Abstract
Studies have shown that postmenopausal women have more metabolic abnormalities than premenopausal women. No consensus exists on how serum uric acid (sUA) affects metabolism-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in postmenopausal women.This prospective observational study examined this link using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017 to 2020 data. We divided women's sUA levels into four quartiles and used logistic regression, subgroup analyses, and restricted triple spline methods to compare the prevalence of MAFLD in postmenopausal and non-menopausal women. We also used histograms to analyze the effect of BMI-based indices. This population-based study involved 4477 women, including 1139 postmenopausal women aged 55-73 years. Multivariate logistic regression showed that, in the fully adjusted model, we found that participants in the highest quartile of sUA had a statistically significant 254% increased risk of MAFLD compared with participants in the lowest quartile (OR: 3.54; 95% CI 3.54 1.47-8.55; P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses showed no significant interaction between sUA levels and specific subgroups P( > 0.05 for all interactions). Additionally, RCS and threshold analysis showed a linear correlation (P = 0.186) and an ideal inflection point of 4.6 (P = 0.818) to the left. Right of the inflection point, the effect size was 1.524 (95% CI 1.291-1.814; P < 0.01). Histograms demonstrated that postmenopausal BMI increased sUA's influence on MAFLD and higher sUA levels and BMI may enhance the prevalence of MAFLA in US postmenopausal women. The results of this study suggest that monitoring sUA levels in the postmenopausal period is critical in determining the occurrence of and interventions for MAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most prevalent chronic liver disease among adults. High uric acid (UA) increases the incidence of NAFLD in the general population. However, further exploration is warranted to determine the relationship between UA levels and NAFLD in various populations. We conducted a historical cohort study to investigate the causality between UA and NAFLD across different weight categories. METHODS A historical cohort was established from the Jidong community cohort. All participants were enrolled and followed up from July 1st, 2013 to August 1st, 2018. The study participants were retrospectively assigned to four groups according to their UA levels (Q1, 69-210 μmol/L; Q2, 211-255 μmol/L; Q3, 256-310 μmol/L; Q4, 311-593 μmol/L). The NAFLD incidence was investigated in each group. We used the UA level determined by an automatic analyzer. NAFLD was diagnosed with abdominal ultrasonography examination. Demographic information, lifestyle history, clinical anthropometric data, and blood samples of participants were collected. Univariate analysis and multivariable Cox regression were applied to analyze the relationship between UA and NAFLD by stratification of participants' body mass index (BMI) categories (underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese). RESULTS Two thousand nine hundred eighty four participants were enrolled. 740 (24.8%) were assigned to UA Q1 group, 755 (25.3%) to UA Q2, 743 (24.9%) to UA Q3, and 746 (25.0%) to UA Q4. The global incidence of NAFLD was 26.0% (777/2984). The risk of NAFLD significantly increased with elevated UA levels in underweight and normal-weight participants (HR = 3.498, 95% CI: 2.413-5.072, P < 0.05). In multivariable analysis, UA showed a positive association with NAFLD, independent of other risk factors in underweight and normal-weight participants (UA Q2: 1.152 (0.761-1.743), UA Q3: 2.168 (1.489-3.157), UA Q4: 3.075 (2.103-4.196), P < 0.05). In the absence of other risk factors, high UA levels independently explained 17% of NAFLD risk in underweight and normal-weight participants. CONCLUSIONS High UA levels serve as an independent risk factor for NAFLD in underweight and normal-weight individuals, highlighting the necessity of early NAFLD screening through monitoring liver function and UA levels, and personalized treatment plans for NAFLD patients with higher UA levels, which may include uric acid-lowering therapy and lifestyle modifications. However, the relationship between UA levels and NAFLD in overweight and obese individuals remains inconclusive.

Abstract
Background and aim Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has gradually become one of the main health concerns regarding liver diseases. Postmenopausal women represent a high-risk group for MAFLD; therefore, it is of great importance to identify and intervene with patients at risk at an early stage. This study established a predictive nomogram model of MAFLD in postmenopausal women and to enhance the clinical utility of the new model, the researchers limited variables to simple clinical and laboratory indicators that are readily obtainable. Methods Data of 942 postmenopausal women from January 2023 to October 2023 were retrospectively collected and divided into two groups according to the collection time: the training group (676 cases) and the validation group (226 cases). Significant indicators independently related to MAFLD were identified through univariate logistic regression and stepwise regression, and the MAFLD prediction nomogram was established. The C-index and calibration curve were used to quantify the nomogram performance, and the model was evaluated by measuring the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results Of 37 variables, 11 predictors were identified, including occupation (worker), body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, number of abortions, anxiety, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, hyperuricemia, and diet (meat and processed meat). The C-index of the training group predicting the related risk factors was 0.827 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.794-0.860). The C-index of the validation group was 0.787 (95% CI 0.728-0.846). Calibration curves 1 and 2 (BS1000 times) were close to the diagonal, showing a good agreement between the predicted probability and the actual incidence in the two groups. The AUC of the training group was 0.827, the sensitivity was 0.784, and the specificity was 0.735. The AUC of the validation group was 0.787, the sensitivity was 0.674, and the specificity was 0.772. The DCA curve showed that the nomogram had a good net benefit in predicting MAFLD in postmenopausal women. Conclusions A predictive nomogram for MAFLD in postmenopausal women was established and verified, which can assist clinicians in evaluating the risk of MAFLD at an early stage.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common and presents in a large proportion-up to 30%-of the global adult female population. Several factors have been linked with NAFLD in women, such as age, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. To extract appropriate details about the topic, we conducted an extensive search using various medical subject headings and entry terms including 'Menopause', 'Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease', 'Insulin resistance', and 'BMI'. This exhaustive search resulted in a total of 180 studies, among which only 19 were able to meet the inclusion criteria. While most of these studies indicated a significant rise in NAFLD prevalence among postmenopausal women, two did not find strong evidence linking menopause with NAFLD. Moreover, it was observed that women with NAFLD had higher insulin resistance levels and BMIs compared to those without the condition. In summary, it is important to consider specific factors like risk profile, hormonal status, and age along with metabolic components when treating women presenting with NAFLD. There is need for data-driven research on how gender affects the sensitivity of biomarkers towards NAFLD as well as the development of sex-specific prediction models-this would help personalize management approaches for women, who stand to benefit greatly from such tailored interventions.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent condition among postmenopausal women that can lead to severe liver dysfunction and increased mortality. In recent years, research has focused on identifying potential lifestyle dietary interventions that may prevent or treat NAFLD in this population. Due to the complex and multifactorial nature of NAFLD in postmenopausal women, the disease can present as different subtypes, with varying levels of clinical presentation and variable treatment responses. By recognizing the significant heterogeneity of NAFLD in postmenopausal women, it may be possible to identify specific subsets of individuals who may benefit from targeted nutritional interventions. The purpose of this review was to examine the current evidence supporting the role of three specific nutritional factors-choline, soy isoflavones, and probiotics-as potential nutritional adjuvants in the prevention and treatment of NAFLD in postmenopausal women. There is promising evidence supporting the potential benefits of these nutritional factors for NAFLD prevention and treatment, particularly in postmenopausal women, and further research is warranted to confirm their effectiveness in alleviating hepatic steatosis in this population.

Abstract
Objective Recent epidemiological evidence shows that there is an association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The purpose of this meta-analysis is to summarize all available evidence and assess the associations between SUA levels and NAFLD. Methods Using two databases, Web of Science and PubMed, observational studies were applied from the establishment of the databases to June 2022. We used a random effect model to construct the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to appraise the association between SUA levels and NAFLD. The Begg's test was conducted to appraise publication bias. Results A total of 50 studies were included, involving 2,079,710 participants (719,013 NAFLD patients). The prevalence and incidence rates (95% CIs) of NAFLD in the patients with hyperuricemia were 65% (57-73%) and 31% (20-41%), respectively. Compared to participants with lower levels of SUA, the pooled OR (95% CI) of NAFLD in those with higher levels of SUA was 1.88 (95% CI: 1.76-2.00). In the subgroup analyses, we found that SUA levels were positively associated with NAFLD in all subgroups, according to study design, study quality, sample size, sex, comparison, age, or country. Conclusion This meta-analysis shows that increased SUA levels are positively associated with NAFLD. The results suggested that reducing SUA levels can be a potential strategy for the prevention of NAFLD. Registration Number PROSPERO-CRD42022358431.

Abstract
Compared with males, premenopausal women and female rodents are protected against hepatic steatosis and present with higher functioning mitochondria (greater hepatic mitochondrial respiration and reduced H2O2 emission). Despite evidence that estrogen action mediates female protection against steatosis, mechanisms remain unknown. Here we validated a mouse model with inducible reduction of liver estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) (LERKO) via adeno-associated virus (AAV) Cre. We phenotyped the liver health and mitochondrial function of LERKO mice (n = 10-12 per group) on a short-term high-fat diet (HFD), and then tested whether timing of LERKO induction at 2 timepoints (sexually immature: 4 weeks old [n = 11 per group] vs sexually mature: 8-10 weeks old [n = 8 per group]) would impact HFD-induced outcomes. We opted for an inducible LERKO model due to known estrogen-mediated developmental programming, and we reported both receptor and tissue specificity with our model. Control mice were ERαfl/fl receiving AAV with green fluorescent protein (GFP) only. Results show that there were no differences in body weight/composition or hepatic steatosis in LERKO mice with either short-term (4-week) or chronic (8-week) high-fat feeding. Similarly, LERKO genotype nor timing of LERKO induction (pre vs post sexual maturity) did not alter hepatic mitochondrial O2 and H2O2 flux, coupling, or OXPHOS protein. Transcriptomic analysis showed that hepatic gene expression in LERKO was significantly influenced by developmental stage. Together, these studies suggest that hepatic ERα is not required in female protection against HFD-induced hepatic steatosis nor does it mediate sexual dimorphism in liver mitochondria function.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Data are inconsistent on whether menopause is a risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). OBJECTIVE Using systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to collect all available data to determine the association between menopause and NAFLD. EVIDENCE REVIEW Potentially eligible studies were identified from EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases from inception to December 2021 using a search strategy that was composed of the terms for "NAFLD" and "menopause." Eligible study must contain two groups of participants: one group of postmenopausal women and another group of premenopausal women. Then, the study must report the association between menopause and prevalent NAFLD. We extracted such data from each study and calculated pooled odds ratio (OR) by combining effect estimates of each study using a random-effects model. Funnel plot was used to assess for the presence of publication bias. FINDINGS A total of 587 articles were identified. After two rounds of independent review by two investigators, 12 cross-sectional studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria. The meta-analysis of 12 studies revealed the significant association between menopause and NAFLD with a pooled OR of 2.37 (95% CI, 1.99-2.82; I2 = 73%). The association remained significant in a sensitivity meta-analysis of six studies that reported the association with adjustment for age and metabolic factors with a pooled OR of 2.19 (95% CI, 1.73-2.78; I2 = 74%). The funnel plot was fairly symmetric and was not suggestive of publication bias. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The meta-analysis reveals that menopausal status was associated with approximately 2.4 times higher odds of NAFLD.

Abstract
The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) differs between various stages of the female lifespan. The aim of this review is to summarize current evidence on the association of NAFLD and circulating sex hormones and to explore the pathogenesis of NAFLD within the context of (1) sex hormone changes during the reproductive, post-reproductive female life and beyond and (2) the in vitro and in vivo evidence on pharmacological modulation in women on menopausal hormone treatment (MHT) or endocrine therapy after breast cancer. The fluctuation in estrogen concentrations, the relative androgen excess, and the age-related reduction in sex hormone-binding globulin are related to increased NAFLD risk. Moreover, the peri-menopausal changes in body composition and insulin resistance might contribute to the increased NAFLD risk. Whether MHT prevents or improves NAFLD in this population remains an open question. Studies in women with breast cancer treated with tamoxifen or non-steroidal aromatase inhibitors point to their adverse effects on NAFLD development, although a more pronounced effect of tamoxifen is reported. Future studies focusing on the underlying pathogenesis should identify subgroups with the highest risk of NAFLD development and progression into more aggressive forms, as well as elucidate the role of hormone therapies, such as MHT.

Abstract
Background The association between the serum uric acid (sUA) to creatinine ratio (sUA/Cr) and non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been sufficiently clarified. In this study, we investigated the relationship between sUA/Cr and NAFLD among participants in the United States. Methods We performed a cross‐sectional study based on data from the National Health and Nutrition examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2018. A measured controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) value of ≥274 dB/m detected by Fibroscan was used to identify hepatic steatosis. SUA/Cr was calculated as sUA divided by serum creatinine. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between sUA/Cr and NAFLD. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of sUA/Cr for NAFLD was estimated, and subgroup analysis stratified by sex was also conducted. The nonlinear relationship between sUA/Cr and NAFLD was further described using smooth curve fittings and threshold‐effect analysis. Results We found that sUA/Cr was positively correlated with NAFLD status after fully adjustment for confounding factors. In subgroup analysis stratified by sex, the positive interaction between sUA/Cr and NAFLD status only existed in women but not in men. Moreover, the nonlinear association between sUA/Cr and NAFLD status was an inverted U‐shaped curve with an inflection point at 9.7 among men. Conclusions Our study identified that sUA/Cr was positively associated with the risk of NAFLD among individuals in the United States. Moreover, the correlation between sUA/Cr and NAFLD differed according to sex.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Several studies have demonstrated the association between gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and hyperuricaemia, but little is known about such relation in less-developed ethnic minority regions. DESIGN We cross-sectionally analysed data from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (Yunnan region). SETTING Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS 22 020 participants aged 30-79 years from Han ethnicity, Yi ethnicity and Bai ethnicity. OUTCOMES The serum level of uric acid, GGT and other metabolic parameters were tested. Weight, height and blood pressure were measured. Smoking, drinking, ethnicity, education and medical history were obtained from questionnaires. RESULTS In the crude model, compared with the lowest quintile, the second, third, fourth and fifth quintiles of serum GGT exhibited a positive association with hyperuricaemia risk (OR=1.69, 2.90, 4.34 and 7.70, 95% CI=1.42 to 2.01, 2.47 to 3.42, 3.71 to 5.09 and 6.60 to 8.98, respectively, p-trend<0.0001). In fully adjusted model, compared with the lowest quintile, the second, third, fourth and fifth quintiles of serum GGT also exhibited a positive association with hyperuricaemia risk (OR=1.26, 1.68, 2.02 and 3.02, 95% CI=1.04 to 1.51, 1.40 to 2.00, 1.69 to 2.42 and 2.51 to 3.64, respectively, p-trend<0.0001). Logistic regression model was conducted separately in ethnic groups. Compared with first quintile, the highest GGT level were related to higher risk of hyperuricaemia in three ethnic groups (OR (95% CI): 2.89 (2.26 to 3.68), 2.81 (1.93 to 4.11) and 3.04 (1.91 to 4.84) for Han, Yi and Bai ethnicity, respectively, p-trend <0.0001). The relationship between GGT and hyperuricaemia was also observed in different age groups or gender groups. CONCLUSIONS High serum GGT level was related to a higher risk of hyperuricaemia in less-developed ethnic minority regions in China.

Abstract
BackgroundTo determine the association of the retinal capillary plexus (RCP) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) with cognitive impairment using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).MethodsA cross-sectional, community-based study utilizing data from the participants enrolled between August 2019 and January 2020 in the Jidong Eye Cohort Study. We assessed the vessel density in RCP and GCC thickness using OCTA, and cognitive testing using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Cognitive impairment in this study was defined as MoCA score < 24. We used multivariable analysis to evaluate the association of RCP and GCC with cognitive impairment after adjusting for confounders.ResultsThis study analyzed 1555 participants. The mean age of participants was 52.3 (8.4) years, and 861 (55.4%) were women. Cognitive impairment was observed in 268 (17.2%) participants. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for parafovea vessel density in the deep RCP with cognitive impairment was 1.20 (1.03–1.39). For vessel area and length density surrounding foveal avascular zone with cognitive impairment, the ORs with 95% CIs were 1.23 (1.07–1.41) and 1.30 (1.13–1.49), respectively. For thickness in the superior GCC with cognitive impairment, the OR with 95% CI was 1.16 (1.01–1.32).ConclusionLower vessel density in the RCP and thinner GCC were associated with cognitive impairment. Our results suggest that alterations in the RCP and GCC could provide further evidence when assessing the cognitive function and may even be potentially useful biomarkers in the detection of cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Many breast cancer patients have both non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty pancreas disease (NAFPD). Consequently, we hypothesized that NAFPD and NAFLD were associated with breast cancer, and aimed to build a novel risk-stratification scoring system based on it. In this study, a total of 961 patients with breast cancer and 1,006 non-cancer patients were recruited. The clinical characteristics were collected and analyzed using logistic analysis. Risk factors were assessed by a risk rating system. Univariate analysis showed that body mass index, triglyceride, total cholesterol, NAFLD, NAFPD, low-density lipoprotein, and uric acid (UA) were significantly related to breast cancer. Among them, NAFLD, NAFPD, and UA were independent risk factors related to breast cancer identified by multivariate analysis. The risk assessment model was established based on these factors and demonstrated that the odds ratio sharply increased with the rising scores. Compared with the low-risk group, the odds ratio in the intermediate- and high-risk groups were 1.662 (1.380–2.001) and 3.185 (2.145–4.728), respectively. In conclusion, the risk-stratification scoring system combining NAFLD, NAFPD, and UA can accurately predict the occurrence of breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Serum uric acid (UA) is related to many metabolic diseases. However, the association of UA with liver diseases was not very clear. The objective of this study is to clarify the relationship of UA with liver steatosis and fibrosis. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of 4364 people of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were assessed by controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurements (LSM) using Vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). Linear and logistic regressions were performed. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, UA levels were associated with the prevalence of liver steatosis [OR=2.097 (95%CI: 1.245, 3.534)] and liver fibrosis [OR=2.983 (95%CI: 1.797, 4.952)]. Furthermore, the results were consistent in the subgroup analyses of males and females. CONCLUSIONS UA levels were positively associated with the prevalence of liver steatosis and fibrosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the correlation with bone mineral density (BMD) in different areas of the body. METHODS A total of 434 postmenopausal women with T2DM were enrolled and categorized as 198 patients in the NAFLD group and 236 patients in the non-NAFLD group based on color Doppler ultrasound of the liver. The BMD of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS In postmenopausal women with T2DM, the prevalence of NAFLD was 45.6%. The body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), triacylglycerol (TG), uric acid (UA), and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) C-peptide (CP) were significantly higher in the NAFLD group than in the non-NFALD group, and the duration of diabetes, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were lower than in the non-NAFLD group (P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that BMI (odds ratio [OR] = 1.303, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.152-1.346), HbA1c (OR = 1.263, 95% CI: 1.095-1.392), TG (OR = 1.263, 95% CI: 1.031-1.601), and SUA (OR = 1.005, 95% CI: 1.001-1.007) were correlated with NAFLD (P < 0.05). The BMD of the total hip and femoral neck in the NAFLD group was higher than in the non-NAFLD group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Complicated NAFLD in postmenopausal women with T2DM is associated with weight gain, poor blood glucose control, abnormal lipid metabolism, and elevated UA levels. In addition, the NAFLD group had higher femoral neck and total hip BMD than the non-NAFLD group, suggesting NAFLD in postmenopausal women with T2DM may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Background: Dementia, as a global public health problem, is becoming increasingly serious. As a precursor of dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) plays an important role in the diagnosis and prevention of dementia. Recent studies have found a correlation between gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels and cognitive function in men. The relationship between GGT levels and cognitive function in women remains unclear because GGT activity and expression differ between the sexes. Method: We recruited a total of 2,943 Chinese women from Jidong and Taian in 2019. We grouped the participants according to GGT levels, diagnosed MCI using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) scale, and modeled the study outcomes using logistic regression to explore the relationship between GGT level and MCI. We also analyzed the interaction of obesity, sleep duration, and hyperuricemia with GGT in the development of MCI. Results: The prevalence of MCI increased with increasing GGT level, from the lowest quartile to the highest quartile of GGT: 8.4% (66/786), 14.2% (119/840), 17.6% (108/613), and 21.4% (151/704), respectively. At the same time, as GGT levels increased, so did the risk of MCI. In the fully adjusted model, compared with those for participants in the lowest GGT quartiles, the odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MCI for participants in the second, third, and fourth GGT quartiles were 1.49 (1.04-2.12), 1.53(1.06-2.21), and 1.88 (1.33-2.65), respectively. The risk of developing MCI was further increased in people with high GGT levels who were obese (OR = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.39-2.76, P < 0.001), slept less (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.35-2.71, P < 0.001), had high levels of uric acid (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.03-2.32, P < 0.001), or after menopause (OR = 2.92, 95% CI: 2.07-4.12, P < 0.001). Conclusion: We found that MCI is more common in women with elevated GGT levels, so GGT could be a potential diagnostic marker for MCI. Meanwhile, our findings indicated that women with high GGT levels had an increased risk of MCI when they were obese, sleep deprived, had high serum uric acid (SUA) levels or underwent menopause.

Abstract
Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, as well as the cumulative risk of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) regulation in the Chinese adult population after 6 years of follow-up. Methods: A total of 1360 apparently healthy Chinese men and women who completed a community-based health examination survey and did not have IFG in central China in 2010 and 2016 were included in this study. The patients were divided into four groups according to their baseline GGT (in quartiles). The relationship between GGT levels and FBG levels was examined using general linear regression models. The effect of the GGT level on the risk of IFG was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. The first quartile group of GGT levels was set as the dummy variable in the model, and the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of the remaining quartile groups relative to the first quartile group were obtained. Results: After 6 years of follow-up, 16.4% (188/1148) of participants were diagnosed with IFG. The cumulative incidence of IFG in the four groups according to their baseline GGT levels (in quartiles) was 7.7%, 16.1%, 15.8%, and 26.8%, respectively. Based on the Cox multiple regression, the hazard ratio for IFG increased by 28.9% for each unit of increase in the baseline GGT level after adjusting for the confounding factors. The GGT levels of participants in the first quartile were used as the reference group. The relative risks of IFG in the second, third, and fourth quartiles of GGT were 1.70, 1.55, and 2.46, respectively (P = 0.005). Conclusions: GGT was positively associated with the risk of IFG and can be used as an indicator to assess whether a patient may develop prediabetes.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) prevalence in women is increasing worldwide. Women of reproductive age have lower rates of NAFLD compared with men; however, this protection is lost following the menopausal transition when NAFLD prevalence in postmenopausal women becomes similar to or surpasses that in age-matched male counterparts. Ongoing epidemiological, clinical, and experimental studies indicate greater NAFLD risk and higher rates of severe hepatic fibrosis in postmenopausal women relative to premenopausal women, and that older women with NAFLD experience greater mortality than men. Investigations involving ovariectomized animal models demonstrate a causal relationship between estrogen deficiency and heightened susceptibility to the development of fatty liver and steatohepatitis, although dietary factors may exacerbate this complex relationship. The accumulated findings suggest that a better understanding of the interplay among menopausal status, metabolic comorbidities, and sex steroids in NAFLD pathogenesis is needed. Further, the mechanisms underlying the difference in NAFLD risk between postmenopausal and premenopausal women remain incompletely understood. The goals of this review are to summarize studies of NAFLD risk in postmenopausal women, discuss results from animal models of estrogen deficiency, and explore the development of NAFD within the context of altered sex hormone profiles resulting from the menopausal transition. Potential implications for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of NAFLD in this relatively understudied cohort are also addressed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of most important concerns of postmenopausal women is obesity. The relationships between menstruation status and obesity phenotypes are unclear. This study aimed to assess the associations between menstrual status and different obesity phenotypes in women. METHODS In total, 5373 women aged ≥40 years were recruited from the Jidong and Kailuan communities. Basic information was collected via clinical examination, laboratory testing and standardized questionnaires. The women were stratified into the following three groups: menstrual period, menopausal transition period and postmenopausal period. General obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) of ≥28 kg/m2. Central obesity was defined as a waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) of > 0.85. Visceral obesity was defined as the presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and increased pericardial fat volume (PFV). RESULTS The numbers of women in the menstrual, menopausal transition, and postmenopausal periods were 2807 (52.2%), 675 (12.6%) and 1891 (35.2%), respectively. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for central obesity among women in the menopausal transition and postmenopausal periods compared with women in the menstrual period were 0.99 (0.82-1.19) and 1.52 (1.26-1.84), respectively. The OR for NAFLD among postmenopausal women was 1.78 (1.44-2.20). The adjusted β-coefficient (standard error, SE) for PFV among postmenopausal women was 41.25 (7.49). The adjusted OR for general obesity among postmenopausal women was 1.01 (0.77-1.34). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that menopause is an independent risk factor for central and visceral obesity but not general obesity.
