Abstract
Hypertension is a prominent risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Gender differences and menopausal status contribute to blood pressure changes across the lifespan which have not been completely characterized. Our study aims to explore the impact of multiple factors on blood pressure levels in previously healthy women and men. Factors of interest included gender, menopausal status, age, and body mass index. Healthy women and men were recruited through healthcare facility announcements. Detailed menopausal history was obtained from females. The authors measured each participant's systolic and diastolic blood pressure at our outpatient clinics twice on the same day, and two different days, one week apart, and the authors included the mean of the averaged two readings for each participant. The study sample consisted of 313 participants. Female gender was a significant predictor of lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p < .001), while age significantly correlated with higher systolic blood pressure readings (p = .004). Although systolic blood pressure levels were significantly higher in postmenopausal females (124 mmHg) compared to premenopausal females (116 mmHg), our multiple linear regression analysis revealed that postmenopausal status did not significantly predict changes in either systolic or diastolic blood pressure. Our study demonstrates significant associations between blood pressure levels and various factors such as gender and age. This could emphasize the intricate interplay of demographic and clinical factors in blood pressure variations among individuals, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to diagnosing hypertension, which considers various individual factors, including gender and age.

Abstract
Objective Hypertension is the most challenging public health problem worldwide and seriously affects human health. To date, there are no epidemiological studies on the prevalence of and risk factors for hypertension among older people in mainland China. Methods We conducted a meta-analysis of the prevalence and risk factors of hypertension among the older population in mainland China. We searched Chinese and English databases for Chinese and English literature on hypertension epidemiology published between 2000 and 2022, and hypertension data among the older population were extracted from the included literature. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model (I2 > 50%) with 95% confidence intervals for the forest plots. Data were processed using RevMan 5.3. Forty-nine publications (with data from 84,429 samples) met the evaluation criteria and were included in this study. Results We found that the total prevalence of hypertension was 47%. The total prevalence rate of the older population in China from 2000 to 2010 was 50%, and the prevalence rate from 2011 to 2021 was 45%, with no significant differences. The total prevalence in Central China was the highest (59%). There was no significant correlation between the prevalence rate of the older population, sex, and urban or rural areas. Conclusion Hypertension is common among the older population in China, and its control rate is low. Therefore, effective prevention and treatment measures, as well as education, should be formulated to improve the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension in the older population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Air pollution poses a major threat to human health by causing various illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases. While plenty of research indicates a correlation between air pollution and hypertension, a definitive answer has yet to be found. METHODS Our analyses were performed using the Genome-wide association study (GWAS) of exposure to air pollutants from UKB (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOX; n = 423,796 to 456,380), essential hypertension from FinnGen (42,857 cases and 162,837 controls) and from UKB (54,358 cases and 408,652 controls) as a validated cohort. Univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) were conducted to investigate the causal relationship between air pollutants and essential hypertension. Body mass index (BMI), alcohol intake frequency, and the number of cigarettes previously smoked daily were included in multivariable MRs (MVMRs) as potential mediators/confounders. RESULTS Our findings suggested that higher levels of both PM2.5 (OR [95%CI] per 1 SD increase in predicted exposure = 1.24 [1.02-1.53], p = 3.46E-02 from Finn; OR [95%CI] = 1.04 [1.02-1.06], p = 7.58E-05 from UKB) and PM10 (OR [95%CI] = 1.24 [1.02-1.53], p = 3.46E-02 from Finn; OR [95%CI] = 1.04 [1.02-1.06], p = 7.58E-05 from UKB) were linked to an increased risk for essential hypertension. Even though we used MVMR to adjust for the impacts of smoking and drinking on the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and essential hypertension risks, our findings suggested that although there was a direct positive connection between them, it is not present after adjusting BMI (OR [95%CI] = 1.05 [0.87-1.27], p = 6.17E-01). Based on the study, higher exposure to PM2.5 and PM10 increases the chances of developing essential hypertension, and this influence could occur through mediation by BMI. CONCLUSION Exposure to both PM2.5 and PM10 is thought to have a causal relationship with essential hypertension. Those impacted by substantial levels of air pollution require more significant consideration for their cardiovascular health.

Abstract
Although strong positive correlations exist between grip strength and cardiovascular health, the association between grip strength and blood pressure (BP) is less clear. In this regard, a more precise relationship between grip strength and BP may be revealed by considering adiposity. We examined the association between grip strength and BP in 9424 individuals aged 18-92 years, while controlling for or stratifying by body mass index (BMI) or body fat (BF)%. Grip strength, BP and BF% were determined using dynamometry, sphygmomanometry and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Overall, those with elevated BP had greater grip strength than those with normal BP (39.17 kg vs 38.38 kg, p < 0.001); however, following stratification this was only observed in overweight or obese individuals (42.08 kg vs 41.10 kg, p = 0.003 and 41.34 kg vs 40.03 kg, p = 0.033), and those within the highest BF% tertile (37.95 kg vs 36.52 kg, p < 0.001). Overall, higher grip strength was associated with an increased odds for elevated BP (OR = 1.014, 95% CI = 1.004-1.024, p = 0.004); however, after stratification the increased odds was only observed in overweight or obese individuals (OR = 1.025, 95% CI = 1.010-1.039, p < 0.001 and OR = 1.018, 95% CI = 1.004-1.031, p = 0.010), and those within the highest BF% tertile (OR = 1.036, 95% CI = 1.022-1.051, p < 0.001). Individuals with low grip strength and high BF% had lower odds for elevated BP (OR = 0.514, 95% CI = 0.341-0.775, p = 0.002), whereas those with low grip strength and low BF% had higher odds for elevated BP (OR = 2.162, 95% CI = 1.026-4.555, p = 0.043). Our findings show that higher grip strength is related to higher BP in overweight or obese individuals, or those with a high BF%. Having a BMI < 25 kg/m2 or lower BF% may neutralise this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is one of the most vital risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, so we wanted to explore the impact of the interaction between occupational stress and smoking, alcohol drinking and BMI on hypertension in Chinese petrochemical workers. METHODS A total of 1488 employees participated. Questionnaires included the value of blood pressure, occupational stress (assessed by the effort-reward imbalance scale), demographic factors and work conditions. Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore related factors, and the interactions between occupational stress and smoking, alcohol drinking and BMI on hypertension were analyzed using an additive model. RESULTS The prevalence of hypertension was 34.3%. Age ≥ 56 (OR = 3.19, 95%CI: 1.841-5.526), male (OR = 1.436, 95%CI: 1.056-1.954), BMI ≥ 25 (OR = 1.86, 95%CI: 1.468-2.346), smoking (OR = 1.52, 95%CI: 1.191-1.951) and alcohol drinking (OR = 1.53, 95%CI: 1.180-1.972), ERI > 1 (OR = 1.50, 95%CI: 1.133-1.960) are risk factors for hypertension, and a higher education level (OR = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.438-0.754) is a protective factor against hypertension. Positive interactions existed between occupational stress and smoking (RERI = 2.134, AP = 0.328, S = 1.635), alcohol drinking (RERI = 2.332, AP = 0.361, S = 1.746) and BMI (RERI = 1.841, AP = 0.340, S = 1.717) on hypertension in petrochemical workers. CONCLUSIONS Age, gender, educational level, BMI, smoking, alcohol drinking and occupational stress are closely related to the risk of hypertension. There are also positive interactions between occupational stress and alcohol drinking, smoking and BMI, which have a certain impact on hypertension.

Greater Protection of Lower Dietary Carbohydrate to Fiber Ratio (CFR) against Poor Blood Pressure Control in Patients with Essential Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Study. Abstract
(1) Background: Carbohydrate combined with dietary fiber (DF) applied as a surrogate marker of overall carbohydrate quality is a more essential determinant of cardiometabolic health. However, to date, no studies have applied this metric to analyze its associations with poor blood pressure control in hypertensive patients. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional design was implemented in one tertiary hospital and one community hospital in China. Using Feihua Nutrition Software to analyze participants' two-day dietary log, the quantity of carbohydrate and fiber was obtained and the carbohydrate to fiber ratio (CFR) was calculated. The participants were divided into Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups by quartile method, from low to high according to CFR. The poor systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) controls were defined as ≥140 mmHg and ≥90 mmHg, respectively. (3) Results: A convenience sample of 459 participants was included and the mean CFR was 29.6. Taking Q1 as reference, after adjusting for covariates, the CFR in Q4 was associated with higher poor SBP-controlled rate (OR, 4.374; 95% CI, 2.236-8.559). Taking Q2 as reference, after adjusting for covariates, the CFRs in Q3 and Q4 were associated with higher poor DBP-controlled rates [(OR = 1.964, 95% CI: 1.016-3.795) and (OR = 4.219, 95% CI: 2.132-8.637), respectively]. The CFR was the stronger protective determinant of SBP and DBP than DF or carbohydrate alone. (4) Conclusions: A higher CFR is a stronger risk factor for blood pressure (BP) control, and low CFR foods or a combination of corresponding food components, should be recommended in the dietary management of hypertensive patients.

Abstract
(1) Background: The management goal for patients with essential hypertension (HTN) is not only to lower blood pressure (BP), but also to control increased heart rate (HR). In a previous study, it was found that dietary fiber (DF) supplementation can effectively reduce BP in patients with HTN. The aim of this study was to determine whether a DF supplement can lower HR in patients with HTN. (2) Methods: Seventy patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly allocated into the control group (n = 34) and the intervention group (n = 36). The regular DASH dietary care was delivered to both groups of patients. In addition, one bag of oat bran (30 g/d, containing DF 8.9 g) was delivered to the intervention group. The 24 h ambulatory heart rate was measured at baseline and 3 months. (3) Results: At 3 months, the 24 h maximum heart rate (24h maxHR) in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group. After the intervention, within-group comparisons in the intervention group revealed that there were significant reductions in the 24 h average heart rate (24h aveHR), 24h maxHR, average heart rate during day time (D-aveHR), minimum heart rate during day time (D-minHR), and maximum heart rate during day time (D-maxHR). Similar differences were not found in the control group. (4) Conclusions: Dietary fiber (oat bran) supplementation might be beneficial in lowering HR in patients with HTN.

Abstract
Hypertension is a common chronic cardiovascular disease reported among both men and women. Hypertension in males affects the testis and reproduction function; however, the pathogenesis is poorly understood. Rapamycin has been reported to have a variety of beneficial pharmacological effects; however, high-doses rapamycin does have side effects such as immunosuppression. The present study investigates whether low-dose rapamycin can reduce the damage caused by hypertension to the testis of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and further examines molecular mechanism of low-dose rapamycin in preventing testicular toxicity induced by angiotensin II (Ang II). Low rapamycin dose restores the testicle size, histological alterations, 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) expression, and prevents apoptosis in SHR rats. Ang II downregulates angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) expression through AT1R, p-ERK, and MAS receptor in LC-540 Leydig cells in a dose-dependent manner. Low doses of rapamycin effectively upregulate steroidogenic enzymes, steroidogenic acute regulatory protein and 3β-HSD expression in Leydig cells. Rapamycin upregulates ACE2 expression through p-PKAc and p-PI3k in Ang II-treated cells. Further, rapamycin curbs mitochondrial superoxide generation and depleted mitochondrial membrane potential induced by Ang II through activation of Nrf2-mediated Gpx4 and superoxide dismutase 2 expression. Our results revealed the involvement of ACE2, AT1R, AT2R, PKAc, and oxidative stress in Ang-II-induced testicular toxicity, suggesting low-dose rapamycin could be a potential therapeutic candidate to attenuate testicular toxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the epidemiological status quo of hypertension in elderly population in Changchun, China, and provide a reference for the prevention and control strategies of hypertension of elderly population in this region. DESIGN A cross-sectional study, as a part of a comprehensive project in Northeast China, was designed to perform in 10 districts in Changchun. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING A total of 6846 participants who were ≥60 years old were selected using a random sampling method. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The epidemiological status quo of hypertension. RESULTS The prevalence of hypertension in Changchun was 52.6%. Among participants with hypertension enrolled in this study, 87.6% of the participants had been diagnosed with hypertension before the study, 69.1% was taking antihypertensive medications and 66.9% had effective blood pressure control. Obesity, widower/widow, history of diseases and family history of hypertension were risk factors of hypertension (all p<0.05). Participants with obesity, a personal history of heart coronary disease, or a family history of hypertension were susceptible to realising risks of hypertension (all p<0.05). However, participants with diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, or a family history of hypertension were difficult to control blood pressure within the normal range (all p<0.05). In addition, 92.6% participants taking antihypertensive medications used a single medication, and calcium channel blockers was the most commonly used antihypertensive medications in monotherapy. CONCLUSION The rates of awareness, treatment and control of hypertension are greater in Changchun than those in China, indicating that the prevention and control of hypertension in Changchun are effective. However, the prevalence of hypertension in the elderly population in China is lower than that in Changchun, also rendering Changchun a substantial challenge for the supervision of hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to develop a risk score model for predicting hypertension specific to the population of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to facilitate prevention and early intervention. METHODS A retrospective analysis of data from the Dubai Household Health Survey 2019 was conducted. Demographic and physical parameters, as well as blood glucose levels, were included in the data. The risk factors for hypertension were identified using bivariate analysis. A risk score model was developed using the enter method, where all significant predictors of hypertension in bivariate analyses were entered in a single step with the primary outcome of hypertension status (yes/no). The model was validated internally by splitting the data into Emirati and non-Emirati populations. RESULTS A total of 2,533 subjects were studied. The significant risk factors for hypertension identified were male sex, older age (≥40 years), education level, body mass index, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidaemia. The model showed a high discrimination ability between individuals with and without hypertension, with an area under the curve of 0.77 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.75 to 0.79), excellent sensitivity (81.0%; 95% CI, 71.9 to 88.2) and moderate specificity (56.0%; 95% CI, 45.7 to 65.9). CONCLUSIONS The model developed by this study is simple, convenient, and based on readily available demographic and medical characteristics. This risk score model could support initial hypertension screening and provide an effective tool for targeted lifestyle counselling and prevention programs.

Abstract
AIMS The aim is to assess the association and population attributable fraction (PAF) of multiple risk factors combination for diabetes and hypertension among adults in the Northeast region of India. METHODS Data used is from the Indian Demographic Health Survey conducted in 2015-16. The study comprised 107, 766 respondents (95,153 females and 12, 613 males) aged 15-49 years. We examined four modifiable risk factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, aerated drinks consumption, and overweight or obesity. PAF was calculated using the relative risk from the multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS Overweight or obesity in conjunction with smoking was associated with 43.9 % of patients with diabetes. Smoking in conjunction with alcohol and overweight or obesity contributed to 53% of patients with diabetes (PAF = 53 %). The three risk factors combination (i.e., smoking, alcohol, and overweight or obesity) is associated with the most hypertension cases (PAF = 50.7 %). Experiencing all four risk factors is associated with 50.3 % of patients with hypertension. In women, the four-risk combination contributed the most hypertension cases (PAF = 46.8 %). CONCLUSIONS Overweight or obesity was the single most significant factor leading to hypertension and diabetes among the study population. Also, smoking, alcohol, and overweight or obesity together are prominent risk factors for hypertension and diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is the most common thyroid dysfunction, and its relationship with blood pressure (BP) has been controversial. The aim of the study was to analyze the association between SCH and newly-diagnosed hypertension. METHODS Based on data from the Thyroid disease, Iodine nutrition and Diabetes Epidemiology (TIDE) study, 49,433 euthyroid individuals and 7,719 SCH patients aged ≥18 years were enrolled. Patients with a history of hypertension or thyroid disease were excluded. SCH was determined by manufacturer reference range. Overall hypertension and stage 1 and 2 hypertension were diagnosed according to the guidelines issued by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association in 2017. RESULTS The prevalence of overall hypertension (48.7%), including stage 1 (28.9%) and 2 (19.8%) hypertension, increased significantly in SCH patients compared with euthyroid subjects. With elevated serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level, the hypertension prevalence also increased significantly from the euthyroid to different SCH subgroups, which was more profound in females or subjects aged <65 years. The age- and sex-specific regression analysis further demonstrated the same trends in the general population and in the 1:1 propensity matched population. Similarly, several BP components (i.e., systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial BP) were positively associated with TSH elevation, and regression analysis also confirmed that all BP components were closely related with SCH in female subjects aged <65 years. CONCLUSION The prevalence of hypertension increases for patients with SCH. SCH tends to be associated with hypertension and BP components in females younger than 65 years.

Abstract
Objective: The critical values in health checkup play a key role in preventing chronic diseases and different types of cancer. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence, association relation, and dynamic evolution of critical values in health checkups at a large physical examination center in China. Methods: Herein, we chose 33,639 samples of physical examiners from January 2017 to December 2019. After strict exclusion processes, combined with the critical values in health checkup reporting data, 4,721 participants with at least one critical value were included. We first defined a critical value list for laboratory test, imaging, cervical cancer screening, electrocardiogram, and health checkup informed on site, and then performed a cross-sectional study to analyze the distribution and significance of critical values of 4,721 participants from different views and the association relation of 628 participants with more than one critical value and a retrospective cohort study to analyze the incidence and dynamic evolution of critical values based on 2,813 participants attending the physical examination from 2017 to 2019. Results: A total of 4,721 participants were included in the retrospective study. The prevalence of 10 critical values from 33,639 participants was over 0.6%. The critical values of obesity, hypertension, Glucose_T, Liver_T, Kidney_T, Lipid_T, Urine_T, and Head_CT were significantly increased in men (P < 0.05), whereas the results were the opposite for the Blood_T and Thyroid_US (P < 0.01). The prevalence trend of critical values increased along with age, where the prevalence of men was higher than that of women under 60 years old (P < 0.01), while the prevalence of women increased by four times and exceeded the prevalence of men above 70 years old. Association relation analysis identified 16 and 6 effective rules for men and women, respectively, where the critical values of Urine_T and Glucose_T played the central roles. Furthermore, a retrospective dynamic evolution analysis found that the incidence of new critical values was about 10%, the incidence of persistent critical values was about 50%, and that most of the effective evolution paths tended to no critical values for men and women. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study provides a new perspective to explore the population health status using the critical value reporting data in a physical examination center, which can assist in decision-making by health management at the population level and in the prevention and treatment of various types of cancer and chronic diseases at the individual level.

Abstract
Background This study examines the socioeconomic differentials in trends in the prevalence of hypertension and pre-hypertension and hypertension awareness, treatment, and control in rural Southwestern China. Methods Two cross-sectional interviews and health examination surveys were administered in rural Yunnan Province, including 6,350 consenting participants in 2009 and 6,359 consenting participants in 2016 (aged ≥ 35 years). Participant demographics, socioeconomic status (SES), and ethnicity, along with information about hypertension awareness, treatment, and control, were collected using similar questionnaires in the two surveys. The participants’ blood pressure levels were also measured. Results From 2009 to 2016, the prevalence of hypertension substantially increased from 28.4% to 39.5% (P < 0.01), and awareness and control rose from 42.2 and 25.8% to 53.1 (P < 0.01) and 30.6% (P < 0.05), respectively. Although people with a higher education level also had higher awareness and control rates than the lower education level ones, there were no conspicuous differences in the improvement of awareness and control between publics with different education levels over the 7 years studied. Increases were observed in both rates of awareness and control in people with a high level of income (P < 0.01). However, only the awareness rate increased in participants with a low level of income. Furthermore, the prevalence (P < 0.01) and treatment (P < 0.05) of hypertension were higher in the Han people than in ethnic minorities. Conclusions Individual SES has clear associations with trends in the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension. Future interventions to improve hypertension prevention and control should be tailored to address individual SES.

Abstract
Background This study examines the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and the prevalence of hypertension among elderly individuals in rural Southwest China. Methods A cross-sectional survey of 4833 consenting adults aged ≥ 60 years in rural regions of Yunnan Province, China, was conducted in 2017. Data on individual socioeconomic status, sleep quality, physical activity level, and family history of hypertension were collected with a standardized questionnaire. Blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, height, weight, and waist circumference were also measured. An individual socioeconomic position (SEP) index was constructed using principal component analysis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was applied to analyse the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and the prevalence of hypertension. Results The overall prevalence of hypertension was 50.6% in the study population. Body fat distribution, including measures of obesity and central obesity, had the greatest total effect on hypertension (0.21), followed by family history of hypertension (0.14), biological sex (0.08), sleep quality (− 0.07), SEP (− 0.06), physical inactivity (0.06), and diabetes (0.06). Body fat distribution, SEP, and family history of hypertension had both direct and indirect effects on hypertension, whereas physical inactivity, diabetes, and sleep quality were directly associated with the prevalence of hypertension. Biological sex was indirectly associated with the prevalence of hypertension. Conclusions SEP, body fat distribution, physical inactivity, diabetes, and sleep quality critically influence the prevalence of hypertension. Future interventions to prevent and control hypertension should give increased attention to individuals with low SEP and should focus on controlling diabetes and obesity, increasing physical activity levels, and improving quality of sleep among older adults aged ≥ 60 years in rural Southwest China.

Trends in status of hypertension in rural northeast China: results from two representative cross-sectional surveys, 2013-2018. J Hypertens 2020; 37:1596-1605. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the long-term natural trends in the status of hypertension in rural northeast China from 2013 to 2018. METHODS Two successive cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Liaoning rural areas in 2013 and 2018, which included 10 753 and 10 926 participants aged at least 40 years from different villages, respectively. A multistage, stratified, and cluster random sampling method was used to ensure that the samples of the two studies were representative. Hypertension was defined as a mean SBP at least 140 mmHg or a mean DBP at least 90 mmHg, and/or self-reported use of antihypertensive medication within the past 2 weeks. The prevalence and control rate of hypertension were also estimated according to the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association high blood pressure guideline. RESULTS Overall, the age-standardized prevalence of hypertension increased from 52.3 to 53.6%, while the age-specified DBP level increased by 5.2% (82.4 vs. 86.7 mmHg) during the study period. However, the control rate unfortunately remained low (4.1 vs. 3.6%), despite unsatisfied awareness and treatment rates of hypertension in rural northeast China. Under the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guideline, the prevalence of hypertension increased from 73.9 to 79.1%; however, the control rate decreased sharply from 1.8 to 0.5% between 2013 and 2018. CONCLUSION Despite the high prevalence of hypertension during the past 5 years, blood pressure levels increased significantly, especially the DBP level. Awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension remained unacceptably low. Therefore, strategies targeting the management of hypertension should be emphasized in rural northeast China.

Abstract
Hypertension is a global public health issue and leading risk for death and disability. It is urgent to search novel methods predicting hypertension. Herein, we chose 73158 samples of physical examiners in central China from June 2008 to June 2018. After strict exclusion processes, 33570 participants with hypertension and 35410 healthy controls were included. We randomly chose 70% samples as the train set and the remaining 30% as the test set. Clinical parameters including age, gender, height, weight, body mass index, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, and creatinine were significantly increased, while high-density lipoprotein was decreased in the hypertension group versus controls. Nine optimal markers were identified by a logistic regression model, and achieved AUC value of 76.52% in the train set and 75.81% in the test set for hypertension. In conclusions, this study is the first to establish predicted models for hypertension using the logistic regression model in Central China, which provide risk factors and novel prediction method to predict and prevent hypertension.

Abstract
Objective This study is aimed at exploring the trends in the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in rural northeast China from 2008 to 2018. Methods Two successive cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Liaoning rural areas in 2008 and 2018, which included 131520 and 10926 representative participants aged ≥ 40 years, respectively. Results Overall, the age-standardized prevalence of hypertension increased from 44.7% to 53.6%, and male residents showed a faster pace of increase and a 2.1-fold increase than female residents (25.5% vs. 10.6%) from 2008 to 2018. Moreover, the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures increased by 9.0% and 4.1%, respectively, and the increase rates were greater in men than in women (9.2% vs. 8.9% and 5.3% vs. 3.5%, P < 0.05). Additionally, the prevalence of stage 2 and above hypertension was significantly higher in men than in women. However, the awareness, treatment, and control rates showed no improvement and remained unacceptably low. Control rates were 3.7% in 2008 and 3.6% in 2018. Even among individuals who received medical treatment, only 8.7% and 10.1% had controlled hypertension in 2008 and 2018, respectively. Conclusions The prevalence of hypertension and mean blood pressure increased steadily in the past 10 years in rural northeast China, especially in men. However, the awareness, treatment, and control rates of hypertension remained extremely low. Therefore, long-term comprehensive strategies are urgently needed to prevent further development of cardiovascular diseases in these areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with a high risk of early mortality and morbidity from hypertension. Even though Ethiopia is Africa's first country among the top five in the prevalence of DM, there is a paucity of data on hypertension and its associated factors among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of hypertension among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Debre Tabor General Hospital, 2019. METHODS AND MATERIALS An institution-based cross-sectional study was employed on 378 T2DM patients. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and analyzed by Stata 14. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify associated factors of hypertension among T2DM patients. Associated factors were declared at p < 0.05. RESULTS The prevalence of hypertension among T2DM patients was 59.5% (95% CI: 54.5-64.5). Stage 1 hypertension was the most common (30.95%). The odds of hypertension was higher among age group of 50-60 years (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=2.5, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.27-4.90)), patients from urban area (AOR = 2.8, 95% CI (1.08-7.18)), with longer duration of T2DM (AOR =1.16, 95% CI (1.08-1.25)), with BMI ≥25 kg/m2 (AOR = 3.2, 95% CI (1.71-5.96)), with poor glycemic control (AOR = 3.0, 95% CI (1.75-5.19)), and patients who were current cigarette smokers (AOR = 3.8, 95% CI (1.98-14.96)). CONCLUSION The prevalence of hypertension is high and the majority have poor blood pressure control. Hence, DM care providers and other health sector stakeholders have to work in collaboration to prevent it through designing appropriate strategies especially for those at higher risk of developing hypertension.

Abstract
Background Alcohol consumption is prevalent and alcohol-related problems are a considerable social issue in China. Over 17% of Chinese consume alcohol regularly. Exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTE) is associated with increased alcohol-related problems. Social support often buffers this association. This study examined the relationship between exposure to PTE and alcohol misuse and explored the moderating effect of social support on this relationship in a Chinese context. Methods Data were collected through face-to-face computer assisted interviews in a stratified cluster sample of 753 Chinese adults living in Guangzhou, China. The Life Events Checklist-5 (LEC-5), World Health Organization Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (WHO-AUDIT), and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) were used to measure trauma exposure, problematic alcohol use, and social support. Results Univariable logistic regression analyses indicated that trauma exposure (OR = 3.18; compared to non-exposure), increased depression (OR = 1.06), and perceived friend support (OR = 1.21), were associated with higher odds of problematic drinking. Multivariable models adjusting for potential confounders demonstrated that PTE and depression were associated with problematic drinking, but this was not the case for perceived friend support. Perceived friend support modified the effect of trauma exposure and was associated with increased odds of problematic drinking among those who reported high levels of depressive symptoms. Conclusion Social support may not always be a beneficial resource among those who experienced PTEs in a Chinese context. Further research is needed to better understand the role and function of different types of support, and for whom these associations are beneficial.

Abstract
Despite progress made to prevent and control hypertension, its prevalence has
persisted in many countries. This study examined the associations between
psychosocial factors and hypertension among Ghanaian non-migrants and migrants.
Data were drawn from the Research on Obesity and Diabetes among African Migrants
(RODAM) project. Findings show that among migrant women, those who experienced
periods of stress at home/work had higher odds of hypertension. Among
non-migrants, women with depression symptoms were more likely to be
hypertensive. Furthermore, there was a positive association between negative
life events and hypertension among non-migrant men. The findings highlight the
importance of psychosocial factors in addressing hypertension prevalence in
Ghanaian populations.

Abstract
Timely awareness of hypertension is among the most crucial components in reducing the burden of hypertension. However, there is limited information about the awareness of hypertension in northern China. Therefore, in this cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate the awareness of hypertension and its associated factors in the Jilin province in China; the study was conducted between July 2014 and December 2015 in four cities and four rural counties in the Jilin province as part of a national study. A stratified multistage random-sampling method was used to select a representative sample: a total of 15,206 participants aged ≥15 years were initially recruited, among which 14,956 were finally included in the survey. The awareness of hypertension in the Jilin province was found to be 42.3%. Moreover, the awareness of hypertension was associated with age, sex, region, marital status, body mass index, and family history of hypertension or coronary artery disease. Employment was associated with a lower awareness in rural areas, whereas high education was associated with a higher awareness in urban areas. Policies targeting specific subgroups may be helpful in increasing the awareness of hypertension in the Jilin province.

Abstract
Background To investigate the status of hypertension and related risk factor disparities between urban and rural areas of northeast China. Methods A multi-stage, stratified, and cluster random sampling method was used to conduct the cross-sectional survey in Liaoning Province in 2017-2019. Finally, included 18,796 participants (28.9% urban, 71.1% rural) aged ≥40 years. The prevalence and control rate of hypertension were estimated based on Chinese hypertension guidelines and the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guidelines. Results The mean age of the population was 60.4±9.9 years, and 61.0% were women. The overall prevalence of hypertension was 56.8%. Compared to urban areas, hypertension was more prevalent, but the awareness, treatment, and control rates were lower in rural areas (59.2 vs 50.2, 52.5% vs 47.0%, 46.9% vs 34.9%, and 11.4% vs 3.7%, P<0.001, respectively). Multivariate regression analysis identified that the lack of exercise (odds ratio (OR), 1.24; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-1.38) in rural areas, whereas overweight/obesity (OR, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.79-2.27) and alcohol consumption (OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.01-1.41) in urban areas were specific risk factors for hypertension, besides common risk factors. Under the 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines, the prevalence of hypertension was 80.6% (urban 76.6%, rural 82.2%), increased 1.4-fold compared with the current Chinese guidelines, with increased rates of 27.9% in urban areas and 25.7% in rural areas. Conclusion A highly diverse prevalence for hypertension was found between urban and rural areas in northeast China. Region-specific strategies targeting the prevention and management of hypertension should be highlighted.

Abstract
Background: Evidence has shown that the greater the accumulation of risk factors for stroke, the greater the risk of stroke. Early intervention in the accumulation of risk factors for stroke can effectively reduce the incidence of stroke. The study aimed to investigate the distribution of the number of certain risk factors for stroke (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, overweight and obesity, and diabetes) and to explore the cause of the accumulation of certain stroke risk factors. Methods: A total of 4,052 participants aged 40 years or older were selected by the multistage stratified cluster sampling method in Dehui City in Jilin province, China. Descriptive data analyses were conducted. Multiple regression analyses were used to explore the adjusted association between the accumulation of key stroke risk factors and subjects' lifestyle and demographic characteristics. Results: Overall, 84.1% of the participants in this study had one or more of the four certain risk factors for stroke. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of having ≥1, ≥2, and ≥3 key stroke risk factors were 1.627 (1.258, 2.103), 1.446 (1.209, 1.728), and 1.394 (1.164, 1.670), respectively, for males compared to females. Similarly, the ORs and 95% CIs of having ≥1, ≥2, and ≥3 key stroke risk factors were 1.227 (1.009, 1.492), 1.256 (1.096, 1.442), and 1.450 (1.262, 1.667), respectively, for partially salty diets compared to normal diets. Compared to people who did not exercise regularly, the ORs and 95% CIs of having ≥1, ≥2, and ≥3 key stroke risk factors were 0.693 (0.544, 0.883), 0.800 (0.679, 0.944), and 0.775 (0.659, 0.913), respectively, for people who regularly exercised. Compared to people who without a family history of cerebrovascular diseases, the ORs and 95% CIs were 1.418 (1.162, 1.732), 1.327 (1.154, 1.525), and 1.209 (1.050, 1.393), for people who with it. Conclusions: Male, partially salty diets, and family history of cerebrovascular diseases were risk factors for the accumulation of certain stroke risk factors while regular physical exercise was a protective factor.

Abstract
Objective: The onset of essential hypertension is the result of a combination of genetic factors and the environment. The nuclear factor (NF)-κB1-94ins/del ATTG locus polymorphism is associated with the occurrence of various diseases. The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between the NF-κB1-94ins/del ATTG locus polymorphism and the risk of hypertension in the Chinese Han population. Methods: A total of 585 Chinese Han patients with essential hypertension and 585 Chinese Han healthy volunteers were recruited. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was performed to analyze the genotype of the NF-κB1-94ins/del ATTG locus in all the subjects. Results: For the NF-κB1-94ins/del ATTG locus, the dominant (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.13-1.54, P < 0.001), recessive (adjusted OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.02-1.32, P = 0.03) and additive (adjusted OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.03-1.36, P = 0.01) models showed significant increase in the risk of hypertension. The NF-κB1-94ins/del ATTG locus II genotype was an independent risk factor for hypertension (OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 0.78-1.69, P = 0.02). The interaction between the NF-κB1-94ins/del ATTG locus polymorphism and BMI, alcohol consumption, and diabetes significantly increased the risk of hypertension (OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.26-1.86, P < 0.01). Conclusion: The NF-κB1-94ins/del ATTG polymorphism is an independent risk factor for essential hypertension. The NF-κB1-94ins/del ATTG locus, obesity, drinking, and diabetes also interact to yield a higher risk of hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is a significant global public health problem and an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to determine treatment and control rates of hypertension and to explore related risk factors by urban and rural areas. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 14,956 participants (≥ 15 years) was conducted in Jilin Province, China from July 2014 to December 2015 using questionnaire forms and physical measurements. RESULTS Total rates of hypertension treatment, control, and controlled blood pressure among treated subjects were 31.7%, 8.8%, and 27.9% in the Jilin Province. Rates of hypertension treatment, control, and controlled blood pressure among treated subjects were 35.9%, 13.7%, and 38.3% in urban areas and 28.4%, 5.0%, and 17.5% in rural areas, respectively. Higher treatment of hypertension was associated with older age, female sex, other races (except Han), and higher body fat percentage in both areas. Among urban residents, higher education was additionally associated with higher treatment of hypertension; among rural residents, a family history of coronary artery disease and unemployment were associated with higher treatment of hypertension. Higher control of hypertension was associated with unemployment, married status, higher education, healthy body mass index, lower abdominal waist circumference, non-smoking status, and lower visceral adiposity index in urban residents; higher control of hypertension was associated with younger age in rural residents. CONCLUSION Treatment and control rates of hypertension in urban and rural areas were lower than the national average; blood pressure control in patients taking antihypertensive drugs needs further improvement.
