Abstract
Background To explore the association between the number of missing teeth and the prevalence of hyperlipidemia in a Chinese adult population. Methods 13,932 adults were investigated in the TCLSIH cohort study. The number of missing teeth was determined at baseline through a self-reported questionnaire, and then classified into three categories: 0, 1-2, and ≥3. We defined hyperlipidemia as total cholesterol (TC) ≥ 5.17 mmol/L or triglycerides (TG) ≥ 1.7 mmol/L or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ≥ 3.37 mmol/L or a self-report of physician-diagnosed hyperlipidemia during follow-up visits. Cox proportional-hazards regression models were employed to assess the relationship between the number of missing teeth and incident hyperlipidemia. Results A total of 6756 first-incident cases of hyperlipidemia occurred during 42,048 person-years of follow-up (median follow-up, 4.2 years). After adjusted confounders, multivariable HRs and 95% CI for incident of hyperlipidemia across the categories of missing teeth were as follows: in male participants, 1.00 (reference), 1.10 (0.98, 1.22), and 1.03 (0.91, 1.16) (P for trend = 0.30); in female participants, 1.00 (reference), 1.09 (0.99, 1.19), and 1.18 (1.04, 1.33) (P for trend < 0.01). Conclusion The number of missing teeth is associated with an increased risk of hyperlipidemia in female participants but not in male participants. Systemic chronic inflammation may potentially mediate this association.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the existence of a bidirectional temporal relationship between periodontal condition and glycaemic status. MATERIALS AND METHODS This longitudinal study included 2198 participants with mean age 43.4 ± 7.7 years, who underwent dental examinations in Yokohama, Japan, at two time points, 2003-2004 and 2008-2009, at an interval of 5 years. Periodontal condition was assessed by the mean value of probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Glycaemic status was assessed by fasting glucose and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). RESULTS The cross-lagged panel models showed the effect of HbA1c at baseline on mean PPD at follow-up (β = 0.044, p = .039). There was a marginal effect of fasting glucose on the mean PPD (β = 0.037, p = .059). It was similar to the effect of fasting glucose or HbAlc on mean CAL. However, in the opposite direction, no effect of mean PPD or CAL at baseline on fasting glucose or HbAlc at follow-up was identified. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated a unidirectional relationship between glycaemic status and periodontal condition. The study population, however, had mostly mild periodontitis. Future studies are needed to investigate the effect of periodontal condition on glycaemic status in patients with severe periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is closely associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). An alteration of FGF21 is possibly affected by periodontitis. The present study aimed to investigate the levels of serum FGF21 in MetS patients with generalized periodontitis and its association with periodontal and metabolic parameters. METHODS One hundred forty-six MetS patients were recruited from the CORE (Cohort Of patients at a high Risk for Cardiovascular Events) Thailand registry. All participants received general data interviewing, periodontal examination and blood collection for measurement of FGF21 levels and biochemistry parameters. Periodontitis was defined according to the new classification and divided into two groups of localized periodontitis and generalized periodontitis. RESULTS FGF21 was significantly higher in generalized periodontitis group when compared with localized periodontitis group (p < 0.05). The significant correlation was observed between FGF21 and variables including number of remaining teeth, mean clinical attachment loss, hypertriglyceridemia and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The elevation of serum FGF21 was associated with presence of generalized periodontitis after adjusting of covariate factors (OR = 27.12, p = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS The elevation of serum FGF21 might be a potential biomarker for MetS patients who have risk of generalized periodontitis.

Abstract
This study aimed to estimate the risk of mortality related to the number of missing teeth in a South Korean population. The ≥ 40-year-old population of the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort 2002–2003 was analyzed. Participants were selected from a total of 220,189 participants and included in groups of 0 teeth lost, 1–2 teeth lost, and ≥ 3 teeth lost. Among the total population, 17,211 participants were included in no missing teeth, 1–2 missing teeth, and ≥ 3 missing teeth and were randomly matched 1:1:1 for age and sex. Mortality from specific causes and all-cause mortality were compared among the groups. The hazard ratio (HR) of the number of missing teeth for all-cause mortality or each cause of mortality was analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models. According to the cause of death, the HRs for metabolic disease, digestive disease, and trauma were greater in the group with ≥ 3 missing teeth than in the no missing teeth group. The group with ≥ 3 missing teeth indicated a 1.19-fold higher HR for all-cause mortality than the no missing teeth group [95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) = 1.12–1.27, P < 0.001]. The group with 1- 2 missing teeth did not show a higher HR for all-cause mortality. In the group with 1–2 missing teeth, the HRs for mortality from mental disease and digestive disease were higher than those in the no missing teeth group. The group with 1–2 missing teeth did not show a higher HR for all-cause mortality. The number of missing teeth was linked with a higher risk of mortality. For specific causes of mortality, mortality from metabolic disease, digestive disease, and trauma was higher in the participants with the number of missing teeth.

Impact of Impaired Glucose Metabolism on Periodontitis Progression over Three Years. Dent J (Basel) 2022; 10:dj10010010. Abstract
We evaluated the relationship between glucose abnormalities and periodontitis in overweight/obese individuals. Eight hundred and seventy (870) diabetes-free participants aged 40-65 years completed the three-year follow-up in the San Juan Overweight Adults Longitudinal Study. The ADA thresholds for fasting and 2-h post-load glucose and HbA1c were used to define prediabetes. The NHANES methods were used to assess periodontitis. Multivariable linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship between baseline glucose metabolism measures and periodontitis at follow-up, adjusting for potential confounders. There was no association between impaired glucose measures and mean pocket depth (PD), mean clinical attachment loss (CAL), or mean percent of sites ≥5 mm PD. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) was associated with a lower mean percent of sites ≥5 mm CAL (β = -1.6, p = 0.037). Prediabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) were associated with improvement in mean percent of sites ≥5 mm PD (β = -1.4, p = 0.022; β = -1.6, p = 0.032; respectively). IFG and IGT were associated with improvement in mean percent of sites with ≥5 mm CAL (β = -1.6, p = 0.038; β = -1.9, p = 0.020; respectively). In conclusion, there were no consistent associations between baseline prediabetes or insulin resistance and periodontitis progression over a three-year period.

Abstract
This study longitudinally examines the relationship between the frequency of toothbrushing and the development of selected components of metabolic syndrome (MetS), along with the potential role of salivary biomarkers in this relationship. In 2014, 6317 12-year-old children underwent health examinations (T1), of which, 348 children participated in the second stage of data collection in 2019 (T2). The association between the change in the metabolic status during the 5-year follow-up examination (between T1 and T2) and frequency of toothbrushing was assessed using multinomial logistic regression analyses. At T2, healthy adolescents had significantly higher odds of toothbrushing twice or more daily compared with adolescents with components of MetS (OR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.15-3.45). Adolescents who were healthy at T1 but developed components of MetS at T2, had significantly higher frequencies of dining-out compared with adolescents with components of MetS at both T1 and T2 (OR = 0.09, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.49). Adolescents who were 'healthy' at both T1 and T2 had significantly (p < 0.05) lower levels of C-reactive protein (T2), insulin (T1 and T2), interleukin-6 (T1) and adiponectin (T1) compared with adolescents who had components of MetS. Toothbrushing and frequency of dining-out were associated with the presence of MetS components.

Abstract
There are very few studies on metabolic syndrome (MetS) and oral health in postmenopausal women. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the association between MetS and its components and the number of remaining teeth in postmenopausal women in Korea. The study selected 3320 menopausal women (40-79 years old) from those who participated in the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (2016-2018). Multiple regression and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the association between MetS and its components and the number of remaining teeth. According to the multiple regression analysis, the regression coefficient (B) values were -1.62 (p < 0.05), -1.31 (p < 0.05), -1.60 (p < 0.05), and -2.28 (p < 0.05) in the hypertension group, hyperglycemia group, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol group, and MetS prevalence group, respectively. This indicates that the number of remaining teeth was lower in the MetS prevalence group as compared to the non-prevalence groups. As observed in the multiple logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio of the number of remaining teeth (less than 20) was higher in the MetS prevalence group (1.82 (p < 0.05)) as compared to the non-prevalence groups (1.25 (p < 0.05) in the abdominal obesity group, 1.50 (p < 0.05) in the hypertension group, 1.36 (p <0.05) in the hyperglycemia group, and 1.72 (p < 0.05) in the low HDL cholesterol group). Therefore, our results indicate that abdominal obesity, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and prevalence of MetS are associated with tooth loss in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on tooth loss in adults from a population-based sample. METHODS Cross-sectional analysis based on data from a cohort study (2009-2014) with adults from Southern Brazil. MetS (exposure), lack of functional dentition and number of lost teeth (outcomes) were assessed using self-reported, lab and clinical data. Possible confounders included sex, age, family income, educational level, smoking status and sugar consumption. The effect of MetS on the outcomes was estimated using conventional logistic or negative binomial regression models. Marginal structural modeling (MSM) with stabilized weights (a counterfactual analytical method) was also used to enhance group comparability and estimate causal effects. RESULTS 1,283 participants had available information for the outcomes. Individuals with MetS were more likely to experience a lack of functional dentition than those without MetS [odds ratio (OR) from logistic regression 1.7, 95% CI 1.0-2.9; OR from MSM 3.2, 95% CI 2.3-4.6]. Moreover, the number of teeth lost was 20% higher in participants with MetS compared to those without MetS in conventional analysis (mean ratio [MR] 1.2, 95% CI 1.1- 1.3). The MR increased to 1.7 (95% CI 1.5-2.0) when using MSM. CONCLUSION Our findings provide evidence on the effect of MetS on tooth loss. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract
Simple Summary There are conflicting results existing regarding the association between dental status and metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to analyze the association between the sum of the standard dental unit (SDU) scores of planned (SDU-P) and delivered (SDU-D) dental procedures per patient with MetS. Included were data from the Dental, Oral, Medical Epidemi-ological (DOME) study records-based research, which integrated large socio-demographic, medical, and dental databases of a nationally representative sample of young to middle-aged military personnel (N = 131,927). The present study demonstrated that SDU-P, but not SDU-D, is a better predictor of systemic morbidities related to MetS. In other words, MetS is associated with a higher dental treatment needs burden, rather than with dental treatments performed de facto. The study concludes that dental and general health authorities should collaborate and share in-formation and focus on reducing common health-related risk factors, such as smoking and sugar consumption, in particular among high-risk populations, such as immigrants and those with lower SES and rural locality. The SDU score of each dental procedure represents the time and complexity of the executed procedure. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the Dental, Oral, Medical Epidemiological (DOME) repository, which includes comprehensive socio-demographic, medical, and dental databases of a nationally representative sample of 132,529 military personnel. Univariate analyses revealed that SDU-P had statistically significant positive associations with all systemic morbidities related to MetS, while the SDU-D exhibited positive associations with some of the systemic morbidities and with lower ORs. SDU-P and SDU-D were associated with worse scores of auxiliary examinations used in the assessment of MetS components. SDU-P retained significant positive associations in the multivariate analysis with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) (OR = 7.40 (1.91–28.57)), deep vein thrombosis (DVT) (OR = 5.61 (1.53–20.83)), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (OR = 5.05 (2.40–10.63)), and fatty liver (OR = 1.82 (1.17–2.84)). In contrast, obesity was the only systemic parameter retaining a significant association with SDU-D following multivariate analysis (OR = 1.47 (1.23–1.76)). It can be concluded that SDU-P, but not SDU-D, is a better predictor of systemic morbidities related to MetS. In other words, MetS is associated with a higher dental treatment needs burden, rather than with dental treatments performed de facto. Abstract
AIM Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is known to develop into liver fibrosis, which increases the risk of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. The association between periodontal condition and fibrotic progression of NAFL is unclear. This study aimed to clarify this longitudinal association. MATERIALS AND METHODS Among 4812 participants aged 35-64 years undergoing annual health check-ups between 2003 and 2004, and follow-up 5 years later, 392 participants were diagnosed with NAFL. After excluding participants with liver fibrosis at baseline, 341 participants were followed up for 5 years. NAFL disease fibrosis score of ≥-1.455 was used to evaluate the probability of the presence of liver fibrosis. RESULTS During the follow-up period, 10.6% of participants progressed to liver fibrosis. A higher clinical attachment level (CAL) tended to be associated with the incidence of liver fibrosis in the logistic regression analysis (odds ratio [OR] 1.82, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.94-3.49, p = .074). The stratified analysis by obesity revealed a significant association with higher CAL in obese participants (OR 2.87, 95% CI, 1.23-6.69, p = .015), but not in non-obese participants. CONCLUSION Higher CAL was associated with an increased probability of liver fibrosis in obese adults with NAFL.

Abstract
Background Toothbrushing is a health-related lifestyle habit and has been reported to contribute not only to oral health but also to some parameters of general health; however, little research has been conducted to understand the association of the frequency and timing of toothbrushing with the development of comprehensive metabolic abnormalities, with consideration of oral health condition. In this study, using longitudinal data, we examined this association in Japanese adults, adjusting for periodontal condition. Methods A 5-year longitudinal study was performed with 4,537 participants between 35 and 64 years old who underwent an annual dental examination in both 2003 and 2008. Data about toothbrushing habits and metabolic abnormalities, such as obesity, hyperglycemia, diabetes, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, and low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, were analyzed using Poisson regression analysis. Results The percentage of participants with a toothbrushing frequency ≤1 time/day was 29.4%, and that for those not brushing their teeth at night was 21.4%. The incidences of obesity and hyperglycemia after 5 years were 5.5% and 28.4%, respectively. A toothbrushing frequency ≤1 time/day was associated with development of obesity (prevalence rate ratio [PRR] 1.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12–2.80), after adjusting for periodontal condition and potential risk factors. A significant association between not brushing teeth at night and hyperglycemia (PRR 1.30; 95% CI, 1.02–1.66) was observed in participants with toothbrushing frequency of 1 time/day. No association was found between toothbrushing habits and other metabolic abnormalities. Conclusions This study suggests that toothbrushing habits are associated with the development of obesity and hyperglycemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to verify the existence and level of scientific evidence concerning the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS), as the main exposure, and tooth loss (TL), as the outcome. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED Through electronic databases and partially through gray literature, the authors identified observational studies in adults. The authors used no date or language restrictions. The authors evaluated the studies' methodological quality by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The authors conducted a random-effects model meta-analysis. The authors assessed the quality of evidence by using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation criteria. RESULTS Twelve studies met the eligibility criteria, and 9 were retained for the meta-analysis. Most were cross-sectional studies with good methodological quality. Participants with MetS had fewer teeth (standardized mean difference, -2.77; 95% confidence interval, -4.56 to -0.98) and an increased likelihood of lacking functional dentition (odds ratio, 2.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.89 to 2.96) than did those without MetS. The overall quality of evidence was very low. CONCLUSIONS AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Better-conducted longitudinal studies are necessary to establish a causal relationship between MetS and TL to inform the best strategies to prevent TL in populations with MetS.

Abstract
It has recently become evident that the periodontium (gingiva, desmodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone) and the associated microbiota play a pivotal role in regulating human health and diseases. The oral cavity is the second largest microbiota in the body with around 500 different bacterial species identified today. When disruption of oral cavity and dysbiosis occur, the proportion of strict anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria is then increased. Patients with periodontitis present 27 to 53% more risk to develop diabetes than the control population suggesting that periodontitis is an aggravating factor in the incidence of diabetes. Moreover, dysbiosis of oral microbiota is involved in both periodontal and metabolic disorders (cardiovascular diseases, dyslipidaemia …). The oral diabetic dysbiosis is characterized by a specific bacteria Porphyromonas, which is highly expressed in periodontal diseases and could exacerbate insulin resistance. In this review, we will address the nature of the oral microbiota and how it affects systemic pathologies with a bidirectional interaction. We also propose that using prebiotics like Akkermansia muciniphila may influence oral microbiota as novel therapeutic strategies. The discovery of the implication of oral microbiota for the control of metabolic diseases could be a new way for personalized medicine.

Abstract
PURPOSE In general, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and tooth loss increases with age. We investigated the relationship between the presence of MS, its elements, and tooth loss in middle-aged Korean adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included Korean adults between 30 and 64 years of age who resided in the capital area of Seoul. From January to June 2014, individuals interested in participating in the oral health survey among those who visited the university hospital's cardiovascular center and provided informed consent were selected. Among 748 subjects who responded to the oral health questionnaires, 30 were excluded due to unclear responses; therefore, a total of 718 were included in the final analysis. RESULTS The crude odds ratio (OR) of ≥one MS component affecting tooth loss was 1.45 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06-2.00]. After adjusting for sex, age, education, income level, occupation, smoking status, kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and rheumatic disease, the adjusted OR was 1.47 (95% CI, 1.06-2.05), which was statistically significant (p<0.05). The OR for tooth loss was higher in the presence of ≥one component of MS (50-64 years of age) in females. CONCLUSION This study suggests that female aged 50-64 years may have higher likelihood of tooth loss upon the presence of at least one MS component. Prevention against MS among female of older age could contribute to maintenance of remaining teeth. Further well-designed studies are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The combined associations of body mass index (BMI) levels and metabolic dysfunction with medical and dental care utilizations is unclear. METHODS A 4-year follow-up study was performed in 16,386 Japanese male employees (mean age 48.2 [standard deviation, 11.0] years) without a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, or renal failure. They were classified into eight phenotypes based on four BMI levels (underweight, <18.5; normal weight, 18.5-24.9; overweight, 25.0-29.9; and obese, ≥30.0 kg/m2) and the presence or absence of ≥2 of 4 metabolic abnormalities: high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, and high blood sugar. Based on their health insurance claims data, we compared medical and dental care days and costs among the eight different BMI/metabolic phenotypes during 2010-2013. RESULTS The combinations of BMI levels and metabolic status were significantly associated with the adjusted mean and median medical outpatient days and costs and the median dental outpatient days and costs. The obese/unhealthy subjects had the highest medical outpatient days and costs, and the underweight/unhealthy subjects had the highest dental outpatient days and costs. The underweight/unhealthy subjects also had the highest medical inpatient days and hospitalization rates of CVD, and had higher medical costs compared with the obese/healthy subjects. The differences in median medical costs between healthy and unhealthy phenotypes were larger year by year across all BMI levels. CONCLUSIONS Identification of obesity phenotypes using both BMI levels (including the underweight level) and metabolic status may more precisely predict healthcare days and costs compared with either BMI or metabolic status alone.

Abstract
AIMS Long-term oral chronic inflammatory process is closely related to systemic inflammation, which is a main mechanism involved in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Tooth loss could reflect the accumulation of oral local inflammation, implying that number of missing teeth may associate with NAFLD. This study evaluated the association between missing teeth and presence of NAFLD in a general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study of 24,470 adults was carried out from the Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study. The self-reported number of missing teeth (excluding third molars) was recorded and classified into four categories: 0, 1-2, 3-5, and ≥6. The NAFLD was diagnosed by the liver ultrasonography. Associations were analysed by adjusted multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS The multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of NAFLD across the categories of missing teeth were as follows: in males, 1.00 (reference), 1.04 (0.93-1.16), 1.06 (0.90-1.24), and 1.40 (1.09-1.81) (p for trend = 0.04); in females, 1.00 (reference), 0.98 (0.83-1.15), 1.11 (0.90-1.37), and 1.07 (0.77-1.48) (p for trend = 0.45). CONCLUSIONS The number of missing teeth was associated with a higher presence of NAFLD in males but not females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have reported that oral health status is associated with various systemic health issues. This study examined the correlations among oral health, lifestyle factors, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in aged participants. METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional oral and medical health checkup data from 2,379 participants aged 75 and 80 years. MetS was diagnosed according to the Harmonization criteria, with the exception of the criterion for central obesity, and body mass index was used instead of waist circumference. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the correlation between oral health status and lifestyle factors and MetS in both sexes and by sex. RESULTS In both sexes, the odds ratio (OR) for MetS was 1.54 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-2.17) among those who had 0-9 teeth compared with those with 20-28 teeth. MetS was significantly more likely for those eating quickly than those eating slowly (OR 2.06; 95% CI, 1.35-3.16). Participants using secondary oral hygiene products every day had a significantly lower OR (0.71; 95% CI, 0.55-0.92) for MetS than did those who did not. Participants with 0-9 teeth who ate quickly had a significantly higher OR (2.48; 95% CI, 1.06-5.78) for MetS compared with those with 20-28 teeth who ate slowly. CONCLUSION These results suggest that maintaining teeth, eating slowly, and using secondary oral hygiene products every day are associated with a lower likelihood of MetS in the aged population.

Abstract
AIM To examine the effect of toothbrushing on the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), including assessment of periodontal status, in middle-aged adults. METHODS This 5-year follow-up retrospective study was performed in 3,722 participants (2,897 males and 825 females) aged 35-64 years who underwent both medical check-ups and dental examinations. Metabolic components included obesity, elevated triglycerides, blood pressure, fasting glucose and reduced high-density lipoprotein. Toothbrushing frequency was assessed using a questionnaire. Periodontal disease was defined as having at least one site with a pocket depth of ≥4 mm. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between toothbrushing frequency at the baseline examination and the development of MetS (≥3 components). RESULTS During follow-up, 11.1% of participants developed MetS. After adjusting for potential confounders including periodontal disease, participants with more frequent daily toothbrushing tended to have significantly lower odds of developing MetS (p for trend = .01). The risk of development of MetS was significantly lower in participants brushing teeth ≥3 times/day than in those brushing teeth ≤1 time/day (odds ratio = 0.64, 95% confidence interval = 0.45-0.92). CONCLUSIONS Frequent daily toothbrushing was associated with lower risk of development of MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal disease is shown to be aggravated by an increase in the count of metabolic risk factors. This study aims to evaluate the effects of metabolic risk factors on periodontal parameters and salivary oxidative stress markers related to menopausal status. METHODS One hundred and seventy-six women were categorized according to menopausal status, either premenopause (Pre/M) (n = 86) or postmenopause (Post/M) (n = 90). The count of metabolic risk factors was evaluated. Sociodemographics and systemic status were determined via questionnaire and medical records. After clinical periodontal measurements and saliva collection, myeloperoxidase (MPO), total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and automatic colorimetric method. Oxidative stress index (OSI) was also calculated. RESULTS The count of metabolic risk factors was higher in the Post/M group than the Pre/M group. Periodontal parameters and TOS levels were elevated by an increase in the count of metabolic risk factors. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that periodontal (clinical attachment level and missed teeth) and oxidative (MPO and OSI) parameters increased and TAOC levels decreased due to menopause. Additionally, positive relationships between periodontal and oxidative parameters were determined. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that salivary oxidative stress level may be an indicator of worsened periodontal status related to menopause and the count of metabolic risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the increasing need to prevent obesity and oral diseases in adolescents worldwide, few studies have investigated the link existing between these conditions and their common risk factors. This study aims to evaluate the oral health and weight status of New Caledonian Children (aged 6,9,12 years) and to identify, amongst 12-year-olds, risk indicators that may characterize the groups of children affected by oral diseases, obesity or both diseases. METHODS This survey evaluated in 2011-2012 the oral health and stature-weight status and related risk indicators in a national representative sample of 6, 9 and 12 years-old children in New Caledonia. Dental status, chewing efficiency, height, weight and waist circumference were clinically recorded at school. The body mass index (BMI) and the waist to height ratio (WtHR) were calculated. For BMI the WHO Cut-offs were used. Twelve years-old participants responded to a questionnaire concerning socio-demographic and behavioural variables. For statistical analysis, the Clinical Oral and Global Health Index (COGHI) was developed and used. Twelve years-old children were categorised into four groups; Oral Diseases (ODG), Obesity (OG), Obesity and Oral Diseases (ODOG) and a Healthy Group (HG). A multivariate analysis was conducted using mixed-effects multinomial logistic regression models. RESULTS Prevalence of overweight and obesity was greatly increasing from 6 years (respectively 10.8% [8.8;13.3] and 7.8% [6.0;9.9]) to 12 years (respectively 22.2% [19.9;24.7] and 20.5% [18.2;22.9]) and one third of the 12-yr-olds had an excess of abdominal adiposity. At age 12, 36.6% of the children were healthy (HG), 27.3% had oral diseases (ODG), 19.7% were obese (OG) and 16.5% had both conditions (ODOG). Geographical location, ethnicity, tooth-brushing frequency and masticatory disability were significant risk factors for the OG, ODOG and ODG groups. Ethnicity and masticatory impairment were common risk indicators for the association of oral diseases and obesity. CONCLUSIONS In NC health promotion programs should be specifically addressed towards Native populations who are particularly exposed to oral diseases and obesity, integrating a multiple risk factors approach, in order to prevent the onset of chronic diseases in adulthood. The impact of masticatory ability on children's weight status is a major issue for future research.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome, a cluster of 3 or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease, is associated with periodontal disease, but few studies have been prospective in design. This study's aim was to determine whether metabolic syndrome predicts tooth loss and worsening of periodontal disease in a cohort of 760 men in the Department of Veterans Affairs Dental Longitudinal Study and Normative Aging Study who were followed up to 33 y from 1981 to 2013. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured with a standard mercury sphygmomanometer. Waist circumference was measured in units of 0.1 cm following a normal expiration. Fasting blood samples were measured in duplicate for glucose, triglyceride, and high-density lipoprotein. Calibrated periodontists served as dental examiners. Periodontal outcome events on each tooth were defined as progression to predefined threshold levels of probing pocket depth (≥5 mm), clinical attachment loss (≥5 mm), mobility (≥0.5 mm), and alveolar bone loss (≥40% of the distance from the cementoenamel junction to the root apex, on radiographs). Hazards ratios (95% confidence intervals) of tooth loss or a periodontitis event were estimated from tooth-level extended Cox proportional hazards regression models that accounted for clustering of teeth within individuals and used time-dependent status of metabolic syndrome. Covariates included age, education, smoking status, plaque level, and initial level of the appropriate periodontal disease measure. Metabolic syndrome as defined by the International Diabetes Federation increased the hazards of tooth loss (1.39; 1.08 to 1.79), pocket depth ≥5 mm (1.37; 1.14 to 1.65), clinical attachment loss ≥5 mm (1.19; 1.00 to 1.41), alveolar bone loss ≥40% (1.25; 1.00 to 1.56), and tooth mobility ≥0.5 mm (1.43; 1.07 to 1.89). The number of positive metabolic syndrome conditions was also associated with each of these outcomes. These findings suggest that the metabolic disturbances that comprise the metabolic syndrome may play a role in the development or worsening of periodontitis.
