Hemoglobin patterns in American Indians

Haemoglobin D Punjab (D Los Angeles)

A search for haemoglobin variants undertaken in Canada revealed 21 unrelated instances of Hb D Punjab amongst 207,300 specimens tested. Of these, eight came from East Indian immigrants and the rest from Canadians of United Kingdom origin. No instances of Hb D Punjab were found in 14,500 specimens from Canadian Indians that were tested. The geographical origins of 27 instances of Hb D Punjab characterized at the MRC Abnormal Haemoglobin Unit, Cambridge are presented. Of these five were natives of the British Isles. The results of surveys undertaken in the United Kingdom are summarized. The global distribution of Hb D Punjab is discussed.

Hemoglobin Gcoushatta: A New Variant in an American Indian Family

A new hemoglobin variant, G(couhatta) (alpha2(A) beta2(iiiglu-->ala)), has been found in three generations of a family from the Alabama Coushatta Indian tribe in east Texas. The propositus suffers from an apparently unrelated, possibly genetic, agranulocytosis. According to the history and the blood grouping data there is considerable in breeding in the tribe and remarkably little admixture with other ethnic groups.

Abnormal Hemoglobin Studies in Taiwan Aborigines

No abnormal hemoglobins were detected in a survey of blood samples from three of the largest aboriginal tribes of Taiwan. Samples from 655 individuals of the Ami, Paiwan, and Atayal tribes were examined by Smithies' method of vertical starch gel electrophoresis at pH 9.0. Only the A hemoglobins were found.

Hemoglobin Types of the Caingang Indians of Brazil

We studied the hemoglobin types of 440 individuals (306 unrelated) cytologically and by paper electrophoresis. These included 334 (252 unrelated) putative "full bloods." No abnormal types were found.
