In situ fabrication of a plasmonic Bi@Bi2O2CO3 core-shell heterostructure for photocatalytic CO2 reduction: structural insights into selectivity modulation

The precise design of active sites and light absorbers is essential for developing highly efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Core-shell heterostructures constructed based on large-sized plasmonic Bi metals are ideal candidates because of the utilization of full-spectrum light and effective charge separation. However, the mechanism of selectivity modulation of large-sized Bi@semiconductor photocatalysts has yet to be explored in depth. Herein, a plasmonic Bi@Bi2O2CO3 core-shell heterostructure was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal treatment in deep eutectic solvents, demonstrating highly efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This structure features a sizeable Bi sphere with a thin, epitaxially grown Bi2O2CO3 shell, which allows for the utilization of the entire light spectrum. Additionally, the oxygen vacancies in the Bi2O2CO3 shell can rapidly trap electrons transferred from the Bi core via Bi-O-Bi bonds, thereby forming abundant electron-rich interfaces that serve as the active sites for activating reactant molecules and facilitating the reaction.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction via Bismuth Nanoparticle-Decorating ZnCdS Solid Solution

The construction of photocatalysts with a surface plasmon resonance effect (SPR) has been demonstrated as a highly effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. In this paper, we synthesized a catalyst with bismuth metal loaded on ZnCdS nanospheres for an efficient photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (PNRR). The SPR effect induced by Bi nanoparticles under light excitation significantly promoted the ammonia production efficiency of the photocatalyst. Under air ambient conditions with lactic acid as the sacrificial agent, the photocatalytic NH4+ yield of 3% Bi@ZnCdS was 58.93 μmol·g-1·h-1, which exhibited an approximately 7.7 times that of the pure phase ZnCdS. The experimental characterization results demonstrate that the incorporation of metallic bismuth enhances the light absorption capacity of the catalyst and improves the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers. Theoretical calculations proved that Bi NPs provide more photogenerated electrons to convert N2 to NH3 for solid-solution ZnCdS. This work presents a novel concept for the development of advanced plasma nanomaterials to enhance the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation reaction.

Recent Development Strategies for Bismuth-Driven Materials in Sustainable Energy Systems and Environmental Restoration

Bismuth(Bi)-based materials have gained considerable attention in recent decades for use in a diverse range of sustainable energy and environmental applications due to their low toxicity and eco-friendliness. Bi materials are widely employed in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, exhibiting excellent catalytic and non-catalytic performance, as well as CO₂ /N₂ reduction and water treatment systems. A variety of Bi materials, including its oxides, chalcogenides, oxyhalides, bismuthates, and other composites, have been developed for understanding their physicochemical properties. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the properties of individual Bi material systems and their use in a range of applications is provided. This review highlights the implementation of novel strategies to modify Bi materials based on morphological and facet control, doping/defect inclusion, and composite/heterojunction formation. The factors affecting the development of different classes of Bi materials and how their control differs between individual Bi compounds are also described. In particular, the development process for these material systems, their mass production, and related challenges are considered. Thus, the key components in Bi compounds are compared in terms of their properties, design, and applications. Finally, the future potential and challenges associated with Bi complexes are presented as a pathway for new innovations.

A review on bismuth-based nanocomposites for energy and environmental applications

Bismuth, a heavy metal which is found to be inexpensive and at a reduced cost, is utilized in the synthesis of different nanomaterials with novel structure, remarkable physical and chemical properties, adjustable bandgap, notable efficiency for photothermal conversion. These characteristics have made this element desirable for various applications such as storage and conversion of energy, electronics, sensors, photocatalysis, and other biomedical applications. These review papers are the vital points for the students, this report guides them to the research papers which focus on the impressive development in the area of bismuth and similar nanostructures. The purpose of the present review is to discuss the various synthesis routes of bismuth-based nanomaterials along with green synthesis, different nanostructures of bismuth, their significant properties, diverse applications and directions for the upcoming research. Therefore, with these different tuneable synthesis methods of bismuth-based nanomaterials combined with their novel properties, would elucidate on the future devices based on various nanostructures of bismuth.

Non-Noble Plasmonic Metal-Based Photocatalysts

Solar-to-chemical energy conversion via heterogeneous photocatalysis is one of the sustainable approaches to tackle the growing environmental and energy challenges. Among various promising photocatalytic materials, plasmonic-driven photocatalysts feature prominent solar-driven surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Non-noble plasmonic metals (NNPMs)-based photocatalysts have been identified as a unique alternative to noble metal-based ones due to their advantages like earth-abundance, cost-effectiveness, and large-scale application capability. This review comprehensively summarizes the most recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and properties of NNPMs-based photocatalysts. After introducing the fundamental principles of SPR, the attributes and functionalities of NNPMs in governing surface/interfacial photocatalytic processes are presented. Next, the utilization of NNPMs-based photocatalytic materials for the removal of pollutants, water splitting, CO₂ reduction, and organic transformations is discussed. The review concludes with current challenges and perspectives in advancing the NNPMs-based photocatalysts, which are timely and important to plasmon-based photocatalysis, a truly interdisciplinary field across materials science, chemistry, and physics.

Plasmonic Bismuth Nanoparticles: Thiolate Pyrolysis Synthesis, Size-Dependent LSPR Property, and Their Oxidation Behavior

Plasmonics, especially the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in non-noble metal bismuth nanoparticles (Bi NPs), and its spectral features and applications have stimulated increasing research interest in recent years. However, the lack of mature methods to prepare Bi NPs with a well-controlled size and/or shape significantly limits the experimental investigations concerning the LSPR optical properties. Herein, we realize the size-tunable synthesis of nearly monodisperse spherical Bi NPs through a thiolate pyrolysis reaction in solution. The instantaneous thermolysis of a layered molecular intermediate, bismuth dodecanethiolate [Bi(SC₁₂H₂₅)₃], results in a classical LaMer mechanism for the nucleation and growth of Bi NPs, allowing for a precise size control from 65 to 205 nm in the average diameter. The diameter tunability enables a systematic study on the size dependence of LSPR optical properties of Bi NPs, and we observe rich ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared spectral responses arising from the LSPR absorption and scattering of Bi NPs as their size varies, which will greatly benefit the light harvesting and manipulation in the solar spectrum. Furthermore, we find that a complete oxidation occurs to Bi NPs under air flow at the temperature when they melt and accordingly generate metastable tetragonal-phase β-Bi₂O₃ NPs that show an optical band gap of 2.15 eV and interesting temperature-dependent β → α → δ → (γ + β) polymorphic transitions.

Shielding characteristics of nanocomposites for protection against X- and gamma rays in medical applications: effect of particle size, photon energy and nano-particle concentration

In recent decades, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated for many applications. Composites doped with different metal nanoparticles have been suggested as effective shielding materials to replace conventional lead-based materials. The use of concretes as structural and radiation protective material has been influenced by the addition of nanomaterials. Several elements with high atomic number and density, such as lead, bismuth, and tungsten, have the potential to form nanoparticles that offer significant enhancements in the shielding ability of composites. Their performance for a range of particle concentrations, particle sizes, and photon energies have been investigated. This review is an attempt to gather the data published in the literature about the application of nanomaterials in radiation shielding, including the use of polymer composites and concretes for protection against X-rays and gamma radiation.
