Rationalized landscape on protein-based cancer nanomedicine: Recent progress and challenges

The clinical advancement of protein-based nanomedicine has revolutionized medical professionals' perspectives on cancer therapy. Protein-based nanoparticles have been exploited as attractive vehicles for cancer nanomedicine due to their unique properties derived from naturally biomacromolecules with superior biocompatibility and pharmaceutical features. Furthermore, the successful translation of Abraxane™ (paclitaxel-based albumin nanoparticles) into clinical application opened a new avenue for protein-based cancer nanomedicine. In this mini-review article, we demonstrate the rational design and recent progress of protein-based nanoparticles along with their applications in cancer diagnosis and therapy from recent literature. The current challenges and hurdles that hinder clinical application of protein-based nanoparticles are highlighted. Finally, future perspectives for translating protein-based nanoparticles into clinic are identified.

Self-assembly of nanocrystal checkerboard patterns via non-specific interactions

Checkerboard lattices-where the resulting structure is open, porous, and highly symmetric-are difficult to create by self-assembly. Synthetic systems that adopt such structures typically rely on shape complementarity and site-specific chemical interactions that are only available to biomolecular systems (e.g., protein, DNA). Here we show the assembly of checkerboard lattices from colloidal nanocrystals that harness the effects of multiple, coupled physical forces at disparate length scales (interfacial, interparticle, and intermolecular) and that do not rely on chemical binding. Colloidal Ag nanocubes were bi-functionalized with mixtures of hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface ligands and subsequently assembled at an air-water interface. Using feedback between molecular dynamics simulations and interfacial assembly experiments, we achieve a periodic checkerboard mesostructure that represents a tiny fraction of the phase space associated with the polymer-grafted nanocrystals used in these experiments. In a broader context, this work expands our knowledge of non-specific nanocrystal interactions and presents a computation-guided strategy for designing self-assembling materials.

Molecular mechanism of nanomaterials induced liver injury: A review

The unique physicochemical properties inherent to nanoscale materials have unveiled numerous potential applications, spanning beyond the pharmaceutical and medical sectors into various consumer industries like food and cosmetics. Consequently, humans encounter nanomaterials through diverse exposure routes, giving rise to potential health considerations. Noteworthy among these materials are silica and specific metallic nanoparticles, extensively utilized in consumer products, which have garnered substantial attention due to their propensity to accumulate and induce adverse effects in the liver. This review paper aims to provide an exhaustive examination of the molecular mechanisms underpinning nanomaterial-induced hepatotoxicity, drawing insights from both in vitro and in vivo studies. Primarily, the most frequently observed manifestations of toxicity following the exposure of cells or animal models to various nanomaterials involve the initiation of oxidative stress and inflammation. Additionally, we delve into the existing in vitro models employed for evaluating the hepatotoxic effects of nanomaterials, emphasizing the persistent endeavors to advance and bolster the reliability of these models for nanotoxicology research.

Effect of Particle-Substrate Interactions on Colloidal Layer Structure Prepared by Convective Self-Assembly Using Polyelectrolyte-Grafted Silica Particles

Cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes, poly(vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride) (PVBTA) and poly(sodium styrene sulfate) (PSSS), were grafted on the surface of the silica particles, respectively, and then these two types of polyelectrolyte-grafted silica particles were applied to the colloidal layer preparation by convective self-assembly (CSA) using hydrophilic or hydrophobic glass substrates to investigate the effect of the interactions between the particles and the substrate surface on the resultant layer structures. When the PVBTA-grafted silica particle (PVBTA-Si) was used, the colloidal monolayers with a non-close-packed (NCP) structure were formed on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic glass substrates, where the NCP colloidal layers on the hydrophobic glass substrate have a somewhat more ordered structure than those on the hydrophilic glass substrate. In the case of the PSSS-grafted silica particle (PSSS-Si), on the other hand, stripe patterns with close-packed (CP) colloidal layers were obtained on both types of the glass substrates. The number of layers of the stripes on the hydrophilic glass substrate was less than that on the hydrophobic glass substrate, while the spacing and width of the stripes on both substrates were similar to each other. The difference in the structures of the colloidal layers obtained here indicates that an attractive interaction, such as an electrostatic attraction and a hydrophobic interaction, between the particle and the substrate surface is necessary to achieve the NCP structure by the CSA process using polyelectrolyte-grafted silica particles.

Chemical transformation mechanism for blue-to-green emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals

Recently, metal-halide perovskites have rapidly emerged as efficient light emitters with near-unity quantum yield and size-dependent optical and electronic properties, which have attracted considerable attention from researchers. However, the ultrafast nucleation rate of ionic perovskite counterparts severely limits the in-depth exploration of the growth mechanism of colloidal nanocrystals (NCs). Herein, we used an inorganic ligand nitrosonium tetrafluoroborate (NOBF4) to trigger a slow post-synthesis transformation process, converting non-luminescent Cs4PbBr6 NCs into bright green luminescent CsPbBr3 NCs to elucidate the concrete transformation mechanism via four stages: (i) the dissociation of pristine NCs, (ii) the formation of Pb-Br intermediates, (iii) low-dimensional nanoplatelets (NPLs) and (iv) cubic CsPbBr3 NCs, corresponding to the blue-to-green emission process. The desorption and reorganization of organic ligands induced by NO+ and the involvement of BF4- in the ligand exchange process played pivotal roles in this dissolution-recrystallization of NCs. Moreover, controlled shape evolution from anisotropic NPLs to NCs was investigated through variations in the amount of NOBF4. This further validates that additives exert a decisive role in the symmetry and growth of nanostructured perovskite crystals during phase transition based on the ligand-exchange mechanism. This finding serves as a source of inspiration for the synthesis of highly luminescent CsPbBr3 NCs, providing valuable insights into the chemical mechanism in post-synthesis transformation.

Local Heating Induced Single-Crystalline Phase Control in Electrochemical Synthesis of Nanomaterials

Development of synthetic strategies selectively yielding single crystals is desired owing to the facet-dependent chemical reactivities. Recent advances in electrochemical materials synthesis yielded nanomaterials that are surfactant-free, however, typically in polycrystalline forms. In this work, an electrochemical synthetic strategy selectively yielding single-crystalline nanoparticles by implementation of surface-selective heating of the working electrode is developed. Single crystals of copper, silver, gold, and platinum are afforded, and the crystallinity verified by electron diffraction and chemical reactivity studies. Notably, Cu (100) surface prepared by electrochemical synthesis yielded high single product selectivity when applied to electrochemical CO2 reduction catalysis.

Exploring intermixed magnetic nanoparticles: insights from atomistic spin dynamics simulations

Binary nanoparticles, composed of both rare-earth elements with substantial magnetic properties and transition metals known for their high magnetic ordering temperatures, hold great promise as innovative materials for novel magnetic applications. In this study, we employ an atomistic spin dynamics framework to investigate how the magnetic properties change at finite temperatures in mixed NiGd nanoparticles. We specifically examine parameters such as saturation magnetization and spin-reorientation in relation to the nanoparticle's size, which ranges from 4 nm to 16 nm, and composition. Our findings reveal that Ni75Gd25 nanoparticles demonstrate exceptional magnetic properties at finite temperatures, marked by significantly increased saturation magnetizations and magnetic ordering temperatures. In contrast, nanoparticles containing 50% and 75% Gd contents exhibit notably reduced saturation magnetizations and magnetic ordering temperatures. Theoretical findings of our study shed light on the pivotal role that the Gd content plays in determining the magnetic behaviour at finite temperatures.

Mesoscale self-organization of polydisperse magnetic nanoparticles at the water surface

In this study, we investigated the self-ordering process in Langmuir films of polydisperse iron oxide nanoparticles on a water surface, employing in situ x-ray scattering, surface pressure-area isotherm analysis, and Brewster angle microscopy. X-ray reflectometry confirmed the formation of a monolayer, while grazing incidence small-angle x-ray scattering revealed short-range lateral correlations with a characteristic length equal to the mean particle size. Remarkably, our findings indicated that at zero surface pressure, the particles organized into submicrometer clusters, merging upon compression to form a homogeneous layer. These layers were subsequently transferred to a solid substrate using the Langmuir-Schaefer technique and further characterized via scanning electron microscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry. Notably, our measurements revealed a second characteristic length in the lateral correlations, orders of magnitude longer than the mean particle diameter, with polydisperse particles forming circular clusters densely packed in a hexagonal lattice. Furthermore, our evidence suggests that the lattice constant of this mesocrystal depends on the characteristics of the particle size distribution, specifically the mean particle size and the width of the size distribution. In addition, we observed internal size separation within these clusters, where larger particles were positioned closer to the center of the cluster. Finally, polarized neutron reflectometry measurements provided valuable insights into the magnetization profile across the layer.

Facet-dependent dispersion and aggregation of aqueous hematite nanoparticles

Nanoparticle aggregates in solution controls surface reactivity and function. Complete dispersion often requires additive sorbents to impart a net repulsive interaction between particles. Facet engineering of nanocrystals offers an alternative approach to produce monodisperse suspensions simply based on facet-specific interaction with solvent molecules. Here, we measure the dispersion/aggregation of three morphologies of hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles in varied aqueous solutions using ex situ electron microscopy and in situ small-angle x-ray scattering. We demonstrate a unique tendency of (104) hematite nanoparticles to maintain a monodisperse state across a wide range of solution conditions not observed with (001)- and (116)-dominated particles. Density functional theory calculations reveal an inert, densely hydrogen-bonded first water layer on the (104) facet that favors interparticle dispersion. Results validate the notion that nanoparticle dispersions can be controlled through morphology for specific solvents, which may help in the development of various nanoparticle applications that rely on their interfacial area to be highly accessible in stable suspensions.

Crystal Self-Assembly under Confinement: Bridging Nanomaterials to Integrated Devices

ConspectusSelf-assembly, a spontaneous process that organizes disordered constituents into ordered structures, has revolutionized our fundamental understanding of living matter, nanotechnology, and molecular science. From the perspective of nanomaterials, self-assembly serves as a bottom-up method for creating long-range-ordered materials. This is accomplished by tailoring the geometry, chemistry, and interactions of the components, thereby facilitating the efficient fabrication of high-quality materials and high-performance functional devices. Over the past few decades, we have seen controllable organization and diverse phases in self-assembled materials, such as organic crystals, biomolecular structures, and colloidal nanoparticle supercrystals. However, most self-assembled ordered materials and their assembly mechanisms are derived from constituents in a liquid bulk medium, where the effects of boundaries and interfaces are negligible. In the context of nanostructure patterning, self-assembly occurs in confined spaces, with feature sizes ranging from a few to hundreds of nanometers. In such settings, ubiquitous boundaries and interfaces can trap the system in a kinetically favored but metastable state, devoid of long-range order. This makes it extremely difficult to achieve ordered structures in micro/nano-patterning techniques that rely on sessile microdroplets, such as inkjet printing, dip-pen lithography, and contact printing.In stark contrast to sessile droplets, capillary bridges─formed by liquids confined between two solid surfaces─provide unique opportunities for understanding the long-range-ordered self-assembly of crystalline materials under spatial confinement. Because capillary bridges are stabilized by Laplace pressure, which is inversely proportional to the feature size, the confinement and manipulation of solutions or suspensions of functional materials at the nanoscale become accessible through the rational design of surface chemistry and geometry. Although global thermodynamic equilibrium is unattainable in evaporative systems, ordered nucleation and packing of constituent components can be locally realized at the contact line of capillary bridges. This enables the unprecedented fabrication of long-range-ordered micro/nanostructures with deterministic patterns.In this Account, we review the advancements in long-range-ordered self-assembly of crystalline micro/nanostructures under confinement. First, we briefly introduce crystalline materials characterized by strong intramolecular interactions and relatively weak intermolecular forces, analyzing both the opportunities and challenges inherent to self-assembled nanomaterials. Next, we delve into the construction and manipulation of confined liquids, focusing especially on capillary bridges controlled by engineered chemistry and geometry to regulate Laplace pressure. Through this approach, we have achieved capillary bridges with thicknesses on the order of a few nanometers and wafer-scale homogeneity, facilitating the self-assembly of ordered structures. Supported by factors such as local free-volume entropy, electrostatic interactions, curvilinear geometry, directional microfluidics, and nanoconfinement, we have achieved long-range-ordered, deterministic patterning of organic semiconductors, metal-halide perovskites, and colloidal nanocrystal superlattices using this capillary-bridge platform. These long-range microstructures serve as a bridge between nanomaterials and integrated devices, enabling emergent functionalities like intrinsic stretchability, giant photoconductivity, propagating and interacting exciton polaritons, and spin-valley-locked lasing, which are otherwise unattainable in disordered materials. Finally, we discuss potential directions for both the fundamental understanding and practical applications of confined self-assembly.

Advent in proteins, nucleic acids, and biological cell membranes functionalized nanocarriers to accomplish active or homologous tumor targeting for smart amalgamated chemotherapy/photo-therapy: A review

Conventional cancer mono-therapeutic approaches including radiotherapy, surgery, and chemotherapy don't always achieve satisfactory outcomes and are frequently associated with significant limitations. Although chemotherapy is a vital intervention, its effectiveness is frequently inadequate and is associated with metastasis, multidrug resistance, off-target effect, and normal cells toxicity. Phototherapies are employed in cancer therapy, encompassing photo-dynamic and photo-thermal therapies which under favorable NIR laser light irradiation initiate the included photosensitizers and photo-thermal agents to generate ROS or thermal heat respectively for cancer cells destruction. Photo-therapy is considered noninvasive, posing no resistance, but it still suffers from several pitfalls like low penetration depth and excessive heat generation affecting neighboring tissues. Improved selectivity and tumor-homing capacity could be attained through surface modulation of nanoparticles with targeting ligands that bind to receptors, which are exclusively overexpressed on cancerous cells. Developing novel modified targeted nanoparticulate platforms integrating different therapeutic modalities like photo-therapy and chemotherapy is a topic of active research. This review aimed to highlight recent advances in proteins, nucleic acids, and biological cell membranes functionalized nanocarriers for smart combinatorial chemotherapy/photo-therapy. Nanocarriers decorated with precise targeting ligands, like aptamers, antibody, and lactoferrin, to achieve active tumor-targeting or camouflaging using various biological cell membrane coating are designed to achieve homologous tumor-targeting.

2D superlattices via interfacial self-assembly of polymer-grafted Au nanoparticles

Nanoparticle (NP) superlattices are periodic arrays of nanoscale building blocks. Because of the collective effect between functional NPs, NP superlattices can exhibit exciting new properties that are distinct from those of individual NPs or corresponding bulk materials. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) NP superlattices have attracted increasing attention due to their emerging applications in micro/opto-electronics, catalysis, sensing, and other fields. Among various preparation methods, evaporation-induced interfacial self-assembly has become the most popular method for preparing 2D NP superlattices because it is a simple, low-cost, and scalable process that can be widely applied to various NPs. Introducing soft ligands, such as polymers, can not only provide convenience in controlling the self-assembly process and tuning superlattice structures but also improve the properties of 2D NP superlattices. This feature article focuses on the methods of evaporation-induced self-assembly of polymer-grafted Au NPs into free-standing 2D NP superlattice films at air/liquid interfaces and 2D NP superlattice coatings on substrates, followed by studies on in situ tracking of the self-assembly evolution process through small-angle X-ray scattering. Their application in nano-floating gate memory devices is also included. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of this direction are discussed.

Lemon extract supported green synthesis of bimetallic CuO/Ag nanoporous materials for sensitive detection of vitamin D3

In modern era, deficiency of Vitamin D3 is predominantly due to limited exposure to sunlight and UV radiation resulting from indoor lifestyles. Several studies have revealed that vitamin D deficiency can lead to chronic vascular inflammation, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, congestive left ventricular hypertrophy, and heart failure. This study introduces a green synthesis of novel bimetallic nanoporous composite, CuO/Ag using lemon extract. The synthesized nanoporous material, CuO/Ag@lemon extract was characterized using several analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The CuO/Ag@lemon extract nanoparticles were immobilized on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to prepare modified CuO/Ag@lemon extract-GCE interface. The electrocatalytic and electrochemical properties investigation was carried out on the modified electrode. using cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and amperometry for detecting of Vitamin D3. The DPV method displayed a linear response range of 0.02-22.5 µM with a detection limit of 2.62 nM, while the amperometric method showed a broader linear range of 0.25-23.25 µM with a detection limit of 2.70 nM with 82% modified electrode stability. The designed electrode exhibited a positive response to the inclusion of Vitamin D3 with electro-oxidation, reaching steady-state within 3.4 s, with 87% reproducibility within a day. The proposed method offers a rapid and sensitive platform for detection of Vitamin D3 with minimal interference from other molecules. The early diagnosis of Vitamin D3 deficiency using modified electrodes allows for early treatment, thereby preventing severe health complications.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Electric Field-Driven Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoparticle Monolayers on Silicon Substrates

Nanoparticles (NPs) bridge the gap between bulk materials and their equivalent molecular/atomic counterparts. The physical, optical, and electronic properties of individual NPs alter with the changes in their surrounding environment at the nanoscale. Similarly, the characteristics of thin films of NPs depend on their lateral and volumetric densities. Thus, attaining single monolayers of these NPs would play a vital role in the improved characteristics of semiconductor devices such as nanosensors, field effect transistors, and energy harvesting devices. Developing nanosensors, for instance, requires precise methods to fabricate a monolayer of NPs on selected substrates for sensing and other applications. Herein, we developed a physical fabrication method to form a monolayer of NPs on a planar silicon surface by creating an electric field of intensity 5.71 × 104 V/m between parallel plates of a capacitor, by applying a DC voltage. The physics of monolayer formation caused by an externally applied electric field on the gold NPs (Au-NPs) of size 20 nm in diameter and possesses a zeta potential of -250 to -290 mV, is further analyzed with the help of the finite element simulation. The enhanced electric field, in the order of 108 V/m, around the Au-NPs indicates a high surface charge density on the NPs, which results in a high electric force per unit area that guides them to settle uniformly on the surface of the silicon substrate.

Defect-Engineering by Solvent Mediated Mild Oxidation as a Tool to Induce Exchange Bias in Metal Doped Ferrites

The crystal site occupancy of different divalent ions and the induction of lattice defects represent an additional tool for modifying the intrinsic magnetic properties of spinel ferrites nanoparticles. Here, the relevance of the lattice defects is demonstrated in the appearance of exchange-bias and in the improvement of the magnetic properties of doped ferrites of 20 nm, obtained from the mild oxidation of core@shell (wüstite@ferrite) nanoparticles. Three types of nanoparticles (Fe0.95 O@Fe3 O4 , Co0.3 Fe0.7 O@Co0.8 Fe2.2 O4 and Ni0.17 Co0.21 Fe0.62 O@Ni0.4 Co0.3 Fe2.3 O4 ) are oxidized. As a result, the core@shell morphology is removed and transformed in a spinel-like nanoparticle, through a topotactic transformation. This study shows that most of the induced defects in these nanoparticles and their magnetic properties are driven by the inability of the Co(II) ions at the octahedral sites to migrate to tetrahedral sites, at the chosen mild oxidation temperature. In addition, the appearance of crystal defects and antiphase boundaries improves the magnetic properties of the starting compounds and leads to the appearance of exchange bias at room temperature. These results highlight the validity of the proposed method to impose novel magnetic characteristics in the technologically relevant class of nanomaterials such as spinel ferrites, expanding their potential exploitation in several application fields.

Preparation, characterization, and magnetic resonance imaging of Fe nanowires

A facile template method was employed to synthesize Fe nanowires of different sizes, dimensions. Comprehensive analyses were conducted to explore their morphology, structure, composition, and magnetic properties. The surface of as-prepared Fe nanowires was modified with SiO2 by sol-gel method to improve the dispersion of as-prepared Fe nanowires in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the relaxation properties, biocompatibility and in vivo imaging abilities of the Fe@SiO2 nanowires were evaluated. The study revealed that the SiO2-coated Fe nanowires functioned effectively as transverse relaxation time (T2) contrast agents (CAs). Notably, as the length of the Fe@SiO2 nanowires increased, their diameter decreased, leading to a higher the transverse relaxivity (r2) value. Our study identified that among the Fe nanowires synthesized, the Fe3@SiO2 nanowires, characterized by a diameter of around 30 nm and a length of approximately 500 nm, exhibited the highest r2 value of 59.3 mM-1 s-1. These nanowires demonstrated good biocompatibility and non-toxicity. Notably, upon conducting small animal imaging a 1.5 T with Sprague-Dawley rats, we observed a discernible negative enhancement effect in the liver. These findings indicate the promising potential of Fe@SiO2 nanowires as T2 CAs, with the possibility of tuning their size for optimized results.

Origin and Formation Mechanism of Carbon Shell-Encapsulated Metal Nanoparticles for Powerful Fuel Cell Durability

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) face technical issues of performance degradation due to catalyst dissolution and agglomeration in real-world operations. To address these challenges, intensive research has been recently conducted to introduce additional structural units on the catalyst surface. Among various concepts for surface modification, carbon shell encapsulation is known to be a promising strategy since the carbon shell can act as a protective layer for metal nanoparticles. As an interesting approach to form carbon shells on catalyst surfaces, the precursor ligand-induced formation is preferred due to its facile synthesis and tunable control over the carbon shell porosity. However, the origin of the carbon source and the carbon shell formation mechanism have not been studied in depth yet. Herein, this study aims to investigate carbon sources through the use of different precursors and the introduction of new methodologies related to the ligand exchange phenomenon. Subsequently, we provide new insights into the carbon shell formation mechanism using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Finally, the thermal stability and electrochemical durability of carbon shells are thoroughly investigated through in situ transmission electron microscopy (in situ TEM) and accelerated durability tests.

A State-of-the-Art Systemic Review on Selenium Nanoparticles: Mechanisms and Factors Influencing Biogenesis and Its Potential Applications

Selenium is a trace element required for the active function of numerous enzymes and various physiological processes. In recent years, selenium nanoparticles draw the attention of scientists and researchers because of its multifaceted uses. The process involved in chemically synthesized SeNPs has been found to be hazardous in nature, which has paved the way for safe and ecofriendly SeNPs to be developed in order to achieve sustainability. In comparison to chemical synthesis, SeNPs can be synthesized more safely and with greater flexibility utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants. This review focused on the synthesis of SeNPs utilizing bacteria, fungi, and plants; the mechanisms involved in SeNP synthesis; and the effect of various abiotic factors on SeNP synthesis and morphological characteristics. This article discusses the synergies of SeNP synthesis via biological routes, which can help future researchers to synthesize SeNPs with more precision and employ them in desired fields.

Advances in Phytonanotechnology: A Plant-Mediated Green Synthesis of Metal Nanoparticles Using Phyllanthus Plant Extracts and Their Antimicrobial and Anticancer Applications

Nanoparticles and nanotechnology developments continue to advance the livelihood of humankind. However, health challenges due to microorganisms and cancerous cells continue to threaten many people's lives globally. Therefore, new technological interventions are of great importance. The phytochemicals present in medicinal plants are suggested as biocompatible, cost-effective, and regenerative sources that can be utilized for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Different plant extracts with various phytochemical constituents can form nanoparticles with specific shapes, sizes, and optical properties. This review focuses on advances in green nanotechnology and provides details on reliable synthetic routes toward medically and biocompatible relevant metallic nanoparticles. We cover a wide range of applications that use phytonanoparticles with an in-depth look at what makes these materials interesting. The study also provides details of the literature on the interventions made in phytonanotechnology for the production of plant-mediated synthesis and capped metallic nanoparticles and their applications in various industries. It was observed that a variety of plants have been well studied, and detailed findings have been reported; however, the study of Phyllanthus is still in its early stages, and more needs to be uncovered.

Facile synthesis of PEG-glycerol coated bimetallic FePt nanoparticle as highly efficient electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation

Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has shown excellent growth as an alternative candidate for energy sources to substitute fossil fuels. However, developing cost-effective and highly durable catalysts with a facile synthesis method is still challenging. In this prospect, a facile strategy is used for the preparation of hydrophilic Fe-Pt nanoparticle catalyst via a polyethylene glycol-glycerol route to utilize the advantages of nanostructured surfaces. The synthesized electrocatalysts are characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM, EDS and FTIR to confirm their structure, morphology, composition, and surface functionalization. The performance of the catalysts towards methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in both acidic and alkaline media. The Fe-Pt bimetallic catalyst exhibits better current density of 36.36 mA cm-2 in acidic medium than in alkali medium (12.52 mA cm-2). However, the high If/Ib ratio of 1.9 in alkali medium signifies better surface cleaning/regenerating capability of catalyst. Moreover, the catalyst possessed superior cyclic stability of ~ 80% in the alkaline electrolyte which is 1.6 times higher than in the acidic one. The better stability and poison tolerance capacity of catalyst in alkaline media is attributed to the OH- ions provided by the electrolyte which interact with the metal species to form M-(OH)x and reversibly release OH- and regenerate metal surface for further oxidation reactions. But synergism provided by Fe and Pt gives better activity in acidic electrolyte as Pt is favourable catalyst for dehydrogenation of methanol in acidic medium. This study will be useful for designing anodic electrocatalysts for MOR.

Metallo-Surfactant assisted silver nanoparticles: A new approach for the colorimetric detection of amino acids

In this study, we report a new class of metallo-surfactant assisted silver nanoparticle produced by reduction process via AgNO₃ solution and extract of Turnera Subulata (TS) in aqueous which act as reducing and metallo-surfactant [Co(ip)₂(C₁₂H₂₅NH₂)₂](ClO₄)₃ (ip = imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline) act as stabilizing agent. In this study the silver nanoparticles produced using Turnera Subulata extract has showed yellowish brown color formation and an absorption peak at 421 nm signaling the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles. The presence of functional groups in the plant extracts were identified by FTIR analysis. In addition, the effects of ratio, changing the concentration of the metallo surfactant, TS plant leave extract, metal precursors, and pH of the medium have been investigated on the scale of the Ag nanoparticles. Spherical shaped, crystalline in nature and ∼50 nm sized particles were recorded using TEM and DLS analysis. Furthermore, the mechanistic insights into cysteine and dopa detection by silver nanoparticles were investigated using HR-TEM analysis. This induces aggregation in stable silver nanoparticles owing to selective and strong interaction of -SH group of cysteine with silver nanoparticle surface. The biogenic Ag NPs are found to be highly sensitive to amino acids of dopa and cysteine with the diagnosis maximum for both amino acids as low as 0.9 µM (dopa) and 1 µM (cysteine) under optimized conditions.

Thin film epitaxial [111] Co[Formula: see text]Pt[Formula: see text]: structure, magnetisation, and spin polarisation

Ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are of interest in spintronics and superconducting spintronics. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be achieved in thin ferromagnetic multilayer structures, when the anisotropy is driven by carefully engineered interfaces. Devices with multiple interfaces are disadvantageous for our application in superconducting spintronics, where the current perpendicular to plane is affected by the interfaces. Robust intrinsic PMA can be achieved in certain Co[Formula: see text]Pt[Formula: see text] alloys and compounds at any thickness, without increasing the number of interfaces. Here, we grow equiatomic Co[Formula: see text]Pt[Formula: see text] and report a comprehensive study on the structural, magnetic, and spin-polarisation properties in the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] ordered compounds. Primarily, interest in Co[Formula: see text]Pt[Formula: see text] has been in the [Formula: see text] crystal structure, where layers of Pt and Co are stacked alternately in the [100] direction. There has been less work on [Formula: see text] crystal structure, where the stacking is in the [111] direction. For the latter [Formula: see text] crystal structure, we find magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the film plane. For the former [Formula: see text] crystal structure, the magnetic anisotropy is perpendicular to the [100] plane, which is neither in-plane or out-of-plane in our samples. We obtain a value for the ballistic spin polarisation of the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] Co[Formula: see text]Pt[Formula: see text] to be [Formula: see text].

Creation of a Field-Induced Co(II) Single-Ion Magnet by Doping into a Zn(II) Diamagnetic Metal-Organic Framework

The combination of single-ion magnets (SIMs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is expected to produce new quantum materials. The principal issue to be solved in this regard is the development of new strategies for the synthesis of SIM-MOFs. This work demonstrates a new simple strategy for the synthesis of SIM-MOFs where a diamagnetic MOF is used as the framework into which the SIM sites are doped. 1, 0.5, and 0.2 mol% of the Co(II) ions are doped into the Zn(II) sites of [CH6 N3 ][ZnII (HCOO)3 ]. The doped Co(II) sites in the MOFs perform as SIM with a positive D term of zero-field splitting. The longest magnetic relaxation time is 150 ms (0.2 mol% Co) at 1.8 K under a static field of 0.1 T. Temperature dependency of the relaxation time suggests suppressing magnetic relaxation by reduction of spin-spin interaction upon doping in the rigid framework. Thus, this work represents a proof of concept for the creation of a single-ion doped magnet in the MOF. This simple synthetic strategy will be widely applied for the creation of quantum magnetic materials.

Highly Selective Synthesis of Monoclinic-Phased Platinum-Tellurium Nanotrepang for Direct Formic Acid Oxidation Catalysis

Designing efficient formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) catalysts with remarkable membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance in a direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) medium is significant yet challenging. Herein, we report that the monoclinic-phased platinum-tellurium nanotrepang (m-PtTe NT) can be adopted as a highly active, selective, and stable FAOR catalyst with a desirable direct reaction pathway. The m-PtTe NT exhibits the high specific and mass activities of 6.78 mA cm^-2 and 3.2 A mg_Pt^-1, respectively, which are 35.7/22.9, 2.8/2.6, and 3.9/2.9 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, rhombohedral-phased Pt₂Te₃ NT (r-Pt₂Te₃ NT), and trigonal-phased PtTe₂ NT (t-PtTe₂ NT), respectively. Simultaneously, the highest reaction tendency for the direct FAOR pathway and the best tolerance to poisonous CO intermediate can also be realized by m-PtTe NT. More importantly, even in a single-cell medium, the m-PtTe NT can display a much higher MEA power density (171.4 mW cm^-2) and stability (53.2% voltage loss after 5660 s) than those of commercial Pt/C, demonstrating the great potential in operating DFAFC device. The in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy jointly demonstrate that the unique nanostructure of m-PtTe NT can effectively optimize dehydrogenation steps and inhibit the CO intermediate adsorption, as well as promote the oxidation of noxious CO intermediate, thus achieving the great improvement of FAOR activity, poisoning tolerance, and stability. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the direct pathway is the most favorable on m-PtTe NT than r-Pt₂Te₃ NT and t-PtTe₂ NT. The higher activation energy to produce CO and the relatively weaker binding with CO of m-PtTe NT result in the better CO tolerance. This work achieves remarkable FAOR and MEA performances of advanced Pt-based anodic catalysts for DFAFCs via a phase engineering strategy.

In Situ and Emerging Transmission Electron Microscopy for Catalysis Research

Catalysts are the primary facilitator in many dynamic processes. Therefore, a thorough understanding of these processes has vast implications for a myriad of energy systems. The scanning/transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) is a powerful tool not only for atomic-scale characterization but also in situ catalytic experimentation. Techniques such as liquid and gas phase electron microscopy allow the observation of catalysts in an environment conducive to catalytic reactions. Correlated algorithms can greatly improve microscopy data processing and expand multidimensional data handling. Furthermore, new techniques including 4D-STEM, atomic electron tomography, cryogenic electron microscopy, and monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) push the boundaries of our comprehension of catalyst behavior. In this review, we discuss the existing and emergent techniques for observing catalysts using S/TEM. Challenges and opportunities highlighted aim to inspire and accelerate the use of electron microscopy to further investigate the complex interplay of catalytic systems.

Metal-Ligand Interactions and Their Roles in Controlling Nanoparticle Formation and Functions

ConspectusFunctional nanoparticles (NPs) have been studied extensively in the past decades for their unique nanoscale properties and their promising applications in advanced nanosciences and nanotechnologies. One critical component of studying these NPs is to prepare monodisperse NPs so that their physical and chemical properties can be tuned and optimized. Solution phase reactions have provided the most reliable processes for fabricating such monodisperse NPs in which metal-ligand interactions play essential roles in the synthetic controls. These interactions are also key to stabilizing the preformed NPs for them to show the desired electronic, magnetic, photonic, and catalytic properties. In this Account, we summarize some representative organic bipolar ligands that have recently been explored to control NP formation and NP functions. These include aliphatic acids, alkylphosphonic acids, alkylamines, alkylphosphines, and alkylthiols. This ligand group covers metal-ligand interactions via covalent, coordination, and electrostatic bonds that are most commonly employed to control NP sizes, compositions, shapes, and properties. The metal-ligand bonding effects on NP nucleation rate and growth can now be more thoroughly investigated by in situ spectroscopic and theoretical studies. In general, to obtain the desired NP size and monodispersity requires rational control of the metal/ligand ratios, concentrations, and reaction temperatures in the synthetic solutions. In addition, for multicomponent NPs, the binding strength of ligands to various metal surfaces needs to be considered in order to prepare these NPs with predesigned compositions. The selective ligand binding onto certain facets of NPs is also key to anisotropic growth of NPs, as demonstrated in the synthesis of one-dimensional nanorods and nanowires. The effects of metal-ligand interactions on NP functions are discussed in two aspects, electrochemical catalysis for CO₂ reduction and electronic transport across NP assemblies. We first highlight recent advances in using surface ligands to promote the electrochemical reduction of CO₂. Several mechanisms are discussed, including the modification of the catalyst surface environment, electron transfer through the metal-organic interface, and stabilization of the CO₂ reduction intermediates, all of which facilitate selective CO₂ reduction. These strategies lead to better understanding of molecular level control of catalysis for further catalyst optimization. Metal-ligand interaction in magnetic NPs can also be used to control tunneling magnetoresistance properties across NPs in NP assemblies by tuning NP interparticle spacing and surface spin polarization. In all, metal-ligand interactions have yielded particularly promising directions for tuning CO₂ reduction selectivity and for optimizing nanoelectronics, and the concepts can certainly be extended to rationalize NP engineering at atomic/molecular precision for the fabrication of sensitive functional devices that will be critical for many nanotechnological applications.

Manipulating morphology and composition in colloidal heterometallic nanopods and nanodendrites

Branched Pt nanoparticles represent an exciting class of nanomaterials with high surface areas suitable for applications in electrocatalysis. Introducing a second metal can enhance performance and reduce cost. External factors such as capping agents and temperature have been used to offer insights into nanopod formation and to encourage their kinetic evolution. More recently, nanodendrites have been reported, though synthesis has generally been empirical; making controlled variation of morphology while maintaining bimetallic composition an elusive target. We report the combination of Pt with Fe under a range of conditions, yielding individually bimetallic nanoparticles whose construction sheds new light on nanopod and/or nanodendrite formation. Fine control of metal precursor reduction through modulating capping agents, reagents, and temperature initially directs nanopod synthesis. Morphology control is retained while composition is then varied from Pt-rich to Pt-poor. Additionally, conditions are identified that promote the collision-based branching of nanopod arms. This allows synthesis to be redirected for the selective growth of compositionally controlled nanodendrites in predictable fashion.

Magnetization of amorphous FeOOH chrysanthemum-like nanosheets under ambient conditions

The conversion of paramagnetic solid iron oxides to magnetic iron oxides has drawn considerable interest, but it's still challenging to carry out without heat treatment or irradiation. In this work, solid amorphous iron oxide chrysanthemum-like nanosheets synthesized by a smart redox strategy at the interface of a soap-free emulsion are magnetized at room temperature and under ambient pressure. An amorphous FeOOH hollow shell with needles towards water is produced by the reaction of cumyl hydroperoxide (CHPO) and iron(II) sulfate (FeSO₄) at the interface of the emulsion generated by ultrasound and torn up into chrysanthemum-like nanosheets simultaneously. With the presence of noble metal ions, such as Au³⁺, the magnetization of the nanosheets was carried out as soon as sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) was introduced into the dispersion. The magnetic chrysanthemum-like nanosheets present saturation magnetization (Ms) of 32 emu g^-1 and can be placed linearly in a magnetic field.

Sericin mediated gold/silver bimetallic nanoparticles and exploration of its multi-therapeutic efficiency and photocatalytic degradation potential

The current investigation aimed at bimetallic gold-silver nanoparticles (Au/Ag NPs), here called BM-GS NPs, synthesis using sericin protein as the reducing agent in an easy, cost-effective, and sustainable way. The obtained BM-GS NPs were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Zeta potential, X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Thermogravimetric analysis followed by evaluation of its multitherapeutic and photocatalytic degradation potentials. The TEM analysis revealed its spherical nature and the EDS result displayed the presence of both Ag and Au elements, confirming the synthesis of BM-GS NPs. The XRD pattern verified the crystalline nature of the nanoparticles (NPs). The DLS analysis showed an average size of 86.08 d nm and the zeta potential showed a highly negative value (-26.3 mV) which specifies that the generated bimetallic NPs are stable. The BM-GS NPs exhibited positive wound healing potential (with 63.38% of wound closure rate at 25 μg/ml, as compared to 54.42% by the untreated control) with very negligible toxicity effect on the cell viability of the normal keratinocyte cells. It also demonstrated promising antioxidant properties with 65.00%, 69.23%, and 63.03% activity at 100 μg/ml concentration for ABTS (2, 2-azinobis) (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), DPPH (1, 1 diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and SOD (superoxide dismutase enzyme) assays respectively, antidiabetic potential (with a significantly high α-glucosidase inhibition potential of 99.69% at 10μg/ml concentration and 62.11% of α-amylase enzyme inhibition at 100 μg/ml concentration) and moderate tyrosinase inhibitory potential (with 17.09% at 100 μg/ml concentration). Besides, it displayed reasonable antibacterial potential with the diameter of zone of inhibition ranging between 10.89 and 12.39 mm. Further, its antibacterial mode of action reveals that its effects could be due to being very smaller, the NPs could have penetrated inside the cellular membrane thereby causing rupture and damage to the interior materials leading to cellular lysis. The photocatalytic evaluation showed that synthesized BM-GS NPs have the efficiency of degrading methylene blue dye by 34.70% within 3 h of treatment. The above findings revealed the multi-therapeutic efficacy of the sericin globular protein-mediated BM-GS NPs and its potential future applications in the cosmetics and food sector and environmental contamination management industries.

Periodic Assembly of Diblock Pt-Au Heteronanowires for the Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Periodic assembly of heterogeneous nanoparticles provides a strategy for integrating distinct nanocatalyst blocks where their synergic effects can be explored for diverse applications. To achieve the synergistic enhancement, an intimate clean interface is preferred which however is usually plagued by the bulky surfactant molecules used in the synthesis and assembly process. Herein, we showed the creation of one-dimensional Pt-Au nanowires (NWs) with periodic alternating Pt and Au nanoblocks, by assembling Pt-Au Janus nanoparticles with the assistance of peptide T7 (Ac-TLTTLTN-CONH₂). It is demonstrated that the Pt-Au NWs showed much-improved performance in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), exhibiting 5.3 times higher specific activity and 2.5 times higher mass activity than the current state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. In addition, the periodic heterostructure also improves the stability of Pt-Au NWs in the MOR, where the Pt-Au NWs retained 93.9% of their initial mass activity much higher than commercial Pt/C (30.6%).

The highest oxidation state observed in graphene-supported sub-nanometer iron oxide clusters

Size-selected iron oxide nanoclusters are outstanding candidates for technological-oriented applications due to their high efficiency-to-cost ratio. However, despite many theoretical studies, experimental works on their oxidation mechanism are still limited to gas-phase clusters. Herein we investigate the oxidation of graphene-supported size-selected Fe_n clusters by means of high-resolution X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. We show a dependency of the core electron Fe 2p_3/2 binding energy of metallic and oxidized clusters on the cluster size. Binding energies are also linked to chemical reactivity through the asymmetry parameter which is related to electron density of states at the Fermi energy. Upon oxidation, iron atoms in clusters reach the oxidation state Fe(II) and the absence of other oxidation states indicates a Fe-to-O ratio close to 1:1, in agreement with previous theoretical calculations and gas-phase experiments. Such knowledge can provide a basis for a better understanding of the behavior of iron oxide nanoclusters as supported catalysts.

Surface engineering of colloidal nanoparticles

Synthesis of engineered colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) with delicate surface characteristics leads to well-defined physicochemical properties and contributes to multifunctional applications. Surface engineering of colloidal NPs can improve their stability in diverse solvents by inhibiting the interparticle attractive forces, thus providing a prerequisite for further particle manipulation, fabrication of the following materials and biological applications. During the last decades, surface engineering methods for colloidal NPs have been well-developed by numerous researchers. However, accurate control of surface properties is still an important topic. The emerging DNA/protein nanotechnology offers additional possibility of surface modification of NPs and programmable particle self-assembly. Here, we first briefly review the recent progress in surface engineering of colloidal NPs, focusing on the improved stability by grafting suitable small molecules, polymers or biological macromolecules. We then present the practical strategies for nucleic acid surface encoding of NPs and subsequent programmable assembly. Various exciting applications of these unique materials are summarized with a specific focus on the cellular uptake, bio-toxicity, imaging and diagnosis of colloidal NPs in vivo. With the growing interest in colloidal NPs in nano-biological research, we expect that this review can play an instructive role in engineering the surface properties for desired applications.

Interface-related phenomena in epitaxial complex oxide ferroics across different thin film platforms: opportunities and challenges

Interfaces in complex oxides give rise to fascinating new physical phenomena arising from the interconnected spin, lattice, charge and orbital degrees of freedom. Most commonly, interfaces are engineered in epitaxial superlattice films. Of growing interest also are epitaxial vertically aligned nanocomposite films where interfaces form by self-assembly. These two thin film forms offer different capabilities for materials tuning and have been explored largely separately from one another. Ferroics (ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, multiferroic) are among the most fascinating phenomena to be manipulated using interface effects. Hence, in this review we compare and contrast the ferroic properties that arise in these two different film forms, highlighting exemplary materials combinations which demonstrate novel, enhanced and/or emergent ferroic functionalities. We discuss the origins of the observed functionalities and propose where knowledge can be translated from one materials form to another, to potentially produce new functionalities. Finally, for the two different film forms we present a perspective on underexplored/emerging research directions.

Shape-Controlled Synthesis of Platinum-Based Nanocrystals and Their Electrocatalytic Applications in Fuel Cells

To achieve environmentally benign energy conversion with the carbon neutrality target via electrochemical reactions, the innovation of electrocatalysts plays a vital role in the enablement of renewable resources. Nowadays, Pt-based nanocrystals (NCs) have been identified as one class of the most promising candidates to efficiently catalyze both the half-reactions in hydrogen- and hydrocarbon-based fuel cells. Here, we thoroughly discuss the key achievement in developing shape-controlled Pt and Pt-based NCs, and their electrochemical applications in fuel cells. We begin with a mechanistic discussion on how the morphology can be precisely controlled in a colloidal system, followed by highlighting the advanced development of shape-controlled Pt, Pt-alloy, Pt-based core@shell NCs, Pt-based nanocages, and Pt-based intermetallic compounds. We then select some case studies on models of typical reactions (oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode and small molecular oxidation reaction at the anode) that are enhanced by the shape-controlled Pt-based nanocatalysts. Finally, we provide an outlook on the potential challenges of shape-controlled nanocatalysts and envision their perspective with suggestions.

Anisotropic Heavy-Metal-Free Semiconductor Nanocrystals: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

Heavy-metal (Cd, Hg, and Pb)-containing semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) have been explored widely due to their unique optical and electrical properties. However, the toxicity risks of heavy metals can be a drawback of heavy-metal-containing NCs in some applications. Anisotropic heavy-metal-free semiconductor NCs are desirable replacements and can be realized following the establishment of anisotropic growth mechanisms. These anisotropic heavy-metal-free semiconductor NCs can possess lower toxicity risks, while still exhibiting unique optical and electrical properties originating from both the morphological and compositional anisotropy. As a result, they are promising light-emitting materials in use various applications. In this review, we provide an overview on the syntheses, properties, and applications of anisotropic heavy-metal-free semiconductor NCs. In the first section, we discuss hazards of heavy metals and introduce the typical heavy-metal-containing and heavy-metal-free NCs. In the next section, we discuss anisotropic growth mechanisms, including solution-liquid-solid (SLS), oriented attachment, ripening, templated-assisted growth, and others. We discuss mechanisms leading both to morphological anisotropy and to compositional anisotropy. Examples of morphological anisotropy include growth of nanorods (NRs)/nanowires (NWs), nanotubes, nanoplatelets (NPLs)/nanosheets, nanocubes, and branched structures. Examples of compositional anisotropy, including heterostructures and core/shell structures, are summarized. Third, we provide insights into the properties of anisotropic heavy-metal-free NCs including optical polarization, fast electron transfer, localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR), and so on, which originate from the NCs' anisotropic morphologies and compositions. Finally, we summarize some applications of anisotropic heavy-metal-free NCs including catalysis, solar cells, photodetectors, lighting-emitting diodes (LEDs), and biological applications. Despite the huge progress on the syntheses and applications of anisotropic heavy-metal-free NCs, some issues still exist in the novel anisotropic heavy-metal-free NCs and the corresponding energy conversion applications. Therefore, we also discuss the challenges of this field and provide possible solutions to tackle these challenges in the future.

Synthesis and Characterization of Stable Cu-Pt Nanoparticles under Reductive and Oxidative Conditions

We report a synthesis method for highly monodisperse Cu-Pt alloy nanoparticles. Small and large Cu-Pt particles with a Cu/Pt ratio of 1:1 can be obtained through colloidal synthesis at 300 °C. The fresh particles have a Pt-rich surface and a Cu-rich core and can be converted into an intermetallic phase after annealing at 800 °C under H₂. First, we demonstrated the stability of fresh particles under redox conditions at 400 °C, as the Pt-rich surface prevents substantial oxidation of Cu. Then, a combination of in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and CO oxidation measurements of the intermetallic CuPt phase before and after redox treatments at 800 °C showed promising activity and stability for CO oxidation. Full oxidation of Cu was prevented after exposure to O₂ at 800 °C. The activity and structure of the particles were only slightly changed after exposure to O₂ at 800 °C and were recovered after re-reduction at 800 °C. Additionally, the intermetallic CuPt phase showed enhanced catalytic properties compared to the fresh particles with a Pt-rich surface or pure Pt particles of the same size. Thus, the incorporation of Pt with Cu does not lead to a rapid deactivation and degradation of the material, as seen with other bimetallic systems. This work provides a synthesis route to control the design of Cu-Pt nanostructures and underlines the promising properties of these alloys (intermetallic and non-intermetallic) for heterogeneous catalysis.

BioMOF-Based Anti-Cancer Drug Delivery Systems

A variety of nanomaterials have been developed specifically for biomedical applications, such as drug delivery in cancer treatment. These materials involve both synthetic and natural nanoparticles and nanofibers of varying dimensions. The efficacy of a drug delivery system (DDS) depends on its biocompatibility, intrinsic high surface area, high interconnected porosity, and chemical functionality. Recent advances in metal-organic framework (MOF) nanostructures have led to the achievement of these desirable features. MOFs consist of metal ions and organic linkers that are assembled in different geometries and can be produced in 0, 1, 2, or 3 dimensions. The defining features of MOFs are their outstanding surface area, interconnected porosity, and variable chemical functionality, which enable an endless range of modalities for loading drugs into their hierarchical structures. MOFs, coupled with biocompatibility requisites, are now regarded as highly successful DDSs for the treatment of diverse diseases. This review aims to present the development and applications of DDSs based on chemically-functionalized MOF nanostructures in the context of cancer treatment. A concise overview of the structure, synthesis, and mode of action of MOF-DDS is provided.

Metallic nanoparticles as effective sensors of bio-molecules

This work describes biologically important nanostructures of metals (AgNPs, AuNPs, and PtNPs) and metal oxides (Cu₂ONPs, CuONSs, γ-Fe₂O₃NPs, ZnONPs, ZnONPs-GS, anatase-TiO₂NPs, and rutile-TiO₂NPs) synthesized by different methods (wet-chemical, electrochemical, and green-chemistry methods). The nanostructures were characterized by molecular spectroscopic methods, including scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Raman scattering spectroscopy (RS), and infrared light spectroscopy (IR). Then, a peptide (bombesin, BN) was adsorbed onto the surface of these nanostructures from an aqueous solution with pH of 7 that did not contain surfactants. Adsorption was monitored using surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) to determine the influence of the nature of the metal surface and surface evolution on peptide geometry. Information from the SERS studies was compared with information on the biological activity of the peptide. The SERS enhancement factor was determined for each of the metallic surfaces.

Electric, magnetic, and shear field-directed assembly of inorganic nanoparticles

Ordered assemblies of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have shown tremendous potential for wide applications due to their unique collective properties, which differ from those of individual NPs. Various assembly methods, such as external field-directed assembly, interfacial assembly, template assembly, biomolecular recognition-mediated assembly, confined assembly, and others, have been employed to generate ordered inorganic NP assemblies with hierarchical structures. Among them, the external field-directed assembly method is particularly fascinating, as it can remotely assemble NPs into well-ordered superstructures. Moreover, external fields (e.g., electric, magnetic, and shear fields) can introduce a local and/or global field intensity gradient, resulting in an additional force on NPs to drive their rotation and/or translation. Therefore, the external field-directed assembly of NPs becomes a robust method to fabricate well-defined functional materials with the desired optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, which have various applications in catalysis, sensing, disease diagnosis, energy conversion/storage, photonics, nano-floating-gate memory, and others. In this review, the effects of an electric field, magnetic field, and shear field on the organization of inorganic NPs are highlighted. The methods for controlling the well-ordered organization of inorganic NPs at different scales and their advantages are reviewed. Finally, future challenges and perspectives in this field are discussed.

Colloidal Approaches to Zinc Oxide Nanocrystals

Zinc oxide is an extensively studied semiconductor with a wide band gap in the near-UV. Its many interesting properties have found use in optics, electronics, catalysis, sensing, as well as biomedicine and microbiology. In the nanoscale regime the functional properties of ZnO can be precisely tuned by manipulating its size, shape, chemical composition (doping), and surface states. In this review, we focus on the colloidal synthesis of ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) and provide a critical analysis of the synthetic methods currently available for preparing ZnO colloids. First, we outline key thermodynamic considerations for the nucleation and growth of colloidal nanoparticles, including an analysis of different reaction methodologies and of the role of dopant ions on nanoparticle formation. We then comprehensively review and discuss the literature on ZnO NC systems, including reactions in polar solvents that traditionally occur at low temperatures upon addition of a base, and high temperature reactions in organic, nonpolar solvents. A specific section is dedicated to doped NCs, highlighting both synthetic aspects and structure-property relationships. The versatility of these methods to achieve morphological and compositional control in ZnO is explicated. We then showcase some of the key applications of ZnO NCs, both as suspended colloids and as deposited coatings on supporting substrates. Finally, a critical analysis of the current state of the art for ZnO colloidal NCs is presented along with existing challenges and future directions for the field.

Two-step single-reactor synthesis of oleic acid- or undecylenic acid-stabilized magnetic nanoparticles by thermal decomposition

Different iron oxides (i.e., magnetite, maghemite, goethite, wüstite), particularly nanosized particles, show distinct effects on living organisms. Thus, it is of primary importance for their biomedical applications that the morphology and phase-structural state of these materials are investigated. The aim of this work was to obtain magnetic nanoparticles in a single reactor using Fe(III) acetylacetonate as the initial precursor for the synthesis of Fe(III) oleate or Fe(III) undecylate followed by their thermolysis in situ. We proposed a new approach, according to which the essential magnetite precursor (a complex salt of higher acids - Fe(III) alkanoates) is obtained in a solvent with a high boiling point via displacement reaction of acetylacetone with a higher acid from Fe(III) acetylacetonate during its elimination from the reaction mixture under vacuum conditions. Magnetic nanoparticles (NPM) were characterized in terms of morphology, hydrodynamic diameter, and composition via several techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The effect of unsaturated oleic (OA) and undecylenic (UA) acids, which are both used as a reagent and as a nanoparticle stabilizer, as well as the influence of their ratio to Fe(III) acetylacetonate on the properties of particles were investigated. Stable dispersions of NPM were obtained in 1-octadecene within the OA or UA ratio from 3.3 mol to 1 mol of acetylacetonate and up to 5.5 mol/mol. Below the mentioned limit, NPM dispersions were colloidally unstable, and at higher ratios no NPM were formed which could be precipitated by an applied magnetic field. Monodisperse nanoparticles of iron oxides were synthesized with a diameter of 8-13 nm and 11-16 nm using OA and UA, respectively. The organic shell that enables the particle to be dispersed in organic media, in the case of oleic acid, covers their inorganic core only with a layer similar to the monomolecular layer, whereas the undecylenic acid forms a thicker layer, which is 65% of the particle mass. The result is a significantly different resistance to oxidation of the nanoparticle inorganic cores. The core of the particles synthesized using oleic acid is composed of more than 90% of maghemite. When undecylenic acid is used for the synthesis, the core is composed of 75% of magnetite.

New aspects of lipopeptide-incorporated nanoparticle synthesis and recent advancements in biomedical and environmental sciences: a review

The toxicity of metal nanoparticles has introduced promising research in the current scenario since an enormous number of people have been potentially facing this problem in the world. The extensive attention on green nanoparticle synthesis has been focussed on as a vital step in bio-nanotechnology to improve biocompatibility, biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and huge potential utilization in various environmental and clinical assessments. Inherent influence on the study of green nanoparticles plays a key role to synthesize the controlled and surface-influenced molecule by altering the physical, chemical, and biological assets with the provision of various precursors, templating/co-templating agents, and supporting solvents. However, in this article, the dominant characteristics of several kinds of lipopeptide biosurfactants are discussed to execute a critical study of factors affecting synthesis procedure and applications. The recent approaches of metal, metal oxide, and composite nanomaterial synthesis have been deliberated as well as the elucidation of the reaction mechanism. Furthermore, this approach shows remarkable boosts in the production of nanoparticles with the very less employed harsh and hazardous processes as compared to chemical or physical method-based nanoparticle synthesis. This study also shows that the advances in strain selection for green nanoparticle production could be a worthwhile and strong economical approach in futuristic medical science research.

Terahertz permeability of hard ferromagnetic L10-FePt alloy nanowire

It is commonly thought that ferromagnetic materials can not find applications in terahertz domain because of their very weak dynamic magnetic responses. However, our results in this paper show that the terahertz (THz) permeability of an isolated L1₀-FePt alloy nanowire with super hard ferromagnetic properties is significant at 0.348 THz, as long as it is at proper remanent states (for instance, Mr/Ms = 1.0), which are ever thought only possible in some metamaterials. Compared to the gigahertz (GHz) permeability of single Fe nanowire, the THz permeability spectra of L1₀-FePt are shown obviously different. Unusual negative imaginary parts of permeability (μ″ < 0) is found related to the equivalent negative damping constant, which is explained from the perspective of abnormal precession of natural resonance at THz for FePt nanowire.

Coupled plasmons in aluminum nanoparticle superclusters

Metallic nanoparticles can self-assemble into highly ordered superclusters for potential applications in optics and catalysis. Here, using first-principles quantum mechanical calculations, we investigate plasmon coupling in superclusters made of aluminum nanoparticles. More specifically, we study/compare the plasmon coupling in close-pack FCC (face-centered-cubic) and non-close-pack BCC (body-centered-cubic) superclusters. We demonstrate that the optical properties of these clusters can be fine-tuned with respect to the packing arrangement. As a key result of this work, plasmon coupling is found to be enhanced (diminished) in FCC (BCC) superclusters due to constructive (destructive) plasmon coupling. Our quantum calculations would help in the design of Al-based superclusters beneficial for plasmonics applications.

Recent insights into metallic nanoparticles in shelf-life extension of agrifoods: Properties, green synthesis, and major applications

Nanotechnology emerged as a revolutionary technology in various fields of applied sciences, such as biomedical engineering and food technology. The pivotal roles of nanocompounds have been explored in various fields, such as food protection, preservation, and enhancement of shelf life. In this sequence, metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) are proven to be useful in developing products with antimicrobial activity and subsequently improve the shelf life of agrifoods. The major application of MNPs has been observed in the packaging industry due to the combining ability of biopolymers with MNPs. In recent years, various metal nanoparticles have been explored to formulate various active food packaging materials. However, the method of production and the need for risk evaluation are still a topic of discussion among researchers around the world. In general, MNPs are synthesized by various chemical and physical means, which may pose variable health risks. To overcome such issues, the green synthesis of MNPs using microbial and plant extracts has been proposed by various researchers. In this review, we aimed at exploring the green synthesis of MNPs, their properties and characterization, various ways of utilizing MNPs to extend their shelf life, and, most importantly, the risk associated with these along with their quality and safety considerations.

Review on Magnetism in Catalysis: From Theory to PEMFC Applications of 3d Metal Pt-Based Alloys

The relationship between magnetism and catalysis has been an important topic since the mid-20th century. At present time, the scientific community is well aware that a full comprehension of this relationship is required to face modern challenges, such as the need for clean energy technology. The successful use of (para-)magnetic materials has already been corroborated in catalytic processes, such as hydrogenation, Fenton reaction and ammonia synthesis. These catalysts typically contain transition metals from the first to the third row and are affected by the presence of an external magnetic field. Nowadays, it appears that the most promising approach to reach the goal of a more sustainable future is via ferromagnetic conducting catalysts containing open-shell metals (i.e., Fe, Co and Ni) with extra stabilization coming from the presence of an external magnetic field. However, understanding how intrinsic and extrinsic magnetic features are related to catalysis is still a complex task, especially when catalytic performances are improved by these magnetic phenomena. In the present review, we introduce the relationship between magnetism and catalysis and outline its importance in the production of clean energy, by describing the representative case of 3d metal Pt-based alloys, which are extensively investigated and exploited in PEM fuel cells.

Iron-Based Ceramic Composite Nanomaterials for Magnetic Fluid Hyperthermia and Drug Delivery

Because of the unique physicochemical properties of magnetic iron-based nanoparticles, such as superparamagnetism, high saturation magnetization, and high effective surface area, they have been applied in biomedical fields such as diagnostic imaging, disease treatment, and biochemical separation. Iron-based nanoparticles have been used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to produce clearer and more detailed images, and they have therapeutic applications in magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH). In recent years, researchers have used clay minerals, such as ceramic materials with iron-based nanoparticles, to construct nanocomposite materials with enhanced saturation, magnetization, and thermal effects. Owing to their unique structure and large specific surface area, iron-based nanoparticles can be homogenized by adding different proportions of ceramic minerals before and after modification to enhance saturation magnetization. In this review, we assess the potential to improve the magnetic properties of iron-based nanoparticles and in the preparation of multifunctional composite materials through their combination with ceramic materials. We demonstrate the potential of ferromagnetic enhancement and multifunctional composite materials for MRI diagnosis, drug delivery, MFH therapy, and cellular imaging applications.
