Salmonella manipulates macrophage migration via SteC-mediated myosin light chain activation to penetrate the gut-vascular barrier

The intestinal pathogen Salmonella enterica rapidly enters the bloodstream after the invasion of intestinal epithelial cells, but how Salmonella breaks through the gut-vascular barrier is largely unknown. Here, we report that Salmonella enters the bloodstream through intestinal CX3CR1+ macrophages during early infection. Mechanistically, Salmonella induces the migration/invasion properties of macrophages in a manner dependent on host cell actin and on the pathogen effector SteC. SteC recruits host myosin light chain protein Myl12a and phosphorylates its Ser19 and Thr20 residues. Myl12a phosphorylation results in actin rearrangement, and enhanced migration and invasion of macrophages. SteC is able to utilize a wide range of NTPs other than ATP to phosphorylate Myl12a. We further solved the crystal structure of SteC, which suggests an atypical dimerization-mediated catalytic mechanism. Finally, in vivo data show that SteC-mediated cytoskeleton manipulation is crucial for Salmonella breaching the gut vascular barrier and spreading to target organs.

Research progress of exosomes in the angiogenesis of digestive system tumour

Malignant tumours of the digestive system cover a wide range of diseases that affect the health of people to a large extent. Angiogenesis is indispensable in the development, and metastasis of tumours, mainly in two ways: occupation or formation. Vessels can provide nutrients, oxygen, and growth factors for tumours to encourage growth and metastasis, so cancer progression depends on simultaneous angiogenesis. Recently, exosomes have been proven to participate in the angiogenesis of tumours. They influence angiogenesis by binding to tyrosine kinase receptors (VEGFR)-1, VEGFR-2, and VEGFR-3 with different affinities, regulating Yap-VEGF pathway, Akt pathway or other signaling pathway. Additionally, exosomes are potential therapeutic vectors that can deliver many types of cargoes to different cells. In this review, we summarize the roles of exosomes in the angiogenesis of digestive system tumours and highlight the clinical application prospects, directly used as targers or delivery vehicles, in antiangiogenic therapy.

HLA-C*15:02 and epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor-induced erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp

Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs) are widely used to treat various types of malignancies. One of the common adverse reactions is cutaneous toxicity, mostly presenting as acneiform eruptions, paronychia and xerosis. Erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp (EPDS) is a rare cutaneous adverse reaction that develops during treatment with EGFRIs. The pathogenesis of EGFRI-induced EPDS is poorly understood. Here we present three cases of EPDS induced by EGFRIs. The proteins LTA4H (leukotriene A-4 hydrolase), METAP1 (methionine aminopeptidase 1), BID (BH3-interacting domain death agonist), SMAD1 (mothers against decapentaplegic homologue), PRKRA (interferon-inducible double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase activator A), YES1 (tyrosine-protein kinase Yes) and EGFL7 (epidermal growth factor-like protein 7) were significantly upregulated in EGFRI-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cell cultures, and validated in the lesions. All of the proteins colocalized with CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell expression. Next-generation-based human leucocyte antigen (HLA) typing showed all patients carried HLA-C*15:02, and modelling studies showed that afatinib and erlotinib bound well within the E/F binding pockets of HLA-C*15:02. Moreover, T cells were preferentially activated by EGFRIs in individuals carrying HLA-C*15:02. The case series revealed that EGFRI-induced EPDS may be mediated by drug-specific T cells.

N6-methyladenosine methylation in kidney injury

Multiple mechanisms are involved in kidney damage, among which the role of epigenetic modifications in the occurrence and development of kidney diseases is constantly being revealed. However, N6-methyladenosine (M6A), a well-known post-transcriptional modification, has been regarded as the most prevalent epigenetic modifications in higher eukaryotic, which is involved in various biological processes of cells such as maintaining the stability of mRNA. The role of M6A modification in the mechanism of kidney damage has attracted widespread attention. In this review, we mainly summarize the role of M6A modification in the progression of kidney diseases from the following aspects: the regulatory pattern of N6-methyladenosine, the critical roles of N6-methyladenosine in chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury and renal cell carcinoma, and then reveal its potential significance in the diagnosis and treatment of various kidney diseases. A better understanding of this field will be helpful for future research and clinical treatment of kidney diseases.

The role of organoids in cancer research

Organoids are established through in vitro 3D culture, and they can mimic the structure and physiological functions of organs or tissues in vivo. Organoids have attracted much attention in recent years. They can provide a reliable technology platform for cancer research and treatment and are a valuable preclinical model for academic research and personalized medicine. A number of studies have confirmed that organoids have great application prospects in new drug development, drug screening, tumour mechanism research, and precision medicine. In this review, we mainly focus on recent advances in the application of organoids in cancer research. We also discussed the opportunities and challenges facing organoids, hoping to indicate directions for the development of organoids in the future.

Multiphysics Interaction Analysis of the Therapeutic Effects of the Sigmoid Sinus Wall Reconstruction in Patients with Venous Pulsatile Tinnitus

Sigmoid sinus wall dehiscence (SSWD) is an important etiology of venous pulsatile tinnitus (VPT) and is treated by sigmoid sinus wall reconstruction (SSWR). This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of the different degrees of SSWR and the prognostic effect in patients with VPT. Personalized models of three patients with SSWD (control), 3/4SSWD, 1/2SSWD, 1/4SSWD, and 0SSWD were reconstructed. A multiphysics interaction approach was applied to elucidate the biomechanical and acoustic changes. Results revealed that after SSWR, the average pressure of venous vessel on the SSWD region reduced by 33.70 ± 12.53%, 35.86 ± 12.39%, and 39.70 ± 12.45% (mean ± SD) in three patients with 3/4SSWD, 1/2SSWD, and 1/4SSWD. The maximum displacement of the SSWR region reduced by 25.91 ± 30.20%, 37.20 ± 31.47%, 52.60 ± 34.66%, and 79.35 ± 18.13% (mean ± SD) in three patients with 3/4SSWD, 1/2SSWD, 1/4SSWD, and 0SSWD, with a magnitude approximately 10^-3 times that of the venous vessel in the SSWD region. The sound pressure level at the tympanum reduced by 23.72 ± 1.91%, 31.03 ± 14.40%, 45.62 ± 19.11%, and 128.46 ± 15.46% (mean ± SD). The SSWR region was still loaded with high stress in comparison to the surrounding region. The SSWR region of the temporal bone effectively shielded the high wall pressure and blocked the transmission of venous vessel vibration to the inner ear. Patients with inadequate SSWR still had residual VPT symptoms despite the remission of VPT symptoms. Complete SSWR could completely solve VPT issues. High-stress distribution of the SSWR region may be the cause of the recurrence of VPT symptoms.

Climate change and Aedes albopictus risks in China: current impact and future projection

BACKGROUND

Future distribution of dengue risk is usually predicted based on predicted climate changes using general circulation models (GCMs). However, it is difficult to validate the GCM results and assess the uncertainty of the predictions. The observed changes in climate may be very different from the GCM results. We aim to utilize trends in observed climate dynamics to predict future risks of Aedes albopictus in China.

METHODS

We collected Ae. albopictus surveillance data and observed climate records from 80 meteorological stations from 1970 to 2021. We analyzed the trends in climate change in China and made predictions on future climate for the years 2050 and 2080 based on trend analyses. We analyzed the relationship between climatic variables and the prevalence of Ae. albopictus in different months/seasons. We built a classification tree model (based on the average of 999 runs of classification and regression tree analyses) to predict the monthly/seasonal Ae. albopictus distribution based on the average climate from 1970 to 2000 and assessed the contributions of different climatic variables to the Ae. albopictus distribution. Using these models, we projected the future distributions of Ae. albopictus for 2050 and 2080.

RESULTS

The study included Ae. albopictus surveillance from 259 sites in China found that winter to early spring (November-February) temperatures were strongly correlated with Ae. albopictus prevalence (prediction accuracy ranges 93.0-98.8%)-the higher the temperature the higher the prevalence, while precipitation in summer (June-September) was important predictor for Ae. albopictus prevalence. The machine learning tree models predicted the current prevalence of Ae. albopictus with high levels of agreement (accuracy > 90% and Kappa agreement > 80% for all 12 months). Overall, winter temperature contributed the most to Ae. albopictus distribution, followed by summer precipitation. An increase in temperature was observed from 1970 to 2021 in most places in China, and annual change rates varied substantially from -0.22 ºC/year to 0.58 ºC/year among sites, with the largest increase in temperature occurring from February to April (an annual increase of 1.4-4.7 ºC in monthly mean, 0.6-4.0 ºC in monthly minimum, and 1.3-4.3 ºC in monthly maximum temperature) and the smallest in November and December. Temperature increases were lower in the tropics/subtropics (1.5-2.3 ºC from February-April) compared to the high-latitude areas (2.6-4.6 ºC from February-April). The projected temperatures in 2050 and 2080 by this study were approximately 1-1.5 °C higher than those projected by GCMs. The estimated current Ae. albopictus risk distribution had a northern boundary of north-central China and the southern edge of northeastern China, with a risk period of June-September. The projected future Ae. albopictus risks in 2050 and 2080 cover nearly all of China, with an expanded risk period of April-October. The current at-risk population was estimated to be 960 million and the future at-risk population was projected to be 1.2 billion.

CONCLUSIONS

The magnitude of climate change in China is likely to surpass GCM predictions. Future dengue risks will expand to cover nearly all of China if current climate trends continue.

Dupilumab: Advances in the off-label usage of IL4/IL13 antagonist in dermatoses

Type 2 immune response refers to a complicated series of immune responses characterized by Th2 polarization and Th2 cytokines secretion. The IgE secretion, airway hypersensitivity, and effector cell recruitment (eosinophils, mast cells, basophils) in skin lesion and peripheral blood stream could be upregulated during the activation of type 2 immune response. Th1/Th2 ratio, also referred as Th1/Th2 balance, represent the T lymphocytes immune pattern to a certain degree: Th1-dominated responses are often involved in intracellular infections (e.g., mycobacterium tuberculosis) and autoimmune diseases (e.g., Graves' disease) while Th2-dominated responses are involved in allergic conditions (e.g., atopic dermatitis, eczema), IgE mediated diseases (e.g., urticaria), and fibrotic dermatoses (e.g., keloids). Dupilumab, as one of the most widely applied Th2 cytokine inhibitors, could block the bioactivity of IL-14/IL-13 via competitively binding to the common IL-4Rα subunit shared by IL-4 and IL-13 receptors. In addition to the direct inhibition of type 2 response, dupilumab is also effective in autoimmune and some infectious skin diseases through indirect regulation of type 1 immune response. The pathological mechanism of Th2 responses and advanced clinical application of dupilumab in skin diseases will be summarized and discussed in the review.

Melatonin enhances osteoblastogenesis of senescent bone marrow stromal cells through NSD2-mediated chromatin remodelling

BACKGROUND

Aging-associated osteoporosis is frequently seen in the elderly in clinic, but efficient managements are limited because of unclear nosogenesis. The current study aims to investigate the role of melatonin on senescent bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and the underlying regulating mechanism.

METHODS

Melatonin levels were tested by ELISA. Gene expression profiles were performed by RNA-sequencing, enrichment of H3K36me2 on gene promoters was analyzed by Chromatin Immunoprecipitation Sequencing (ChIP-seq), and chromatin accessibility was determined by Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin with high-throughput sequencing (ATAC-seq). Osteogenesis of BMSCs in vitro was measured by Alizarin Red and Alkaline Phosphatase staining, and in vivo effects of melatonin was assessed by histological staining and micro computed tomography (micro-CT) scan. Correlation of NSD2 expression and severity of senile osteoporosis patients were analyzed by Pearson correlation.

RESULTS

Melatonin levels were decreased during aging in human bone marrow, accompanied by downregulation of the histone methyltransferase nuclear receptor binding SET domain protein 2 (NSD2) expression in the senescent BMSCs. Melatonin stimulated the expression of NSD2 through MT1/2-mediated signaling pathways, resulting in the rebalancing of H3K36me2 and H3K27me3 modifications to increase chromatin accessibility of the osteogenic genes, runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) and bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein (BGLAP). Melatonin promoted osteogenesis of BMSCs in vitro, and alleviates osteoporosis progression in the aging mice. In clinic, severity of senile osteoporosis (SOP) was negatively correlated with melatonin level in bone marrow, as well as NSD2 expression in BMSCs. Similarly, melatonin remarkably enhanced osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs derived from SOP patients in vitro.

CONCLUSIONS

Collectively, our study dissects previously unreported mechanistic insights into the epigenetic regulating machinery of melatonin in meliorating osteogenic differentiation of senescent BMSC, and provides evidence for application of melatonin in preventing aging-associated bone loss.

IL13Rα1 prevents a castration resistant phenotype of prostate cancer by targeting hexokinase 2 for ubiquitin-mediated degradation

OBJECTIVE

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is still the principal treatment option for prostate cancer (PCa). In addition to reactivation of androgen receptor signaling, the resistance of PCa to apoptosis during ADT also contributes to castration resistant PCa (CRPC). A previous study reported that gene transfer of IL-13Rα2 into PCa cells sensitized the cells to the IL-13R-targeted cytotoxin IL13Rα1, leading to apoptosis. Compared with IL-13Rα2, IL13Rα1 is more constitutively expressed in PCa cells, but its function in PCa remains to be established.

METHODS

We determined the role and expression of IL13Rα1 in PCa cancer cells using western blotting, flow cytometry, and cell proliferation assays. Co-immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry were used to identify the proteins that interacted with IL13Rα1, to elucidate its function.

RESULTS

In this study, we showed that IL13Rα1 was selectively suppressed in androgen-deprived PCa cells and that its suppression tended to be associated with poor prognoses of PCa patients. IL13Rα1 overexpression promoted apoptosis and inhibited tumor growth under androgen-deprived or castrated conditions (P < 0.01). Mechanistically, IL13Rα1 recruited and facilitated ubiquitin protein ligase E3C-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of hexokinase 2 (HK2), resulting in glycolytic inhibition and eventually leading to PCa cell apoptosis. Furthermore, our data revealed that mutated ataxia-telangiectasia kinase phosphorylated and facilitated the selective ubiquitin proteasome-mediated degradation of HK2. Notably, IL13Rα1-overexpressing PCa cells were more susceptible to apoptosis and exhibited reduced tumor growth after exposure to the HK2 inhibitor, 2-deoxy-D-glucose (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Our data identified a tumor suppressor role for IL13Rα1 in preventing the resistance of PCa cells to apoptosis during androgen deprivation by inhibiting glycolysis. IL13Rα1-mediated signaling involving HK2 may therefore provide a novel treatment target and strategy for CRPC.

Sonication fluid culture of antibiotic-loaded bone cement spacer has high accuracy to confirm eradication of infection before reimplantation of new prostheses

BACKGROUND

Sonication fluid culture of antibiotic-loaded bone cement spacer has been used to predict reinfection of two-stage revision, but its value remains disputable. This study aims to evaluate the association between the culture result of the sonicated spacer and the status of patients with periprosthetic joint infection receiving two-stage revision.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A comprehensive electronic literature search was performed through four databases including PubMed, Embase/Ovid, and EBSCO, and the Cochrane Library to retrieve studies in which sonication fluid culture of the antibiotic spacer was conducted before reimplantation. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) were calculated to assess the association between the culture result of sonicated spacer and prognosis of the two-stage revision.

RESULTS

Eleven eligible studies comprising 603 artificial joints with PJI (134 suffering a clinical failure of two-stage revision) were included in the quantitative analysis. The pooled incidences of positive culture of sonicated spacer and intraoperative tissue were 0.14 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.08-0.21) and 0.14 (95% CI 0.08-0.20), respectively. A positive culture of sonicated antibiotic-loaded bone cement spacer illustrated moderate sensitivity (0.31, 95% CI 0.13-0.58) but high specificity (0.94, 95% CI 0.86-0.98) for the diagnosis of therapeutic failure of two-stage revision; the pooled DOR was 7.67 (95% CI, 3.63-16.22). Meanwhile, the pooled sensitivity, specificity, and DOR of intraoperative tissue culture during the two-stage revision to predict therapeutic failure were 0.32 (95% CI, 0.20-0.47), 0.96 (95% CI, 0.92-0.98), and 10.62 (95% CI, 4.90-23.01), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Sonication fluid culture of antibiotic-loaded bone cement spacer revealed high accuracy for confirming eradication of infection before reimplantation of new prostheses and therefore could be used as a supplement for assessing therapeutic effect for PJI. However, both sonication fluid culture and intraoperative tissue culture from antibiotic-loaded bone cement spacer showed restricted yield for the prediction of a septic failure after the two-stage revision of PJI. Large-scale, prospective studies are still needed to testify current findings.

The protective role of serum uric acid against premature membrane rupture in gestational diabetes: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Uric acid has strong antioxidant activity, whereas its oxidative damage is closely related to many diseases. We assessed the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and premature rupture of membranes (PROM) in pregnant women with gestational diabetes (GDM) in China.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, a total of 456 pregnant women were enrolled. Anthropometric parameters for pregnant women were collected within 12 weeks of gestation. Weight gain during pregnancy was obtained from the patients' records. GDM was diagnosed according to 75-g oral glucose tolerance tests at the 24-28th week of gestation, and SUA was determined simultaneously. PROM was identified as the natural rupture of foetal membranes before the first stage of labour. Logistic models were fitted to identify the presence of PROM using clinical characteristics with (Model 2) or without serum uric acid (Model 1).

RESULTS

There were differences in BMI, haemoglobin A1c, fasting blood glucose, 1-h postprandial glucose (PG), 2-h PG, insulin levels, triglycerides,weight gain during pregnancy, the rate of macrosomia, fetus birth weight and PROM between women with and without GDM (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, GDM women with PROM had lower levels of SUA compared to those without PROM (P = 0.030). The odds ratio of PROM decreased with increasing SUA levels. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for PROM based on Model 2 was larger than that in Model 1 (0.86 versus 0.71, P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Relatively elevated SUA levels at the 24-28th weeks of gestation were associated with a lower risk of PROM in women with GDM. Therefore, SUA may be a protective factor for PROM in GDM patients. The optimal concentration of uric acid in different diseases and different populations needs to be further studied.

Comparative proteomics reveals mechanisms that underlie insecticide resistance in Culex pipiens pallens Coquillett

Mosquito control based on chemical insecticides is considered as an important element of the current global strategies for the control of mosquito-borne diseases. Unfortunately, the development of insecticide resistance of important vector mosquito species jeopardizes the effectiveness of insecticide-based mosquito control. In contrast to target site resistance, other mechanisms are far from being fully understood. Global protein profiles among cypermethrin-resistant, propoxur-resistant, dimethyl-dichloro-vinyl-phosphate-resistant and susceptible strain of Culex pipiens pallens were obtained and proteomic differences were evaluated by using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification labeling coupled with liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometric analysis. A susceptible strain of Culex pipiens pallens showed elevated resistance levels after 25 generations of insecticide selection, through iTRAQ data analysis detected 2,502 proteins, of which 1,513 were differentially expressed in insecticide-selected strains compared to the susceptible strain. Finally, midgut differential protein expression profiles were analyzed, and 62 proteins were selected for verification of differential expression using iTRAQ and parallel reaction monitoring strategy, respectively. iTRAQ profiles of adaptation selection to three insecticide strains combined with midgut profiles revealed that multiple insecticide resistance mechanisms operate simultaneously in resistant insects of Culex pipiens pallens. Significant molecular resources were developed for Culex pipiens pallens, potential candidates were involved in metabolic resistance and reducing penetration or sequestering insecticide. Future research that is targeted towards RNA interference of the identified metabolic targets, such as cuticular proteins, cytochrome P450s, glutathione S-transferases and ribosomal proteins proteins and biological pathways (drug metabolism—cytochrome P450, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, oxidative phosphorylation, ribosome) could lay the foundation for a better understanding of the genetic basis of insecticide resistance in Culex pipiens pallens.

Global protein profiles were compared among a susceptible strain of Cx. pipiens pallens and strains that were cypermethrin-resistant, propoxur-resistant, and dimethyl-dichloro-vinyl-phosphate-resistant after 25 generations of selection by distinct chemical insecticide families, multiple mechanisms were found to operate simultaneously in resistant mosquitoes of Cx. pipiens pallens, including mechanisms to lower penetration of or sequester the insecticide or to increase biodegradation of the insecticide via subtle alterations in either the cuticular protein levels or the activities of detoxification enzymes (P450s and glutathione S-transferases).

Sensitivity evaluation of 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) RT-PCR detection kits and strategy to reduce false negative

The early detection and differential diagnosis of respiratory infections increase the chances for successful control of COVID-19 disease. The nucleic acid RT-PCR test is regarded as the current standard for molecular diagnosis. However, the maximal specificity confirmation target ORF1ab gene is considered to be less sensitive than other targets in clinical application. In addition, recent evidence indicated that the initial missed diagnosis of asymptomatic patients with SARS-CoV-2 and discharged patients with "re-examination positive" might be due to low viral load, and the ability of rapid mutation of SARS-CoV-2 also increases the rate of false-negative results. Moreover, the mixed sample nucleic acid detection is helpful in seeking out the early community transmission of SARS-CoV-2 rapidly, but the detection kit needs ultra-high detection sensitivity. Herein, the lowest detection concentration of different nucleic acid detection kits was evaluated and compared to provide direct evidence for the selection of kits for mixed sample detection or make recommendations for the selection of validation kit, which is of great significance for the prevention and control of the current epidemic and the discharge criteria of low viral load patients.

Comparative proteomic analysis of silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis in rats based on tandem mass tag (TMT) quantitation technology

Silicosis is a systemic disease characterized by chronic persistent inflammation and incurable pulmonary fibrosis with the underlying molecular mechanisms to be fully elucidated. In this study, we employed tandem mass tag (TMT) based on quantitative proteomics technology to detect differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in lung tissues of silica-exposed rats. A total of 285 DEPs (145 upregulated and 140 downregulated) were identified. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were performed to predict the biological pathway and functional classification of the proteins. Results showed that these DEPs were mainly enriched in the phagosome, lysosome function, complement and the coagulation cascade, glutathione metabolism, focal adhesion and ECM-receptor interactions. To validate the proteomics data, we selected and analyzed the expression trends of six proteins including CD14, PSAP, GM2A, COL1A1, ITGA8 and CLDN5 using parallel reaction monitoring (PRM). The consistent result between PRM and TMT indicated the reliability of our proteomic data. These findings will help to reveal the pathogenesis of silicosis and provide potential therapeutic targets. Relationships between menstrual status and obesity phenotypes in women: a cross-sectional study in northern China

BACKGROUND

One of most important concerns of postmenopausal women is obesity. The relationships between menstruation status and obesity phenotypes are unclear. This study aimed to assess the associations between menstrual status and different obesity phenotypes in women.

METHODS

In total, 5373 women aged ≥40 years were recruited from the Jidong and Kailuan communities. Basic information was collected via clinical examination, laboratory testing and standardized questionnaires. The women were stratified into the following three groups: menstrual period, menopausal transition period and postmenopausal period. General obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) of ≥28 kg/m². Central obesity was defined as a waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) of > 0.85. Visceral obesity was defined as the presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and increased pericardial fat volume (PFV).

RESULTS

The numbers of women in the menstrual, menopausal transition, and postmenopausal periods were 2807 (52.2%), 675 (12.6%) and 1891 (35.2%), respectively. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for central obesity among women in the menopausal transition and postmenopausal periods compared with women in the menstrual period were 0.99 (0.82-1.19) and 1.52 (1.26-1.84), respectively. The OR for NAFLD among postmenopausal women was 1.78 (1.44-2.20). The adjusted β-coefficient (standard error, SE) for PFV among postmenopausal women was 41.25 (7.49). The adjusted OR for general obesity among postmenopausal women was 1.01 (0.77-1.34).

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated that menopause is an independent risk factor for central and visceral obesity but not general obesity.
