Abstract
Background: Moxibustion has been used in the treatment and prevention of obesity. However, there has been no systematic review or meta-analysis conducted on the use of moxibustion on obesity treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the role of moxibustion in the treatment of obesity. Methods: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, and MEDLINE/PubMed databases were searched to identify all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effect of moxibustion on obesity. The primary outcome was body weight. The secondary outcomes were the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The risk of bias assessment and meta-analysis were conducted using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. Results: Eleven RCTs involving 761 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Other interventions that were included in the analyses were manual acupuncture, electroacupuncture, embedding therapy, herbal medicine, and diet control. Moxibustion combined with other interventions resulted in a significant improvement in body weight reduction (mean difference [MD] -3.32, 95% confidence interval [CI: -4.25 to -2.38]; I2 = 17%), BMI (MD -1.51, 95% CI [-1.88 to -1.14]; I2 = 76%), and WC (MD -2.82, 95% CI [-3.50 to -2.13]; I2 = 75%), but did not improve HC (MD -2.05, 95% CI [-4.21 to 0.11]; I2 = 0%) or WHR (MD -0.01, 95% CI [-0.03 to 0.01]; I2 = 57%). Conclusions: Moxibustion can be used with other interventions to improve body weight, BMI, and WC in people with obesity. However, the conclusions of this review should be cautiously applied to clinical practice because most of the included studies had a high or unclear risk of bias.

Abstract
IMPACT STATEMENT Obesity is a major multi-faceted, chronic disease that increases the risk of morbidity and mortality of children and adults particularly impacting high-risk populations and those of lower socioeconomic status. Given provider time constraints, models of care to effectively and efficiently address obesity in primary care are key. Although physician recommendations can exert a powerful influence on behavior, providers often feel powerless to adequately address obesity due to the complexity of physical and behavioral health problems. This mini-review focuses on describing the feasibility and evidence for tackling obesity through provider-led multidisciplinary weight management programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic that is contributed to by the use of psychopharmacological agents, such as antipsychotics. This study represents a preliminary investigation into the effectiveness of two anticonvulsants that were hypothesized to reduce weight in a pediatric sample seeking treatment at a psychiatric clinic. METHODS The electronic medical records of a university-based child and adolescent psychiatric clinic were reviewed for patients who were first prescribed either topiramate or zonisamide between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2013. Based on inclusionary criteria, the review identified 47 children or adolescents. RESULTS Multilevel modeling was utilized for study analyses. Including the full sample and controlling for confounders, anticonvulsant dosage was uniquely associated with an average reduction in body mass index of 1.3 (dosages above 200 mg) to 4.1 (dosages below 50 mg) every six months of treatment. Exlucing patients whose baseline body mass index was below 25.0 and controlling for confounders, anticonvulsant dosage was uniquely associated with an average reduction in body mass index of 3.2 (dosages above 200 mg) to 6.1 (dosages below 50 mg) every six months of treatment. Weight reduction was not statistically different between topiramate or zonisamide. Anticonvulsants were associated with an increase in body mass index, yet the benefits of the two anticonvulsants on weight loss remained despite the counteractive effects of antipsychotics. CONCLUSIONS Results provide preliminary evidence that topiramate and zonisamide may be utilized for weight loss in a pediatric psychopharmacological treatment seeking sample, even if antipsychotics are also prescribed. A randomized controlled trial investigating the impact of topiramate and zonisamide on weight reduction is warranted.

Abstract
Both visceral obesity and depression are associated with impaired health and excess mortality, possibly through overlapping pathophysiological mechanisms like adipose tissue derived inflammatory markers. These results, however, are primarily based on population-based surveys, often restricted to a young population and depression severity scales instead of patients with established diagnosis of depressive disorder. We examined the relation between waist circumference and late-life depression using the baseline data of The Netherlands Study of Depression in Older people (NESDO). Psychopathology has been assessed with Composite International Diagnostic Interview version 2.1. Adjusted for age, sex, education, lifestyle (smoking, alcohol, physical activity), drug use, cognition and chronic diseases as well as adjusted for body mass index (BMI), analysis of covariance showed that depressed older patients (n=376) had a significantly lower waist circumference (WC) compared to their non-depressed comparisons (n=130): estimated marginal mean (SE)=93.9 (0.5) versus 97.8 (0.8) cm (F=15.9; df=1467; p<.001). Multiple linear regression analyses within the depressed group showed that both, depression severity (Inventory of Depressive Symptoms) as well as duration-related depression characteristics (age of onset, duration of illness, life-time comorbid dysthymia), were associated with the WC. Only the severity of depressive symptoms remained significant after further adjusted for the BMI. Interestingly, a recently discovered adipokine, Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL), was associated with late-life depression, but only in the subgroup of patients with a pathologically increased WC. Population-based findings on the positive association between obesity and depressive symptoms can thus not be generalised to a clinical sample of depressed older patients. The impact of the WC on course and treatment outcome of late-life depression should be examined in clinical samples, taken into account the relative impact of the WC in proportion to the general level of obesity as indexed by the BMI and the role of adipokines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between depression and metabolic syndrome is becoming more obvious. Waist circumference (WC) might be the most important metabolic syndrome (MetS) feature in relation to late-life depression, with a possible mediating role for adiponectin. METHODS Cross-sectional population based survey of 1277 participants (50-70 years). We measured all components of MetS, plasma adiponectin levels and depressive symptoms using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Principal components analysis on the BDI items revealed two factors, representing a cognitive-affective and a somatic-affective symptom-cluster. Multiple linear regression models with the BDI sum score and both depression symptom-clusters as dependent variables, respectively, were used to examine the association with each component of metabolic syndrome adjusted for confounders. We explored sex-differences as well as a hypothesised mediating effect of adiponectin. RESULTS The presence of MetS as well as number of metabolic risk factors were significantly associated with BDI sum score. In men WC, triglycerides and HDL cholesterol explained variance in depressive symptoms, whereas in women this effect was confined to WC. Moreover, irrespective of sex, all associations were primarily driven by the somatic-affective symptom-cluster. Adiponectin neither mediated nor moderated any of the associations found. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional design limits causal interpretation. Being a population-based survey, some selection bias might have occurred toward healthier part of population. CONCLUSIONS Although pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the association between metabolic disturbances and depression remains to be elucidated, our study points to sex-differences as well as a specific phenotype of depression that is associated with metabolic disturbances.

Abstract
Un gain de poids significatif est associé à l’utilisation des antipsychotiques atypiques, des stabilisateurs de l’humeur et des antidépresseurs employés seuls ou en combinaison. Les personnes avec des troubles psychiatriques sont plus à risque de souffrir d’obésité et du syndrome métabolique que la population générale. Une approche prometteuse pour limiter les conséquences physiques et psychologiques du gain de poids est la modification des habitudes de vie. Nous avons révisé la littérature afin de détailler l’impact de ces programmes sur différentes mesures d’effet. Douze des dix-sept études recensées rapportent un impact significatif de leur programme sur le poids en comparaison des soins usuels généralement offerts aux personnes avec des troubles psychiatriques. L’importance de la mise en place de ces programmes pour les patients psychiatriques en externe est soulignée.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite a number of medicinally important pharmacological effects, the therapeutic use of psychostimulants is limited because of abuse potential and psychosis following long term use. Development of pharmacological agents for improving and extending therapeutic use of psychostimulants in narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Parkinson's disease, obesity and as cognitive enhancer is an important research imperative. In this regard, one potential target system is the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; serotonin) neurotransmitter system. The focus of the present article is to evaluate a potential role of 5-HT-1A receptor in the alleviation of abuse potential and psychosis-induced by prescription psychostimulants amphetamines and apomorphine. METHOD Synaptic contacts between dopamine systems and 5-HT-1A receptors are traced. Studies on serotonin-1A influences on the modulation of dopamine neurotransmission and psychostimulant-induced behavioral sensitization are accumulated. RESULTS Inhibition of amphetamine and apomorphine-induced behavioral sensitization by co administration of 5-HT-1A agonists cannot be explained in terms of direct activation of 5-HT-1A receptors, because activation of pre- as well as postsynaptic 5-HT-1A receptors tends to increase dopamine neurotransmission. CONCLUSION Long term use of amphetamine and apomorphine produces adaptive changes in 5-HT-1A receptor mediated functions, which are prevented by the co-use of 5-HT-1A agonists. In view of extending medicinal use of psychostimulants, it is important to evaluate the effects of co-use of 5-HT-1A agonists on potential therapeutic profile of amphetamine and apomorphine in preclinical research. It is also important to evaluate the functional significance of 5-HT-1A receptors on psychostimulant-induced behaviors in other addiction models such as drug self-administration and reinstatement of drug seeking behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence suggests that abdominal obesity is a more important risk factor for the prognosis of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases than BMI. Somatic-affective symptoms of depression have also been linked to cardiovascular risk. The relationship between obesity and depression, however, has remained contradictory. Our aim was therefore to relate body mass index (BMI) and different measures for abdominal obesity (waist circumference, WC, waist-to-hip ratio, WHR, waist-to-height ratio, WHtR) to somatic vs. cognitive-affective symptoms of depression. METHODS In a cross-sectional population based study, data on the first N = 5000 participants enrolled in the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) are reported. To analyze the relationship between depression and obesity, we computed linear regression models with the anthropometric measure (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR) as the dependent variable and life style factors, cardiovascular risk factors and psychotropic medications as potential confounders of obesity/depression. RESULTS We found that only the somatic, but not the cognitive-affective symptoms of depression are consistently positively associated with anthropometric measures of obesity. CONCLUSIONS We could demonstrate that the somatic-affective symptoms of depression rather than the cognitive-affective symptoms are strongly related to anthropometric measures. This is also true for younger obese starting at the age of 35 years. Our results are in line with previous studies indicating that visceral adipose tissue plays a key role in the relationship between obesity, depression and cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine identification and counseling for obesity at pediatric office visits associated with psychotropic medications. DESIGN AND METHODS Analysis of ambulatory care visits by children 2-17 years in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys and outpatient component of the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys from 2005 to 2008. Physician identification of obesity was determined using ICD-9 CM diagnostic codes. RESULTS In 2005-2008, there were 38,539 pediatric ambulatory care visits weighted to represent 600 million pediatric visits nationally. Psychotropic medications were associated with 5.2% of visits. The prevalence of overweight/obesity (BMI ≥ 85th%tile) was 15.9% for visits without psychotropic medication, 19.4% and 16.8% for visits associated with nonobesogenic and obesogenic psychotropic medications, respectively. Controlling for age, gender, and BMI, obesity was more likely to be identified at visits associated with psychotropic medications (OR 5.2, 95% CI 3-8.8), among females (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.1-2.3) and non-Hispanics (OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.0-2.4). At visits with psychotropic medications, dietary counseling was provided at 11.4%, while blood pressure and cholesterol screening were obtained at 6.9% and 6.8% of these visits, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate suboptimal identification and counseling for obesity children who are prescribed psychotropic medications, despite their increased risk for weight gain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinically significant depression is present in 25 % of individuals with type 2 diabetes, its risk being doubled in women. PURPOSE To examine the effectiveness of the Study of Women's Emotions and Evaluation of a Psychoeducational (SWEEP), a group therapy for depression treatment based on cognitive behavioral therapy principles that was developed for women with type 2 diabetes was conducted. METHODS Women with significantly elevated depression symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale ≥16) were randomized to SWEEP (n = 38) or usual care (UC, n = 36). RESULTS Multilevel modeling indicated that SWEEP was more effective than UC in reducing depression (mean difference of -15 vs. -7, p < .01), decreasing trait anxiety (mean difference of -15 vs. -5, p < .01), and improving anger expression (mean difference of -12 vs. -5, p < .05). Although SWEEP and UC had improvements in fasting glucose (mean difference of -24 vs. -1 mg/dl) and HbA1c (mean difference of -0.4 vs. -0.1 %), there were no statistically significant differences between groups. CONCLUSIONS SWEEP was more effective than UC for treating depressed women with type 2 diabetes. Addition of group therapy for depression meaningfully expands the armamentarium of evidence-based treatment options for women with diabetes.

Abstract
There is extensive international evidence that people with severe mental illness have a lower standard of physical health than the general population. This leads to higher morbidity and mortality rates. Many of the causes for this poor physical health are modifiable. Yet the physical needs of this consumer group are neglected by healthcare systems in Australia, and elsewhere. While medical specialists are clearly integral to remedying this, nurses are well placed to play a key role in focused prevention and early intervention in the physical well-being of consumers with mental health problems. This paper outlines the specifics on how mental health nurses can be sensitized, prepared and empowered to help turn this serious health issue around. In particular, mental health nurses could be trained in and then utilize a new physical health check and response system in the UK (called the Health Improvement Profile) if adapted for use within Australia. This profile will be briefly introduced, and then its value to improving health care discussed.

Most of the content herein is based on literature reviews. In areas of uncertainty, professional judgment was applied. These guidelines are a working document that reflects the state of the field at the time of publication. Because rapid changes in this area are expected, periodic revisions are inevitable. We encourage medical professionals to use this information in conjunction with their best clinical judgment. The presented recommendations may not be appropriate in all situations. Any decision by practitioners to apply these guidelines must be made in light of local resources and individual patient circumstances. The American Society for Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition fully endorses sections of these guidelines that address the metabolic and nutritional management of the bariatric surgical patient.

Abstract
This brief review examines hyperphagia and associated weight gain as undesirable side effects of psychiatric medications; exploring the scope of the problem, proposed mechanisms, and potential interventions. Mechanisms of action appear to include drug-mediated effects on hypothalamic appetite pathways that have been implicated in other etiologies of obesity. There is great individual variation in response to these medications as well as variation in the degree of weight gain within drug classes. Gene polymorphisms may be a key factor in determining individual variations in response. Better understanding of the underlying mechanisms can guide useful interventions. Medication selection and dosing appear to be important strategies to minimize adverse weight gain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and type 2 diabetes are increasing significantly in the Hispanic population and in the Hispanic population with schizophrenia. In the Diabetes Prevention Project (DPP), cognitive-behavioral (CB) interventions were more effective in reducing weight and preventing diabetes. OBJECTIVE To test a CB group intervention based on the DPP model among Hispanic individuals with schizophrenia on weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist-hip circumference (WH). STUDY DESIGN Pilot study using a pre-post quasi-experimental design and convenience sample of 8 subjects from a public mental health clinic who met for 8 weekly group meetings. RESULTS No significant differences in BMI, weight, or WH scores based on t-test results; the subjects' weight remained stable, there was a trend toward weight loss, and no one gained weight during the trial. CONCLUSIONS No further weight gain is a finding that merits further research using a larger sample size and a randomized controlled design. J Am Psychiatr Nurses Assoc, 2008; 13(6), 353-359.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several lines of evidence suggest that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor hypofunction may be associated with schizophrenia. Activation of metabotropic glutamate 5 (mGlu5) receptors enhances NMDA receptor mediated currents in vitro, implying that allosteric modulation of mGlu5 receptors may have therapeutic efficacy for schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to determine if positive allosteric modulators of mGlu5 receptors are effective in reversing two cellular effects of NMDA receptor antagonists that are relevant to schizophrenia: increases in corticolimbic dopamine neurotransmission and disruption of neuronal activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). METHODS In freely moving rats, we measured the effects of the positive modulator of mGlu5 receptor 3-cyano-N-(1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)benzamide (CDPPB) alone or in combination with the NMDA antagonist MK801 on 1) spontaneous firing and bursting of medial PFC (mPFC) neurons, and 2) dopamine release as measured by microdialysis in the mPFC and nucleus accumbens (NAc). RESULTS The predominant effect of CDPPB on mPFC neurons was excitatory, leading to an overall excitatory population response. Pretreatment with CDPPB prevented MK801-induced excessive firing and reduced spontaneous bursting. In contrast, CDPPB had no significant effect on basal dopamine release as compared with control rats and did not alter MK801-induced activation of dopamine release in the mPFC and NAc. CONCLUSIONS These results show that positive modulation of mGlu5 receptors reverses the effects of noncompetitive NMDA antagonists on cortical neuronal firing without affecting dopamine neurotransmission. Thus, these compounds may be effective in ameliorating PFC mediated behavioral abnormalities that results from NMDA receptor hypofunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A single axial image measured between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae (L4-L5) is most frequently chosen to approximate total abdominal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume, but growing evidence suggests that this measurement site is not ideal. OBJECTIVE The objective was to determine the single magnetic resonance (MR) image that best approximates the total VAT volume in a biracial sample of healthy subjects. DESIGN We used contiguous abdominal MR images to measure VAT area and summed them to determine total VAT volume. The sample included 820 healthy men and women (n = 692 whites, 128 blacks) aged 18-88 y. RESULTS A range of MR images had equally high correlations with total VAT in each race and sex group. The image 6 cm above L4-L5 (L4-L5 + 6) was within the best equivalent range for all race and sex groups. The L4-L5 + 6 image crossed the L3 vertebra in 85% of subjects and crossed the L2-L3 intervertebral space or the L2 vertebra for 15% of subjects. Linear regression models indicated that the L4-L5 + 6 image explained 97% of the variance in total abdominal VAT volume, and additional covariates did not increase the R(2) value significantly. The L4-L5 image explained 83% of the variance in VAT volume, and the covariates accounted for an additional 7% of the variance. Rank-order values for VAT can change if total VAT volume is approximated by a single image area. Whereas 25% of subjects changed rank by >or=10% with the L4-L5 image, only 3% changed rank to that degree with the L4-L5 + 6 image. CONCLUSIONS A single MR image located approximately at the L3 vertebra can accurately estimate total VAT volume in blacks and whites of both sexes.

Abstract
Antidepressant pharmacotherapy has dramatically improved the quality of life for many patients. However, prolonged use may induce weight gain, resulting in enhanced risk for treatment noncompliance. Cannabinoid CB(1) receptor antagonists decrease food intake and body weight, but may also affect mood. We investigated in female Sabra mice first, whether acute treatment with the cannabinoid receptor antagonist rimonabant (5-(4-Chlorophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-N-(piperidin-1-yl)-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxamide, SR141716, 5 mg/kg) interfered with the tricyclic antidepressant desipramine (15 mg/kg) or the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine (20 mg/kg) in the Porsolt forced swimming test. Second, whether chronic treatment (3 months) with desipramine (5 mg/kg) enhanced weight gain and whether cotreatment with rimonabant (2 mg/kg), prevented the excessive weight gain, while retaining antidepressant effectiveness. Motor activity and anxiety-like behavior were also investigated. The acute studies indicated that rimonabant did not influence 'antidepressant' activity of desipramine or fluoxetine. In the chronic studies, desipramine enhanced weight gain, despite the observation that the injection procedure reduced weight gain. The enhanced weight gain continued at least 35 days after treatment ended. Rimonabant reduced weight gain to which no tolerance developed and which persisted at least 30 days beyond treatment. Mice cotreated with rimonabant and desipramine had body weights closer to controls or to those receiving rimonabant alone than to those treated with desipramine alone. The antidepressant effects of desipramine were maintained throughout treatment; this was not altered by the chronic rimonabant treatment at any time, although rimonabant together with desipramine transiently enhanced anxiety-like behavior. These observations suggest that combined treatment with antidepressants and cannabinoid CB(1) receptor antagonist to prevent undesirable weight gain, should be further investigated.

Abstract
There have been significant advances in the treatment of depression since the serendipitous discovery that modulating monoaminergic neurotransmission may be a pathological underpinning of the disease. Despite these advances, particularly over the last 15years with the introduction of selective serotonin and/or norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), there still remain multiple unmet clinical needs that would represent substantial improvements to current treatment regimens. In terms of efficacy there have been improvements in the percentage of patients achieving remission but this can still be dramatically improved and, in fact, issues still remain with relapse. Furthermore, advances are still required in terms of improving the onset of efficacy as well as addressing the large proportion of patients who remain treatment resistant. While this is not well understood, collective research in the area suggests the disease is heterogeneous in terms of the multiple parameters related to etiology, pathology and response to pharmacological agents. In addition to efficacy further therapeutic advances will also need to address such issues as cognitive impairment, pain, sexual dysfunction, nausea and emesis, weight gain and potential cardiovascular effects. With these unmet needs in mind, the next generation of antidepressants will need to differentiate themselves from the current array of therapeutics for depression. There are multiple strategies for addressing unmet needs that are currently being investigated. These range from combination monoaminergic approaches to subtype selective agents to novel targets that include mechanisms to modulate neuropeptides and excitatory amino acids (EAA). This review will discuss the many facets of differentiation and potential strategies for the development of novel antidepressants.

Abstract
Classic and modern antipsychotics can induce substantial weight gain causing diabetes, lipid abnormalities and psychological distress. Treatment emergent weight gain varies within the broad class of antipsychotics; however, an individual's propensity to develop weight gain largely depends on genetic factors. The first part of this review highlights current ideas and concepts related to antipsychotic-induced weight gain, including principles on energy homeostasis. The second part summarizes genetic findings emphasizing studies published after 2003 as prior studies have been reviewed in detail elsewhere. Candidate gene studies have produced significant findings in the 5-hydroxytryptamin 2C (5HT2C) and adrenergic alpha2a (ADRalpha2a) receptor genes, as well as in the leptin, guanine nucleotide binding protein (GNB3) and synaptomal-associated protein 25kDa (SNAP25) genes. Results from genome-wide association and linkage studies point to several chromosomal regions (e.g., 12q24) and some specific genes (e.g., promelanin concentrating hormone [PMCH], polycyctic kidney and hepatic disease 1 [PKHD1], peptidylglycine alpha-amidating monooxygenase [PAM]). However, more efforts are needed before risk prediction and personalized medicine can be made available for antipsychotic-induced weight gain.

Abstract
The number of bariatric surgical procedures performed in the United States has increased steadily during the past decade. Currently accepted criteria for consideration of bariatric surgery include a body mass index (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) of 40 kg/m2 or greater (or >35 kg/m2 with obesity-related comorbidities), documented or high probability of failure of nonsurgical weight loss treatments, and assurance that the patient is well informed, motivated, and compliant. Appropriate patient selection is important in achieving optimal outcomes after bariatric surgery. In this article, we review our approach to the medical and psychological assessment of patients who want to undergo bariatric surgery. The medical evaluation is designed to identify and optimally treat medical comorbidities that may affect perioperative risks and long-term outcomes. The psychiatric and psychological assessment identifies factors that may influence long-term success in maintaining weight loss and prepares the patient for the lifestyle changes needed both before and after surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Given the considerable time and research cost of analyzing biomedical images to quantify adipose tissue volumes, automated image analysis methods are highly desirable. Hippo Fat is a new software program designed to automatically quantify adipose tissue areas from magnetic resonance images without user inputs. Hippo Fat has yet to be independently validated against commonly used image analysis software programs. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to compare estimates of VAT (visceral adipose tissue) and SAT (subcutaneous adipose tissue) using the new Hippo Fat software against those from a widely used, validated, computer-assisted manual method (slice-O-matic version 4.2, Tomovision, Montreal, CA, USA) to assess its potential utility for large-scale studies. METHODS A Siemens Magnetom Vision 1.5-T whole-body scanner and a T1-weighted fast-spin echo pulse sequence were used to collect multiple, contiguous axial images of the abdomen from a sample of 40 healthy adults (20 men) aged 18-77 years of age, with mean body mass index of 29 kg/m(2) (range=19-43 kg/m(2)). RESULTS Hippo Fat provided estimates of VAT and SAT that were highly correlated with estimates using slice-O-matic (R (2)>0.9). Average VAT was 9.4% lower and average SAT was 3.7% higher using Hippo Fat compared to slice-O-matic; the overestimation of SAT tended to be greater among individuals with greater adiposity. Individual-level differences for VAT were also substantial; Hippo Fattrade mark gave estimates of VAT ranging from 1184 cm(3) less to 566 cm(3) more than estimates for the same person using slice-O-matic. CONCLUSION Hippo Fat provides a rapid method of quantifying total VAT, although the method does not provide estimates that are interchangeable with slice-O-matic at either the group (mean) or individual level.
