Abstract
In the last two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with highly tunable structure and porosity, have emerged as drug nanocarriers in the biomedical field. In particular, nanoscaled MOFs (nanoMOFs) have been widely investigated because of their potential biocompatibility, high drug loadings, and progressive release. To enhance their properties, MOFs have been combined with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to form magnetic nanocomposites (MNP@MOF) with additional functionalities. Due to the magnetic properties of the MNPs, their presence in the nanosystems enables potential combinatorial magnetic targeted therapy and diagnosis. In this Review, we analyze the four main synthetic strategies currently employed for the fabrication of MNP@MOF nanocomposites, namely, mixing, in situ formation of MNPs in presynthesized MOF, in situ formation of MOFs in the presence of MNPs, and layer-by-layer methods. Additionally, we discuss the current progress in bioapplications, focusing on drug delivery systems (DDSs), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic hyperthermia (MHT), and theragnostic systems. Overall, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the development and bioapplications of MNP@MOF nanocomposites, highlighting their potential for future biomedical applications with a critical analysis of the challenges and limitations of these nanocomposites in terms of their synthesis, characterization, biocompatibility, and applicability.

Abstract
Nalidixic acid (NAL) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial widely used for urinary tract infections. As demonstrated, complexation of NAL with Zn2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ was often used to get new formulations with an enhanced efficiency and potency. Therefore, the elucidation of behavior of NAL in solution and of its interaction with metal cations are crucial to better understand the influence of complexation on NAL efficiency and to find the optimal conditions to propose novel formulations. As a preliminary study, spectrophotometric titrations were carried out on NAL to determine the values of the protonation constants and to define its acid-base behavior. Then, the interaction with the three metal cations Zn2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ was investigated by potentiometric and spectrophotometric titrations, varying the conditions of temperature, ionic strength and metal-ligand ratio, thus allowing to get the most robust speciation model and to determine the formation constants with Zn2+, Mn2+, and Cu2+ under different conditions, the sequestering ability of NAL towards metal cations, the formation enthalpic and entropic changes. A simulation under serum conditions was reported to show the relevance of the investigated species. Finally, LD-MS (laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry) and MS/MS analyses highlighted for all systems the formation of the complex species between Zn2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ with NAL. MS/MS investigations assigned the sites of coordination of the ligand with the metal cation. More precisely, deprotonated NAL coordinates the metal cation via the oxygens of the carboxylate and the carbonyl groups.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a significant class of porous, crystalline materials composed of metal ions (clusters) and organic ligands. The potential use of copper MOF (Cu-BTC) for the sonophotocatalytic degradation of Tetracycline (TC) antibiotic was investigated in this study. To enhance its catalytic efficiency, S-scheme heterojunction was created by combining Cu-BTC with Zinc tungstate (ZnWO4), employing an ultrasound-assisted hydrothermal method. The results demonstrated that the Cu-BTC/ZnWO4 heterojunction exhibited complete removal of TC within 60 min under simultaneous irradiation of visible light and ultrasound. Interestingly, the sonophotocatalytic degradation of TC using the Cu-BTC/ZnWO4 heterojunction showed superior efficiency (with a synergy index of ∼0.70) compared to individual sonocatalytic and photocatalytic degradation processes using the same heterojunction. This enhancement in sonophotocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction between Cu-BTC and ZnWO4. Within this heterojunction, electrons migrated from Cu-BTC to ZnWO4, facilitated by the interface between the two materials. Under visible light irradiation, the built-in electric field, band edge bending, and coulomb interaction synergistically inhibited the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Consequently, the accumulated electrons in Cu-BTC and holes in ZnWO4 actively participated in the redox reactions, generating free radicals that effectively attacked the TC molecules. This study offers valuable perspectives on the application of a newly developed S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, demonstrating its effectiveness in efficiently eliminating diverse recalcitrant pollutants via sonophotocatalytic degradation.

Abstract
Active research of metal-containing compounds and enzymes as effective antifungal agents is currently being conducted due to the growing antifungal resistance problem. Metals are attracting special attention due to the wide variety of ligands that can be used for them, including chemically synthesized and naturally obtained variants as a result of the so-called "green synthesis". The main mechanism of the antifungal action of metals is the triggering of the generation and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Further action of ROS on various biomolecules is nonspecific. Various hydrolytic enzymes (glucanases and proteases), in turn, exhibit antifungal properties by affecting the structural elements of fungal cells (cell walls, membranes), fungal quorum sensing molecules, fungal own protective agents (mycotoxins and antibiotics), and proteins responsible for the adhesion and formation of stable, highly concentrated populations in the form of biofilms. A wide substrate range of enzymes allows the use of various mechanisms of their antifungal actions. In this review, we discuss the prospects of combining two different types of antifungal agents (metals and enzymes) against mycelial fungi and yeast cells. Special attention is paid to the possible influence of metals on the activity of the enzymes and the possible effects of proteins on the antifungal activity of metal-containing compounds.

Abstract
Treatment of chronic toxoplasmosis is challenging as the available drugs are effective only in the acute stage. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate Nigella sativa oil (NSO) and wheat germ oil (WGO) loaded on copper-benzene tricarboxylic acid metal organic framework (Cu-BTC MOF) for treating chronic toxoplasmosis in a murine model. Eighty mice were divided into 8 groups (G); uninfected untreated negative control (GI), infected untreated positive control (GII), infected and treated with: Spiramycin (GIII), Spiramycin@Cu-BTC (GIV), Cu-BTC (GV), WGO@Cu-BTC (GVI), NSO@Cu-BTC (GVII) and combined WGO+NSO@Cu-BTC (GVIII). The infected groups were orally inoculated with 10 Toxoplasma gondii Me49 strain cysts/mouse. All drugs were orally administered for 14 consecutive days starting 8 weeks post-infection (wpi). The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated by parasitological (survival rate of mice and brain cyst burden) and histopathological (brain, liver, kidney, eye) parameters. At the end of 2-weeks therapy, the highest therapeutic outcome was achieved with GVII and GVIII exhibiting 100% survival, 64.3% and 51.4% reduction of brain cysts, and an apparent amendment of pathological insults. In the next place was GVI with 90% survival, 49.5% reduction of cysts and marked amelioration of pathological lesions. Meanwhile, GIII and GIV showed 80% survival, 42.4% and 41.8% reduction of cysts as well as minimal to moderate alleviation of tissue damage. The lowest effect was obtained with GV resulting in 70% survival and 24.4% reduction of cysts. The current results support the assertion that the new metal-based nanocomposites can be promising remedies of chronic toxoplasmosis particularly if conjugated with natural herbal extracts as NSO and WGO.

Abstract
Developing degradable filter membranes that inhibit bacterial infection for preventing particle matter and infectious disease has been a research hotspot. Here, the fiber membranes of polylactic acid (PLA)/HKUST-1 with porous structure through the entire fiber matrix were prepared by electrospinning method. Due to the HKUST-1 incorporation and the presence of pore through fiber, the hydrophobicity of prepared membranes had been improved. The PLA/HKUST-1 membranes exhibited the good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and the antibacterial rate for S. aureus reached 99.99%. The filtration performance of PLA/HKUST-1 membranes was better than that of the melt-blown fabric although their thickness was only about one-third of the thickness of the currently commercial polypropylene melt-blown fabric.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a Super absorbent polymer (SAP) containing copper (SAP-Cu) in controlling mal secco disease (MSD) of lemon caused by the fungus Plenodomus tracheiphilus. Super absorbent polymer containing copper was characterized by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and UV-VIS spectroscopy. In vitro tests were performed to determine the inhibitory effects of SAP-Cu against the pathogen on both potato-dextrose-agar medium and naturally infected lemon cuttings. Super absorbent polymer was able to absorb up to about 200 and 30 times its weight of ionized water and copper (II) sulfate solution (Cu2+ ions at the concentration 236 mM), respectively. The distribution of copper released on twigs after 24 h of contact with SAP-Cu was determined by secondary ion mass spectrometry with time-of-flight analyzer (ToF-SIMS). Super absorbent polymer containing copper significantly inhibited the viability of P. tracheiphilus in lemon twigs. Overall, the results of this study showed that the SAP could be a suitable carrier of antifungal compounds.

Abstract
Fusarium wilt has ruined banana production and poses a major threat to its industry because of highly virulent Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) race 4. The present study focused on the efficacy of Pinus wallachiana leaf extracts and its organic fractions against Foc in in vitro and greenhouse experiments. The presence of polyphenols in the fractions was also investigated using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The in vitro tests carried out for the leaf extract of P. wallachiana showed its inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth and, based on this evidence, further characterization of fractions were done. Complete mycelial inhibition and the highest zone of inhibition against Foc was observed for the n-butanol fraction in vitro, while the n-hexane and dichloromethane fractions showed lower disease severity index (DSI) in greenhouse experiments. The fractions were further analysed by HPLC using nine polyphenolic standards, namely quercitin, myrecitin, kaempferol, rutin, gallic acid, trans-ferulic acid, coumeric acid, epicatechin and catechin. The highest content of polyphenols, based on standards used, was quantified in the n-butanol fraction followed by the ethyl acetate fraction of the leaf extract. This is the first report of antimicrobial activity of Pinus wallachiana extracts against Foc to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract
Infectious diseases are a major public health concern globally. Infections caused by pathogens with resistance against commonly used antimicrobial drugs or antibiotics (known as antimicrobial resistance, AMR) are becoming extremely difficult to control. AMR has thus been declared as one of the top 10 global public health threats, as it has very limited solutions. The drying pipeline of effective antibiotics has further worsened the situation. There is no absolute treatment, and the limitations of existing methods warrant further development in antimicrobials. Recent developments in the nanomaterial field present them as promising therapeutics and effective alternative to conventional antibiotics and synthetic drugs. The metal-organic framework (MOF) is a recent addition to the antimicrobial category with superior properties. The MOF exerts antimicrobial action on a wide range of species and is highly biocompatible. Additionally, their porous structures allow the incorporation of biomolecules and drugs for synergistic antimicrobial action. This review provides an inclusive summary of the molecular events responsible for resistance development and current trends in antimicrobials to combat antibiotic resistance and explores the potential role of the MOF in tackling the drug-resistant microbial species.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been shown to be effective antimicrobial agents, particularly if they comprise pathogenicidal metal ions. Nevertheless, the accessibility of these active metal sites to the pathogen, and hence the MOFs' antimicrobial activity itself, is often poor since the metal nodes are usually embedded deep within its three-dimensional (3D) structure. We show that a unique copper-based (copper(II)-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) MOF, whose quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) swordlike structure facilitates exposure of the metal ions along its surface, exhibits enhanced antimicrobial properties against three representative plant pathogens: a bacterium (Pseudomonas syringae), a fungus (Fusarium solani), and a virus (Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV)). Such superior antimicrobial activity results in low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs)─half that of a commercial pesticide and an eighth of its conventional 3D cubic MOF counterpart (HKUST-1)─and hence low phytotoxicity, which can be attributed to the accessibility of the surface copper sites to the pathogen, thereby facilitating their adhesion and physical contact with the MOF. Additionally, we observed that orchids treated with the quasi-2D MOF showed negligible phytotoxicity and 80% decreased viral load. This work constitutes the first study to demonstrate the antimicrobial properties of this novel MOF against bacterial, fungal, and viral plant pathogens, and the first chemical control of ORSV.

MOFs can show sustained release capability, high surface area, adjustable pore size and structural flexibility, which makes them good candidates for new therapeutic systems. This review provides a detailed summary of the biological application of MOFs, focussing on diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. MOFs have been reported for usage as antimicrobial agents, drug delivery systems, therapeutic composites, nanozymes and phototherapies. Furthermore, different MOF-based biosensors have also been developed to detect specific pathogens by electrochemical, fluorometric and colorimetric assays. Finally, we present limitations and perspectives in this field.

Abstract
Olive crop is frequently treated with copper fungicides to combat foliar and fruit diseases such as olive leaf spot caused by Fusicladium oleagineum and anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. The replacement of copper-based products with more eco-friendly alternatives is a priority. Metal nanoparticles synthesized in several ways have recently revolutionized crop protection with applications against important crop pathogens. In this study, we present the development of four copper-based nanoparticles (CuNP Type 1 to 4) synthesized with a wet chemistry approach. The CuNPs were characterized using Transmission Electron Microscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering, Laser Doppler Electrophoresis, and Attenuated Total Reflection measurements. In addition, the activity of the four CuNP types was tested in vitro and in planta against F. oleagineum and Colletotrichum spp. In vitro sensitivity measurements showed that for both pathogens, mycelial growth was the most susceptible developmental stage to the tested compounds. Against both pathogens, CuNP Type 1 and Type 2 were found to be more active in reducing mycelial growth compared to the reference commercial compounds of copper oxide and copper hydroxide. In planta experiments showed that CuNP Type 3 and CuNP Type 4 exhibited a strong protectant activity against both F. oleagineum and Colletotrichum acutatum with control efficacy values significantly higher than those achieved by the applications of either reference product.

Abstract
Novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on thiabendazole (TBZ) were developed. The two structurally distinct TBZ-MOFs synthesized in this study exhibited enhanced durability and a broader biocidal spectrum than either individual bioactive species (i.e., Zn2+ and TBZ). The characteristics of each TBZ-MOF are related to the coordination modes among the Zn2+ ions and ligand donors. The difference in water solubility between the two TBZ-MOFs due to the structural design allows for the controlled release of the desired bioactive component.

Abstract
Spoilage of food has aggravated the issue of food shortage worldwide. Here, we report a strategy for ultrafast hydrogel film forming within 10 s on fruit surfaces with good self-matching, washable removal and preservative property. This carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/tannic acid (TA) hydrogel film (CTHF) is fabricated by bio-material of CMCS and TA via in-situ rapidly crosslinking with high-density hydrogen bonds. Simply blending TA and CMCS solution at room temperature can form CTHF with different roughness (Ra: ranges from 123 to 1.55 nm) on different fruit surfaces, so as to perfectly match the hydrogel protective layer of pericarp. The CTHF slows down fruit decay by its outstanding antioxidant and antibacterial activity. It is soluble and easily removed (within 3-5 min) by washing without environmental pollution and food safety issues. As natural polymer, CTHF shows high promise as sustainable substitutes for conventional plastics packing because of its non-toxic, edible, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly.

Abstract
Water-ethanol suspensions of 2D coordination network (CN) based on rare earth elements and mixed ligands were evaluated as reactive oxygen species (ROS) generators under UV light irradiation, in contact with a biomimetic substrate (tryptophan) or an O2(1Δg) quencher (1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran; 1,3-DPBF). A combination of bottom-up and top-down strategies was implemented in order to obtain nano-sized CN particles and the subsequent colloidal suspensions were also tested towards photodynamic inactivation of Candida albicans (C. albicans). SEM, TEM, FTIR, and XRD techniques were applied to characterize the solids and ICP-AES was employed to determine the metal content of the colloidal suspensions. Promising results were found indicating that the presence of Tb3+ allows an intersystem crossing suitable for singlet oxygen generation, resulting in the antifungal activity of C. albicans culture upon UV-irradiation.

Abstract
In this study, the thermal and catalytic behavior of Ni-microsphere and Cu-MOF were investigated with aspartic acid as the coordinating ligand with different morphologies. The Ni-microsphere and Cu-MOF with aspartic acid, as the coordinating ligand, were prepared via a solvothermal method. The morphology and porosity of the obtained Ni microsphere and Cu-MOF were characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA, DSC, BET and SEM techniques. The catalytic activity of the Ni-microsphere and Cu-MOF was examined in Stille and sulfoxidation reactions. The Ni microsphere and Cu-MOF were easily isolated from the reaction mixtures by simple filtration and then recycled four times without any reduction of catalytic efficiency.

Abstract
Application of natural products as new green agrochemicals with low average lifetime, low concentration doses, and safety is both complex and expensive due to chemical modification required to obtain desirable physicochemical properties. Transport, aqueous solubility, and bioavailability are some of the properties that have been improved using functionalized metal-organic frameworks based on zinc for the encapsulation of bioherbicides (ortho-disulfides). An in situ method has been applied to achieve encapsulation, which, in turn, led to an improvement in water solubility by more than 8 times after 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin HP-β-CD surface functionalization. High-resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR HAADF-STEM) and integrated differential phase contrast (iDPC) imaging techniques were employed to verify the success of the encapsulation procedure and crystallinity of the sample. Inhibition studies on principal weeds that infect rice, corn, and potato crops gave results that exceed those obtained with the commercial herbicide Logran. This finding, along with a short synthesis period, i.e., 2 h at 25 °C, make the product an example of a new generation of natural-product-based herbicides with direct applications in agriculture.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks represent a porous class of materials that are build up from metal ions or oligonuclear metallic complexes and organic ligands. They can be considered as sub-class of coordination polymers and can be extended into one-dimension, two-dimensions, and three-dimensions. Depending on the size of the pores, MOFs are divided into nanoporous, mesoporous, and macroporous items. The latter two are usually amorphous. MOFs display high porosity, a large specific surface area, and high thermal stability due to the presence of coordination bonds. The pores can incorporate neutral molecules, such as solvent molecules, anions, and cations, depending on the overall charge of the MOF, gas molecules, and biomolecules. The structural diversity of the framework and the multifunctionality of the pores render this class of materials as candidates for a plethora of environmental and biomedical applications and also as catalysts, sensors, piezo/ferroelectric, thermoelectric, and magnetic materials. In the present review, the synthetic methods reported in the literature for preparing MOFs and their derived materials, and their potential applications in environment, energy, and biomedicine are discussed.

Abstract
Synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) and evaluation of their potential threats on ecosystem functioning has been reported in this work. A 45-day indoor experiment was conducted to explore the effects of ZIF-8 NPs at three different concentrations (10, 100, and 1000 μg L-1) on the aquatic fungal community associated with Populus nigra L. leaf litter decomposition. After chronic exposure, ZIF-8 NPs at 1000 μg L-1 significantly inhibited fungal biomass and extracellular enzyme activities as a result of inhibition on carbon and nitrogen loss of leaves. Besides, ZIF-8 NPs at 10 μg L-1 increased the percentage of Anguillospora in the fungal community and led Monographella cucumerina and Mycosphaerella tassiana to become the hub species, which eventually significantly promoted the decomposition of leaf litter. In conclusion, our study provides a reference for the possible ecotoxicity of ZIF-8 NPs on aquatic fungi, confirms the influence of ZIF-8 NPs on nutrient cycling in streams, and also emphasizes the importance of fungal community structure and hub species in the process of leaf litter decomposition.

Abstract
Three dimensional (3D) copper metal organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) containing glutarates and bipyridyl ligands (bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, or bpp = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane) were synthesized by using previously reported hydrothermal reactions or a layering method. All three Cu-MOFs contained well-defined one dimensional (1D) channels with very similar pore shapes and different pore dimensions. The bulk purities of the Cu-MOFs were confirmed using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) spectra. When the three types of Cu-MOFs were applied to Candida albicans cells and Aspergillus niger spores, an average of about 50-80% inactivation was observed at the highest concentration of Cu-MOFs (2 mg mL-1). The efficiency of the fungal inactivation was not significantly different among the three different types (bpa, bpe, bpp). Treatment of the fungi using Cu-MOFs induced an apoptosis-like death and this was more severe in A. niger than C. albicans. This may be due to elevation of the intracellular level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in A. niger. Generation of the reactive species in solution by Cu-MOFs was observed. However, there was a dramatic variation in the levels observed among the three types. Our results suggest that Cu-MOFs can produce antifungal effects and induce apoptosis-like death of the fungi, which was probably caused by the elevated level of intracellular reactive species.

Abstract
For survival and quality of life, human society has sought more productive, precise, and sustainable agriculture. Agrochemistry, which solves farming issues in a chemical manner, is the core engine that drives the evolution of modern agriculture. To date, agrochemistry has utilized chemical technologies in the form of pesticides, fertilizers, veterinary drugs and various functional materials to meet fundamental demands from human society, while increasing the socio-ecological consequences due to inefficient use. Thus, more useful, precise, and designable scaffolding materials are required to support sustainable agrochemistry. Reticular chemistry, which weaves molecular units into frameworks, has been applied in many fields based on two cutting-edge porous framework materials, namely metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs). With flexibility in composition, structure, and pore chemistry, MOFs and COFs have shown increasing functionalities associated with agrochemistry in the last decade, potentially introducing reticular chemistry as a highly accessible chemical toolbox into agrochemical technologies. In this critical review, we will demonstrate how reticular chemistry shapes the future of agrochemistry in the fields of farm sensing, agro-ecological preservation and reutilization, agrochemical formulations, smart indoor farming, agrobiotechnology, and beyond.

Abstract
Oxygen is commonly separated from air using cryogenic liquefaction. The inherent energy penalties of phase change inspire the search for energy-efficient separation processes. Here, an alternative approach is presented, where we determine whether it is possible to utilise simpler, stable materials in the right process to achieve overall energy efficiency. Adsorption and release by Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are an attractive alternative due to their high adsorption and storage capacity at ambient conditions. Cu-BTC/MgFe2O4 composites were prepared, and magnetic induction swing adsorption (MISA) used to release adsorbed oxygen quickly and efficiently. The 3 wt% MgFe2O4 composites exhibited an oxygen uptake capacity of 0.34 mmol g-1 at 298 K and when exposed to a magnetic field of 31 mT, attained a temperature rise of 86 °C and released 100% of adsorbed oxygen. This water vapor stable pelletized system, can be filled and emptied within 10 minutes requiring around 5.6 MJ kg-1 of energy.

Abstract
Different copper based-materials have been used for controlling some fungal and bacterial pathogens. However, the antifungal activity of the copper-based materials depends on different parameters, such as the crystal phase, synthesis route, and size of the particles. Herein a facile route synthesis method of Cu/CuxO-NPs was achieved through the aqueous phase. The influence of NaBH4 concentration on the phase composition was studied. The synthesized Cu/CuxO-NPs were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering. Five Cu/CuxO-NPs with different phase composition and nanoparticle size were obtained. The antifungal activity of the synthesized Cu/CuxO-NPs was studied in vitro against Fusarium oxysporum. The results indicate that a high percent of inhibition of radial growth (IGR) was obtained with NPs, which have a higher proportion of Cu2O phase and relatively smaller size particles. Furthermore, hypha morphology, membrane damage and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was evaluated with SEM and confocal microscopy.

Abstract
Tremendous efforts have been dedicated to developing functionalized cellulose materials by synthesis with copper-based metal-organic frameworks (MOF199), also known as HKUST-1. However, few studies have explored the deposition of MOFs on woody materials due to the complex chemical compositions of these materials (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin) and their difficulty of bonding with MOF crystals. In this article, for the first time, MOF199 was successfully synthesized onto two different woody materials, moso bamboo and balsa wood, via in situ deposition at room temperature. The results show that the diverse surface roughness and the hierarchical structures of woody materials have significant effects on the size of MOF199 crystal. Additionally, bamboo and wood coated with MOF199 exhibited better antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) than Escherichia coli (E. coli); they could minimize S. aureus colony levels to 2.08 from 8.98 CFU cm-2. This study provides a facile method for the functionalization of woody materials with MOFs for antibacterial applications.

Abstract
Three new CoII-coordination polymers (Co-CPs) containing glutarates and bipyridyl ligands, formulated as [Co2(Glu)2(µ-bpa)2]·(H2O)4 (1), [Co4(Glu)4(µ-bpp)2] (2), and [Co2(Glu)2(µ-bpe)2]·(H2O)0.5 (3), were prepared, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. Glutarates bridge CoII ions to form 2D sheets, and the sheets are connected either by bpa or by bpp ligands to form 3D networks 1 and 2, respectively. Both frameworks 1 and 2 are two-fold interpenetrated, and there is no significant void volume in either network. Four glutarates bridge two CoII ions to form chains, and these chains are connected by bpe ligands to form the 2D sheet 3. The antifungal properties of these new Co-CPs were tested against two model fungal pathogens, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Under the maximum concentration of Co-CPs, 2.0 mg mL-1, the inhibition rates of Co-CPs against A. niger were much lower (44-62%) than those (90-99.98%) observed in C. albicans. The results indicate that 1-3 can inactivate C. albicans cells more efficiently than A. niger spores in the same treatment time, and the greater inactivation of C. albicans can be explained by dramatic changes in the morphology of C. albicans cells. We also found that Co-CPs could generate the reactive species NO and H2O2, and these species might play a role in inactivating fungal cells. Additionally, degradation tests confirmed that the leaching of CoII ions from Co-CPs was not significant. The small amount of leached CoII ions and the robust Co-CPs themselves as well as the reactive species generated by Co-CPs can actively participate in fungal inactivation.

In this research, new conductive nanocomposites of copper metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOF) and polypyrrole (PPy) were fabricated with the aim of exploiting the electrical conductivity of polypyrrole and the porosity of MOFs in the final products. The prepared compounds (PPy/x%Cu-MOF, x = 20, 50, and 80) were investigated by FTIR, PXRD, SEM, TEM, DLS, BET, EDS mapping, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and zeta potential (ξ) measurements. Spherical morphology was confirmed by SEM and TEM analysis. The PPy/80%Cu-MOF nanocomposite showed the highest ξ potential (-40 mV), demonstrating the stability of dispersed particles. The CV results revealed that the nanocomposites have higher capacitance in comparison to the pure materials. In vitro degradation of the as-prepared compounds in simulated body fluid (SBF) was studied by EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and Tafel polarization tests. Furthermore, in vitro biocompatibility of the PPy/x%Cu-MOF composite was evaluated on a group of cells including 3T3 fibroblasts, MCF-7 breast cancer cells, J774.A1 macrophages and red blood cells (RBCs). Viability of 3T3 fibroblasts, MCF-7, and J774.A1 cells, by Methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method, was dependent on Cu-MOF percent and amount of composites. Hemolytic assay for RBCs exposed to different amounts of the PPy/x%Cu-MOF composites showed hematological toxicity less than 5% in most concentrations. In addition, to investigate pro-inflammatory activity, J774.A1 macrophages were exposed to non-toxic concentrations of the PPy/x%Cu-MOF and no significant change in the expression of two inflammatory genes COX-2 and iNOS was observed. Injection of the PPy/x%Cu-MOF (5 mg kg-1) into bloodstream of mice did not increase liver damage marker enzymes alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) level in serum 1 week post injection. Moreover, we observed slight but not significant increase in serum copper level in mice 1 week after injection. According to the results, the PPy/x%Cu-MOF nanocomposites exhibited a good in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility without inducing pro-inflammatory responses in macrophages and show promising potential for different biomedical applications such as biosensors and drug delivery. The release of curcumin from curcumin-loaded PPy/x%Cu-MOF nanocomposites was detectable in plasma of mice 4 days after administration.

Abstract
The fabrication of fungicides in cost-effective and eco-friendly ways is particularly important for agriculture. Plant pathogenic fungi produce many economic and ecological problems worldwide, which must be controlled with potent fungicides. Here we propose the green synthesis of fungicides, which consist of copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) prepared in aqueous media. Through in vitro experiments, the antifungal efficacy against Fusarium solani, Neofusicoccum sp., and Fusarium oxysporum was investigated. Although the antifungal activity differs for each fungal species, it was found that the Cu-NPs induce strong morphological changes in the mycelium. Additionally, the damage of the cell membranes of the pathogens was revealed by microscopic observations. For the three evaluated fungi, fluorescence microscopy demonstrated the intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species in the mycelium. This work proves that the green-synthesized Cu-NPs are potential fungicides against F. solani, Neofusicoccum sp., and F. oxysporum. The fabrication of fungicides in cost-effective and eco-friendly ways is particularly important for agriculture.![]()
