Abstract
Although environmental exposure to toxic metals and metalloids is linked with the risk of cardiovascular diseases, the evidence is limited in the elderly. We evaluated the associations between 12 plasma metal levels including aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), strontium (Sr), lead (Pb), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), cuprum (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), and selenium (Se) with prevalence of hypertension in the elderly Chinese population. In this study, stratified cluster sampling was conducted among elderly residents in three communities in Gansu province from June to July 2023, with a total of 330 participants included. The concentrations of metals in whole plasma were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to evaluate the dose-response relationship between plasma metal levels and hypertension, with all metal concentrations log-transformed. We applied quantile g-computation (QG-comp) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models to examine the associations of both individual metals and metal mixtures with hypertension. After multivariable adjustments, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hypertension associated with the highest quartile of metal concentrations compared to the lowest quartile were as follows: 4.20 (1.36, 12.98) for Sr, 3.95 (1.30, 12.03) for V, 3.43 (1.09, 10.78) for Cr, 3.28 (1.16, 9.28) for Cu, 3.28 (1.13, 9.52) for Zn, and 2.87 (0.94, 8.74) for As. Using BKMR and restricted cubic spline analysis, we found that exposure to metal mixtures was positively associated with an increased risk of hypertension, with Ni, Cr, As, and V being the primary contributing factors. In addition, Zn, Ni, and Sr were significantly and positively correlated with hypertension, while plasma titanium levels were negatively associated with hypertension development. These results suggest a complex interaction between various metals and the risk of hypertension in the elderly. Exposure to metal mixtures was positively associated with hypertension risk in elderly Chinese adults, with Ni, Cr, As, and V as key contributors. In addition, Zn, Ni, and Sr are significantly associated with an increased risk of hypertension, while Ti was positively associated with its development.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome, as a complex pathological condition, is caused by a series of pathogenic factors and has become a global public health challenge. Anthocyanins, a natural water-soluble flavonoid pigment, have attracted much attention due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer biological activities. After ingestion, a majority of anthocyanins is not directly absorbed but rather reaches the colon. Hence, the exertion of their biological benefits is closely intertwined with the role played by gut microbiota. In this review, we introduce the pathogenesis and intervention methods of metabolic syndrome, as well as the interaction between anthocyanins and gut microbiota. We also discuss the therapeutic potential of anthocyanins through gut microbiota in addressing a range of metabolic syndrome conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, osteoporosis, and cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study utilized large-scale population data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to elucidate the relationship between the Klotho protein and metabolic syndrome along with its components. We further investigated the possible mediating effect of inflammation on these relationships. Our objective was to identify biomarkers for risk stratification and potential therapeutic targets for metabolic syndrome. METHODS This study enrolled 13,119 participants aged 40-79 years, spanning five NHANES cycles from 2007 to 2016, with complete information on metabolic syndrome and the Klotho protein. The definition of metabolic syndrome followed the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III. Survey-weighted logistic regression and subgroup analysis were used to explore the associations between serum Klotho protein levels and metabolic syndrome, along with its components. Mediation analysis was performed to investigate the mediating effects of inflammation-related markers, including white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and the monocyte-to-HDL ratio (MHR), with the aim of elucidating how the Klotho protein influences the onset and progression of metabolic syndrome. RESULTS The study participants had an average age of 56.06 years (95% CI: 55.76-56.37), with a Klotho protein concentration of 798.10 pg/ml (95% CI: 656.50-980.50) and a 43.77% prevalence of metabolic syndrome (n = 5742). In the crude model, Klotho was negatively correlated with metabolic syndrome and its components, including central obesity, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia. After adjusting for all confounding factors, Klotho was demonstrated to be negatively associated only with metabolic syndrome (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.70-0.97), hypertension (OR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.70-0.98), and hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 0.78, 95% CI: 0.67-0.91). Subgroup and interaction analyses revealed significant interactions between age, sex, race/ethnicity, body mass index, and Klotho. Additionally, mediation analysis demonstrated that leukocytes, neutrophils and monocytes accounted for 34.78%, 31.91% and 7.13%, respectively, of the associations between Klotho and metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSION The serum concentration of Klotho protein was negatively associated with metabolic syndrome, with the relationship being partly mediated by systemic immune inflammation. The findings of this research revealed that the Klotho protein may be a valuable biomarker for risk stratification and a potential therapeutic target for metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The objective of this systematic review (SR) with meta-analysis (MA) was to identify the dietary patterns of the population, regarding ethnicity and gender, and their association with the metabolic syndrome and its risk factors (MetS-RF). The literature search was performed using Medline, Scopus, Ebsco, SciELO, and BVS databases. Studies with adult participants that identified dietary patterns associated with MetS-RF were included. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95%CI were calculated using a random-effect, generic inverse variance method. Statistical heterogeneity and publication bias were explored. The dietary patterns were classified as healthy or unhealthy. Studies were categorized into three groups: Women (all ethnicities), Afro-descendant (men and women), and General Population (both genders and ethnicity). Among the articles found (n=8,496), 22 integrated the SR and 11 the MA. The adherence to the healthy dietary pattern was negatively associated (protective factor) with MetS-RF only in the General Population (OR=0.77; 95%CI: 0.61-0.98). Nevertheless, the unhealthy dietary pattern was associated with the higher prevalence of MetS-RF in all analyzed groups. It was concluded that an unhealthy eating pattern increases the chances of SM-RF in adults, regardless of gender and ethnicity.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) occurs from excessive reactive oxygen species or a deficiency of antioxidants-primarily endogenous glutathione (GSH). There are many illnesses, from acute and post-COVID-19, diabetes, myocardial infarction to Alzheimer's disease, that are associated with OS. These dissimilar illnesses are, in order, viral infections, metabolic disorders, ischemic events, and neurodegenerative disorders. Evidence is presented that in many illnesses, (1) OS is an early initiator and significant promotor of their progressive pathophysiologic processes, (2) early reduction of OS may prevent later serious and irreversible complications, (3) GSH deficiency is associated with OS, (4) GSH can likely reduce OS and restore adaptive physiology, (5) effective administration of GSH can be accomplished with a novel nano-product, the GSH/cyclodextrin (GC) complex. OS is an overlooked pathological process of many illnesses. Significantly, with the GSH/cyclodextrin (GC) complex, therapeutic administration of GSH is now available to reduce OS. Finally, rigorous prospective studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of this therapeutic approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the role of elevated serum ferritin levels in the onset, pathological progression and prognosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has been rapidly increasing worldwide. Despite extensive research on the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a lack of sufficient clinical research on the relationship between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and serum ferritin levels remains. METHODS We analysed 968 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who underwent liver ultrasound examination and had their serum ferritin levels measured. The presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and advanced liver fibrosis was determined through abdominal ultrasound examination and the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score. RESULTS Compared to that in the non-nonalcoholic fatty liver disease group, the presence of hyperferritinemia was significantly more common in the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease group (83.3 vs. 56.3%, p=0.005). When patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease were stratified by the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score, those with advanced liver fibrosis exhibited a higher prevalence of hyperferritinemia (56.3, 78.9, and 88.9% for none, simple steatosis, and advanced fibrosis, respectively; p for trend=0.002). In multivariate logistic regression, liver fibrosis was independently associated with hyperferritinemia (odds ratio [OR] 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18-2.02; p=0.014), and this association remained significant in male patients after adjusting for other risk factors (OR 2.66; 95% CI 1.43-5.48; p=0.026). CONCLUSION Identifying nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients at a risk of developing nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and advanced fibrosis is crucial for implementing timely interventions and improving patient outcomes. This study highlights the potential utility of serum ferritin levels as a serum biomarker for identifying nonalcoholic steatohepatitis patients and those at a risk of late-stage fibrosis, particularly in male patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of several disease conditions together with high glucose triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, lower high-density lipoprotein level, and large waist circumference. About 400 million people worldwide, one-third of the Euro-American population and 27% Chinese population over age 50 have it. microRNAs, an abundant novel class of endogenous small, non-coding RNAs in eukaryotic cells, act as negative controllers of gene expression by promoting either degradation/translational repression of target messenger RNA. More than 2000 microRNAs in the human genome have been identified and they are implicated in various biological & pathophysiological processes, including glucose homeostasis, inflammatory response, and angiogenesis. Destruction of microRNAs has a crucial role in the pathogenesis of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Recently the discovery of circulating microRNAs in human serum may help to promote metabolic crosstalk between organs and serves as a novel approach for the identification of various diseases, like Type 2 diabetes & atherosclerosis. In this review, we will discuss the most recent and up-to-date research on the pathophysiology and histopathology of metabolic syndrome besides their historical background and epidemiological highlight. As well as search the methodologies employed in this field of research and the potential role of microRNAs as novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for metabolic syndrome in the human body. Furthermore, the significance of microRNAs in promising strategies, like stem cell therapy, which holds enormous promise for regenerative medicine in the treatment of metabolic disorders will also be discussed.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS) are widespread organic pollutants with endocrine-disrupting effects on human health, but the association of PFAS exposure with metabolic syndrome remains conflicting. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES) program was utilized to evaluate the association of individual PFAS exposure and metabolic disorders and further determined the joint effect of PFAS co-exposures. 13921 participants and five PFAS exposures(PFHxS, MPAH, PFDE, PFNA, and PFUA) were included for analysis. The association between individual PFAS and metabolic syndrome varied in the specific PFAS and the specific metabolic disorder examined. PFHxS was negatively associated with obesity(Q4; OR = 0.75; P < 0.001), but positively associated with hyperlipidemia (Q3; OR = 1.2; P = 0.013). PFUA was negatively associated with obesity (Q4; OR = 0.6; P < 0.001), hyperlipidemia (Q3; OR = 0.85; P = 0.03), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD, Q4; OR = 0.64; P = 0.015), but positively associated with hyperglycemia(Q3; OR = 1.27; P = 0.004). Furthermore, PFAS co-exposures were negatively associated with obesity(OR = 0.63; P < 0.001) and NAFLD(OR = 0.85; P = 0.021), and positively associated with hyperlipidemia(OR = 1.05; P = 0.022), but not significantly associated with hyperglycemia or hypertension. Overall, there was a negative association between PFAS co-exposures and metabolic severity score(β = -0.15; P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis stratified by gender and obesity consistently showed the negative association of PFAS co-exposures with metabolic severity score, and the positive association with hyperlipidemia. However, subgroup analysis showed a negative association with NAFLD in females but not in males, and a negative association with hyperglycemia in the obesity group, but not in the non-obesity group. Collectively, our study showed a negative association of PFAS co-exposures with metabolic syndrome severity score, but did not support a consistent association between PFAS co-exposures and individual components of metabolic syndrome. Additionally, there were gender-specific as well as BMI-specific differences in these associations. Further studies are needed to rule out the reverse causality and clarify the relationship of PFAS co-exposures with the specific metabolic disorder.

Abstract
The use of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for treating malignant conditions in children has increased over the past five decades, leading to a growing population of long-term survivors.This population of childhood HCT survivors faces increased risks of adverse medical effects due to cancer treatments, including adverse cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors such as metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance. but the impact of exposure to HCT preparative conditioning regimen has not been clearly delineated. These risk factors, including obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance (IR), are significant contributors to premature cardiovascular disease and represent a leading cause of non-relapse deaths in childhood cancer and HCT survivors. This study aimed to assess the early development of CVD risk factors and their relationship to insulin resistance in a large population of pediatric and young adult HCT survivors of childhood hematologic malignancies. The study compared their cardiovascular risk profiles, insulin resistance (measured by euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp studies), and body composition (determined by dual X-ray absorptiometry - DXA) with a cohort of sibling controls. We enrolled 151 HCT recipients (26.36 ±0.90 years at study enrollment; time since HCT of 2.6-31.5 years) and 92 sibling controls to complete at cardiovascular risk assessment including insulin sensitivity by hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp, anthropometry, body composition by dual X-ray absorptiometry, blood pressure, and serum biomarkers. We used linear models to test for mean differences in all continuous outcomes between survivors and siblings, accounting for intra-family correlations with generalized estimating equations. Recipients of HCT were found to have lower insulin sensitivity and more likely to have adverse CVD risk factors in comparison to their healthy siblings. Significantly higher percent fat mass and visceral adipose tissue, and significantly lower lean body mass were noted in HCT recipients than sibling controls despite having a similar body mass index between the two groups. Total body irradiation in the conditioning regimen was one of the strongest factors associated with lower insulin sensitivity, dyslipidemia and abnormal body composition leading to sarcopenic obesity. This study reveals that pediatric and young adult HCT survivors are more insulin resistant and have a higher prevalence of adverse cardiovascular risk factors compared to sibling controls. The presence of cardiovascular risk factors at a relatively young age raises concerns about an escalating trajectory of cardiovascular disease in this population. Therefore, regular monitoring of HCT survivors for cardiometabolic risk factors and early intervention will be crucial for preventing cardiovascular-related complications in the future. The findings underscore the importance of survivorship care for pediatric and young adult HCT survivors, with a focus on managing cardiovascular risk factors and promoting a healthy lifestyle to mitigate long-term adverse effects. Early identification and targeted interventions can significantly improve the long-term health outcomes of this vulnerable population, reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease and related complications.

Abstract
(1) Background: Clinical results on the effects of excess sugar consumption on insulin sensitivity are conflicting, possibly due to differences in sugar type and the insulin sensitivity index (ISI) assessed. Therefore, we compared the effects of consuming four different sugars on insulin sensitivity indices derived from oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT). (2) Methods: Young adults consumed fructose-, glucose-, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)-, sucrose-, or aspartame-sweetened beverages (SB) for 2 weeks. Participants underwent OGTT before and at the end of the intervention. Fasting glucose and insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), glucose and insulin area under the curve, Surrogate Hepatic Insulin Resistance Index, Matsuda ISI, Predicted M ISI, and Stumvoll Index were assessed. Outcomes were analyzed to determine: (1) effects of the five SB; (2) effects of the proportions of fructose and glucose in all SB. (3) Results: Fructose-SB and the fructose component in mixed sugars negatively affected outcomes that assess hepatic insulin sensitivity, while glucose did not. The effects of glucose-SB and the glucose component in mixed sugar on muscle insulin sensitivity were more negative than those of fructose. (4) Conclusion: the effects of consuming sugar-SB on insulin sensitivity varied depending on type of sugar and ISI index because outcomes assessing hepatic insulin sensitivity were negatively affected by fructose, and outcomes assessing muscle insulin sensitivity were more negatively affected by glucose.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A positive association between benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)/lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) was reported in several studies, but studies from Asia often showed conflicting results. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records were obtained from a health promotion center database between 2021 and 2022. Men without a history of treatment for LUTS were evaluated using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS), transrectal ultrasonography. RESULTS Of 1345 individuals, 603 (44.8%) had MetS. Older age, higher IPSS values, higher prevalence rates of BPH and overactive bladder, higher triiodothyronine, and lower testosterone and sex-hormone binding globulin were observed in individuals with MetS than in individuals without MetS. The severity of LUTS significantly increased in the individuals with MetS (p = .002). In individuals with MetS, age, HbA1c, and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) were associated with IPSS. For OABSS, age, HbA1c, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), coronary artery occlusive disease, and CVD were identified as predictors. CONCLUSIONS We confirmed the positive correlation between MetS and BPH/LUTS in Korean. Factors including TSH and atherosclerosis affected LUTS in individuals with MetS. These findings suggested a potential role of thyroid hormones and atherosclerosis in the etiology and treatment of BPH/LUTS in patients with MetS.

Abstract
Background and aims Combined associations of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and hemoglobin (Hb) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) have not been assessed yet. The current study investigated the independent and combined relationships between ALT, Hb, and MetS in the elderly. Methods The 37,966 elderly participants aged 65 years and older were recruited from community centers in Qingdao, China. The sampled elderly population visited the health centers once a year where they were offered a free health checkup. Based on a combination of ALT and Hb levels categorized by tertile, participants were grouped into nine groups (Group 1-9). Logistic regression models were used to analyze the individual and combined associations of ALT and Hb with MetS. Results ALT and Hb were both independently related to MetS in both genders. With the elevation of ALT or Hb levels, risks for MetS and its components increased. Compared to the reference group (the 1st tertiles of both ALT and Hb levels), respective odds ratio of combined ALT and Hb for MetS in Group 2-9 ranged from 1.32-3.38 and 1.14-2.31 in men and women after adjusting for age, sex, education, married status, current smoking, current drinking, physical activity, and diet habit. Conclusion ALT and Hb were both independently related to MetS and its components. Combined ALT and Hb levels could increase risks of MetS and its components than an elevation in ALT or Hb alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies support an association between obesity, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and periodontitis. Still, understanding of the effects of low-grade inflammation in obese subjects on periodontitis and influence of MetS remains incomplete. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to explore the association between obesity related variables and periodontitis, and assess if MetS is a risk indicator for periodontitis in a sample of obese adults. METHODS The study sample comprised 52 adults with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥ 30 kg/m2 referred for obesity therapy at the Obesity Centre at Haukeland University Hospital (HUH), Bergen, Norway. The subjects had prior to enrolment completed a 5-month lifestyle intervention course as part of a 2-year managing program. According to the revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) classification of MetS, 38 subjects were recruited to the MetS group and 14 subjects to the non-MetS group. Medical data including peripheral blood samples were obtained from records at HUH at the time of enrolment. Probing depth, clinical attachment level, tooth mobility, furcation involvement, bleeding on probing (BoP) were recorded and intraoral bitewings evaluated at a full-mouth periodontal examination. Associations between risk variables for obesity/MetS and periodontitis were explored using linear and logistic regression models. RESULTS In the present sample 79% of the subjects were diagnosed with periodontitis. The prevalence of stage III/IV periodontitis was 42.9% in the non-MetS group vs. 36.8% in the MetS group (p = 0.200). In the non-MetS group 29.8% of the sites displayed BoP vs. 23.5% in the MetS group (p = 0.048). For stage III/IV periodontitis, the effect of age appeared to be significant for obesity related variables and MetS (p = 0.006, p = 0.002, respectively). None of the other analyses showed significant association with the outcome variables. CONCLUSION In the present sample of obese subjects, periodontitis occurred independently of MetS. Reaching a certain BMI level, suggested association between MetS and periodontitis might be non-significant due to the dominating impact of obesity related variables undermining the effect of other systemic factors. TRIAL REGISTRATION The principal clinical trial, entitled "Obesity and Oral Diseases", was prospectively registered in ClinicalTrials.gov with registration NCT04602572 (20.10.2020).

Abstract
Obesity is a chronic disease with high prevalence and associated comorbidities, making it a growing global concern. These comorbidities include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, ventilatory dysfunction, arthrosis, venous and lymphatic circulation diseases, depression, and others, which have a negative impact on health and increase morbidity and mortality. GLP-1 agonists, used to treat type 2 diabetes, have been shown to be effective in promoting weight loss in preclinical and clinical studies. This review summarizes numerous studies conducted on the main drugs in the GLP-1 agonists class, outlining the maximum achievable weight loss. Our aim is to emphasize the active role and main outcomes of GLP-1 agonists in promoting weight loss, as well as in improving hyperglycemia, insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, cardio-metabolic, and renal protection. We highlight the pleiotropic effects of these medications, along with their indications, contraindications, and precautions for both diabetic and non-diabetic patients, based on long-term follow-up studies.

Abstract
Objectives The association between coffee consumption and the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains inconsistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between coffee intake and components of MetS. Method A cross-sectional survey including 1,719 adults was conducted in Guangdong, China. Data on age, gender, education level, marriage status, body mass index (BMI), current smoking and drinking status and breakfast habit, coffee consumption type, and daily servings were derived based on 2-day, 24-h recall. MetS were assessed according to the International Diabetes Federation definition. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to examine the association between the coffee consumption type, daily servings, and the components of MetS. Results Regardless of the coffee type, compared with non-coffee consumers, coffee consumers had higher odds ratios (ORs) of the elevated fasting blood glucose (FBG) in both men [OR: 3.590; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 2.891-4.457] and women (OR: 3.590; 95% CI: 2.891-4.457). In women, the risk of elevated blood pressure (BP) was 0.553 times (OR: 0.553; 95% CI: 0.372-0.821, P = 0.004) for people who drank total coffee > 1 serving/day than for non-coffee drinkers. Conclusion In conclusion, regardless of type, coffee intake is associated with an increased prevalence of FBG in both men and women, but has a protective effect on hypertension only in women.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the prototypical autoimmune disease considered as an independent risk factor for mortality by cardiovascular disease. Currently, uric acid is described as a novel biomarker associated with cardiometabolic risk. However, nutritional and serum determinants that influence hyperuricemia development in autoimmune diseases have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to assess the nutritional, biochemical, and cardiometabolic determinants of hyperuricemia and its relationship with clinical variables in SLE patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 167 SLE patients and 195 control subjects (CS). Nutrient intake, anthropometry, biochemical, and cardiometabolic indexes were evaluated. In SLE patients, adequate protein (OR = 0.4; p = 0.04) and carbohydrate (OR = 0.2; p = 0.01) intakes were associated with a lower risk of hyperuricemia. SLE patients with hyperuricemia presented a higher risk of clinical (OR = 2.2; p = 0.03) and renal activity (OR = 3.4; p < 0.01), as well as triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL (OR = 3.6; p < 0.01), hs-CRP ≥1 mg/L (OR = 3.1; p < 0.01), Kannel score ≥3 (OR = 2.5; p = 0.02), and BMI ≥25 kg/m2 (OR = 2.2; p = 0.02). Oppositely, serum levels of HDL-C ≥40 mg/dL (OR = 0.2; p < 0.01) were associated with a lower risk of hyperuricemia. According to the pharmacotherapy administered, prednisone treatment was associated with a high risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 4.7; p < 0.001). In contrast, the hydroxychloroquine treatment was associated with a lower risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 0.4; p = 0.02). In conclusion, SLE patients with hyperuricemia presented a high risk of clinical and renal activity as well as worse cardiometabolic status. Notably, an adequate intake of protein, carbohydrates, healthy HDL-C serum levels, and hydroxychloroquine treatment could be determinants of lower risk of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Humans are simultaneously exposed to numerous of environmental brominated flame retardants (BFRs). We aim to explore the overall associations of BFRs mixture on metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components and further identify significant chemicals. METHODS This study included 4641 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2007-2016. The weighted logistic regression was conducted to estimate the association of a single BFR exposure with MetS and its components. Meanwhile, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were adopted to evaluate the overall associations of BFRs mixture on MetS and its components, and to identify significant chemicals. We also evaluated potential associations modified by sex. RESULTS In the weighted logistic regression model, PBB153 were positively associated with MetS in a dose-dependent manner (Ptrend < 0.05). For its components, increasing quartiles of most BFRs were positively associated with abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL. However, we found no statistically significant associations between BFRs and hypertension and hyperglycemia. WQS analyses found that BFRs mixture was positively associated with MetS (OR: 1.30; 95%CI:1.14, 1.46), abdominal obesity (OR: 1.15; 95%CI:1.03, 1.27), hypertriglyceridemia (OR:1.43; 95%CI:1.19, 1.67), and low HDL (OR: 1.15; 95%CI:1.01, 1.29). BKMR showed associations in a similar direction as WQS for BFRs mixture. For MetS, hypertriglyceridemia and Low HDL, PBB153, PBDE28 and PBDE209 were the most heavily weighting chemicals and had the highest the posterior inclusion probabilities in the WQS and BKMR, respectively. BFRs showed stronger associations of MetS and its components in males than in females. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggested exposure to BFRs mixture was positively associated with MetS and its components in adults, and PBB153, PBDE28 and PBDE209 were the significant chemicals. However, prospective cohort studies are still needed to confirm the causal effect between BFRs mixture and MetS.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability in people with diabetes mellitus (DM), since finding the correlation between DM and CVD risk factors can be effective in preventing the incidence of morbidity and mortality in patients. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in people with and without metabolic syndrome (MtS) in DM. This cross-sectional study was part of the Rafsanjan Cohort Study as part of the comprehensive Persian (Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IRAN) on 35-70-year old adults with and without MtS in DM. Indicators of CVD risk factors, including gender, age, blood pressure, dyslipidemia, smoking, alcohol consumption, fasting blood sugar, creatinine, blood urea, waist circumference, body mass index, family history, physical inactivity, and fruit and vegetable consumption, were collected in the Persian Cohort Questionnaire. The data was analyzed by SPSS software version 22. The prevalence of MtS in 1933 participants was estimated to be 80% (95% confidence interval 78.1-81.8%). In the logistic regression model, smoking, alcohol consumption, and triglycerides were identified as the factors associated with MtS. Our results show that, based on our study, the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in DM was high. The suggested solutions in this field are to reduce smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as to control hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and being overweight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Familial dysbetalipoproteinemia (FD) is the second most common monogenic lipid disorder (prevalence 1 in 850-3500), characterized by postprandial remnant accumulation and associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Many FD patients do not achieve non-HDL-C treatment goals, indicating the need for additional lipid-lowering treatment options. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of the PCSK9 monoclonal antibody evolocumab added to standard lipid-lowering therapy on fasting and post fat load lipids and lipoproteins in patients with FD. METHODS A randomized placebo-controlled double-blind crossover trial comparing evolocumab (140 mg subcutaneous every 2 weeks) with placebo during two 12-week treatment periods. At the start and end of each treatment period patients received an oral fat load. The primary endpoint was the 8-hour post fat load non-HDL-C area under the curve (AUC). Secondary endpoints included fasting and post fat load lipids and lipoproteins. RESULTS In total, 28 patients completed the study. Mean age was 62±9 years and 93% had an Ɛ2Ɛ2 genotype. Evolocumab reduced the 8-hour post fat load non-HDL-C AUC with 49% (95%CI 42-55) and apolipoprotein B (apoB) AUC with 47% (95%CI 41-53). Other fasting and absolute post fat load lipids and lipoproteins including triglycerides and remnant-cholesterol were also significantly reduced by evolocumab. However, evolocumab did not have significant effects on the rise above fasting levels that occurred after consumption of the oral fat load. CONCLUSIONS Evolocumab added to standard lipid-lowering therapy significantly reduced fasting and absolute post fat load concentrations of non-HDL-C, apoB and other atherogenic lipids and lipoproteins in FD patients. The clinically significant decrease in lipids and lipoproteins can be expected to translate into a reduction in CVD risk in these high-risk patients.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic syndrome (CMetS) has recently emerged as a serious public health concern, particularly for individuals living with chronic conditions. This study aimed to determine the incidence and prevalence of CMetS, as well as the risk factors linked with it, in HIV-positive and HIV-negative adult patients. Methods A comparative cohort study was designed. The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) tools were used to determine the outcome variables. Association studies were done using logistic regression. Result CMetS was found to have a greater point and period prevalence, and incidence estimation in HIV-negative than HIV+ patients using both the NCEP and the IDF tools. Using the NCEP tool, the risk of obesity was 44.1% [odds ratio (OR) = 0.559, 95% confidence interval (CI), (0.380-0.824); P = 0.003] lower in HIV+ than in HIV-negative participants. By contrast, no apparent difference was noted using the IDF tool. Similarly, hyperglycemia [OR = 0.651, 95% CI (0.457-0.926); P = 0.017], and hypertension [OR = 0.391, 95% CI (0.271-0.563); P < 0.001] were shown to be lower in HIV+ patients than HIV-negative patients by 34.9% and 60.9%, respectively. The study revealed significant variation in all biomarkers across the follow-up period in both HIV+ and HIV-negative participants, except for SBP. Conclusions CMetS caused more overall disruption in HIV-negative people with chronic diseases than in HIV-positive people. All of the indicators used to assess the increased risk of CMetS were equally meaningful in HIV+ and HIV-negative subjects.

Abstract
PURPOSE This research aimed at determining the relationship between self-reported sleep duration during week-/work-days and metabolic syndrome (MetS) from NHANES 2013 to 2016. METHODS This study analyzed data from 11,181 people aged 16 or older who took part in the NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys) from 2013 to 2016. A standard questionnaire was used to define self-reported sleep duration, and MetS was defined on the basis of the NCEP (National Cholesterol Education Program)/ATP III revised diagnostic criteria. Logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) models were used to assess the relationship between self-reported sleep duration and MetS. RESULTS The overall prevalence of MetS in the study cohort was 26.1%, with 24.8% for males and 27.3% for females. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, MetS was significantly associated with self-reported short sleep duration (odds ratio = 1.16, 95% confidence interval = 1.03-1.31, P = 0.013) but not with long sleep duration (P = 0.117). RCS regression revealed that self-reported sleep duration was nonlinearly related to MetS (P for nonlinearity = 0.0026). The risk of MetS decreased with increased sleep duration for durations of less than 7 h/day, while there was no association for longer sleep durations. CONCLUSION These results suggest that self-reported short sleep duration is a risk factor for MetS, while long sleep duration is not.

Abstract
Background: Studies have shown the association of vitamin D status with the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), which has attracted an extensive research interest with inconsistent results. Therefore, we hypothesized that vitamin D supplementation (VDS) will benefit adults with MetS. Aims: To test our hypothesis, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of VDS on MetS in adults using relevant biomarkers such as anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, blood lipid profile, glycemia, oxidative stress and vitamin D toxicity (VDT). Methods: Randomized controlled trials published in PubMed, Web of Science, embase and the Cochrane Library between 2012 and 2022 on the effect of VDS on MetS in adults were searched. The language was limited to English. A meta-analysis performed using RevMan 5.4 and Stata 14.0 software, sensitivity analysis, and evaluation of the risk of bias and general quality of the resulting evidence were conducted. Results: Eventually, 13 articles were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, VDS significantly increased the endline serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels as compared to the control [MD:17.41, 95% CI (14.09, 20.73), p < 0.00001]. VDS did not affect waist circumference, body mass index, body fat percentage and VDT biomarkers, but decreased waist-to-hip ratio and blood pressure (p < 0.01). VDS significantly decreased fasting plasma glucose (FPG) [MD: 3.78; 95% CI (−6.52, −1.03), p = 0.007], but did not affect the levels of blood high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG). Pooled estimate of nine papers indicated a significant reduction of fasting insulin (FI) (p = 0.006), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (p = 0.0001). The quantitative insulin check index levels were moderately increased (p = 0.007) without any impact on the glycosylated hemoglobin type A1C (HbA1c). For the oxidative stress parameters, VDS significantly lowered the levels of malondialdehyde and hypersensitive C-reactive protein (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Results of this meta-analysis demonstrate that VDS only reduces insulin resistance and hypertension but not the blood lipid profile and HbA1c. It appears that the evidence for the benefit of VDS in adults with MetS is inconclusive. Further clinical studies are still needed.

Abstract
Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) are at risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS) at a younger age. We sought to obtain the prevalence of MetS in ACHD from a large population-based database in the United States. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with ACHD in Explorys (IBM Inc., Armonk, New York) database from 2008 to 2019. The ACHD cohort included patients aged 20 to 39 years, with moderate and severe congenital heart disease, as defined by ACHD anatomic and physiologic classification. Patients were diagnosed with MetS using the modified International Diabetes Federation's diagnostic criteria. Logistic regression analysis was performed to compare the risk of MetS in the ACHD cohort. MetS was diagnosed in 1,860 of 6,720 patients with ACHD (27.6%). Among 7,359,470 controls, MetS was seen in 742,010 (10.1%). The average age of MetS in ACHD was 31.5 and 32.7 years in controls (p <0.001). The risk of MetS was higher in ACHD versus controls (odds ratio [OR] 2.75 [2.61 to 2.89], p <0.001). The risk of MetS in ACHD was higher in men (OR 3.01 [2.78 to 3.26], p <0.001) and those aged <25 years (men OR 7.57 [6.31 to 9.07], women OR 4.66 [3.85 to 5.63]; p <0.001). The risk of MetS was higher in patients with severe versus moderate ACHD (OR 1.4 [1.56 to 1.74], p <0.001). In conclusion, MetS and its risk factors are more common in young ACHD than in the general population.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome is currently becoming more common. It is a significant public health concern as it is epidemic affecting populations in many regions of the world. In Magadan region no research has been carried out to study the frequency of components of the metabolic syndrome among northerners. This survey was performed to assess the occurrence of the main and additional components of the metabolic syndrome among 17 to 74 year old residents of the Northern region. Two hundred and forty north born Caucasians participated in the study: male subjects at their young age, working age, and retirement age, all belonging to the territory of Magadan region. We used photometric, immunochemiluminescent research methods, as well as standard methods for assessing body mass index and cardiovascular system. The metabolic syndrome factors were determined in accordance with the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), the Adult Treatment Program III (ATP III), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and the Consensus of International Experts in Cardiology and Endocrinology. We analyzed five main components of the metabolic syndrome (overweight, carbohydrate metabolic impairments hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, hypoalphacholesterolemia) and three additional components (presence of insulin resistance, purine metabolism disorder, deficient and insufficient concentrations of vitamin D). Combinations of the components were also studied through the examined age groups. According to the ATP III, NCEP and IDF criteria, the metabolic syndrome was more common in elderly subjects (47%) than in working age (21%) or young examinees (3%). Older males tended to exhibit higher frequency of both the main and additional factors of metabolic syndrome. The total index of the occurrence of metabolic syndrome factors in the group of young men was 101%; in the group of men of working age - 180%, and in men of retirement age - 274%. The results on occurrence of the metabolic syndrome components observed in the surveyed groups of northerners can make an information data base, which we assume can be applied when planning and carrying out scientifically grounded preventive measures, which will improve subjective quality of life and its expectancy under the North conditions.

Abstract
Psoriasis and metabolic syndrome (MetS), a common comorbidity of psoriasis, are associated with mild chronic systemic inflammation that increases oxidative stress and causes cell and tissue damage. At the cellular level, chromosomal and DNA damage has been documented, thus confirming their genotoxic effect. The main objective of our study was to show the genotoxic potential of chronic inflammation and determine whether the presence of both pathologies increases chromosomal damage compared to psoriasis alone and to evaluate whether there are correlations between selected parameters and chromosomal aberrations in patients with psoriasis and MetS psoriasis. Clinical examination (PASI score and MetS diagnostics according to National Cholesterol Education Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults; NCE/ATPIII criteria), biochemical analysis of blood samples (fasting glucose, total cholesterol, low density and high density lipoproteins; LDL, HDL, non-HDL, and triglycerides;TAG), DNA/RNA oxidative damage, and chromosomal aberration test were performed in 41 participants (20 patients with psoriasis without MetS and 21 with MetS and psoriasis). Our results showed that patients with psoriasis without metabolic syndrome (nonMetS) and psoriasis and MetS had a higher rate of chromosomal aberrations than the healthy population for which the limit of spontaneous, natural aberration was <2%. No significant differences in the aberration rate were found between the groups. However, a higher aberration rate (higher than 10%) and four numerical aberrations were documented only in the MetS group. We found no correlations between the number of chromosomal aberrations and the parameters tested except for the correlation between aberrations and HDL levels in nonMetS patients (rho 0.44; p < 0.02). Interestingly, in the MetS group, a higher number of chromosomal aberrations was documented in non-smokers compared to smokers. Data from our current study revealed an increased number of chromosomal aberrations in patients with psoriasis and MetS compared to the healthy population, especially in psoriasis with MetS, which could increase the genotoxic effect of inflammation and the risk of genomic instability, thus increasing the risk of carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to systematically evaluate the effects of berberine on the inflammatory markers of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and related disorders. METHOD Databases that were searched from inception to October 2020 included PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, WanFang Data, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Two reviewers independently selected articles and extracted data. The pooled evaluations were entered and analyzed in Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS Of the 7387 publications screened, 52 studies were included, and the related trials involved 4616 patients. Pooled estimates showed that the use of berberine could significantly reduce the concentration level of C-reactive protein (CRP) [standardized mean difference (SMD) = - 1.54, 95% confidence intervals (CI) - 1.86, - 1.22, p < 0.05], tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) [SMD = - 1.02, 95% CI - 1.27, - 0.77, p < 0.05], and interleukin 6 (IL-6) [SMD = - 1.17, 95% CI - 1.53, - 0.81, p < 0.05] among patients with MetS and related disorders. However, it did not affect the level of interleukin 1β (IL-1β) [SMD = - 0.81, 95% CI - 1.80, 0.17, p = 0.11]. CONCLUSION Overall, the use of berberine in patients with MetS and related disorders appeared to significantly decrease several inflammatory markers. Further multi-center and rigorous investigations with larger patient populations are encouraged to confirm the effect of berberine on MetS and related disorders.

Abstract
The American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) "Ten things to know about ten cardiovascular disease risk factors - 2022" is a summary document regarding cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. This 2022 update provides summary tables of ten things to know about 10 CVD risk factors and builds upon the foundation of prior annual versions of "Ten things to know about ten cardiovascular disease risk factors" published since 2020. This 2022 version provides the perspective of ASPC members and includes updated sentinel references (i.e., applicable guidelines and select reviews) for each CVD risk factor section. The ten CVD risk factors include unhealthful dietary intake, physical inactivity, dyslipidemia, pre-diabetes/diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, considerations of select populations (older age, race/ethnicity, and sex differences), thrombosis (with smoking as a potential contributor to thrombosis), kidney dysfunction and genetics/familial hypercholesterolemia. Other CVD risk factors may be relevant, beyond the CVD risk factors discussed here. However, it is the intent of the ASPC "Ten things to know about ten cardiovascular disease risk factors - 2022" to provide a tabular overview of things to know about ten of the most common CVD risk factors applicable to preventive cardiology and provide ready access to applicable guidelines and sentinel reviews.

Abstract
Background Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The aims of our real-life study were to compare the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and cardiovascular events (CVEs) among patients with PsA with a control population, to evaluate the impact of correcting factors in equations that assess cardiovascular risk (CVR) in PsA, and to determine the percentage of patients who reach the LDLc target as indicated by the European guidelines. Methods In this observational cross-sectional monocentric case-control study, we used a standardized procedure to systematically assess patients with PsA aged 25–85 years who met the Classification for Psoriatic Arthritis (CASPAR) criteria. Controls were extracted from the MOnitoring NAtionaL du rISque Artériel (MONALISA) study. We compared the prevalence of CVRFs, CVEs, the CVR, and the percentage of patients reaching recommended LDLc target in both populations. The CVR was first assessed using SCORE and QRISK2 equations. Then, the SCORE equation was corrected by applying a 1.5 multiplication factor, as recommended by EULAR for rheumatoid arthritis (SCORE-PsA), and the QRISK2 was corrected using the “rheumatoid arthritis” item (QRISK2-PsA). Results A total of 207 PsA and 414 controls were included. CVRFs and CVEs were more frequent in the PsA group. After controlling for age and gender, atherothrombotic disease was increased in the PsA population (SCORE p = 0.002, QRISK2 p = 0.001). Using the SCORE-PsA increased the percentage of patients with a high or very high CVR from 39.3 to 45.3% in the PsA group. Similarly, using the QRISK2-PsA increased the percentage of patients with a CVR ≥ 10% from 44.9 to 53.2%. The percentages of patients with PsA with high LDLc in the high and very high CVR groups were not significantly different from controls, despite a trend in favor of patients with PsA. Of the 83 PsA with a QRISK2 ≥ 10%, only 22.9% were treated with statin vs. 35.8% of the 134 controls. The QRISK2-PsA score did not alter these results. Conclusion In real-life, patients with PsA have a higher prevalence of CVRFs, as well as a higher prevalence of CVEs compared to the general population. The CVR is higher in the PsA population than in the controls either using the SCORE and QRISK2 equations or using the corrected SCORE- PsA and QRISK2-PsA equations.

Abstract
Increased hepatic lipid content and decreased insulin sensitivity have critical roles in the development of cardiometabolic diseases. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the dose-response effects of consuming high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)-sweetened beverages for two weeks on hepatic lipid content and insulin sensitivity in young (18-40 years) adults (BMI 18-35 kg/m2). In a parallel, double-blinded study, participants consumed three beverages/day providing 0% (aspartame: n = 23), 10% (n = 18), 17.5% (n = 16), or 25% (n = 28) daily energy requirements from HFCS. Magnetic resonance imaging for hepatic lipid content and oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were conducted during 3.5-day inpatient visits at baseline and again at the end of a 15-day intervention. During the 12 intervening outpatient days participants consumed their usual diets with their assigned beverages. Significant linear dose-response effects were observed for increases of hepatic lipid content (p = 0.015) and glucose and insulin AUCs during OGTT (both p = 0.0004), and for decreases in the Matsuda (p = 0.0087) and Predicted M (p = 0.0027) indices of insulin sensitivity. These dose-response effects strengthen the mechanistic evidence implicating consumption of HFCS-sweetened beverages as a contributor to the metabolic dysregulation that increases risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the fast extension of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has resulted in significant increases in life expectancy, disorders such as cardiometabolic syndrome (CMetS), which have received less attention, are becoming a major concern in HIV/AIDS patients (PLWHA). OBJECTIVES The purpose of this research was to identify biomarkers and determine the prevalence of CMetS in PLWHA using the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) tools. METHODS Between January 2019 and February 2021, a hospital-based study of HIV-infected patients (n = 288) was conducted. The data were analyzed using binary logistic regression. To control the effect of confounders, independent variables with a P-value of <.20 in the bivariate logistic regression were incorporated into multivariate logistic regression. Statistical significance was defined as a 95% confidence interval and a P-value of less than .05. RESULTS The risk of CMetS increased twofold as age increased each year (P = .009), 1.2 times as the age at which cART began increased (P = .015), and 6 times with 1 or more co-morbidities (P = .028), according to the NCEP tool. Furthermore, significant NCEP-CMetS correlations were produced by a rise in diastolic blood pressure (P < .001) and cART duration (P = .006). Male gender was 99.9% less likely to be related to CMetS using the IDF tool, and the risk of CMetS increased fourfold with each unit increase in waist circumference (P < .001). Triglycerides and blood type "A" have been found to have substantial relationships with CMetS using both techniques. CONCLUSION According to the study, CMetS was found to be common in PLWHA. Age, time on cART, age when cART started, gender, co-morbidities, waist circumference, and diastolic blood pressure were all revealed to be significant predictors of CMetS. Triglycerides and blood type "A" were the only biomarkers found to be significant with CMetS using both the NCEP and IDF tools.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The metabolic syndrome involves both metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors and is associated with cardiovascular mortality. Epicardial fat tissue plays a crucial role in deleterious effects of metabolic syndrome on the heart, including myocardial fibrosis. The fragmented QRS reflects heterogeneous depolarization of the myocardium and occurs as a result of fibrosis. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether there is an association between fragmented QRS and epicardial fat tissue in patients with metabolic syndrome. METHODS This study enrolled 140 metabolic syndrome patients, of whom 35 patients with fragmented QRS (+) and 105 patients with fragmented QRS (-). The two groups were compared with respect to clinical, laboratory, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic indexes. RESULTS Fragmented QRS (+) patients had higher waist circumference, red cell distribution width, creatinine, left ventricular end-systolic diameter, left atrium diameter, septal a velocity, QRS duration, and epicardial fat tissue compared with fragmented QRS (-) patients. Waist circumference, red cell distribution width, QRS duration, left ventricular end-systolic diameter, left atrium diameter, septal a velocity, and epicardial fat tissue were significantly associated with the presence of fragmented QRS. The QRS duration and epicardial fat tissue were independently associated with the presence of fragmented QRS on surface electrocardiographic in metabolic syndrome patients. CONCLUSIONS Epicardial fat tissue and QRS duration were independently associated with the presence of fragmented QRS. Basic echocardiographic and electrocardiographic parameters might be used for the risk stratification in metabolic syndrome patients.

Abstract
Background The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) Clinical Practice Statement (CPS) regarding definition, diagnosis, bias, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and telehealth is intended to provide clinicians an overview of obesity medicine and provide basic organizational tools towards establishing, directing, managing, and maintaining an obesity medical practice. Methods This CPS is based upon published scientific citations, clinical perspectives of OMA authors, and peer review by Obesity Medicine Association leadership. Results OMA has defined obesity as: "A chronic, progressive, relapsing, and treatable multi-factorial, neurobehavioral disease, wherein an increase in body fat promotes adipose tissue dysfunction and abnormal fat mass physical forces, resulting in adverse metabolic, biomechanical, and psychosocial health consequences." While body mass index may be sufficiently diagnostic for populations and many patients, accurate diagnosis of adiposity in an individual may require anthropometric assessments beyond body weight alone (e.g., waist circumference, percent body fat, and android/visceral fat). Obesity complications can be categorized as "sick fat disease" (adiposopathy) and/or "fat mass disease." Obesity complications predominantly of fat mass origins include sleep apnea and orthopedic conditions. Obesity complications due to adiposopathic endocrinopathies and/or immunopathies include cardiovascular disease, cancer, elevated blood sugar, elevated blood pressure, dyslipidemia, fatty liver, and alterations in sex hormones in both males (i.e., hypogonadism) and females (i.e., polycystic ovary syndrome). Obesity treatment begins with proactive steps to avoid weight bias, including patient-appropriate language, office equipment, and supplies. To help manage obesity and its complications, this CPS provides a practical template for an obesity medicine practice, creation of standard operating procedures, and incorporation of the OMA "ADAPT" method in telehealth (Assessment, Diagnosis, Advice, Prognosis, and Treatment). Conclusions The OMA CPS regarding "Obesity Definition, Diagnosis, Bias, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Telehealth" is one in a series of OMA CPSs designed to assist clinicians care for patients with the disease of obesity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obesogenic built- and social-environments in low-income and minority communities are often blamed for the higher rates of obesity in this population, but existing evidence is based largely on observational studies. This study leverages a natural experiment created by the redevelopment of a public housing community to examine the impact of major improvements to the housing, built, and social environments on obesity among residents. METHODS/DESIGN The study design is a natural experiment where residents from the redeveloped community (treatment group) will be compared to those from a similar community (control group) in terms of their pre/post changes in primary outcomes using annual longitudinal data on a cohort of residents. Quasi-experimental variation in the timing of exposure to various redevelopment components within the treated community will be further leveraged within a stepped-wedge research design to assess the impact of the redevelopment components. Primary outcome measures include body mass index, overweight, and obese status. RESULTS A cohort of 868 adults and 704 children (ages 2-17 years) was recruited during 2018-2019 with up to two waves of baseline data. At baseline, the prevalence of obesity (overweight or obesity) was 57.2% (81.3%) in adults and 33.1% (52.4%) among children, with no significant differences by treatment status. No differential trends in primary outcomes were observed by treatment status during the two years of baseline. DISCUSSION This natural experiment study offers a unique opportunity to assess whether improvements to housing, built, and social environment in low-income minority communities can lead to reductions in obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A significant proportion of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) population is non-obese. Prior studies reporting the severity of NAFLD amongst non-obese patients were heterogenous. Our study, using data from the largest biopsy-proven NAFLD international registry within Asia, aims to characterize the demographic, metabolic and histological differences between non-obese and obese NAFLD patients. METHODS 1812 biopsy-proven NAFLD patients across nine countries in Asia assessed between 2006 and 2019 were pooled into a curated clinical registry. Demographic, metabolic and histological differences between non-obese and obese NAFLD patients were evaluated. The performance of Fibrosis-4 index for liver fibrosis (FIB-4) and NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS) to identify advanced liver disease across the varying obesity subgroups was compared. A random forest analysis was performed to identify novel predictors of fibrosis and steatohepatitis in non-obese patients. FINDINGS One-fifth (21.6%) of NAFLD patients were non-obese. Non-obese NAFLD patients had lower proportions of NASH (50.5% vs 56.5%, p = 0.033) and advanced fibrosis (14.0% vs 18.7%, p = 0.033). Metabolic syndrome in non-obese individuals was associated with NASH (OR 1.59, 95% CI 1.01-2.54, p = 0.047) and advanced fibrosis (OR 1.88, 95% CI 0.99-3.54, p = 0.051). FIB-4 performed better than the NFS score (AUROC 81.5% vs 73.7%, p < 0.001) when classifying patients with F2-4 fibrosis amongst non-obese NAFLD patients. Haemoglobin, GGT, waist circumference and cholesterol are additional variables found on random forest analysis useful for identifying non-obese NAFLD patients with advanced liver disease. CONCLUSION A substantial proportion of non-obese NAFLD patients has NASH or advanced fibrosis. FIB-4, compared to NFS better identifies non-obese NAFLD patients with advanced liver disease. Serum GGT, cholesterol, haemoglobin and waist circumference, which are neither components of NFS nor FIB-4, are important biomarkers for advanced liver disease in non-obese patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION gut microbiota (GM) seems to be involved in the pathophysiology and progression of both metabolic syndrome (MS) and obesity. The aim was to investigate GM's composition in patients with severe obesity, candidates for bariatric/metabolic surgery BMS. MATERIALS AND METHODS Multicentre, prospective, cohort study, enrolling 84 patients with BMI 40-55 kg/m2, divided bymetabolic status (MS) inhealthy(group A), pre-MS (B), or MS (C). RESULTS No differences were foundregarding anthropometric,nutritional parameters, except for vitamin D.As a whole the alpha and beta diversity examinations showed no statistical differences in GM profile. A total of 5/7 phyla with relative frequencies were identified above 0.1% (Actinobacteria,Bacteroidetes,Firmicutes,Proteobacteria,Verrucomicrobia).FusobacteriaandPatescibacteriarepresented the less abundant. There were no significant differences in the top ten genera.Data onBacteroidetes(inversely related to triglycerides and LDL and directly related to HDL levels) and onFirmicutes(opposite trend) relative abundances suggest no differences among the three conditions.No correlation between the relative abundance of themain phylaand plasmatic glucose levels was observed. CONCLUSIONS In a selected cohort of patients with obesity, MS did not affect the preoperative GM's profile. Severe obesity, per se, seems to be an independent condition affecting GM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of different cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs), and its different combinations with other CMRFs, such as arterial stiffness have been hypothesized to explain, at least partially, increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Thus, in this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to synthesize the evidence regarding the association between the clustering of MetS-related CMRFs and arterial stiffness measured using pulse wave velocity (PWV). METHODS Original studies analysing the association between arterial stiffness, measured using PWV, and MetS were systematically searched. Pooled effect size estimates and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the DerSimonian and Laird method for two separate analyses: the diagnosis of MetS and PWV values and the number of CMRFs and PWV values. RESULTS Moderate effect size estimates were observed between MetS and PWV (0.68, 95% CI: 0.54-0.82) with a slightly higher effect size for the low-risk compared with the high-risk population group (0.75, 95% CI: 0.58-0.92; and 0.51, 95% CI: 0.32-0.82, respectively). A trend between the number of MetS-related CMRFs and PWV was found with the pooled effect size nearly doubling as the number of MetS-related CMRFs increased, 0.11 (95% CI: 0.04-0.17) for one MetS-related CMRF, 0.26 (95% CI: 0.13-0.4) for two, and 0.4 (95% CI: 0.2-0.6) for three or more. CONCLUSION These results demonstrated a clinically relevant association between MetS and PWV and an increasing trend in PWV values, such as a MetS-related CMRF increase. Although these results should be considered cautiously because of the considerable heterogeneity, our findings reinforce the rationale of MetS as an aggregation of risk factors with common causes, which could provide additional useful information to guide clinical management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Familial dysbetalipoproteinemia (FD), characterized by remnant lipoprotein accumulation and premature cardiovascular disease, occurs in homozygous carriers of the APOE ε2 allele, but genetic predisposition alone does not suffice for the clinical phenotype. Cross-sectional studies suggest that a second metabolic hit - notably adiposity or insulin resistance - is required, but the association between these risk factors and development of FD has not been studied prospectively. METHODS For this study, we evaluated 18,987 subjects from two large prospective Dutch population-based cohorts (PREVEND and Rotterdam Study) of whom 118 were homozygous APOE ε2 carriers. Of these, 69 subjects were available for prospective analyses. Dyslipidemia - likely to be FD - was defined as fasting triglyceride (TG) levels >3 mmol/L in untreated subjects or use of lipid lowering medication. The effect of weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, type 2 diabetes mellitus and non-TG metabolic syndrome on development of dyslipidemia was investigated. RESULTS Eleven of the 69 ε2ε2 subjects (16%) developed dyslipidemia - likely FD - during follow-up. Age-, sex- and cohort-adjusted risk factors for the development of FD were BMI (OR 1.19; 95%CI 1.04-1.39), waist circumference (OR 1.26 95%CI 1.01-1.61) and presence of non-TG metabolic syndrome (OR 4.39; 95%CI 1.04-18.4) at baseline. Change in adiposity during follow-up was not associated with development of dyslipidemia. CONCLUSIONS Adiposity increases the risk of developing an FD-like lipid phenotype in homozygous APOE ε2 subjects. These results stress the importance of healthy body weight in subjects at risk of developing FD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and metabolic syndrome frequently co-exist and define obese individuals into different obesity phenotypes, such as metabolically healthy obese (MHO), metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) and metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW). Growing evidence suggests that genetic predisposition and environmental factors can explain the heterogeneity among these phenotypes. METHODS We conducted a case-control study including 130 MHO, 251 MUNW, 208 MUO and 336 health controls by genotyping 2 SNPs (rs2241766, rs1501299) in ADIPOQ to investigate possible associations between SNPs in the ADIPOQ gene with susceptibility to three obese phenotypes respectively in Chinese Han population. Unconditional logistic regressions were used to detect the association between ADIPOQ SNPs and MHO/MUNW/MUO risks. RESULTS Variant G allele of rs2241766 was associated with a reduced odds of MUO (additive model: Adjusted OR = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.40-0.75; P < 0.001) and no evidence of any significant association between rs2241766 and MHO phenotype (additive model: Adjusted OR = 0.84; 95% CI = 0.61-1.16; P = 0.306) or MUNW phenotype (additive model: Adjusted OR = 0.95; 95% CI = 0.73-1.24; P = 0.720) was found. Minor allele T of rs1501299 were significantly associated with decreased risk of MHO (Adjusted OR = 0.53; 95% CI = 0.37-0.76; P < 0.001) and MUNW (Adjusted OR = 0.63; 95% CI = 0.48-0.83; P = 0.001) in additive genetic model after correction for multiple testing. CONCLUSIONS The variant G allele of rs2241766 was negatively associated with risk of MUO and variant T allele of rs1501299 exhibited reduced odds for MHO and MUNW. Beyond that, future studies are warranted to validate and extend our findings.

Abstract
Given rapid advancements in medical science, it is often challenging for the busy clinician to remain up-to-date on the fundamental and multifaceted aspects of preventive cardiology and maintain awareness of the latest guidelines applicable to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. The "American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) Top Ten CVD Risk Factors 2021 Update" is a summary document (updated yearly) regarding CVD risk factors. This "ASPC Top Ten CVD Risk Factors 2021 Update" summary document reflects the perspective of the section authors regarding ten things to know about ten sentinel CVD risk factors. It also includes quick access to sentinel references (applicable guidelines and select reviews) for each CVD risk factor section. The ten CVD risk factors include unhealthful nutrition, physical inactivity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, high blood pressure, obesity, considerations of select populations (older age, race/ethnicity, and sex differences), thrombosis/smoking, kidney dysfunction and genetics/familial hypercholesterolemia. For the individual patient, other CVD risk factors may be relevant, beyond the CVD risk factors discussed here. However, it is the intent of the "ASPC Top Ten CVD Risk Factors 2021 Update" to provide a succinct overview of things to know about ten common CVD risk factors applicable to preventive cardiology.

Abstract
Background/Aims Useful biomarkers for metabolic syndrome have been insufficient. We investigated the performance of serum milk fat globule-EGF factor-8 (MFG-E8), the key mediator of inflammatory pathway, in diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Methods Subjects aged between 30 and 64 years were prospectively enrolled in the Seoul Metabolic Syndrome cohort. Serum MFG-E8 levels were measured at baseline. Results A total of 556 subjects were included, comprising 279 women (50.2%) and 277 men (49.8%). Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 236 subjects (42.4%), and the mean MFG-E8 level of subjects with metabolic syndrome was significantly higher than that of subjects without metabolic syndrome (P<0.001). MFG-E8 level was significantly correlated with all metabolic syndrome components and pulse wave velocity (all P<0.05). Subjects were categorized into two groups according to the best MFG-E8 cut-off value as follows: group 1, MFG-E8 level <4,745.1 pg/mL (n=401, 72.1%); and group 2, MFG-E8 level ≥4,745.1 (n=155, 27.9%). At baseline, metabolic syndrome in group 2 was significantly more prevalent than in group 1 (63.9% vs. 34.2%, P<0.001). During median follow-up of 17 months, metabolic syndrome developed in 122 (38.1%) subjects among 320 subjects without it at baseline. The incidence of metabolic syndrome in group 2 was significantly higher than that in group 1 (55.4% vs. 34.5%, P=0.003). On multivariate analysis, MFG-E8 level ≥4,745.1 pg/mL was an independent predictor for diagnosis and development of metabolic syndrome after adjusting other factors (all P<0.05). Conclusions Serum MFG-E8 level is a potent biomarker for the screening and prediction of metabolic syndrome.

MicroRNAs (miRs) act as regulators of many cellular and metabolic events, and any dysregulation of these tiny molecules can cause great disturbance in one's health. The main purpose of this study was to ascertain the diagnostic potential of miR-148a-5p and miR-21-5p in MetS. METHODS Serum levels of miR-148a-5p and miR-21-5p were quantified in 118 MetS male patients and 30 healthy controls by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Fasting plasma glucose, serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and serum triacylglycerol were measured by the colorimetric method. Blood pressure and anthropometric measurements were performed on each individual. All MetS patients had diabetes and had a large waist circumference, and were divided into 3 groups: group 1, dyslipidemic and hypertensive; group 2, normotensive; and group 3, normal lipid profile. RESULTS miR-148a-5p expression was significantly upregulated in all MetS patients: group 1, 70.3±8.07 (p<0.0001); group 2, 75.0±9.17 (p<0.0001) and group 3, 33.7±6.89 (p<0.0001), when compared with control subjects. However, miR-21-5p expression was elevated only in the sera of group 1 (36.9±8.39, p<0.0001) and group 3 (48.9±12.0, p<0.0001), when compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS Serum levels of miR-148a-5p and miR-21-5p were higher in MetS patients than in healthy controls; consequently, these serum miRs can serve as novel biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have focused on the predictive ability of visceral obesity-related indices for metabolic syndrome (MetS), especially in different ethnic groups. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of visceral obesity-related indices for MetS screening among three major ethnic groups living in remote rural areas of Xinjiang. METHODS Based on multistage stratified cluster random sampling method, 3,192 Uyghurs, 3,054 Kazakhs, and 3,658 Hans were recruited from Xinjiang, China. The Joint Interim Statement (JIS) criteria were used to define MetS. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), area under the ROC curve (AUC), and predictive value of each visceral obesity-related index were used to evaluate the predictive ability of MetS. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the lipid accumulation product (LAP), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were significantly correlated with MetS for each ethnic group, and the odds ratios (ORs) for MetS increased across quartiles. LAP was best able to identify MetS status in Kazakhs (AUC=0.853) and Uyghurs (AUC=0.851), with optimal cut-offs being 36.3 and 28.2, respectively. Both LAP (AUC=0.798) and CVAI (AUC=0.791) most accurately identified MetS status in Hans, with the optimal cut-offs being 27.3 and 85.0, respectively. Moreover, the AUC of the combination of these visceral obesity-related indices is higher for each ethnic group. However, compared with LAP, the improved value of combined screening was not significant. CONCLUSION LAP had the best discriminative capability for the screening of MetS among Kazakhs, Uyghurs, and Hans. The screening ability of CVAI for MetS was similar to that of LAP in Hans. Thus, LAP may be a complementary indicator for assessing MetS in various ethnic groups.

Abstract
Context
Wool is one of the most important animal fibres for the textile industry, and its diameter directly affects its economic value. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying wool fibre diameter (FD) in sheep have not been fully elucidated.
Aims
The aims of the work were to make an initial comparison of skin transcriptomes from sheep with wool of high and low FD, and to identify key genes affecting FD.
Methods
High-throughput RNA-Seq technology was employed to explore the skin transcriptome, using three sheep with fine wool (FD <21.0 μm) and three sheep with coarse wool (FD >27.0 μm).
Key results
We obtained 28607228 bp of clean sequence data, 78.9% (±3.8%) of which uniquely aligned to the reference genome across the six samples. In total, 19914 mRNA transcripts were expressed (FPKM >0) in the six skin samples, among which were certain well-known genes involved in the skin–hair cycle, such as KRTAP7-1, KRT14, Wnt10b, Wnt2b, β-catenin and FGF5. Furthermore, 467 genes were significantly differentially expressed between the fine-wool and coarse-wool groups, including 21 genes with upregulated and 446 genes with downregulated expression in the sheep with lower FD. These differentially expressed genes were particularly enriched in the gene ontology processes related to lipid metabolism, skin development, differentiation and immune function (P < 0.05). The biological processes were involved in collagen catabolism, negative regulation of macromolecule metabolism, steroid hormone stimulation and lipid metabolism. A significant Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway involving the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins was also enriched, revealing that lipid metabolism might be one of the key factors affecting FD. The expression of these differentially expressed genes that were involved in the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins pathway was verified by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The correlation between the mRNA expression level from qPCR and RNA-Seq data was 0.999 (P < 0.001).
Conclusions
The 467 differentially expressed genes, especially those involved in lipid metabolism and immune function, may play key roles in wool follicle metabolism and the expression of wool FD.
Implications
This study provided valuable data for future studies aimed at elucidating the mechanisms that underlie wool follicle metabolism and wool FD. The work may also have implications for studies of the human hair follicle.

Abstract
Clozapine is the only antipsychotic compound indicated for refractory-schizophrenia. However, it is associated with emergent metabolic dysregulation and cardiovascular risk which may lead to mortality. In this study we aimed to explore predictors for mortality in a large cohort of schizophrenia patients treated with long-term clozapine, using the electronic medical records of the largest health care provider in Israel. Among 27,929 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, 1817 were prescribed clozapine during the years 2012-2014. We compared patients who survived (n=1705) and patients who died (n=112) during the 3-year follow-up period. Socio-demographic background, cardiovascular morbidity, medication prescriptions and health-care utilization were compared between groups. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the association of variables with survival. Chronic hypertension was found to be the only metabolic factor associated with significant hazard ratio (HR) for mortality (HR: 1.55 95% CI: 1.03-2.34). Moreover, those who died had more prevalent ischemic heart disease (14% vs 3%, p<0.005) as well as more frequent hospitalizations (0.01±0.02 vs 0.11±0.18 average per month, p<0.005), for longer periods (2.22±9.87 vs 20.38±33.76 days per month, p<0.005). Among those who died, less patients received prescriptions of statins for hyperlipidemia (13.7% vs. 52.9% in survivors, p<0.005) and hypoglycemics for diabetes mellitus (16.3% vs. 67.1% in survivors, p<0.005). Inadequate treatment of metabolic syndrome, under chronic clozapine treatment, was found to be an independent predictor for mortality. Adequate rigorous regimen for diagnosis and treatment of metabolic risk factors, especially hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus, might lower complications rate and prolong life expectancy among this population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION HIV infected persons are twofold likely to experience a heart attack, stroke, and other forms of Cardiometabolic Syndrome (CMetS). METHODS Electronic searches of databases (MEDLINE and Google Scholar) were queried for articles written in English from 2000 to 2019. RESULTS In this review (16 publications), a total of 14,002 participants from 8 countries were included. Two continents contributed to 62.5% of the CMetS studies while 38.1% from Latin America and 24.4% from North America. The studies were conducted in 113 different centers, with an average study length of 2.8 years. The majority of the study designs were cross-sectional (62%) followed by a cohort study (25%) and clinical trials (12.5%). The mean age of the population enrolled was 41.9 years and 54.6% of the participants were males. The overall prevalence of CMetS using the National Cholesterol Education Adult Treatment Panel definition was 20.6%. Only 31.3% of the studies were reported using the International Diabetes Federation definition. Smoking and high blood pressure were reported as a risk factor in 62.5% of the studies, while diabetes (31.3%), family history of CMetS (25%), and cardiac vascular and cancer diseases were reported in 12.5% of the studies. The average duration of stay with HIV after confirmation was 5.23 + 1.4 (years + SD) and the median duration on HAART was 4.5 + 2.3 (years + SD). CONCLUSIONS CMetS was a common problem among HIV infected persons. Several RFs can contribute to the development of CMetS with smoking and hypertension highly interrelated. Abstract
To date, various human disease models in small fish-such as medaka (Oryzias lapties)-have been developed for medical and pharmacological studies. Although genetic and environmental homogeneities exist, disease progressions can show large individual differences in animal models. In this study, we established an intact in vivo angiographic approach and explored vascular networks in the telencephalon of wild-type adult medaka using the spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Our approach, which required neither surgical operations nor labeling agents, allowed to visualize blood vessels in medaka telencephala as small as about 8 µm, that is, almost the size of the blood cells of medaka. Besides, we could show the three-dimensional microvascular distribution in the medaka telencephalon. Therefore, the intact in vivo imaging via optical coherence tomography can be used to perform follow-up studies on cerebrovascular alterations in metabolic syndrome and their associations with neurodegenerative disease models in medaka.

Abstract
Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are public health problems and are increasing globally. We assessed the differences in lipid profiles through lipid testing, thrombotic and inflammatory parameters, and oxidative stress indexes between overweight and obese patients with MetS in a Turkish adult population. We included 100 obese (body mass index [BMI] >30 kg/m2) patients with MetS (66 women, 34 men, mean age 54.0 ± 10.1 years) and 15 overweight (BMI 25-30 kg/m2) individuals (11 women, 4 men, mean age 50.2 ± 14.5 years) as controls. The group with MetS had significantly higher levels of glycaemia, uric acid, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, homocysteine, fibrinogen, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides, small dense LDL, oxidized LDL, apolipoprotein B (Apo B), lipoprotein (a), small and intermediate high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles, oxidative stress index, and significantly lower levels of HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), Apo A, and large HDL particles. In conclusion, obesity with MetS increase atherogenic dyslipidemia and thrombotic, inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers. Furthermore, obesity with MetS decreases protective mechanisms of atherosclerosis. We should at least try to prevent overweight individuals from becoming obese with MetS.

Abstract
This study examines the information potential of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOF MS) and variable ionization energy (i.e., Tandem Ionization™) to study changes in saliva metabolic signatures from a small group of obese individuals. The study presents a proof of concept for an effective exploitation of the complementary nature of tandem ionization data. Samples are taken from two sub-populations of severely obese (BMI > 40 kg/m2) patients, named metabolically healthy obese (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO). Untargeted fingerprinting, based on pattern recognition by template matching, is applied on single data streams and on fused data, obtained by combining raw signals from the two ionization energies (12 and 70 eV). Results indicate that at lower energy (i.e., 12 eV), the total signal intensity is one order of magnitude lower compared to the reference signal at 70 eV, but the ranges of variations for 2D peak responses is larger, extending the dynamic range. Fused data combine benefits from 70 eV and 12 eV resulting in more comprehensive coverage by sample fingerprints. Multivariate statistics, principal component analysis (PCA), and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) show quite good patient clustering, with total explained variance by the first two principal components (PCs) that increases from 54% at 70 eV to 59% at 12 eV and up to 71% for fused data. With PLS-DA, discriminant components are highlighted and putatively identified by comparing retention data and 70 eV spectral signatures. Within the most informative analytes, lactose is present in higher relative amount in saliva from MHO patients, whereas N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, urea, glucuronic acid γ-lactone, 2-deoxyribose, N-acetylneuraminic acid methyl ester, and 5-aminovaleric acid are more abundant in MUO patients. Visual feature fingerprinting is combined with pattern recognition algorithms to highlight metabolite variations between composite per-class images obtained by combining raw data from individuals belonging to different classes, i.e., MUO vs. MHO. The prevalence of metabolic diseases has increased over the past few decades, and epidemiological studies suggest that metabolic diseases may be associated with lifestyle. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between leisure-time sedentary behaviors (LTSBs) and metabolic risks in middle-aged women in China. Data came from the China National Nutrition and Health Surveillance (CNNHS) in 2010–2012. A total of 2643 women aged 46 to 53 years were involved. Multiple linear regression was used to examine the association of leisure-time sedentary duration (LTSD) with total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), waist circumference (WC), and body mass index (BMI). Restrictive cubic splines (RCS) were used to plot the curves between LTSD and the risk of metabolic diseases. Region, education, income, alcohol consumption, exercise, daily energy intake, and fat energy ratio were adjusted for all models. After adjusting for potential influencing factors, the results of multiple linear regression showed that for each additional hour increase in LTSD, TC and TG increased by 0.03 mmol/L and 0.04 mmol/L, respectively. The results of RCS curves showed that the risks of MetS (p for trend = 0.0276), obesity (p for trend = 0.0369), hypertension (p for trend = 0.0062), and hypercholesteremia (p for trend = 0.0033) increased with the increase in LTSD. LTSB was associated with the risks of MetS, obesity, hypertension, and hypercholesteremia in middle-aged women. Reducing LTSD may be an effective way of preventing metabolic diseases in middle-aged women.

Abstract
Standardized animal models represent one of the most valuable tools available to understand the mechanism underlying the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and to seek for new therapeutic strategies. However, there is considerable variability in the studies conducted with this essential purpose. This review presents an updated discussion of the most recent studies using diverse experimental conditions to induce MetS in rodents with unbalanced diets, discusses the key findings in metabolic outcomes, and critically evaluates what we have been learned from them and how to advance in the field. The study includes scientific reports sourced from the Web of Science and PubMed databases, published between January 2013 and June 2020, which used hypercaloric diets to induce metabolic disorders, and address the impact of the diet on metabolic parameters. The collected data are used as support to discuss variables such as sex, species, and age of the animals, the most favorable type of diet, and the ideal diet length to generate metabolic changes. The experimental characteristics propose herein improve the performance of a preclinical model that resembles the human MetS and will guide researchers to investigate new therapeutic alternatives with confidence and higher translational validity.
