Abstract
Gastrin is an important intragastrointestinal hormone, but reports on its regulation of feeding behavior in fish are still scarce. This study aimed to determine the feeding regulatory function of gastrin in sturgeon. In this study, a gastrin/cholecystokinin-like peptide was identified in the genomes of sturgeon and proved to be gastrin by evolutionary tree analysis. Tissue distribution of gastrin and its receptor, cholecystokinin receptor B (CCKRB), showed that both had high mRNA abundance in the hypothalamus and gastrointestinal tract. In the duodenum, gastrin and CCKRB mRNAs were reduced at 1 h of fasting, and both were also observed in the stomach and hypothalamus in response to changes in feeding status. Sulfated gastrin 17 is the major form of gastrin in vivo. Therefore, we investigated the effect of sulfated gastrin 17 on feeding by intraperitoneal injection into Siberian sturgeon using sulfated gastrin 17. The results showed that gastrin 17 significantly reduced the cumulative feeding of Siberian sturgeon in the short term (1, 3 and 6 h) and long term (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 days). Finally, we explored the potential mechanism of feeding inhibition after intraperitoneal injection of gastrin 17 for 7 consecutive days. The results showed that gastrin 17 treatment significantly increased the mRNA levels of anorexigenic peptides (cart, cck and pyy), while it had no significant effect on the mRNA abundance of orexigenic peptides (npy and agrp). In addition, gastrin 17 treatment significantly affected the expression of appetite signaling pathways in the hypothalamus, such that the mRNA expression of ampkα1 was significantly reduced, whereas the mRNA abundance of stat3, mtor and s6k was significantly increased. In conclusion, the present study confirmed the anorectic effect of gastrin on Siberian sturgeon.

Abstract
Fish body growth is a trait of major importance for individual survival and reproduction. It has implications in population, ecology, and evolution. Somatic growth is controlled by the GH/IGF endocrine axis and is influenced by nutrition, feeding, and reproductive-regulating hormones as well as abiotic factors such as temperature, oxygen levels, and salinity. Global climate change and anthropogenic pollutants will modify environmental conditions affecting directly or indirectly fish growth performance. In the present review, we offer an overview of somatic growth and its interplay with the feeding regulatory axis and summarize the effects of global warming and the main anthropogenic pollutants on these endocrine axes.

Abstract
Feeding and growth are two closely related and important physiological processes in living organisms. Studies in mammals have provided us with a series of characterizations of neuropeptides and their receptors as well as their roles in appetite control and growth. The central nervous system, especially the hypothalamus, plays an important role in the regulation of appetite. Based on their role in the regulation of feeding, neuropeptides can be classified as orexigenic peptide and anorexigenic peptide. To date, the regulation mechanism of neuropeptide on feeding and growth has been explored mainly from mammalian models, however, as a lower and diverse vertebrate, little is known in fish regarding the knowledge of regulatory roles of neuropeptides and their receptors. In recent years, the development of omics and gene editing technology has accelerated the speed and depth of research on neuropeptides and their receptors. These powerful techniques and tools allow a more precise and comprehensive perspective to explore the functional mechanisms of neuropeptides. This paper reviews the recent advance of omics and gene editing technologies in neuropeptides and receptors and their progresses in the regulation of feeding and growth of fish. The purpose of this review is to contribute to a comparative understanding of the functional mechanisms of neuropeptides in non-mammalians, especially fish.

Abstract
Sulfakinin (SK)/cholecystokinin (CCK)-type neuropeptides regulate feeding and digestion in protostomes (e.g. insects) and chordates. Here, we characterised SK/CCK-type signalling for the first time in a non-chordate deuterostome - the starfish Asterias rubens (phylum Echinodermata). In this species, two neuropeptides (ArSK/CCK1, ArSK/CCK2) derived from the precursor protein ArSK/CCKP act as ligands for an SK/CCK-type receptor (ArSK/CCKR) and these peptides/proteins are expressed in the nervous system, digestive system, tube feet, and body wall. Furthermore, ArSK/CCK1 and ArSK/CCK2 cause dose-dependent contraction of cardiac stomach, tube foot, and apical muscle preparations in vitro, and injection of these neuropeptides in vivo triggers cardiac stomach retraction and inhibition of the onset of feeding in A. rubens. Thus, an evolutionarily ancient role of SK/CCK-type neuropeptides as inhibitory regulators of feeding-related processes in the Bilateria has been conserved in the unusual and unique context of the extra-oral feeding behaviour and pentaradial body plan of an echinoderm.

Abstract
Neuropeptide Y family (NPY) is a potent orexigenic peptide and pancreatic polypeptide family comprising neuropeptide Y (Npy), peptide YYa (Pyya), and peptide YYb (Pyyb), which was previously known as peptide Y (PY), and tetrapod pancreatic polypeptide (PP), but has not been exhaustively documented in fish. Nonetheless, Npy and Pyy to date have been the key focus of countless research studies categorizing their copious characteristics in the body, which, among other things, include the mechanism of feeding behavior, cortical neural activity, heart activity, and the regulation of emotions in teleost. In this review, we focused on the role of neuropeptide Y gene (Npy) and peptide YY gene (Pyy) in teleost food intake. Feeding is essential in fish to ensure growth and perpetuation, being indispensable in the aquaculture settings where growth is prioritized. Therefore, a better understanding of the roles of these genes in food intake in teleost could help determine their feeding regime, regulation, growth, and development, which will possibly be fundamental in fish culture.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
The gut and brain are constantly communicating and influencing each other through neural, endocrine and immune signals in an interaction referred to as the gut–brain axis. Within this communication system, the gastrointestinal tract, including the gut microbiota, sends information on energy status to the brain, which, after integrating these and other inputs, transmits feedback to the gastrointestinal tract. This allows the regulation of food intake and other physiological processes occurring in the gastrointestinal tract, including motility, secretion, digestion and absorption. Although extensive literature is available on the mechanisms governing the communication between the gut and the brain in mammals, studies on this axis in other vertebrates are scarce and often limited to a single species, which may not be representative for obtaining conclusions for an entire group. This Review aims to compile the available information on the gut–brain axis in birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, with a special focus on its involvement in food intake regulation and, to a lesser extent, in digestive processes. Additionally, we will identify gaps of knowledge that need to be filled in order to better understand the functioning and physiological significance of such an axis in non-mammalian vertebrates.

Abstract
Cholecystokinin octapeptide with sulfate (CCK-8s) regulates feeding behavior and psychomotor activity. In rodents and goldfish, intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of CCK-8s decreases food intake and also induces anxiety-like behavior. The zebrafish has several merits for investigating the psychophysiological roles of neuropeptides. However, little is known about the brain localization of CCK and the behavioral action of CCK-8s in this species. Here we investigated the brain localization of CCK-like immunoreactivity and found that it was distributed throughout the brain. As CCK-like immunoreactivity was particularly evident in the ventral habenular nucleus, the interpeduncular nucleus and superior raphe, we subsequently examined the effect of zebrafish (zf) CCK-8s on psychomotor control. Since the zebrafish possesses two molecular forms of zfCCK-8s (zfCCKA-8s and zfCCKB-8s), two synthetic peptides were administered intracerebroventricularly at 1, 5 and 10 pmol g-1 body weight (BW). As the zebrafish shows a greater preference for the lower area of a tank than for to the upper area, we used this preference for assessment of anxiety-like behavior. ICV administration of zfCCKA-8 s or zfCCKB-8s at 10 pmol g-1 BW significantly shortened the time spent in the upper area. The actions of these peptides mimicked that of the central-type benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonist FG-7142 (an anxiogenic agent) at 10 pmol g-1 BW. The anxiogenic-like action of the two peptides was attenuated by treatment with the CCK receptor antagonist proglumide at 200 pmol g-1 BW. These results indicate that zfCCKA-8s and zfCCKB-8s potently induce anxiety-like behavior via the CCK receptor-signaling pathway in the zebrafish brain.

Abstract
Phoenixin is a 20-amino acid peptide (PNX-20) cleaved from the small integral membrane protein 20 (SMIM20), with multiple biological roles in mammals. However, its role in nonmammalian vertebrates is poorly understood. This research aimed to determine whether PNX-20 influences feeding and metabolism in zebrafish. The mRNAs encoding SMIM20 and its putative receptor, super conserved receptor expressed in brain 3 (SREB3), are present in both central and peripheral tissues of zebrafish. Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the presence of PNX-like immunoreactivity in the gut and in zebrafish liver (ZFL) cell line. We also found that short-term fasting (7 days) significantly decreased smim20 mRNA expression in the brain, gut, liver, gonads, and muscle, which suggests a role for PNX-20 in food intake regulation. Indeed, single intraperitoneal injection of 1,000 ng/g body wt PNX-20 reduced feeding in both male and female zebrafish, likely in part by enhancing hypothalamic cart and reducing hypothalamic/gut preproghrelin mRNAs. Furthermore, the present results demonstrated that PNX-20 modulates the expression of genes involved in glucose transport and metabolism in ZFL cells. In general terms, such PNX-induced modulation of gene expression was characterized by the upregulation of glycolytic genes and the downregulation of gluconeogenic genes. A kinetic study of the ATP production rate from both glycolytic and mitochondrial pathways demonstrated that PNX-20-treated ZFL cells exhibited significantly higher ATP production rate associated with glycolysis than control cells. This confirms a positive role for PNX-20 on glycolysis. Together, these results indicate that PNX-20 is an anorexigen with important metabolic roles in zebrafish.

Abstract
Nutritional Programming (NP) has been shown to counteract the negative effects of dietary plant protein (PP) by introducing PP at an early age towards enhancement of PP utilization during later life stages. This study explored the effect of NP and its induction time on growth, expression of appetite-stimulating hormones, and any morphological changes in the gut possibly responsible for improved dietary PP utilization. At 3 days post-hatch (dph) zebrafish were distributed into 12 (3 L) tanks, 100 larvae per tank. This study included four groups: 1) The control (NP-FM) group received fishmeal (FM)-based diet from 13–36 dph and was challenged with PP-based diet during 36–66 dph; 2) The NP-PP group received NP with dietary PP in larval stage via live food enrichment during 3–13 dph followed by FM diet during 13–36 dph and PP diet during 36–66 dph; 3) The T-NP group received NP between 13–23 dph through PP diet followed by FM diet during 23–36 dph and PP diet during 36–66 dph; and 4) The PP group received PP diet from 13–66 dph. During the PP challenge the T-NP group achieved the highest weight gain compared to control and PP. Ghrelin expression in the brain was higher in T-NP compared to NP-FM and NP-PP, while in the gut it was reduced in both NP-PP and T-NP groups. Cholecystokinin expression showed an opposite trend to ghrelin. The brain neuropeptide Y expression was lower in NP-PP compared to PP but not different with NP-FM and T-NP groups. The highest villus length to width ratio in the middle intestine was found in T-NP compared to all other groups. The study suggests that NP induced during juvenile stages improves zebrafish growth and affects digestive hormone regulation and morphology of the intestinal lining–possible mechanisms behind the improved PP utilization in pre-adult zebrafish stages.

Abstract
Endocrine factors regulate food intake and growth, two interlinked physiological processes critical for the proper development of organisms. Somatic growth is mainly regulated by growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I and IGF-II) that act on target tissues, including muscle, and bones. Peptidyl hormones produced from the brain and peripheral tissues regulate feeding to meet metabolic demands. The GH-IGF system and hormones regulating appetite are regulated by both internal (indicating the metabolic status of the organism) and external (environmental) signals. Among the external signals, the most notable are diet availability and diet composition. Macronutrients and micronutrients act on several hormone-producing tissues to regulate the synthesis and secretion of appetite-regulating hormones and hormones of the GH-IGF system, eventually modulating growth and food intake. A comprehensive understanding of how nutrients regulate hormones is essential to design diet formulations that better modulate endogenous factors for the benefit of aquaculture to increase yield. This review will discuss the current knowledge on nutritional regulation of hormones modulating growth and food intake in fish.

Abstract
Xenin, a highly conserved 25 amino acid peptide cleaved from the N-terminus of the coatomer protein alpha (COPA), is emerging as a food intake regulator in mammals and birds. To date, no research has been conducted on xenin biology in fish. This study aims to identify the copa mRNA encoding xenin in goldfish (Carassius auratus) as a model, to elucidate its regulation by feeding, and to describe the role of xenin on appetite. First, a partial sequence of copa cDNA, a region encoding xenin, was identified from goldfish brain. This sequence is highly conserved among both vertebrates and invertebrates. RT-qPCR revealed that copa mRNAs are widely distributed in goldfish tissues, with the highest levels detected in the brain, gill, pituitary and J-loop. Immunohistochemistry confirmed also the presence of COPA peptide in the hypothalamus and enteroendocrine cells on the J-loop mucosa. In line with its anorexigenic effects, we found important periprandial fluctuations in copa mRNA expression in the hypothalamus, which were mainly characterized by a gradually decrease in copa mRNA levels as the feeding time was approached, and a gradual increase after feeding. Additionally, fasting differently modulated the expression of copa mRNA in a tissue-dependent manner. Peripheral and central injections of xenin reduce food intake in goldfish. This research provides the first report of xenin in fish, and shows that this peptide is a novel anorexigen in goldfish.

Abstract
To explore the effect of CCK on food intake in Siberian sturgeon, cck cDNA sequence of 1005 bp was obtained, and cck mRNA possessed the highest expression in brain. The expressions of cck were significantly increased after feeding 1 and 3 h, while displaying significant decrease after fasting within 15 days in brain and duodenum. Re-feeding for 3 days induced cck level returned to basic level. Acute i.p. injection experiment showed 100 and 200 ng/g BW CCK8 inhibited the food intake in 0–1 h together with the cumulative food intake within 3 h. 7 days chronic i.p. injection of 100 and 200 ng/g BW CCK8, both daily food intake and cumulative food intake were significantly decreased. In addition, chronic i.p injection of CCK8 induced the expression of feeding related factors changes including cck, ucn3, cart, apelin, pyy and npy in respective organization. Moreover, as revealed by the results, Lorglumide, the CCK1R selective antagonist, effectively reversed the inhibitory effects of CCK8 on food intake and the levels of feeding related factors. On the other hand, LY 225910, the CCK2R selective antagonist, partially reversed these effects. These results indicate CCK is a satiety factor inhibits the feeding of Siberian sturgeon primarily through CCK1R.

Abstract
The regulation of food intake in fish is a complex process carried out through several different mechanisms in the central nervous system (CNS) with hypothalamus being the main regulatory center. As in mammals, a complex hypothalamic circuit including two populations of neurons: one co-expressing neuropeptide Y (NPY) and Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) and the second one population co-expressing pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) is involved in the integration of information relating to food intake control. The production and release of these peptides control food intake, and the production results from the integration of information of different nature such as levels of nutrients and hormones as well as circadian signals. The present review summarizes the knowledge and recent findings about the presence and functioning of these mechanisms in fish and their differences vs. the known mammalian model.

Abstract
Gut hormones act as appetite regulatory hormones in mammals. For example, the hunger hormone ghrelin, which is released from the stomach before food intake, stimulates appetite. In contrast, satiety hormones such as cholecystokinin, glucagon-like peptide-1, and peptide YY, which are released from the intestines after food intake, suppress appetite. The effects of these peptides on food intake have been shown to be similar in both mammals and fishes. However, evidence suggests that the physiological roles of these gut hormones may be different between birds and other vertebrates. This review summarizes the current information on the roles of gut hormones in the regulation of food intake in birds, especially in chickens.

Abstract
Evidence obtained in recent years in a few species, especially rainbow trout, supports the presence in fish of nutrient sensing mechanisms. Glucosensing capacity is present in central (hypothalamus and hindbrain) and peripheral [liver, Brockmann bodies (BB, main accumulation of pancreatic endocrine cells in several fish species), and intestine] locations whereas fatty acid sensors seem to be present in hypothalamus, liver and BB. Glucose and fatty acid sensing capacities relate to food intake regulation and metabolism in fish. Hypothalamus is as a signaling integratory center in a way that detection of increased levels of nutrients result in food intake inhibition through changes in the expression of anorexigenic and orexigenic neuropeptides. Moreover, central nutrient sensing modulates functions in the periphery since they elicit changes in hepatic metabolism as well as in hormone secretion to counter-regulate changes in nutrient levels detected in the CNS. At peripheral level, the direct nutrient detection in liver has a crucial role in homeostatic control of glucose and fatty acid whereas in BB and intestine nutrient sensing is probably involved in regulation of hormone secretion from endocrine cells.

Abstract
Fish are the most diversified group of vertebrates and, although progress has been made in the past years, only relatively few fish species have been examined to date, with regards to the endocrine regulation of feeding in fish. In fish, as in mammals, feeding behavior is ultimately regulated by central effectors within feeding centers of the brain, which receive and process information from endocrine signals from both brain and peripheral tissues. Although basic endocrine mechanisms regulating feeding appear to be conserved among vertebrates, major physiological differences between fish and mammals and the diversity of fish, in particular in regard to feeding habits, digestive tract anatomy and physiology, suggest the existence of fish- and species-specific regulating mechanisms. This review provides an overview of hormones known to regulate food intake in fish, emphasizing on major hormones and the main fish groups studied to date.

Abstract
Survival, competition, growth and reproductive success in fishes are highly dependent on food intake, food availability and feeding behavior and are all influenced by a complex set of metabolic and neuroendocrine mechanisms. Overexpression of growth hormone (GH) in transgenic fish can result in greatly enhanced growth rates, feed conversion, feeding motivation and food intake. The objectives of this study were to compare seasonal feeding behavior of non-transgenic wild-type (NT) and GH-transgenic (T) coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), and to examine the effects of intraperitoneal injections of the appetite-regulating peptides cholecystokinin (CCK-8), bombesin (BBS), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) on feeding behavior. T salmon fed consistently across all seasons, whereas NT dramatically reduced their food intake in winter, indicating the seasonal regulation of appetite can be altered by overexpression of GH in T fish. Intraperitoneal injections of CCK-8 and BBS caused a significant and rapid decrease in food intake for both genotypes. Treatment with either GLP-1 or α-MSH resulted in a significant suppression of food intake for NT but had no effect in T coho salmon. The differential response of T and NT fish to α-MSH is consistent with the melanocortin-4 receptor system being a significant pathway by which GH acts to stimulate appetite. Taken together, these results suggest that chronically increased levels of GH alter feeding regulatory pathways to different extents for individual peptides, and that altered feeding behavior in transgenic coho salmon may arise, in part, from changes in sensitivity to peripheral appetite-regulating signals.

Abstract
Food intake in fish is a complex process regulated through many different factors including abundance of energy and nutrients. In recent years, evidence have been obtained in several fishes, mainly in rainbow trout, regarding the presence and functioning in brain areas of metabolic sensors informing about changes in the levels of nutrients like glucose and fatty acids. The activity of these sensors relate to the control of food intake through changes in the expression of anorexigenic and orexigenic neuropeptides. The present review will provide a picture of the main results obtained to date in these studies, as well as perspectives for future research in the field.

Abstract
In the present study, full-length cDNA sequences of leptin and cholecystokinin (CCK) were cloned from Schizothorax prenanti (S. prenanti), and applied real-time quantitative PCR to characterize the tissue distribution, and appetite regulatory effects of leptin and CCK in S. prenanti. The S. prenanti leptin and CCK full-length cDNA sequences were 1121 bp and 776 bp in length, encoding the peptide of 171 and 123 amino acid residues, respectively. Tissue distribution analysis showed that leptin mRNA was mainly expressed in the liver of S. prenanti. CCK was widely expressed, with the highest levels of expression in the hypothalamus, myelencephalon, telencephalon and foregut of S. prenanti. The CCK mRNA expression was highly elevated after feeding, whereas the leptin mRNA expression was not affected by single meal. These results suggested that CCK is a postprandial satiety signal in S. prenanti, but leptin might not be. In present study, leptin and CCK gene expression were both decreased after fasting and increased after refeeding, which suggested leptin and CCK might be involved in regulation of appetite in S. prenanti. This study provides an essential groundwork to further elucidate the appetite regulatory systems of leptin and CCK in S. prenanti as well as in other teleosts.

Abstract
Energy balance plays an important role in the control of reproduction. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms connecting the two systems are not well understood especially in teleosts. The hypothalamus plays a crucial role in the regulation of both energy balance and reproduction, and contains a number of neuropeptides, including gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), orexin, neuropeptide-Y, ghrelin, pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide, α-melanocyte stimulating hormone, melanin-concentrating hormone, cholecystokinin, 26RFamide, nesfatin, kisspeptin, and gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone. These neuropeptides are involved in the control of energy balance and reproduction either directly or indirectly. On the other hand, synthesis and release of these hypothalamic neuropeptides are regulated by metabolic signals from the gut and the adipose tissue. Furthermore, neurons producing these neuropeptides interact with each other, providing neuronal basis of the link between energy balance and reproduction. This review summarizes the advances made in our understanding of the physiological roles of the hypothalamic neuropeptides in energy balance and reproduction in teleosts, and discusses how they interact with GnRH, kisspeptin, and pituitary gonadotropins to control reproduction in teleosts.

Abstract
Feeding behavior and reproduction are coordinately regulated by the brain via neurotransmitters, circulating hormones, and neuropeptides. Reduced feeding allows animals to engage in other behaviors important for fitness, including mating and parental care. Some fishes cease feeding for weeks at a time in order to provide care to their young by brooding them inside the male or female parent's mouth. Maternal mouthbrooding is known to impact circulating hormones and subsequent reproductive cycles, but neither the full effects of food deprivation nor the neural mechanisms are known. Here we ask what effects mouthbrooding has on several physiological processes including gonad and body mass, brain neuropeptide and receptor gene expression, and circulating steroid hormones in a mouthbrooding cichlid species, Astatotilapia burtoni. We ask whether any observed changes can be explained by food deprivation, and show that during mouthbrooding, ovary size and circulating levels of androgens and estrogens match those seen during food deprivation. Levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GnRH1) mRNA in the brain were low in food-deprived females compared to controls and in mouthbrooding females compared to gravid females. Levels of mRNA encoding two peptides involved in regulating feeding, hypocretin and cholecystokinin, were increased in the brains of food-deprived females. Brain mRNA levels of two receptors, GnRH receptor 2 and NPY receptor Y8c, were elevated in mouthbrooding females compared to the fed condition, but NPY receptor Y8b mRNA was differently regulated by mouthbrooding. These results suggest that many, but not all, of the characteristic physiological changes that occur during mouthbrooding are consequences of food deprivation.

Abstract
Teleost fishes represent a highly diverse group consisting of more than 20,000 species living across all aquatic environments. This group has significant economical, societal and environmental impacts, yet research efforts have concentrated primarily on salmonid and cyprinid species. This review examines carbohydrate/glucose metabolism and its regulation in these model species including the role of hormones and diet. Over the past decade, molecular tools have been used to address some of the downstream components of these processes and these are incorporated to better understand the roles played by carbohydrates and their regulatory paths. Glucose metabolism remains a contentious area as many fish species are traditionally considered glucose intolerant and, therefore, one might expect that the use and storage of glucose would be considered of minor importance. However, the actual picture is not so clear since the apparent intolerance of fish to carbohydrates is not evident in herbivorous and omnivorous species and even in carnivorous species, glucose is important for specific tissues and/or for specific activities. Thus, our aim is to up-date carbohydrate metabolism in fish, placing it to the context of these new experimental tools and its relationship to dietary intake. Finally, we suggest that new research directions ultimately will lead to a better understanding of these processes.

Abstract
Teleost fish are able to adjust their energy intake when fed on pure macronutrient sources, although the exact mechanisms regulating macronutrient selection remain unknown. Since cholecystokinin (CCK) has been reported to modify macronutrient selection patterns in mammals, we explored the effect of CCK administered orally to European sea bass on the selection of separately encapsulated macronutrients. CCK doses of 0.05, 0.15 and 0.25 mg/kg BW administered in gelatine capsules for 5 consecutive days produced a significant inhibition of total food intake (21, 28 and 51%, respectively) at highest doses, evenly reducing the quantity of all the macronutrients ingested and, without affecting their relative proportions in the diet. Oral administration of proglumide, a non-specific CCK receptor antagonist, at doses of 5, 15 and 25 mg/kg BW, induced a quantitative total food intake increase of 2, 18 and 44%, respectively, and an increase of 52% in CH and 43% in P quantity ingested at highest dose. Co-administration of proglumide (25 mg/kg BW) and CCK (0.25 mg/kg BW) in a single preload capsule blocked the effects observed with CCK alone. In conclusion, orally administered CCK induced an anorexigenic effect on both total food and single macronutrient intake, an effect that is counteracted by the CCK antagonist proglumide.

Abstract
Somatostatin is a neuropeptide best known for its inhibitory effects on growth hormone secretion and has recently been implicated in the control of social behavior. Several somatostatin receptor subtypes have been identified in vertebrates, but the functional basis for this diversity is still unclear. Here we investigate the expression levels of the somatostatin prepropeptide and two of its receptors, sstR2, and sstR3, in the brains of socially dominant and subordinate Astatotilapia burtoni males using real-time PCR. Dominant males had higher somatostatin prepropeptide and sstR3 expression in hypothalamus compared to subordinate males. Hypothalamic sstR2 expression did not differ. There were no differences in gene expression in the telencephalon. We also observed an interesting difference between dominants and subordinates in the relationship between hypothalamic sstR2 expression and body size. As would be predicted based on the inhibitory effects of somatostatin on somatic growth, sstR2 expression was negatively correlated with body size in dominant males. In contrast sstR2 expression was positively correlated with body size in subordinate males. These results suggest that in A. burtoni social status affects the relationships between somatostatin prepropeptide and receptor gene expression in the hypothalamus and the control of somatic growth.

Abstract
In goldfish, growth hormone (GH) transiently rises 30 min after meals, returning to baseline at 1 h postmeal. Somatostatin (SRIF) is the major inhibitor of GH release. Three cDNAs encoding pre-pro-SRIF (PSS) have been previously cloned from goldfish brain: PSS-I, which encodes SRIF-14; PSS-II, which is potentially processed into gSRIF-28 that has [Glu1,Tyr7,Gly10]SRIF-14 at the COOH terminus; and PSS-III, which encodes [Pro2]SRIF-14 at its COOH terminus. In goldfish, bombesin (BBS), mimicking the endogenous gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), acutely suppresses food intake and also stimulates GH release. Ghrelin was recently characterized in goldfish as a GH secretagogue and an orexigen. In this paper, we studied the changes in SRIF mRNA levels during feeding and analyzed the influences of BBS and ghrelin peptides on forebrain PSS expression. The results showed a 60% reduction in PSS-II mRNA after meals, but no changes in the expression of PSS-I and PSS-III were found. Intraperitoneal injections of 100 ng/g body wt of BBS increased GH secretion and decreased PSS-I and PSS-II gene expression. Intraperitoneal injection of goldfish ghrelin (100 ng/g body wt) transiently increased the serum GH levels and increased PSS-I, while decreasing PSS-II mRNA levels. Ghrelin (50 ng/g body wt) blocked the effects of BBS (100 ng/g body wt) on PSS-I but not on PSS-II expression. Coadministration of BBS and ghrelin decreased only the PSS-II gene expression. We conclude that the interactions between BBS/GRP and ghrelin can account for the postprandial variations in serum GH levels and the forebrain expression of PSS-II. Furthermore, we demonstrate that intraperitoneal administration of BBS reduces the ghrelin expression levels in the gut. Thus the inhibition of production of ghrelin in the gut may contribute to the satiety effects of BBS/GRP peptides.

Abstract
Food intake and body weight are determined by a complex interaction of regulatory pathways. To elucidate the contribution of the endogenous peptide cholecystokinin, mice lacking functional cholecystokinin-A receptors were generated by targeted gene disruption. To explore the role of the cholecystokinin-A receptor in mediating satiety, food intake of cholecystokinin-A receptor-/- mice was compared with the corresponding intakes of wild-type animals and mice lacking the other known cholecystokinin receptor subtype, cholecystokinin-B/gastrin. Intraperitoneal administration of cholecystokinin failed to decrease food intake in mice lacking cholecystokinin-A receptors. In contrast, cholecystokinin diminished food intake by up to 90% in wild-type and cholecystokinin-B/gastrin receptor-/- mice. Together, these findings indicate that cholecystokinin-induced inhibition of food intake is mediated by the cholecystokinin-A receptor. To explore the long-term consequences of either cholecystokinin-A or cholecystokinin-B/gastrin receptor absence, body weight as a function of age was compared between freely fed wild-type and mutant animals. Both cholecystokinin-A and cholecystokinin-B/gastrin receptor-/- mice maintained normal body weight well into adult life. In addition, each of the two receptor-/- strains had normal pancreatic morphology and were normoglycemic. Our results suggest that although cholecystokinin plays a role in the short-term inhibition of food intake, this pathway is not essential for the long-term maintenance of body weight.
