Abstract
BACKGROUND Mineral and bone disease in children with chronic kidney disease can cause abnormalities in calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D and when left untreated can result in impaired growth, bone deformities, fractures, and vascular calcification. Cinacalcet is a calcimimetic widely used as a therapy to reduce parathyroid hormone levels in the adult population, with hypocalcemia among its side effects. The analysis of safety in the pediatric population is questioned due to the scarcity of randomized clinical trials in this group. OBJECTIVE To assess the onset of symptomatic hypocalcemia or other adverse events (serious or non-serious) with the use of cinacalcet in children and adolescents with mineral and bone disorder in chronic kidney disease. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA The bibliographic search identified 2699 references from 1927 to August/2023 (57 LILACS, 44 Web of Science, 686 PubMed, 131 Cochrane, 1246 Scopus, 535 Embase). Four references were added from the bibliography of articles found and 12 references from the gray literature (Clinical Trials). Of the 77 studies analyzed in full, 68 were excluded because they did not meet the following criteria: population, types of studies, medication, publication types and 1 article that did not present results (gray literature). PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS There were 149 patients aged 0-18 years old with Chronic Kidney Disease and mineral bone disorder who received cinacalcet. STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS Nine eligible studies were examined for study type, size, intervention, and reported outcomes. RESULTS There was an incidence of 0.2% of fatal adverse events and 16% of serious adverse events (p < 0.01 and I2 = 69%), in addition to 10.7% of hypocalcemia, totaling 45.7% of total adverse events. LIMITATIONS There was a bias in demographic information and clinical characteristics of patients in about 50% of the studies and the majority of the studies were case series. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF KEY FINDINGS If used in the pediatric population, the calcimimetic cinacalcet should be carefully monitored for serum calcium levels and attention to possible adverse events, especially in children under 50 months. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of biomaterials in bone healing of critical bone defects created by piezoelectric surgery in rat calvaria. METHOD AND MATERIALS Histomorphologic analysis was performed to assess bone regeneration and tissue response. Fifty animals were randomized into five groups with one of the following treatments: Control group (n = 10), spontaneous blood clot formation with no bone fill; BO group (Bio-Oss, Geistlich Pharma; n = 10), defects were filled with bovine medullary bone substitute; BF group (Bonefill, Bionnovation; n = 10), defects were filled with bovine cortical bone substitute; hydroxyapatite group (n = 10), defects were filled with hydroxyapatite; calcium sulfate group (n = 10), defects were filled with calcium sulfate. Five animals from each group were euthanized at 30 and 45 days. The histomorphometry calculated the percentage of the new bone formation in the bone defect. RESULTS All data obtained were evaluated statistically considering P < .05 as statistically significant. The results demonstrated the potential of all biomaterials for enhancing bone regeneration. The findings showed no statistical differences between all the biomaterials at 30 and 45 days including the control group without bone grafting. CONCLUSION In conclusion, the tested biomaterials presented an estimated capacity of osteoconduction, statistically nonsignificant between them. In addition, the selection of biomaterial should consider the specific clinical aspect, resorption rates, size of the particle, and desired bone healing responses. It is important to emphasize that in some cases, using no bone filler might provide comparable results with reduced cost and possible complications questioning the very frequent use of ridge presentation procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the radiological and histological outcome after horizontal guided bone regeneration (GBR) with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) alone or in combination with particulate autogenous bone (PAB). MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighteen edentulous patients with an alveolar ridge of ≤4 mm were included in this split-mouth randomized controlled trial. Horizontal GBR with a graft composition of 100% DBBM (100:0) on one side and 90% DBBM and 10% PAB (90:10) on the other side were conducted in all patients. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was obtained preoperatively, immediately postoperative, and after 10 months of healing. Width and volumetric changes in the alveolar process were measured on CBCT. Implants were placed after 10 months of graft healing where biopsies were obtained for histomorphometrical evaluation. RESULTS The gained widths were 4.9 (±2.4) mm (100:0) and 4.5 (±2.0) mm (90:10) at 3 mm from the top of the crest, and 5.6 (±1.3) mm (100:0) and 4.6 (±2.1) mm (90:10) at 6 mm from the top of the crest. The mean volumetric reductions were 32.8% (±23.8) (100:0) and 38.2% (±23.2) (90:10). Histomorphometry revealed that mean percentages of bone were 50.8% (±10.7) (100:0) and 46.4% (±11.3) (90:10), DBBM were 31.6% (±12.6) (100:0) and 35.4% (±14.8) (90:10), and non-mineralized tissue were 17.6% (±11.7; 100:0) and 18.2% (±18.2) (90:10). No significant differences were evident between in any evaluated parameters. CONCLUSIONS There were no additional effects of adding PAB to DBBM regarding bone formation, width changes, or volumetric changes after 10 months of graft healing.

Patients with cancer or with a history of cancer often seek nutritional advice. In turn, cancer health care providers are often asked questions related to nutrition and cancer. Should I take high-dose vitamins or other high-dose supplements? Should I take a regular-dose vitamin or other regular-dose nutritional supplements? Will I experience weight loss during postoperative chemotherapy? What should be my weight goals during and after adjuvant therapy? In the setting of advanced cancer, what should I do to keep my appetite and weight up? This review attempts to provide data-driven answers to some of these commonly posed questions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Calcium-coacervate emulsions (CC) might be considered as mineral precursors to foster remineralization of carious dental hard tissues. This study analyzed the instant effect of repeated infiltration of artificial caries lesions with a CC emulsion as well as the effects of subsequent exposure of CC-infiltrated lesions to demineralizing and remineralizing environments. METHODS Bovine enamel specimens were partly covered with varnish to leave three exposed windows. Artificial enamel caries lesions were created (pH 4.95, 17d). Baseline controls (BL) were obtained by preparing a thin section of each specimen. Specimens were allocated to five groups. In three groups lesions were etched with 37 % phosphoric acid gel, infiltrated with dipotassium hydrogen phosphate and subsequently with a calcium coacervate emulsion, prepared by mixing CaCl2 ⋅ 2H2O with polyacrylic acid sodium salt (PAA-Na). Subsequently, the infiltration effect was either analyzed immediately (Inf.) or after exposition to either de- (Inf.+DS) or remineralizing solution (Inf.+RS) for 10 or 20 days, respectively. In two control groups specimens were exposed to either DS or RS, respectively without prior CC infiltration. Integrated mineral loss [ΔZ(vol%×µm)] was analyzed using transverse microradiography (TMR). RESULTS Infiltration of enamel caries lesions with coacervate solution resulted in only subtle immediate mineral gain even if repeated. When exposed to demineralizing conditions, infiltrated lesions showed significantly less mineral loss compared to untreated controls (p < 0.05; Kruskal Wallis) and exhibited characteristic mineral depositions within the lesion body. CONCLUSIONS While immediate mineral gain by infiltration was only modest, the CC-emulsion might be able to prevent demineralization in acidic conditions. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Calcium coacervates might act protective against further demineralization when infiltrated into enamel caries lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Melatonin, zinc, and multivitamins are among most recommended supplements in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of this association in the treatment of COVID-19 and COVID-like illnesses. METHODS We conducted a multicenter prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial. Patients with no medical history consulting the emergency department for covid and covid-like illness and who were not hospitalized were included. Patients were assigned in a 1:1 ratio to the treatment or the placebo group. The primary outcome was studying the effectiveness of zinc multivitamin supplement and melatonin in the treatment of COVID and -like illnesses symptoms' according to the time from randomization to clinical improvement. The pre-specified secondary outcomes were date of disappearance of symptoms present on admission, appearance of an adverse effect due to the administration of the treatment, number of patients developing complications, requiring hospitalization, requiring respiratory support. RESULTS One hundred sixty four patients were eligible for the study and were randomized to either the treatment group or the placebo group. Overall, 128 of the 164 patients had a PCR for SARS-CoV-2, yielding a positive PCR result in 49.1% of them. Regarding the disappearance of all initial presenting symptoms: on the 5th day of the follow-up, there was a significant difference between the two groups with a p value 0.04;On the 10th day, there was a significant difference too with p value of 0.038. There were no significant differences between the two groups in recovery during the 15th day of follow-up p>0.5. Finally, 100% of patients fully recovered in the treatment group vs 98.8% in the placebo group. No severe adverse events were reported throughout the trial. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that daily doses of Melatonin, zinc and vitamins did significantly reduce the duration of symptoms accelerating its disappearance among patients consulting with COVID-19 or COVID-19 like illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone defects and deep periodontal pockets often exist distal to the second molar after mandibular third molar extraction, seriously threatening the periodontal health of the second molar. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of socket preservation with bone substitute materials on alveolar bone resorption and prevention of the distal periodontal defect of the adjacent tooth after mandibular impacted third molar extraction compared with natural healing. METHODS Ninety-nine patients with mandibular impacted teeth, treated in our hospital from January 2018 to December 2020, were randomly divided into the control and experimental groups. The experimental group underwent minimally invasive tooth extraction and socket preservation using the deproteinised bovine bone mineral, Bio-Oss and the bioabsorbable collagen membrane, Bio-Gide. The control group healed naturally after minimally invasive tooth extraction. The alveolar ridge dimension of the extraction sites, the probing depth, tooth mobility and gingival index on the distal aspect of the mandibular second molars were examined and recorded before and six months after the operations. RESULTS There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the alveolar bone width (P< 0.05) and height (P< 0.05) before and after surgery. The probing depth of the extraction sites in both groups was reduced. CONCLUSION Using Bio-Oss and Bio-Gide to preserve extraction sites of impacted teeth can promote recovery more effectively than natural healing on the height of the distal alveolar bone and the width of the alveolar crest of the second molar and thus improve the periodontal status of the adjacent second molar.

Abstract
This report describes a case of Stage III Grade C periodontitis requiring periodontal regenerative therapy. The patient was a 19-year-old woman who presented with the chief complaint of gingival recession in the incisor region. An initial examination revealed that 45.3% of sites had a probing depth of ≥4 mm and 45.8% bleeding on probing. Radiographic examination showed angular bone resorption in #25, 26, 31, 36, and 46 and horizontal resorption in other regions. Initial periodontal therapy was implemented based on a clinical diagnosis of Stage III Grade C periodontitis (generalized aggressive periodontitis). Occlusal adjustment was also performed at sites showing premature contact (#26 and 36) after suppression of inflammation. Periodontal regenerative therapy using recombinant human fibroblast growth factor (rhFGF) -2 was performed on #25, 26, and 46. Combination therapy with rhFGF-2 and deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) was performed on #31 and 36. A non-incised papillae surgical approach (NIPSA) was used on #31. Periodontal conditions were then re-evaluated and the patient placed on supportive periodontal therapy. Regenerative therapy using rhFGF-2 and DBBM with NIPSA yielded an improvement in clinical parameters and bone resorption. This improvement has been adequately maintained over a 12-month period. Continued care is needed to maintain stable periodontal conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate bone regeneration among three different bone graft materials in a rat calvarum model. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 24 rats had two 5-mm defects placed per calvarial. Rats were divided into four groups: bovine xenograft (XG), demineralized bone matrix (DBM), mineralized bone graft (MBG), and collagen membrane control (CC). Within each group, samples were collected at two time points: 4 weeks (T4) and 8 weeks (T8). Bone regeneration was assessed by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) imaging and was analyzed using MATLAB software. Additionally, the fixed samples were subsequently demineralized for immunohistochemistry and histomorphometry. Slides were mounted and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain as well as bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) markers. The numbers of positive cells/area were calculated for each group and analyzed. RESULTS At 4 weeks, DBM showed low mineral density (7.7%) compared to the control (25.2%), but increased dramatically at 8 weeks (DBM, T8 = 27.6%; CC, T8 = 27.2%). Xenograft material showed an increase in mineral desnity between T4 and T8 (XG, T4 = 25.0%; XG, T8 = 32.3%). MBG remained consistent over the 8-week trial period (MBG, T4 = 30.4%; MBG, T8 = 30.4%). BMP-2 expression was present in cells adherent to all graft materials. RUNX2 expression was also observed in cells adherent to all graft materials, indicating that during the 4- to 8-week healing period, all materials supported osteogenesis. CONCLUSIONS Compared to other materials, the DBM had high osteoinductive properties during the 4- to 8-week time period based on increased mineral content. All materials were associated with immunohistologic evidence of osteogenesis in the rat calvarial defect model.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many techniques have been proposed to address post-extraction ridge resorption, which often represents a concern, especially in the esthetic region. PURPOSE The purpose of the present, prospective, multicenter, single cohort study was to investigate, up to 1 year of function, the effectiveness of a protocol for alveolar ridge preservation involving implants with laser-microgrooved surface immediately placed in fresh extraction sockets. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty eight patients candidate to tooth extraction in the esthetic zone (site 15-25 and 35-45) were treated by immediate placement of a single laser-microgrooved implants with the adjunct of a highly porous anorganic porcine bone mineral matrix and a collagen wound dressing. Peri-implant marginal bone level (MBL) was evaluated at time of loading, 3 and 12 months after loading. Gingival index, plaque index, probing depth, and bleeding on probing were measured at 3, 6, and 12 months after loading. Dimensional changes at implant sites were digitally evaluated using the best-fit superimposition of pre-and post-socket preservation models. Implant aesthetic score (IAS) as well as patients' post-operative quality of life were also evaluated at 12 months. Comparisons between data relative to thick and thin gingival phenotypes were made using Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney test, as appropriate. The significance level was set at p = 0.05. RESULTS No patient dropped out, and 28 implants were evaluated at 12 months post-loading. The overall MBL was found to be 0.92 ± 1.11 mm. Volumetric analysis of superimposed models showed an alveolar bone tissue displacement at the buccal aspect of -0.57 ± 0.52 mm in thin phenotypes and -0.46 ± 0.31 mm in thick phenotypes (p = 0.58, unpaired Student's t-test). No signs of soft tissue recession or esthetically unpleasant buccal gingiva were reported. CONCLUSIONS The clinical protocol herein employed showed benefits in maintaining marginal bone levels and soft tissue contour around post-extraction implants in the esthetic zone.

Abstract
PURPOSE Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) was introduced to minimize postextraction alveolar bone loss and extraction socket remodeling; however, current knowledge of the ARP procedure for nonintact extraction sockets is still limited and inconclusive. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the difference between using deproteinized bovine bone mineral with 10% collagen (DBBM-C) and deproteinized porcine bone mineral with 10% collagen (DPBM-C) when performing ARP procedures in damaged or periodontally compromised extraction sockets based on clinical, radiographic, and profilometric outcomes. METHODS In total, 108 extraction sockets were grafted with 67 DBBM-C and 41 DPBM-C. Changes in radiographic (horizontal width and vertical height) and profilometric outcomes were measured after the ARP procedure and before the implant surgery. Postoperative discomfort (including the severity and duration of pain and swelling), early wound healing outcomes (including spontaneous bleeding and persistent swelling), implant stability, and treatment modalities for implant placement were also assessed. RESULTS Radiographically, the DBBM-C group decreased by -1.70 ± 2.26 mm (-21.50%) and - 1.39 ± 1.85 mm (-30.47%) horizontally and vertically, and the corresponding DPBM-C group decreased by -1.66 ± 1.80 mm (-20.82%) and -1.44 ± 1.97 mm (-27.89%) horizontally and vertically at an average of 5.6 months. There were no serious or adverse complications in any of the cases, and none of the measured parameters differed significantly between the groups. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, ARP with DBBM-C and DPBM-C showed similar clinical, radiographic, and profilometric outcomes in nonintact extraction sockets.

Abstract
X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most common form of hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets. The genetic basis for XLH is loss of function mutations in the phosphate-regulating endopeptidase X-linked (PHEX), which leads to increased circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). This increase in FGF23 impairs activation of vitamin D and attenuates renal phosphate reabsorption, leading to rickets. Previous studies have demonstrated that ablating FGF23 in the Hyp mouse model of XLH leads to hyperphosphatemia, high levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and is not associated with the development of rickets. Studies were undertaken to define a role for the increase in 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels in the prevention of rickets in Hyp mice lacking FGF23. These mice were mated to mice lacking Cyp27b1, the enzyme responsible for activating vitamin D metabolites, to generate Hyp mice lacking both FGF23 and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (FCH mice). Mice were fed a special diet to maintain normal mineral ion homeostasis. Despite normal mineral ions, Hyp mice lacking both FGF23 and Cyp27b1 developed rickets, characterized by an interrupted, expanded hypertrophic chondrocyte layer and impaired hypertrophic chondrocyte apoptosis. This phenotype was prevented when mice were treated with 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D from day 2 until sacrifice on day 30. Interestingly, mice lacking FGF23 and Cyp27b1 without the PHEX mutation did not exhibit rickets. These findings define an essential PHEX-dependent, FGF23-independent role for 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in XLH and have important therapeutic implications for the treatment of this genetic disorder.

Abstract
Background Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating disease that results in permanent paralysis. Currently, there is no effective treatment for SCI, and it is important to identify factors that can provide therapeutic intervention during the course of the disease. Zinc, an essential trace element, has attracted attention as a regulator of inflammatory responses. In this study, we investigated the effect of zinc status on the SCI pathology and whether or not zinc could be a potential therapeutic target. Methods We created experimental mouse models with three different serum zinc concentration by changing the zinc content of the diet. After inducing contusion injury to the spinal cord of three mouse models, we assessed inflammation, apoptosis, demyelination, axonal regeneration, and the number of nuclear translocations of NF-κB in macrophages by using qPCR and immunostaining. In addition, macrophages in the injured spinal cord of these mouse models were isolated by flow cytometry, and their intracellular zinc concentration level and gene expression were examined. Functional recovery was assessed using the open field motor score, a foot print analysis, and a grid walk test. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon rank-sum test and ANOVA with the Tukey-Kramer test. Results In macrophages after SCI, zinc deficiency promoted nuclear translocation of NF-κB, polarization to pro-inflammatory like phenotype and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The inflammatory response exacerbated by zinc deficiency led to worsening motor function by inducing more apoptosis of oligodendrocytes and demyelination and inhibiting axonal regeneration in the lesion site compared to the normal zinc condition. Furthermore, zinc supplementation after SCI attenuated these zinc-deficiency-induced series of responses and improved motor function. Conclusion We demonstrated that zinc affected axonal regeneration and motor functional recovery after SCI by negatively regulating NF-κB activity and the subsequent inflammatory response in macrophages. Our findings suggest that zinc supplementation after SCI may be a novel therapeutic strategy for SCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to compare histomorphometrically evaluated new bone formation, radiographically measured graft stability, and clinical implant outcome between maxillary sinus grafting with either deproteinized porcine bone mineral (DPBM) or deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM). MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty maxillary sinuses were initially included and randomly assigned to the test group (TG; DPBM, n = 15) or control group (CG; DBBM, n = 15). After a healing period (6 months), axially retrieved bone biopsies of the molar region were used for histological/histomorphometric analysis of new bone formations. Additionally, radiographically measured graft stability and clinical implant outcome were assessed. RESULTS Twenty-three sinus sites with 10 sinuses of the TG and 13 of the CG were ultimately available for data and statistical analysis. In the TG, a slightly, but yet significantly (p = .040) higher proportion of new bone formation (TG: 27.7 ± 5.6% vs. CG: 22.9 ± 5.1%) and a lesser (p = .019) amount of connective (non-mineralized) tissue (TG: 47.5 ± 9.5% vs. CG: 56.1 ± 9.5%) was found than in the CG. However, both xenografts showed comparable (n.s.) residual bone graft (TG: 23.7 ± 7.2% vs. CG: 21.1 ± 9.85.6%), bone-to-graft contacts (TG: 26.2 ± 9.8% vs. CG: 30.8 ± 13.8%), similar graft height reduction over time (TG: 12.9 ± 6.7% CG: 12.4 ± 5.8%) and implant survival/success rate (100%). At the 3-year post-loading evaluation, the peri-implant marginal bone loss (TG: 0.52 ± 0.19 mm; CG: 0.48 ± 0.15 mm) and the peri-implant health conditions (TG: 87.5%/CG: 81.2%) did not differ between implants inserted in both xenografts used. CONCLUSIONS The use of DPBM or DBBM for maxillary sinus augmentation is associated with comparable bone formation providing stable graft dimension combined with healthy peri-implant conditions.

Abstract
We read with interest the article by Johnstone et al.1 reporting their vitamin-mineral randomized trial that found that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) showed global benefit over placebo by blinded clinician rating, but not by parent-report CASI-5 composite rating in a population with ADHD and irritability. Because some of the mineral dosing was in potentially toxic ranges, we sought to examine the trial findings. Given that the producing company is promoting their supplement for long-term use,2 the scientific and consumer communities might value some additional information about potential toxicity from long-term dosing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of 10% nanohydroxyapatite in an experimental resin infiltrant on color stability and mineral loss. MATERIAL AND METHODS Bovine enamel blocks were randomized into five groups (n = 27/group): SE (sound enamel); ICL (initial caries lesion); I (Icon®); E (experimental infiltrant); EH (experimental infiltrant containing 10% nanohydroxyapatite). Color evaluation (n = 15) was performed and CIEL*a*b* values were obtained at points T0 (baseline), T1 (14 days immersed on coffee solution), and T2 (28 days immersed) and data were calculated ∆E00, ∆WID, ∆L*, ∆a*, and ∆b*. Cross-sectional microhardness (n = 12) was performed and lesion area (∆S) was calculated. Images were obtained with polarized light optical microscopy at 40 × magnification (n = 5). RESULTS In color stability results, there was significant difference between time (14 and 28 days); ICL demonstrated significant difference among treated groups in all measures (∆L*, ∆a*, ∆b*, ∆E00, ∆WID) regardless of time; I and E demonstrated similar behavior on those measures and EH differed from I in ∆L*. For ∆S, ICL group showed a significant difference compared to I and EH groups, but did not differ from E. CONCLUSION The nanohydroxyapatite incorporation suggested an effective mineral recovery on initial caries lesion in depth; however, it showed high color variation, such as Icon. In terms of ∆S, I and EH had lower mineral loss, suggesting a reinforcement on initial caries lesion. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Commercial and experimental infiltrants containing nanohydroxyapatite present low color stability and might reinforce mineral in initial caries lesion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) has been extensively investigated in various preclinical and clinical studies, yielding favorable results. We aim to evaluate the effects of ARP using collagenated bovine bone mineral (CBBM) alone or particulated bovine bone mineral with a non-cross-linked collagen membrane (PBBM/NCLM) in tooth extraction sockets with buccal dehiscence in an experimental dog model. MATERIALS AND METHODS The mesial roots of three mandibular premolars (P2, P3, and P4) were extracted from six mongrel dogs 4 weeks after inducing dehiscence defects. ARP was randomly performed using two different protocols: 1) CBBM alone and 2) PBBM/NCLM. Three-dimensional (3D) volumetric, micro-computed tomography, and histological analyses were employed to determine changes over a span of 20 weeks. RESULTS In 3D volumetric and radiographic analyses, CBBM alone demonstrated similar effectiveness to PBBM/NCLM in ARP (p > .05). However, in the PBBM/NCLM group (3.05 ± 0.60 mm), the horizontal ridge width was well maintained 3 mm below the alveolar crest compared with the CBBM group (2.11 ± 1.01 mm, p = .002). CONCLUSION Although the radiographic changes in the quality and quantity of bone were not significant between the two groups, the use of PBBM/NCLM resulted in greater horizontal dimensions and more favorable maintenance of the ridge profile.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prostate cancer (PCa) patients treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) have an increased fracture risk. Exploring biomarkers for early bone loss detection is of great interest. METHODS Pre-planned substudy of the ARNEO-trial (NCT03080116): a double blind, randomised, placebo-controlled phase 2 trial performed in high-risk PCa patients without bone metastases between March 2019 and April 2021. Patients were 1:1 randomised to treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist (degarelix) + androgen receptor signalling inhibitor (ARSI; apalutamide) versus degarelix + matching placebo for 12 weeks prior to prostatectomy. Before and following ADT, serum and 24-h urinary samples were collected. Primary endpoints were changes in calcium-phosphate homeostasis and bone biomarkers. FINDINGS Of the 89 randomised patients, 43 in the degarelix + apalutamide and 44 patients in the degarelix + placebo group were included in this substudy. Serum corrected calcium levels increased similarly in both treatment arms (mean difference +0.04 mmol/L, 95% confidence interval, 0.02; 0.06), and parathyroid hormone and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 levels decreased. Bone resorption markers increased, and stable calcium isotope ratios reflecting net bone mineral balance decreased in serum and urine similarly in both groups. INTERPRETATION This exploratory substudy suggests that 12 weeks of ADT in non-metastatic PCa patients results in early bone loss. Additional treatment with ARSI does not seem to more negatively influence bone loss in the early phase. Future studies should address if these early biomarkers are able to predict fracture risk, and can be implemented in clinical practice for follow-up of bone health in PCa patients under ADT. Abstract
BACKGROUND Over-the-counter supplements are commonly used to manage chronic constipation; however, their efficacy remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of food, vitamin or mineral supplements on stool output, gut transit time, symptoms, and quality of life in adults with chronic constipation via a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS Studies were identified using electronic databases, backward citation, and hand-searching abstracts. RCTs reporting administration of food supplements (e.g., fruit extract supplements), vitamin or mineral supplements in adults with chronic constipation were included. Studies administering whole foods (e.g., fruits) were excluded. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed with Cochrane RoB 2.0. Relative risks (RR), mean differences (MD), or standardized mean differences (95% confidence intervals [CI]) were calculated using a random-effects model. KEY RESULTS Eight RCTs (787 participants) were included, investigating kiwifruit (n = 3 RCTs), senna (n = 2), magnesium oxide (n = 2), Ziziphus jujuba (n = 1), and Malva Sylvestris (n = 1) supplements. Kiwifruit supplements did not impact stool frequency (MD 0.24 bowel movements/week [-0.32, 0.80]; p = 0.40) or consistency (MD -0.11 Bristol points [-0.31, 0.09], p = 0.29). Overall, 61% responded to senna and 28% to control; however, this did not reach statistical significance (RR 2.78, [0.93, 8.27]; p = 0.07). Overall, 68% responded to magnesium oxide and 19% to control (RR 3.32 [1.59, 6.92]; p = 0.001). Magnesium oxide improved stool frequency (MD 3.72 bowel movements/week [1.41, 6.03]; p = 0.002) and consistency (MD 1.14 Bristol points [0.48, 1.79]; p = 0.0007). CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES Magnesium oxide supplements are effective at improving cardinal symptoms of chronic constipation. Senna and kiwifruit supplements did not impact symptoms; however, findings were based on a small number of studies. Further research is required to investigate the effect of food supplements (e.g., kiwifruit supplements), as well as their whole food equivalents (e.g., whole kiwifruits) in chronic constipation.

Abstract
The body needs small daily quantities of vitamins and minerals, which are usually obtained from the diet. Intravenous vitamins are used for a few serious medical conditions (eg, malabsorption syndromes with severe vitamin depletion, Wernicke's encephalopathy or critical illness). Intravenous drips containing high doses of various vitamins and minerals (eg, the so-called 'Myers' cocktail') have been promoted in popular culture to 'reduce stress', 'increase energy' or 'boost immunity', with claims that the intravenous route allows faster absorption of vitamins into the bloodstream than if they are taken orally. There is a lack of high-quality evidence to suggest that high-dose vitamin infusions are necessary or offer any health benefit in the absence of a specific vitamin deficiency or medical condition. There may be harms from taking high (non-physiological) quantities of some vitamins and minerals. Licensed forms of injectable vitamins that are prescription-only medicines should not be advertised to the public and should only be supplied and administered by appropriately qualified healthcare professionals.

Abstract
Targeted Selective Treatment (TST) is a gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) control strategy where anthelmintic treatment decisions are made at an individual animal level. TST has been proven to reduce anthelmintic use and subsequently slow down anthelmintic resistance development, however questions remain regarding optimal TST methods and their applicability across farms. In this study, the influence of Mineral and Vitamin (MV) supplementation on optimal energy utilisation (EU) TST thresholds was assessed on three Welsh farms. In total, 360 lambs were split into two groups, MV supplemented and control, and were treated with an anthelmintic against GIN at the midway point of the experiment. Lambs that improved their EU efficiency post treatment were deemed to have benefited from anthelmintic treatment. Optimal EU TST thresholds was determined for each treatment group per farm using Youden's J statistic where the treatment threshold retrospectively exhibiting the greatest combined sensitivity and specificity in correctly identifying lambs benefiting from treatment was deemed to be optimal. Results demonstrated that the optimal EU TST threshold was higher in MV supplemented groups at 0.72, 0.71 and 0.56 versus 0.58, 0.67, 0.51 for control groups on each respective farm. Identification of lambs for TST was more effective when using an optimised EU TST threshold, compared to when using the standard EU TST threshold of 0.66. The study highlights that applying standard EU TST thresholds may not be appropriate on all commercial farms with factors including MV status as noted in this study likely to influence optimal EU TST thresholds. Additional refinement of TST systems can further strengthen their applicability across sheep flocks.

Abstract
Hypertension is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality worldwide. However, studies have shown increased risk of mortality from heart disease and stroke even within the normal blood pressure (BP) range, starting at BPs above 110-115/70-75 mm Hg. Nutraceuticals, such as vitamins and minerals, have been studied extensively for their efficacy in lowering BP and may be of benefit to the general, normotensive population in achieving optimal BP. Our study investigated the effects of six nutraceuticals (Vitamins: C, D, E; Minerals: Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium) on both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in this population. We performed a systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis for all six supplements versus placebo. Calcium and magnesium achieved significant reductions in both SBP and DBP of -1.37/-1.63 mm Hg and -2.79/-1.56 mm Hg, respectively. Vitamin E and potassium only yielded significant reductions in SBP with values of -1.76 mm Hg and -2.10 mm Hg, respectively. Vitamins C and D were not found to significantly lower either SBP or DBP. Future studies should determine optimal dosage and treatment length for these supplements in the general, normotensive population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Low bone density and lack of adequate vertical bone dimension as a result of maxillary sinus pneumatization present some of the most problematic cases for endosseous implant applications in posterior maxillary regions that hinder prosthetic rehabilitation. The overall objectives of the study were to assess the histologic, histomorphometric, and radiologic evaluation of biopsies gathered from maxillary sinuses that were grafted with three different bovine bone particles (Bio-Oss, Cerabone, and Ti-Oss) and analyze the volume of the bone graft and the quantity of new bone formation. METHOD AND MATERIALS Thirty-six patients with < 4 mm of residual ridge height unilaterally in the posterior maxilla were equally divided into three groups, each of which received different bovine bone particles for maxillary sinus augmentation. Six months later, biopsies were harvested for histologic and histomorphometric evaluations. Volumetric changes in maxillary sinus augmentation were analyzed at 1-week and 6-month time-points following maxillary sinus augmentation surgery. RESULTS Histomorphometric and histologic analysis revealed a significant difference between the Ti-Oss group compared with the Bio-Oss and Cerabone groups (P = .011). In terms of residual graft particles and soft tissue, there were no significant differences between groups. 3D volumetric reductions between 1-week (baseline) and 6-month time-points recorded significant graft volume reduction in all groups (P < .05). Significantly greater bone resorption and lower new-bone formation were manifested in the Ti-Oss group in comparison to the other groups. CONCLUSIONS Within the limits of this study, histologic and radiologic results indicated that Bio-Oss and Cerabone could be used efficiently in sinus augmentation procedures, while further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the Ti-Oss material in maxillary sinus augmentation.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of vitamin and/or mineral use among urban Brazilian populations aged 20 years and over and to identify associated factors. Data from the National Survey on Access, Use and Promotion of the Rational Use of Medicines in Brazil (PNAUM) were analyzed and a population-based cross-sectional study with probability sampling was performed in urban areas of Brazil's five geographic regions from September 2013 to February 2014. The estimated prevalence of vitamin and/or mineral use was 4.8% (95%CI: 4.3-5.3), higher in women 6.4% (95%CI: 5.7-7.1) and in the elderly population 11.6% (95%CI: 10.5-12.8). Vitamin and/or mineral use was associated with the following factors: women, 60 years of age or older, economic class A/B, chronic disease(s) and self-perceived health held as average and very poor/poor. Multivitamins and multiminerals were the most used ones with 24.5% (95%CI 20.1-29.4), followed by calcium and vitamin D with 23.4% (95%CI 19.7-27.5). Data suggest that elderly women should be the reference public for actions aimed at promoting rational use. Nationwide epidemiological surveys should increase monitoring of these products to support the analysis of trends.

Abstract
The study aimed to assess the efficacy of using Raloxifene with ultrasonic processing to enhance Bio-Oss®, a bone graft substitute, for maxillary sinus bone height reconstruction. A total of 24 rabbit maxillary sinuses were distributed into three groups, each receiving different treatments: Bio-Oss® only, sonicated Bio-Oss, and sonicated Bio-Oss® with Raloxifene. Surgical procedures and subsequent histomorphometric and immunohistochemistry analyses were conducted to evaluate the bone formation, connective tissue, and remaining biomaterial, as well as the osteoblastic differentiation and maturation of collagen fibers. Results indicated that the sonicated Bio-Oss® and Bio-Oss® groups showed similar histological behavior and bone formation, but the Raloxifene group displayed inflammatory infiltrate, low bone formation, and disorganized connective tissue. The statistical analysis confirmed significant differences between the groups in terms of bone formation, connective tissue, and remaining biomaterial. In conclusion, the study found that while sonicated Bio-Oss® performed comparably to Bio-Oss® alone, the addition of Raloxifene led to an unexpected delay in bone repair. The findings stress the importance of histological evaluation for accurate bone repair assessment and the necessity for further investigation into the local application of Raloxifene. Future research may focus on optimizing bone substitutes with growth factors to improve bone repair.

Abstract
As in 2011, when the Spanish Society of Nephrology (SEN) published the Spanish adaptation to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) universal Guideline on Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD), this document contains an update and an adaptation of the 2017 KDIGO guidelines to our setting. In this field, as in many other areas of nephrology, it has been impossible to irrefutably answer many questions, which remain pending. However, there is no doubt that the close relationship between the CKD-MBD/cardiovascular disease/morbidity and mortality complex and new randomised clinical trials in some areas and the development of new drugs have yielded significant advances in this field and created the need for this update. We would therefore highlight the slight divergences that we propose in the ideal objectives for biochemical abnormalities in the CKD-MBD complex compared to the KDIGO suggestions (for example, in relation to parathyroid hormone or phosphate), the role of native vitamin D and analogues in the control of secondary hyperparathyroidism and the contribution of new phosphate binders and calcimimetics. Attention should also be drawn to the adoption of important new developments in the diagnosis of bone abnormalities in patients with kidney disease and to the need to be more proactive in treating them. In any event, the current speed at which innovations are taking place, while perhaps slower than we might like, globally drives the need for more frequent updates (for example, through Nefrología al día).

Abstract
The objective was to test the hypothesis of no difference in radiographic outcome after maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) with allogeneic adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) seeded on deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) (test) compared with excipient on DBBM (control). Eighteen minipigs were assigned into three groups of six animals and euthanised after one month (T1), two months (T2), and four months (T3), respectively. Each maxillary sinus was randomly allocated to either test or control with an equal volume of graft. Computed tomography scans (CTs) after MSFA (T0) were compared with CTs after euthanasia to evaluate graft volume (GV) changes and bone density (BD) using three-dimensional measurements and Hounsfield units. GV was larger in test compared with control at T1 (P = 0.046), whereas GV was larger in control compared with test at T3 (P = 0.01). BD increased from T0 to T1-T3 (P < 0.001) with both treatments. Higher BD was observed in control compared with test at T3 (P = 0.01), while no significant difference was observed at T1 and T2. Conclusively, the present study demonstrate that allogeneic ASCs seeded on DBBM in conjunction with MSFA seemed not to improve the radiographic outcome compared with excipient on DBBM. However, radiological outcomes need to be supplemented by bone histomorphometry before definitive conclusions can be provided about the beneficial use of allogeneic ASCs seeded on DBBM in conjunction with MSFA compared with DBBM alone.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Parathyroid hormone (PTH) plays an important role in maintaining mineral homeostasis by regulating calcium and phosphate levels. Clinical trials have shown that peptides of PTH (1-34), PTH-related protein (PTHrP 1-36), and the new peptide modeled on PTHrP, abaloparatide, can have different anabolic effects on osteoporotic subjects, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. The prevalence of moderate and major gingival recession has been shown to be higher in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. In addition, there is a significant association between osteoporosis and tooth loss. METHODS We investigated the actions of these peptides on the cementoblasts and teeth of mice. The murine cementoblast line, OCCM-30, known to express collagen I (Col1a1), was treated with intermittent PTH (1-34), PTHrP (1-36), or abaloparatide for 6 h/d for 3 days. Microcomputed tomography was performed on the teeth of mice receiving daily injections of phosphate-buffered saline, PTH (1-34), or abaloparatide. Statistical differences were analyzed by a 2-way or 1-way analysis of variance followed by a Tukey's post-hoc test. Results are expressed as mean ± standard deviation, and P <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Gene expression showed regulation of Bsp, Col1a1, Opg, Rankl, and Mmp13 by the 3 peptides in these cells. Western blots revealed that after intermittent treatment for 3 days, PTH (1-34) caused an increase in COL1A1 protein immediately after treatment. In contrast, abaloparatide showed a latent effect in increasing COL1A1 protein 18 hours after treatment. PTHrP had no effect on COL1A1 expression. Immunofluorescence confirmed the same result as the Western blots. Microcomputed tomography of teeth showed PTH (1-34) injections increased molar root mineral density in mice, whereas abaloparatide increased density in roots of incisors and molars. CONCLUSIONS This study reveals the differential anabolic effects of intermittent PTH (1-34), PTHrP (1-36), and abaloparatide on cementoblasts, as revealed by COL1A1 expression and root mineral density. Abaloparatide may be a potential therapeutic approach for achieving improved cementogenesis.

Abstract
Medical nutrition treatment can manage diabetes and slow or prevent its complications. The comparative effects of micronutrient supplements, however, have not yet been well established. We aimed at evaluating the comparative effects of vitamin and mineral supplements on managing glycemic control and lipid metabolism for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to inform clinical practice. Electronic and hand searches for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were performed until June 1, 2022. We selected RCTs enrolling patients with T2DM who were treated with vitamin supplements, mineral supplements, or placebo/no treatment. Data were pooled via frequentist random-effects network meta-analyses. A total of 170 eligible trials and 14223 participants were included. Low to very low certainty evidence established chromium supplements as the most effective in reducing fasting blood glucose levels and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (SUCRAs: 90.4% and 78.3%, respectively). Vitamin K supplements ranked best in reducing glycated hemoglobin A1c and fasting insulin levels (SUCRAs: 97.0% and 82.3%, respectively), with moderate to very low certainty evidence. Vanadium supplements ranked best in lowering total cholesterol levels with very low evidence certainty (SUCRAs:100%). Niacin supplements ranked best in triglyceride reductions and increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels with low to very low evidence certainty (SUCRAs:93.7% and 94.6%, respectively). Vitamin E supplements ranked best in reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels with very low evidence certainty (SUCRAs:80.0%). Our analyses indicated that micronutrient supplements, especially chromium, vitamin E, vitamin K, vanadium, and niacin supplements, may be more efficacious in managing T2DM than other micronutrients. Considering the clinical importance of these findings, new research is needed to get better insight into this issue.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate longitudinal outcomes of recombinant human fibroblast growth factor (rhFGF)-2 plus deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) therapy in comparison with rhFGF-2 alone for treating periodontal intrabony defects. This study describes 4-year follow-up outcomes of the original randomized controlled trial. Intrabony defects in periodontitis patients were treated with rhFGF-2 (control) or rhFGF-2 plus DBBM (test). Clinical, radiographic, and patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures were used to evaluate the outcomes. Thirty-two sites were able to be followed up. At 4 years postoperatively, clinical attachment level (CAL) gains in the test and control groups were 3.5 ± 1.4 mm and 2.7 ± 1.4 mm, respectively, showing significant improvement from preoperative values but no difference between groups. Both groups showed an increase in radiographic bone fill (RBF) over time. At 4 years, the mean value for RBF in the test group (62%) was significantly greater than that in the control group (42%). In 1-2-wall defects, the test treatment yielded significantly greater RBF than the control treatment. No significant difference in PRO scores was noted between the groups. Although no significant difference in CAL gain was found between the groups at the 4-year follow-up, the combination treatment significantly enhanced RBF. Favorable clinical, radiographic outcomes, and PRO in both groups can be maintained for at least 4 years.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the major causes of death globally. Currently, various methods are used to treat cancer, including radiotherapy, surgery, and chemotherapy, all of which have serious adverse effects. A healthy lifestyle, especially a nutritional diet, plays a critical role in the treatment and prevention of many disorders, including cancer. The above notion, plus the trend in going back to nature, encourages consumers and the food industry to invest more in food products and to find potential candidates that can maintain human health. One of these agents, and a very notable food agent, is royal jelly (RJ), known to be produced by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular salivary glands of young nurse honeybees. RJ contains bioactive substances, such as carbohydrates, protein, lipids, peptides, mineral salts and polyphenols which contribute to the appreciated biological and pharmacological activities. Antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antibacterial impacts are among the well-recognized benefits. The combination of RJ or its constituents with anticancer drugs has synergistic effects on cancer disorders, enhancing the drug’s effectiveness or reducing its side effects. The purpose of the present review is to emphasize the possible interactions between chemotherapy and RJ, or its components, in treating cancer illnesses.

Abstract
Simvastatin (SIM) is a lipid-lowering drug that also promotes bone formation, but its high liver specificity may cause muscle damage, and the low solubility of lipophilic drugs limits the systemic administration of SIM, especially in osteoporosis (OP) studies. In this study, we utilized the bone-targeting moiety of dendritic oligopeptides consisting of three aspartic acid moieties (dAsp3) and amphiphilic polymers (poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid); PEG-PLGA) to create dAsp3-PEG-PLGA (APP) nanoparticles (NPs), which can carry SIM to treat OP. An in vivo imaging system showed that gold nanocluster (GNC)-PLGA/APP NPs had a significantly higher accumulation rate in representative bone tissues. In vivo experiments comparing low-dose SIM treatment (0.25 mg/kg per time, 2 times per week) showed that bone-targeting SIM/APP NPs could increase the bone formation effect compared with non-bone-targeting SIM/PP NPs in a local bone loss of hindlimb suspension (disuse) model, but did not demonstrate good bone formation in a postmenopausal (ovariectomized) model of systemic bone loss. The APP NPs could effectively target high mineral levels in bone tissue and were expected to reduce side effects in other organs affected by SIM. However, in vivo OP model testing showed that the same lower dose could not be used to treat different types of OP.

Abstract
COVID-19 is a rapidly spreading disease, which has caught the world by surprise. Millions of people suffer from illness, and the mortality rates are dramatically high. Currently, there is no specific and immediate treatment for this disease. Remedies are limited to supportive regiments and few antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs. The lack of a definite cure for COVID-19 is the reason behind its high mortality and global prevalence. COVID-19 can lead to a critical illness with severe respiratory distress and cytokine release. Increased oxidative stress and excessive production of inflammatory cytokines are vital components of severe COVID-19. Micronutrients, metalloids, and vitamins such as iron, manganese, selenium, Zinc, Copper, vitamin A, B family, and C are among the essential and trace elements that play a pivotal role in human nutrition and health. They participate in metabolic processes that lead to energy production. In addition, they support immune functions and act as antioxidants. Therefore, maintaining an optimal level of micronutrients intake, particularly those with antioxidant activities, is essential to fight against oxidative stress, modulate inflammation, and boost the immune system. Therefore, these factors could play a crucial role in COVID-19 prevention and treatment. In this review, we aimed to summarize antiviral properties of different vitamins and minerals. Moreover, we will investigate the correlation between them and their effects in COVID-19 patients.

In addition, therapeutic advances include new anabolic agents, comparative studies of drug efficacy, and sequential and combined therapy. Therefore, therapeutic algorithms are also updated.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Cardiovascular disease and cancer are the 2 leading causes of death in the US, and vitamin and mineral supplementation has been proposed to help prevent these conditions. OBJECTIVE To review the benefits and harms of vitamin and mineral supplementation in healthy adults to prevent cardiovascular disease and cancer to inform the US Preventive Services Task Force. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, PubMed (publisher-supplied records only), Cochrane Library, and Embase (January 2013 to February 1, 2022); prior reviews. STUDY SELECTION English-language randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of vitamin or mineral use among adults without cardiovascular disease or cancer and with no known vitamin or mineral deficiencies; observational cohort studies examining serious harms. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Single extraction, verified by a second reviewer. Quantitative pooling methods appropriate for rare events were used for most analyses. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Mortality, cardiovascular disease events, cancer incidence, serious harms. RESULTS Eighty-four studies (N=739 803) were included. In pooled analyses, multivitamin use was significantly associated with a lower incidence of any cancer (odds ratio [OR], 0.93 [95% CI, 0.87-0.99]; 4 RCTs [n=48 859]; absolute risk difference [ARD] range among adequately powered trials, -0.2% to -1.2%) and lung cancer (OR, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.58-0.95]; 2 RCTs [n=36 052]; ARD, 0.2%). However, the evidence for multivitamins had important limitations. Beta carotene (with or without vitamin A) was significantly associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (OR, 1.20 [95% CI, 1.01-1.42]; 4 RCTs [n=94 830]; ARD range, -0.1% to 0.6%) and cardiovascular mortality (OR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.02-1.19]; 5 RCTs [n=94 506] ARD range, -0.8% to 0.8%). Vitamin D use was not significantly associated with all-cause mortality (OR, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.91-1.02]; 27 RCTs [n=117 082]), cardiovascular disease (eg, composite cardiovascular disease event outcome: OR, 1.00 [95% CI, 0.95-1.05]; 7 RCTs [n=74 925]), or cancer outcomes (eg, any cancer incidence: OR, 0.98 [95% CI, 0.92-1.03]; 19 RCTs [n=86 899]). Vitamin E was not significantly associated with all-cause mortality (OR, 1.02 [95% CI, 0.97-1.07]; 9 RCTs [n=107 772]), cardiovascular disease events (OR, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.90-1.04]; 4 RCTs [n=62 136]), or cancer incidence (OR, 1.02 [95% CI, 0.98-1.08]; 5 RCTs [n=76 777]). Evidence for benefit of other supplements was equivocal, minimal, or absent. Limited evidence suggested some supplements may be associated with higher risk of serious harms (hip fracture [vitamin A], hemorrhagic stroke [vitamin E], and kidney stones [vitamin C, calcium]). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Vitamin and mineral supplementation was associated with little or no benefit in preventing cancer, cardiovascular disease, and death, with the exception of a small benefit for cancer incidence with multivitamin use. Beta carotene was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer and other harmful outcomes in persons at high risk of lung cancer.

Abstract
Importance According to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, 52% of surveyed US adults reported using at least 1 dietary supplement in the prior 30 days and 31% reported using a multivitamin-mineral supplement. The most commonly cited reason for using supplements is for overall health and wellness and to fill nutrient gaps in the diet. Cardiovascular disease and cancer are the 2 leading causes of death and combined account for approximately half of all deaths in the US annually. Inflammation and oxidative stress have been shown to have a role in both cardiovascular disease and cancer, and dietary supplements may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects. Objective To update its 2014 recommendation, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) commissioned a review of the evidence on the efficacy of supplementation with single nutrients, functionally related nutrient pairs, or multivitamins for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mortality in the general adult population, as well as the harms of supplementation. Population Community-dwelling, nonpregnant adults. Evidence Assessment The USPSTF concludes with moderate certainty that the harms of beta carotene supplementation outweigh the benefits for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer. The USPSTF also concludes with moderate certainty that there is no net benefit of supplementation with vitamin E for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer. The USPSTF concludes that the evidence is insufficient to determine the balance of benefits and harms of supplementation with multivitamins for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer. Evidence is lacking and the balance of benefits and harms cannot be determined. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether micronutrients (vitamins/minerals) benefit attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and irritability in a North American pediatric sample. METHOD A 3-site, 8-week, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial of micronutrients was conducted in nonmedicated children aged 6 to 12 years with ADHD and at least 1 impairing irritability symptom by parent report on the Child and Adolescent Symptom Inventory-5 (CASI-5). A priori-defined primary outcomes were Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) (CGI-I of 1 or 2 = treatment responder) and parent-rated CASI-5 composite score of ADHD, oppositional defiant, disruptive mood dysregulation, and peer conflict symptoms, including impairment scores. RESULTS Of 135 randomized (mean age 9.8 years), 126 youths (93%) comprised the modified intention-to-treat population. Blinding was maintained. For the CGI-I, 54% of the micronutrient and 18% of the placebo group were responders (risk ratio = 2.97, 97.5% CI = 1.50, 5.90, p < .001). CASI-5 composite scores improved significantly for both groups (p < .01), with a mean change of -0.31 (95% CI = -0.39, -0.23) in the micronutrient group and a mean change of -0.28 (95% CI = -0.38, -0.19) in the placebo group. However, the between-group difference was not significant (mean change = -0.02; 97.5% CI = -0.16, 0.12, effect size = 0.07, p = .70). The micronutrient group grew 6 mm more than the placebo group (p = .002). No serious adverse events or clinically significant changes from baseline in blood and urine tests occurred. CONCLUSION Micronutrients showed global benefit over placebo by blinded clinician rating, but not by parent-report CASI-5 composite rating in a population with ADHD and irritability. Micronutrients showed greater height growth. Micronutrients were well tolerated, and the majority of participants adhered to the number of capsules prescribed. This randomized controlled trial replicates safety and efficacy reported for ADHD in 2 smaller trials of a similar formula containing all vitamins and known essential minerals in amounts between the Recommended Dietary Allowance and Upper Tolerable Intake Level. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endodontic microsurgery is a treatment of last resort for preserving natural teeth. According to radiographic evaluation, the percentage of complete healing after endodontic microsurgery is only 74.3%. The use of regenerative techniques in endodontic microsurgery for large lesions (>10 mm diameter) is therefore recommended. The most frequently used bone graft in endodontic microsurgery is anorganic bovine bone mineral (ABBM) but this only has an osteoconductive effect. Thus, when platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a reservoir of growth factors, is used together with ABBM, it increases the regenerative effect. This study is devoted to comparing the clinical outcomes of PRF with/without ABBM as grafting biomaterials in endodontic microsurgery cases with large lesion size to provide some valuable reference data for dentists. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Sixteen patients who are in need of endodontic microsurgery will be recruited. The patients will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: an experimental group, treated with PRF/ABBM complex and collagen membrane, and a control group, treated with ABBM and collagen membrane. Clinical examination including percussion, mobility testing and presence/absence of sinus will be recorded at 7 days, and at 3, 6 and 12 months after endodontic microsurgery. A Visual Analogue Scale will be used by the patients to evaluate pain at 1, 3 and 7 days after endodontic microsurgery. Routine paralleling radiographs will be obtained before and at 3, 6 and 12 months follow-up after endodontic microsurgery. Cone-beam CT (CBCT) scans will be obtained at the 12-month follow-up. Bone formation will be evaluated according to CBCT and paralleling radiographs. The study execute time including follow-ups last from 1 June 2021 to 31 December 2024. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study received approval from the Ethics Committee of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology. The results will be disseminated through scientific journals. Abstract
Applications of vibrational spectroscopy to assess bone disease and therapeutic interventions are continually advancing, with tissue mineral and protein composition frequently investigated. Here, we used two spectroscopic approaches for determining bone composition in a mouse model (oim) of the brittle bone disease osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) with and without antiresorptive agent treatment (alendronate, or ALN, and RANK-Fc). Near-infrared (NIR) spectral analysis using a fiber optic probe and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR) mode were applied to investigate bone composition, including water, mineral, and protein content. Spectral parameters revealed differences among the control wildtype (WT) and OIM groups. NIR spectral analysis of protein and water showed that OIM mouse humerii had ∼50% lower protein and ∼50% higher overall water content compared to WT bone. Moreover, some OIM-treated groups showed a reduction in bone water compared to OIM controls, approximating values observed in WT bone. Differences in bone quality based on increased mineral content and reduced carbonate content were also found between some groups of treated OIM and WT bone, but crystallinity did not differ among all groups. The spectroscopically determined parameters were evaluated for correlations with gold-standard mechanical testing values to gain insight into how composition influenced bone strength. As expected, bone mechanical strength parameters were consistently up to threefold greater in WT mice compared to OIM groups, except for stiffness in the ALN-treated OIM groups. Furthermore, bone stiffness, maximum load, and post-yield displacement showed the strongest correlations with NIR-determined protein content (positive correlations) and bound-water content (negative correlations). These results demonstrate that in this study, NIR spectral parameters were more sensitive to bone composition differences than ATR parameters, highlighting the potential of this nondestructive approach for screening of bone diseases and therapeutic efficacy in pre-clinical models.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The combination of traditional basic pharmacotherapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and physiotherapeutic methods can reduce the activity of the disease and accelerate the onset of remission, and therefore the development of new non-drug methods for the treatment of RA is relevant. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Study of the effect of natural mineral water « Tib-1» on the lipid peroxidation system in an experiment with a model adjuvant-induced RA in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS The object of the study were Wistar rats, divided into three groups: negative control (solvents), positive control (model of adjuvant-induced RA by subcutaneous injection of complete Freund's adjuvant) and experimental (correction of RA with mineral water « Tib-1», diluted in a ratio of 1:3 during the first 2 weeks from the moment the model was formed in the ad libitum mode). On the 3rd and 7th weeks in the blood of the animals were determined: the total number of leukocytes, the content of hydroperoxides according to Gavrilov, the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase activity. Pathological changes in the hip and knee joints were recorded using radiography. RESULTS The inflammatory process in the positive control group by the 3rd week was characterized by an increase in the number of leukocytes by 66% (p<0.01) and was accompanied by an increase in MDA by 60% (p<0.001). By the 7th week, despite a relative increase in catalase activity (16%), the MDA level continued to be elevated compared to the negative control by 67% (p<0.001). Against the background of exposure to mineral water, inflammation decreased (the number of leukocytes in the "model/experiment" groups turned out to be reduced by 41%; p<0.01) and an increase in compensatory-adaptive reactions in the form of catalase activation was noted (by 8%; p<0.01), which was accompanied by a persistent (weeks 3 and 7) decrease in MDA output (by 20%; p<0.01). Using the method of radiation diagnostics, positive changes in the articular apparatus of experimental animals were revealed, consisting in the relief of signs of subchondral sclerosis of the bone heads, which were noted for animals of the model group. CONCLUSION The use of natural mineral water «Tib-1» helps to reduce the acute inflammatory response during the formation of adjuvant-induced RA in Wistar rats, initiates the normalization of the balance of pro- and antioxidant processes in the body, and minimizes the intensity of degenerative-inflammatory joint lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of deproteinized bovine bone mineral with 10% collagen (DBBM-C) soaked with hyaluronic acid (HA) for ridge preservation in compromised extraction sockets. METHODS Bilateral third, fourth premolars and first molar were hemisected, distal roots were extracted, and then combined endodontic periodontal lesion was induced in the remaining mesial roots. After 4 months, the mesial roots were extracted and the following four treatments were randomly performed: Absorbable collagen sponge (ACS), ACS soaked with HA (ACS+HA), ridge preservation with DBBM-C covered with a collagen membrane (RP), ridge preservation with DBBM-C mixed with HA and covered with a collagen membrane (RP+HA). Animals were sacrificed at 1 and 3 months following treatment. Ridge dimensional changes and bone formation were examined using microcomputed tomography, histology, and histomorphometry. RESULTS At 1 month, ridge width was significantly higher in the RP and RP+HA groups than in the ACS and ACS+HA groups, while the highest proportion of mineralized bone was observed in ACS+HA group. At 3 months, ridge width remained significantly higher in the RP and RP+HA groups than in the ACS and ACS+HA groups. ACS+HA and RP+HA treatments featured the highest proportion of mineralized bone and bone volume density compared with the other groups. No statistical difference was observed between ACS+HA and RP+HA treatments. CONCLUSIONS Ridge preservation with the mixture DBBM-C/HA prevented dimensional shrinkage and improved bone formation in compromised extraction sockets at 1 and 3 months.

Abstract
This study evaluated the new bone formation potential of micro-macro biphasic calcium phosphate (MBCP) and Bio-Oss grafting materials with and without dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stem cells (DPSCs) and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in a rabbit calvarial bone defect model. The surface structure of the grafting materials was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The multipotent differentiation characteristics of the DPSCs and BMSCs were assessed. Four circular bone defects were created in the calvarium of 24 rabbits and randomly allocated to eight experimental groups: empty control, MBCP, MBCP+DPSCs, MBCP+BMSCs, Bio-Oss+DPSCs, Bio-Oss+BMSCs, and autogenous bone. A three-dimensional analysis of the new bone formation was performed using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and a histological study after 2, 4, and 8 weeks of healing. Homogenously porous structures were observed in both grafting materials. The BMSCs revealed higher osteogenic differentiation capacities, whereas the DPSCs exhibited higher colony-forming units. The micro-CT and histological analysis findings for the new bone formation were consistent. In general, the empty control showed the lowest bone regeneration capacity throughout the experimental period. By contrast, the percentage of new bone formation was the highest in the autogenous bone group after 2 (39.4% ± 4.7%) and 4 weeks (49.7% ± 1.5%) of healing (p < 0.05). MBCP and Bio-Oss could provide osteoconductive support and prevent the collapse of the defect space for new bone formation. In addition, more osteoblastic cells lining the surface of the newly formed bone and bone grafting materials were observed after incorporating the DPSCs and BMSCs. After 8 weeks of healing, the autogenous bone group (54.9% ± 6.1%) showed a higher percentage of new bone formation than the empty control (35.3% ± 0.5%), MBCP (38.3% ± 6.0%), MBCP+DPSC (39.8% ± 5.7%), Bio-Oss (41.3% ± 3.5%), and Bio-Oss+DPSC (42.1% ± 2.7%) groups. Nevertheless, the percentage of new bone formation did not significantly differ between the MBCP+BMSC (47.2% ± 8.3%) and Bio-Oss+BMSC (51.2% ± 9.9%) groups and the autogenous bone group. Our study results demonstrated that autogenous bone is the gold standard. Both the DPSCs and BMSCs enhanced the osteoconductive capacities of MBCP and Bio-Oss. In addition, the efficiency of the BMSCs combined with MBCP and Bio-Oss was comparable to that of the autogenous bone after 8 weeks of healing. These findings provide effective strategies for the improvement of biomaterials and MSC-based bone tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Introduction Several months ago, Chinese authorities identified an atypical pneumonia in Wuhan city, province of Hubei (China) caused by a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV or SARS-CoV-2). The WHO announced this new disease was to be known as "COVID-19". Evidence Acquisition Several approaches are currently underway for the treatment of this disease, but a specific cure remains to be established. Evidence Synthesis This review will describe how the use of selected nutraceuticals could be helpful, in addition to pharmacological therapy, in preventing some COVID-19-related complications in infected patients. Conclusions Even if a specific and effective cure for COVID-19 still has some way to go, selected nutraceuticals could be helpful, in addition to pharmacological therapy, in preventing some COVID-19-related complications in infected patients.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) protocol using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) covered with a collagen matrix (CM), as well as to clinically and histologically analyze the alveolar bone healing at 12 months, prior to implant placement. Six patients had bone biopsy samples harvested and underwent implant placement at 12 months following ARP. At 12 months, DBBM granules represented a mean 29.52% ± 6.09% of the specimens and were embedded in the newly formed bone, which represented a mean 27.72% ± 5.64% of the sample. Data suggest that 12 months of ARP using DBBM granules covered with a CM may be considered a predictable technique providing favorable conditions for implant placement in the anterior maxilla.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary factors have been noted to influence the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) which are the number one global cause of death. In this study, the nutritional importance and human health risk of the minerals composition of 20 medicinal plants' (MPs) parts used for treating CVDs and related risk factors in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) were assessed. METHODS Inductively coupled plasma technology was used for determining the minerals composition of the MPs while human health risk assessment was based on hazard quotients, hazard indexes and non-carcinogenic risk analysis of the studied heavy metals. RESULTS The investigation showed varied level of minerals in the studied MPs' parts with K having the highest concentration in most. Although level of some elements inM. lucida, V. amygdalina leaves, T. cacao seed and Z. officinale rhizome revealed their possibility in preventing the occurrence of atherosclerosis, unsafe levels of some trace elements were recorded in M. lucida and V. amygdalina leaves. V. amygdalina leaves and A. cepa bulb also had their Pb contents higher than the WHO/FAO Codex permitted maximum level for leafy and bulb vegetables, respectively. In spite of the desirable Na/K and Zn/Cu ratios in all the tested MPs with their Cd and Pb levels below the WHO recommended maximum levels for dried medicinal plant materials, health risk assessment showed that habitual use of almost all of the studied MPs would present an unacceptable risk of non-carcinogenic effects on health. With the exception of S. aromaticum flower bud and T. tetraptera fruit, principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses of other plants' parts (MPs' parts aside from the leaves) analysed provided a distinction between MPs which have found food applications and those solely used for medicinal purposes. CONCLUSIONS The study revealed that type of MP, plants' part, maturity stage, agricultural practice, growing environment and conditions, are among the factors determining the safety of plant materials used for CVDs' and related risk factors' treatment in SSA. To protect the lives of CVDs patients who rely on traditional medicine for treatment, government of SSA countries and relevant authorities need to set a regulatory limit for maximum acceptable concentration of minerals in MPs used in the region. Assessment of the physicochemical properties and pollution level of soil used for cultivation of these MPs is also encouraged.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the regenerative effect of adjunctive use of guided tissue regeneration (GTR), bovine porous bone mineral (BPBM), and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in intrabony defects. METHODS Fourteen participants were enrolled, and for each patient their left and right two sides were randomized to the test group or control group. Only the worst intrabony defect on each side was analyzed. The test group received GTR, BPBM, and PRF, whereas the control group received only GTR and BPBM. The PRF used in the trial was fluid PRF, which combined with the BPBM to form a BPBM-PRF complex. The patients were followed up by clinical and radiographic evaluation for 24 months after surgery. RESULTS Probing depth (PD) in the test group was significantly less than that in the control group at 12 and 24 months after surgery, and the mean difference was ≈ 0.5 to 0.7 mm. Clinical attachment level (CAL) gain in the test group was ≈ 0.9 mm higher than that in the control group at 6 months after surgery, and the difference reached 1.0 to 1.1 mm 12 and 24 months after surgery. None of the other clinical or radiographic parameters differed significantly between the two groups at any time-point after the surgery. CONCLUSION Compared with GTR and BPBM, the combination of GTR and BPBM-PRF complex is more effective clinically, and results in better clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Hypertension (HT) is one of the pivotal risk factors for various detrimental diseases like cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cerebrovascular disease, and renal dysfunction. Currently, many researchers are paying immense attention to various diet formula (dietary approach) with a special focus on micro and macronutrients along with modified lifestyle and standard anti-hypertensive drugs. Micronutrients (minerals/vitamins) play a central role in the regulation of blood pressure (BP) as they aid the function of macronutrients and also improve the anti-hypertensive functions of some anti-hypertensive agents. Even though several studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of micronutrients on controlling BP, still some ambiguity exists among the nutritionists/doctors, which combination or individual mineral (dietary approach) contributes to better BP regulation. Therefore, this critical review article was attempted to delineate the underlying role of micronutrients (minerals and vitamins) for the management and prevention or delaying of HT and their related complications with strong affirmation from clinical trials as well as its mechanism of controlling BP. Moreover, the major source and recommended daily allowance (RDA) of various micronutrients are included in this review for guiding common readers (especially HT subjects) and dieticians to choose/recommend a better micronutrient and their combinations (other nutrients and standard anti-hypertensive drugs) for lowering the risk of HT and its related co-morbid conditions like CVDs.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on randomized controlled trials (RCT) of multinutrients consisting of at least four vitamins and/or minerals as interventions for participants with psychiatric symptoms. A systematic search identified 16 RCTs that fit the inclusion criteria (n = 1719 participants) in six psychiatric categories: depression, post-disaster stress, antisocial behavior, behavioral deficits in dementia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and autism. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) was used to rate the evidence base. Significant clinical benefit was assessed using minimal clinically important differences (MIDs). Due to heterogeneity in participants, multinutrient formulas, outcome measures, and absence of complete data, only the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) category was eligible for meta-analyses. In ADHD populations, statistically and clinically significant improvements were found in global functioning, Mean Difference (MD) -3.3, p = 0.001, MID -3.26; Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) -0.49 p = 0.001 MD -0.5), clinician ratings of global improvement (MD -0.58, p = 0.001, MID -0.5) and ADHD improvement (MD -0.54, p = 0.002, MID -0.5), and clinician (but not observer) measures of ADHD inattentive symptoms (MD -1.53, p = 0.05, MID -0.5). Narrative synthesis also revealed a pattern of benefit for global measures of improvement, for example: in autism, and in participants with behavioral deficits in dementia. Post-natural disaster anxiety and the number of violent incidents in prison populations also improved. Broad-spectrum formulas (vitamins + minerals) demonstrated more robust effects than formulas with fewer ingredients. This review highlights the need for robust methodology-RCTs that report full data, including means and standard deviations for all outcomes-in order to further elucidate the effects of multinutrients for psychiatric symptoms.
