Adiposity, physical activity and risk of diabetes mellitus: prospective data from the population-based HUNT study, Norway

Prediction of Diabetes and Prediabetes among the Saudi Population Using a Non-Invasive Tool (AUSDRISK)

Background and Objectives: Screening for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) aims to identify asymptomatic individuals who may be at a higher risk, allowing proactive interventions. The objective of this study was to predict the incidence of DM2 and prediabetes in the Saudi population over the next five years. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the Aseer region through August 2023 using a cross-sectional survey for data collection. A multistage stratified random sampling technique was adopted, and data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the validated Arabic version of the Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool (AUSDRISK). Results: In total, 652 individuals were included in the study. Their mean age was 32.0 ± 12.0 years; 53.8% were male, 89.6% were from urban areas, and 55.8% were single. There were statistically significant differences between males and females in AUSDRISK items, including age, history of high blood glucose, use of medications for high blood pressure, smoking, physical activity, and measurements of waist circumference (p < 0.05). Based on AUSDRISK scores, 46.2% of the included participants were predicted to develop impaired glucose tolerance within the coming five years (65.8% among females vs. 23.6%), and 21.9% were predicted to develop DM2 (35.6% among males vs. 6.0% among females); this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.0001). Conclusions: Urgent public health action is required to prevent the increasing epidemic of DM2 in Saudi Arabia.

Diet and exercise knowledge and practices for diabetes care within families in Senwabarwana

BACKGROUND

 Family members (FMs) are a valuable source of support, as the bulk of daily diabetes treatment occurs at home. Family members' insufficient understanding of patient support can lead to poor diabetes outcomes. Lack of knowledge about good diet and exercise can lead to unhealthy food preparation and sedentary lifestyles, affecting patients and increasing the risk of diabetes. This study aims to fill the gap in the level of knowledge of FMs relating to appropriate care for diabetic patients under their care. This will relate specifically to diet and exercise.

METHODS

 A cross-sectional survey conducted in Senwabarwana, Limpopo province, involved 200 FMs caring for diabetic patients for at least 6 months. Their experience could offer valuable insights into the competence of their care. Data were collected regarding knowledge and practice using a close-ended questionnaire, with Likert scale responses and SPSS analysis, including descriptive statistics and chi-squared tests. Knowledge was assessed on a scale ranging from poor to excellent: poor (0% - 50%), fair (51% - 60%), good (61% - 74%) and excellent ( 75%). Practice was assessed as poor (0% - 50%), fair (51% - 69%) and good (70% - 100%).

RESULTS

 Thirty-one percent of participants demonstrated excellent knowledge and only 9% demonstrated good practice. Unfortunately, 53% stated that obese patients with diabetes should skip meals to lose weight. Only 3.5% and 19%, respectively, are familiar with recommendations for exercise and glucose monitoring. Barely 35.5% of FMs eat breakfast every day, while 87.5% report exercising.

CONCLUSION

 Few FMs possess excellent diabetes management knowledge but still indulge in bad practices, increasing their risk of developing diabetes. Additionally, they may potentially cause health problems for patients.Contribution: Family-centred behaviour change intervention is recommended.

Trends of Antidiabetic and Cardiovascular Diseases Medication Prescriptions in Type 2 Diabetes between 2005 and 2017-A German Longitudinal Study Based on Claims Data

BACKGROUND

With an attempt to understand possible mechanisms behind the severity-dependent development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) comorbidities, this study examines the trends of antidiabetic and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) medication prescriptions in individuals with T2D.

METHODS

The study is based on claims data from a statutory health insurance provider in Lower Saxony, Germany. The period prevalence of antidiabetic and CVD medication prescriptions was examined for the periods 2005-2007, 2010-2012, and 2015-2017 in 240,241, 295,868, and 308,134 individuals with T2D, respectively. (Ordered) logistic regression analyses were applied to examine the effect of time period on the number and prevalence of prescribed medications. Analyses were stratified by gender and three age groups.

RESULTS

The number of prescribed medications per person has increased significantly for all examined subgroups. For the two younger age groups, insulin prescriptions decreased but those of non-insulin medications increased, while both increased significantly over time for the age group of 65+ years. Except for glycosides and antiarrhythmic medications, the predicted probabilities for CVD medications increased over the examined periods, with lipid-lowering agents demonstrating the highest increase.

CONCLUSIONS

Results point towards an increase in medication prescriptions in T2D, which is in line with the evidence of the increase in most comorbidities indicating morbidity expansion. The increase in CVD medication prescriptions, especially lipid-lowering agents, could explain the specific development of severe and less severe T2D comorbidities observed in this population.

The relationship between occupational dust exposure and incidence of diabetes in male workers: A retrospective cohort study

AIM

Previous studies have focused on the association between ambient particulate matter and diabetes. However, the relationship between subacute exposure to occupational dust and diabetes has not been explored. We aimed to assess this relationship.

METHODS

Men who worked in dust-related process factories between January 2013 and December 2017 were recruited from a Korea Health Worker Examination Common Data Model cohort. A history of physician-diagnosed diabetes, use of an anti-diabetic drug, or a fasting blood glucose level of ≥7 mmol/L were considered the criteria to diagnose diabetes. Multivariable time-dependent Cox analysis estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for incident diabetes associated with exposure to occupational dust exposure; interactions with lifestyle factors were analysed. Sensitivity analyses used propensity score matching and landmark analysis.

RESULTS

Among 5141 male participants (median follow-up duration, 3.85 years), 349 participants had diabetes. Occupational dust exposure was related to an increased risk of diabetes in the time-dependent Cox analysis (entire cohort: HR 1.66 [95% CI 1.25-2.19], matched cohort: HR 1.65 [95% CI 1.22-2.24]). The findings showed the same direction in the landmark analysis (HR 1.42 [95% CI 1.01-1.99]).

CONCLUSIONS

A significant relationship exists between occupational dust exposure and increased risk of diabetes in male workers. Further studies should be conducted to confirm that occupational dust exposure is a possible risk factor for diabetes.

Prevalence of diabetes mellitus and associated risk factors in Nepal: findings from a nationwide population-based survey

OBJECTIVES

The burden of diabetes mellitus (DM) has increased globally, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries, including Nepal. Population-based nationally representative data on the prevalence of DM is limited. This paper presents the prevalence of DM and its associated risk factors in Nepal.

RESEARCH DESIGNS AND METHODS

This population-based study sampled 13 200 participants aged 20 years and above in 400 clusters of 72 districts of Nepal. The study used a standardised questionnaire adapted from the WHO STEPwise approach to non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance instrument and digitalised in Android-compatible mobile phones. Fasting and 2 hours postprandial blood samples were taken to test various biochemical parameters. Descriptive followed by multivariate analyses were done to assess the association between explanatory variables and the outcome variable.

PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES

Prevalence of DM.

RESULTS

The prevalence of DM was found to be 8.5% (95% CI 7.8% to 9.3%). The odds of DM occurrence were higher in the upper age groups (40-59 years at adjusted OR (AOR) 3.1 (95% CI2.3 to 4.2) and 60+ years at AOR 4.7 (95% CI 3.3 to 6.6)), compared with the group aged 20-39 years. Men were found to have higher odds of DM (AOR 1.3, 95% CI 1.1 to 1.6) compared with women. Urban residents had almost twice higher odds of DM (AOR 1.7, 95% CI 1.4 to 2.2) compared with rural residents. Participants with raised blood pressure (BP) (AOR 2.2, 95% CI 1.8 to 2.7), those who were overweight and obese (AOR 2.0, 95% CI 1.6 to 2.4) and those who had high triglycride level (≥150 mg/dL) (AOR 2.1, 95% CI 1.8 to 2.6) also had twice higher odds of DM compared with those with normal BP, an average body mass index and normal triglyceride level, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Targeted interventions to higher risk groups as well as prevention and control of other associated biological risk factors might help to reduce the prevalence of DM in Nepal.

Factors Associated with Level of Physical Activity After Minor Stroke

OBJECTIVES

To explore factors from the acute phase, and after three and 12 months, associated with level of self-reported physical activity 12 months after a minor ischemic stroke with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score ≤ 3 in persons 70 years or younger.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

In this longitudinal cohort study patients were recruited consecutively from two stroke units. Activity level were measured with three sets of questions addressing the average number of frequency (times exercising each week), the average intensity, and duration (the average time), and a sum score was constructed. The association between physical activity 12 months after stroke and sociodemographic factors, NIHSS, body mass index, balance, and neuropsychiatric symptoms were explored using multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

This study included 101 patients, with mean age (SD) 55.5 (11.4) years, NIHSS median (Q₁, Q₃) 0.0 (0.0, 1.0), and 20 % were female. Multiple linear regression analyses showed sick leave status at stroke onset, balance at three and 12 months, and anxiety, depression, apathy, and fatigue at 12 months to be factors associated with physical activity at 12 months after stroke.

CONCLUSION

We found that pre-stroke sick leave, post-stroke balance, and neuropsychiatric symptoms were associated with the level of physical activity one year after minor stroke. This might be of importance when giving information about physical activity and deciding about post-stroke follow-up.

Physical Activity, Genetic Susceptibility, and the Risk of Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults and Type 2 Diabetes

PURPOSE

Physical activity (PA) has been linked to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes by reducing weight and improving insulin sensitivity. We investigated whether PA is associated with a lower incidence of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) and whether the association is modified by genotypes of human leukocyte antigen (HLA), transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2)-rs7903146, or the fat mass and obesity-associated gene, FTO-rs9939609.

METHODS

We combined data from a Swedish case-control study and a Norwegian prospective study including 621 incident cases of LADA and 3596 cases of type 2 diabetes. We estimated adjusted pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% CI of diabetes in relation to high (≥ 30 minutes of moderate activity 3 times/week) self-reported leisure time PA, compared to sedentariness.

RESULTS

High PA was associated with a reduced risk of LADA (RR 0.61; CI, 0.43-0.86), which was attenuated after adjustment for body mass index (BMI) (RR 0.90; CI, 0.63-1.29). The reduced risk applied only to noncarriers of HLA-DQB1 and -DRB1 (RR 0.49; CI, 0.33-0.72), TCF7L2 (RR 0.62; CI, 0.45-0.87), and FTO (RR 0.51; CI, 0.32-0.79) risk genotypes. Adjustment for BMI attenuated but did not eliminate these associations. For type 2 diabetes, there was an inverse association with PA (RR 0.49; CI, 0.42-0.56), irrespective of genotype.

MAIN CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate that high PA is associated with a reduced risk of LADA in individuals without genetic susceptibility.

The association between physical activity with incident obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes and hypertension in adults: a systematic review of longitudinal studies published after 2012

BACKGROUND

A growing body of studies that investigated the longitudinal association between physical activity (PA) and the outcome of incident obesity, coronary heart disease (CHD), diabetes and hypertension has become available in recent years. Thus, the purpose of this systematic review was to provide an update on the association between PA and onset of obesity, CHD, diabetes and hypertension in individuals aged ≥18 years who were free of the respective conditions at baseline.

METHODS

We systematically searched OVID, Pubmed, and Web of Science databases for pertinent literature published between January of 2012 and February of 2019. To ensure that conclusions are based on high quality evidence, we only included longitudinal studies conducted in samples of ≥500 participants and with ≥5 years of follow-up.

RESULT

The search yielded 8929 records of which 26 were included in this review. Three studies were conducted on the outcome of incident obesity, eight on incident CHD, nine on incident diabetes, four on incident hypertension, one on the outcome of both diabetes and hypertension, and one on the outcome of CHD, diabetes and hypertension. Overall, there was an association between PA and lower risk of incident obesity, CHD and diabetes, but not hypertension. Higher levels or amount of PA were associated with a reduced risk of new onset of the respective diseases in 20 studies (77%). Whereas four studies reported an elevated risk of incidence of diseases with lower PA levels (15%). PA was not associated with incidence of diseases in two studies (8%).

CONCLUSION

Higher levels of PA are likely associated with a lower risk of becoming obese, develop CHD or diabetes. These findings replicate and strengthen conclusions from earlier reviews underlining the importance of promoting PA in adults. The associations between PA and incident hypertension were less consistent. More research, particularly using prospective cohort designs in large population-based samples, is needed to further untangle the association between PA and incident hypertension.

Associations of sleep durations and sleep-related parameters with metabolic syndrome among older Chinese adults

PURPOSE

There is a lack of data on the role of sleep in the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in older adults. We aimed to examine the associations of sleep durations at night and other sleep-related parameters with the presence of MetS in older Chinese adults.

METHODS

Data of 4579 individuals aged 60 years or older from the Weitang Geriatric Disease Study were analyzed. MetS was diagnosed based on the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Information regarding sleep durations and other sleep-related parameters was collected by questionnaires.

RESULTS

Compared with those with daytime napping, individuals without daytime napping were at an increased risk of MetS (odds ratio [OR] = 1.23; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03-1.47). Each hour increase in daytime napping increased the risk of MetS by 33% (OR = 1.33; 95% CI = 1.15-1.52). After adjusting for the effect of age and gender, a J-shaped association between sleep durations at night and the presence of MetS was observed. The risk of MetS was lowest among those who slept 7-8 h at night. Gender-stratified analysis indicated that the J-shaped relationship between sleep durations at night and MetS remained significant in men but not in women.

CONCLUSIONS

In older Chinese adults, sleep durations at night might have a dual effect on the risk of MetS and this effect was particularly pronounced in men. The results indicated that circadian rhythm might play an important role in the development of MetS in older populations.

Association between physical activity and diabetic complications among Bangladeshi type 2 diabetic patients

BACKGROUND

The aim of the study was to assess the association of physical activity (PA) with the presence of diabetes related complications among Bangladeshi type 2 diabetic subjects.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Out Patient Department (OPD) of BIRDEM, Bangladesh. A group of 977 subjects were randomly selected and followed up. Diabetes was diagnosed following the WHO study group criteria. The level of PA was categorized into inactive/low (<150 min/week) and moderate-to-vigorous (≥150 min/week). The WHO recommended Asian criteria was used to identify general obesity. Retinopathy was detected by fundal photography, CKD by serum creatinine and hypertension was diagnosed clinically. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess the associations of PA with diabetes related complications.

RESULTS

Out of the 977 subjects investigated, 468 were male and 509 were female (mean ± SD of age, 56 ± 8 years). In the study subjects, 74% were either inactive or in low PA and of them 65.1% were overweight/obese. Analysis showed that inactive/low PA was associated with all the three diabetes related complications (p < 0.001)-hypertension, retinopathy, and nephropathy. Multivariate analysis showed that inactive/low level of PA was strongly associated with complications like retinopathy (p < 0.001) and hypertension (p = 0.01) in the female patients. It was also found to be highly associated with retinopathy (p < 0.001) among the male patients.

CONCLUSION

A large number of urban Bangladeshi population are involved only in low PA or remain inactive themselves, which is leading to obesity and it seems to have a strong association with diabetes related complications in this population.

Software application profile: mrrobust—a tool for performing two-sample summary Mendelian randomization analyses

Motivation

In recent years, Mendelian randomization analysis using summary data from genome-wide association studies has become a popular approach for investigating causal relationships in epidemiology. The mrrobust Stata package implements several of the recently developed methods.

Implementation

mrrobust is freely available as a Stata package.

General features

The package includes inverse variance weighted estimation, as well as a range of median, modal and MR-Egger estimation methods. Using mrrobust, plots can be constructed visualizing each estimate either individually or simultaneously. The package also provides statistics such as IGX2, which are useful in assessing attenuation bias in causal estimates.

Different associations of sufficient and vigorous physical activity with BMI in Northwest China

Physical activity (PA) plays an important role in maintaining a healthy weight. To develop targeted strategies that encourage physical activity, knowledge of associations between intensity of physical activity (PA) levels and body mass index (BMI) is essential. We aimed to examine the relationship between sufficient and vigorous PA and BMI distribution among adults in northwest China using quantile regression. We conducted a cross-sectional study in Shaanxi Province in 2013, using proportional probability sampling. BMI was calculated using measured height and weight. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to define and measure sufficient and vigorous PA. Associations of sufficient/vigorous PA and BMI were modelled using quantile regression. Mean BMI was 24.18 ± 3.51 and BMI distribution with age showed an inverse U shape. A total 9045 (88.97%) participants demonstrated sufficient PA and 3119 (30.68%) reported vigorous PA. After adjusting for relevant sociodemographic, dietary, and lifestyle parameters in quantile regression modelling, sufficient PA was positively associated with BMI score distribution from the 1st to 30th quantile, with β from 0.32 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.07 to 0.63) to 0.85 (95% CI: 0.40 to 1.19). Vigorous PA was negatively associated with BMI score distribution from the 30th to 93th quantiles, with β from -0.18 (95% CI: -0.31 to -0.02) to -0.81 (95% CI: -1.10 to -0.45). Sufficient PA was positively associated with underweight and normal weight whereas vigorous PA was negatively associated with overweight and obesity.

Adiposity and Diabetes Risk in Adults with Prediabetes: Heterogeneity of Findings Depending on Age and Anthropometric Measure

OBJECTIVE

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of age on diabetes incidence by general and central adiposity after 3-year follow-up in adults with prediabetes.

METHODS

Data were taken from a cohort of 1,184 subjects with prediabetes included in The Cohort Study in Primary Health Care on the Evolution of Patients with Prediabetes (PREDAPS). General adiposity was defined using body mass index (BMI), and central adiposity was defined with waist circumference and waist to height ratio. Data were analyzed by age groups 30 to 59 and 60 to 74 years. The association between adiposity and diabetes incidence was assessed using hazard ratios (HR).

RESULTS

Adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyles, and metabolic parameters, diabetes HR for central adiposity based on the waist circumference clinical cutoff were 2.14 (1.12-4.09) and 1.48 (0.80-2.74) for people aged 30 to 59 and 60 to 74 years, respectively. In the model additionally adjusted for BMI, diabetes HR were 2.65 (1.24-5.65) and 1.33 (0.68-2.59), respectively. The use of a 1-SD increase rather than cutoff points did not alter this pattern. Similar findings were observed with central adiposity based on waist to height ratio.

CONCLUSIONS

The association of central adiposity with type 2 diabetes incidence was lower for people in the older age group than for those in the younger age group.

Physical activity as a moderator for obstructive sleep apnoea and cardiometabolic risk in the EPISONO study

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is positively associated with cardiometabolic diseases; however, high levels of physical activity could decrease the incidence of OSA and associated comorbidities.

In this study we aimed to examine the incidence of OSA in relation to physical activity, and its role as a protective factor in individuals with OSA on the incidence of cardiometabolic diseases, in an 8–9-year follow-up study. We analysed data of 658 volunteers from the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO), a cohort study of individuals aged 20–80 years, collected through polysomnography, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and an assessment of cardiometabolic profile.

Active subjects had a lower risk of developing OSA compared with nonactive subjects (relative risk 0.877, 95% CI 0.296–0.855) and there was a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in active/apnoeic subjects (relative risk 0.493, 95% CI 0.252–0.961) compared with nonactive subjects. Metabolic equivalent was negatively associated to cardiometabolic markers, such as C-reactive protein (exp(B)=0.720; p=0.001), interleukin-6 (exp(B)=0.991; p=0.03), insulin (exp(B)=0.982; p=0.03), triglycerides (exp(B)=0.997; p<0.001), homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (exp(B)≤0.946; p<0.024), quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (exp(B)=992.4; p<0.001) and mean arterial pressure (exp(B)=0.987; p=0.001).

Physical activity was a protective factor against type 2 diabetes mellitus in apnoeic individuals; moreover, being active reduced the risk of developing OSA and was associated with a better cardiometabolic profile.

Physical activity and body mass shape quality of life trajectories in mid-age women

OBJECTIVE

To determine the combined longitudinal effect of body mass index (BMI) and physical activity (PA) on health-related quality of life (HrQoL), using the SF-6D (SF-36) utility measure.

METHODS

Five waves of self-reported data from the 1946-51 cohort (n=5,200; data collection, 2001-2013) of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health were used. Mixed effect models were employed to address the objective.

RESULTS

Women with high PA experienced higher HrQoL regardless of BMI group, however, for those healthy or overweight, there was a very small decline in HrQoL over time. Women reporting no PA levels experienced the lowest baseline mean SF-6D score within each BMI group, with decreasing trajectories over the follow-up period. The rate of decline was greatest in women with obesity. Within each BMI group, there was a large, increasing gap in HrQoL between those who reported no and low PA over time. Women with obesity and high PA experienced similar HrQoL trajectories to women with normal weight or overweight with low PA levels. Overweight women with moderate PA experienced similar HrQoL to those with low PA but normal weight.

CONCLUSIONS

PA may mitigate the adverse effect of overweight and obesity on HrQoL at mid-life, at higher activity levels. Implications for public health: PA benefits HrQoL regardless of body mass, with larger gains for those currently not physically active. Moderate to high PA may mitigate the effect of overweight and obesity.

Adiposity, physical activity, and risk of hypertension: prospective data from the population-based HUNT Study, Norway

Adiposity and inactivity have been associated with increased risk of hypertension. However, reports on the joint effect of these two risk factors in relation to hypertension are scarce and their interaction poorly understood. We prospectively examined both independent and joint effects of measured body mass index (BMI) and self-reported physical activity on the risk of hypertension. We conducted a longitudinal study of 11,238 men and 15,301 women who participated in the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) in Norway. Poisson regression was used to estimate adjusted risk ratios (RRs) of hypertension (≥140/90 mmHg) according to BMI and physical activity. BMI was positively associated with risk of hypertension in both sexes (P_trends < 0.001), whereas the independent effect of physical activity was less clear. Obese men who reported no physical activity had a RR of 1.50 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.27-1.77) compared to normal weight men with a high activity level, whereas obese men who reported high activity levels had a RR of 1.16 (95% CI: 0.79-1.70). Correspondingly, obese and inactive women had a RR of 1.55 (95% CI: 1.35-1.77), whereas obese and highly active women had RRs of 1.41 (95% CI: 1.18-1.69). Our data suggest that high levels of physical activity could to some extent attenuate the unfavorable effect of adiposity on hypertension, particularly in men.

The role of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue measurements and their ratio by magnetic resonance imaging in subjects with prediabetes, diabetes and healthy controls from a general population without cardiovascular disease

OBJECTIVE

To study the relationship of area- and volumetric-based visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT and SAT) by MRI and their ratio in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism from the general population.

METHODS

Subjects from a population-based cohort with established prediabetes, diabetes and healthy controls without prior cardiovascular diseases underwent 3 T MRI. VAT and SAT were assessed as total volume and area on a single slice, and their ratio (VAT/SAT) was calculated. Clinical covariates and cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension and glycemic state were assessed in standardized fashion. Univariate and adjusted analyses were conducted.

RESULTS

Among 384 subjects (age: 56.2 ± 9.2 years, 58.1% male) with complete MRI data available, volumetric and single-slice VAT, SAT and VAT/SAT ratio were strongly correlated (all >r = 0.89). Similarly, VAT/SAT_volume ratio was strongly correlated with VAT_volume but not with SAT (r = 0.72 and r = -0.21, respectively). Significant higher levels of VAT, SAT and VAT/SAT ratio were found in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism (all p ≤ 0.01). After adjustment for potential cardiovascular confounders, VAT_volume and VAT/SAT_volume ratio remained significantly higher in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism (VAT_volume = 6.9 ± 2.5 l and 3.4 ± 2.3 l; VAT/SAT_volume ratio = 0.82 ± 0.34 l and 0.49 ± 0.29 l in patients with diabetes and controls, respectively, all p < 0.02), whereas the association for SAT_volume attenuated. Additionally, there was a decreasing effect of glycemic status on VAT/SAT_volume ratio with increasing body mass index and waist circumference (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

VAT_volume and VAT/SAT_volume ratio are associated with impaired glucose metabolism, independent of cardiovascular risk factors or MRI-based quantification technique, with a decreasing effect of VAT/SAT_volume ratio in obese subjects. Advances in knowledge: Quantification of VAT_volume and VAT/SAT_volume ratio by MRI represents a reproducable biomarker associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism, while the association of VAT/SAT_volume ratio with glycemic state is attenuated in obese subjects.
