Abstract
Cancer severely affects the health of companion animals, with neoplasia being a leading cause of death in pets. Although pets and humans share the home environment and dogs and cats can serve as sentinel species for environmental carcinogens, cancer surveillance in pets remains fragmented after decades of studies. The aim of this narrative review is to assess the evolution and current status of animal cancer registries (ACRs), highlighting historical milestones and key methodologies with a global perspective. The different types of cancer registries, their different roles and related issues in cancer surveillance are highlighted. Inconsistent diagnostic criteria, limited standardization, and lack of centralized databases hinder the comparability of results in veterinary oncology. Recent initiatives, such as the Global Initiative for Veterinary Cancer Surveillance (GIVCS) and the Veterinary Cancer Guidelines and Protocols (VCGP), seek to standardize cancer reporting and coding systems and promote a One Health approach that links veterinary and human oncology research. Increased standardization and data sharing between databases is critical to advancing cancer surveillance in companion animals, benefiting both veterinary and public health.

Abstract
Lymphoma is the most common haematopoietic cancer in cats with few large studies evaluating breed and sex as risk factors for the disease. Australia's geographic isolation and quarantine rules have led to a potentially restricted genetic pool and, currently, there have not been any large local epidemiological studies reported. A total of 1705 lymphoma cases were identified from several sources and compared to a reference population of 85,741 cats, and represent cats that are presented to veterinary clinics. Odds ratios were calculated for each breed that included lymphoma cases, as well as sex, retroviral status, and immunophenotype. The distributions of age and weight in the lymphoma and control populations and proportions of lymphoma cases in anatomic locations were compared. Eight breeds were identified as displaying increased potential risk of lymphoma and three at decreased risk. Male cats were found to be at increased risk (OR 1.2, 95%CI: 1.1 to 1.3, p = 0.002). The lymphoma cases were older, with a median age of 11.7 years compared to 9.0 years (p < 0.0001), and weighed less, with a median weight of 3.7 kg compared to 4.0 kg (p = 0.010), than the control population. Several breeds were found to have significant variations in the proportions of anatomical presentations including the Siamese, Burmilla, Australian mist, ragdoll, British shorthair, and domestic cats. These findings require confirmation in future studies that address the limitations of this study, as outlined in the discussion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate and report response to treatment with a 10-week maintenance-free COP (COP-10) protocol in a cohort of 27 cats with intermediate or large cell lymphoma. Additionally, to identify any potential prognostic factors for predicting the treatment response. MATERIALS AND METHODS The medical records of cats diagnosed with intermediate or large cell lymphoma in a single institution in the period 2014 to 2023 and treated with COP-10 as first-line treatment were reviewed. RESULTS Twenty-seven cats were included in the study. The median age was 10 years, 67% of the cats were in stages I to II and the most common anatomical location was alimentary (37%). The overall response rate was 65%, with 38% of cats achieving complete remission and 27% partial remission. For cats achieving complete remission, the median progression-free interval and the median lymphoma-specific survival time were both 1,139 days. For cats in partial remission, the median progression-free interval and the median lymphoma-specific survival time were 53 and 210 days, respectively. Clinical stage was significantly related to treatment response and survival time. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Treatment with the short protocol COP-10 resulted in remission rates and durable first remissions for cats achieving complete remission comparable to responses seen with longer-duration chemotherapy protocols. The results from this study may impact economic and logistic decisions for owners, as well as the quality of life for patients in the future.

Abstract
Feline lymphoma, a prevalent cancer in cats, exhibits varied prognoses influenced by anatomical site and cellular characteristics. In this study, we investigated the utility of flow cytometry and clonality analysis via PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement (PARR) with respect to characterizing the disease and predicting prognosis. For this purpose, we received fine needle aspirates and/or blood from 438 feline patients, which were subjected to flow cytometry analysis and PARR. We used a subset of the results from patients with confirmed B- or T-cell lymphomas for comparison to cytological or histological evaluation (n = 53). Using them as a training set, we identified the optimal set of flow cytometry parameters, namely forward scatter thresholds, for cell size categorization by correlating with cytology-defined sizes. Concordance with cytological sizing among this training set was 82%. Furthermore, 90% concordance was observed when the proposed cell sizing was tested on an independent test set (n = 24), underscoring the reliability of the proposed approach. Additionally, lymphoma subtypes defined by flow cytometry and PARR demonstrated significant survival differences, validating the prognostic utility of these methods. The proposed methodology achieves high concordance with cytological evaluations and provides an additional tool for the characterization and management of feline lymphoproliferative diseases.

Abstract
Specific data regarding outcome of cats with high-grade and large granular lymphocyte alimentary lymphoma (HGAL and LGL, respectively) treated with multi-agent chemotherapy are scarce. The aims of this multi-centric, retrospective study were to describe the outcome of cats with HGAL and LGL treated with COP- or CHOP-based chemotherapy and to identify potential prognostic factors. Cats with a cytological or histological diagnosis of HGAL or LGL lymphoma treated with COP- or CHOP-based protocol as first-line chemotherapy were included. Data regarding diagnosis, staging, treatment and follow-up were collected. Fifty-seven cats treated with CHOP (n = 37) or COP (n = 20) protocols were included. Complete response (CR), partial response (PR), stable disease (SD) and progressive disease (PD) were observed in 20%, 22%, 36% and 22% of cats, respectively, for an overall response rate of 42%. Median progression-free interval (PFI) was 148 days and overall median survival time (OST) was 131 days. Cats achieving CR, PR or SD showed significantly longer PFI (p < .01) and OST (p < .015) compared with cats with PD. Other positive prognostic factors in multi-variate analysis were rescue treatment (p < .001) and absence of lymph node involvement (p < .03). Negative prognostic factors were diffuse infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract (p = .035) and infiltration of a non-haematopoietic organ (p < .01).

Abstract
This study aimed to characterize and describe the different lymphoma types and anatomical forms in cats in Hong Kong. The clinical and histopathological data of cats diagnosed with lymphoma by cytology and/or histopathology were collected from a large diagnostic laboratory in Hong Kong. In total, 444 cats were diagnosed with lymphoma over four years (2019-2022). Like other countries where there is a low prevalence of FeLV infection, the predominant form of lymphoma was gastrointestinal (abdominal). Nasopharyngeal and peripheral nodal lymphoma were the second and third most common forms of lymphoma. The large cell/high-grade lymphoma type was much more common than the low-grade/small cell lymphoma in the study population. Domestic short hair was the most commonly affected breed in our study (n = 259/444). Among the cats with identified T/B-cell status, B-cell lymphoma (n = 61/81) prevailed as the most common phenotype. This study describes and characterizes the different types of feline lymphoma in cats in Hong Kong, adding valuable information to the body of knowledge.

Abstract
The effect of the semi-quantitative expression of CD20 in the prognosis of feline nasal lymphoma has not been described. This study investigated the prognostic significance of CD20 expression, clinicopathological characterization, and treatment outcomes in cats with nasal lymphoma. Clinical data from cats diagnosed with nasal lymphoma were retrospectively collected, including signalment, clinical signs, clinicopathological variables, treatment outcomes, and survival times. Using ImageJ software, CD20 expression was semi-quantitatively measured based on the proportion of CD20-positive areas. Correlations between laboratory findings, immunohistochemical expressions, and survival outcomes were investigated. All cats included in the study exhibited the B-cell immunophenotype. During treatment, a reduction in PCV was noted in the cats at the second and sixth weeks (p = 0.01 and p = 0.01, respectively). The cats with low CD20 expression exhibited a significantly shorter MST (91 days; 95% CI, 41-141) than those with high CD20 expression (MST, 214 days; 95% CI, 76-351) (p = 0.01). Stage T1 cats displayed a higher MST (143 days; 95% CI, 144-172) than those in other stages > T1 (120 days, 95% CI, 71-169 days) (p = 0.04). Anemia, a common adverse effect in feline nasal lymphoma, did not impact MST. T1 clinical staging and high CD20 expression showed a trend for better MST.

Abstract
Domestic cat hepadnavirus (DCH), a relative hepatitis B virus (HBV) in human, has been recently identified in cats; however, association of DCH infection with lymphoma in cats is not investigated. To determine the association between DCH infection and feline lymphoma, seven hundred and seventeen cats included 131 cats with lymphoma (68 blood and 63 tumor samples) and 586 (526 blood and 60 lymph node samples) cats without lymphoma. DCH DNA was investigated in blood and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The FFPE lymphoma tissues were immunohistochemically subtyped, and the localization of DCH in lymphoma sections was investigated using in situ hybridization (ISH). Feline retroviral infection was investigated in the DCH-positive cases. DCH DNA was detected in 16.18% (11/68) (p = 0.002; odds ratio [OR], 5.15; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.33-11.36) of blood and 9.52% (6/63) (p = 0.028; OR, 13.68; 95% CI, 0.75-248.36) of neoplastic samples obtained from lymphoma cats, whereas only 3.61% (19/526) of blood obtained from non-lymphoma cats was positive for DCH detection. Within the DCH-positive lymphoma, in 3/6 cats, feline leukemia virus was co-detected, and in 6/6 were B-cell lymphoma (p > 0.9; OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 0.09-37.89) and were multicentric form (p = 0.008; OR, 1.327; 95% CI, 0.06-31.18). DCH was found in the CD79-positive pleomorphic cells. Cats with lymphoma were more likely to be positive for DCH than cats without lymphoma, and infection associated with lymphoma development needs further investigations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to describe the clinical presentation, tumour characteristics, responses to chemotherapy protocols and toxicity in a cohort of cats with lymphoma up to 18 months of age. In addition, the probability of long-term (>2 years) survival was explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS The medical records of client-owned cats aged up to 18 months diagnosed with lymphoma between 2008 and 2022 at five UK-based veterinary referral hospitals were reviewed. RESULTS Thirty-three cats were included. The most common anatomical forms were mediastinal (42%), disseminated disease (30%) and renal (15%), with all cats having intermediate to large cell lymphoma. Three out of 29 cats tested were positive for FeLV but none for FIV. Twenty-six cats were treated with multi-agent chemotherapy protocols with complete and partial responses seen in 46% and 50% of cats, respectively. For this group, median progression-free survival was 133 days (95% confidence interval [Cl] 67 to 199) and median survival time was 268 days (95% Cl 106 to 430). Complete response to chemotherapy was associated with a longer progression-free survival. Seven cats were considered long-term survivors (>2 years). Chemotherapy was generally well tolerated with none of the long-term survivors suffering from chronic sequelae from cytotoxic treatment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Paediatric and juvenile cats with lymphoma showed a high response rate to multi-agent chemotherapy protocols with rare significant toxicities. The presence of long-term survivors may suggest a more favourable outcome in a subset of patients.

Abstract
Feline lymphoma is currently less commonly associated with retrovirus infections as the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). This is thought to have caused a shift in the distribution of anatomical subtypes and eventually have led to poorer treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether this change was also notable in the Netherlands, a country historically known for its low prevalence of FeLV and FIV, and to determine its consequences on treatment response. A 10-year cohort of 174 cats with large cell lymphoma (110 treated) were included and compared to historical data from previously published reports in the Netherlands. Of the 90 cats screened, only one tested positive for FeLV and three for FIV. The most current cohort had an increased age (median 8.7 years) and fever Siamese cats (6.3%) compared to previous reports, with alimentary (24.5%) and nasopharyngeal lymphoma (22.7%) being the most common subtypes. Sixty-six of the one hundred and ten cats (60%) went into complete remission, (CR) resulting in a median disease-free period (DFP) of 763 days, with nasopharyngeal and mediastinal having the longest DFP. The median overall survival time was 274 days with an estimated 1-year survival of 41.3% and a 2-year survival of 34.6%, respectively. Patient characteristics of cats with malignant lymphoma in the Netherlands have changed over the years, but this cannot be explained by differences in FeLV/FIV prevalence. Although the overall response rate to therapy did not change over time, for some lymphoma subtypes, longer DFPs were observed compared to 30 years ago.

Abstract
Hepatic lymphoma is poorly characterized in cats and differentiating between inflammation and lymphomas is often difficult. The diagnosis of hepatic lymphoma in humans relies on recognition of specific patterns of lymphocytic infiltrates and clonality testing of antigen receptors. Herein, we defined similar patterns of lymphocytic infiltrates in hepatic biopsies of cats and correlated them with clonality to determine which patterns are predictive of lymphoma. A retrospective study was performed on surgical biopsies from 44 cats. The immunophenotype was characterized using CD3 and CD20 on all 44 samples. All 44 samples were tested using PCR for T-cell receptor gamma-gene rearrangements. PCR for immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangements was performed on 24 of these cats. Four patterns of lymphocytic infiltrates were characterized: (1) tightly periportal, (2) periportal and centrilobular, (3) nodular, and (4) periportal with sinusoidal extension. Other histomorphologic features (fibrosis, biliary hyperplasia, bile ductopenia, bile duct targeting, hepatic hematopoiesis, lipogranulomas, lymphonodular aggregates, other inflammatory cells) were also evaluated. The sensitivity and specificity of the lymphocytic patterns to diagnose lymphomas were determined using Bayesian Hui-Walter analysis (BLCM) against clonality results. Lymphocytic patterns 2, 3, and 4 accurately diagnosed hepatic lymphomas with a sensitivity and specificity of 82% (CI 95%: 0.65, 0.96) and 77% (CI 95%: 0.54, 1.00), respectively. None of the other microscopic features evaluated were predictive of a lymphoma or inflammation. Our study identified specific patterns of lymphocytic infiltration that differentiate feline hepatic lymphoma from inflammation while other histologic features were not associated with an accurate diagnosis.

Abstract
There are few recent and methodologically robust life expectancy (LE) tables for dogs or cats. This study aimed to generate LE tables for these species with clinical records from >1,000 Banfield Pet hospitals in the USA. Using Sullivan's method, LE tables were generated across survey years 2013-2019, by survey year, and for subpopulations defined by sex, adult body size group (purebred dogs only: toy, small, medium, large and giant), and median body condition score (BCS) over life. The deceased population for each survey year comprised animals with a recorded date of death in that year; survivors had no death date in that year and were confirmed living by a veterinary visit in a subsequent year. The dataset totaled 13,292,929 unique dogs and 2,390,078 unique cats. LE at birth (LEbirth) was 12.69 years (95% CI: 12.68-12.70) for all dogs, 12.71 years (12.67-12.76) for mixed-breed dogs, 11.18 years (11.16-11.20) for cats, and 11.12 (11.09-11.14) for mixed-breed cats. LEbirth increased with decreasing dog size group and increasing survey year 2013 to 2018 for all dog size groups and cats. Female dogs and cats had significantly higher LEbirth than males: 12.76 years (12.75-12.77) vs. 12.63 years (12.62-12.64), and 11.68 years (11.65-11.71) vs. 10.72 years (10.68-10.75), respectively. Obese dogs (BCS 5/5) had a significantly lower LEbirth [11.71 years (11.66-11.77)] than overweight dogs (BCS 4/5) [13.14 years (13.12-13.16)] and dogs with ideal BCS 3/5 [13.18 years (13.16-13.19)]. The LEbirth of cats with BCS 4/5 [13.67 years (13.62-13.71)] was significantly higher than cats with BCS 5/5 [12.56 years (12.45-12.66)] or BCS 3/5 [12.18 years (12.14-12.21)]. These LE tables provide valuable information for veterinarians and pet owners and a foundation for research hypotheses, as well as being a stepping-stone to disease-associated LE tables.

Abstract
70-weeks-old female C57BL6 senescence marker protein 30 knock out mice exhibited anorexia, lethargy and enlarged abdomen because of an intraperitoneal mass. On necropsy, the mouse revealed a large brown-whitish mass located on the mesentery. The mass also exhibited systemic metastasis and spread over in various organs. On microscopic findings, the neoplastic masses were mainly composed of neoplastic round cells characterized by severe anisokaryosis, narrow cytoplasm, round nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and numerous mitotic figures (13-15 in a 400X field). Consequently, the present case was diagnosed as a metastatic lymphoma arising from a mesenteric lymph node, the tumor spread to other organs such as the intestine, kidney and thoracic cavity. According to previous studies, SMP30 plays an important role in inhibiting cancer in both human and mouse. Taken together, it seems that the present case can be used as a valuable asset for evaluating the potential risks of SMP30 depletion in developing lymphoma.

Abstract
This multicentric retrospective study describes the clinical and MRI features and pathological studies of spinal lymphoma in 27 cats. MRI characteristics and their possible correlations with histopathological findings were studied. The most frequent neurological signs were rapidly progressive paraparesis (62.9%) or paraplegia (22.2%). Bimodal age distribution was found with 40.7% of cats aged ≤2.5 years (63.6% of them FeLV positive), and 44.4% of cats aged ≥8 years (16.7% of them FeLV positive). Spinal lymphoma was generally presented on MRI as an ill-defined epidural focal lesion with moderate to severe spinal cord compression, expanding more than one vertebral body. MRI lesions were typically localized in the lumbar vertebral segment (p = 0.01), circumferential to the spinal cord (p = 0.04), hyperintense on T2-weighted sequences (p = 4.3e-06), and isointense on T1-weighted sequences (p = 8.9e-07). The degree and pattern of contrast enhancement were variable. Other morphological patterns included paravertebral masses with extension into the vertebral canal and lesions centered in the spinal nerve roots. Involvement of vertebrae and adjacent spinal soft tissues was present in 74% of cases when present vertebral involvement was characterized by cortical sparing. When follow-up MRI studies (n = 4) were performed after treatment new lesions of similar nature but different localizations and extension were observed. Confirmation of spinal lymphoma was performed by CSF analysis in 4/27 (14.8%) of cases, by FNA in 6/27 (22.2%) of cases, by surgical biopsy in 10/27 (37%) of cases, by FNA and surgical biopsy in 1/27 (3.7%) of cases, by CSF, FNA, surgical biopsy and postmorten examination in 1/27 (3.7%) of cases, and postmorten studies in 5/27 (18.5%) of cases. Antemortem diagnosis was achieved in 22/27 (81.5%) cats. The presence of necrosis in histopathological studies as an unfavorable prognostic indicator of survival was significantly more probable when lesions were not hyperintense on T2-weighted sequences (p = 0.017). Spinal lymphoma in cats is a complex entity with heterogeneous imaging and histopathological appearance. However, certain MRI features may support a tentative diagnosis, which in a group of cases can be confirmed when combined with the CSF findings. For the rest of the cases, tissue sampling assisted by imaging findings remains necessary for definitive diagnosis.

Abstract
Background Hypothyroidism is a commonly diagnosed endocrinopathy in dogs. This study aimed to investigate the frequency and risk factors for diagnosis of hypothyroidism in UK primary-care practice. Dogs diagnosed with hypothyroidism were identified by searching electronic patient records of primary-care practices participating in VetCompass. A cohort study design estimated one-year (2016) period prevalence and incidence risk for hypothyroidism. Multivariable binary logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations between demographic risk factors and hypothyroidism. Results From 905,553 dogs, 2,105 dogs were recorded with diagnosed hypothyroidism in 2016; 359 incident and 1,746 pre-existing, giving an annual prevalence of 0.23% (95% CI 0.22–0.24) and annual incidence risk of 0.04% (95% CI 0.04–0.04). Multivariable logistic regression identified 24 predisposed and nine protected breeds. Standard Doberman pinscher (odds ratio [OR] = 17.02, 95% CI 12.8–22.64), Tibetan terrier (11.25, 95% CI 8.27–15.32) and boxer (10.44, 95% CI 8.66–12.58) breeds showed high predisposition. Pug (OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.09–0.89), Yorkshire terrier (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.24–0.59), Shih-tzu (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.23–0.64) and Jack Russell terrier (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.29–0.54) were the most protected breeds. Overall, being a purebred dog, being insured, having bodyweight above the breed-sex mean, increasing age, being neutered and rising adult bodyweight also showed increased odds being a dog living with a diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Conclusions Several strong breed predispositions for diagnosis of hypothyroidism were identified that can assist with disorder prioritisation in ongoing efforts to improve breed health. Other risk factors were also identified that can assist veterinary surgeons during clinical work-up of suspected cases. Identification of novel evidence for protected breeds provides useful information for research into genetic mechanisms.

Abstract
In recent years, growing attention has been paid to the influence/role of infectious diseases in tumour development and progression. Investigations have demonstrated that some infectious organisms can have a direct role in the development of neoplasia, whereas others can predispose to neoplasia by alterations in the immune response, or by creating a pro-inflammatory environment. Feline leukaemia virus was one of the first infectious agents recognised as an oncogenic organism, and along with feline immunodeficiency virus has received the most attention. Since the discovery of this retrovirus, several other organisms have been associated with neoplastic processes in cats, these include gammaherpes virus, mouse mammary tumour virus, papillomaviruses, hepadnavirus, Helicobacter species, and the parasitic infections Platynosomum fastosum and Opisthorchis viverrini. This review summarises the findings to date.

Effectiveness and Adverse Events of Cyclophosphamide, Vincristine, and Prednisolone Chemotherapy in Feline Mediastinal Lymphoma Naturally Infected with Feline Leukemia Virus. Abstract
Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection is considered a poor prognostic factor for feline lymphoma. This study investigated the prevalence of cats suffering from feline lymphoma with natural infection of the feline leukemia virus, as well as clinical signs, adverse events, and survival time after cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisolone (COP) chemotherapy. This retrospective study involved 92 cats diagnosed with mediastinal or mediastinal plus other anatomical sites of lymphoma and treated with COP chemotherapy. FeLV-antigen-positive was observed in all cats. Clinical signs and adverse events were observed after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd inductions. Clinical signs improved after the 3rd induction of COP chemotherapy. The response rate was 96.74% (81.52% complete response, 15.22% partial response, and 3.26% no response). The overall median survival time was 338 days (range 62−1057 days). The overall response rate and median survival time of cats with feline lymphoma that were FeLV-antigen-positive and treated with COP chemotherapy were higher than from other studies. This study found that cats aged <4 years survived longer than those aged at least 4 years. Anemia (before COP), azotemia (after 2nd induction), and elevated alanine aminotransferase (after 1st induction) were associated with an increased chance of mortality.
