Abstract
BACKGROUND Health workers (HWs) faced considerable psychosocial hazards during the COVID-19 pandemic, which profoundly affected their occupational health and job performance. The potential indirect relationship between workplace violence (WPV) and burnout among HWs needs to be further explored. The purpose of this study is to examine the chain mediating effects of sleep disturbance and work ability in the relationship between WPV and burnout among HWs. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in a secondary hospital two years after the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, China. A sample of 571 HWs was recruited using a cluster sampling method, achieving a response rate of 80.06%. Participants completed self-report questionnaires that included demographic information and measures of WPV, burnout, sleep disturbance, and work ability. RESULTS The prevalence rates of burnout and WPV among HWs two years after the COVID-19 outbreak were 37.30% and 31.52%, respectively. WPV was significantly associated with burnout (β = 0.446, p < 0.001). Sleep disturbance was identified as a mediator in the relationship between WPV and burnout (β = 0.063, 95% CI: 0.027-0.105), accounting for 14.13% of the total effect. Similarly, work ability also played a mediating role in this relationship (β = 0.142, 95% CI: 0.065-0.225), accounting for 31.84%. Additionally, both sleep disturbance and work ability exhibited a chain mediation effect on the association between WPV and burnout (β = 0.020, 95% CI: 0.008-0.036), and the total indirect effect accounted for 50.67%. CONCLUSIONS Among Chinese HWs, WPV exerts significant direct and indirect effects on burnout symptoms, mediated by sleep disturbance and work ability. This finding provides valuable empirical insights for designing interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of psychosocial factors such as WPV and burnout among HWs. After exposure to WPV, measures focused on reducing sleep disturbance and enhancing work ability may prove effective in alleviating burnout in subsequent interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies of sleep and prostate cancer are almost entirely based on self-report, with limited research using actigraphy. Our goal was to evaluate actigraphy-measured sleep and prostate cancer and to expand on findings from prior studies of self-reported sleep. METHODS We prospectively examined 34 260 men without a history of prostate cancer in the UK Biobank. Sleep characteristics were measured over 7 days using actigraphy. We calculated sleep duration, onset, midpoint, wake-up time, social jetlag (difference in weekend-weekday sleep midpoints), sleep efficiency (percentage of time spent asleep between onset and wake-up time), and wakefulness after sleep onset. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate covariate-adjusted hazards ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Over 7.6 years, 1152 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer. Sleep duration was not associated with prostate cancer risk. Sleep midpoint earlier than 4:00 am was not associated with prostate cancer risk, though sleep midpoint of 5:00 am or later was suggestively associated with lower prostate cancer risk but had limited precision (earlier than 4:00 am vs 4:00-4:59 am HR = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.87 to 1.16; 5:00 am or later vs 4:00-4:59 am HR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.57 to 1.10). Social jetlag was not associated with greater prostate cancer risk (1 to <2 hours vs <1 hour HR = 1.06, 95% CI = 0.89 to 1.25; ≥2 hours vs <1 hour HR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.65 to 1.26). Compared with men who averaged less than 30 minutes of wakefulness after sleep onset per day, men with 60 minutes or more had a higher risk of prostate cancer (HR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.00 to 1.43). CONCLUSIONS Of the sleep characteristics studied, higher wakefulness after sleep onset-a measure of poor sleep quality-was associated with greater prostate cancer risk. Replication of our findings between wakefulness after sleep onset and prostate cancer are warranted.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep disruption affects biological processes that facilitate carcinogenesis. This retrospective cohort study used de-identified data from the Veterans Administration (VA) electronic medical record system to test the hypothesis that patients with diagnosed sleep disorders had an increased risk of prostate, breast, colorectal, or other cancers (1999-2010, N=663,869). This study builds upon existing evidence by examining whether patients with more severe or longer-duration diagnoses were at a greater risk of these cancers relative to those with a less severe or shorter duration sleep disorder. Methods Incident cancer cases were identified in the VA Tumor Registry and sleep disorders were defined by International Classification of Sleep Disorder codes. Analyses were performed using extended Cox regression with sleep disorder diagnosis as a time-varying covariate. Results Sleep disorders were present among 56,055 eligible patients (8% of the study population); sleep apnea (46%) and insomnia (40%) were the most common diagnoses. There were 18,181 cancer diagnoses (41% prostate, 12% colorectal, 1% female breast, 46% other). The hazard ratio (HR) for a cancer diagnosis was 1.45 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.37, 1.54) among those with any sleep disorder, after adjustment for age, sex, state of residence, and marital status. Risks increased with increasing sleep disorder duration (short [<1-2 years] HR: 1.04 [CI: 1.03-1.06], medium [>2-5 years] 1.23 [1.16-1.32]; long [>5-12 years] 1.52 [1.34-1.73]). Risks also increased with increasing sleep disorder severity using cumulative sleep disorder treatments as a surrogate exposure; African Americans with more severe disorders had greater risks relative to those with fewer treatments and other race groups. Results among patients with only sleep apnea, insomnia, or another sleep disorder were similar to those for all sleep disorders combined. Discussion The findings are consistent with other studies indicating that sleep disruption is a cancer risk factor. Optimal sleep and appropriate sleep disorder management are modifiable risk factors that may facilitate cancer prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of sleep on the occurrence of prostate cancer (PCa) remains unclear. This study explored the influence of sleep traits on the incidence of PCa using a UK Biobank cohort study. METHODS In this prospective cohort study, 213,999 individuals free of PCa at recruitment from UK Biobank were included. Missing data were imputed using multiple imputation by chained equations. Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate the adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for PCa (6747 incident cases) across seven sleep traits (sleep duration, chronotype, insomnia, snoring, nap, difficulty to get up in the morning, and daytime sleepiness). In addition, we newly created a healthy sleep quality score according to sleep traits to assess the impact of the overall status of night and daytime sleep on PCa development. E values were used to assess unmeasured confounding. RESULTS We identified 6747 incident cases, of which 344 died from PCa. Participants who usually suffered from insomnia had a higher risk of PCa (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04-1.19, E value: 1.46). Finding it fairly easy to get up in the morning was also positively associated with PCa (HR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.04-1.15, E value: 1.40). Usually having a nap was associated with a lower risk of PCa (HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.83-0.99, E value: 1.42). CONCLUSIONS Fairly easy to get up in the morning and usually experiencing insomnia were associated with an increased incidence of PCa. Moreover, usually having a nap was associated with a lower risk of PCa. Therefore, sleep behaviors are modifiable risk factors that may have a potential impact on PCa risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems (SP) can indicate underlying sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, which may adversely impact cancer risk and mortality. METHODS We assessed the association of baseline and longitudinal sleep apnea and insomnia symptoms with incident cancer (N = 3930) and cancer mortality (N = 4580) in the Cardiovascular Health Study. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to calculate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to evaluate the associations. RESULTS Overall, 885 incident cancers and 804 cancer deaths were identified over a median follow-up of 12 and 14 years, respectively. Compared to participants who reported no sleep apnea symptoms, the risk of incident cancer was inversely associated [(HR (95%CI)] with snoring [0.84 (0.71, 0.99)]. We noted an elevated prostate cancer incidence for apnea [2.34 (1.32, 4.15)] and snoring [1.69 (1.11, 2.57)]. We also noted an elevated HR for lymphatic or hematopoietic cancers [daytime sleepiness: 1.81 (1.06, 3.08)]. We found an inverse relationship for cancer mortality with respect to snoring [0.73 (0.62, 0.8)] and apnea [(0.69 (0.51, 0.94))]. We noted a significant inverse relationship between difficulty falling asleep and colorectal cancer death [0.32 (0.15, 0.69)] and snoring with lung cancer death [0.56 (0.35, 0.89)]. CONCLUSIONS The relationship between SP and cancer risk and mortality was heterogeneous. Larger prospective studies addressing more cancer sites, molecular type-specific associations, and better longitudinal SP assessments are needed for improved delineation of SP-cancer risk dyad.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to examine the link between psychological, behavioral, and social factors and survival in patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer. METHODS A cohort of gastrointestinal cancer patients were administered a battery of questionnaires that assessed trauma, depression, social support, sleep, diet, exercise, quality of life, tobacco and alcohol use, pain, and fatigue. Analyses included Pearson's correlations, analyses of variance, Kaplan Meier survival, and Cox regression analyses. RESULTS Of the 568 patients, the majority were male (57.9%) and Caucasian (91.9%), with a mean age of 61 (S.D. = 10.7). The level of perceived social support was comparable to patients with other medical conditions. Sociodemographic predictors of social support included the number of years of education (r = 0.109, p = 0.05), marital status (F(6,387) = 5.465, p ≤ 0.001), and whether the patients' income met the family's basic needs (F(1,377) = 25.531, p < 0.001). Univariate analyses revealed that older age (p < 0.001), male gender (p = 0.007), being black (p = 0.005), diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (p = 0.046), higher body mass index (p = 0.022), larger tumor size (p = 0.032), initial treatment including chemotherapy rather than surgery (p < 0.001), and lower level of perceived social support (p = 0.037) were associated with poorer survival. Using multivariate Cox regression and adjusting for all factors found to be significant in univariate survival analyses, older age (p = 0.024) and lower perceived social support (HR = 0.441, 95% CI = 0.233, 0.833; p = 0.012) were the factors that remained significantly associated with poorer survival. CONCLUSION There are several biological and psychosocial factors that predict cancer mortality. Social support appears to be a robust factor affecting mortality in gastrointestinal cancer patients.

Abstract
A bidirectional connection between sleep and cancer exists; however, the specific associations between individual sleep disorders and particular tumors are not very clear. An accurate assessment of sleep disorders in cancer patients is necessary to improve patient health, survival, response to therapy, quality of life, reduction of comorbidities/complications. Indeed, recent scientific evidence shows that knowledge and management of sleep disorders offer interesting therapeutic perspectives for the treatment of cancer. In light of this need, the objective of this review is to assess the evidence highlighted in the research of the last ten years on the correlation between each specific category of sleep disorder according to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders 3rd Ed. and several types of tumor based on their anatomical location (head-neck, including the brain and thyroid; lung; breast; ovary; endometrium; testes; prostate; bladder; kidney; gastrointestinal tract, subdivided into: stomach, liver, colon, pancreas; skin; bone tumors; hematological malignancies: leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, polycythemia), in order to evaluate what is currently known about: 1) sleep disorders as cancer risk factor; 2) tumors associated with the onset of sleep disorders; 3) targeted therapies of sleep disorders in cancer patients and new oncological perspectives following the evaluation of sleep.

Self-reported difficulty initiating sleep and early morning awakenings are associated with nocturnal diastolic non-dipping in older white Swedish men. Sci Rep 2020; 10:13355. Abstract
Chronically blunted nocturnal blood pressure (BP) dipping has been shown to increase the future risk of cardiovascular diseases. In the present cross-sectional study, we investigated whether self-reported insomnia symptoms were associated with an altered 24-h BP profile and blunted nocturnal BP dipping (night-to-day BP ratio > 0.90) in older men. For the analysis, we used 24-h ambulatory blood pressure data and reports of insomnia symptoms (difficulty initiating sleep, DIS; and early morning awakenings, EMA) from 995 Swedish men (mean age: 71 years). Compared to men without DIS, those reporting DIS (10% of the cohort) had a higher odds ratio of diastolic non-dipping (1.85 [1.15, 2.98], P = 0.011). Similarly, men who reported EMA (19% of the cohort) had a higher odds ratio of diastolic non-dipping than those without EMA (1.57 [1.09, 2.26], P = 0.015). Despite a slightly higher nocturnal diastolic BP among men with EMA vs. those without EMA (+ 1.4 mmHg, P = 0.042), no other statistically significant differences in BP and heart rate were found between men with and those without insomnia symptoms. Our findings suggest that older men reporting difficulty initiating sleep or early morning awakenings may have a higher risk of nocturnal diastolic non-dipping. Our findings must be replicated in larger cohorts that also include women.
