Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of two methods used to assess masticatory performance and attempt to correlate them to achieve interchangeability between the methods. METHODS Twelve healthy dentate volunteers (men = 6, women = 6; mean age = 28.3 ± 4.1) with no known dental or medical pathologies were requested to participate in this study. Each participant completed three masticatory performance assessments, including two two-colour mixing-ability tests using chewing-gums (CG: gum#1 and gum#2) and the gummy-jelly (GJ) test. For each method, participants created five samples each (total = 15 measurements per participant, gum#1 = 5, gum#2 = 5, GJ = 5). For the gum#1 and gum#2 methods, the predetermined chewing cycles were fixed at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 cycles, and for the GJ method, the time duration was fixed at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 s. The parameter measures were submitted to Z-score transformation, and Bland-Altman plots were generated to graphically compare the differences between two techniques against their means. Additionally, mountain plot was used to assess the cumulative distribution of measurement error between the methods. RESULTS A total of 180 measurements were recorded. There were significant correlations between the number of chewing cycles/chewing time and masticatory performance using the gum#1 (r = -.753; p < .001), gum#2 (r = -.838; p < .001) and GJ (r = .730). When all tests were considered together for each method, significant correlations were found (p < .001). A descriptive range of mean values aiming to produce reference value ranges for predictive purposes was achieved considering the interchangeably among the methods [CG = GJ (VoH-mg = dL): 10 cycle = 10 s: 0.329 = 110; 15 cycles = 15 s: 0.177 = 164; 20 cycles = 20 s: 0.130 = 205; 25 cycles = 25 s: 0.086 = 200; 30 cycles = 30 s: 0.077 = 267]. CONCLUSION The strong correlations and high consistency between the two masticatory performance methods found in this study conclude that the two assessment methods are reliable and interchangeable. Further evaluations are warranted to arrive at a conversion formula for translation of the results between the two methods.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the current status of chewing ability and analyze the risk factors among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, color-changeable gum and a color difference meter were used to assess chewing ability in the population. The statistical analysis employed multivariate logistic regression models to identify and quantify the factors influencing chewing ability. RESULTS A total of 373 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older in Chengdu, in the west of China, were included in this study; 64 individuals (17.2%) exhibited signs of poor chewing ability. Female (odds ratio [OR]: 0.124, 95% CI: 0.057-0.268, p < .001), education level with college degree and above (OR: 0.114, 95% CI: 0.030-0.434, p = .001), number of teeth less than 20 (OR: 5.401, 95% CI: 2.509-11.626, p < .001), and decreased oral diadochokinesis (OR: 4.445, 95% CI: 1.775-11.132, p = .001) were significant factors in chewing ability in this study, after adjustment for potential variables. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of decreased chewing ability among Chinese community-dwelling older adults was 17.2% and decreased chewing ability was associated with men, lower education level, less than 20 teeth and decreased oral diadochokinesis.

Abstract
Background/purpose Gum chewing has been found to improve oral function. Nevertheless, few randomized controlled trials have investigated the effects of gum-chewing exercises on oral function in older adults. This study aimed to examine the effect of gum-chewing exercises on oral function in older adults. Materials and methods This was a single-blind, randomized controlled trial, conducted from November 2021 to January 2022. A total of 130 participants were divided randomly into the intervention and control groups. The intervention group was told to chew experimental gums for one month, while the control group was instructed to chew experimental tablets for one month. Maximum bite force, occlusal contact areas, oral dryness, tongue pressure, tongue and lip functions (number of times each of the following syllables is pronounced per second:/pa/,/ta/, and/ka/), masticatory function, subjective masticatory function, and gum-chewing time were measured at baseline and one month following intervention to assess outcomes. Results One month following the intervention, tongue pressure was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (P = 0.027). In the within-group comparisons, maximum bite force (P < 0.001), unstimulated saliva flow (P < 0.001), tongue and lip functions (/pa/: P < 0.001;/ta/: P < 0.001;/ka/: P < 0.001), color scale value (P = 0.019), and ΔE value (P = 0.024) were significantly increased in the intervention group. Conclusion The results suggest that gum-chewing exercises can improve oral functions in older adults, although additional increases in masticatory load may be necessary to establish a more effective oral function training method using gum-chewing exercises in older adults.

Abstract
Background: Older adults who have undergone surgery for oral tumors are at increased risk of impaired masticatory rhythm. This study investigated the correlations between masticatory rhythm, objective masticatory performance, and subjective masticatory performance as well as factors related to masticatory rhythm. Methods: The participants were 44 adults (24 men, 20 women; age range 42~90 years old) who had undergone maxillectomy, mandibulectomy, or glossectomy and were rehabilitated with a maxillofacial prosthesis. The number of functional contact teeth pairs was confirmed by intraoral examination. Chewing rate, cycle duration, coefficient of variation (CV) for cycle duration (reflecting the stability of masticatory rhythm), and mixing ability were measured simultaneously using a mastication movement rhythm tracking device during gum chewing. Maximum occlusal force was measured using the dental prescale system. Patients' perception of chewing ability was rated using a questionnaire. Results: The Spearman's rank correlation test revealed that mixing ability, patient-rated masticatory scores, cycle duration, CV for cycle duration, and maximum occlusal force showed significant correlations with chewing rate. Multiple linear regression analysis identified mixing ability and the CV for cycle duration as significant predictors of masticatory rhythm. Conclusions: Factors associated with a faster chewing rate were higher mixing ability and masticatory scores, greater maximum occlusal force, shorter cycle duration, and smaller CV for cycle duration. Stable masticatory rhythm and mixing ability are significant predictors of chewing rate. Poor masticatory performance and unstable masticatory rhythm can result in slower chewing and thus a higher risk of inadequate dietary intake.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of denture adhesives on masticatory performance via a 10-center, parallel, randomized, controlled trial of complete denture wearers in Japan. METHODS The trial was conducted between September 2013 and October 2016. The inclusion criteria were complete edentulism, willingness to undergo new complete denture treatment, and willingness to return for recall treatment. The exclusion criteria were age 90 years or older, presence of severe systemic illness, inability to understand the questionnaires, wearing metal base complete dentures, denture adhesive user, wearing prosthetics for maxillofacial defects, wearing complete dentures with tissue conditioners, and severe xerostomia. Randomization of the powder-type denture adhesive (powder), cream-type denture adhesive (cream), and control (saline) groups was performed using a sealed envelope system. Masticatory performance was measured using color-changeable chewing gum. Intervention blinding was not feasible. RESULTS Sixty-seven control, 69 powder, and 64 cream participants are analyzed using the intention-to-treat principle. The participants in all groups show significantly improved masticatory performance at post-intervention (paired t-test with Bonferroni correction P < 0.0001). However, no significant difference in masticatory performance is detected among the three groups (one-way analysis of variance). A significant negative correlation between pre- and post-changes in masticatory performance and intraoral condition scores is observed (Pearson's correlation coefficient, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Although denture adhesives improved the masticatory performance of complete denture wearers, their clinical effects are comparable to those of saline solution. The use of denture adhesives is more effective in complete denture wearers with unsatisfactory intraoral conditions.

Abstract
The gum base mass is a colloidal system and the main component of chewing gum; which is an inert, non-nutritious, indigestible, and insoluble part of chewing gum, therefore this substance does not dissolve in the mouth when chewed. The gum base plays the most crucial role in determining the mechanical properties, flexibility, and overall quality of chewing gum. Moreover, it acts as a delivery system to transport sweeteners, flavorings, and other ingredients in chewing gum. Despite the massive market for chewing gum and the provision of a list of the main ingredients in gum base by the Code of Federal Regulations and some international organizations, there is a lack of information about chewing gum base and its compositions in the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to present an overview of the characteristics, ingredients and applications, production process, assessment, and modification methods of the gum base along with the advances and approaches in biodegradability. Biodegradability concerns play a promoting role in the research and development of chewing gum and its applications in the food industry, medical and dental sectors. Reviewing previous studies can surely help for faster development of this path.

Abstract
Abuse-deterrent formulations (ADFs) refer to formulation technologies aiming to deter the abuse of prescription drugs by making the dosage forms difficult to manipulate or extract the opioids. Assessments are required to evaluate the performance of the drugs through different routes including injection, ingestion, and insufflation and also when the drugs are manipulated. Chewing is the easiest and most convenient way to manipulate the drugs and deserves investigation. Chewing is one of the most complex bioprocesses, where the ingested materials are subject to periodic tooth crushing, mixed through the tongue, and lubricated and softened by the saliva. Inter- and intra-subject variations in chewing patterns may result in different chewing performances. The purpose of this study is to use a chewing simulator to assess the deterrent properties of tablets made of polyethylene oxide (PEO). The simulator can mimic human molar grinding with variable chewing parameters including molar trajectory, chewing frequency, and saliva flow rate. To investigate the effects of these parameters, the sizes of the chewed tablet particles and the chewing force were measured to evaluate the chewing performance. Thirty-four out of forty tablets were broken into pieces. The results suggested that the simulator can chew the tablets into smaller particles and that the molar trajectory and saliva flow rate had significant effect on reducing the size of the particles by analysis of variance (ANOVA) while the effect of chewing frequency was not clear. Additionally, chewing force can work as an indicator of the chewing performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of masticatory performance (MP) is conducted in hospitals, but is difficult to perform in nursing facilities that lack specialists in dysphagia. To select the appropriate food textures in nursing practice, a simple method of evaluating the MP should be developed. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate motion parameters that influence MP by motion capture analysis of maxillofacial movement on chewing gummy jelly in healthy adults. METHODS The subjects were 50 healthy adults. The state of chewing gummy jelly was photographed using a high-speed camera. Simultaneously, we evaluated the amount of glucose extracted (AGE) obtained with gummy jelly as a reference value for MP. The subjects were divided into two groups: normal and low masticatory groups (NG and LG, respectively) based on the AGE. The cycle of mastication was classified into three phases: closing phase (CP), transition phase (TP) and opening phase (OP) through motion capture analysis of the video photographed. Parameters of jaw movement and their associations with the AGE were examined. RESULTS The transition phase rate (TR) and opening phase rate (OR) were correlated with the AGE. Furthermore, the TR in the NG was significantly higher than in the LG, whereas the OR was significantly lower than in the LG. The age, TR and opening velocity were significant independent variables. CONCLUSION Motion capture technology facilitated the analysis of jaw movement. The results suggested that MP can be evaluated by analysing the TP and OP rates.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The simplified technique has been recommended for the fabrication of removable complete dentures. However, a consensus regarding the performance of the simplified and the traditional techniques is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to compare the performance of prostheses fabricated with the simplified and the traditional techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty participants were recruited and randomized into 2 groups: traditional technique (control group) and simplified technique (experimental group). The assessments were performed before treatment (baseline) and 2 and 4 months after adaptation to the new complete dentures. The variables evaluated were satisfaction, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) by using the Brazilian version of the OHIP-EDENT, the quality of the prostheses, and, for the functional assessment, the masticatory performance and swallowing threshold. The data were analyzed by the Fisher exact test, the Mann-Whitney test, and the generalized equations estimating (GEE) method. RESULTS At baseline, the mean ±standard deviation quality of the prostheses was 5.3 ±2.3 for the traditional technique and 4.9 ±2.3 for the simplified technique, and at 4 months, it was 9.3 ±0.9 and 9.1 ±0.9, respectively. For masticatory performance, the mean ±standard deviation X50 at baseline was 5.7 ±1.4 for the traditional technique and 5.7 ±0.9 for the simplified technique, and at 4 months, it was 3.8 ±1.2 and 3.7 ±0.9, respectively. The mean ±standard deviation OHRQoL at baseline was 14.1 ±8.6 for the traditional technique and 12.5 ±9.4 for the simplified technique, and at 4 months, it was 3.2 ±4.3 and 2.6 ±5.1, respectively. The mean ±standard deviation satisfaction at baseline was 9.5 ±3.9 for the traditional technique and 9.3 ±4.2 for the simplified technique; after 4 months, it was 14.8 ±2.0 for both techniques. There was a significant improvement (P<.05) for all variables in the study when comparing them at the baseline to those at the evaluation after provision of new complete dentures. There was no significant difference in all analyzed variables (P>.05) between the 2 techniques for prosthesis fabrication. CONCLUSIONS The simplified technique appears to be a suitable alternative to the traditional technique for the fabrication of complete dentures, with similar performance.

Abstract
PURPOSE Maintaining good masticatory function from a young age promotes lifelong health, yet limited studies have explored masticatory performance in young individuals. We investigated the relationship of sex, age, and individual oral functions with masticatory performance among junior and senior high school students and young adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study included students aged 12-13, 14-15, and 16-17 years (groups S1, S2, and S3, respectively) and young adults aged 20-40 years (group YA). We assessed oral functions, the number of functional teeth, and anthropometric measurements. Masticatory performance was evaluated using color-changeable chewing gum. We analyzed sex-related differences in each group and age-related differences in each sex. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed using masticatory performance as the dependent variable to investigate related factors. RESULTS Among the 522 children and 100 young adults, males exhibited significantly higher masticatory performance than females in groups S1, S3, and YA. Among males, groups S2, S3, and YA exhibited significantly higher masticatory performance than group S1. Among females, group S2 exhibited higher masticatory performance than groups S1 and S3. Male sex, the maximum occlusal force and tongue pressure, and the number of functional teeth were significantly correlated with masticatory performance. CONCLUSIONS Masticatory function development differed by sex, with males exhibiting higher masticatory performance than females. We identified that male sex, the maximum occlusal force and tongue pressure, and the number of functional teeth were significantly associated with masticatory performance. Our findings provide a basis for masticatory performance assessment in different age groups.

Abstract
Many older people have restricted activities or movements because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which causes concerns about secondary health problems. This study aimed to investigate how frailty-prevention activities implemented by local governments have changed the health of community-dwelling older people during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this observational study, the participants were 23 older Japanese people who took part in keyboard harmonica or exercise classes in 2021. Oral function examination and physical function tests were conducted at baseline and after 10 months of follow-up. In each class, the participants met 15 times and worked on assignments at home. The results showed that oral diadochokinesis/pa/, which represents lip dexterity, improved during 10 months (from 6.6 to 6.8 times/s, p < 0.046); however, grip strength (p < 0.005) and total skeletal muscle mass (p < 0.017) decreased in the keyboard harmonica group. In the exercise group, a statistically significant difference was found only in grip strength, which decreased (p < 0.003). The oral and physical functions of older people who participated in frailty-prevention activities implemented by local governments characteristically changed. Moreover, activity restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused decreased grip strength.

Abstract
The complexity of mandibular dynamics encourages constant research as a vehicle to improve oral health. The gold standard motion capture system might help us to understand its functioning and its relation to body position, aiming to perform an exhaustive bibliographic review in the Dentistry field. Six different electronic databases were used (Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus) in April 2022. The selection criteria includes a biography, critical analysis, and the full text from 1984 to April 2022, based on the odontological gold standard, whether or not in combination with additional devices. Clinical cases, bibliographic reviews or meta-analysis and grey literature were excluded. The checklist of the critical assessment methodology by Joanna Brigs was used (JBI). After choosing scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 23 out of 186 investigations were classified as eligible with a total of 384 participants. The issue being addressed is related to the speech properties, posture and body movement in relation to dento-oro-facial muscle and facial analysis, mandibular kinematics and mandibular dynamics during the mastication process. The markers arrangement depends on the dynamic to be analysed. From a physiologic and pathologic perspective, the applications of the optic system are relevant in Dentistry. The scarcity of literature obtained implies the need for future research.

Further Validity and Reliability of Turkish Version of the Mandibular Functional Impairment Questionnaire in Patients with Temporomandibular Dysfunction. Abstract
Purpose:
The aim of this study is to develop a new Turkish version of MFIQ (MFIQ-T-N) by adding the cut off value and improving the validation to the Turkish version of the Mandibular Functional Impairment Questionnaire (MFIQ-T) in patinets with Temporomandibular dysfunction.
Methods: The psychometric properties of the MFIQ were examined in 242 participants diagnosed with TMD and 81 healthy participants. The internal construct validity was assessed with both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. External construct validity of the MFIQ-Tr-N was established by The Fonseca Anamnestic index (FAI), The Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), and The patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Predictive validity was examined using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) to validate the cut-off value of the MFIQ-T-N for diagnosis of TMD. For the determination of reliability internal consistency, test-retest reliability and smallest real difference (SRD95) were investigated.
Results: Factor analysis indicated that the MFIQ-T-N had three factors as masticatory, non-masticatory 1, and 2. The MFIQ-T-N was moderately correlated with the FAI (Spearman’s rho = 0.553, p < .001) and OHIP-14 (rho = 0.534, p < .001). The cut-off point for MFIQ-T-N was set at >5 with 84% sensitivity and 87% specificity. The ICC and Cronbach’s α values were found as 0.913 and 0. 916, respectively. The SRD95 for Test-retest reliability was 7.004.
Conclusions: The MFIQ-T-N had sufficient psychometric features and was appropriate to use for participants with TMD. In addition, this new version provides researchers with greater opportunities to evaluate mandibular functions in the TMD patient group.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of oral factors on adherence to the Mediterranean diet in an older population METHODS: 130 persons over 60 years visiting Open Care Community Centers for Older People participated in this study. Oral interviews recorded demographic and sociomedical information, subjective oral complaints, and dental habits. Adherence to Mediterranean diet was assessed using the MDI_BNC4H index (range: 0-14). An oral examination was performed, and evaluation of the masticatory performance was carried out using a two-color chewing gum that was digitally analysed. RESULTS The mean age of the study participants was 73.9 ± 8.5 years. The score of adherence to the Mediterranean diet ranged from 3 to 9 (5.6 ± 1.4). 58 participants used removable prostheses, while 20 used a pair of complete dentures. Univariate analyses revealed that the parameters that negatively significantly, or marginally significantly, affected the level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet were lower masticatory performance (p = 0.050), larger number of drugs per day (p = 0.056), higher BMI (p = 0.043) and smoking (p = 0.053). The multivariable analysis revealed that lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with higher BMI (p = 0.047) and lower masticatory performance (p = 0.050). CONCLUSIONS Increased masticatory performance was an independent predictor of better adherence to the Mediterranean diet in an older population.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of a new test food for the clinical assessment of masticatory performance. The test food had two overlapping acidic/basic halves. Ten dentate subjects chewed one unit for 10-100 cycles. One subject chewed ten units for the same number of cycles. Differences in the L*, a* and b* colour axes were determined before and after chewing by ANOVA. Colour guides were created based on the values of these axes and matched with the number of cycles. The reliability of the guides was evaluated using 30 images, where three examiners indicated the number of cycles in which the colour closest to that of a chewed material was found. The data were contrasted with the real values of the guides to determine the validity (Kappa coefficients). The equivalence of the guides with the median particle size (X50) was determined using equidimensional curves. The test food progressively changed from green to pink during chewing. As the number of cycles increased, the a* values increased and the b* values decreased (p < 0.05). Overall, the guides showed a Kappa value >0.8 for the intra-examiner and inter-examiner reliability and the validity comparisons. The a* and X50 values were inversely proportional to each other, and the b* values showed a direct relationship with the X50 values. The L* values did not show correspondence. The new test food showed high reliability and validity for the assessment of masticatory performance through clinical colour guides matched with the number of cycles and X50.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between oral and cognitive functions among older people is highly debated. OBJECTIVE To examine whether oral functions are related to changes in the levels of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) biomarkers in older Japanese outpatients. METHODS This observational study included 52 outpatients aged ≥65 years who underwent dental examinations at the Fukuoka Dental College Hospital. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was performed, and MCI blood biomarker levels were assessed at baseline and after 2 years. The present dental and periodontal conditions and the oral functions (tongue pressure and masticatory performance) were evaluated. Changes in parameters from baseline to follow-up were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, McNemar test or chi-squared test. Associations among changes in the parameters were analysed using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. RESULTS The follow-up rate in this study was 67%. The masticatory performance was improved (p < 0.001), whereas gingival inflammation was decreased (p < 0.001) over the 2-year period. A significant increase in the MMSE score (p < 0.001) and a decrease in MCI risk (p < 0.001) were noted. The decrease in MCI risk was correlated with the increase in both masticatory performance (ρ = -0.34; p < 0.05) and MMSE score (ρ = -0.56; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION A decrease in MCI risk, as demonstrated by the levels of the blood biomarkers, was correlated with an increase in the masticatory performance in Japanese outpatients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The existing masticatory performance (MP) tests cannot comprehensively evaluate objective masticatory function. OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine the construct validity and responsiveness and determine the clinically minimum important difference (MID) and related factors of a newly developed MP scale to integrate food biting, comminution and mixing ability in patients with removable partial dentures (RPDs). METHODS Masticatory performance tests using gummy jelly, peanuts and colour-changeable gum were performed before and 3 months after RPD treatment in 248 partially dentate patients. A 10-point ordinal subscale was created for each MP test based on the distributions of MP values, and the three subscales were integrated into a single scale (iMP scale). We analysed the correlations between MP values and iMP scores and determined the effect size for RPD treatments and the MID on the basis of patient perception of chewing ability. RESULTS iMP scores exhibited moderate correlations with the three MP values (|ρ| = 0.73-0.79, p < .001) and with the change scores (|ρ| =0.61-0.64, p < .001). The mean iMP score significantly increased after RPD treatment (p < .001), and the effect size was 0.35. Of the 248 patients, 55 (22%) reported a slight improvement in chewing ability with a mean iMP score change of 2.1 points. Sex and the number of missing teeth were significantly associated with iMP scores (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS The iMP scale comprehensively evaluated objective masticatory function, including food biting, comminution and mixing ability in RPD wearers, and an increase of two points on the iMP scale was considered to be the MID in RPD treatments.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to examine the responsiveness of chewing tests after removable partial denture (RPD) treatment in this prospective cohort study. METHODS Pre- and post-RPD treatment, objective masticatory function was evaluated in 248 patients via chewing tests involving peanuts, a gummy jelly, and a color-changeable gum. A statistical comparison was performed between the pre- and post-treatment scores, and the standardized response mean (SRM) was determined as the treatment effect size (ES). RESULTS After RPD treatment, the median particle size in the sieving method using peanuts significantly decreased, and the glucose concentration in the gummy jelly method significantly increased (P < 0.001). The ESs of the sieving and gummy jelly methods were larger (|SRM| = 0.3-0.4) than that of the gum method (|SRM| = 0.1). In the subgroup analysis, the sieving and gummy jelly methods resulted in a broader effective range (|SRM| ≥ 0.3) than the gum method. In patients without pre-treatment dentures, the ES was medium in the sieving method (|SRM| = 0.6) and weak in the gummy jelly and gum methods (|SRM| = 0.3-0.4). The pre-treatment level of masticatory function was significantly correlated with ES (ρ = 0.93, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the sieving and gummy jelly methods are more responsive than the gum method for RPD treatment and that the pre-treatment scores affect the responsiveness.

Abstract
The major causes of oral candidiasis include decreased salivary flow rate and the use of ill-fitting dentures. However, the relationships among prosthetic treatment, saliva, and Candida albicans have not been elucidated. This study aimed to examine the effects of prosthetic treatment and changes in saliva (mainly the salivary flow rate) on oral candidiasis symptoms. Participants requiring prosthetic treatment underwent testing for C. albicans, salivary flow rate, intraoral symptoms, and bite force at the initial visit and four months after treatment to evaluate pretreatment and post-treatment changes. The relationships among C. albicans, salivary flow rate, dentures, and intraoral symptoms were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Denture treatment improved activity against C. albicans as well as the salivary flow rate, intraoral symptoms, and masticatory function. Multiple regression analysis revealed that changes in the stimulated salivary flow rate due to prosthetic treatment significantly improved C. albicans detection (p = 0.011), intraoral symptoms (p = 0.037), and bite force (p = 0.031). This study showed that prosthetic treatment improved salivary flow and intraoral symptoms and confirmed the influence of stimulated salivary flow rate changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Recent shifts in the distribution of Japan's population towards older ages, have meant that the chance of encountering patients with dementia in dental clinics is increasing. Many studies have shown that the brain volume decreases along with the progression of dementia. Although previous studies have reported a relationship between tooth loss or periodontitis and the onset of dementia, the pathological mechanisms underlying this association have not been elucidated. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between the oral condition and brain atrophy and to discuss how to adequately deal with patients with dementia. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 15 participants who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The participants were 60 years or older and presented with cognitive decline, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), diagnosed by a neurologist. We obtained information on the oral condition, lifestyle, cognitive function, and brain atrophy. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). MR images of each patient were analyzed using the voxel-based specific regional analysis system for Alzheimer's disease (VSRAD) to provide a quantitative measure of the degree of brain atrophy. RESULTS The study population included 4 male and 11 female patients. The mean age and mean number of present teeth were 75.9 years (SD 6.7) and 15.0 (SD 11.1), respectively. The median MMSE score was 25.6 (SD 3.7). The degree of atrophy of the whole brain was significantly correlated with the number of present teeth (ρ = -0.72, p < 0.05) and the presence of a daily exercise habit (ρ = -0.66, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that the number of present teeth could be an indicator of the progress of dementia. Preserving the teeth as well as the acquisition of a regular exercise habit might be important for preventing progression of dementia. Further research examining a larger study population and analyzing a greater number of factors is warranted.

Abstract
To mitigate the impact of dementia, initiating early intervention is important. This study aims to investigate the associations between deterioration in oral function and cognitive decline in older outpatients whose oral health was maintained in the dental clinic. This study included 50 outpatients aged ≥65 years. We used the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-J) to assess cognitive decline. Oral function was evaluated by tongue pressure, masticatory performance, and swallowing ability. A full-mouth periodontal examination was conducted, and the occlusal support and number of teeth were recorded. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cognitive decline (MoCA-J score ≤ 25 points) were calculated using logistic regression models. The age, number of teeth, tongue pressure, and masticatory performance were significantly correlated with cognitive decline (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analyses revealed that cognitive decline was independently associated with age (OR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.03-1.52; p = 0.024), number of teeth (OR = 0.83; 95% CI: 0.76-1.00; p = 0.047), and lower tongue pressure (OR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.77-0.98; p = 0.022). Lower tongue pressure and a small number of remaining teeth may be associated with cognitive decline in Japanese outpatients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association of the combination of poor appetite (PA) and low masticatory function (LMF) with sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS In total, 173 community-dwelling Japanese adults aged ≥ 75 years participated in the 3-year cohort study. Appetite assessment using the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ) and masticatory function assessment using spectrophotometric measurement of differences in gum colour before and after masticating colour-changeable chewing gum (ΔE*ab) were performed at baseline. SNAQ score of ≤ 14 was defined as PA. The lowest tertile of ΔE*ab was defined as LMF. Follow-up examinations were administered annually over a 3-year period to determine sarcopenia incidence, which was defined by the criteria proposed by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of sarcopenia incidence according to the presence of PA and LMF were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS At baseline, 81 participants (46.8%) had neither PA nor LMF, 34 (19.7%) had PA alone, 35 (20.2%) had LMF alone, and 23 (13.3%) had both PA and LMF. On follow-up, 31 participants (17.9%) developed sarcopenia. After adjusting for covariates, the adjusted HR for sarcopenia in participants with both PA and LMF was 4.4 (95% confidence interval = 1.6-12.2) compared with those without PA or LMF. PA or LMF alone was not significantly associated with sarcopenia development. CONCLUSIONS Coexisting PA and LMF increase the risk of sarcopenia development among community-dwelling Japanese adults aged ≥ 75 years.

Abstract
A test using a solid food is relevant to measure chewing ability (CA) as (a) it includes an integrated functioning of all oral structures involved, (b) an impairment of chewing a solid food causes inevitably diet restrictions, and (c) chewing efficiency (CE) can easily be defined. CE is the number of chewing cycles, N(1/2-Xo), needed to attain a particular chewing outcome (a median particle size, X 50 , which is half the initial particle size Xo) whereas chewing performance (CP) is a state of chewing outcome (X 50 ) at an arbitrary number of chewing cycles. The use of CE is preferable for CA because inter-subject ratios are constant regardless of the initial conditions of the test food. Furthermore, the inter-subject variation is two times larger for CE values than for CP ones, yielding a better inter-subject differentiation of CA. However, a determination of CP needs only one N-value, and that of CE at least two N-values for enabling an interpolation of N(1/2-Xo). Using samples of only two half-cubes (9.6 x 9.6 x 4.8 mm; limiting test load) of Optosil (an artificial test food), and detailed previous information on log(X 50 )-log(N) relationships (Liu et al., Archives of Oral Biology, 2018, 91, 63-77) as a "gold standard," a short procedure has been developed for a priori choosing two appropriate N-numbers, and the subsequent determination of a subject's CE. This procedure has been developed using results from 20 young adults (23.7 years, SD 1.1) and was validated in 10 middle-aged and older adults (52.3 years, SD 10.1), where impairments in the dentition were reflected in the CE-values. Our short procedure to determine CE will improve studies on relationships between CA and food preference, or between CA and dental factors and/or physiological factors. The first type of relationship may be of interest for food industry whereas the second type may be of interest for population studies in rapidly aging societies and for clinical studies in dentistry. Results can be compared between subjects and studies without bias by using CE rather than CP as a measure of CA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Masticatory performance of elderly complete denture wearers is low, which may lead to restriction on intakes of several foods such as fresh fruit or raw vegetables. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between tongue motor function, lip motor function, and mixing ability in complete denture wearers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants comprised 54 complete denture wearers with a mean age of 77.1 years. Maximum tongue pressure and oral diadochokinesis were measured to evaluate tongue and lip motor functions. A color-changeable, chewing gum was used to evaluate mixing ability. The relationship between tongue and lip motor functions and mixing ability was assessed using stepwise multiple regression analysis. RESULTS The stepwise multiple regression analysis identified maximum tongue pressure, the number of repetitions of the syllable "ka", and gender as significant predictors for mixing ability among complete denture wearers. DISCUSSION The elderly edentulous individuals mainly used tongue motor function in oral motor functions for mixing color-changeable chewing gums, which might be ascribable to wearing complete dentures. CONCLUSIONS Under the limited conditions of this study, factors relating to tongue motor function, tongue pressure and the number of repetitions of the syllable "/ka"/ significantly contributed to the mixing ability of complete denture wearers. It was suggested that tongue motor function had positive effect on the mixing ability of complete denture wearers.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the general, geometric, and kinematic characteristics of the masticatory cycle's movements in a tridimensional way, using a method developed by our study group to provide a new insight into the analysis of mandibular movements due to advancement in the potential of computational analysis. Ten individuals (20.1 ± 2.69 years), molar class I, without mandibular movement problems participated in this study. The movements of the masticatory cycles, frontal and sagittal mandibular border movements, were recorded using 3D electromagnetic articulography and processed with computational scripts developed by our research group. The number of chewing cycles, frequency (cycles/s), chewing cycle areas/mandibular border movements areas ratios, and the mouth opening and closing speeds on the 3D trajectory of the chewing cycle were compared. The cycles were divided and analyzed in thirds. The masticatory cycles showed high variation among the individuals (21.6 ± 9.4 cycles); the frequency (1.46 ± 0.21 cycles/s) revealed a moderate positive correlation (R = 0.52) with the number of cycles. The frontal area ratios between the cycle area and the mandibular border movement presented higher values in the first third (6.65%) of the masticatory cycles, and the ratios of sagittal areas were higher and more variable (first, 7.67%; second, 8.06%; and third, 10.04%) than the frontal view. The opening and closing mouth speeds were greater in the second third of the masticatory cycles (OS, 57.82 mm/s; CS, 58.34 mm/s) without a significant difference between the opening and closing movements when the same thirds were evaluated. Further studies are necessary to improve the understanding of the masticatory cycles regarding the standardization of parameters and their values.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mandibular overdentures retained by a single implant placed in the midline of edentulous mandible have been reported to be more comfortable and function better than complete dentures. Although single-implant overdentures are still more costly than conventional complete dentures, there are a few studies which investigated whether mandibular single-implant overdentures are superior to complete dentures when patient general satisfaction is compared. The aim of this study is to assess patient general satisfaction with mandibular single-implant overdentures and complete dentures. METHODS This study is a randomized crossover trial to compare mandibular single-implant overdentures and complete dentures in edentulous individuals. Participant recruitment is ongoing at the time of this submission. Twenty-two participants will be recruited. New mandibular complete dentures will be fabricated. A single implant will be placed in the midline of the edentulous mandible. The mucosal surface of the complete denture around the implant will be relieved for 3 months. The participants will then be randomly allocated into 2 groups according to the order of the interventions; group 1 will receive single-implant overdentures first and will wear them for 2 months, followed by complete dentures for 2 months. Group 2 will receive the same treatments in a reverse order. After experiencing the 2 interventions, the participants will choose one of the mandibular prostheses, and yearly follow-up visits are planned for 5 years. The primary outcome of this trial is patient ratings of general satisfaction on 100 mm visual analog scales. Assessments of the prostheses and oral health-related quality of life will also be recorded as patient-reported outcomes. The secondary outcomes are cost and time for treatment. Masticatory efficiency and cognitive capacity will also be recorded. Furthermore, qualitative research will be performed to investigate the factors associated with success of these mandibular denture types. Clinical outcomes, such as implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, and prosthodontic complications, will also be recorded. DISCUSSION The results of this randomized crossover trial will clarify whether mandibular single implants and overdentures for edentulous individuals provide better patient general satisfaction when compared to conventional complete dentures. TRIAL REGISTRATION This clinical trial was registered at the University Hospital Medical Information Network (UMIN) Center (UMIN000017883).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Following chewing a solid food, the median particle size, X50, is determined after N chewing cycles, by curve-fitting of the particle size distribution. Reduction of X50 with N is traditionally followed from N ≥ 15-20 cycles when using the artificial test food Optosil®, because of initially unreliable values of X50. The aims of the study were (i) to enable testing at small N-values by using initial particles of appropriate size, shape and amount, and (ii) to compare measures of chewing ability, i.e. chewing efficiency (N needed to halve the initial particle size, N(1/2-Xo)) and chewing performance (X50 at a particular N-value, X50,N). DESIGN 8 subjects with a natural dentition chewed 4 types of samples of Optosil particles: (1) 8 cubes of 8 mm, border size relative to bin size (traditional test), (2) 9 half-cubes of 9.6 mm, mid-size; similar sample volume, (3) 4 half-cubes of 9.6 mm, and 2 half-cubes of 9.6 mm; reduced particle number and sample volume. All samples were tested with 4 N-values. Curve-fitting with a 2nd order polynomial function yielded log(X50)-log(N) relationships, after which N(1/2-Xo) and X50,N were obtained. CONCLUSIONS Reliable X50-values are obtained for all N-values when using half-cubes with a mid-size relative to bin sizes. By using 2 or 4 half-cubes, determination of N(1/2-Xo) or X50,N needs less chewing cycles than traditionally. Chewing efficiency is preferable over chewing performance because of a comparison of inter-subject chewing ability at the same stage of food comminution and constant intra-subject and inter-subject ratios between and within samples respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the masticatory function (MF) and subjective perception of patients with poor denture-bearing tissue in relation to change and the time required to identify an improvement in these parameters after rehabilitation with mandibular overdentures (MO) by two narrow-diameter two-piece implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-three edentulous patients were selected for MO installation. The masticatory function (MF) was evaluated with the masticatory performance (MP) and swallowing threshold (ST) tests. In the MP test, each volunteer was instructed to masticate a portion of Optocal (standardized artificial test food) for 40 masticatory cycles. During the swallowing threshold test, the patients were instructed to chew a new portion of Optocal cubes until they felt the desire to swallow. The MF tests were performed while complete denture (CD) wearers (baseline) and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after MO loading. In addition, the subjective perception was assessed through the questionnaires Dental Impact on Daily Living (DIDL), Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), and Oral Health Impact Profile in Edentulous (OHIP- EDENT) at the baseline and 3, 6, and 12 months after MO loading. RESULTS A significant improvement in masticatory function (p < .05) was observed already in the first month of loading. Three months after MO loading, a significant improvement (p < .05) was found in the subjective perception of patients. The effect size indicates that the MO had the greatest impact on the domains related to function and comfort of all questionnaires and in relation to psychosocial domain of the GOHAI. The level of patient satisfaction increased significantly after the MO loading and reached >90% satisfied patients at 12 months. CONCLUSION The MO improved both the MF of the patient and their oral health-related quality of life and satisfaction regarding the prosthesis in a short time period.

Abstract
The evaluation of mastication is important to understand the masticatory behavior and diagnose feeding difficulties. The objective of this preliminary study was to verify if there is agreement between objective and subjective validated methods of chewing evaluation in a convenience sample which consisted of 32 adolescents (mean 15.5years), complete permanent dentition and free of tooth decay. The Quality of Masticatory Function Questionnaire with the Food-Mastication, Habits, Meat, Fruit and Vegetables domains was used in the subjective evaluation. The objective aspects consisted of maximum bite force (BF) and masticatory performance (MP) by mastication of cubes of test-material and sieving to determine the median particle size (X50) and distribution in the sieves ("b"), and by the colorimetric method using colorchangeable chewing gum. Data were submitted to exploratory analysis, normality test and correlation tests (Pearson/Spearman). The correlation between BF and X50 (r=-0.43; p=0.02) and between BF and MP chewing gum (r=0.53; p=0.002) was significant with large effect size. The MP evaluated by chewing gum correlated with X50 (r=-0.34; p=0.055), but not with "b" (r=-0.06; p=0.73), while "b" correlated only with X50 (r=0.52, p=0.002). No significant correlation was observed between the objective measures and the total score of the subjective evaluation; only a negative correlation was observed between "b" and Meat domain (r=-0.40; p=0.023). The objective methods showed moderate correlation with each other and no agreement between the objective and subjective methods was observed in this sample of healthy adolescents, emphasizing the importance of both aspects in the evaluation of masticatory function.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mastication is one of the essential stomatognathic functions and is impaired when mandibulectomy is performed for removal of head and neck lesions. AIM The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between perceived chewing ability {Masticatory Score (MS)} and objective mixing ability (∆E) in patients who had undergone marginal mandibulectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty normal dentate subjects as control group and twenty mandibulectomy patients who had undergone marginal mandibulectomy and wearing a dentomaxillary prosthesis were enrolled. Perceived chewing ability MS and objective ∆E were evaluated using a food intake questionnaire and the colour-changeable chewing gum, respectively. They were instructed to chew the gum continuously for 100 strokes on their usual side. The chewed gum was measured using the CIELAB colour space defined by a colourimeter and L, a* and b* were obtained. The change in colour of the gum after chewing was calculated using CIELAB (∆Eab) and the CIEDE2000 (∆E00) formula. The relationships of a*, ∆Eab, and ∆E00 with MS score were analyzed using the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. RESULTS A correlation was found between perceived chewing ability (MS) and objective mixing ability (index of the masticatory function {∆E}) in marginal mandibulectomy patients. (∆E00 = 0.481, a* = 0.587, ∆Eab = 0.668). CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the CIEDE2000 formula for calculation of colour difference can be used to evaluate masticatory function in patients who have undergone marginal mandibulectomy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the time course of chewing-stimulated salivary flow after oral atropine administration, and determine the association between chewing-stimulated salivary flow and mixing ability using color-changeable chewing gum in dentate adults. METHODS Ten healthy dentate adults were administered 1mg oral atropine to induce mouth dryness. The subjects' chewing-stimulated salivary flow was assessed using the Saxon test. They were then asked to rinse their mouth with tap water for 15s, and to chew on color-changeable chewing gum for 60s at a constant rate of 60 cycles per min. This procedure was performed before, and at 10-min intervals for up to 120min after the atropine administration. The experiment was repeated after 1 week. Steel's test was used to compare the chewing-stimulated salivary flow rates at each time point after atropine administration with the baseline value. The effect of the stimulated salivary flow rates on the degree of color change was analyzed using linear mixed effects models, with the stimulated salivary flow rates as fixed factors and subjects as the random factor. RESULTS Chewing-stimulated salivary flow showed a significant decrease from 50 to 120min after oral atropine administration (P<0.05) and the amount of chewing-stimulated salivary flow had a significant effect on the color change of the color-changeable chewing gum (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS We observed a decrease in stimulated salivary flow after orally administering 1mg atropine, and a positive association between mixing ability using color-changeable chewing gum and chewing-stimulated salivary flow in dentate subjects.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo Descrever e comparar as variáveis cinemáticas temporoespaciais do movimento mandibular durante a mastigação unilateral deliberada e habitual de indivíduos saudáveis. Método Participaram do estudo 8 voluntários saudáveis, do gênero masculino, com faixa etária entre 19 e 24 anos. Os dados cinemáticos foram obtidos através do sistema de análise de movimento Qualysis (QTM - Qualisys Track Manager). Foram realizados registros de mastigação unilateral direita (MU) e habitual (MH) de bala de goma de gelatina de consistência firme. Foram analisadas variáveis relacionadas à (1) sequência mastigatória (duração, número de ciclos e frequência mastigatória); (2) ciclo mastigatório: duração do ciclo mastigatório, amplitude de movimento mandibular vertical e médio-lateral durante o ciclo mastigatório, velocidade máxima durante as fases de abertura e fechamento. A comparação das variáveis durante a MU e MH foi realizada por meio do teste t pareado (p<0,05) e os tamanhos de efeito (‘d’ de Cohen) foram calculados. Resultados Em relação à sequência mastigatória, observou-se menor frequência mastigatória durante MU comparada à MH (1,19±0,21 e 1,29±0,16Hz, respectivamente, p=0,004, d=0,53) e menores velocidades máximas de abertura (MU=67,4 mm/s e MH=80,02; p=0,053; d=0,80) e fechamento (MU=71,77±9,35mm/s e MH=83,51±17 mm/s, p=0,014, d=0,79) do ciclo mastigatório. Conclusão As variáveis cinemáticas relacionadas à sequência e ao ciclo mastigatório foram influenciadas pelo padrão mastigatório adotado – unilateral ou habitual.

Abstract
Background Denture adhesives, characterized as medical products in 1935 by the American Dental Association, have been considered useful adjuncts for improving denture retention and stability. However, many dentists in Japan are hesitant to acknowledge denture adhesives in daily practice because of the stereotype that dentures should be inherently stable, without the aid of adhesives. The aim of this study is to verify the efficacy of denture adhesives to establish guidelines for Japanese users. The null hypothesis is that the application of denture adhesives, including the cream and powder types, or a control (isotonic sodium chloride solution) would not produce different outcomes nor would they differentially improve the set outcomes between baseline and day 4 post-application. Methods This ten-center, randomized controlled trial with parallel groups is ongoing. Three hundred edentulous patients with complete dentures will be allocated to three groups (cream-type adhesive, powder-type adhesive, and control groups). The participants will wear their dentures with the denture adhesive for 4 days, including during eight meals (three breakfasts, two lunches, and three dinners). The baseline measurements and final measurements for the denture adhesives will be performed on the first day and after breakfast on the fourth day. The primary outcome is a general satisfaction rating for the denture. The secondary outcomes are denture satisfaction ratings for various denture functions, occlusal bite force, resistance to dislodgement, masticatory performance, perceived chewing ability, and oral health-related quality of life. Between-subjects comparisons among the three groups and within-subjects comparisons of the pre- and post-intervention measurements will be performed. Furthermore, a multiple regression analysis will be performed. The main analyses will be based on the intention-to-treat principle. A sample size of 100 subjects per group, including an assumed dropout rate of 10 %, will be required to achieve 80 % power with a 5 % alpha level. Discussion This randomized clinical trial will provide information about denture adhesives to complete denture wearers, prosthodontic educators, and dentists in Japan. We believe this new evidence on denture adhesive use from Japan will aid dentists in their daily practice even in other countries. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01712802. Abstract
A large number of studies have reported the findings for masticatory efficiency tests; however, some objective masticatory efficiency tests have a drawback, in that subjects are required to spit out the test material. This study examined the possibility of a masticatory efficiency test that evaluates the intensity of odours released when chewing an odour compound-containing material. A total of 20 volunteers were used in this study. The odour intensity in the breath after chewing a gum was measured by portable odour sensor device. The odour intensity after chewing the gum was measured over four chewing durations and at four intervals between spitting out and measurement of the odour intensity. The volume of stimulated saliva was measured by calculating the difference in the weight of the gauze before and after chewing to examine the effect of saliva flow. With an increase in chewing duration, odour intensity reduced. The odour intensity was the highest immediately after chewing. There was a positive correlation between odour intensity and gummy jelly-related masticatory efficiency test value (G-METV), which was significant for 10-s chewing. The regression equation was calculated from three objective variables of odour intensity and G-METV as dependent variable. Pearson's correlation coefficient between G-METV and the odour intensity-related masticatory efficiency value (O-METV) was 0·68. The coefficient of variation of O-METV was significantly lower than that of G-METV. These results suggest that the masticatory performance can be estimated by measuring the odour intensity immediately after chewing food containing odour compounds for 10 s.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous research determined the relevance of masticatory performance with regard to nutritional status, cognitive functions, or stress management. In addition, the measurement of masticatory efficiency contributes to the evaluation of therapeutic successes within the stomatognathic system. However, the question remains unanswered as to what extent modern techniques are able to reproduce the subtle differences in masticatory efficiency within various patient groups. The purpose of this review is to provide an extensive summary of the evaluation of masticatory performance by means of a color-changeable chewing gum with regard to its clinical relevance and applicability. STUDY SELECTION A general overview describing the various methods available for this task has already been published. This review focuses in depth on the research findings available on the technique of measuring masticatory performance by means of color-changeable chewing gum. Described are the mechanism and the differentiability of the color change and methods to evaluate the color changes. Subsequently, research on masticatory performance is conducted with regard to patient age groups, the impact of general diseases and the effect of prosthetic and surgical treatment. RESULTS The studies indicate that color-changeable chewing gum is a valid and reliable method for the evaluation of masticatory function. CONCLUSION Apart from other methods, in clinical practice this technique can enhance dental diagnostics as well as the assessment of therapy outcomes.

Abstract
Previous studies have identified various factors related to masticatory performance. This study was aimed to investigate variations and impacts of factors related to masticatory performance among different occlusal support areas in general urban population in Japan. A total of 1875 Japanese subjects (mean age: 66·7 years) were included in the Suita study. Periodontal status was evaluated using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). The number of functional teeth and occlusal support areas (OSA) were recorded, and the latter divided into three categories of perfect, decreased and lost OSA based on the Eichner Index. Masticatory performance was determined by means of test gummy jelly. For denture wearers, masticatory performance was measured with the dentures in place. The multiple linear regression analysis showed that, when controlling for other variables, masticatory performance was significantly associated with sex, number of functional teeth, maximum bite force and periodontal status in perfect OSA. Masticatory performance was significantly associated with number of functional teeth, maximum bite force and periodontal status in decreased OSA. In lost OSA, masticatory performance was significantly associated with maximum bite force. Maximum bite force was a factor significantly influencing masticatory performance that was common to all OSA groups. After controlling for possible confounding factors, the number of functional teeth and periodontal status were common factors in the perfect and decreased OSA groups, and only sex was significant in the perfect OSA group. These findings may help in providing dietary guidance to elderly people with tooth loss or periodontal disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE We evaluated the effects of gum chewing on the response to psychological stress induced by a calculation task and investigated the relationship between this response and masticatory performance. METHODS Nineteen healthy adult volunteers without dental problems undertook the Uchida-Kraepelin (UK) test (30 min of reiterating additions of one-digit numbers). Before and immediately after the test, saliva samples were collected from the sublingual area of the participants. Three min after the UK test, the participants were made to chew flavorless gum for 3 min, and the final saliva samples were collected 10 min after the UK test. The experiment was performed without gum chewing on a different day. Masticatory performance was evaluated using color-changing chewing gum. RESULTS Salivary CgA levels at immediately and 10 min after the UK test were compared with and without gum chewing condition. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance revealed significant interaction between gum chewing condition and changes in CgA levels during post 10 min UK test period. A significant correlation was found between changes in CgA levels and masticatory performance in all participants. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that gum chewing may relieve stress responses; however, high masticatory performance is required to achieve this effect.

Abstract
Motor functions of masticatory organs such as the tongue, lips, cheeks and mandible are known to deteriorate with age, thereby influencing masticatory performance. However, there are few reports on the relationships between tongue and lip functions and masticatory performance. To investigate the relationship between tongue and lip functions and comprehensive masticatory performance, by evaluating crushing, mixing and shearing abilities in young dentate adults. Participants comprised 51 dentate adults with a mean age of 25 years. Maximum tongue pressure and oral diadochokinesis were measured to evaluate tongue and lip functions. A multiple sieving method using peanuts was performed to evaluate crushing ability. A colour-changeable chewing gum was performed to evaluate mixing ability. A test gummy jelly was performed to evaluate shearing ability. The relationship between tongue and lip functions and each masticatory performance was assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficients. In addition, stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of crushing ability. Crushing ability was significantly correlated with maximum tongue pressure and the number of repetitions of the syllables /pa/, /ta/ and /ka/. Maximum tongue pressure and number of repetitions of the syllable /pa/ were identified as significant predictors for crushing ability. Mixing ability was significantly correlated with the number of repetitions of the syllable /pa/. Shearing ability was not significantly correlated with tongue and lip functions. Masticatory performance during the chewing of brittle foods such as peanuts and solid foods such as chewing gum appears to be correlated with tongue and lip functions.
