Abstract
Introduction Feed cost has gradually increased in poultry production worldwide. One approach to minimizing production cost is dietary manipulation of nutrient supplies through improved feed efficiency. The inclusion of lipids in broiler diets is essential to meet metabolisable energy requirement. This study aimed to investigate the effects of adding lysophospholipids (LP) to diets varying in sources and levels of vegetable oils on growth performance, ileal digestibility of nutrients, and serum lipids of heat-stressed broilers. Methods A total of 320 Ross 308 broiler chicks were used in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of two oil sources (soybean oil; SO, and palm oil; PO), two levels of oil (3 and 6%), and two levels of LP (0 and 100 mg/kg), with four replicates and 10 birds in each replicate. From 28 to 42 days of age, broilers were exposed to 36°C for 5 h everyday. Results Supplementation of LP to broilers diet increased BWG from 1 to 21 d of age and for the whole period (p < 0.05). Broilers fed diet containing 6% oil with LP had lower FI from d 22 to 42 d, and better FCR from 22 to 42 d of age and over the entire period (p < 0.05). Apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of EE, and AIDE was higher in diets containing 6% oil than diets with 3% oil (p < 0.05). The AID of EE, and AIDE were higher in broilers fed LP in the diets containing 6% oil (p < 0.05). The LP supplementation to diets reduced serum TG, total cholesterol, and LDL-C, whereas enhanced HDL-C concentrations at 42 d of age (p < 0.05). Conclusion It was concluded that broilers fed diets containing SO performed better, and LP supplementation enhanced the performance of broilers fed diets containing higher levels of oils.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of fresh corn extract (FCE) on chicken meat quality, 135-day-old Jingyuan chicken hens were fed diets containing different doses of FCE (CON, 0.3% FCE, 0.6% FCE and 0.9% FCE) until 180 day-old in this study. Meat performance measurements showed that the 0.6% FCE group of Jingyuan chickens had higher intramuscular fat (IMF), pressing loss (PL), amino acid and fatty acid contents (P < 0.05). Their breasts were collected for transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses (n=8), and 210 Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 29 Differentially expressed genes (DEMs) were obtained. Gene Ontology (GO) analyses of DEGs indicate multiple entries involved in IMF synthesis such as skeletal system development and cellular response to amino acid stimulation. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (GSEA-KEGG) analysis identified sphingolipid_metabolism and multiple genes affecting IMF deposition including SPHK1, CERS1, CERS6, GLB1L, SGMS2, UGT8, and UGCG. KEGG and metabolite correlation analyses of DEMs identified Aspartate, PI 38:5; PI(18:1/20:4), PI 36:3; PI(18:1/18:2), PI 36:2; PI(18:0/18:2), and PI 34:1; PI(16:0/18:1) as the likely major influences on IMF deposition in the DEMs. Correlation analysis revealed that shear force (SF) was significantly and positively correlated with Aspartate and CERS6; PL was significantly and positively correlated with SPHK1 and UGCG (P < 0.05). IMF was significantly and positively correlated with PI 34:1; PI (16:0/18:1), SPHK1 and UGCG; and flesh colour yellowness b* was significantly and positively correlated with SGMS2 (P < 0.05). The above results indicate that feeding a basal diet containing 0.6% FCE can improve the meat quality of Jingyuan chicken, which provides a theoretical basis for improving the meat quality of Jingyuan chicken.

Abstract
1. This experiment investigated the efficacy of varying doses of an emulsifier blend (EB; 0 and 1 g/kg of diet), betaine (BT; 0 and 1 g/kg of diet) and L-carnitine (CT; 0 and 0.5 g/kg of diet) in broilers subjected to circular heat stress (HS) conditions. A total of 1080 one-day-old male broiler chickens (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to one of nine treatment groups (six pens/treatment with 20 birds/pen) according to a completely randomised design. The thermoneutral control broiler chickens were housed at a comfortable temperature and fed a standard diet (no additives). The other eight groups were exposed to cyclic HS conditions (34°C) for 8 h (10:00-18:00).2. There were EB × BT × CT interactions for body weight (BW) at 24 d (P = 0.038) and average daily gain (ADG) during the 10-24 d period (P = 0.049), with the greatest values found with concurrent supplementation of three supplements.3. Inclusion of EB resulted in greater (P < 0.05) BW, ADG, European performance index, uniformity rate, primary antibody titres against sheep red blood cells (SRBC), duodenal villus height (VH) and villus surface area, digestible energy (DE) and the coefficient of apparent ileal digestibility (CAID) of dry matter, crude protein, and fat However, feed conversion ratio, mortality rate and heterophile to lymphocyte ratio were lower (P < 0.05).4. Dietary BT supplementation improved (P < 0.05) all performance indicators, primary antibody titres against SRBC and Newcastle disease virus, serum total antioxidant capacity, duodenal VH, Jejunal VH/crypt depth and the CAID of dry matter and crude protein. The effect of dietary supplementation with CT was limited to an increase (P < 0.05) in ADG (d 10-24) and a decrease (P < 0.05) in serum malondialdehyde concentration (42 d) and jejunal crypt depth (42 d).5. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of either EB or BT alone or in combination ameliorated some of the detrimental effects of HS on growth performance, immunity and intestinal health in broilers, while a minor positive effect on performance and antioxidant status was observed with CT supplementation.

Abstract
The effects of emulsifier blend (EB) supplementation of diets with various levels of metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) on broiler performance, digestibility, gut morphology, and muscle fatty acid profile were investigated over a 42-d period. Diets were arranged factorially (2 × 2 × 3) and consisted of 2 levels of ME (normal [commercially recommended levels] and low [100 kcal/kg reduction in dietary ME]), 2 levels of CP and limiting amino acids (normal [commercially recommended levels] and low [95% of the normal CP level]), and 3 levels of EB supplementation (0, 1, and 2 g/kg of diet). A total of 1,200 one-day-old male broiler chickens (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to 12 treatment groups (5 pens/treatment with 20 birds/pen). Supplemental EB linearly improved (P < 0.05) final body weight, overall average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio, but the magnitude of the responses was greater in low-ME and low-CP treatments, resulting in significant ME × CP × EB interactions. Similarly, the inclusion of EB in the diet, particularly at 2 g/kg, increased the ileal digestibility of crude protein and crude fat, as well as the AMEn value (P < 0.05), but the response was greater at lower ME concentration, indicating significant ME × EB interactions. Additionally, there were CP × EB interactions (P < 0.05) for duodenal villus height and villus height/crypt depth ratio, indicating that the effect of EB on these responses was more marked at lower dietary CP levels. An increase in dietary EB levels was accompanied by a linear increase in the concentration of total saturated fatty acids and a linear decrease (P < 0.05) in the concentrations of total polyunsaturated fatty acids in both breast and thigh meat. In conclusion, the positive effects of EB supplementation, particularly at a dietary inclusion level of 2 g/kg, were clearly evident in broiler chickens fed with low nutrient diets (−100 Kcal/kg ME and/or −5% CP and limiting amino acids) in terms of growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and gut morphology.

Abstract
Context Methionine in the form of free amino acid has been widely studied in broilers challenged by heat stress (HS). However, the effects of methionine dipeptide in broilers subjected to HS are not known. Aims To evaluate the effects of methionine as free amino acid and dipeptide on the performance, oxidative status, plasma parameters and meat quality of broilers subjected to acute and chronic HS. Methods Broilers were evaluated at the following three experimental periods: 24 h of evaluation (21–22 days of age); 10 days of evaluation (22–32 days of age); and 20 days of evaluation (22–42 days of age). Broilers were divided into two groups; one group was raised in thermal comfort, and the other group was raised in continuous HS of 30°C. In both groups, animals received a diet without methionine supplementation (MD), with supplementation of methionine as free amino acid (dl-M), and with supplementation of methionine as dipeptide (dl-MM). Key results HS reduced body weight gain after 10 and 20 days of evaluation. Broilers under HS condition fed the MD diet had the highest concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) at 22 days of age and carbonylated proteins (CP) at 32 days of age. At 42 days of age, broilers fed the MD diet had higher concentrations of TBARS and CP. At 32 days of age, broilers under HS had lower high-density lipoprotein and higher low-density lipoprotein concentrations. In breast meat, broilers in thermal comfort fed the dl-M or dl-MM diets had a lower cooking loss. Broilers in HS fed the dl-M diet had the lowest cooking loss. HS reduced the pH of the meat of legs. Conclusions The acute and chronic HS affect the broiler performance in different ways. Methionine supplementation contributes to reduce the effects of HS. There were no notable differences between the supplementation of dl-M or dl-MM. Implications Productivity and the quality of the chicken meat are the most important attributes of the production. The ambient temperature can influence these parameters. The methionine in its most varied forms, due to its direct and indirect antioxidant function, has been shown to be an effective source of protection for the animal in adverse conditions such as during HS.

Abstract
Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) is the important pathogen of Newcastle Disease (ND) attacking chicken, turkey and other birds. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the effects of immune stress induced by ND vaccination and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on growth performance, antioxidant ability, and lipid metabolism of broilers. In total, 128 one-day-old broilers were randomly assigned to the following four groups and were treated as indicated: normal control (NC); vaccinated with live LaSota ND vaccine (CV); administered ND vaccine and 0.25 mg/kg body weight (BW) LPS (L-LPS); and administered ND vaccine and 0.5 mg/kg BW LPS (H-LPS). The results demonstrated that broiler feed conversion ratio (FCR) was increased in the groups CV, L-LPS and H-LPS from d 0 to 42 days compared with the group NC. The antioxidant function of broilers was decreased as indicated by the malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels in the serum of the treated groups. ND vaccination combined LPS increased the concentration of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), but decreased the concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) compared with the group NC. The reverse transcription (RT)-PCR results revealed that the mRNA expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase gene (ACC) and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A reductase (HMGR) in the liver were downregulated, whereas the mRNA expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT-1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α were upregulated compared with the group NC. These results suggest that ND vaccination combined LPS reduced broiler growth performance and antioxidant ability, whereas it activated AMPK-mediated lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Lysolecithin is an antiinflammatory emulsifier associated with improved apparent digestibility of total dietary fat and improved feed efficiency in dairy cattle. However, it is unknown if lysolecithin (LYSO) improves performance in calves. Moreover, since many conventional milk replacers use vegetable-sourced fat (e.g., palm oil), nutrient absorption and fecal score may be affected in neonatal calves. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of LYSO supplemented in milk replacer on performance, metabolites, and gut health of preweaned dairy calves. Holstein calves (n = 32) with adequate passive transfer were assigned in pairs (16 blocks) balanced by birth weight, date of birth, and sex at 1 d of age to randomly receive either LYSO (mixed in 2 milk replacer feedings at a rate of 4 g/d Lysoforte, Kemin Industries Inc., Des Moines, IA) or a milk replacer control (nothing added). Both treatments were fed 6 L/d milk replacer [22.5% crude protein, 16.2% crude fat (vegetable oil fat source) on a dry matter basis with 14% solids] by bucket in 2 daily feedings for 56 d. Calves were individually housed in wooden hutches and offered a commercial calf starter (24.6% crude protein and 13.9% neutral detergent fiber) and water by bucket ad libitum. Feed refusals and calf health was assessed daily. Weights and blood metabolites (glucose, total serum protein, albumin, creatinine, triglycerides, and cholesterol) were sampled weekly, and calves completed the study before weaning at 56 d of age. The effects of LYSO on calf average daily gain, feed efficiency, and blood metabolites were evaluated using a linear mixed model with time as a repeated measure, calf as the subject, and block as a random effect in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). The effect of LYSO to improve the odds of abnormal fecal score was evaluated using a logistic model. Supplementation of LYSO increased average daily gain (control 0.28 ± 0.03 kg; LYSO 0.37 ± 0.03 kg; least squares means ± standard error of the mean) and increased feed efficiency (gain-to-feed; control 0.25 ± 0.03; LYSO 0.32 ± 0.03). Similarly, LYSO calves had a higher final body weight at d 56 (control 52.11 ± 2.33 kg; LYSO 56.73 ± 2.33 kg). Interestingly, total dry matter intake was not associated with LYSO despite improved average daily gain (total dry matter intake control 1,088.7 ± 27.62 g; total dry matter intake LYSO 1,124.8 ± 27.62 g). Blood glucose, albumin, creatinine, triglycerides, and cholesterol were not associated with LYSO. Indeed, only total serum protein had a significant interaction with LYSO and age at wk 5 and 6. Moreover, control calves had a 13.57 (95% confidence interval: 9.25-19.90) times greater odds of having an abnormal fecal score on any given day during the diarrhea risk period from d 1 to 28. The inclusion of LYSO as an additive in milk replacer in a dose of 4 g/d may improve performance, and calf fecal score, preweaning. Further research should investigate the mechanisms behind the effects of LYSO on fat digestibility in calves fed 6 L/d of milk replacer with vegetable-sourced fat.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplemental L-ascorbic acid (AA) and folic acid (FA) on broiler chickens under heat stress (HS) conditions when supplemented either alone or in combination. For this aim, the effect of these supplements on the broilers' growth performance, some blood parameters, antioxidant, and immune status were evaluated. Hatchling Cobb-500 broilers (total = 240) were fed either corn and soybean meal-based diet (control group) or basal diet supplemented with 200 mg AA/kg diet, 1.5 mg FA/kg diet, or 200 mg AA plus 1.5 mg FA/kg diet, for 35 days during the summer months (n = 6 replicates/group, 10 birds/replicate). The minimum and maximum average temperatures ranged from 84.5 to 96.2 °F, and the relative humidity ranged from 68.5 to 76.5%. Supplemented vitamins either alone and (or) in combination increased (P < 0.01) broilers' growth performance, thyroid hormones levels, insulin growth factor1, blood hemoglobin, total protein, albumin, globulin, heat shock protein70, total antioxidant capacity, catalase enzyme activity, superoxide dismutase enzyme activity, antibody titer against Newcastle disease virus, and decreased (P < 0.01) heterophil/lymphocytes. The effects (P < 0.01) of the supplemented vitamins on the analyzed parameters were better when they were added in combination. In conclusion, the combination of AA and FA at 200 and 1.5 mg/kg, respectively, increased the broilers' antioxidant status with coordinated improvement in the growth performance and health status under HS.

Abstract
To investigate the influence of emulsifiers on broilers fed low-energy diets, the birds were distributed into three sets-the control was fed the basal diet, the second group was fed diets 50 kcal/kg less than control, and the third group was fed diets 50 kcal/kg less than control and supplemented with 500 g/ton of emulsifiers. The used mixture of exogenous emulsifiers contains phosphatidyl choline, lysophosphatidyl choline, and polyethylene glycol ricinoleate. Although the feed intake was not meaningfully affected by dietary low-energy level with emulsifier inclusion (P = 0.42), the weight gain and FCR were clearly enhanced (P = 0.005 and P = 0.044, respectively). Protein and lipids utilization were decreased by reducing energy level, but they were increased by emulsifier supplementation (P = 0.022 and P = 0.011, respectively). Liver thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARs) and muscle palmitic acid concentrations were decreased by reducing the energy level and emulsifier's supplementation (P = 0.014 and P = 0.042, respectively). However, muscle total lipids and α-tocopherol, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and α-linolenic acid were not affected by dietary treatments (P > 0.05). Interestingly, the plasma total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, total protein, and globulin were decreased in the low-energy group without emulsifier but they were increased by emulsifier supplementation (P = 0.008, P = 0.005, P = 0.037, and P = 0.005, respectively). It could be concluded that the mixture of emulsifier supplementation to low-energy diets enhanced fat utilization and resulted in positive effects on the growth performance, nutrient utilization, lipid peroxidation, and modified plasma lipid profiles in broilers. Getting such benefits in broilers is a necessity to reduce the feed cost and consequently the price of the product, which will lead to improved welfare of mankind.

Abstract
Context
Evaluating performance of broilers fed diet included feed additives in stress conditions.
Aims
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of adding lysophospholipids (LPLs) and vitamin C (VC) to diet on growth performance, blood metabolites, antioxidant capacity and carcass traits in broiler chickens reared under low ambient temperature
Methods
A total of 288 male chicks (Ross 308) were allotted to four treatments with six replicates (n = 12) when they were 1-day-old. Based on a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, four diets including dietary LPLs (0 or 1000 mg/kg) and VC (0 or 500 mg/kg) were formulated. According to the catalogue of LPL product, 100000 kcal/Kg metabolisable energy was considered for LPLs. The house temperature was 32°C during the first week and 30°C for a second week. To induce cold stress, house temperature was decreased to 14°C by the step-down temperature program during the third week and maintained between 12 and 14°C for the rest of the study.
Key results
Increased feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were observed in chickens fed the LPL-supplemented diet during the first 2 weeks, but there was no significant difference in growth performance between the birds fed LPL-supplemented diet with control during cold stress condition. Decreased feed intake and bodyweight gain were observed in chickens fed VC-supplemented diet compared with control in cold stress condition. Dietary VC decreased blood concentration of triglyceride (TG) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). Decreased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in breast muscle was observed in chickens fed VC-supplemented diet. A significant interaction between dietary LPLs and VC on relative weight and length of jejunum and ileum were detected. Comparable effects of LPLs and VC on inhibiting lipid peroxidation were observed. The free radical scavenging assay showed higher antioxidant activity of VC compared with LPLs.
Conclusions
Overall, dietary LPL supplementation did not improve broiler performance in cold stress condition, while the utilisation of 500 mg/kg VC in the ration reduced performance of broilers in low ambient temperature.
Implications
In low ambient temperature, adding 500 mg/kg VC to diet of broilers can be an effective to reduce blood concentration of TG and VLDL, with no adverse effect on FCR.
