Abstract
BACKGROUND The connection between sleep problems and behavioural challenges in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) has been a central focus of research across different age groups. However, uncertainty remains regarding this association, particularly when relying solely on daily-based assessments. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep problems and behavioural challenges at both overall (macro) and daily (micro) levels among youth with DS. METHODS Sleep disturbances were measured in a sample of 65 youth with DS aged 6-17 years using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and actigraph watches assessing sleep efficiency, sleep duration and wake after sleep onset. Behavioural challenges were evaluated through externalising and internalising subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and of the Scales of Independent Behavior, Revised (SIB-R). RESULTS The findings demonstrated that over a period of time, sleep problems are significantly associated with both externalising and internalising behaviours as measured by CSHQ and CBCL, even after accounting for the effects of IQ and SIB-R Broad Independence. No significant correlations were observed on a daily basis over seven consecutive days, as measured by actigraphy and both externalising and internalising indices of SIB-R. CONCLUSIONS The results highlight the complexity of the sleep-behaviour relationship in DS, indicating that while chronic sleep issues impact long-term behaviours, nightly variations do not predict immediate behavioural changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited research has looked at the present-day sleep problems among Chinese children with Down syndrome (DS). This study aimed to investigate the situation of the sleep problems of school-aged children with DS in northern China. METHODS Parents of children with DS were a convenience sample recruited through the special education schools of Shandong Province in China. The Chinese version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire was applied to assess the sleep problems of children with DS. RESULTS Parents of 334 children with DS reported the average sleep duration was 9.7 (9.3-10.2) hours per night, and 62.0% of children with DS were reported sleeping less than 10 h per night. Additionally, the total prevalence rate of sleep problems among children with DS was 69.8%. Sleep-disordered breathing (59.2%), sleep duration (33.8%) and bedtime resistance (32.0%) were the three most commonly reported sleeping problems. Younger children with DS (age 6-8 years) had severe problems with bedtime resistance, sleep anxiety and parasomnias than older children with DS (age 9-12 years) (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Sleep problems are prominent among children with DS in northern China and are worthy of attention. Caregivers and health professionals should raise awareness of sleep problems in this group of children and implement targeted interventions to improve their sleep quality as early as possible.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities, and children with DS have increased risks of receiving diagnoses of specific comorbidities. AIMS This study aimed to assess the frequencies and relationships between sleep problems, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, comorbid psychopathology, and challenging behavior. METHODS AND PROCEDURES The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, Gastrointestinal Symptom Inventory, Autism Spectrum Disorder-Comorbid for Children, and Behavior Problems Inventory-Short Form were completed by 123 parents of children and adolescents with DS. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS The frequency of GI symptoms was 74.8 %, with high frequencies also found for: sleep problems (100 %), challenging behavior (100 %), and moderate to severe levels of comorbid psychopathology (tantrum=80 %; repetitive behavior=63 %; avoidant behavior=82 %; worry/depressed=61 %; conduct behavior=100 %; over-eating=100 %; under-eating=100 %). A significant moderate correlation was found between total GI symptoms and self-injurious behavior frequency. Children who presented with abdominal pain engaged in self-injurious behavior more frequently than those with no abdominal pain. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Findings indicated a high frequency of sleep problems, comorbid psychopathology, GI symptoms, and challenging behavior and demonstrated a relationship between GI symptoms and self-injurious behavior in children and adolescents with DS. This research illustrated the importance of investigating comorbid conditions in individuals with DS. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS?: Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition characterized by trisomy 21 and is a leading cause of intellectual disability worldwide. The prevalence of DS is commonly associated with advanced maternal age and is associated with multiple comorbid conditions. The current study aimed to investigate the frequency of and relationship between sleep problems, gastrointestinal symptoms, comorbid psychopathology, and challenging behavior in children and adolescents with DS. High-frequency levels were found for sleep problems (100 %), challenging behavior (100 %), gastrointestinal symptoms (74.8 %), and moderate to severe levels of the different comorbid psychopathologies (tantrum=80 %; repetitive behavior=63 %; avoidant behavior=82 %; worry/depressed=61 %; conduct behavior=100 %; over-eating=100 %; under-eating=100 %). The findings of this paper highlighted the frequency and comorbidities that exist between gastrointestinal symptoms, sleep problems, comorbid psychopathology, and challenging behavior. Analyses indicated that those who presented with abdominal pain, engaged in self-injurious behavior more frequently. Sleep problems, gastrointestinal symptoms, comorbid psychopathology, and challenging behavior in children and adolescents with Down Syndrome.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are very common across neurodevelopmental disorders and place a large burden on affected children, adolescents, and their families. Sleep disturbances seem to involve a complex interplay of genetic, neurobiological, and medical/environmental factors in neurodevelopmental disorders. In this review, we discuss animal models of sleep problems and characterize their presence in two single gene disorders, Rett Syndrome, and Angelman Syndrome and two more commonly occurring neurodevelopmental disorders, Down Syndrome, and autism spectrum disorders. We then discuss strategies for novel methods of assessment using wearable sensors more broadly for neurodevelopmental disorders in general, including the importance of analytical validation. An increased understanding of the mechanistic contributions and potential biomarkers of disordered sleep may offer quantifiable targets for interventions that improve overall quality of life for affected individuals and their families.

Abstract
Sleep is a major concern in Down syndrome children. Obstructive sleep apnea, delayed sleep onset, night-time and early awakenings have been reported contributing to the cognitive and behavioral outcomes. The aim is to evaluate sleep related difficulties in Down syndrome young children. A questionnaire of sleep related difficulties was translated and validated into Arabic language then was filled in by caregivers of 45 Down syndrome and 48 normal children. The questionnaire consisted of sections related to snoring, breathing difficulties, mouth breathing, upper respiratory tract infections, sleep position, restless sleep and frequent awakening, and daytime behavior. The results show highly significant differences between the total and subtotal questionnaire scores with higher scores in the control group. The questionnaire has a good reliability. Test-retest reliability of the questionnaire revealed a significant positive correlation in the total questionnaire and all the subitems except for the 7th subitem of the daytime behavior which showed no significant correlation. The questionnaire showed 100% sensitivity and 70.8% Specificity with at cut-off value of 8.5. The sleep related difficulties questionnaire has good psychometric properties and could detect significant sleep problems in Down syndrome children. Abstract
Children with Down syndrome are at increased risk of obstructive sleep disordered breathing, which has deleterious effects on daytime functioning. We aimed to examine the effects of treatment of sleep disordered breathing on sleep quality and daytime functioning in children with Down syndrome, and hypothesised that these would be improved. Thirty-four children completed a baseline study and a follow-up 2 years later. Measures at both time points included 7 days of actigraphy and parents completed a number of questionnaires assessing sleep, behaviour, daytime functioning, and quality of life. All children had overnight polysomnography at baseline; 15 children (44%) were treated. At baseline the treated group had more severe sleep disordered breathing compared with the untreated group: obstructive apneoa-hypopnoea index 29.3 ± 38.2 events/h versus 3.3 ± 5.2 events/h (p < 0.01). Actigraphy showed no significant differences in total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep schedules from baseline to follow up in either group. The sleep disturbance (p < 0.01) and total problems (p < 0.05) scales on the OSA-18 and the sleep disordered breathing subscale on the Paediatric Sleep Problem Survey Instrument (p < 0.01) improved in the treated children. There were no changes in any measure in the untreated children. Treatment of sleep disordered breathing improves symptoms, sleep disturbance and quality of life in children with Down syndrome, but has no demonstrable impact on actigraphic sleep measures or daytime behaviour or function. In contrast, children who were not treated, despite having less severe disease at baseline, had increased sleep disruption and no change in quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with intellectual disabilities are more likely to experience sleep problems, which can affect quality of life, physical health, mental health and well-being. METHODS An integrative literature review was conducted to investigate what is known about behavioural sleep disturbances in people with an intellectual disability. The search used the following databases: Scopus, PsycInfo and Cinahl, to find papers published since 2015. RESULTS Within intellectual disability research, sleep appears as a common issue due to its high prevalence, negative relationships with an individual's physical and mental health, their quality of life, and impact of sleep problems on family or carers. The growing evidence base appears to support the use of behavioural, lifestyle and pharmacological interventions to improve sleep in people with an intellectual disability. CONCLUSION A wide array of literature provides evidence that people with intellectual disabilities are affected by and need support with their sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study compared measurements of sleep and wake assessed with actigraphy, sleep diary and polysomnography in children with Down syndrome (DS) and also compared measures of actigraphic sleep recording in children with DS and typically developing (TD) children. METHODS Children with DS aged 3-19 years (N = 44) referred for assessment of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) underwent overnight polysomnography, together with 1 week of actigraphy with sleep diary. Actigraphy data from the children with DS were compared with data collected from TD children, matched for age and sex. RESULTS 22 children (50%) with DS completed >3 consecutive nights of actigraphy with a matched sleep diary. There were no differences between bedtimes, wake times or time in bed on weeknights, weekends or over 7 nights between actigraphy and sleep diary. Total sleep time was over estimated by the sleep diary by almost 2 h and the number of night awakenings under-reported. Compared to matched TD children (N = 22), there was no difference in total sleep time, however children with DS fell asleep more quickly (p < 0.001), had more awakenings (p = 0.001) and more time awake after sleep onset (p = 0.007). Children with DS exhibited less variability in both bedtimes and wake times, and fewer had >1 h sleep schedule variability. CONCLUSIONS Parental sleep diaries over-estimate total sleep time but accurately report bed and wake times compared to actigraphy in children with DS. Children with DS have more regular sleep patterns than TD children of the same age, which is important for optimising daytime functioning. The reasons behind this warrant further investigation.

Abstract
Mothers of school-aged children ages 3 to 17 years with developmental disabilities (DDs) commonly report sleep problems in their children associated with impaired maternal sleep. However, existing research relies heavily on mothers' self-reported sleep. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of objectively measuring child and mother sleep-wake patterns using actigraphy and videosomnography. This was an observational pilot study. Mothers wore actigraphy watches and video-recorded their child's sleep for 7 nights. Mothers also completed a 7-day sleep diary and questionnaires on sleep quality, depressive symptoms, stress, and child sleep problems. Ten mothers (32-49 years) and ten children with DDs (8-12 years) completed this study. Half of the children were boys with autism spectrum disorders. We successfully recruited 77% of eligible mothers for the study during the pandemic. Eight mothers successfully wore the actigraphy, and nine successfully video-recorded their child's sleep. Mothers rated their participation positively and considered the data collection protocol acceptable. While mothers' sleep patterns from actigraphy were mostly within recommendations, self-reported sleep quality was poor. Child's sleep estimates from videosomnography showed children slept substantially less than recommended sleep hours. Mothers also reported a high frequency of child sleep problems. Consistent with this pattern, mothers also endorsed elevated stress and depression. The use of actigraphy and videosomnography is feasible. Objective sleep measurement for mothers' and children's sleep is needed with self-report to measure multidimensional aspects of sleep and discrepancies between objective and self-report sleep measures. Future studies can use multi-methods sleep measures and work toward interventions that can improve family sleep and reduce mothers' stress and depression.

Abstract
An essential part of the care of children with Down syndrome is secondary screening for comorbidity. It is well known that comorbidity frequently occurs in these children. A new update of the Dutch Down syndrome medical guideline was developed to create a sound evidence base for several of these conditions. We present the latest insights and recommendations from this Dutch medical guideline which are based on the most relevant literature currently available and developed with rigorous methodology. The main focus of this revision of the guideline was on obstructive sleep apnea and other airway problems and hematologic disorders, such as transient abnormal myelopoiesis, leukemia, and thyroid disorders. Conclusion: This is a short summary of the latest insights and recommendations from the updated Dutch medical guideline for children with Down syndrome.

Abstract
People with Down syndrome (DS) commonly experience challenges with sleep, executive functioning, everyday memory, and symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A path analysis was conducted to determine if executive function mediated the relationship between sleep problems and both everyday memory and ADHD symptoms. Parents of 96 children and youth with DS completed questionnaires related to sleep, executive functioning, everyday memory, and ADHD symptoms. Results showed that executive functioning fully mediated the relation between sleep and both everyday memory and ADHD symptoms. Implications for education and intervention for children and youth with DS are discussed.

Abstract
Kabuki syndrome (KS) is a rare epigenetic disorder caused by heterozygous loss of function variants in either KMT2D (90%) or KDM6A (10%), both involved in regulation of histone methylation. While sleep disturbance in other Mendelian disorders of the epigenetic machinery has been reported, no study has been conducted on sleep in KS. This study assessed sleep in 59 participants with KS using a validated sleep questionnaire. Participants ranged in age from 4 to 43 years old with 86% of participants having a pathogenic variant in KMT2D. In addition, data on adaptive function, behavior, anxiety, and quality of life were collected using their respective questionnaires. Some form of sleep issue was present in 71% of participants, with night-waking, daytime sleepiness, and sleep onset delay being the most prevalent. Sleep dysfunction was positively correlated with maladaptive behaviors, anxiety levels, and decreasing quality of life. Sleep issues were not correlated with adaptive function. This study establishes sleep disturbance as a common feature of KS. Quantitative sleep measures may be a useful outcome measure for clinical trials in KS. Further, clinicians caring for those with KS should consider sleep dysfunction as an important feature that impacts overall health and well being in these patients.

Abstract
Sleep is a major concern, especially in people with Down Syndrome (DS). Beyond Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a number of other sleep difficulties have been reported in children with DS, such as delayed sleep onset, night-time awakenings, and early morning awakenings. The detrimental effect of sleep difficulties seems to contribute to and exacerbate the cognitive and behavioral outcomes of DS. Although the screening for sleep disorders is recommended early in age in DS, only a few studies have evaluated the sleep profile in preschool-age children with DS. The aim of the current study was to assess the association between sleep disturbances and behavioral problems in a group of preschool-age children with DS, by means of a feasible and easy-to-administer parent-report questionnaires. Seventy-one preschool-age children with DS, ranging in age from 3 to 5.11 years, were included in this retrospective study. Sleep disturbances were evaluated by means of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children, while emotional and behavioral problems by means of the Child Behavior Checklist. Sleep breathing disorders were the most frequent sleep difficulties reported by parents. Moreover, children with clinical scores in total sleep problems exhibited elevation of psychopathological symptoms, namely Total problems, Affective problems, Anxiety problems, Pervasive Developmental Problems, and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Problems. The identification of the broader connection between sleep difficulties and emotional and behavioral problems in preschool-age children with DS leads to important considerations for intervention.

Abstract
Parents of 30 school-age children with Down syndrome participated in a small-scale randomized clinical trial of a behavioral sleep treatment designed specifically for children with Down syndrome. The aim was to improve child sleep, child daytime behavior problems, caregiver sleep, and caregiver stress. The intervention spanned 5-8 weeks, and assessments occurred pre-treatment, immediately post-treatment, and three months post-treatment using a double-blinded design. Both the active treatment and a treatment-as-usual attention-controlled comparison group showed improvements in actigraphy and parent-report measures of child sleep, parent-reported child internalizing behaviors, and actigraphy measures of parent-sleep. The behavioral sleep treatment did not yield significantly different outcomes than a treatment-as-usual approach supplemented with non-sleep-specific behavioral or education sessions. Possible interpretations of study findings are discussed.

Abstract
Currently available screening instruments for evaluation of individuals with intellectual disabilities do not capture all the complications associated with Down Syndrome (DS). Here, we examined age and gender-specific variability revolving around major challenges related to ophthalmologic and auditory health, social integration, daily life, and behavioral problems in 468 (age: 2–84 years) individuals with DS living in all eight divisions of Bangladesh. More than half of the children presented with significant difficulty in walking or other targeted movements compared with 37.9% of adolescents (p = 0.03). Nearly 70% of children exhibited communication difficulties, particularly revolving around the understanding of speech, comprehending or learning tasks or new materials, and in expressing thoughts in words or behaviors (p = 0.003–0.006). Uncontrolled urination was frequent and predominantly found among children (p = 0.04). No significant differences were present in females vs. males except for concern about physical appearance (females: 58.5% vs. males: 47.5%; p = 0.02). The severity of DS was associated with intellectual performance, communication difficulties, and self-sufficiency (i.e., uncontrolled micturition or bowel movements) but not with psychotic, ophthalmologic, auditory, or motor skills-related problems. Increased awareness of DS phenotypic profiles among professionals and caregivers can foster earlier detection and counselling and help formulate appropriate interventions to reduce long-term sequelae and enhance cognitive and behavioral developmental outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Terms currently used to describe the so-called challenging and disruptive behaviors (CBDs) of children with intellectual disabilities (ID) have different connotations depending on guiding contextual frameworks, such as academic and cultural settings in which they are used. A non-judgmental approach, which does not attempt to establish existing categorical diagnoses, but which describes in a neutral way, is missing in the literature. Therefore, we tried to describe CDBs in youth with ID in an explorative study. METHODS Interviews with families investigated the CDBs of five youth with Down syndrome. At home, families tracked youth's sleep/wake behaviors and physical activity. Youth were observed in a summer school classroom. The collected information and suggested explanatory models for observed CDBs were reviewed with the families. RESULTS We grouped CDBs as challenging, if they were considered to be reactive or triggered, or unspecified, if no such explanatory model was available. A third category was created for light-hearted CDBs: goofy, acknowledging the right to laugh together with peers. We found some relationships between sleep, physical activity, and CDBs and developed an explorative approach, supporting a child-centered perspective on CDBs. CONCLUSION The controversial discussions on terminology and management of CDBs in the literature demonstrate the need for a non-judgmental approach. Such an explorative approach, allowing non-professionals to not label, has been missing. The fact that, up to now, the light-hearted behaviors of an individual with ID have not been integrated in commonly-used behavioral checklists as their natural right, proves our concept and indicates that a paradigm change from judgment-based to exploratory-driven approaches is needed.

Abstract
Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WSS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutation in KMT2A and characterized by neurodevelopmental delay. This study is the first prospective investigation to examine the sleep and behavioral phenotypes among those with WSS through parent-informant screening inventories. A total of 24 parents of children/adults with WSS (11F, Mean age = 12.71 years, SD = 8.17) completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and 22 of these caregivers also completed the Modified Simonds and Parraga Sleep Questionnaire (MSPSQ). On average, the majority of those with WSS (83%) were rated to show borderline to clinical level of behavioral difficulties on the SDQ. Approximately 83% were rated in these ranges for hyperactivity, 63% for emotional problems, and 50% for conduct problems. When applying prior published clinical cut-off for risk of sleep disturbance among those with neurodevelopmental disorders, over 80% of our sample exceeded this limit on the MSPSQ. Largely, caregivers' ratings suggested restless sleep, rigid bedtime rituals, sleep reluctance and breathing through the mouth in sleep were most consistent problems observed. Partial correlations between sleep and behavioral domains showed elevated emotional problems were associated with parasomnia characteristics after controlling for age. Daytime drowsiness and activity were associated with more hyperactivity. Those with more night waking problems and delayed sleep onset were rated to show more severe conduct problems. Overall, these findings suggest dysfunctional sleep behaviors, hyperactivity, and affective problems are part of the neurobehavioral phenotype of WSS. Routine clinical care for those affected by WSS should include close monitoring of sleep and overactive behaviors.

Objective: To describe the sleep problems experienced by children with Down syndrome attending a tertiary sleep clinic and relationship with behaviour, function and cognition. Carers completed the Abbreviated Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire, Child Behaviour Checklist and Life-Habits Questionnaire at enrolment. Cognitive assessment (Stanford-Binet 5) was undertaken by a trained psychologist. Children received management for their sleep problem as clinically indicated. Results: Forty-two subjects with a median age of 6.8 years (Interquartile Range-IQR 4.5, 9.8) were enrolled. A total of 92% were referred with snoring or symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), with 79% of those referred having had previous ENT surgery. Thus, 85% of all participants underwent a sleep study and 61% were diagnosed with OSA (OAHI ≥ 1/h). Based on questionnaires, 86% of respondents indicated that their child had a significant sleep disorder and non-respiratory sleep problems were common. Non-respiratory problems included: trouble going to sleep independently (45%), restless sleep (76%), night-time waking (24%) and bedtime resistance (22%). No significant correlations were found between sleep measures (behavioural and medical sleep problems) and the behavioural, functional or cognitive parameters. Conclusion: Sleep disorders were very common, especially non-respiratory sleep problems. OSA was common despite previous surgery. No association was found between sleep-related problems (snoring, sleep-study-confirmed OSA or non-respiratory sleep problem) and parent-reported behavioural problems, functional impairments or intellectual performance. This may reflect limitations of the measures used in this study, that in this population ongoing problems with daytime function are not sleep related or that a cross-sectional assessment does not adequately take into account the impacts of past disease/treatments. Further research is required to further evaluate the tools used to evaluate sleep disorders, the impact of those disorder on children with Down syndrome and interventions which improve both sleep and daytime function.

Abstract
Sleep problems have a bi-directional impact on the daytime performance of children, parental well-being, and overall family functioning in the general population. Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at a high risk of sleep problems, yet the relationship between sleep problems, adaptive functioning, and family stress in children with DS is not well documented. We examined the relationship between sleep (i.e., duration and quality) and child and parent/family functioning. Sixty-six children with DS wore an actigraph for a week to assess their sleep duration and sleep efficiency. Their parents completed ratings on child sleep duration and parasomnias, child adaptive functioning, parental depression and sleep, and family stress. The parents' reports of their children's sleep duration were associated with parental depressive symptoms. The parents' reports of their children's restless sleep behaviors were associated with poorer performances in child-compliant/calm behaviors, worse parental sleep, and negative parental feelings and sibling relationships. The findings from actigraph measures of the children's sleep demonstrated that greater sleep efficiency was associated with greater child adaptive functioning and fewer parental depressive symptoms. The study findings provide preliminary evidence that sleep problems are related to child adaptive functioning, parental functioning, and family stress in children with DS.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The aim of this review was to summarize the existing literature on the association between sleep problems and cognition, function, and behavior in children with Down syndrome. METHODS Embase, PubMed, CINAHL, and PsychINFO databases were searched to retrieve all studies published between 1990 and 2018 that evaluated the relationship between sleep and cognition, function, or behavior in children with Down syndrome. RESULTS Fifteen articles were included, which were mostly of a cohort or case-controlled design. Five articles addressed sleep and cognition only, 6 reported on sleep and behavior, and only 1 reported on sleep and functional ability. Three papers evaluated sleep and both cognition and behavior. Findings varied across studies with methodological differences, making it difficult to directly compare results. The association between sleep and behavior or cognition in children with Down syndrome remains uncertain, but a large study in 110 children provides strong evidence of a negative impact of sleep disorders on the accomplishment of daily life habits. CONCLUSIONS The impact of coexisting sleep disorders in children with Down syndrome has not been widely studied, with only 15 relevant studies found through an extensive literature review. Large well-designed studies are required to fully understand this relationship further. This is important as sleep-disordered breathing and difficulties with sleep patterns and routines are highly prevalent in children with Down syndrome. Sleep may be one of the few treatable factors that can assist in improving long-term outcomes in this population.

Abstract
Despite sleep disturbances are common among youths with Down syndrome (DS), the cognitive and behavioral features associated with sleep problems have not yet been studied extensively. The present study investigated the presence of sleep disturbances in a group of children and adolescents with DS and their cognitive and behavioral correlates. Seventy-one children and adolescents with DS underwent a neuropsychological evaluation, whereas parents completed questionnaires for the screening of the child's sleep, emotional and behavioral problems. We found no association between sleep disturbances and sex, nonverbal IQ, nor adaptive abilities. However, we found that age was positively associated with disorders in initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS) and disorders of excessive somnolence (DOES), while body mass index was related with DOES. We also detected a relationship between visual-motor integrations and DIMS, as well as multiple associations between sleep disturbances and psychopathological and behavioral problems, mainly externalizing symptoms. The present study provided a detailed characterization of sleep problems in relation to several features of youths with DS. The proper identification of sleep disturbances profile in the DS population could support the process of clinical evaluation, in particular for psychopathological aspects.

Abstract
This systematic review assessed the prevalence of restless sleep in children, documented the association of restless sleep with other conditions, and summarized the existing evidence regarding whether restless sleep should be considered a distinct sleep disorder. A comprehensive search of electronic databases was performed using the broad search term "restless sleep" in all fields. Of the 266 articles retrieved, 107 were retained for inclusion in this review. The majority (n = 93) were observational studies. The studies were grouped under several pathologic/condition categories: sleep-disordered breathing (n = 19); adenotonsillectomy (n = 7); respiratory disorders, otitis media, and smoke exposure (n = 12); sleep-related movement disorders and restless sleep disorder (n = 11); neurologic or psychiatric disorders (n = 7); Down syndrome/other neurodevelopmental disorders (n = 10); sleep-related bruxism and other sleep disorders (n = 7); and restless sleep in the general population/mixed clinical samples (n = 18). A high prevalence of restless sleep was found in children with many of these underlying conditions, likely related to associated inherent sleep disruption and frequent awakenings (e.g., apnea and periodic limb movements), pain, sleep instability, and caregiver perception. The majority of studies identified restless sleep as reported by the caregiver, only 34 studies attempted to define restless sleep further. Four studies provided supportive evidence for designating restless sleep as an independent sleep disorder, restless sleep disorder (RSD). This review highlights the fact that the prevalence, etiology and sequelae (including daytime impairments) of restless sleep in children are important topics deserving of further research and that clinical definitions based on empirical evidence need to be developed. The designation of "primary" versus "secondary" restless sleep may be a useful construct, especially with regard to developing clinical trials and treatment algorithms.

Abstract
Sleep problems are common among children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). We review sleep disturbance in three major NDDs: autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). We review associations with functional impairment, discuss how patterns of sleep disturbance inform understanding of etiology, and theorize about mechanisms of impairment. Sleep disturbance is a transdiagnostic feature of NDDs. Caregivers report high rates of sleep problems, including difficulty falling or staying asleep. Polysomnography data reveal differences in sleep architecture and increased rates of sleep disorders. Sleep disturbance is associated with functional impairment and stress among families. Further research is needed to elucidate mechanisms of impairment and develop more effective interventions. Despite significant sleep disturbance in FASD, limited research is available.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Down syndrome is associated with poor sleep but little is known about its neural correlates. AIMS The current research compared brain morphometry in youth with Down syndrome with parent-reported sleep problems (DS-S) to peers with Down syndrome (DS) and typical development (TD) without parent-reported sleep problems matched on age (M = 15.15) and sex ratio (62 % female). METHODS AND PROCEDURES Magnetic resonance imaging was completed on a 3 T scanner. Participants were stratified into groups based on parent-report: DS-S (n = 17), DS (n = 9), TD (n = 22). Brain morphometry, processed with the FreeSurfer Image Analysis Suite, was compared across groups. In addition, the co-occurrence of medical conditions in the DS groups was examined. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS Youth with DS-S had reduced total, frontal, parietal, and temporal brain volumes relative to DS and TD peers. They also had higher rates of congenital heart defects than the DS-only group; however, this comorbidity did not appear to account for morphometry differences. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Parent-reported sleep problems in DS appear to relate to global and localized volume reductions. These preliminary results have implications for understanding the neural correlates of poor sleep in DS; they also highlight the importance of examining relations between sleep and other medical comorbidities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are common among children with Down syndrome (DS), and they can have a serious impact on children with DS as well as their parents and other family members. Specific aims of this study were to evaluate parent-reported sleep problems in children with DS and to examine the relationship between the sleep behaviour of children with DS and their parents' quality of life (QOL). METHOD A cross-sectional survey was conducted in September and October of 2017. Parents of children with DS were recruited from an online self-support community for parents of children with DS in South Korea. The mean age of the parents and children with DS was 40.40 years (SD = 5.09) and 7.89 years (SD = 3.03), respectively. Children's sleep problems and parents' QOL were assessed using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire and the abbreviated version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life scale, respectively. RESULTS Results revealed that 83% of the parents reported that their child with DS experienced sleep problems. Children with DS had significantly more bedtime resistance, night waking, parasomnias and sleep-disordered breathing than did typically developing children. In addition, their Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire scores were higher than those of typically developing children. Moreover, being older, being male and having more severe developmental delays were significant risk factors for sleep problems among children with DS. Furthermore, sleep problems in children with DS negatively affected parents' QOL. CONCLUSIONS Sleep problems negatively affect children with DS as well as their parents; therefore, health care providers should be aware of these issues and help parents manage sleep problems proactively.

Abstract
Down syndrome (DS), the most common human chromosomal malformation, has an estimated annual incidence of one in 1000 live births worldwide. Sleep problems are common in children with DS, reported by parents in up to 65% of school-aged children, significantly higher rates than in typically developing (TD) children. Problems include difficulty in sleep initiation and maintenance together with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) which affects up to over 90%, of DS children compared with 1-5% in the general paediatric population. Any sleep problem has the potential to exert significant negative effects on daytime behaviour, learning and quality of life in TD children and there is now a growing body of evidence that children with DS are similarly affected. In addition to adverse effects on daytime functioning, OSA has adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and this is a particularly significant issue given the high rates of hypertension and premature cardiac disease in people with DS. This review discusses the effects of sleep problems and OSA on daytime functioning and cardiovascular function in children with DS and evidence of the effectiveness of treatment in improving outcomes and quality of life for these children.
