Abstract
BACKGROUND Maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) with lateral approach has undergone considerable changes since its inception, mainly due to the introduction of a variety of grafting materials and surgical protocols, with the aim of providing predictable and durable support to implants and improving treatment outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the performance of MSFA in terms of graft stability and implant survival, based on randomized clinical trials. METHODS The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO. An electronic search was performed on Medline, Embase, and CENTRAL databases, integrated with hand-searching on the main pertinent Journals and search of gray literature. Randomized studies on MSFA with a lateral approach reporting on radiographic changes in graft height or volume after at least six months of healing, implant survival, and marginal bone level changes after at least 12 months of loading were included. Two independent reviewers selected the studies. Studies included underwent data extraction and risk of bias assessment using the ROB 2.0 Cochrane tool. RESULTS Out of 3922 studies retrieved, 49 studies (57 articles) were included for data extraction and qualitative analysis. These studies reported on 1265 patients and 1722 MSFA procedures. Thirteen studies were at low risk, 30 had some concerns, and six were at high risk of bias. No quantitative synthesis was possible due to the characteristics of the studies and their methodology. The overall implant survival rate ranged from 84.6% to 100% without evidence of any relevant difference related to the grafting material. CONCLUSION The results of this review, based on descriptive statistics, may suggest that the success of the lateral MSFA procedure is independent of the graft type, at least in the short term. To verify this interpretation, formal statistical analyses on trustworthy and more detailed clinical data are needed. Also, long-term data on graft dimensional stability from evidence-based studies are needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of using ozone gel with transcrestal sinus elevation using osteotomes, on the bone width and the buccal plate of bone thickness around the implants placed simultaneously. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 30 sinuses with an average residual alveolar bone height ranging from 4-7 mm participated in this randomized controlled clinical trial. Following a closed sinus lift procedure, patients were randomized into two groups: one for the ozone gel recipient group and the other for control group. Cone beam computed tomography was carried out both immediately and four months postoperatively. Radiographic evaluations were performed to assess bone width and labial plate thickness at both crestal and midcrestal levels. RESULTS Radiographic analysis revealed that the mean bone width of the control group after four months postoperative was (8.54 ± 1.46 mm) compared to (8.96 ± 1.66 mm) in the study group, which was statistically insignificant (P ≤ .0.05). The mean labial plate of bone thickness value of the control group after four months postoperative was (1.86 ± 0.63 mm) compared to (1.89 ± 0.51 mm) in the study group. Although the bone dimensions in the study group was higher than the control group, it was statistically insignificant (P ≤ .0.05). CONCLUSION When compared to the graftless group, the ozone gel recipient group showed non-significant difference in the results in terms of bone width and thickness. Both methods, nevertheless, produced outcomes that were acceptable. TRIAL REGISTRATION This study protocol was retrospectively registered on the trial registry "Clinical trials.gov PRS". CLINICALTRIALS gov ID is: NCT06604819 and the registration date is 20/9/2024.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Implant dentistry is currently being revolutionized by breakthroughs in techniques, technology, and material, there are few systematic reviews and meta-analyses that examine the effects of utilizing different bone graft substitutes in immediate implant placement surgeries. AIM The purpose of this research is to systematically review and meta-analyze the effect that different bone graft substitutes have on implant stability when concurrently utilized in patients undergoing immediate implant surgeries. METHODOLOGY The PICO criteria were used to construct the focused question, and the systematic review has been outlined as per the PRISMA guidelines. The revised Cochrane risk-of-bias method for randomized trials was used to assess the risk of bias for the selected articles. To derive estimates for the results, random effects meta-analysis was conducted on the selected articles. RESULTS The electronic databases were searched and a total of 1583 articles were identified. After title and abstract screening and due to problems in retrieval a further 1358 articles were eliminated. Fifteen articles were finally chosen to be qualified for review. Of which full text evaluation of 5 articles were found to meet the eligibility criteria and were therefore included in the systematic review. CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis on the stability of dental implants and bone graft substitutes in immediate implant surgery, was unable to draw any conclusions and established no statistically significant correlation between the different types of grafts used and implant stability.

Abstract
Background: The measurement of Hounsfield units (HU) during implant treatment planning is important. Currently, various manufacturers' implant planning software programs offer HU capabilities; however, their accuracy remains unverified. In this study, we aimed to validate the accuracy of HU values measured by implant planning software programs. Methods: This study used one type of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), two types of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and four implant planning software packages. Three specimens were prepared for the evaluation of HUs, and the standard values of the HUs were measured. Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data obtained from MDCT and CBCT were loaded into four implant planning software packages to measure the HU values. The HU and reference values of the four implant planning software programs obtained from MDCT and CBCT were compared. Additionally, the HU values between each implant planning software program were compared. Results: The HU values of the three specimens, as measured using the four implant planning software programs utilizing MDCT, did not exhibit a significant difference from the standard values. Conversely, those obtained from CBCT were significantly different. The measured HU values after the MDCT imaging of the specimens were not significantly different between the implant planning software programs; however, they differed after CBCT imaging. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that it is not possible to measure HU values using CBCT with implant planning software programs. However, HU values can be measured by any implant planning software using MDCT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the three-dimensional stability and morphologic changes of tent space after the osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) procedures without bone grafts. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-six implants placed using the OSFE technique with simultaneous implant placement without bone grafts were included in this retrospective study. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of the augmented sinuses were obtained pre- and postoperatively up to 48 months of follow-up. The maxillary sinus cavity profiles were outlined using three-dimensional virtual reconstruction and superimposition of CBCT scans. The three-dimensional changes in the tent space were measured. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was used to explore potential factors. RESULTS The implant survival rate was 97.8%. The mean volume of remaining tent space immediately after surgery was 96.8 ± 70.5 mm3, shrinking to 31.0 ± 24.9 mm3 after 48 months, while the mean percentage of remaining tent space volume decreased to 29.1 ± 20.7%. The tent space volume and the percentage of residual tent space volume only decreased significantly within 12 months after surgery (p = .008, .013). GEE results indicated positive correlations between the percentage of remaining tent space volume and implant protrusion length (p = .000) and apical height (p = .000), with a negative correlation between the sinus floor area immediately after surgery (p = .002) and the healing time (p = .022). CONCLUSIONS The volume of the tent space rapidly shrank after OSFE without bone grafts. Several factors might influence the tent space stability. Long-term clinical trials with larger sample sizes are necessary to further validate the results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the clinical benefits of adding NanoBone® with split-crest technique and simultaneous implant placement covered with platelet-rich fibrin membrane in horizontally deficient maxillary ridges in terms of crestal and horizontal bone changes and patient morbidity. METHODS Forty patients indicated for maxillary ridge splitting and simultaneous implant placement were assigned randomly to the study groups: control group (Platelet Rich Fibrin membrane) and test group (Platelet Rich Fibrin membrane + Nanobone®). The Cone Beam Computed Tomography Fusion technique was utilized to assess crestal and horizontal bone changes after five months of the surgical procedure. Patient morbidity was recorded for one week post-surgical. RESULTS Five months post-surgical, buccal crestal bone resorption was 1.26 ± 0.58 mm for the control group and 1.14 ± 0.63 mm for the test group. Lingual crestal bone resorption was 1.40 ± 0.66 mm for the control group and 1.47 ± 0.68 mm for the test group. Horizontal bone width gain was 1.46 ± 0.44 mm for the control group and 1.29 ± 0.73 mm for the test group. There was no significant statistical difference between study groups regarding crestal and horizontal bone changes and patient morbidity. CONCLUSIONS The tomographic assessment of NanoBone® addition in this study resulted in no statistically significant difference between study groups regarding crestal and horizontal bone changes and patient morbidity. More randomized controlled clinical trials on gap fill comparing different bone grafting materials versus no grafting should be conducted. Abstract
Several studies suggest that oral pathogenic biofilms cause persistent oral infections. Among these is periodontitis, a prevalent condition brought on by plaque biofilm. It can even result in tooth loss. Furthermore, the accumulation of germs around a dental implant may lead to peri-implantitis, which damages the surrounding bone and gum tissue. Furthermore, bacterial biofilm contamination on the implant causes soft tissue irritation and adjacent bone resorption, severely compromising dental health. On decontaminated implant surfaces, however, re-osseointegration cannot be induced by standard biofilm removal techniques such as mechanical cleaning and antiseptic treatment. A family of nanoparticles known as nanozymes (NZs) comprise highly catalytically active multivalent metal components. The most often employed NZs with antibacterial activity are those that have peroxidase (POD) activity, among other types of NZs. Since NZs are less expensive, more easily produced, and more stable than natural enzymes, they hold great promise for use in various applications, including treating microbial infections. NZs have significantly contributed to studying implant success rates and periodontal health maintenance in periodontics and implantology. An extensive analysis of the research on various NZs and their applications in managing oral health conditions, including dental caries, dental pulp disorders, oral ulcers, peri-implantitis, and bacterial infections of the mouth. To combat bacteria, this review concentrates on NZs that imitate the activity of enzymes in implantology and periodontology. With a view to the future, there are several ways that NZs might be used to treat dental disorders antibacterially.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess endo-sinus bone gain (ESBG) and bone density (BD) following maxillary sinus membrane elevation without graft (test) compared with maxillary sinus floor augmentation and 1:1 ratio of autogenous bone from the buccal antrostomy and deproteinized porcine bone mineral (control) using two- and three-dimensional radiographic methods. Forty healthy patients were randomly allocated to the test and control groups. Cone beam computed tomography scans were obtained at enrolment (T0), immediately after surgery (T1), at delivery of the prosthetic rehabilitation (T2), and 1 year after functional implant loading (T3). Mean differences were expressed with the 95% confidence interval. Significance was set at ≤ 0.05. ESBG and BD were significantly higher in the control group than test group at T1, T2, and T3 (P < 0.001). A significant decrease in ESBG and increase in BD was observed from T1 to T3 with both treatments (P < 0.001). There was a non-significant positive correlation of ESBG with implant protrusion length and non-significant negative correlation with residual bone height. In conclusion, test was associated with significantly lower ESBG and BD compared with control. However, the lower ESBG and BD did not appear to negatively affect the implant stability quotient or implant treatment outcome after 1 year of functional implant loading.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Our goal was to systematically review the current evidence comparing the relative effectiveness of two maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) approaches (internal and external) without bone grafts with that of conventional/grafted MSFE in patients undergoing implantation in the posterior maxilla. MATERIAL AND METHODS Medical databases (PubMed/Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) were searched for randomised controlled trials published between January 1980 and May 2023. A manual search of implant-related journals was also performed. Studies published in English that reported the clinical outcomes of MSFE with or without bone material were included. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook Risk Assessment Tool. Meta-analyses and trial sequence analyses were performed on the included trials. Meta-regression analysis was performed using pre-selected covariates to account for substantial heterogeneity. The certainty of evidence for clinical outcomes was assessed using GRADEpro GDT online (Guideline Development Tool). RESULTS Seventeen studies, including 547 sinuses and 696 implants, were pooled for the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference between MSFE without bone grafts and conventional MSFE in terms of the implant survival rate in the short term (n = 11, I2 = 0%, risk difference (RD): 0.03, 95% confidence intervals (CI): -0.01-0.07, p = 0.17, required information size (RIS) = 307). Although conventional MSFE had a higher endo-sinus bone gain (n = 13, I2 = 89%, weighted mean difference (WMD): -1.24, 95% CI: -1.91- -0.57, p = 0.0003, RIS = 461), this was not a determining factor in implant survival. No difference in perforation (n = 13, I2 = 0%, RD = 0.03, 95% CI: -0.02-0.09, p = 0.99, RIS = 223) and marginal bone loss (n = 4, I2 = 0%, WMD = 0.05, 95% CI: -0.14-0.23, p = 0.62, no RIS) was detected between the two groups using meta-analysis. The pooled results of the implant stability quotient between the two groups were not robust on sensitivity analysis. Because of the limited studies reporting on the visual analogue scale, surgical time, treatment costs, and bone density, qualitative analysis was conducted for these outcomes. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review revealed that both non-graft and grafted MSFE had high implant survival rates. Owing to the moderate strength of the evidence and short-term follow-up, the results should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to evaluate the 1-year implant outcome and patient-related outcome measures (PROMs) after maxillary sinus membrane elevation and coagulum (test) compared with maxillary sinus floor augmentation and a 1:1 ratio of autogenous bone graft from the buccal antrostomy and deproteinised porcine bone mineral (DPBM) (control). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients (30 female, 10 male) with a mean age of 50 years (range 25-71 years) and an alveolar ridge height between 4 and 7 mm were randomly allocated to test or control. Outcome measures included survival of suprastructures and implants, implant stability quotient, health status of the peri-implant tissue, peri-implant marginal bone loss, frequency of complications and PROMs using Oral Health Impact Profile-14 combined with questionnaires assessing patient's perception of the peri-implant soft tissue, implant crown, function of the implant, and total implant treatment outcome using visual analogue scale. Mean differences were expressed with standard deviation and 95% confidence interval. Level of significance was 0.05. RESULTS All suprastructures and implants were well-functioning after 1-year of functional implant loading. No significant difference in any of the applied outcome measures was observed between test and control. Both treatments revealed high patient satisfaction scores and significant improvement in oral health-related quality of life. CONCLUSION There were no significant differences in implant outcome and PROMs between test and control, after 1-year of functional implant loading. Neither of the treatments can therefore be considered better than the other. Thus, long-term randomized controlled trials are needed before definitive conclusions can be provided about the two treatment modalities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The main purpose of this study was to evaluate whether large granular bovine bone can be as effective as small granular bovine bone in maxillary sinus floor elevation. METHODS A comprehensive online search of eligible articles was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science, and a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed from establishment to February, 2023. The outcome indicators were the percentage of connective tissue, the percentage of newly formed bone and the percentage of residual xenograft respectively. The meta-analysis was conducted by using the Stata 15.1 (Stata Conpernarn, USA) and Review Manager software5.4.1. RESULTS After careful screening and review, a total of 4 studies were included for systematic review and meta-analysis. The data were extracted to compare the histological performance of bovine bones with different particle sizes after maxillary sinus elevation. No significant differences were found in the percentage of connective tissue, the percentage of newly formed bone, and the percentage of residual xenograft. CONCLUSION In this study, a systematically review of the previous literature showed that similar histological results were obtained for both large-particle bovine bone and small-particle bovine bone. Therefore, the large granular bovine bone and the small granular bovine bone were equally effective in maxillary sinus elevation. It is difficult to make conclusion from limited evidence from four studies. More clinical evidence was needed.

Abstract
Due to their superior antibacterial properties, biocompatibility and high conductivity, nanomaterials have shown a broad prospect in the biomedical field and have been widely used in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. Also due to their small particle sizes and biodegradability, nanomaterials can provide solutions for tissue engineering, especially for oral tissue rehabilitation and regeneration. At present, research on nanomaterials in the field of dentistry focuses on the biological effects of various types of nanomaterials on different oral diseases and tissue engineering applications. In the current review, we have summarized the biological effects of nanoparticles on oral diseases, their potential action mechanisms and influencing factors. We have focused on the opportunities and challenges to various nanomaterial therapy strategies, with specific emphasis on overcoming the challenges through the development of biocompatible and smart nanomaterials. This review will provide references for potential clinical applications of novel nanomaterials in the field of oral medicine for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to analyze the effect of the apex coverage by the bone graft, including exposure and coverage less than or greater than 2 mm on implant survival rate and peri-implant bone and soft tissue remodeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 264 implants in 180 patients who had undergone transcrestal sinus floor elevation (TSFE) with simultaneous implant placement were included in this retrospective cohort study. Radiographic assessment was used to categorize the implants into three groups based on apical implant bone height (ABH): ≤ 0 mm, < 2 mm, or ≥ 2 mm. The implant survival rate, peri-implant marginal bone loss (MBL) during short-term (1-3 years) and mid- to long-term (4-7 years) follow-up, and clinical parameters were used to evaluate the effect of implant apex coverage after TSFE. RESULTS Group 1 had 56 implants (ABH ≤ 0 mm), group 2 had 123 implants (ABH > 0 mm, but < 2 mm), and group 3 had 85 implants (ABH ≥ 2 mm). There was no significant difference in the implant survival rate between groups 2 and 3 compared to group 1 (p = 0.646, p = 0.824, respectively). The MBL during short-term and mid- to long-term follow-up indicated that apex coverage could not be considered a risk factor. Furthermore, apex coverage did not have a significant effect on other clinical parameters. CONCLUSIONS Despite limitations, our study found that implant apex coverage by the bone graft, including exposure and coverage levels less than or greater than 2 mm, did not significantly affect implant survival, short-term or mid- to long-term MBL, or peri-implant soft tissue outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Based on 1- to 7-year data, the study suggests that implant apical exposure and coverage levels of less than or greater than 2 mm bone graft are both valid options for TSFE cases.

Abstract
Following trauma, chronic periapical process, or tooth extraction, a large loss of bone volume is noticed during the healing process. To facilitate the placement of dental implants, various surgical procedures are used for an optimal alveolar ridge profile, while maintaining adequate bone dimensions. The main aim of this study was to determine the healing ability (histologically and immunohistologically) of alveolar bone defects during augmentation with two different biomaterials: injectable biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) and anorganic bovine bone (ABB). Thirty-eight subjects were randomly divided into two groups. The first group received the tested bone substitute biomaterial (BSB), i.e., BCP (maxresorb inject®), and the second group received an alternative to the gold standard, i.e., ABB (Bio-Oss®). The histopathological, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical analyses gave comparable results for these bone substitute materials in terms of newly formed bone: (BCP: 39.91 ± 8.49%, ABB: 41.73 ± 13.99%), residual biomaterial (BCP: 28.61 ± 11.38%, ABB: 31.72 ± 15.52%), and soft tissue (BCP: 31.49 ± 11.09%, ABB: 26.54 ± 7.25%), with no significant difference found between the groups (p < 0.05, t-test), proving that BCP is equally suitable and successful for alveolar bone regeneration.

Abstract
Oral disease, as a class of diseases with very high morbidity, brings great physical and mental damage to people worldwide. The increasing burden and strain on individuals and society make oral diseases an urgent global health problem. Since the treatment of almost all oral diseases relies on materials, the rapid development of advanced materials and technologies has also promoted innovations in the treatment methods and strategies of oral diseases. In this review, we systematically summarized the application strategies in advanced materials and technologies for oral diseases according to the etiology of the diseases and the comparison of new and old materials. Finally, the challenges and directions of future development for advanced materials and technologies in the treatment of oral diseases were refined. This review will guide the fundamental research and clinical translation of oral diseases for practitioners of oral medicine.

Abstract
Background Periodontal diseases when persistent, results in periodontal pockets, attachment loss and progressive destruction of the alveolar bone. Grafting periodontal bone defects with bone substitute biomaterials has proven clinical success for accomplishing reconstruction of lost attachment apparatus, especially in deep intra-bony defects. Nanoparticles (NPs) have been considered indispensable in the future of health sciences and NP based alloplastic graft materials such as nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (NCHA) hold great promise for regeneration of periodontal defects. Therefore the aim of this review is to evaluate the role of NCHA as an effective substitute for periodontal bone regeneration. Material & methods Popular scientific databases such as PubMed (Medline), Cochrane database of clinical trials, Scopus (Elsevier), Web of science (Clarivate Analytics) and Google Scholar, were searched. The literature search was restricted to published reports in English, between January 2000 and December 2021. Database search returned 1227 results which were screened based on title, author names and publication dates. Results Data from the 14 included studies were reviewed and tabulated. In the present review, all the studies reported using commercially available NCHA for periodontal bone regeneration. Conclusion NCHA is a suitable bone substitute material for periodontal bone regeneration, with outcomes comparable to that of conventionally used graft materials such as bovine xenograft and other synthetic alloplastic materials. While grafting with NCHA in intrabony periodontal defects, after any form of periodontal flap surgery or debridement, significantly improves bone regeneration by 6 months, addition of adjuncts like EMD and PRF further enhance the outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A novel type of implant (Straumann® BLX implant) has been developed for certain stability from the mechanical and biological aspects and is expected for the implant placement in atrophic maxilla with sinus floor elevation (SFE). PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the primary stability in the implants with different macrodesigns in an SFE simulated model. Primary stabilities defined as maximum insertion torque (MIT) and implant stability quotient (ISQ) were compared between this novel type of implant and other types. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five types of Straumann® 10 mm length implants (Standard Plus; SP, Tapered Effect; TE, Bone Level; BL, Bone Level Tapered; BLT and BLX) and two types of Straumann® 6 mm length implants (SP short, BLX short) were used in this study. Each implant was inserted through 5 mm-thick porcine iliac crest blocks (an SFE simulated model). Primary stability was evaluated by using MIT and ISQ. RESULTS The mean value of MIT for BLX group showed significantly higher values than SP, BL (p < 0.01), and TE (p < 0.05) groups. The mean value of ISQ for BLX group was significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.01). The mean value of MIT and ISQ for BLX and BLX short group were significantly higher than those for SP and SP short group (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS In an SFE simulated ex vivo model, BLX group showed the highest values. These results suggest that implant selection can play a crucial role in the achievement of primary stability during SFE and simultaneous implant placement.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to see how a nanohydroxyapatite (n-HA) composite polyamide 66 (PA66) affected the repair of bone defects in diabetics with titanium implants, as well as to develop experimental materials for the creation of the interface between bone tissue and titanium implants. Rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were isolated using n-HA/PA66 composite material, and the effect of coculture with the material on cell proliferation was analyzed after induction of mineralization. Bone defect models of diabetic experimental rabbits and titanium implants were prepared. Normal rabbits with bone defects were used as control (NC group, N = 8). After the diabetic bone defect (DM group, N = 8) and the implantation of n-HA/PA66 composite material (n-HA/PA66 group, N = 8), the differences in body weight, blood glucose, scanning electron microscopy of the implant-bone interface, bone mineral density, new bone trabecular parameters, histomorphology, and biomechanical properties of the implant-bone interface were compared and analyzed. In vitro test results showed that MSC cell growth could be promoted by mineralization induction, the cell growth condition was good after coculture with n-HA/PA66, and the proliferation activity of MSCs was not affected by the material. In vivo test results showed that the body weight of the DM group and n-HA/PA66 group was considerably inferior to that of the NC group, and the blood glucose was dramatically superior to that of the NC group (P < 0.05). However, the body weight of the n-HA/PA66 group was dramatically superior to that of the DM group (P < 0.05). The bone mineral density, bone volume fraction (BV/TV), bone surface area fraction (BS/BV), bone trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), bone trabecular number (Tb.N), bone trabecular area, and biomechanical properties in the DM group were considerably inferior to those in the NC group and n-HA/PA66 group (P < 0.05). The trabecular space (Tb.Sp) in the NC group and n-HA/PA66 group was dramatically superior to that in the NC group (P < 0.05). The bone mineral density, BV/TV, BS/BV, Tb.Th, Tb.N, trabecular area, and biomechanical properties of the n-HA/PA66 group were dramatically superior to those of the NC group (P < 0.05), while Tb.Sp was considerably inferior to that of the NC group (P < 0.05). These findings showed that the n-HA/PA66 material had good biocompatibility and minimal cytotoxicity, and that filling the space between the surrounding bone and the titanium implant can enhance bone repair. This research paved the way for future research into the tissue-engineered bone in the field of oral surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The effect of different deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) particle sizes on bone healing in maxillary sinus floor augmentation remains unclear. This study compared the newly formed tissue and angiogenesis-related bone healing after sinus floor augmentation using large or small DBBM particles. MATERIALS AND METHODS Overall 32 patients were randomly divided into two groups using either large (1-2 mm) or small (0.25-1 mm) DBBM particles for sinus floor augmentation. After 6 months, the mineralized tissue volume was calculated using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. The newly formed tissue composition was histomorphometrically analyzed. Angiogenesis was also examined by means of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. Implant failure and marginal bone loss were measured at a 1-year follow-up. Statistical analysis was performed using independent samples t-test. RESULTS Micro-CT analysis demonstrated that grafting with large particles resulted in higher bone volume (6.99 ± 2.72 mm3 , p = 0.002) and Bone Volume/Tissue Volume (0.25 ± 0.1, p = 0.03) compared with small particles (3.76 ± 1.83 mm3 and 0.14 ± 0.13, respectively). Small particles showed higher non-mineralized tissue volume (26.31 mm3 ) compared with large particle group (17.4 ± 5.34 mm3 ) with p = 0.001. The histological data revealed significantly higher area of newly formed bone (32.15% ± 14.04% for the large particle and 15.99% ± 14.12% for the small particle groups, p = 0.004). Likewise, non-mineralized tissue was significantly greater in the small particle group (66.48% ± 20.97%) compared with the large particle group (44.36%, p = 0.016). Moreover, use of large particles resulted in a significantly higher VEGF staining intensity score and VEFG positive cells. No implant failure was recorded in both groups, while no difference was found in terms of marginal bone loss at the 1-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Sinus floor augmentation using large DBBM particles resulted in more angiogenesis expression, higher bone volume, and new bone formation at 6 months after sinus augmentation. However, clinical outcomes with regards to implant placement were similar in both groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Hydroxyapatite bioceramic is a kind of bone implant commonly used in oral clinic treatment. In the early stage of tissue repair, cells will suffer hypoxic due to the interruption of blood supply. OBJECTIVE: Studying the expression of osteoblasts in hypoxic environment will help us to understand the expression and response mechanism of osteoblasts at the implantation site of hydroxyapatite in the early stage of hypoxia. METHODS: MG63 osteoblast cell line was used in this study. The cells of normal group were incubated under normal oxygen and hydroxyapatite ceramics condition. The cells of hypoxia group were incubated under hypoxia (37∘C, 8% CO2, 8% O2, 86% N2) and hydroxyapatite ceramics condition. Cell proliferation was measured by CCK8 assay. Apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was measured by ALP kit. Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: Compared to the normal group, the cells of hypoxia group showed a dramatically higher proliferation ability, especially at 48 h (P< 0.05). Due to hypoxia, cell apoptosis was induced, but there is no difference between these two groups. Interestingly, the ALP activity of hypoxia group was higher than that of normal group at 24 h and 48 h (P< 0.05). Mechanically, western blot result showed that the protein level of both HIF-α and VEGF were up-regulated in hypoxia group. CONCLUSIONS: Under hypoxia condition, hydroxyapatite bioceramics can promote the proliferation of MG63 osteoblasts, elevate the activity of alkaline phosphatase and upregulate HIF-α and VEGF expression without effect on apoptosis.

Abstract
Biomaterials have been widely used in tissue engineering applications at an increasing rate in recent years. The increased clinical demand for safe scaffolds, as well as the diversity and availability of biomaterials, has sparked rapid interest in fabricating diverse scaffolds to make significant progress in tissue engineering. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has drawn substantial attention in recent years owing to its excellent physical, chemical, and biological properties and facile adaptable surface functionalization with other innumerable essential materials. This focused review spotlights a brief introduction on HAP, scope, a historical outline, basic structural features/properties, various synthetic strategies, and their scientific applications concentrating on functionalized HAP in the diverse area of tissue engineering fields such as bone, skin, periodontal, bone tissue fixation, cartilage, blood vessel, liver, tendon/ligament, and corneal are emphasized. Besides clinical translation aspects, the future challenges and prospects of HAP based biomaterials involved in tissue engineering are also discussed. Furthermore, it is expected that researchers may find this review expedient in gaining an overall understanding of the latest advancement of HAP based biomaterials.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has the potential to overcome some of the disadvantages of titanium interbody implants in anterior cervical and discectomy and fusion (ACDF). However, PEEK shows an inferior biological behavior regarding osseointegration and bioactivity. Therefore, the aim of the study was to create a bioactive surface coating on PEEK implants with a unique nanopore structure enabling the generation of a long-lasting interfacial composite layer between coating material and implant. Seventy-two PEEK implants-each thirty-six pure PEEK implants (PI) and thirty-six PEEK implants with a sprayed coating consisting of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (ncHA) embedded in a silica matrix and interfacial composite layer (SPI)-were inserted in the femoral condyles of adult rats using a split-side model. After 2, 4 and 8 weeks, the femur bones were harvested. Half of the femur bones were used in histological and histomorphometrical analyses. Additionally, pull-out tests were performed in the second half. Postoperative healing was uneventful for all animals, and no postoperative complications were observed. Considerable crestal and medullary bone remodeling could be found around all implants, with faster bone formation around the SPI and fewer regions with fibrous tissue barriers between implant and bone. Histomorphometrical analyses showed a higher bone to implant contact (BIC) in SPI after 4 and 8 weeks (p < 0.05). Pull-out tests revealed higher pull-out forces in SPI at all time points (p < 0.01). The presented findings demonstrate that a combination of a bioactive coating and the permanent chemical and structural modified interfacial composite layer can improve bone formation at the implant surface by creating a sustainable bone-implant interface. This might be a promising way to overcome the bioinert surface property of PEEK-based implants.

Abstract
In recent years, nanoparticles (NPs) have been receiving more attention in dentistry. Their advantageous physicochemical and biological properties can improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of numerous oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontal diseases, pulp and periapical lesions, oral candidiasis, denture stomatitis, hyposalivation, and head, neck, and oral cancer. NPs can also enhance the mechanical and microbiological properties of dental prostheses and implants and can be used to improve drug delivery through the oral mucosa. This paper reviewed studies from 2015 to 2020 and summarized the potential applications of different types of NPs in the many fields of dentistry.

Abstract
After tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge undergoes dimensional changes. Different bone regeneration biomaterials are used to reduce bone loss. The aim of this article was to systematically review the literature on the effect of injectable synthetic biomaterials and their advantages and disadvantages for new bone formation in the maxilla and mandible in animals and humans. A literature search was conducted in November 2020 via MEDLINE PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase. Of the 501 records screened, abstract analysis was performed on 49 articles, resulting in 21 studies that met the inclusion criteria. Animal studies have shown heterogeneity in terms of animal models, follow-up time, composition of the injectable biomaterial, and different outcome variables such as bone–implant contact, newly formed bone, and peri-implant bone density. Heterogeneity has also been demonstrated by human studies. The following outcomes were observed: newly formed bone, connective tissue, residual injectable bone graft substitute, radiographic density, residual bone height, and different follow-up periods. Further studies, especially in humans, based on the histological and biomechanical properties of the injectable delivery form, are needed to draw more concrete conclusions that will contribute to a better understanding of the benefits of this type of biomaterials and their role in bone regeneration.

Non-grafted versus grafted sinus lift procedures for implantation in the atrophic maxilla: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Abstract
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to critically evaluate the currently existing clinical evidence on the efficacy of graftless maxillary sinus membrane elevation for implantation in the atrophic posterior maxilla. A search protocol without limitations to November 2020 was followed by two independent researchers. Randomized controlled trials using the lateral window approach for graftless sinus membrane elevation were included. Uncontrolled, retrospective, non-comparative studies, case reports, and experimental studies in animals or cadavers were excluded. The search identified 2777 studies. Critical selection by two independent researchers then led to the inclusion of a total of nine studies. A risk of bias assessment was applied using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials. A meta-analysis was conducted for seven studies. Results showed a high overall implant survival rate in both the graftless and bone-grafted sinus lift groups (97.92% and 98.73%, respectively). The graftless sinus lift group showed a significantly lower vertical bone height gain, with a mean difference of -1.73mm (P=0.01), and a significantly lower bone density, with a mean difference of -94.7 HU (P<0.001). The implant stability quotient values did not differ significantly between the test and control groups (P=0.07).

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study analyzed the influence of implant protrusion length (IPL) on the possible factors that affect the long-term outcomes utilizing non-grafting osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) with simultaneous implant placement, and to explore the optimal range of IPL. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study design was adopted. The clinical and radiographic data of 105 implants in 65 patients were collected after 3-9 (mean 5.04) years follow-up. IPL was divided into three groups (group1, IPL<2mm; group2, 2mm≤IPL<4mm; group3, IPL≥4mm). Endo-sinus bone gain (ESBG), peri-implant marginal bone loss (MBL), bone to implant contact length (BICL), and percentage of ESBG (%ESBG) were used to evaluate non-grafting OSFE. A Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to assess the cumulative survival rate. Multiple linear regression model was used to explore the relationship between the possible influence factors and ESBG. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to explore the correlation of IPL with ESBG, MBL, BICL, and %ESBG. RESULTS A total of 102 implants in 62 patients fulfilled the survival criteria, giving the cumulative survival rates of 96.4% and 94.1% for implant-based analysis and patient-based analysis, respectively. The mean ESBG, MBL, and BICL at the latest follow-up were 1.95±0.88 mm, 0.58±0.68 mm, and 5.51±1.47 mm. ESBG was found to be positively correlated to IPL. A significant decreased bone formation efficiency was found when IPL was over 4 mm (P=0.02). CONCLUSIONS An optimal range of IPL within 4 mm was recommended for better long-term outcomes when applying non-grafting OSFE with simultaneous implant placement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Injectable synthetic bone grafts (ISBG) are widely used biomaterials for regeneration purposes. The aim of this case report was to examine the efficacy of ISBG in the management of buccal fenestration in the case of a 25-year-old female. CASE REPORT After a traumatic tooth extraction, the defect was filled with ISBG and covered with a resorbable membrane. The ISBG showed easy handling and the patient had no complications during healing. Six months after augmentation, a bone biopsy was taken during implant bed preparation. The histological results showed good integration of ISBG into the newly formed bone and no signs of tissue inflammation. Additionally, a CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) analysis was performed to support the histological results. CONCLUSION The use of the examined ISBG led to successful treatment of the buccal fenestration defect.
