Abstract
This study examined a model based on the Terror Management Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to identify factors associated with social work students` intention to work with older adults. A cross-sectional study with a sample of 375 first-year Israeli social work students was undertaken. Attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control were directly associated with this intention. Contact with older adults was related to anxiety about older adults, which along with anxiety about self-aging, was related to the TPB constructs. The model explained 63% of the variance of the students` intention to work with older adults.

Abstract
Background Although ageism has a strong relationship with attitudes toward dementia, no study has confirmed how person-centered care and compassion mediate the relationship between nursing students' ageism and attitudes toward dementia. Objectives This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of person-centered care competency and compassion competency on ageism and attitudes toward dementia among nursing undergraduates. Participants Participants were 295 undergraduate nursing students from four universities. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional electronic survey was conducted, involving the selection of four Korean nursing schools for the study. Data was obtained via an online survey conducted from March to July 2022. Data were analyzed with Pearson's correlations, and multi-mediating effects using the PROCESS Macro for software, utilizing bootstrap techniques. Results Attitudes toward dementia was correlated with ageism (r = -0.386, p < 0.001), person-centered care (r = 0.422, p < 0.001), and compassion competency (r = 0.457, p < 0.001). The total effect (β = -0.326, p < 0.001) and direct effect (β = -0.243, p < 0.001) of ageism on attitudes toward dementia were significant. Ageism does not have a direct effect on compassion competency (Std. estimate = -0.0213, CI: -0.0518∼0.0048). However, person-centered care and compassion competency had multiple serial mediating effects on the relationship between ageism and attitudes toward dementia (Std. estimate = -0.0357, CI: -0.0624∼-0.0145). Conclusions Person-centered care and compassion competency may mediate the association between ageism and attitudes toward dementia. Ageism was negatively associated with person-centered care and compassion competency, which in turn positively contributed to attitudes toward dementia. Therefore, an educational program that considers the interaction between generations and the context of older people must be applied to increase person-centered care and compassion competency.

Abstract
Robust evidence supports the role of physical activity and exercise in increasing longevity, decreasing morbidity and helping older adults maintain the highest quality of life attainable. However, the majority of older adults are not sufficiently physically active and interventions are needed to change their behaviors. Familial or intergenerational contact has been positively linked to health and well-being in older adults. Therefore, this study aimed to i) establish acceptability and test the functionality and useability of a novel technology-driven intergenerational intervention targeting physical activity and age stereotypes, and ii) identify any potential issues with recruitment and retention. Four familial dyads (adult ≥ 65 and child 7-11 years) engaged with the intervention. Working collaboratively during a four-week trial, they combined daily step-counts (acquired via any activity of their choice, using PA trackers) to complete a virtual walk route using online platform World Walking. Thematic analysis of three post-intervention focus groups (one older adult; one child; one additional parental cohort) identified eight subthemes: Engagement; Provision of a Positive Experience; Participant Stimuli; Generated Outcomes; Operationality; Limitations; Mediators; Facilitators, and Perceptions. Participants enjoyed and successfully engaged with the intervention; when designing behaviour change interventions for older adults, flexibility within pre-established routines, individual choice, and avoiding rigidly imposed structures, is important. Strategies to challenge negative perceptions of older adults' engagement with technology and PA should be integrated into recruitment processes.

Abstract
This study investigated the minority-blaming phenomenon in South Korea during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic amplified fear, discrimination, and structural inequalities among minoritized groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study identified who was blamed for the spread of COVID-19 and the sociodemographic characteristics associated with this blame. Additionally, it examines the roles of individual and interpersonal fear and social empathy in minority blaming. We measured the fear of COVID-19 at both individual and interpersonal levels. Individual fear was assessed through personal health concerns, while the fear of transmitting the virus to others was measured as interpersonal fear. Social empathy was defined by macro perspective-taking, cognitive empathy, self-other awareness, and affective responses. The study was conducted through an online survey involving a quota sample of 1,500 South Korean participants aged 19-69 years, based on age, gender, and residential area. The response was collected in December 2020, when mass infections in specific communities received attention from mass and social media before the national spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Analytical strategies, including OLS and hierarchical regression models, were employed to examine the roles of socioeconomic factors, individual and interpersonal fear, and social empathy in minority blaming. This study found varying correlations between sociodemographic factors and attitudes toward ethnic, religious, sexual, economic, and age-minority groups. Individual fear of contracting COVID-19 was associated with increased blame across all minority groups. In contrast, interpersonal fear was associated with increased blame only for ethnic and religious minority groups. Similarly, social empathy presented mixed associations, as it displayed a buffering role on blaming ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities when considered alongside interpersonal fear, yet mildly intensified blame for economic and age minorities. These findings provide an understanding on fear-induced minority blaming during the pandemic and the potential role of social empathy in mitigating blame.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Ageism is the negative perception towards others based on age. The aim of this research was to analyze the levels of ageism and its association with sexism and other factors in university students. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross-sectional study among the students of the University of Granada. The data was collected through an online survey. Information on sociodemographic and academic variables was collected together with the Negative Stereotypes Questionnaire towards Old Age (CENVE), the Ambivalent Sexism Scale (ASI), the Brief Version of the Big Five Personality Inventory (BFPTSQ), the Anxiety Scale for Aging (AE) and the Contact with the Elderly Scale (CPM). Ageism levels were determined and associations with other variables were analyzed. A logistic regression model explored ageism' associated factors. RESULTS Two hundred and sixty-three students participated. Most had low or very low levels of ageism (83.3%). The most ageist students showed higher hostile sexism (OR=1.07; p<.01) and higher aging anxiety (OR=1.10; p<.05) than students with high scores in ageism. Graduate students showed protector OR for ageism when compared to postgraduate students (OR=.31; p<.05). CONCLUSIONS Higher hostile sexism and aging anxiety are associated with higher ageism in students from the University of Granada. Universities must include in their study plans knowledge about this problem and develop programs aimed at avoiding discrimination in the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the dramatic rise in population aging and widespread negative attitudes toward older people, it is necessary to understand the factors that affect age-related attitudes among young people in order to improve intergenerational solidarity and reduce ageism. The current study examined young people's contact with their grandparents and attitudes toward older people on both explicit and implicit levels. METHOD The sample included 146 Chinese college students (Mage = 21.50 yrs, SD = 2.23, 101 females). Participants completed a questionnaire concerning contact with their grandparents(contact quantity and contact quality), perceived typicality of their grandparents, intergroup anxiety, inclusion of other in the self, and explicit attitudes toward older people (aged 65 years or older) in general. Participants were also invited to complete a single-category implicit association test (SC-IAT) to assess their implicit attitudes toward older people. RESULTS The findings indicated that both quantity and quality of contact with grandparents predicted better explicit attitudes toward older people, and contact effects were stronger when one's grandparents were perceived as being typical of older adults. Contact quantity (not quality) was associated with more favorable implicit attitudes only when one's grandparents were perceived as highly typical older adults. Contact effects on explicit attitudes were mediated by intergroup anxiety and inclusion of other in the self. CONCLUSION Our findings on the positive effects of contact with grandparents underscore the importance of promoting intergenerational contact within the family as a starting point to reduce prejudice toward older adults in age-segregated modern societies. Current results also provide insights on how to extend the benefits of grandparent-grandchild contact outside the family by promoting the perceived typicality of one's grandparents.

Abstract
While the older adult population continues to grow, psychologists specializing in geropsychology remain a small fraction of the workforce. Facing this reality, it is essential for training programs to better monitor whether their students receive adequate training to serve older adults. The current study describes a brief, logistically feasible, and cost-effective program evaluation conducted within one APA-accredited clinical psychology doctoral program. The evaluation consisted of an online survey of doctoral students (n = 99) that explored their field training experiences with older adults, coursework related to aging, and their overall interest in working with older adults. Students reported significantly less coursework and significantly less field work focused on serving older adults when compared to other age groups. However, students reported a high level of interest in learning about aging, with a total of 73.74% of participants (n = 73) reporting at least some current interest. A number of institutional actions resulted from this evaluation, which demonstrate how a brief evaluation can yield data that is practically useful. This case example provides a useful model for others to follow, and may support other institutions' efforts to evaluate, monitor, and make potential improvements to aging-related training in their own programs.

Abstract
In the context of digital transformation, smart senior care (SSC) cognition among elderly individuals has become an important contributor to their health. Using a sample of 345 older adults derived from the cross-sectional data of a questionnaire survey on the application of home-based SSC services and products among elderly individuals, this study explored how the parent‒child relationship mediated the linkage between SSC cognition and elderly health. To examine the moderating role of internet use, we applied the multigroup structural equation modeling (SEM) approach to test whether significant disparities exist between older adults who use the internet and those who do not on the pathways in the mediation model. After controlling for gender, age, hukou (household registration permit), ethnicity, income, marital status, and education level, we found that SSC cognition exerted significant positive effects on elderly health, in which the parent‒child relationship exerted a mediating effect. As for differences between the elderly with internet use and those without, on the three pathways connecting SSC cognition and health, SSC cognition and parent‒child relationship, and parent‒child relationship and health among elderly individuals, older adults who used the internet were more susceptible than those who did not. The findings are helpful for improving the policy-making on elderly health and may serve as a practical guide and theoretical reference for the promotion of active aging.

Abstract
College students are likely to hold negative ageist views and attitudes toward older people. The compassionate presence (CP) intervention could be a promising approach to reduce ageist attitudes that younger adults have of older adults. College students were trained virtually in deep, active, and compassionate listening and were matched with older adults living in assisted-living facilities. The partners met virtually for an hour once per week. Students completed weekly reflections throughout the ten-week intervention. The weekly reflections revealed that students had preconceived notions about older adults before the CP training. After the CP training and throughout the intervention, we noted a positive shift in perception, knowledge, and attitudes toward older adults and aging. Students built meaningful social bonds with older adults, developed strong communication and interpersonal skills, and acquired research and core leadership skills needed for future careers and professional practice.

Abstract
Background With the growing population of older adults, the demand for health rehabilitation services has rapidly increased. Like many countries around the world, the older population in Saudi Arabia is increasing. Tackling ageism has powerful provenance for uncovering and changing the dynamics of contemporary aging in Saudi Arabia. This study examined the attitudes toward older adults and the potential predictors influencing these attitudes among multidisciplinary health rehabilitation students. Methods A total of 293 health rehabilitation students completed an online survey with a mean age of 21.1± 1.3 years. The survey included data about demographic and geriatric-related characteristics, attitudes toward older adults (UCLA-GA), knowledge of aging (FAQ) and aging anxiety (AAS). Results Most participants were female (70.3%), with 53% of the students specializing in physical therapy. The average score of attitudes toward older adults was 3.43 (0.40). The predictors of attitudes toward older adults were knowledge of aging (β = 0.34, p < 0.0001), living with older adults (β = 0.12, p = 0.02) and the importance of contact (very important, β = 0.31, p = 0.04). Conclusion These results provide further evidence to support that ageist attitudes among students can be overcome by enhancing knowledge of aging and promoting positive contact with older adults. With the demographic shift in Saudi Arabia, we propose that there is a great need for establishing a competency-based geriatric education and strategies to enhance positive contact with older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Face-to-face intergenerational contact is associated with more positive attitudes toward older adults. However, such contact can be difficult to achieve, and poor contact experiences can have negative consequences for intergenerational relations. We examined whether mentally simulated intergenerational contact (which is more easily facilitated and controllable) could reduce young adults' inclinations to avoid intergenerational interactions by increasing their inclusion of the older outgroup in the self (IOS), and by enhancing their stereotypes of older adults' warmth and competence. METHOD We conducted an online experiment with 373 young adults from the United States. Participants imagined talking with an older adult (aged 70-75 years) in the circumstances intended to make salient either the older adult's warmth or their competence. RESULTS Both manipulations increased young adult participants' IOS with respect to older adults, which in turn predicted more positive assessments of older adults' warmth and competence. IOS, along with ratings of warmth and competence, inversely predicted the desire to avoid future interaction with older adults. DISCUSSION Findings indicate the viability of a simple and accessible intervention to improve intergenerational relations, which can be tailored to address different goals (e.g., encouraging intergenerational friendships vs. encouraging support for equal rights of older members of the workforce).

Abstract
Intergenerational contact is crucial for promoting intergenerational harmony and reducing ageism. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted and changed the nature and frequency of intergenerational contact. In addition, research suggests that both ageism towards older adults and intergenerational threat regarding succession and consumption, have increased. Through the lens of the Temporally Integrated Model of Intergroup Contact and Threat (TIMICAT; Abrams & Eller, 2016), we explore the implications of these changing dynamics on ageism towards older adults during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Our review reveals that research into intergenerational contact needs to articulate both the time course and salience of contact and threats before making predictions about their impacts on prejudice. The implications of understanding how contact and threat combine to affect ageism for policy and practice are discussed in relation to employment, education, and intergenerational contact programs. We highlight that policy makers play a key role in promoting intergenerational harmony through the reduction of narratives that inflame intergenerational tensions and threat.

Abstract
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vulnerability of older people to COVID-19 has been stressed in political discourse and the mass media, with the call to protect older adults. Therefore, policies aimed at reducing the spread of coronavirus, such as the COVID-19 vaccination passport policy, might be perceived as policies aimed at preserving the health of older people, and negative attitudes toward older people (i.e., ageism) might underlie negative attitudes toward such policies. While intergenerational contact is one of the main antecedents of reduced ageism, the pandemic has forced people to separate, and direct intergenerational contact in particular might have been reduced, possibly being replaced by telephone and virtual contact. In a correlational study (N = 153 Italian university students) we found that quantity and quality of direct intergenerational contact diminished during the pandemic. Virtual intergenerational contact was unexpectedly less frequent than direct contact. Quality of direct contact before the pandemic was associated, over and above the effects of other contact forms under investigation, with reduced ageism, which was in turn associated with negative attitude toward the vaccination passport. Findings will be discussed focusing on the roles of intergenerational contact and ageism for public health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Health practitioners' understanding of the impact of age-based stereotype threat (ABST) on the cognitive test performance of older adults is not well understood. This study aimed to investigate health practitioners' ability to recognize the influence of ABST in the cognitive assessment of older adults and their perceptions of its impact in practice. METHODS One-hundred and twenty-nine health practitioners (86% female; M age = 39.75, SD = 11.50) with experience in conducting cognitive assessments with older adults (mainly psychologists and occupational therapists) completed an online survey assessing demographic and practice characteristics, aging beliefs, a hypothetical cognitive assessment scenario, and perceived impact of ABST on practice. RESULTS Overall, health practitioners rated ABST factors in the assessment scenario as less detrimental to cognitive performance than internal and external factors. In a hierarchical regression model, lower recognition of ABST and negative aging beliefs significantly accounted for lower perceived impact of ABST on older adults' cognitive test performance in practice (R2 = .37, p < .001). CONCLUSION Health practitioners may not recognize the influence of ABST on assessment findings, especially if they hold negative aging beliefs. The findings highlight the need to improve health practitioners' knowledge of ABST to increase the validity of cognitive testing in older adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In most countries, the societal view of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is very negative. The initiatives that are part of the so-called "dementia-friendly approach" aim not only at promoting well-being and dignity of persons suffering from AD but also improving the way they are regarded and their inclusion in society. Unfortunately, scarce research has been conducted to assess whether such goals can be achieved. In France, the experimental Alzheimer Village in Dax is designed as a dementia-friendly community. Due to the recent opening (2020) and the strong local media coverage of this project, a survey has been designed to determine whether the representations of AD have been impacted by such a project. METHODS The survey was conducted before and after the opening of the Alzheimer Village in the city of Dax (hosting the village) and surrounding areas, and in a control city with similar socio-demographics. The analyses intend to compare different dimensions of the representations and attitudes toward AD in the general population. RESULTS A total of 423 persons living in the Alzheimer Village city (37.4% were men) and 415 persons living in the control city (40.2% were men) were interviewed, resulting in 838 complete questionnaires. The main results report significantly lower rating in the perception of loss of identity (β = -0.57, P = .014) and in the feeling of disgust for persons with AD (β = -0.61, P = .008) in the city hosting the village after the opening of the Alzheimer Village. No significant changes were seen in the control city sample. DISCUSSION While societal representations of AD are very robust and difficult to change, this study suggests a modest but significant evolution of representations of AD in the surrounding areas of the Alzheimer Village. HIGHLIGHTS The French Alzheimer Village is one of the very few ones in the world.This is the first study assessing the impact of an Alzheimer Village on disease representations.After the opening of the village, attitudes toward Alzheimer's disease have changed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing students' intentions to work with older people are low, despite a worldwide need for gerontological nursing, with ageism being the main culprit. Romania lacks legislation to prevent and combat elder abuse in healthcare, although it is alleged to be rampant among nursing staff. There is also a lack of research on nursing students' ageism toward older people and intentions to work with them. OBJECTIVES Since ageism conflicts with nursing ethics, we expect moral sensitivity to lower ageism and increase intention to work with older people, while also moderating other socio-psychological influences. Because ageism and intention to work with older people are largely predicted by the same variables, we hypothesize that ageism may function as a mediator. Finally, we explore ageism among Romanian nursing students and its predictors in a culturally sensitive manner. DESIGN This is a cross-sectional, descriptive survey study. SETTINGS The study was conducted in Romania. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS 408 nursing students completed online-administered questionnaires measuring intention to work with older people, ageism, moral sensitivity, death and ageing anxiety, knowledge of ageing, attitudes toward own ageing and intergenerational contact. Data were analyzed with Pearson's correlations, regressions with simple slope analyses and bootstrapped mediation analyses. RESULTS Ageism mediated the relationships between students' intentions to work with older people and knowledge of ageing, ageing anxiety, intergenerational contact quality, attitudes toward own ageing and moral sensitivity. Moral sensitivity decreased ageism and increased intention, while moderating the influence of contact quality, death and ageing anxiety, attitudes toward own ageing and knowledge of ageing on ageism. Additionally, it moderated the influence of perceived behavioral control on intention. CONCLUSIONS Integrating moral sensitivity training in the nursing curricula could both decrease ageism in nursing students and increase their intention to work with older people, providing an efficient and low-cost strategy to aid students consider gerontological nursing for career advancement.

Abstract
Ageism in nursing is difficult to identify, prevent and combat. Using a mixed-method approach in two exploratory cross-sectional studies (N = 512), we brought support for a proposed conceptual difference between ageism toward older adults and ageism toward older patients which may facilitate the identification of ageism in healthcare settings. We also investigated whether nurses' moral sensitivity could buffer the negative effect of socio-cognitive factors on ageism against older patients. Our findings supported our assumption, suggesting that fostering nurses' moral sensitivity could be a promising new avenue to prevent and combat ageism in nurses, together with comprehensive gerontological education meant to decrease stereotyping and help nurses fulfill their roles of moral advocates against older patient discrimination.

Abstract
Objective This brief study examines support for co-residence (i.e. aging parents living with their adult children), and how age predicts support for this belief considering the rapidly aging U.S. population. Background Co-residence, a form of intergenerational transfer between family members, can help facilitate care for aging parents as well as help older adults age in the community. Support for this type of co-residence was on the rise in the 1970s and 1980s. Method Support for co-residence of older adults living with their adult children is estimated using 36,843 responses from the U.S. General Social Survey from 1973 to 2018. Descriptive analyses, logistic regression, and decomposition analyzes are used to test explanatory factors in trends, focusing on differences for older (age 65 and older) vs. younger (under 65) respondents. Results Older adults are less supportive than younger adults of co-residence even as support has generally increased across time. Decomposition results show that a little over half of the difference between younger and older adults is explained by cohort replacement, with two-fifths of the difference unexplained by social or demographic factors. Conclusion Findings suggest that although cohort replacement has contributed to an attitude shift over time, important age differences in attitudes remain. Older adults are less supportive of co-residence than younger adults.

Abstract
Adolescents’ opportunities to benefit from the life wisdom of older persons are very limited. To address this issue, we designed and tested the Building a Community Legacy Together (BCLT) program based on research on the benefits of older people’s wisdom for youth development. In the intervention, the youth participants were trained prior to conducting interviews with older persons regarding their advice for living. The youth participants analyzed the information obtained and presented a summary report to the community. The participants were 93 middle and high school youth who were randomly assigned to the treatment condition with the BCLT program (n = 47) or to the control condition (n = 46). The outcome measures included sense of purpose, self-esteem, attitudes toward older people, confidence interacting with older people, and interest in working with older people. Quantitative and qualitative data were also collected regarding the subjective assessments of the program’s success. We found significant positive effects for the BCLT participants regarding their sense of purpose in life, attitudes toward older people, comfort interacting with older people, and interest in working with older people. The subjective assessments of the participants were overwhelmingly positive. The findings indicate that BCLT had positive effects for the youth participants and support the further development and testing of wisdom-sharing intergenerational programs.

Abstract
Views on aging (VoA), such as self-perceptions of aging or age stereotypes are generated in early childhood and continue to develop throughout the entire lifespan. The ideas a person has about their own aging and aging in general influence their behavior toward older persons as well as their own actual aging, which is why VoA are already important in adolescence and young adulthood. The current study investigates VoA of young adults in different domains (continued growth, physical decline, social loss) and how different family aspects are related to VoA. From February to March 2021, N = 305 young adults [aged 18-30 years, M age(SD) = 22.20 (2.60)] participated in an online survey, in which, in addition to sociodemographic variables and family aspects (contact with grandparents, family age climate, i.e., the frequency and valence of talking about age in the family), self-perceptions of aging, age stereotypes, and the young adults' ratings of their parents' VoA were assessed. The results of stepwise regression analyses predicting the young adults' VoA, revealed significant associations between the quality of contact with grandparents and the self-perceptions of aging of young adults. However, the frequency of contact was neither related to young adults' self-perceptions of aging nor age stereotypes. Grandparents' health status emerged as a significant moderator between the relationship of contact quality and the young adults' self-perceptions of aging as continued growth and physical decline. Family climate was also found to be significantly related to young adults' self-perceptions of aging. Similarities regarding VoA within the family were demonstrated, based on proxy report from the respondents. The results underline the importance of family aspects for the development of VoA in young adulthood, and the significance of interventions targeting these factors to combat ageism.

Abstract
PURPOSE Intergroup contact is an effective strategy to improve intergroup relationships. Although intergroup relationships have been studied extensively, the individual roles of quantity and quality of contact in relationships with cognition, emotion, and intention of behavior toward other ethnic minority groups are not fully understood. This study explores the situation via network analysis among Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities in Southwest China. METHODS We investigated the quantity and quality of intergroup contact and cognition, emotion, and intention of behavior among a sample of 543 Zhuang and 490 Yao ethnic group members. Data were analyzed using the R-package. Network structures were analyzed via the Qgraph package, and the accuracy and stability of the network were measured via the Bootnet package; communities were detected via the Igraph package; bridge analyses were conducted via the Networktools package; and the network difference was compared via the Network Comparison Test package. RESULTS The results indicated perceived intimacy is the central node. Quantity of contact constructed a community with "perceived connection," "sense of community," "knowledge about out-group," and "perceived similarity." Meanwhile, quality of contact constructed a community with "intergroup attitude" and a "feeling thermometer." The remainder of the nodes constructed two additional communities. The network global connectivity and structure between the two ethnic groups were highly similar. CONCLUSION The study examined the quantity and quality of intergroup contact via network analysis for two ethnic minority groups. It was shown that the two groups' global network structures of intergroup contact and their effects are highly similar. Specifically, quantity and quality of contact produce different effects on intergroup relations. Quantity of contact has proximal effects, including instant cognitive and emotional response without depth cognition, while quality of contact has proximal effects that may change deep-seated cognition and subsequently improve intergroup relations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES How intergenerational relationships influence individuals' views on aging remains understudied. This study investigated how multiple older family members' health and financial challenges may shape middle-aged adults' aging anxiety. METHOD Married Korean baby boomers (N = 1,389) from the Korean Baby Boomer Panel Study reported on their own aging anxiety and rated each of their living parents' and in-laws' health and financial conditions. Using structural equation modeling, we examined how parents' and in-laws' health and financial challenges are associated with one's aging anxiety, and whether gender and frequency of intergenerational contact moderate the link. We expected worse health or financial conditions to be associated with higher levels of aging anxiety, and the effect to be more pronounced for women and those with more contact. RESULTS A worse financial condition of the poorest parent/in-law was associated with higher levels of aging anxiety, while worse health condition of the unhealthiest parent/in-law was associated with lower levels of aging anxiety. The same results were found when we considered the sum of all living parents' and in-laws' financial and health conditions. Frequency of contact moderated the effect of the financial condition of the poorest parent/in-law, such that individuals reporting more contact with the poorest parent/in-law showed higher levels of aging anxiety than those with less contact. There was no moderating effect of gender. DISCUSSION The findings highlight the role family ties play in shaping one's aging anxiety. Interventions aimed at improving views on aging through intergenerational interactions should target the quality of the intergenerational experience.

Ageism is pervasive and socially normalized, and population aging has created a need to understand how views of aging and of older people, typically considered to be people over the age of 65, can be improved. This study sought to understand how undergraduate students’ attitudes towards older adults and the aging process may be influenced after completing a typical, lecture-based undergraduate course on aging that lacked service-learning components. Two undergraduate student cohorts (n = 40) at two Canadian universities participated in semi-structured focus groups/interviews, describing how the course may have impacted their perceptions of the aging process and of older adults. An iterative collaborative qualitative analysis demonstrated that course content stimulated a deeper understanding of the aging process, prompting a reduction in and increased awareness of ageism, and enhanced personal connection with aging, ultimately facilitating the development of an age-conscious student. Lecture-based courses focused on aging may be sufficient to facilitate positive attitude change among undergraduate students towards older adults and the aging process.

Abstract
Although many definitions of culture exist, studies in psychology typically conceptualize different cultures as different countries. In this article, we argue that cultural psychology also provides a useful lens through which to view developmental milestones. Like other forms of culture, different developmental milestones are demarcated by shared values and language as well as transmission of particular social norms. Viewing development through the lens of cultural psychology sheds light on questions of particular interest to cultural psychologists, such as those concerning the emergence of new cultures and the role of culture in shaping psychological processes. This novel framework also clarifies topics of particular interest to developmental psychology, such as conflict between individuals at different milestones (e.g., arguments between older and younger siblings) and age-related changes in cognition and behavior.

Abstract
Ageism is recognized as a reason that few students pursue careers in aging. While widely studied, the findings regarding factors that contribute to ageism are mixed. The findings from previous studies are also tempered by methodological issues. To better understand the factors that contribute to ageism among students and guide the development of programming and activities to reduce ageism, a survey study was conducted. The study explores associations between frequency of interactions with older adults, quality of the interactions, and ageism. Students' knowledge of aging is also examined. Using refined measures to assess knowledge of aging and interactions with older adults, the study includes data from 1,040 college students, most of whom are traditional age students (i.e., under the age of 25). Findings from multiple regression analyses document the interplay between frequency and quality of interactions and the role of knowledge on multiple dimensions of ageism. Frequency of interactions with older adults is significantly associated with lower levels of ageism only when the interactions are perceived as favorable. Knowledge of aging is significantly associated with lower levels of ageism. The findings provide valuable information for developing activities to reduce ageism. A new ageism reduction program, which was guided by the study findings and age-friendly university framework, is described. Implications for gerontological education are also discussed.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this project were to investigate changes in nursing students' attitudes and perceptions of older adults after implementing individualized Music and Memory© playlists. In addition, the inquiry sought to compare pre and post survey responses for changes in rankings of caring for the older adult as a career choice. The qualitative inquiry sought to explore students' perceptions of their experience through narrative journaling for a better understanding of the experience. DESIGN This study used an explanatory sequential mixed design. METHODS A pre post-intervention approach was used for quantitative data collection along with a ranking item for career choices. Journal narratives completed within one week following the experience were explored for qualitative themes to better understand students' experiences. Attitudes and perceptions of students (N = 44) were measured by two tools before and after implementation of Music and Memory© Interventions during a 7-week clinical experience. Student journals were analyzed for themes. RESULTS In the two-tailed paired t-test, nursing students' attitudes and perceptions of caring for older adults were analyzed for differences. Significance improvement was found in students' reported interaction scores and other constructs (p ≤ .01). Mean ranking of caring for the older adult improved from 7.6 to 7.0 in the post intervention analysis. Student journals reported the activity as worthwhile and time consuming. CONCLUSIONS As the baby boomer generation ages the need for residential long-term care is projected to increase significantly. Recruiting and retaining nurses to care for this vulnerable population is challenging. Music and Memory© Interventions have the potential to change student attitudes and perceptions of the older adult that could improve caring for the older adult as a career choice.

Abstract
In recent years, a multitude of intergenerational contact programmes and interventions has emerged to counteract ageism among young adults. Research on these programmes and its supposed effect on ageism often start from the assumption that intergenerational contact follows a largely linear process in which a high level of encounters, in the right setting, decreases ageism and negative stereotyping. The purpose of this article is to critically examine this assumption by focussing on the underlying process of intergenerational contact, rather than examining the positive or negative outcome. Using in-depth interviews with 35 young adults, we found that although conditions and mediating factors during the contact do play a role in the outcome of intergroup contact, the process of contact is rather varied and does not follow a linear path. The results reveal that whether or not a positive contact experience translates into a changed group image of older people is related to the positioning of such experience within the young adults' personal frame of reference. We found that this has to do with the young adults having diverse and both positive and negative previous experiences, their grandparent-grandchild relationship, stories from others and personal characteristics. With this study, we point to the complexity of intergenerational contact and highlight potential pathways leading to varying group images of 'the old'.

Abstract
With the increasing population of older adults, ageism is an obstacle to health equity and can negatively affect older adults’ quality of life and nursing care. This study aims to examine the level of ageism and the factors associated with ageism among nursing college students, who will become the main workforce for gerontological nursing. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 238 nursing students in two nursing colleges in South Korea. The total score for ageism was 37.06 (SD 5.94) out of a maximum of 72. In the multiple regression model, the predictors of ageism were aging anxiety (β = 0.420, p < 0.001), frequency of contact (β = −0.204, p < 0.001), preference for gerontological nursing (β = 0.150, p = 0.003), age (β = 0.145, p = 0.003), and quality of contact (β = −0.143, p = 0.030), revealing that these were factors influencing ageism in the evaluated nursing students. The results suggest that tailored gerontological education programs or community link programs in the nursing curriculum are necessary to share feelings of contact, increase positive experiences with older adults, and reduce anxiety about aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES To examine the change in subjective age with the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Two competing hypotheses were tested: (a) people felt increasingly older due to the stress generated by the pandemic and (b) people felt increasingly younger due to psychological distancing from older age, a vulnerability to COVID-19. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS An age- and sex-stratified sample of adults from across the United States (baseline N = 3,738) was assessed on 3 occasions: before the COVID-19 outbreak in late January/early February and during the outbreak in late March and again in late April. Multilevel modeling analysis examined the change in subjective age and tested potential moderators of individual differences in the trajectory of subjective age. RESULTS The average trajectory of subjective age followed a concave curve, with a nadir (feeling younger) during the second assessment in late March. Older age, negative expectations about aging, absence of preexisting conditions, and less stress during COVID-19 were associated with feeling younger but did not predict the rate of change. The only significant predictor of change in subjective age was the belief that the "coronavirus is only a threat to older adults": The more individuals agreed with this statement, the more likely it was that they felt increasingly younger at follow-up. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS Subjective age changed during a global health crisis, with people feeling younger with the emergence of COVID-19. The findings support the hypothesis that subjective age partly reflects a coping process of psychological distancing from older age, the age group most vulnerable to COVID-19.

Abstract
To reduce and slow the spread of the coronavirus during the pandemic, people throughout countries are asked to adopt a series of prevention behaviours such as keeping physical distance and using protective devices (containment behaviours). Vulnerability of older people during the pandemic has been stressed by mass‐media and in political communication, calling for protection of this sector of the population. Based on intergroup contact theory and on the stereotype content model, I conducted a correlational study during the coronavirus lockdown in Italy, analysing contact with older people before the pandemic, ageism, and containment behaviours. Quality of contact with older people, favourable attitudes toward older people, and benevolent ageism were found to be positively associated with containment behaviours. Findings suggest that positive intergenerational relations are likely beneficial for public health.

Abstract
Objectives: We test whether the association between state
religiosity and distance traveled is moderated by population age during the
novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Mobility is
operationalized as the state-level average median distance traveled from
February 24 to May 4 across the contiguous United States. Shelter-in-place rates
are operationalized as the state-level percentage of users staying home. State
religiosity is measured with an index of aggregated religious identities,
beliefs, and practices. Population age is indicated by the state percentage of
adults aged 65 years and older. We model population mobility using regression
with state clustered robust SEs. Results: We
observe that religious states tend to travel more during the early stages of the
pandemic. However, the behavioral risks associated with state religiosity are
less pronounced in states with larger older populations.
Discussion: We contribute to our understanding of the social
patterning of pandemic mobility in aging populations.

What explains ageism towards older people? Several answers exist in the literature, but it is still unclear whether the ageism people express has been altered by motivational forces (i.e. factors which carry or enact motivation, leading to action or thought) or whether an original, primal ageism can be expressed directly. Investigating populations of young adults (45 and younger), this article suggests that value systems are sources of internal and external motivational forces which work to either suppress or to justify both subtle and blatant forms of ageism. It was hypothesised that, at the individual level, values precede any threat perception and negative stereotypical beliefs associated with older people, leading to forms of ageism which match the motivational goals of a person's values. It was further expected that, at the cultural level, values represent the climate in which people express ageist beliefs. It was found that self-transcendence values can bypass the negative effects of threat perception and negative stereotypes, resulting in less-negative forms of ageism. A sample comprising a clear majority of hierarchical, non-Western cultures showed that self-enhancement values also contributed motivational strength for the suppression of blatant ageism. A practical implication of these findings is the possibility of further developing existing strategies of combating ageism by working to effect appropriate long-term changes in the values of young adults.

Abstract
Abstract. This paper explores the impact of growing up with an older adult in the home on one’s attitudes toward older adults. We surveyed 309 participants for their opinions on older adults, whether they grew up living with an older adult, and whether the older adult they lived with was ill. Those who grew up with an older adult had significantly lower opinions of the elderly but had less anxiety around their own aging process. This negative impact of contact seemed especially pronounced if the older adult was ill. Results indicate that although contact in and of itself can have a positive benefit on opinions toward the elderly, the nature of the relationship impacts the effectiveness of the contact.

Abstract
The authors conducted a systematic review of factors that moderate the influence of intergenerational contact on ageism. MEDLINE (using PubMed), EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Proquest databases were searched, using terms and keywords including intergenerational conflict, intergenerational relation, intergeneration gap, and ageism, and no date restrictions. The search yielded a total of 247 articles, of which 23 met eligibility criteria for the review. Findings revealed that the experience of ageism for older adults is widespread and highly prevalent in Western and Eastern countries. In addition, culture, age, and gender played important roles in young people's decisions to contact older adults. These factors were important moderators of intergenerational relationships and ageism. Robust, trans-disciplinary research is needed to examine factors related to intergenerational relations, particularly with older adults in clinical populations. Abstract
This study explores young adults' emotional affect and attitudes towards ageing, as well as older adults' emotional affect and self-esteem following participation in the intergenerational videoconferencing programme Smile Connect (SC). The sample consisted of 94 participants (46 older Spanish adults living in a care home in Spain and 48 young Italian adults -secondary students- learning Spanish at school in Italy). Each age group was divided into an intervention and control group. SC consists of twelve 30-minute chat sessions conducted via Skype between the target groups over six weeks. Pre and post evaluations were made to assess the affect level in both groups, self-esteem among older people, and the level of negative stereotypes about ageing among young adults. At the end of the SC, the intervention group of older adults recorded significantly improved scores in self-esteem compared to the control group. Young adults recorded a reduction in their negative stereotypes about old age after taking part in the SC programme compared to those who did not. These findings suggest that involvement in the SC programme helps to improve the emotional affect of older adults living in care homes, as well as change the negative stereotypes about ageing among young adults.

Abstract
Ageism is a widespread phenomenon and constitutes a significant threat to older people's well-being. Identifying the factors contributing to ageism is critical to inform policies that minimise its societal impact. In this systematic review, we gathered and summarised empirical studies exploring the key determinants of ageism against older people for a period of over forty years (1970-2017). A comprehensive search using fourteen databases identified all published records related to the umbrella concept of "ageism". Reviewers independently screened the final pool to identify all papers focusing on determinants, according to a predefined list of inclusion and exclusion criteria. All relevant information was extracted and summarised following a narrative synthesis approach. A total of 199 papers were included in this review. We identified a total of 14 determinants as robustly associated with ageism. Of these, 13 have an effect on other-directed ageism, and one on self-directed ageism. The quality of contact with older people and the positive or negative presentation of older people to others emerged as the most robust determinants of other-directed ageism; self-directed ageism is mostly determined by older adults' health status. Given the correlational nature of most studies included in this review, inferences on causality should be made cautiously.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Ageism is of increasing concern due to the growing older population worldwide and youth-centered focus of many societies. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The current investigation tested the PEACE (Positive Education about Aging and Contact Experiences) model for the first time. Two online experimental studies examined 2 key factors for reducing ageism: education about aging (providing accurate information about aging) and extended contact (knowledge of positive intergenerational contact) as well as their potential combined effect (education plus extended contact). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In Study 1, 354 undergraduates in all 3 experimental conditions (vs. control participants) reported less negative attitudes toward older adults (delayed post-test) and greater aging knowledge (immediate and delayed post-tests), when controlling for pre-study attitudes. In Study 2, 505 national community participants (ages 18-59) in all experimental conditions (vs. control participants) reported less negative attitudes toward older adults (immediate post-test) and greater aging knowledge (immediate and delayed post-tests). In summary, across 2 online studies, education about aging and knowledge of intergenerational extended contact improved attitudes toward older adults and aging knowledge. IMPLICATIONS Thus, brief, online ageism-reduction strategies can be an effective way to combat ageism. These strategies hold promise to be tested in other settings, with other samples, and to be elaborated into more in-depth interventions that aim to reduce ageism in everyday culture.

Abstract
AIMS To synthesize the findings of qualitative research exploring the experiences of being involved in intergenerational interventions in older people's care settings. DESIGN A meta-synthesis of the qualitative literature, employing Sandelowski and Barroso's method, was conducted. DATA SOURCES Eight databases were searched in March 2017. REVIEW METHODS The PRISMA statement was used for reporting the different phases of the literature search and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) qualitative research checklist was used as an appraisal framework. Data synthesis was conducted using Sandelowski and Barroso's method. RESULTS Four qualitative studies were included in the meta-synthesis. Thematic analysis revealed four themes: 'Recreating the family'; 'Building intergenerational empathy and respect'; 'Uplifting and energizing'; and 'Engagement risks and challenges'. CONCLUSION The meta-synthesis strengthens the evidence that intergenerational interventions can be positive. However, it also shows that there may also be some negative aspects if not planned or managed carefully. IMPACT This review contributes to the body of evidence by synthesizing the experiences of older people and children involved in intergenerational interventions. Although qualitative literature supports the quantitative evidence that intergenerational interventions can have a positive effect, intergenerational interventions could also have negative effects on some participants. Older people may feel tired, or experience feelings of infantilization. Practitioners need to be more aware of the potential negative effects of intergenerational interventions and include risk assessment, possibly by requiring ethical scrutiny.
