promoting an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and the ability to neutralize them, and it has been reported that antioxidant nutrient intake can influence bone mineral density (BMD). This work reports the association between oxidative stress-related SNVs (GPX1-rs1050450, rs17650792, SOD2-rs4880, and CAT-rs769217), BMD, and antioxidant nutrient intake. The study included 1269 Mexican women from the Health Workers Cohort Study. Genotyping was performed using predesigned TaqMan assays. Dietary data were collected using a 116-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. A dietary antioxidant quality score (DAQS) was used to estimate antioxidant-nutrient intake. Association analysis was estimated via linear, logistic, or quantile regression models. The results showed an association of the rs1050450-A and rs17650792-A alleles with femoral neck BMD (p = 0.038 and p = 0.017, respectively) and the SNV rs4880-A allele with total hip BMD (p = 0.026) in respondents aged 45 years or older. In addition, antioxidant-nutrient intake was associated with the rs4880-GG genotype, being significant for fiber (p = 0.007), riboflavin (p = 0.005), vitamin B6 (p = 0.034), and vitamin D (p = 0.002). The study showed an association between oxidative stress-related SNVs, BMD, and antioxidant-nutrient intake in Mexican women. Therefore, treatments for low BMD could be developed based on antioxidant supplementation.

Association between composite dietary antioxidant index and coronary heart disease among US adults: a cross-sectional analysis

BACKGROUND

The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) is a dietary antioxidant score that plays a protective role in many diseases, including depression, osteoporosis, papillomavirus infection, etc. However, the association between CDAI and coronary heart disease (CHD) is currently unclear. We aim to explore the correlations between CDAI and the risk of CHD.

METHODS

Eligible participants were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018. All participants in this cross-sectional study are required to undergo two separate 24-h dietary recall interviews. Average daily intakes of dietary antioxidants were used to calculate CDAI. CHD status was determined through a questionnaire. Weighted multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate the relationship between CDAI and CHD. Moreover, we also used restricted cubic spline to explore Non-linear correlations. Sensitivity analysis using unweighted logistic analysis and subgroup analysis were used to demonstrate the stability of the results.

RESULTS

A total of 34,699 participants were eligible for analysis.Compared to the participants without CHD, the participants with CHD showed lower levels of CDAI. After adjusting confounding factors in the multivariate weighted logistic regression model, CDAI was inversely associated with CHD (Q4 vs. Q1, OR = 0.65 (0.51-0.82, P < 0.001). Restricted cubic spline showed that there was a negative non-linear correlation (L-shaped) between CDAI and CHD, suggesting a potential saturation effect at higher CDAI levels, with the inflection point of 0.16. Sensitivity analysis showed that the results were stable. No significant statistically interaction was showed in subgroup analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

There was a negative non-linear correlation between CDAI and CHD in US adults. However, further prospective studies are still needed to reveal their relationship.

Physical activity modifies the association of the composite dietary antioxidant index with all-cause mortality in the US osteoarthritis population

Background

It remains unclear how antioxidant intake affects all-cause mortality in osteoarthritis (OA) patients. In this prospective cohort study, we aim to explore the association of the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) with all-cause mortality and investigate the interaction of physical activity (PA) and CDAI on all-cause mortality in OA populations.

Methods

A total of 3,197 adults with OA in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2018 were included in this study. Death outcomes were obtained from National Death Index (NDI) records. Multivariable Cox regression analyses with cubic spines were applied to estimate the association of CDAI with all-cause mortality. The interaction between CDAI and PA on all-cause mortality was further assessed in stratified analysis and interaction tests.

Results

The hazard ratios for all-cause mortality were 0.95 (0.77-1.17) for Q2, 0.75 (0.59-0.97) for Q3, and 0.71 (0.55-0.92) for Q4 (P for trend <0.001), compared with the lowest quartile of CDAI. A negative linear association was found between CDAI and all-cause mortality. In the stratified analyses, CDAI was negatively associated with all-cause mortality in the insufficient PA group. While in the low and sufficient PA group, there were nonlinear relationships of CDAI with all-cause mortality.

Conclusion

A negative linear relationship was observed between CDAI and all-cause mortality in OA patients, and this association was significantly modified by PA. Higher intake of dietary antioxidants might be the interventional objective to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality in the US OA population.

Bone mineral density is associated with composite dietary antioxidant index among US adults: results from NHANES

This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and individual dietary antioxidant intakes, including vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids, and bone mineral density (BMD) in the US population aged 20 years older. We found a positive correlation between CDAI and femoral BMD. Moreover, higher intakes of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, and carotenoids were associated with higher femoral BMD.

INTRODUCTION

While individual dietary antioxidants have shown beneficial effects on bone metabolism, the diverse and potentially interacting nature of dietary components may limit the accuracy of evaluating their impact on bone health. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between CDAI and BMD. Additionally, we explore the relationship between the intake of individual components of the CDAI and BMD.

METHODS

The CDAI is a novel index evaluating total dietary antioxidant intake, considering vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from participants aged ≥ 20 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2010, 2013-2014, and 2017-2018). We utilized multivariate linear regression models to examine the relationship between CDAI, individual dietary antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, carotenoids, and femoral BMD.

RESULTS

The final analysis included 10,584 participants with a mean age of 50.73 ± 16.65 years. After multivariate adjustment, the second to fourth quartiles of CDAI (- 2.00-0.04, 0.04-2.54, and 2.54-70.78) exhibited higher femoral BMD compared to the first quartile of CADI (- 7.34 to - 2.00). Multiple regression analysis revealed that higher intakes of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, and carotenoids were associated with higher femoral BMD.

CONCLUSIONS

CDAI serves as a comprehensive tool for evaluating the overall antioxidant capacity of antioxidants in diets. Additionally, our study shows a positive correlation between CDAI and BMD, which indicates that the combined intake of dietary antioxidants may help reduce the risk of osteoporosis in adults.

Composite dietary antioxidant index and the risk of heart failure: A cross-sectional study from NHANES

BACKGROUND

Previous studies show that oxidative stress is important in heart failure (HF) pathogenesis. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI), which reflects the antioxidant profile of nutrient supplements, is associated with cardiovascular mortality risk. However, the association between CDAI and the risk of HF remains unknown.

HYPOTHESIS

In this study, we investigated the relationship between CDAI and HF risk using National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) data.

METHODS

The data of participants aged >40 years old from the NHNANES between 2001 and 2018 were obtained and used to assess the relationship between CDAI and the risk of HF. Logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) of CDAI for the risk of HF.

RESULTS

A total of 29 101 participants were divided into the HF (n = 1419; 4.88%) and non-HF groups (n = 27 682; 95.12%), HF group participants had lower CDAI than the non-HF group (-0.32 ± 0.14 vs. 0.67 ± 0.05, p < .0001). Compared with the lowest CDAI quartile (Q1), the OR for HF risk was 0.88 (0.68-1.13) for Q2 (p = .30), 0.77 (0.61-0.99) for Q3 (p = .04), and 0.68 (0.52-0.89) for Q4 (p = .01).

CONCLUSIONS

CDAI was negatively associated with the risk of HF. Our findings show that the intake of an antioxidant-rich dietary is a potential method to reduce the risk of HF.

The association of dietary antioxidant index (DAI) with breast cancer among Iranian women

Recent studies have reported that dietary antioxidants can influence the risk of breast cancer (BC). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association of dietary antioxidant index (DAI) with BC among Iranian women. This case-control study was conducted on 180 women with breast cancer and 360 healthy women who were referred to the cancer clinic of Shohadaye Tajrish Hospital in Tehran, Iran. A 168-item validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess dietary intake. The DAI score was calculated based on the intake of antioxidant vitamins and minerals derived from the FFQ. The control group had a significantly higher intake of vitamin D (1.79±1.56 vs. 1.05±0.84 μg/d; P=0.01) and lower intake of calorie (2315±1066 vs. 2737±925 kcal/d; P=0.01), carbohydrate (311±170 vs. 402±124 g/d; P=0.01), iron (15.4±12.1 vs. 19.7±6.4 mg/d; P=0.01), thiamine (1.5±0.7 vs. 2.3±0.9 mg/d; P=0.01), niacin (18.2±9.2 vs. 24.3±7.9 mg/d; P=0.01), folic acid (465±308.7 vs. 673±205.2 μg/d; P=0.01), and selenium (82.6±41.7 vs. 98.7±40.8 μg/d; P=0.01) compared to the case group. No significant association was found between DAI with breast cancer after adjustments for age. DAI had a negative association with breast cancer after additional adjustments for BMI, the number of pregnancies, duration of breastfeeding, menopause age, and total energy intake (OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.90-.93, and all P<0.001). The present study identified a negative association between DAI and the risk of BC, indicating the importance of antioxidants in preventing BC. Longitudinal studies should be conducted to confirm this association.

Oxidative balance score and risk of cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

BACKGROUND

The oxidative balance score (OBS) has been utilized to assess the overall pro- and antioxidant exposure status in various chronic diseases. The current meta-analysis was carried out to pool the association between OBS and the risk of cancer.

METHODS

We systematically searched the Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar up to August 2023. All observational studies which evaluated the association of OBS with the risk of cancers were included. There was no time of publication or language restrictions. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using the Chi-square-based Q-test and the I2. A random-effects model meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the pooled effect sizes. Possible sources of heterogeneity were explored by subgroup and meta-regression analysis.

RESULTS

Totally, 15 studies (9 case-control and 6 cohorts) were eligible for meta-analysis. Random effect model meta-analysis of case-control studies showed that higher OBS significantly decreases the odds of cancers (pooled OR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.54, 0.74). In the cohort studies, the association of OBS with the risk of cancers was not significant (pooled HR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.80,1.18). The subgroup analysis showed that cancer type and gender were the potential sources of heterogeneity.

CONCLUSION

Our results show an inverse and significant association between higher OBS and odds of colorectal cancers in case-control and cohort studies. In the case of prostate cancer in cohort studies, our results did not align with the hypothesis. Considering the importance of diet and antioxidant balance in the conditions of malignancy, it is suggested to conduct more comprehensive studies with standard measurement methods to obtain conclusive results.

Female infertility and dietary antioxidant index (DAI); a case-control study

BACKGROUND

Adequate intake of natural antioxidants may improve female fertility. The aim of this study was to examine the link between female infertility and dietary antioxidant index (DAI).

METHODS

This case-control study was conducted on 125 women with recently diagnosis of reduced ovarian reserves (AMH < 1.1) as the case group and 125 women with normal ovarian reserve as the control group in Rasht, Iran. The amount of food intake was assessed using the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and the DAI was calculated to estimate the antioxidant capacity of the diet.

RESULTS

Regarding dietary intake, the infertile women had a lower intake of potassium (2789.25 ± 777 vs. 2593.68 ± 443 mg/d, P = 0.02), magnesium (204.12 ± 66 vs. 189.73 ± 34 mg/d, P = 0.03), copper (0.93 ± 0.40 vs. 0.82 ± 0.20 mg/d, P < 0.01), vitamin C (133.99 ± 46 vs. 122.62 ± 24 mg/d, P = 0.02), and fiber (14.53 ± 3 vs. 13.44 ± 2 g/d, P < 0.05), and a higher intake of cholesterol (205.61 ± 58 vs. 227.02 ± 46 mg/d, P < 0.01) than the control group (All P < 0.05). The DAI was negatively associated with infertility (OR: 0.94, CI 95%: 0.88-0.97, P = 0.03). The association remained significant after adjustments for age, BMI, the underlying diseases, fertility frequency, IVF failure, and calorie intake.

CONCLUSION

Following an antioxidant-rich diet may reduce the risk of infertility. More longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm these results and discover the underlying mechanisms.

Relationship between composite dietary antioxidant index and depression among overweight and obese adults

BACKGROUND

The use of specific dietary patterns to alleviate depressive symptoms has gained increasing recognition. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) is a crucial criterion for assessing antioxidant diets. We examined the relationship between CDAI and depression among overweight and obese adults through a cross-sectional study conducted in the United States.

METHODS

We used weighted multivariate logistic regression models with subgroup analysis to study the relationship between CDAI and depression. Generalized additive models were used to determine whether there was a nonlinear association between them. We developed a two-piece linear regression model to calculate the inflection point utilizing a recursive strategy.

RESULTS

After adjusting for confounding variables, the odds ratios (ORs; 95 % CI) for the correlation between CDAI and depression were 0.75 (0.67, 0.84). A saturation effect emerged for the overweight group, following which we calculated the inflection point for the overweight population, which displayed ORs (95 % CI) of 0.62 (0.47, 0.80) before the inflection point of 0.83 and the ORs (95 % CI) of 1.01 (0.77, 1.31) after 0.83. The interaction was statistically significant in the sex stratification of the obese population.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study highlighted a negative association between CDAI and depression among overweight and obese adults. Saturation effects and sex differences were observed in the overweight population.

The Association between Oxidative Balance Score and Urinary Levels of 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine among Japanese Adults

The oxidative balance score (OBS), wherein higher OBSs indicate lower oxidative stress, was designed to assess a composite measure of multiple pro-oxidant and antioxidant effects on an individual's oxidative stress status. This study aimed to evaluate whether OBSs were inversely associated with urinary levels of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG)-an oxidative stress marker-among Japanese adults. This cross-sectional study was based on data obtained during 2010-2012. Overall, 7552 participants from the J-MICC Study Saga who answered a self-administered food frequency questionnaire were recruited for the final analysis. OBSs were calculated from 11 pro-oxidant and antioxidant lifestyle factors, including dietary intake, physical activity, and alcohol and smoking status. Urinary 8-OHdG values were corrected by creatinine level (ng/mg creatinine). Our findings revealed a higher total OBS was significantly associated with lower urinary 8-OHdG/creatinine levels after adjustment for covariates in men and women (p for trend < 0.01 in both sexes). We performed a multiple regression analysis of the association between OBSs and urinary 8-OHdG/creatinine levels stratified by age, body mass index (BMI), and menopausal status and found consistent negative associations in most groups for both sexes. No significant differences in the 60-64 age group for women (standardized β = -0.09, p = 0.13) or BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 for men (standardized β = -0.18, p = 0.17) were observed. A higher OBS had a strong inverse association with urinary 8-OHdG/creatinine levels in men and women among Japanese adults. The OBS might be a useful tool for evaluating the roles of oxidative stress-related lifestyle factors, including diet.

Association between the composite dietary antioxidant index and chronic kidney disease: evidence from NHANES 2011-2018

Objectives: There is growing evidence that antioxidant-rich diets protect against chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI), an important measure of an antioxidant diet, and CKD has received little attention. Therefore, here we investigated the relationship between the CDAI and CKD through a cross-sectional analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 data. Methods: The CDAI was calculated based on the intake of six dietary antioxidants. A survey-based multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to analyze the independent relationship between the CDAI and CKD. Weighted multivariate regression and subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between the CDAI and CKD. Results: A total of 6874 NHANES participants represented 181.9 million non-institutionalized US residents (mean age, 46.43 ± 0.38 years; 49.87% female; 40.62% non-Hispanic white; 20.24% non-Hispanic black; and 13.94% Mexican American). The weighted linear regression model with full adjustment for confounding variables was -0.0155 (-0.0417, 0.0107) for Q2 (P for trend <0.0001), -0.0052 (-0.0346, 0.0242) for Q3 (P for trend <0.0001), and -0.0305 (-0.0491, -0.0120) for Q4 (P for trend = 0.0094) upon comparison with the lowest quartile of the CDAI. None of the interactions in any subgroup analysis were statistically significant except for individuals with a history of diabetes or the aged population (≥60 years) (P for interaction <0.05). Conclusions: The CDAI was positively associated with a lower prevalence of CKD in adults in the United States. Further large-scale prospective studies are required to analyze the role of the CDAI in CKD.

Relationship between Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index and Aging

BACKGROUND

Numerous studies have demonstrated a close relationship between antioxidant-rich diets and comorbidities as well as mortality. However, the relationship between such diets and aging remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and aging.

METHODS

All participants were from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2010. Phenotypic age was calculated using a formula and subtracted from the chronological age to determine the aging. When the phenotypic age exceeded the chronological age, it was considered as aging. A weighted logistic regression model was employed to explore the relationship between CDAI and aging. Restricted cubic splines (RCSs) were used to examine the potential nonlinear relationship between them. Subgroup analysis and joint analysis were conducted to explore the effect of modifiers in these relationships.

RESULTS

A total of 19,212 participants (weighted: 165,285,442 individuals) were included in this study. The weighted logistic regression model showed a significant correlation between CDAI and the risk of aging (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.84-0.96). RCS analysis revealed an L-shaped dose-response relationship between CDAI and the risk of aging. Subgroup analysis indicated that the association between CDAI and aging was more pronounced in middle-aged individuals and non-smokers. The joint analysis demonstrated that although smoking accelerated aging among participants, a high CDAI diet could still offset these damages.

CONCLUSIONS

The association between high CDAI and reduced risk of aging is particularly significant in young and middle-aged individuals and non-smokers. Consuming foods rich in CDAI components may potentially lower the risk of aging.

Dose-response relationship between dietary antioxidant intake and diabetic kidney disease in the US adults with diabetes

AIM

The effects of dietary antioxidants on numerous diseases have been widely studied. However, the evidence regarding composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in individuals with diabetes is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the associations of CDAI with DKD and mortality in adults with diabetes mellitus (DM).

METHODS

This study utilized data from 5676 adult DM participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of 2007-2018. The study followed up on death outcomes by linking the data to records from the National Death Index until December 31, 2019. CDAI was evaluated using a well-established method that included six food-sourced antioxidants derived from 24-h dietary recall: selenium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids. The regression models were used to estimate the relationships of CDAI with DKD and mortality in diabetic individuals.

RESULTS

The weighted mean CDAI level for the 5676 participants, which represented 31.36 million noninstitutionalized residents of the US, was 0.33. Based on CDAI quartiles, participants were classified into four groups. CDAI levels were significantly associated with age, gender, race, physical activity, estimated glomerular filtration rate and the prevalence of albuminuria, DKD and hyperuricemia. DKD occurred in 36.44% of diabetic participants, and higher CDAI levels were independently associated with a lower risk of DKD (OR 0.74, 95%CI 0.59-0.94, p for trend = 0.004) in diabetic individuals after multivariate adjustment. During a median follow-up of 67 months (38-104 months), a total of 1065 (15.80%) diabetic individuals died from all causes. Diabetic individuals with higher CDAI levels (Q4) demonstrated a lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR 0.67, 95% CI: 0.52-0.86, p for trend = 0.01) after adjusting for age, gender and race.

CONCLUSIONS

Maintaining an adequate antioxidant diet, as reflected in higher CDAI levels, may lower the risk of DKD and mortality in diabetic individuals. These findings offer a promising approach to managing diabetes and highlight the potential of food-based antioxidants as a preventative measure. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanism linking dietary antioxidants and DKD and mortality in diabetic individuals.

Composite dietary antioxidant index was negatively associated with the prevalence of diabetes independent of cardiovascular diseases

AIM

The association between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and diabetes remains unknown. Our study was to investigate the association of CDAI with diabetes.

METHODS

A total of 11,956 participants were enrolled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The CDAI was calculated from the intake of six dietary antioxidants. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to explore the associations between CDAI and the prevalence of diabetes and glycemic index. Non-linear associations were explored using restricted cubic splines.

RESULTS

In the multivariate logistic regression model, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of CDAI associating with obesity was 0.98 (0.97-1.00; p = 0.033). Compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile was related to 0.84-fold risk of diabetes (0.71-0.99; p = 0.035). However, CDAI was not independently associated with fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c.

CONCLUSION

CDAI was negatively associated with diabetes and the relationship was independent of other traditional risk factors.

Association between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in Postmenopausal Women: A Cross-Sectional Study of NHANES Data, 2013-2018

The relationship between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) levels and the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in postmenopausal women is unknown. In total, 3109 women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2018 were included in this cross-sectional study. We evaluated the association between CDAI levels and the risk of ASCVD by using three logistic regression models and restricted cubic splines. A stratified analysis and sensitivity analysis were also conducted. The restricted cubic splines exhibited an L-shaped dose-response association between CDAI levels and the ASCVD risk. Logistic regression analysis found that CDAI levels were negatively associated with the occurrence of ASCVD. The ORs associated with a per-SD increase in CDAI were 0.67 (95% CI: 0.51-0.88) for ASCVD risk. Similarly, women in the group with high CDAI levels were less likely to have ASCVD (OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.50-0.98) compared to those in the group with low CDAI levels. When the CDAI levels were divided into quartiles, it was found that the ORs for ASCVD with CDAI levels in Q2 (-1.04-1.11), Q3 (1.11-3.72), and Q4 (3.72-43.87) were 0.63 (0.44, 0.90), 0.64 (0.42, 0.94), and 0.51 (0.27, 0.97), respectively, compared to those with CDAI levels in Q1 (-6.83--1.04). In addition, age, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and smoking behaviors acted as potential modifiers, and ORs were more significant in women aged 40-69 years, in individuals with low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and in smokers (p for interaction <0.05). These findings may offer valuable insights into the role of CDAI levels in the development of ASCVD among postmenopausal women.

Association of the composite dietary antioxidant index with bone mineral density in the United States general population: data from NHANES 2005-2010

INTRODUCTION

There is evidence that individual antioxidants may increase bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with low BMD. However, the association between overall dietary antioxidant intake and BMD is unclear. The objective of this study was to examine how overall dietary antioxidant intake is related to BMD.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 14,069 people participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2005 and 2010. Dietary Antioxidant Index (DAI) was calculated from the intake of vitamins A, C, E, zinc, selenium, and magnesium, which indicates a nutritional tool to assess the overall antioxidant properties of the diet. The correlation between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and BMD was examined using multivariate logistic regression models. In addition to fitting smoothing curves, we fitted generalized additive models as well. Furthermore, to ensure data stability and avoid confounding factors, subgroup analysis was also conducted on gender and body mass index (BMI).

RESULTS

A significant association was demonstrated by the study between CDAI and total spine BMD (β = 0.001, 95% CI 0-0.001, P = 0.00039). And just like that, CDAI was positively correlated with femoral neck (β = 0.003, 95% CI 0.003-0.004, P < 0.00001) and trochanter (β = 0.004, 95% CI 0.003-0.004, P < 0.00001). In the gender subgroup analysis, CDAI maintained a strong positive correlation with femoral neck and trochanter BMD in males and females. Nevertheless, the link with total spine BMD was only observed in males. In addition, in the subgroup analysis stratified by BMI, CDAI showed a significantly positive relation to BMD of the femoral neck and trochanter in each group. However, the significant relationship between CDAI and BMD of the total spine was only maintained when BMI was above 30 kg/m2.

CONCLUSION

This study found that CDAI correlated positively with femoral neck, trochanter, and total spine BMD. This suggests that intake of a diet rich in antioxidants can reduce the risk of low bone mass and osteoporosis.

The reverse association of dietary antioxidant index with osteoporosis in postmenopausal iranian women: A case-control study

Background

Osteoporosis, a prevalent bone malady, is prevalent in Iran. Several studies have represented the role of dietary antioxidants on osteoporosis. The dietary antioxidant index (DAI) is a valid and reliable index, which indicates a comprehensive view of dietary antioxidant capacity. This study aimed to survey the relationship of the DAI with the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women in Iran. This research aimed to examine the association between the DAI and the risk of osteoporosis among postmenopausal women in Iran.

Materials and Methods

In this case-control study, 440 postmenopausal women (220 cases and 220 controls) were enrolled. The dietary intake of contributors was evaluated using a 147-item food frequency questionnaire. To estimate the DAI, the amount of six antioxidant micronutrients such as Vitamins A, C, and E, selenium, manganese, and zinc was standardized. Then, the DAI was estimated by collecting the standardized consumption of these antioxidant micronutrients.

Results

Our findings represented the participants in the first (crude odds ratio [OR] = 1.79, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-2.85, P = 0.013) and second (crude OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.01-2.55, P = 0.043) tertiles of the DAI scores had significantly higher odds of osteoporosis compared to those in the third one; while after modifying for confounding factors, this significant reverse relationship was observed just between women in the first and third tertiles of the DAI scores (adjusted OR = 1.90, 95% CI: 1.34-3.18, P = 0.015).

Conclusion

The consequence of this study suggested that adherence to a diet rich in antioxidant compounds may have protective effects against osteoporosis.

Chinese Dietary Indices and Glioma: New Insights of a Case-Control Study in the Chinese Population

Identifying modifiable factors in primary prevention strategies is a typical goal of glioma epidemiology. Among many glioma risk factors, diet was always considered as one. Most of the relevant studies thus far were concentrated on the West. It was crucial to investigate the connection between the Chinese diet and gliomas given the stark variations between western and eastern diets. A food frequency questionnaire including 114 items was used to investigate the food intake of the study subjects. The Chinese Dietary Quality Index (CDQI), the Chinese Dietary Balance Index (CDBI), the Dietary Antioxidant Index (DAI), the Dietary Inflammation Index (DII), and the Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) were calculated based on the data provided by the food frequency questionnaire to evaluate dietary quality, dietary balance, dietary antioxidants, dietary inflammation and adherence to the Chinese dietary guidelines in 506 glioma patients and 506 controls, respectively. After adjusting covariates, CHEI (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.88-0.93) and DAI (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.54-0.70) were correlated to a reduced glioma risk, and CDBI-based undernutrition (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.06-1.12) and overnutrition (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.09-1.20) and DII (OR = 2.20, 95% CI: 1.81-2.68) were correlated to an elevated glioma risk. Moreover, restrictive cubic spline analysis showed that there were significant nonlinear dose-response relationships between CHEI, CDBI, DAI, DII, and glioma. Therefore, adhering to the Chinese dietary guidelines was connected with a lower glioma risk, and undernutrition and overnutrition in the Chinese diet were associated with an increased risk of glioma.

Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index Is Negatively Associated with Hyperuricemia in US Adults: An Analysis of NHANES 2007-2018

Hyperuricemia and its complications are severe risks to human health. Dietary intervention is considered an essential part of the management of hyperuricemia. Studies have reported that the intake of antioxidants has a positive effect on hyperuricemia. Here, we collected data from 8761 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for this analysis. Daily intakes of vitamins A, C, and E; manganese; selenium; and zinc were calculated as the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI). The participants were divided into four groups (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) according to the CDAI. Univariate analysis was used to assess the association of covariates with hyperuricemia. The association between the CDAI and hyperuricemia was evaluated using multinomial logistic regression, and its stability was determined by stratified analysis. Our results revealed that the CDAI has a significant negative association with hyperuricemia (Q2: 0.81 (0.69, 0.95); Q3: 0.75 (0.62, 0.90); Q4: 0.65 (0.51, 0.82); P < 0.01). The results of stratified analysis emphasize that this association between CDAI and hyperuricemia is stable. In conclusion, this study suggested a negative association between the CDAI and hyperuricemia.

Associations between composite dietary antioxidant index and estimated 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk among U.S. adults

Background

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains the leading cause of death and disability both in U.S. and worldwide. Antioxidants have been proved critical in mitigating the development of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to investigate the associations between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and estimated 10-year ASCVD risk among U.S. adults.

Methods

Data extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. A total of 10,984 adults aged 18 years and above were included in this study. CDAI was calculated based on the dietary intake reported in their 24-h recall interviews. The estimated 10-year ASCVD risk was calculated via Pooled Cohort Equations (PCE).

Results

After adjusting potential confounders, it was indicated that CDAI score was negatively correlated with 10-year ASCVD risk (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95-0.99). Stratify CDAI score by quartile, results showed that participants in the second, third, and fourth quartiles had lower ASCVD odds ratio (Q2: OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.69-1.09; Q3: OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.62-0.98; Q4: OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.59-0.94) than those in the first quartile (Q1, lowest CDAI score group), which was confirmed by the trend test as well (p < 0.05). Subgroup analyses stratified by sex, age, race/ethnicity, and smoking status did not show significant effect modification.

Conclusion

Higher dietary antioxidants intake is associated with lower ASCVD risk among U.S. adults, for which policymakers and healthcare professionals may consider increasing the consumption of antioxidant-rich foods as a preventive strategy for ASCVD.

Associations of oxidative balance score and visceral adiposity index with risk of ischaemic heart disease: a cross-sectional study of NHANES, 2005-2018

OBJECTIVE

Evidence on the association of oxidative balance score (OBS) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) with risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) is limited. We aimed to explore the association of OBS and VAI with risk of IHD, and then examined their potential interactive effects.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

SETTING

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 27 867 individuals aged more than 20 years were included in this study.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES

Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to estimate ORs and 95% CIs for the associations of OBS and VAI with risk of IHD, including coronary heart disease (CHD), heart attack and angina pectoris.

RESULTS

Compared with those in the first quintile, participants with highest quintile of OBS had decreased risk of IHD (OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.50, 0.69), CHD (OR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.52, 0.80), heart attack (OR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.66) and angina pectoris (OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.48, 0.82); meanwhile, those with highest quintile of VAI had increased risk of IHD (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.22, 1.74), CHD (OR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.67), heart attack (OR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.94) and angina pectoris (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.87). Furthermore, we observed a stronger association between OBS and risk of IHD among participants with VAI ≥1.73 (OR: 0.50, 95% CI: 0.40, 0.62).

CONCLUSION

Our study found the negative association between OBS and risk of IHD, and positive association between VAI and risk of IHD. In addition, we found the interactive effects between VAI and OBS on the risk of IHD, underlining the importance of OBS in IHD prevention among participants with high VAI level.

Association of dietary total antioxidant capacity and its distribution across three meals with all-cause, cancer, and non-cancer mortality among cancer survivors: the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2018

The effect of the antioxidant capacity of diet and its distribution across three meals on mortality risk among cancer patients remains unexplored. We aimed to prospectively investigate the association of dietary total antioxidant capacity (DAC) and its distribution across three meals with all-cause, cancer, and noncancer mortality among cancer survivors. We included 5,009 patients with cancer from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 1999 and 2018. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) was estimated using the survey-weighted Cox proportional hazards model. During a median follow-up of 7.9 years, 1811 deaths, including 575 cancer-related deaths, were recorded. Among cancer survivors, compared with participants in the lowest quartile of total DAC from three meals, those in the highest quartile had a 24% decreased risk of noncancer mortality (aHR = 0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60-0.92), but not of all-cause and cancer mortality (each p trend >0.1). However, this association became insignificant for total DAC after excluding dinner DAC. In addition, higher dinner DAC rather than breakfast or lunch DAC was associated with a 21% lower risk of all-cause mortality (aHR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.65-0.98) and 28% lower risk of noncancer mortality (aHR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.57-0.90). Similar associations were found for ΔDAC (dinner DAC - breakfast DAC) with noncancer mortality (aHR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.38-0.83), but DAC was not associated with cancer mortality (p trend >0.3). Among cancer survivors, total DAC from three meals was associated with reduced noncancer mortality, with the primary effect attributable to increased DAC intake from dinner. Our findings emphasize that DAC consumption from dinner should be advocated to reduce mortality risk in cancer survivors.
