Abstract
AIM To evaluate agreement with the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) complementary feeding guidelines in a multiethnic community in Lisbon and to identify factors influencing complementary feeding practices among immigrant families. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to March 2022 among caretakers of children aged 6 to 36 months at a primary healthcare facility in Lisbon, Portugal. A questionnaire collected data on demographics, socioeconomic status, complementary feeding practices, and sources of complementary feeding information. Agreement with ESPGHAN guidelines was assessed, and statistical analyses identified associations between complementary feeding inadequacies and socio-demographic variables. RESULTS Among 136 participants, 69% were immigrants. The prevalence of complementary feeding inadequacies was 53%, with early introduction of salt (28%) and tea (19%), and delayed introduction of gluten (15%) being the most frequent. Immigrant families exhibited higher rates of inadequacies. Healthcare professionals (71%) and family advice (13%) were the primary sources of complementary feeding information. CONCLUSION Adherence to ESPGHAN complementary feeding guidelines was suboptimal, particularly among immigrant families. Tailored healthcare interventions that consider cultural and socioeconomic factors are necessary to enhance the complementary feeding practices. Further research is needed to monitor these practices and evaluate the effectiveness of culturally sensitive healthcare policies.

Abstract
Breastfeeding is associated with many health benefits, while its prevalence is determined by numerous factors, including socioeconomic status (SES). SES is the position of an individual on the socioeconomic scale, using occupation, education, income, place of residence, and wealth as key indicators. Since its interrelationship with health is complex, world region-specific insights into the relevant socioeconomic inequalities impacting breastfeeding practices are crucial to effectively address these. The purpose of this systematic review is, therefore, to explore SES indicators affecting breastfeeding initiation and duration in two different United Nations-defined regions, Western Europe and Southern Africa to assess (dis)similarities, as these can guide region-specific, targeted interventions to improve practices. A systematic literature search was conducted across seven databases, of which 47 articles were included. The risk of bias was assessed, and outcome data related to SES as well as breastfeeding initiation and duration were collected. Higher education consistently leads to better breastfeeding initiation outcomes, but economic constraints and employment in informal sectors hinder breastfeeding practices in Southern Africa. In Western Europe, supportive working conditions and a migration background have a positive impact, while employment status and income show rather mixed effects. Community, regional, and religious factors play significant, ambiguous roles. In South Africa, food insecurity, the living environment, and geographic location complicate breastfeeding. This systematic review highlights the significant influence of SES on breastfeeding initiation and duration in Western Europe and Southern Africa, while the specific factors indeed vary between both regions. This systematic review therefore illustrates the relevance of region-specific SES factors, impacting breastfeeding practices. Addressing these barriers with region-specific, targeted approaches may result in substantial progress toward achieving global breastfeeding goals. Registration: PROSPERO (CRD42023473433).

Abstract
Understanding the early origins of Eating in the Absence of Hunger (EAH) is crucial, as maladaptive appetite regulation contributes to excessive weight gain in childhood. This cross-sectional study primarily investigated in toddlers the associations between EAH and parental feeding practices (PFP), focusing on instrumental feeding. It also explored the associations with children's temperament or food accessibility, and their potential moderating effects on the relationship between EAH and PFP. Sixty-six parents and toddlers aged 24-36 months participated. EAH (kcal) was assessed using Fisher and Birch's (1999) lab-based paradigm. PFP, children's general temperament and appetitive traits, and food accessibility were parent-reported. Children's weight and height were measured to calculate their BMI z-score. Linear regressions analyzed associations between EAH and PFP, adjusted or not for children's or parents' characteristics. Interactions assessed the moderating effects of temperament or food accessibility. Toddlers' EAH (43 ± 41 kcal) was unrelated to instrumental feeding, namely using food as a reward (r = -0.08, p = 0.76) and to regulate emotions (r = 0.04, p = 0.76), which were rarely applied by parents. EAH was not associated with children's temperament or food accessibility, but exploratory analyses revealed a positive association with parental restriction for health reasons (RFH, r = 0.30, p = 0.01), especially at high and moderate levels of Ease of access to food (RFH x Ease of access interaction: β = 12.2, p = 0.01). Soothability did not moderate the relationship between EAH and PFP. In conclusion, toddler's EAH was not associated with instrumental feeding but correlated positively with health-related restriction. This was moderated by food accessibility, suggesting that limiting food accessibility in early childhood may mitigate this adverse relationship. Abstract
BACKGROUND While complementary feeding can be challenging, little emphasis has been placed on the introduction to food texture/pieces, especially in terms of neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study aims to determine the association between the timing of introduction to food pieces during infancy and neurodevelopment in early childhood. We hypothesized that late introduction to food texture/pieces relates to unfavorable neurodevelopmental outcomes. METHODS Families (n = 18329) were recruited from the general population during the nationwide ELFE (Étude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance) birth cohort in France, and 8511 were selected for a complete case analysis. Age at introduction to food pieces was determined based on repeated assessments during the first year. A range of neurodevelopmental outcomes among children were assessed using validated instruments, i.e. composite scores at 1 and 3.5 years, and a score for language acquisition at 2 years. Risk for developmental delay at 3.5 years was defined based on a developmental quotient (DQ) below 90 according to the child's chronological age and the respective composite score at this age. We used linear regression modelling to evaluate associations between age at introduction to food pieces and the standardised neurodevelopmental scores, while logistic regression models were used in the analyses according to the risk for developmental delay. RESULTS Our findings highlight consistent associations between late introduction to food pieces (i.e., after 10 months, compared to early (before 8 months)) and lower estimates of standardised neurodevelopmental scores at ages 1, 2 and 3.5 years (-0.35 [-0.40; -0.30], -0.15 [-0.20; -0.10] and - 0.18 [-0.23; -0.13], respectively). Infants introduced to pieces late were also more likely to be at risk for developmental delay according to DQ < 90 (OR [95%CI] = 1.62 [1.36; 1.94]). CONCLUSIONS This study shows that late introduction to food pieces (> 10 months) is related to lower neurodevelopmental scores. Given the challenges that complementary feeding may pose, concerted efforts are required to enhance our understanding of the sensory aspects of early diets and to ultimately provide guidance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The infant diet represents one of the main modifiable determinants of early growth. This study aimed to investigate the associations of infant feeding practices with body mass index (BMI) until 7.5 years. SUBJECTS/METHODS Analyses were based on data from the French nationwide ELFE birth cohort. Data on breastfeeding (BF) and complementary feeding (CF) were collected monthly from 2 to 10 months. Infant feeding practices were characterized using principal component analyses (PCA) and hierarchical ascendant classification. BMI z-score was computed at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7.5 years, from data collected in the child's health booklet; 7.5-year overweight was defined according to IOTF references. Associations between infant feeding practices and BMI were investigated by linear regression models adjusted for main confounders. RESULTS Ever breastfeeding was not associated with BMI up to 7.5 years. Compared to intermediate breastfeeding duration (1 to <3 months), longer breastfeeding duration (≥6 months) was related to lower 1-year BMI, but not at older ages. Compared to the recommended age at CF introduction (4-6 months), early CF (<4 months) was related to higher BMI up to 5 years with a similar trend at 7.5 years, but not to the risk of overweight. The PCA patterns characterized by early baby cereal introduction and late food pieces introduction or by frequent intake of main food groups were related to a lower BMI up to 7.5 years. CONCLUSION Breastfeeding was related with a lower BMI in infancy but not thereafter, whereas an early CF initiation (<4 months) was associated with a higher BMI in childhood.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite strategies and recommendations for complementary feeding initiation were applied globally, mothers initiated complementary feeding to the infants on time was low. Previous works of literatures were not identified the effect of parity on time to initiate complementary feeding. Particularly, evidences regarding to this in Ethiopia is scanty. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the effect of parity on time to initiate complementary feeding among mother-infants pairs in Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS A community-based prospective cohort study was carried out among 732 primipara, and 1464 multipara mothers who had a live birth in Northwest Ethiopia. Data were collected using Kobo collect software at the start of and on a monthly bases until the end of the follow up period. Parity as exposure variable and other confounders were analyzed using cox proportional hazard regression. Kaplan-Meier survival curve and the Schoenfeld residuals global test (P-value = 0.4861) was performed. Hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was used to declare statistical significance of predictors. RESULTS The overall incidence rate of initiation of complementary feeding among primipara and multipara mothers were 16.27 (95%CI: 15.04, 17.61) and 13.30 (95%CI: 12.53, 14.12) person months' observations respectively. The median time to initiate complementary feeding among primipara and multipara mothers for their infants was 5 and 6 months respectively. Primipara mothers had a 30% higher rate to initiate complementary feeding early (AHR = 1.30, 95%CI: 1.17, 1.43). Age from 15 to 24 and 25-34 years (AHR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.36, 2.09; and AHR = 1.45, 95%CI: 1.17, 1.81) and Birth type (twin) (AHR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.02, 1.64) were statistically significant predictors for time to initiate complementary feeding. CONCLUSIONS Parity was identified as a statistically significant predictor for time to initiate complementary feeding. The incidence rate of early and late initiation of complementary feeding was higher among primipara than multipara mothers. Besides, the median time to initiate complementary feeding was earlier among primipara than multipara mothers. So, a parity based complementary feeding practice education should be advocated to tackle the gap and further reduce infants and children malnutrition. Relatively younger age and twin delivered mothers initiated complementary feeding against the recommendation. Therefore, intervention considering such statistically significant predictors could have a public health importance.

Abstract
Background Early feeding practices have a critical role in the future not only in health but also in modulating eating habits. This study aimed to assess breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices and the nutritional status of Portuguese toddlers aged 0-36 months. Methods EPACI Portugal 2012 is a cross-sectional study of a national representative sample. Trained interviewers collected data about early feeding practices and anthropometrics. Body mass index was classified according to World Health Organization criteria. Frequencies and survival analysis were used to characterize variables. Results More than 90% of children were initiated breastfeeding, around 20% were exclusively breastfed for six months, and about 20% were breastfed at 12 months while complementary feeding was taking place. Exclusive breastfeeding was determined by maternal prepregnancy body mass index (HR 1.01; 95% CI 1.00, 1.03, P=.03) and low birth weight (HR 1.61; IC 95% 1.21, 2.15, P=.001) of the infants. About 90% were initiated complementary feeding between four and six months, and almost 10% were introduced to cow's milk before 12 months. In the second year of life, 83.2% and 61.6% of toddlers have already consumed nectars and sweet desserts, respectively. About one-third of Portuguese toddlers showed a body mass index z-score >1, and 6.6% were overweight/obese (z-score >2). No association was found between the duration of breastfeeding or timing of complementary feeding and the body mass index z-score in children. Conclusions Despite the low prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding at six months, Portuguese infants effectively comply with dietary recommendations during the first year of life. The transition to the family diet must be carefully made. There is a high prevalence of Portuguese toddlers at least at overweight risk. The duration of breastfeeding or timing of complementary feeding was not associated with the expression of overweight/obesity.

Abstract
CONTEXT The timing of introducing complementary feeding (CF) is crucial because premature or delayed CF can be associated with adverse health outcomes in childhood and adulthood. OBJECTIVE This systematic review aims to evaluate the impact of the timing of CF introduction on health, nutrition, and developmental outcomes among normal-term infants. DATA SOURCES Electronic databases and trial registries were searched, along with the reference lists of the included studies and relevant systematic reviews. DATA EXTRACTION Two investigators independently extracted data from the included studies on a standardized data-extraction form. DATA ANALYSIS Data were meta-analyzed separately for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies on the basis of early introduction of CF (< 3 months, < 4 months, < 6 months of age) or late introduction of CF (> 6 months, > 8 months of age). Evidence was summarized according to GRADE criteria. In total, 268 documents were included in the review, of which 7 were RCTs (from 24 articles) and 217 were observational studies (from 244 articles). Evidence from RCTs did not suggest an impact of early introduction, while low-certainty evidence from observational studies suggested that early introduction of CF (< 6 months) might increase body mass index (BMI) z score and overweight/obesity. Early introduction at < 3 months might increase BMI and odds of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), and early introduction at < 4 months might increase height, LRTI, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP). For late introduction of CF, there was a lack of evidence from RCTs, but low-certainty evidence from observational studies suggests that late introduction of CF (> 6 months) might decrease height, BMI, and systolic and diastolic BP and might increase odds of intestinal helminth infection, while late introduction of CF (> 8 months) might increase height-for-age z score. CONCLUSION Insufficient evidence does suggest increased adiposity with early introduction of CF. Hence, the current recommendation of introduction of CF should stand, though more robust studies, especially from low- and middle-income settings, are needed. Abstract
BACKGROUND Conflicting results have been obtained when analyzing the relationship between complementary feeding (CF) practices and allergic diseases in childhood. This study aims to further explore the association between allergic diseases in early childhood (10.1016/j.jaci.2012.02.036) and the age at CF introduction (10.1016/S0140-6736(15)00149-X), food diversity in the first year of life (10.1016/j.ijporl.2019.109759) and the delayed introduction of major allergenic foods. METHODS This analysis focused on 6662 children from the French nationwide ELFE cohort. Data on feeding practices were collected monthly from 3 to 10 months old. Their age at CF introduction was calculated alongside a diversity score, and the number of major allergenic foods (out of eggs, fish, wheat, and dairy products) not introduced at 8 and 10 months. Their associations with parent-reported allergy-related health events between 1 and 5.5 years were assessed using logistic regressions adjusted for confounding factors. A sensitivity analysis excluding early allergic cases (occurring between 2 months and 1 or 2 years) was conducted. RESULTS Late CF (>6 months) was related to a higher risk of food allergy (OR [95% CI] = 1.35 [1.02; 1.78]), a low diversity score at 8 months to a higher risk of asthma (OR [95% CI] = 1.22 [1.01; 1.48]), and two allergenic foods or more not being introduced at 10 months to a higher risk of rhinoconjunctivitis (OR [95% CI] = 1.20 [1.00; 1.44]) and food allergy (OR [95% CI] = 2.46 [1.77; 3.42]). Only this last association remained significant after the exclusion of early cases. CONCLUSION The delayed introduction of major allergenic foods is related to a higher risk of food allergy, which supports the updated guidelines for allergy prevention.

Abstract
The complementary feeding introduction period (introduction of solid foods alongside breastmilk or formula) is defining in children's health; however, it appears that many parents do not follow complementary feeding guidelines. Our aim was to describe current parental feeding practices during complementary feeding in relation to current recommendations and explore determinants of adherence to guidelines. We included any relevant studies published within the last decade in French or English and summarized findings by recommendation category. The timing of complementary food introduction varied widely across and within continents (earlier in North America and often delayed in Asia). The introduction of allergenic foods tended to be delayed globally. Although some parents now begin complementary feeding with solid foods (i.e., baby-led weaning), delayed introduction of lumpy textures was still prevalent in the United States and in Europe. The consumption of iron-rich foods was predominantly low in Africa. Added sugars were globally introduced early, especially in America. Evidence for the prevalence of responsive feeding practices among parents is unclear due to the small number of studies. Determinants of complementary feeding practices included parental characteristics, such as age, education, socio-economic status, and race/ethnicity. Interventions aiming to increase adherence to complementary feeding guidelines must account for parental characteristics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE High magnitude of adiposity peak and early adiposity rebound are early risk markers of later obesity. Infant diet represents one of the main modifiable determinants of early growth. This study aimed to investigate the association between infant feeding practices and age and magnitude of adiposity peak and rebound. SUBJECTS/METHODS Analyses were based on data from the French EDEN mother-child cohort. Data on breastfeeding and complementary feeding were collected at birth and 4, 8, and 12 months. From clinical examinations and measurements collected in the child's health booklet up to 12 years, individual growth curves were modeled, and ages and magnitudes of adiposity peak and rebound were estimated. Associations between infant feeding practices and growth were investigated by multivariable linear regression in children after testing a child-sex interaction. RESULTS In the studied population (n = 1225), adiposity peak occurred at a mean of 9.9 ± 2 months and adiposity rebound at 5.5 ± 1.4 years. Associations between infant feeding practices and adiposity peak or rebound were moderated by child sex. For girls, each additional month of breastfeeding was related to a 2-day increase in the age at adiposity peak (p < 0.001), and an 18-day increase in the age at adiposity peak (p = 0.004). Whereas for boys, each additional month for the age at complementary food introduction was associated with a 29-day increase in the age at adiposity rebound (p = 0.02). For boys, long breastfeeding duration was only related to reduced body mass index at adiposity peak. CONCLUSIONS Child sex has a moderating effect on the association between infant feeding practices and adiposity peak or rebound. The well-known association between breastfeeding duration and early growth seems stronger in girls than boys. The association found for complementary feeding in boys may give new insights into preventing obesity.

Abstract
Objectives: To assess (1) whether a history of allergy is associated with feeding with organic foods (OFs) during the complementary feeding period and (2) whether OF consumption in infancy is related to the incidence of respiratory and allergic diseases up to age 5.5 years. Study Design: Analyses involved more than 8,000 children from the nationwide Étude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) birth cohort. Associations between family or infant history of allergy and frequency of OF consumption during the complementary feeding period were assessed with multinomial logistic regression. Associations between OF consumption in infancy and respiratory or allergic diseases between age 1 and 5.5 years were assessed with logistic regression. Results: A family history of allergy or cow's milk protein allergy at age 2 months was strongly and positively related to feeding with OF during the complementary feeding period. Feeding with OF during the complementary feeding period was not related to respiratory diseases or eczema up to age 5.5 years. Compared to infrequent consumption of both organic and commercial complementary foods, frequent OF consumption without commercial complementary foods was associated with a higher risk of food allergy, whereas frequent commercial complementary food consumption without OF use was associated with a lower risk of food allergy. Conclusions: This study suggests that a history of allergy strongly affects feeding with OF during the complementary feeding period. However, OF consumption was not associated with reduced odds of food allergy later in childhood but could be associated with increased odds, which should be examined more deeply.

Abstract
Organic food consumption and its effects on health remain understudied in adults and in children. The aim of this study was to describe family characteristics associated with feeding infants organic foods during the complementary feeding period. The analysis included 9764 children from the French Étude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) birth cohort. In addition to telephone interviews conducted at 2, 12 and 24 months, a monthly questionnaire about milk feeding and complementary foods (including organic foods) was completed by parents between 3 and 10 months. Associations between family characteristics and feeding with organic foods during complementary feeding were analysed by multivariable multinomial logistic regression. Overall, 51 % of infants never consumed organic food during the complementary feeding period (up to 10 months), 24 % sometimes, 15 % often and 9 % always or almost always. As compared with infants never fed organic foods, those 'often' or 'always' fed organic foods were born to older mothers, with higher education level or family income, and lower pre-pregnancy BMI. As compared with never-smoking women, women who had stopped smoking before pregnancy were more likely to feed their infant organic foods. Feeding with organic foods was also related to long breast-feeding duration and later introduction to complementary foods. To conclude, associations between feeding with organic foods and family socio-economic position as well as infant feeding practices need to be considered when studying the impact of organic foods on children's health and development.

Abstract
This article focuses on parental perceptions of signs of hunger and satiety in children under 4 years of age and their effects on feeding practices, in a sample of parents of children with typical development. Discourse analysis shows the close relationships between social food norms, nutritional norms, medicalized child care norms, and educational norms in adults’ determination of children’s appetites according to their perceived needs and psychomotor development. The results also indicate how these norms are expressed according to social position, parental experience and context. More broadly, this article addresses top-down education—from adults to children—in food socialization, and points to the varying attention paid to the signals given by the child. It thus highlights some of the processes by which biological, psychological and social factors interact in socializing children to food.

Abstract
An exposure to sweetened and fatty foods early in life may be involved in high liking later in life. The objective is to investigate the association between dietary exposure to carbohydrate, sugars and fat in infancy, with liking for sweetness, fattiness and fattiness-and-sweetness sensations at 8-to-12-year-old. Analyses were conducted on 759 French children from the EDEN mother-child cohort. Carbohydrate, sugar or fat intake, being a consumer of added sugars or added fats were assessed at 8 and 12 months using 3-day food records. The liking score (0–10) for the different sensations was assessed through an online child-completed questionnaire. Associations were tested by linear regressions adjusted for main confounders and the interaction with sex was tested. None of the early dietary exposure variables was related to fattiness liking. Carbohydrate intake at 8 months was positively but weakly associated with liking for sweetness-and-fattiness. In girls only, carbohydrate intake at 12 months was positively associated with liking for sweetness. Globally, no marked associations were observed between infant dietary exposure to sweet and fat and liking for sweetness and fattiness in young children. The positive link in girls between early carbohydrate exposure and later liking for sweetness needs to be confirmed in further studies.

Abstract
Appropriate complementary feeding (CoF) is the key to preventing childhood obesity and promoting long-term health. Parents must be properly informed through the CoF process. Pediatricians have opportunities to interact with parents during the CoF transition and influence parental feeding decisions. They can convey public health nutrition messages to parents. With the release of new CoF recommendations in France in 2019, and from the perspective of their conversion into official public health communication material, the aim of this study was to explore parents’ and pediatricians’ perceptions and needs regarding information on CoF. Two online surveys were disseminated to gather information on CoF communication and guidance: one for parents (n = 1001, January 2020); one for pediatricians (n = 301, October 2019). The results showed that the importance of CoF for children’s healthy growth was well recognized by both parents and pediatricians. Parents acknowledged pediatricians as the most influential source of advice; and pediatricians were aware of their responsibility in counselling parents on CoF. However, pediatricians neglected the fact that parents gave high trust to their personal network when looking for advice. The Internet was a well-recognized source of information according to all. Diverging from what pediatricians considered useful, parents were interested in practical advice for implementing CoF. This study highlights common expectations and points of divergence between parents’ needs and pediatricians’ perceptions of those needs with regard to CoF information.

Abstract
Previously, we demonstrated that, in the short term, infants undercompensated for the energy from a preload given 25 min before an ad libitum meal. However, although not consistent, there is evidence in young children that caloric adjustment may occur over longer periods. We investigated the extent to which further energy adjustment occurs up to 24 h after a single meal preceded by preloads of varying energy density (ED) in infants that are 11 and 15 months old. Short-term caloric adjustment was measured in 11- and 15-month-old infants through a preload paradigm meal in the laboratory. To assess their caloric adjustment over longer periods (12 and 24 h), we used 24 h dietary records to evaluate the energy intake (EI) after each visit to the laboratory. Three COMPX scores were calculated according to three different time periods after preload consumption (0 h [i.e., short-term], 12 h or 24 h). Our main result was that, on average, regardless of the time period considered, the infants undercompensated their EI after preload consumption: at 11 and 15 months, caloric adjustment was partial and similar overtime. Considering that a slight repeated imbalance of the energy balance may promote rapid weight gain over the first months, this study calls for further research focusing on facilitators and barriers of efficient appetite control abilities in infancy.

Abstract
Family characteristics such as education level or income are related to infant feeding practices. This study aimed to characterize infant feeding practices and investigate their associations with family characteristics. Analyses were performed with data from a French nationwide cohort, Etude Longitudinale Française depuis l’Enfance (ELFE). Feeding practices were characterized by two methods, a principal component analysis and a hierarchical ascendant classification (n = 8922). This characterization was conducted in three steps: considering firstly only introduction of main food groups, then also food pieces and finally adding the type of complementary food. The associations between family characteristics and the infant feeding patterns or clusters were tested by linear or multinomial regressions (n = 7556). Besides breastfeeding duration and age of first introduction of complementary foods, it appeared also important to consider specific food groups such as sweetened beverages and cow’s milk, and the introduction of food pieces, to describe feeding practices. Recommended feeding practices (longer breastfeeding, complementary food in the right period) were related to higher maternal age and education level, so was migration status, the presence of older children, low income or the mothers’ attendance to pre-birth preparation classes. The interrelations between feeding practices and family characteristics must be considered when examining the influence of feeding practices on child’s health.

Abstract
The introduction of early complementary feeding (ECF) is determined by different factors depending on when it occurs. The objective of this study was to analyze factors associated with the introduction of ECF in two different moments of the infant's life: from zero to three and from four to five months of age. A cohort with 3,306 dyads studied in the BRISA survey in São Luis/MA in 2010 was used. Questionnaires were applied at birth and at follow-up when the infants were 15 to 36 months of age of women with more than 20 weeks of gestational age, residing in this municipality. A multivariate model of multinomial logistic regression was used to verify associations between independent variables and ECF at 0 to 3 months and at 4 to 5 months of age. A hierarchical analysis model was used to select variables for confounding adjustment. Variables with a P-value <0.05 were considered significant. For ECF introduced between 0-3 months, the variables "use of pacifier", "maternal paid activity", "smoking", and "postpartum pregnancy" were identified as risk factors. The variables "use of pacifier" and "maternal paid activity" remained associated as a risk for ECF introduced from 4-5 months. The variable 'mother without partner' (RR=1.26 and P=0.04) represented a risk factor for ECF only for the 4-5 months period. Although each period presented specific risk factors, the use of pacifier and maternal professional activity were associated in the two periods studied, indicating their importance for the introduction of ECF.

Abstract
Healthy infant feeding practices form the basis of healthy eating behaviour later in life. The effect of providing parents with recommendations on textured food introduction between 8 and 15 months on children's experience with and acceptance of textured foods was studied. Sixty parent/child dyads were randomly assigned to a control group (CG) receiving current French recommendations and an intervention group (IG) receiving a brochure with supplementary advice, tips and monthly counselling on food texture introduction. After the intervention, parents completed self-report measures about the introduction of 188 food items, including purees, soft/small pieces, hard/large pieces and double textures. Children's acceptance of eight textured foods was assessed in a laboratory setting. Parents in the IG introduced more soft/small food pieces (P = 0.004) but not more complex textures (P = 0.15). There was no group difference in children acceptance for any of the textured foods offered in the laboratory. Independent of their study group, children's exposure to texture was associated with birth order, self-feeding with fingers, low gagging frequency and seldom use of commercial baby foods. Higher acceptance was associated with higher exposure to food pieces but not to pureed foods (either smooth or rough) and with children's eating behavioural traits (high food enjoyment, high food responsiveness and low food fussiness). This pilot intervention demonstrated that providing information can be effective in promoting the introduction of small and soft food pieces, but the most effective way to influence the introduction of more challenging textures (hard pieces and double texture) is uncertain. Further research should focus on the identification of barriers to complex texture introduction and on how building on this knowledge for a population-based public health intervention.

Abstract
Sleep problems reported by parents affect 20% to 30% of infants. Few studies focused on the longitudinal association between infant feeding practices and sleep, especially in France. Analyses were based on 8,696 infants from the French national birth cohort ELFE. Collection of feeding practices from birth to 10 months allowed for the identification of trajectories of use of baby cereals and thickened formula by group‐based trajectory modelling and calculation of duration of any breastfeeding (BF) and age at complementary feeding introduction (CFI) excluding baby cereals. Total sleep duration (TSD), night waking (NW) and sleep onset difficulties (SOD) were reported at age 1. Associations between feeding and sleep were tested by multinomial logistic regressions. BF duration ≥6 months was associated with parent‐reported frequent NW, SOD and TSD ≤ 12 h/24 h at age 1. For TSD and SOD, this association was no longer significant after accounting for parental sleep‐related practices. Early use of baby cereals (≤5 months) was associated with poor sleep. Early CFI (<4 months) was associated with shorter TSD and SOD but not NW. Early use of thickened formula (only <6 months) was related to poor sleep at age 1 (NW and SOD), whereas late (around 6 months) use of thickened formula was associated with better sleep. BF duration ≥6 months was related to poor sleep at age 1 but not after adjustment on 1‐year parental sleep‐related practices except for NW. The use of baby cereals or early CFI was not related to better sleep at age 1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Partially hydrolyzed formulas (pHF) are recommended in non-breastfed infants with familial history of allergy to prevent allergy development. However, recent meta-analysis does not provide strong support for their protective effect. The present work assesses the links between 2-month infant formula use and the incidence of eczema, respiratory symptoms, or food allergies (FA) up to 2 years of age. METHODS The nationwide ELFE birth cohort is a population-based study from mainland France. Infant feeding (breast milk only, partially hydrolyzed formula with [pHF-HA] or without a hypoallergenic label [pHF-non-HA], and non-hydrolyzed formula [Nhf]) was reported at 2 months. Eczema, FA, and respiratory symptoms such as wheezing and asthma were reported at 2 months, 1 year, and 2 years. Infants with prior FA at 2 months were excluded from analyses. RESULTS Among 11 720 infants, those who received only breast milk at 2 months were at lower risk of eczema at 1 year than those who received nHF (OR[95% CI] = 0.78[0.65-0.94] in non-at-risk infants; 0.86[0.75-0.98] in at-risk infants). The use of pHF-HA, compared with nHF, at 2 months was related to higher risk of wheezing at 1 year in at-risk infants (1.68[1.24-2.28]) and higher risk of FA at 2 years both in non-at-risk infants (3.78[1.52-9.41]) and in at-risk infants (2.31[1.36-3.94]). CONCLUSIONS In this nationwide study, pHF-HA use was not associated with a lower risk of any of the studied outcomes. Quite the reverse, it was associated with a higher risk of wheezing and FA. This should be confirmed in further studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous results based on dietary recall suggest that the ability to adjust eaten quantities to food energy density (ED) may deteriorate around the age of 1 y. However, this hypothesis has not been investigated experimentally. OBJECTIVES The first aim of the study was to describe changes in the short-term caloric compensation ability of infants around the age of 1 y. We expected a decrease in this ability with age. The second aim was to identify individual factors [e.g., breastfeeding duration, body mass index (BMI) z-score, and change in BMI z-score] related to interindividual variations in caloric compensation ability. METHODS We adapted the preload paradigm to calculate a COMPX score. The measure was performed in the laboratory at 11 and 15 mo. The parent offered a food preload that was either low or high in ED (LED = 33 kcal/100 g or HED = 97.9 kcal/100 g, respectively), followed by an ad libitum meal after 25 min. The infants were measured and weighed. Information about the infants' milk-feeding history was collected. RESULTS We obtained COMPX scores at 11 and 15 mo for 31 infants (12 females). As hypothesized, the caloric compensation ability significantly decreased with age (COMPX11 = 52% ± 133%; COMPX15 = -14% ± 151%; P = 0.03). The more the COMPX score decreased, the more the BMI z-score between 11 and 15 mo increased (P = 0.03) and the higher the BMI z-score was at 2 y (P = 0.03). No associations were found between COMPX scores and breastfeeding duration (all P > 0.60). CONCLUSIONS Caloric compensation ability decreases between 11 and 15 mo. This decrease is associated with a larger increase in weight status from 11 to 15 mo and a higher weight status at 2 y. This study calls for further research to better understand the early determinants of caloric compensation ability. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The current review focuses on studies investigating the factors related to the development of preferences for foods and sensory inputs (tastes, odours, and food textures) in the first years of life, which constitutes a specific window for food learning. RECENT FINDINGS Foetal nutrition, intrauterine growth, and prematurity influence food preferences; this topic warrants more research to broaden our understanding of the 1000 days phenomenon. Although it is less studied than other sensory inputs, food texture acceptance, and the related sensitive period for texture introduction are attracting more attention, as is the impact of fat acceptance. Research should focus not on vegetables alone but on diverse foods whose consumption is encouraged (e.g., fishes and legumes). The role of parental feeding practices, as another major determinant, continues to inspire research exploring the bidirectional influences between children and caregivers. New interventions have confirmed the strong positive influence of repeated exposure to foods through familiarization via taste lessons, cooking, or play activities on acceptance. Interventions that consider individuals traits are necessary. SUMMARY Although new evidence is available, it remains a challenge to consider both individual traits and bidirectional influences between parents and children and to investigate this issue worldwide and in all socioeconomic status groups.

Abstract
The consumption of sugar, salt, and fat in infancy may influence later health. The objective of this study was to describe the frequency of use of added sugar, salt, and fat during the complementary feeding period and the associated infant caregiving practices. Data were obtained from a monthly questionnaire filled by parents for 10,907 infants from the French Etude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) cohort. A score of frequency of use (SU) for added sugar, salt, and fat (oil, margarine, butter, and/or cream) was calculated from the age at complementary feeding introduction (CFI) to the 10th month. Associations between the SU of each added ingredient with infant feeding and caregiving practices were studied with multivariable linear regressions adjusted for familial characteristics. Only 28% of the parents followed the recommendation of adding fat and simultaneously not adding sugar or salt. Breastfeeding mothers were more prone to add sugar, salt, and fat than non-breastfeeding mothers. CFI before four months was positively associated with the SU of added sugar and salt and negatively associated with the SU of added fat. The use of commercial baby food was negatively related to the SU of added salt and fat. The use of these added ingredients was mainly related to breastfeeding, age at CFI, and use of commercial food, and it was independent of the household socioeconomic characteristics.

Abstract
AbstractThe aims of this study were to describe which and when food textures are offered to children between 4 and 36 months in France and to identify the associated factors. An online cross-sectional survey was designed, including questions about 188 food texture combinations representing three texture levels: purées (T1), soft small pieces (T2) and hard/large pieces and double textures (T3). Mothers indicated which combinations they already offered to their child. A food texture exposure score (TextExp) was calculated for all of the texture levels combined and for each texture level separately. Associations between TextExp and maternal and child characteristics and feeding practices were explored by multiple linear regressions, per age class. Answers from 2999 mothers living in France, mostly educated and primiparous, were analysed. Over the first year, children were mainly exposed to purées. Soft and small pieces were slowly introduced between 6 and 22 months, whereas hard/large pieces were mainly introduced from 13 months onwards. TextExp was positively associated with children’s number of teeth and ability to eat alone with their finger or a fork. For almost all age classes, TextExp was higher in children introduced to complementary feeding earlier, lower for children who were offered only commercial baby foods and higher for those who were offered only home-made/non-specific foods during the second year. Our study shows that until 12 months of age the majority of French children were exposed to pieces to a small extent. It provides new insights to further understand the development of texture acceptance during a key period for the development of eating habits.

Abstract
Resumo Objetivo Analisar a associação entre o tipo de aleitamento e as dificuldades relacionadas à essa prática entre mulheres e crianças assistidas em um ambulatório especializado em amamentação. Métodos Estudo transversal retrospectivo realizado por meio da análise de prontuários de crianças e mulheres atendidas entre 2004 e 2016 em um ambulatório especializado em aleitamento materno. Foram excluídos os registros referentes às mulheres com gestação múltipla e àqueles não realizados em formulário padrão, totalizando 1.608 prontuários. Utilizaram-se os testes Qui-Quadrado e Kruskal-Wallis para comparar o tipo de aleitamento materno com variáveis categóricas; e com os dias de vida e idade materna, respectivamente. O teste Mann-Whitney utilizou-se para comparar a frequência do aleitamento materno exclusivo. Resultados O aleitamento materno exclusivo foi praticado por 72,6% das mulheres atendidas, nos primeiros 30 dias após o parto. Houve associação significativa entre esta prática e as dificuldades: percepção materna quanto à quantidade de leite produzida, de mamas cheias antes das mamadas, de vazamento de leite e extração manual do leite com facilidade; posicionamento materno e da criança, preensão, sucção e deglutição da criança adequados; além das variáveis: maior escolaridade, situação conjugal estável; ter tido experiência prévia com aleitamento materno, ter mamilos protrusos, ter realizado contato precoce pele a pele, ter filhos com menor média de dias de idade e que faziam uso de chupeta. Conclusão O aleitamento materno exclusivo foi o mais prevalente nos primeiros 30 dias pós-parto e diversas variáveis maternas e neonatais estiveram associadas à essa prática no primeiro atendimento em ambulatório especializado.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to estimate the age of complementary feeding introduction (CFI) and investigate the related health, demographic, and socio-economic factors. Analyses were based on 10,931 infants from the French national birth cohort ELFE, born in 2011. Health, demographic, and socio-economic data concerning infants and parents were collected at birth (face-to-face interviews and medical records) and 2 months (telephone interviews). Data on milk feeding and CFI practices were collected at birth and 2 months then monthly from 3 to 10 months using online or paper questionnaires. The associations between both health and social factors and CFI age were tested by multivariable multinomial logistic regressions. The mean CFI age was 5.2 ± 1.2 months; 26% of the infants started complementary feeding before 4 months of age (CF < 4 months), 62% between 4 and 6 months of age, and 12% after 6 months of age (CF > 6 months). CF < 4 months was more likely when mothers smoked, were overweight/obese, younger (<29 years), and used their personal experience as an information source in child caregiving and when both parents were not born in France. CF < 4 months was less likely when the infant was a girl, second-born, when the mother breastfed longer, and had attended at least one birth preparation class. Mothers of second-born infants and who breastfed their child longer were more likely to introduce CF > 6 months. Couples in which fathers were born in France and mothers were not born in France were less likely to introduce CF > 6 months. CF < 4 months occurred in more than 25% of the cases. It is important to continue promoting clear CFI recommendations, especially in smoking, overweight, young, not born in France, and nonbreastfeeding mothers.
