Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS To compare the effects of repeated low-level red light (RLRL) treatment on axial length growth and refractive error changes in myopic and premyopic children. METHODS Subjects were assigned randomly to four subgroups: myopia-RLRL group (M-RL), myopia-control group (M-C), premyopia-RLRL group (PM-RL) and premyopia-control group (PM-C). Subjects in the RLRL group completed a 12-month treatment composed of a 3 min RLRL treatment session twice daily, with an interval of at least 4 hours, for 7 days per week. Visits were scheduled before and at 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, 9-month and 12-month follow-up after the treatment. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to compare the spherical equivalent refractive errors (SE) and axial length (AL) changes between the groups across the treatment period. RESULTS After 12 months of treatment, in the myopia group, SE and AL changes were -0.078±0.375 D and 0.033±0.123 mm for M-RL and -0.861±0.556 D and 0.415±0.171 mm for M-C; in the premyopia group, the progression of SE and AL was -0.181±0.417 D and 0.145±0.175 mm for PM-RL and -0.521±0.436 D and 0.292±0.128 mm for PM-C. PM-RL indicated a lower myopia incidence than PM-C (2.5% vs 19.4%). Additionally, the percentage of AL shortening in the M-RL was higher than that in the PM-RL before the 9-month follow-up. CONCLUSION RLRL effectively delayed myopia progression in children with myopia and reduced the incidence of myopia in premyopic children. Moreover, RLRL exhibited a stronger impact on myopic children compared with premyopic individuals.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the overall efficacy of outdoor interventions for myopia in children and adolescents, and to provide evidence for the prevention and control of myopia. Methods Randomized controlled trials of outdoor interventions for myopia in children and adolescents were identified using electronic databases and manual searches. The Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2) was used to assess risk of bias in randomized controlled trials. A mean difference (MD) and a risk ratio (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to combine effect sizes. A sensitivity analysis was performed for each outcome using a stepwise elimination method to assess whether the pooled results were significantly affected by individual studies. Results The analysis included seven randomized controlled trials involving a total of 9,437 subjects. The meta-analysis showed marked and statistically significant improvements in spherical equivalent refraction (MD = 0.19; 95% CI 0.14 to 0.25; p < 0.01), axial length (MD = -0.09; 95% CI -0.13 to -0.05; p < 0.01), and myopia incidence (RR = 0.84; 95% CI 0.78 to 0.91; p < 0.01) following outdoor interventions. Conclusion Outdoor interventions effectively contributed to the prevention and control of myopia in children and adolescents, positively impacting spherical equivalent refraction, axial length, and myopia incidence. Outdoor interventions were characterized by low risk and high therapeutic benefits and could serve as alternative or adjuvant approaches to medication for the treatment of myopia. Considering the advantages in terms of safety and efficacy, outdoor interventions may be considered as a preferred intervention for the treatment of myopia in children and adolescents, while susceptibility to diseases associated with sunlight, particularly UV exposure, must be taken into account. Abstract
Various studies have suggested several environmental, pharmacological, medical, and optical interventions and some are in use but their efficacy in myopia control may be transient, and the cellular, molecular, and biochemical mechanisms involved unclear. Daylight exposure is currently regarded as an effective and enduring strategy in the control of myopia development and progression. However, the mechanism behind the effect of outdoor exposure and its association with genetic predisposition and other relatively more significant environmental factors on myopia is still a conundrum. This review focuses on survey-based and intervention-based studies carried out to propose a mechanism that accounts for myopia development and important for its control.

Abstract
Purpose Myopia is a major global health issue, especially among children and adolescents. Understanding its traits and progression is vital for proper management and prevention. This study aimed to fill a gap in research by analyzing demographic and refractive data concerning myopia among children and adolescents in Croatia, with the goal of providing insights into myopia prevalence, progression rates, and associated risk factors within the Croatian population. Design This retrospective study utilized a comprehensive dataset from pediatric ophthalmology clinics at the University Eye Department, University Hospital "Sveti Duh," Zagreb, Croatia. The dataset included electronic medical records spanning from January 2008 to July 2023, encompassing demographic and refractive data. Methods Data analysis focused on individuals aged 4 to 18 years who were diagnosed with primary myopia and/or compound myopic astigmatism. Ophthalmic examinations, including visual acuity tests, cycloplegic refraction, and assessments for eye comorbidities, were conducted by experienced pediatric ophthalmologists. Statistical analysis, including t-tests, survival analysis, and logistic regression, was performed to assess myopia prevalence, progression rates, and associated factors. These analyses were adjusted for covariates such as age, parental myopia, and gender. Results The study included 895 individuals, 51 premyopes, 813 low myopes, and 31 high myopes. The average age of diagnosis was 11.37 ± 3.59 years for premyopes, 11.18 ± 3.53 years for low myopes, and 11.44 ± 4.35 years for high myopes. The fastest progression occurred in 2021 and 2022, -0.5 ± 0.12 D/y for premyopes and - 0.45 ± 0.1 D/y for low myopes. Premyopic progression to low myopia was associated with age 7-9 years (HR 2.42, 1.53 to 3.21) and both parents being myopic (HR 920.27. 850.16 to 950.53). Low myopic individuals with both myopic parents displayed the fastest 11-24 months after first visit progression rates, -0.69 (-0.52 to -0.87) D/y, while the 7-9 age group demonstrated -0.36 (-0.24 to -0.45) D/y. Low myopes aged 7-9 years with baseline SE between -6 D and -4 D were more strongly associated with ≤ - 0.5 D progression (OR = 2.0, 95% CI -1.00 to 2.39). Conclusion This study highlights the importance of environmental factors, genetics, and age in addressing myopia progression among Croatian youth, urging further research for effective local intervention strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of myopia control spectacle lenses (defocus incorporated multiple segments/DIMS) in slowing myopia progression among a diverse Central European paediatric population and investigate the contribution of baseline parameters on treatment outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This retrospective observational study included 62 individuals aged 4-17 years (mean±SD: 10.21±2.70) with progressing myopia but without ocular pathology with a range of -0.88 to -8.25 D spherical equivalent refraction (SER) (-3.73±1.56), coupled with astigmatism up to -3.25 D cylindrical. All participants were prescribed DIMS (Hoya MiyoSmart) spectacles. Key outcome variables were cycloplegic SER, measured for all participants and axial length (AL), assessed in a subset of patients, recorded at baseline, 6 months and 12 months. Quality of life assessments were conducted at baseline, at 2 weeks, and 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Additionally, parental myopic dioptre was recorded when applicable. RESULTS At the 12-month mark, myopia progression in patients (mean±SE: -0.40±0.05) mirrored findings from prior European DIMS studies, but with 50% of patients showing no progression. A multivariate analysis of covariance model revealed that baseline astigmatism and younger age adversely affected therapy outcomes in both SER and AL, while severe maternal myopia led to greater SER progression. In contrast, only young age but not astigmatism was associated with AL increase in a comparable group of children with myopia, part of the LIFE Child Study, wearing single-vision spectacles. Patients reported consistent satisfaction with treatment, with minimal side effects, which diminished over the year. CONCLUSION In the European population, astigmatism, young age and severe maternal myopia are risk factors for suboptimal outcomes following DIMS therapy. Further research is necessary to elucidate the impact of astigmatism on myopic defocus therapy.

Abstract
Recurrent 1q21.1 copy number variants (CNVs) have been associated with a wide spectrum of clinical features, ranging from normal phenotype to moderate intellectual disability, with congenital anomalies and dysmorphic features. They are often inherited from unaffected parents and the pathogenicity is difficult to assess. We describe the phenotypic and genotypic data for 34 probands carrying CNVs in the 1q21.1 chromosome region (24 duplications, 8 deletions and 2 triplications). We also reviewed 89 duplications, 114 deletions and 5 triplications described in the literature, at variable 1q21.1 locations. We aimed to identify the most highly associated clinical features to determine the phenotypic expression in affected individuals. Developmental delay or learning disabilities and neuropsychiatric disorders were common in patients with deletions, duplications and triplications of 1q21.1. Mild dysmorphic features common in these CNVs include a prominent forehead, widely spaced eyes and a broad nose. The CNVs were mostly inherited from apparently unaffected parents. Almost half of the CNVs were distal, overlapping with a common minimal region of 1.2 Mb. We delineated the clinical implications of 1q21.1 CNVs and confirmed that these CNVs are likely pathogenic, although subject to incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. Long-term follow-up should be performed to each newly diagnosed case, and prenatal genetic counseling cautiously discussed, as it remains difficult to predict the phenotype in the event of an antenatal diagnosis.

Abstract
Purpose: To comprehensively assess rebound effects by comparing myopia progression during atropine treatment and after discontinuation. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov was conducted up to 20 September 2023, using the keywords "myopia," "rebound," and "discontinue." Language restrictions were not applied, and reference lists were scrutinized for relevant studies. Our study selection criteria focused on randomized control trials and interventional studies involving children with myopia, specifically those treated with atropine or combination therapies for a minimum of 6 months, followed by a cessation period of at least 1 month. The analysis centered on reporting annual rates of myopia progression, considering changes in spherical equivalent (SE) or axial length (AL). Data extraction was performed by three independent reviewers, and heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics. A random-effects model was applied, and effect sizes were determined through weighted mean differences with 95% confidence intervals Our primary outcome was the evaluation of rebound effects on spherical equivalent or axial length. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on cessation and treatment durations, dosage levels, age, and baseline SE to provide a nuanced understanding of the data. Results: The analysis included 13 studies involving 2060 children. Rebound effects on SE were significantly higher at 6 months (WMD, 0.926 D/y; 95%CI, 0.288-1.563 D/y; p = .004) compared to 12 months (WMD, 0.268 D/y; 95%CI, 0.077-0.460 D/y; p = .006) after discontinuation of atropine. AL showed similar trends, with higher rebound effects at 6 months (WMD, 0.328 mm/y; 95%CI, 0.165-0.492 mm/y; p < .001) compared to 12 months (WMD, 0.121 mm/y; 95%CI, 0.02-0.217 mm/y; p = .014). Sensitivity analyses confirmed consistent results. Shorter treatment durations, younger age, and higher baseline SE levels were associated with more pronounced rebound effects. Transitioning or stepwise cessation still caused rebound effects but combining optical therapy with atropine seemed to prevent the rebound effects. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis highlights the temporal and dose-dependent rebound effects after discontinuing atropine. Individuals with shorter treatment durations, younger age, and higher baseline SE tend to experience more significant rebound effects. Further research on the rebound effect is warranted. Abstract
Background This study aims to assess and compare the impact of Orthokeratology Double Reservoir Lens (DRL) versus Single Vision Lenses (SVL) on axial elongation and anterior chamber biometric parameters in myopic children over a 6- and 12-month treatment period in France. Methods A retrospective study involving 48 patients aged 7 to 17 years, who underwent either orthokeratology treatment or single-vision spectacle correction, was conducted. Changes in refractive error, axial length, and anterior chamber depth were examined. Results Twenty-five patients comprised the Orthokeratology (OK) group, while twenty-three were in the control group (single-vision spectacle group). Significant increases in mean axial length were observed over time in both the control (0.12 ± 0.13 mm and 0.20 ± 0.17 mm after 6 and 12 months, respectively; F (2,28.9) = 27.68, p < 0.001) and OK groups (0.02 ± 0.07 mm and 0.06 ± 0.13 mm after 6 and 12 months, respectively; F (2,29.1) = 5.30, p = 0.023). No statistically significant differences in axial length were found between male and female children (p > 0.620). Age-specific analysis revealed no significant axial elongation after 12 months in the 14-17 years group in the OK group. Anterior biometric data analysis at 6 and 12 months showed statistical significance only for the DRL group. Conclusion Orthokeratology resulted in an 86 and 70% reduction in axial elongation after 6 and 12 months of lens wear, respectively, compared to the single-vision spectacles group. Myopia progression was more pronounced in younger children, underscoring the importance of initiating myopia control strategies at early ages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mutations in the L/M cone opsin gene array cause abnormally high perceived retinal contrast and the development of myopia. Environmental factors may also lead to high visual contrast and cause myopia. Diffusion optics technology (DOT) lenses are designed to reduce contrast signalling in the retina and slow myopia progression. METHODS The Control of Myopia Using Peripheral Diffusion Lenses Efficacy and Safety Study (CYPRESS, NCT03623074) is a 36-month, multicentre, randomised, controlled, double-masked trial evaluating two investigational spectacle lenses versus control lenses in myopic children aged 6-10, with a planned interim analysis at 12 months. The primary endpoints are change from baseline in axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent refraction (SER). RESULTS 256 children (58% female; mean age at screening, 8.1 years) were dispensed spectacles. Across all groups, baseline averages were AL 24.02 mm (SD±0.77 mm), SER -2.01 D (SD±0.9 D) using manifest refraction, and SER -1.94 D (SD±1.0 D) using cycloplegic autorefraction. At 12 months, mean difference in SER progression for test 1 versus control was -0.40 D (p<0.0001), representing a 74% reduction and -0.32 D for Test 2 (p<0.0001), representing a 59% reduction. The difference in AL progression for test 1 versus control was 0.15 mm (p<0.0001) and test 2 versus control was 0.10 mm (p=0.0018). CONCLUSION 12-month results from this ongoing trial demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of DOT spectacles for reducing myopic progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Delaying the development and lowering the progression of myopia in children is the focus of current ophthalmology researches. We aimed to evaluate the role of orthokeratology in controlling myopia of children, to provide insights to the clinical treatment and care of children with myopia. METHODS Two investigators searched the The Cochrane Library, Embase, Pubmed, China national knowledge infrastructure, China biomedical literature database, WanFang and Weipu databases for randomized controlled trials(RCTs) on the role of orthokeratology in controlling myopia of children up to November 5, 2022. Two researchers independently searched, screened and extracted the studies according to the inclusion and exclusion standards. RevMan5.3 software was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS A total of 14 RCTs involving 2058 children were included in this meta-analysis. Synthesized outcomes indicated that orthokeratology improved the uncorrected visual acuity(MD = 0.40, 95%CI: 0.05 ~ 0.74), reduced the diopter change(MD=-3.19, 95%CI: -4.42~-1.95), changes of corneal curvature(MD=-3.21, 95%CI: -3.64~-2.79), the length of ocular axis (MD=-0.66, 95%CI: -1.27~-0.06) and amount of ocular axis change(MD=-0.42, 95%CI: -0.64~-0.21) after 1 year of wearing orthokeratology(all P < 0.05). Besides, orthokeratology reduced the diopter change (MD=-3.22, 95%CI: -4.86~-1.58), the length of ocular axis (MD=-1.15, 95%CI: -2.25~-0.06) and the amount of ocular axis change after 2 year of wearing orthokeratology (MD=-0.53, 95%CI: -0.96~-0.11) after 2 year of wearing orthokeratology (all P < 0.05). No publication biases were found amongst the synthesized outcomes (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Orthokeratology delays the progression of myopia in children, the long-term effects of orthokeratology need further investigations in future studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare 0.01% atropine with DIMS spectacle lenses in the prevention of myopia progression in European children. METHODS This was a retrospective study including data from pediatric European patients with myopia. From November 2021 to March 2022, only 0.01% atropine was prescribed because DIMS lenses were still not available in Portugal. From March to October 2022, only DIMS spectacle lenses were prescribed due to patients' parents' preference. Myopia progression endpoints were axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent (SE) differences between before and 6 months after treatment. AL and SE evolution were compared using a general linear model with repeated measures. RESULTS The study included 98 eyes from 50 patients: 47 in the atropine group and 51 in the DIMS group. There were no statistically significant differences between groups in terms of initial AL, initial SE, sex or age. The mean AL elongation at 6 months was 0.057 mm in the atropine group (SD = 0.118) and 0.002 mm (SD = 0.077) in the DIMS group. SE progression was - 0.098 (SD = 0.232) D in the atropine group and - 0.039 (SD = 0.105) D in the DIMS group. AL elongation was significantly lower in the DIMS lens group (p = 0.038, partial Eta2 = 0.045). There was no difference in SE progression between groups (p = 0.302, partial Eta2 = 0.011). CONCLUSION Comparison between 0.01% atropine eyedrops and DIMS spectacle lenses for slowing the progression of myopia favored DIMS lenses in terms of AL elongation in a short-term follow-up. There was no difference in terms of SE between groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the progression and incidence of myopia in Chinese schoolchildren in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period in Shantou, China. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Shantou Myopia Study, China. PARTICIPANTS 1-year follow-up data were available for 621 881 schoolchildren (301 999 females). Data on spherical equivalent refraction (SER) were collected. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcomes were myopia progression and incidence. Myopia progression is defined as a change of SER towards the negative direction in the follow-up visit. Incidence is defined as the proportion of schoolchildren who were not myopic but developed myopia in the follow-up study. Age, sex and SER at baseline were evaluated as associated factors for myopia burden, which were defined as the secondary outcomes. RESULTS Mean progression of SER was -0.35±0.97 D for the population (ranging from -0.06 D at 18 years of age to -0.46 D at 11 years of age), with a rapid myopic progression for students at the age of 10-12 years (-0.50 D in girls and -0.44 D in boys). A myopic shift greater than -0.50 D/year occurred in 256 299 eyes (41.21%). Myopic progression in refraction was associated with the 10-12 years age groups (OR 1.42; 95% CI 1.39 to 1.45, p<0.001), female sex (OR 1.09; 95% CI 1.08 to 1.10, p<0.001) and higher refractive errors at baseline (OR>1.00, p<0.001). The annual incidence of myopia among schoolchildren was 24.85%, with an incidence of 26.69% in girls and 23.02% in boys. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed an annual myopia progression of -0.35 D and an incidence of 24.85% among schoolchildren in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period. Myopia progressed rapidly at 10-12 years of age, with -0.50 D in girls and -0.44 D in boys. The incidence was higher for children aged 10-11 years and for girls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine spherical equivalent (SE) progression among children in the Shahroud School Children Eye Cohort Study. METHODS A prospective cohort study recruited children aged 6 to 12 years in 2015 (baseline) with a follow-up in 2018. Cycloplegic autorefraction and axial length (AL) measurements were included. SE progression over 3 years was analysed in non-myopic (SE ≥ + 0.76 D), pre-myopic (PM; SE between +0.75 D and -0.49 D), low myopic (LM; SE between -0.5 D and -5.99 D), and high myopic (HM; SE ≤ - 6 D) eyes. Age, sex, near work, outdoor time, living place, parental myopia, mother's education, and baseline SE were evaluated as risk factors for SE progression (≤ -0.50 D). RESULTS Data were available for 3989 children (7945 eyes). At baseline, 40.3% (n = 3205), 3.4% (n = 274) and 0.1% (n = 7) eyes had PM, LM and HM, respectively. At the 3-year follow-up, 40.5% (n = 3216), 7.5% (n = 599) and 0.2% (n = 15) eyes had PM, LM, and HM, respectively. SE progression in eyes with LM and HM was -1.08 ± 0.76 D and -1.60 ± 1.19 D, respectively. SE progression was associated with age at baseline (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-1.21), female sex (OR = 1.80; 95% CI: 1.48-2.18), near work (OR = 1.08; 95% CI: 1.02-1.14), parental myopia (OR = 1.20; 95% CI: 1.01-1.42) and baseline SE (OR = 2.28; 95% CI: 1.88-2.78). CONCLUSION A myopic shift was associated with older age, female sex, near work, parental myopia and greater myopic baseline SE. These results help identifying children at risk of progression that may benefit from treatment and lifestyle counselling.

Abstract
Although several studies have reported about the relationship between the surgical correction of intermittent exotropia and myopic progression, it remains unclear, unlike the relationship between esotropia and hyperopia. Thus, this retrospective case control study evaluated the impact of bilateral lateral rectus recession in intermittent exotropia on myopic progression. This study included 388 patients with intermittent exotropia. The refractive errors and degree of exodeviation at each follow up period were analyzed. The rate of myopic progression was -0.46 ± 0.62 diopter (D)/year in patients who underwent surgery and -0.58 ± 0.78 D/year in patients who did not, with no significant difference between them (p = 0.254). Patients who had recurrences of more than 10 prism diopters were compared with patients who did not have. The rate of myopic progression was -0.57 ± 0.72 D/year in the recurrent group and -0.44 ± 0.61 D/year in the non-recurrent group, with no significant difference between them (p = 0.237). Patients with fast myopic progression had more recurrence than patients with slow progression (p = 0.042). Moreover, recurrence had a positive correlation with fast myopic progression (OR = 2.537, p = 0.021). Conclusively, the surgical correction of intermittent exotropia did not influence myopic progression.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the progression of myopia and risk factors among university students in central China. METHODS A total of 7359 first-year undergraduate students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in central China were recruited to the study and invited to a centralized clinic for medical examination, including optometry, and re-examined after one year. Correlation analyses were performed to assess the associations between one-year myopia progression and various parameters. RESULTS The spherical equivalent refraction for the overall population was -3.14±2.28 D at baseline. The rate of myopia progression over 0.50 D after one year was 41.9%, and the 1-year progression of myopia was -0.47±0.58 D. There was no difference of mean 1-year myopia progression between male and female or difference among age group. The myopia progression of original myopia was severer than progression of new-onset myopia. There was also difference of mean myopia progression among different degrees of myopia at baseline. The under corrected eyes had a higher percentage of myopia progression than well corrected eyes (χ 2=7.90, P<0.01). There was no correlation between myopia progression and height, weight, body mass index, hemoglobin (Spearman correlation, ρ=-0.078, -0.152, -0.170, -0.096, respectively, all P>0.05). CONCLUSION Myopes still progress in undergraduate students, especially in high myopes.

Abstract
Although previous studies have reported an association between physical activity (PA) and myopia in school-aged children, little is known about the link between myopia and children’s functional status. The purpose of this study was to investigate dynamic balance control in relation to the daily PA levels of myopic schoolchildren aged 9−11 years (n = 52) versus a non-myopic control group (n = 53). A single leg stance test performed on the instability platform of the Biodex Balance System was used to assess balance control. The overall stability index (OSI), anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) and medial-lateral stability index (MLSI) were analyzed. PA levels were calculated using the World Health Organization European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative family record form. Myopes and non-myopes were separated into three subgroups based on PA level (low, moderate and high). Myopia significantly affected OSI (F = 40.46, p < 0.001), APSI (F = 33.93, p < 0.001) and MLSI (F = 49.51, p < 0.001). There were significant differences (p < 0.001) between myopic and non-myopic children with low and moderate levels of PA, whilst there were no differences between compared children with high levels of PA. High PA levels had a positive impact on balance control in myopes. Our results showed that PA levels moderate the relationship between myopia and children’s functional status.

Abstract
Although eyeglasses have been considered a cost-effective way to combat myopia, the empirical evidence of its impacts on improving learning outcomes is inconsistent. This paper provides empirical evidence examining the effect of providing eyeglasses on academic performance between provinces with a different economic level in western China. Overall, we find a significant impact in Intention-to-Treat analysis and a large and significant local average treatment effect of providing free eyeglasses to students in the poor province but not in the other. The difference in impact between the two provinces is not a matter of experimental design, implementation, or partial compliance. Instead, we find that the lack of impact in the wealthier provinces is mainly due to less blackboard usage in class and wealthier households. Our study found that providing free eyeglasses to disadvantaged groups boosted their academic performance more than to their counterparts.

Abstract
This study is intended for exploring the effects of the physical activity combined with extra ciliary-muscle training with different frequencies on children's kinetic visual acuity and uncorrected distance visual acuity, and eventually figuring out the optimal frequency of ciliary-muscle training for each physical education class. To do the present research, A total of 160 students aged 10-11 from a school in Suzhou (a major city located in southeastern Jiangsu Province, East China) were randomly selected and divided into control group (n = 33), 15-frequency group (n = 44), 30-frequency group (n = 40) and 60-frequency group (n = 43), and the latter three experimental groups participated in a specially designed physical activity plan based on the training principles of ciliary muscle, while the control group participated in normal physical activity as usual. The experimental intervention period was 16 weeks, and all students' kinetic visual acuity and uncorrected distance visual acuity were measured before and after the experiment. The result showed that the kinetic visual acuity of the students in the 30 and 60-frequency groups got improved significantly after the experiment (p < 0.05), with the highest improvement occurring in the 30-frequency group, while there was no significant change in the 15-frequency group and the control group; The uncorrected distance visual acuity of the students in the 30 and 60-frequency groups was significantly improved after the experiment (p < 0.05), and the improvement range in these two groups was similar. In contrast, there was no significant change in the 15-frequency group, while the control group showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05). Physical activity combined with extra ciliary-muscle training has a positive effect on improving children's vision; at the same time, ciliary-muscle training with different frequencies bring out different outcomes on children's vision improvement, among which ciliary-muscle training with frequency of 30 in each physical education class is the best choice to enhance children's kinetic visual acuity and uncorrected distance visual acuity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of myopia is increasing worldwide. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the progression of myopia in teenagers and adults in France. METHODS This nationwide prospective study followed 630 487 myopic adults and teenagers (mean age 43.4 years±18.2, 59.8% of women) between January 2013 and January 2019. Myopia and high myopia were defined as a spherical equivalent less than or equal to -0.50 and -6.00 diopters (D), respectively. Demographic data were collected at first visit and refractive characteristics were collected at each visit. Analysis of short-term progression (first 12 to 26 months postbaseline) was modelled using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Progression of myopia was stratified according to age, gender and spherical equivalent at first visit. RESULTS Higher proportions of progressors were observed in the youngest age groups: 14-15 (18.2 %) and 16-17 years old (13.9 %). In multivariate analysis, after adjustment for over age, spherical equivalent and gender, the mean short-term progression decreased from -0.36 D in the 14-15 years age group to -0.13 D in the 28-29 years age group. Young age and higher myopia at baseline together were strongly associated with the risk of developing high myopia, the 5-year cumulative risk being 76% for youngest teenager with higher myopia status at baseline. CONCLUSION In this large cohort of myopic teenagers and adults, myopia progression was reported in 18.2% and 13.9% of the 14-15 and 16-17 age groups, respectively. The risk to develop high myopia was higher for younger individuals with higher myopia at baseline examination.

Abstract
Background: In recent years, there was a significant increase in myopia incidence worldwide. However, it is still not clear how it affects Spanish children. Since 2016, this research team analyzed myopia prevalence and risk in 9668 children aged between 5 and 7 years. It was shown that the prevalence rates increased from 16.8% in 2016 to 20.4% in 2019. The objective of this study is to update the prevalence rate of myopia in Spain in 2020 and analyze the risk and prevention factors of myopia. Methods: The participants underwent an optometric examination, and a questionnaire on their lifestyle, family history, and geographical origin was carried out. Finally, data were analyzed using the SPSS version 27 program. Results: 1601 children from various Autonomous Communities of Spain were examined. In 2020 the myopia rates did not increase compared to 2019 (p < 0.05), although the number of hyperopes decreased and the number of emmetropes increased. Regarding age, the prevalence of myopia increased progressively over the years (p < 0.001). There was no association between gender and myopia (p > 0.05). There was a link between the time spent in near vision and family history with the prevalence of myopia (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of myopia in Spain in children between 5 and 7 years old increased significantly between 2016 and 2020.

Abstract
Purpose To determine the relationship between the ocular biometrics and axial length (AL) elongation and its rate in elementary school children. Methods This is a prospective observational study of 102 right eyes of third-grade elementary school students who were 8 to 9 years old. All participants underwent measurements of the AL, anterior chamber depth (ACD), and lens thickness (LT) annually for 3 years. The AL elongation during the first half and second half was calculated by subtracting the AL of the 1st year from that at the 2nd year, and AL of the 3rd year minus 2nd year. The total AL elongation (TALE) was obtained by summing up the first and second half AL elongations. The growth rate change (GRC) was obtained by subtracting the first half AL elongation from second half AL elongation. Spearman correlations were used to determine the correlation between the 1st year ocular biometrics and the TALE and GRC. Results The mean TALE was 0.54 ± 0.26 mm in boys and 0.46 ± 0.31 mm in girls. The mean GRC was 0.00 ± 0.16 mm in boys and −0.04 ± 0.14 mm in girls. In boys and girls, the TALE was significantly larger in the eyes with myopic ocular biometrics such as a deeper ACD, thinner LT, and longer AL during the 1st year (|r|=0.41 to 0.46, P < 0.05). The GRC was significantly accelerated in the eyes of only the girls with hyperopic ocular biometrics such as a shallower ACD, thicker LT, and shorter AL during the 1st year (|r|=0.31 to 0.41, P<0.05). Conclusion In boys and girls, the TALE tends to be larger in eyes with myopic biometrics at the 1st year examination. The GRC tended to accelerate in the eyes with hyperopic ocular biometry during the 1st year only in girls.
