Abstract
Background: Patients with coronary artery disease have an increased risk for developing vascular cognitive impairment. Endothelial function is often diminished and has been associated with lower cognitive performance in these patients. The link between endothelial function and cognition in coronary artery disease is not fully understood. Angiogenesis may play a role in mediating the association between endothelial function and cognition since angiogenic processes rely heavily on the endothelium. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine if markers of angiogenesis mediate the relationship between endothelial function and cognition in coronary artery disease patients. Methods: In 50 participants with coronary artery disease, endothelial function was assessed using peripheral arterial tonometry. Vascular endothelial growth factor (pro-angiogenic) and endostatin (anti-angiogenic) were measured in peripheral serum samples. Cognition was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. A mediation analysis, using a bias corrected inferential bootstrapping method with 10,000 permutations, was used to determine if vascular endothelial growth factor or endostatin mediated an association between peripheral arterial tonometry measures and cognitive performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Results: Endostatin, but not vascular endothelial growth factor, mediated a relationship between endothelial function and cognitive performance when controlling for total years of education, body mass index, coronary artery bypass graft, stent, diabetes, and diuretic use. This analysis was also significant when delayed recall was substituted for the overall score on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Conclusion: These results suggest that endostatin mediates an association between endothelial function and cognitive performance in coronary artery disease.

Abstract
Epicardial fat, a local visceral fat depot surrounded by visceral pericardial sac, surrounds the coronary arteries for most of their course and may contribute to the development of coronary atherosclerosis by local production of inflammatory cytokines. Some studies on non-invasive measurement of epicardial fat mass have shown that epicardial fat mass is associated with the increased incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), onset and progression of coronary plaque, mainly including major adverse cardiovascular events, myocardial ischemia, and atrial fibrillation. In the present study the correlation of adiponectin, chemerin, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with the epicardial fat volume in patients with coronary artery disease was explored, and the risk factors for vascular remodeling of CAD patients were analyzed. A total of 50 CAD patients, treated in Chongzuo People's Hospital from August 2017 to September 2018, were enrolled as the observation group, and further 50 healthy individuals, who underwent physical examinations in the hospital at the same period, were enrolled as the control group. RT-qPCR was adopted to detect the expression levels of adiponectin, chemerin and VEGF in the two groups, a 64-slice dual-source CT to detect epicardial fat volume, and Pearson's correlation to analyze adiponectin, chemerin, VEGF and epicardial fat volume. Logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the risk factors for vascular remodeling in CAD patients, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to analyze the value of indexes with multifactorial significance in vascular remodeling. The observation group showed obviously larger epicardial fat volume than the control group (P<0.001), lower adiponectin expression than the control group (P<0.001), and higher chemerin and VEGF expression than the control group (P<0.001). In the observation group, adiponectin expression decreased with the increase of epicardial fat volume (P<0.001), while the expression of chemerin and VEGF increased with the increase of epicardial fat volume (P<0.001). Remodeling occurred in 27 of the 50 patients. ROC curve analysis showed that the areas under the curves of adiponectin, chemerin, VEGF and epicardial fat volume were 0.697, 0.652, 0.696 and 0.689, respectively. Epicardial fat volume, adiponectin, chemerin and VEGF are independent risk factors for vascular remodeling and the expression of adiponectin, chemerin and VEGF can reflect epicardial fat volume.

Abstract
Background: The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), as an angiogenic cytokine, binds endothelial cell receptors and stimulates angiogenesis and collateral formation. We evaluated the association between VEGF plasma levels and the gene polymorphism rs699947 and the formation of coronary collaterals in patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: A total of 195 patients with ≥70% narrowing in at least 1 coronary vessel (according to coronary angiography) were included in the study. The presence of the rs699947 polymorphism within the promoter of the VEGF gene was investigated using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The plasma VEGF concentration was quantified via the ELISA method. The Rentrop method was used to grade the extent of collateral development. Results: There was no significant difference in VEGF levels between the groups with good and poor collaterals. The frequency of the A allele of rs699947 was found to be higher in the patients with good collaterals than in those with poor collaterals (P=0.014). The odds ratio of good collaterals for AA was 2.67 (P=0.025) when compared with the CC genotype. Further, our additive model revealed an association between the rs699947 polymorphism and collateral formation (OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.05-3.65, P=0.033). Conclusion: The rs699947 polymorphism might be a novel genetic factor affecting collateral development in Iranian patients with coronary artery disease.

Abstract
In model organisms, over 2,000 genes have been shown to modulate aging, the collection of which we call the ‘gerontome’. Although some individual aging-related genes have been the subject of intense scrutiny, their analysis as a whole has been limited. In particular, the genetic interaction of aging and age-related pathologies remain a subject of debate. In this work, we perform a systematic analysis of the gerontome across species, including human aging-related genes. First, by classifying aging-related genes as pro- or anti-longevity, we define distinct pathways and genes that modulate aging in different ways. Our subsequent comparison of aging-related genes with age-related disease genes reveals species-specific effects with strong overlaps between aging and age-related diseases in mice, yet surprisingly few overlaps in lower model organisms. We discover that genetic links between aging and age-related diseases are due to a small fraction of aging-related genes which also tend to have a high network connectivity. Other insights from our systematic analysis include assessing how using datasets with genes more or less studied than average may result in biases, showing that age-related disease genes have faster molecular evolution rates and predicting new aging-related drugs based on drug-gene interaction data. Overall, this is the largest systems-level analysis of the genetics of aging to date and the first to discriminate anti- and pro-longevity genes, revealing new insights on aging-related genes as a whole and their interactions with age-related diseases.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is currently diagnosed by the co-presence of at least three of the five following abnormalities: abdominal obesity, dysglycaemia, elevated serum triglycerides, low high-density cholesterol (HDL) and finally elevated blood pressure. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This review is on the associations between MetS and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF induces migration and proliferation of endothelial cells (ECs), increases vascular permeability and has a role in tumor growth, adipose tissue expansion, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Circulating levels of VEGFs are elevated in obese individuals and it has also been suggested that VEGF is secreted from adipose tissues, especially from intra-abdominal adipose tissue. There is abundant evidence to support that poor glycemic control in diabetic patients is associated with increased plasma VEGF, which in turn may cause hypertension and several vascular complications in diabetic patients. Circulating VEGF levels are increased in children and young adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus and middle-aged diabetic patients with proliferative retinopathy. It has been revealed that plasma VEGF increases in patients with hyperlipidemia and may trigger the development of atherosclerosis. It can be concluded that there is a positive association between VEGF and components of MetS. Because of the importance of this relationship, more investigations are needed in this field.

Abstract
Cytokines play a key role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of current study was to investigate the relationship between the serum concentrations of 12 cytokines with mortality and extent of CAD in individuals undergoing angiography and healthy controls. 342 CAD patients were recruited and divided into 2 groups: those with ≥50% occlusion in at least one coronary artery [Angiography (+)] or <50% obstruction in coronary arteries [Angiography (-)]. Also 120 healthy subjects were enrolled as control group. Lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, body mass index, and blood pressure were evaluated in all the subjects. An Evidence Investigator® was used for measuring 12 cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, MCP-1, IFN-γ, EGF, VEGF) using sandwich chemiluminescent assays. Univariate analysis, multivariate regression models, ROC, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used for exploring the candidate markers in CAD patients. Serum level of IFN-γ, IL-4, MCP-1, EGF, IL-6, and IL-8 were markedly higher in angiogram-positive patients, while VEGF concentrations were significantly (P < 0.05) lower, compared to control group. ROC analysis for MCP-1 showed that a cut-off of 61.95 pg/mL had 91% sensitivity and 91% specificity for predicting CAD patients. Moreover, >2.16 pg/mL IL-6 had a > 94% sensitivity and 70% specificity in predicting 2 years mortality in the subjects with a serum MCP-1 > 61.95 pg/ mL, and patients having IL-6/MCP-1 combination had a shorter survival.Our findings demonstrate that CAD patients with serum MCP-1 and IL-6 levels of >61.95 and >2.16 pg/mL had a higher mortality with 94.1% sensitivity and 70.5% specificity for predicting mortality in CAD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients in the stable phase after myocardial infarction (MI) has not yet been explored. Therefore, we compared the values of VEGF in post-MI patients with those obtained in healthy controls. Furthermore, we investigated whether the values of VEGF correlate to either inflammation markers or the atherosclerotic burden. METHODS 41 male patients (on average 44 years old) in the stable phase after MI (on average 20.5 months after MI) were recruited, while 25 healthy age-matched males served as controls. Plasma levels of VEGF and several markers of inflammation were measured by standard procedures. The atherosclerotic burden was determined by the angiographic severity of coronary atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction (measured by ultrasound measurement of the flow mediated dilation of the brachial artery), the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery and the ankle-brachial pressure index. RESULTS VEGF values were significantly elevated in post-MI patients compared to the controls (53.8 ± 42.7 pg/ml vs. 36.3 ± 8.9 pg/ml, p = 0.014). The elevated VEGF values significantly correlated to the (increased) values of the inflammatory molecules interleukin 6 and 8 (r = 0.37, p = 0.017; and r = 0.45, p = 0.003; respectively). In contrast, no correlation was found between VEGF and the parameters of the atherosclerotic burden, although FMD and IMT were significantly impaired in patients. CONCLUSIONS We found that plasma levels of VEGF are increased in the stable phase after MI and correlate with inflammation cytokines, but not with the atherosclerotic burden. Thus, this suggests that increased levels of VEGF are a part of ongoing inflammatory activity. Since VEGF in these patients stimulates neovascularization of inflamed plaques and induces their destabilization, the VEGF level can have an important negative prognostic value. Clearly, further studies are needed to clarify the role of VEGF as a prognostic marker.

Abstract
We examined the longitudinal changes of VEGF levels after percutaneous coronary intervention for predicting major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. VEGF was measured in 94 CAD patients' serum before revascularization, 1-month and 1-year after. Independently of clinical presentation, patients had lower VEGF concentration than a cohort of healthy subjects (median, IQ: 15.9, 9.0–264 pg/mL versus 419, 212–758 pg/mL; P < 0.001) at baseline. VEGF increased to 1-month (median, IQ: 276, 167–498 pg/mL; P < 0.001) and remained steady to 1-year (median, IQ: 320, 173–497 pg/mL; P < 0.001) approaching control levels. Drug eluting stent apposition and previous medication intake produced a less steep VEGF evolution after intervention (P < 0.05). Baseline VEGF concentration <40.8 pg/mL conveyed increased risk for MACE in a 5-year follow-up. Results reflect a positive role of VEGF in recovery and support its importance in CAD prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impairment of the tissue kallikrein (KLK1)-kinin system (KKS) may result in atheroma development. However, it remains unclear if the KKS correlates with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS KLK1, VEGF and hs-CRP plasma levels were measured in 100 patients newly diagnosed with CAD and 33 CAD-free controls. Patients were followed-up for the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) for 8months to 2y. Gene expression of KLK1, CD105 and CD68 was assessed in human coronary endarterectomy specimens. RESULTS Patients with CAD and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) had significantly elevated KLK1 levels. In addition, the concentration of hs-CRP was increased in ACS patients. A strong positive correlation between plasma KLK1 and the severity of CAD was also demonstrated, suggesting that high KLK1 levels are an independent predictor for CAD. MACE during follow-up significantly correlated with KLK1 levels in the ACS group. Unstable coronary plaques demonstrated markedly increased KLK1 levels, macrophage infiltration and high microvessel density. Additionally, KLK1 staining primarily colocalized with macrophages. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, plasma KLK1 levels were a useful predictor for the presence and extent of CAD. More extensive studies are, however, necessary in order to validate these findings.

Abstract
Background Women with a history of mainly severe and early onset preeclampsia have an increased risk of future cardiovascular disease. During these complicated pregnancies increased levels of anti-angiogenic factors can be found. We hypothesize that women with a history of severe very early onset preeclampsia still have increased levels of these biomarkers years after this pregnancy, resulting in increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Methods Twenty women with severe early onset preeclampsia before 24 weeks' gestation, who delivered between 1993–2003 in a tertiary referral centre and twenty matched controls with uncomplicated pregnancies and healthy term infants, were addressed for participation in the study. Venous plasma samples were analyzed for basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), placental growth factor (PLGF), soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), E- and P-selectin, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-3 (sICAM-3) and thrombomodulin by ELISA. Results Sixteen case subjects and 18 control subjects consented participation. The median time interval index pregnancy to study was 9.4 and 9.7 years for cases and controls, respectively. Median levels for cases-controls (p-value) were not different; bFGF: 17.43–11.11 pg/mL (0.33), sFlt-1: 102.98–101.92 pg/ml (0.84), PLGF: 3.57–4.20 pg/mL (0.38), VEGF: 64.05–45.72 pg/mL (0.73), E-selectin: 5.11–4.68 ng/mL (0.20), P-selectin: 85.35–71.69 ng/mL (0.69), sICAM-3: 0.42–0.63 ng/mL (0.41) and Thrombomodulin: 0.92–0.93 ng/mL (0.59). Conclusion There were no differences in angiogenic biomarkers between women with a history of severe early onset preeclampsia versus uncomplicated pregnancy almost 10 years later, suggesting that these angiogenic factors will not contribute to the early detection of women at risk for future cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading killer in the United States. Patients with severe CAD and ischemia have worse prognosis. Therefore expansion of biomarker research, to identify at-risk individuals and explain the complex biology between cardiovascular growth factors and atherosclerosis is needed. Neuregulin-1β (NRG-1β) is a myocardial stress activated growth and survival factor released from endocardial and endothelial cells. NRG-1β is essential for cardiovascular development and a regulator of angiogenesis. We postulated that plasma and serum levels of NRG-1β would vary in relation to CAD severity and the presence of stress-induced ischemia. METHODS We measured serum and plasma levels of NRG-1β and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in 60 patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. CAD severity was calculated from angiographic results using a modified Duke jeopardy score. RESULTS Serum NRG-1β (sNRG-1β), plasma NRG-1β (pNRG-1β), serum VEGF, and plasma VEGF were detectable in the majority of patients. The pNRG-1β levels were approximately two-fold higher than sNRG-1β. Both sNRG-1β and pNRG-1β correlated inversely with CAD severity. pNRG-1β levels were statistically higher in patients with stress-induced ischemia denoted by a positive myocardial perfusion imaging study that correlated with angiographic findings (P=0.02). CONCLUSION Both sNRG-1β and pNRG-1β correlated inversely with angiographic severity of CAD. pNRG-1β levels were two-fold higher than serum and were higher in patients with stress-induced ischemia. Therefore we conclude that plasma is the optimal source for the further exploration of the biological significance of NRG-1β as a biomarker of CAD severity and ischemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies strongly suggest a bidirectional positive relationship between mood and cardiovascular disorders (CVD). Reduced numbers of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (cEPCs) are associated with elevated risks of CVD. Previously we demonstrated that patients with a current episode of major depression (MDE) have a decreased number of cEPCs. The role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) has been demonstrated in the etiopathogenesis of depression. In addition these cytokines are also involved in regulation of the vascular system. This suggests that VEGF and/or TNF may also mediate the elevated risk of CVD associated with mood disorders. METHODS In the current investigation, which has a self-controlled study design, we examined changes in VEGF and TNF levels and--for the first time--changes in cEPC number during recovery from MDE. RESULTS Twenty-four patients with MDE were enrolled. The severity of their depressive symptoms improved significantly during the one-month treatment period (~50% decrease in MADRS score; P≤0.001). We did not find significant differences between baseline and end-point levels of VEGF, TNF and the number of cEPCs. CONCLUSION Our negative result for alteration in the number of cEPCs in the course of recovery from MDE raises several questions. Before discarding the number of cEPCs as a possible marker of depression--and/or elevated CV risk associated with it--our results would require confirmation in larger samples. Our results for TNF and VEGF do not contradict the findings of prior studies, since these were controversial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), a soluble receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and vascular disease has not been established, so this study aimed to elucidate the association between sFlt-1 and the progression of carotid intima - media thickness (IMT) in hypertensive patients. METHODS AND RESULTS The 120 hypertensive patients under medical control were enrolled and 112 completed the study (age 59 ± 9 years, 57 females). Plasma VEGF and sFlt-1 levels were measured at enrollment. At baseline and 24-month visit, carotid IMT was measured and the association between sFlt-1 and IMT progression was assessed by linear regression. At baseline, age (r=0.186) and low level of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C <40 mg/dl, r=0.214) were significantly related to carotid IMT. Over the 24 months, carotid IMT increased from 0.670 ± 0.089 mm to 0.696 ± 0.095 mm. There was a positive correlation between sFlt-1 tertiles and IMT change (P=0.05 by ANOVA). Upon multivariate analysis, log-transformed sFlt-1 level (β=0.137, P=0.003) and low HDL-C (β=0.048, P=0.04) were identified as predictors of IMT progression, independent of other confounding variables. CONCLUSIONS High sFlt-1 level is predictive of carotid IMT progression in hypertensive patients. Low HDL-C level was also associated with IMT change. These observations support a high sFlt-1 level being indicative of progression of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Background: The association between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1), and coronary artery disease (CAD) was investigated. Methods: We enrolled 112 hypertensive patients with proven CAD and 112 hypertensive controls matched for age and gender. The severity of CAD was assessed by the most severe clinical presentation of CAD in patients’ history and by the number of diseased vessels. Results: Vascular endothelial growth factor level was lower, whereas sFlt-1 level was higher in the CAD group compared to the controls. Diabetes mellitus (P = .001), smoking (P = .004), and higher sFlt-1 level (P = .01) were independently associated with CAD. Younger age (P = .02), smoking (P = .049), and higher VEGF levels (P = .02) were independently associated with a history of myocardial infarction (MI), whereas higher sFlt-1 level (P = .01) was independently associated with multivessel disease. Conclusion: Plasma sFlt-1 levels are positively associated with the presence of CAD and are associated with angiographical severity of CAD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent angiogenic growth factor, but its role in atherogenesis is still unclear. Our goal was to study whether three variants of the VEGF gene, previously associated with VEGF production, are linked to atherosclerosis defined as carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and as the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). MATERIAL AND METHODS Three VEGF gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (-2578A>C rs699947, -634C>G rs2010963 and +936C>T rs3025039) were genotyped in 516 control subjects of the OPERA (Oulu Project Elucidating Risk of Atherosclerosis) cohort and in 251 survivors of AMI. In the OPERA cohort, the genotyped SNPs were analysed for their association with IMT. The SNPs were also analysed for their association with the risk of AMI, a complication of advanced atherosclerosis. In addition, haplotype frequencies and their associated effects on IMT and on the risk of AMI were estimated. RESULTS None of the single genotyped polymorphisms was significantly associated with overall IMT or with the risk of AMI. However, the haplotype CCC was associated with higher overall IMT without plaques in women (p = 0.01, haplotypic effect +0.03 mm), the haplotype CCT with higher IMT without plaques in the internal carotid artery in men (p = 0.001, +0.11), while the haplotype AGT was associated with reduced AMI risk (p = 0.015, OR = 0.46). CONCLUSIONS Variation in the VEGF gene is weakly associated with IMT and the risk of AMI, but the effect can only be observed when the information of the SNPs is combined by constructing haplotypes.

Abstract
The discovery of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) and their receptors has considerably improved the understanding of the development and function of endothelial cells. Each member of the VEGF family appears to have a specific function: VEGF-A induces angiogenesis (i.e. growth of new blood vessels from preexisting ones), placental growth factor mediates both angiogenesis and arteriogenesis (i.e. the formation of collateral arteries from preexisting arterioles), VEGF-C and VEGF-D act mainly as lymphangiogenic factors. The study of the biology of these endothelial growth factors has allowed a major progress in the comprehension of the genesis of the vascular system and its abnormalities observed in various pathologic conditions (atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease). The role of VEGF in the atherogenic process is still unclear, but actual evidence suggests both detrimental (development of a neoangiogenetic process within the atherosclerotic plaque) and beneficial (promotion of collateral vessel formation) effects. VEGF and other angiogenic growth factors (fibroblast growth factor), although initially promising in experimental studies and in initial phase I/II clinical trials in patients with ischemic heart disease or peripheral arterial occlusive disease, have subsequently failed to show significant therapeutic improvements in controlled clinical studies. Challenges still remain about the type or the combination of angiogenic factors to be administered, the form (protein vs. gene), the route, and the duration of administration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in accelerated atherosclerosis in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). METHODS We have enrolled 80 SLE female patients and 80 age-matched healthy control females who underwent a structured interview, physical examination, routine laboratory tests, VEGF plasma level determination and B-mode ultrasonography of carotid arteries to determine carotid intima media thickness (IMT). Framingham risk factors for cardiovascular events were also calculated and VEGF plasma levels were correlated with traditional and nontraditional cardiovascular risk factors. RESULTS SLE was significantly associated with higher mean IMT values (0.74+/-0.15 mm versus 0.59+/-0.12 mm in controls, p<0.001) and higher mean plasma VEGF levels (307.9+/-292.2 pg/mL versus 120.7+/-118.4 pg/mL in controls, p<0.001) independently from age, smoking habits, and Framingham risk factors. A significant correlation was also found between IMT and VEGF values (r=0.25; p<0.001). CONCLUSION We show that SLE patients have increased mean IMT and VEGF values as compared with healthy age-matched controls and that IMT and VEGF values are independently and directly associated with SLE disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been known that ischemia or occlusion of coronary arteries in animal models increases the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); however, little is known about the relationship between coronary artery disease and VEGF in humans. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the relationships between the degree of coronary occlusion and plasma VEGF level as well as other risk factors, including age, weight, arterial blood pressure, cholesterol, triglyceride, blood glucose, and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in patients with established coronary artery disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our study group consisted of 77 patients. Of these, 38 patients had normal coronary angiography (control group; group C) and 39 had abnormal angiography (17 critical lesion; group CL, 22 noncritical lesion; non-CL group). RESULTS Plasma VEGF level was 116.95+/-30.12 pg/ml in the control group, 212.47+/-75.28 pg/ml in group CL, and 138.89+/-45.18 pg/ml in the non-CL group. Plasma VEGF level of group C was found to be lower than that of group CL (P<.05), but the difference between groups C and non-CL was insignificant (P>.05). However, logistic regression analysis showed that VEGF level of group CL was significantly higher (P<.001). There was a negative correlation between VEGF and haemoglobin (r=-0.58, P<.01), and positive correlation between VEGF and age (r=0.29, P<.04). There was no relationship between plasma VEGF level and other cardiac risk parameters. Group CL had a higher level of total and LDL-cholesterol levels. CONCLUSION Increased plasma VEGF levels in patients with coronary artery disease may point that the coronary lesion is critical, and VEGF increase in patients with established coronary artery disease may be used as an indicator of the need for revascularization.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been noted in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. To examine the usefulness of the serum concentration of VEGF as an index of atherosclerosis, we analyzed the serum VEGF concentrations in 443 adults who underwent a medical checkup. The mean serum VEGF concentration of men (229+/-147 pg/ml) was significantly higher than that of women (182+/-112 pg/ml). The platelet count showed a slight correlation with the serum VEGF concentration in both genders (men R=0.287, women R=0.296), corresponding with the results of experiments that platelets are the major source of VEGF in circulating peripheral blood. In men, the serum VEGF concentrations correlated with platelet counts, body fat percentages, leukocyte counts, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations (negative correlation). In the multiple regression analysis performed for men's serum VEGF concentrations, the decision coefficient (R2) was maximized (R2=0.173) when the leukocyte count, the body fat percentage, and the HDL-cholesterol concentration were taken into account besides the platelet count. Male smokers' serum VEGF concentrations were higher than non-smokers'. Smoking in men significantly affected the sex difference in the serum VEGF concentration, leukocyte count, and HDL-cholesterol concentration. We concluded that the serum VEGF concentration might be closely related to atherosclerosis accelerating factor, especially in men.

Abstract
The pleiotropic effects of statins, inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, have been recently extended to the modulation of angiogenesis. Here, to get more insight into the statins action, the authors have investigated the effect of atorvastatin on the expression of several angiogenic and inflammatory genes in human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs). Atorvastatin was proangiogenic at the dose of 10 nM, and antiangiogenic at the concentrations of 1 to 10 micro M. Moreover, these higher concentrations inhibited also the proliferation of HUVECs induced by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Lower doses of atorvastatin did not influence endothelial cell proliferation. Importantly, atorvastatin at the micromolar concentrations diminished the production of interleukin (IL)-8, a proinflammatory and proangiogenic chemokine, and inhibited the synthesis of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), a potent proinflammatory mediator. However, it decreased also the expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), the inhibitors of angiogenesis. Atorvastatin stimulated the expression of angiopoietin (Ang)-2 and moderately enhanced the expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), whereas heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) was not significantly affected. In conclusion, the present findings points to other angiogenesis-related effects of atorvastatin, which may be of relevance to the beneficial influence of statins in cardiovascular system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Both heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been shown to be involved in the progression of atherosclerosis. The relationship between HO-1 and VEGF gene expression and their proteins in endothelial cells from human atherosclerotic arterial specimens was investigated. DESIGN AND METHODS The study included seventeen human arterial specimens with early and six specimens with advanced atherosclerotic lesions. Ten specimens were obtained from healthy young adults undergoing arterial reconstruction for trauma and were considered as non-atherosclerotic control. HO-1 and VEGF expressions as well as HO activity and VEGF protein content were measured in isolated endothelial cells (ECs). RESULTS HO-1 expression and activity (5.3+/-2.1 nmol bilirubin/mg protein/h) were only present in ECs from advanced atherosclerotic lesions. VEGF expression was more strongly expressed in ECs from advanced lesion compared with early lesions and was absent in healthy arteries. VEGF protein (1.35+/-0.69 ng/mg) was only detected in advanced lesions. A significant positive correlation (r=0.9, p<0.01) exists between HO activity and VEGF protein content in ECs of advanced lesions. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that HO-1 expression and activity in ECs are present only in advanced atherosclerosis whereas, VEGF expression is present in early as well as in advanced atherosclerosis and the degree of its expression increases with severity of atherosclerosis. This study suggests an association between HO activity and VEGF protein in human ECs from advanced atherosclerotic lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endostatin are related to ischemic heart disease. This study investigated pericardial fluid and serum levels of VEGF and endostatin in patients with or without ischemic heart disease. METHODS A total of 39 patients (24 patients in the CAD group with significant coronary artery disease; 15 patients in the non-CAD group without coronary artery disease) undergoing open heart surgery were enrolled. In the CAD group, patients were classified according to good coronary collateralization (Group A; n = 11) or poor coronary collateralization (Group B; n = 13). Pericardial fluid and serum samples were obtained at the time of surgery. VEGF and endostatin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The levels of endostatin in both serum and pericardial fluid were significantly lower in the CAD group than in the non-CAD group (130.5 +/- 37.3 ng/mL vs. 172.4 +/- 37.8 ng/mL and 119.0 +/- 25.0 ng/mL vs. 143.0 +/- 23.5 ng/mL). The concentration of serum VEGF in the CAD group (92.6 +/- 18.2 pg/mL) was significantly higher than that in the non-CAD group (75.2 +/- 22.3 pg/mL). The concentration of serum VEGF in Group A (100.1 +/- 20.7 pg/mL) was significantly higher than that in Group B (84.3 +/- 12.4 pg/mL). The levels of pericardial fluid VEGF, serum and pericardial fluid endostatin were not significantly different between Groups A and B. CONCLUSION Patients with coronary artery disease have lower serum and pericardial fluid levels of endostatin and higher serum levels of VEGF. Serum level VEGF, but not endostatin, is associated with good or poor collateralization in patients with coronary artery disease.

Abstract
For most of the patients with cancer comorbidity had independent prognostic effect. This negative influence of comorbidity on survival of cancer might be due to several mechanisms: the increased risk of death due to the comorbid condition itself, more contra-indications for anti-cancer treatment, more indications for dose reduction and a higher rate of treatment-related complications, such as infections and cardiovascular events. It is known that in some chronic diseases (e.g., coronary artery disease, hypertension, and obesity) pro-angiogenic growth factors are increased compared to controls and mostly normalized after specific treatment. We propose that increased pro-angiogenic growth factor levels in cancer patients due to comorbidities may lead to the progression of the tumors and poor prognosis. Treatment of comorbidities besides the treatment of primary tumor may further increase effective management of cancer.
