Abstract
Evidence links immune system alterations to major psychiatric disorders. The few previous studies on personality traits or personality disorders (PDs) indicate that immunometabolic dysregulation may be prevalent in this population. This study aimed to investigate relationships between personality traits, PDs, and immunometabolic markers in peripheral blood. We hypothesized that neuroticism would be correlated with elevated leptin. Participants were recruited as young adults seeking care for general psychiatric disorders. They responded to a personality inventory and were assessed for PDs, and reevaluated again at a 12 years follow-up. Blood samples were collected at the follow-up and analyzed for 29 immunometabolic markers. A positive correlation was found between the personality trait neuroticism and leptin (ρ = 0.31, p = 0.02). An exploratory analysis also revealed a positive correlation between brain-derived neurotrophic factor (ρ = 0.36, p < 0.01) and neuroticism. These findings remained after adjusting for other variables in general linear models. There were no relationships between PDs and any immunometabolic markers. Results both confirm previous findings of correlations between the immunometabolic system and personality traits and suggest directions for future research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study aimed to compare acyl ghrelin (AG), des-acyl ghrelin (DAG), and leptin levels considered to be used as biological markers in the etiopathogenesis of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) with healthy controls, and to investigate the relationship between these hormones and aggression and impulsivity. METHOD The study included 45 patients with ASPD and 61 healthy people in the control group. Sociodemographic data form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), and Buss-Durkee Aggression Scale (BDAS) were applied to all participants. Fasting venous blood samples were taken from all participants at the same time of the day and the height and weight of the participants were measured. RESULTS It was found that the mean serum AG and DAG levels were significantly higher than that of healthy controls whereas leptin hormone levels were significantly lower in patients compared to healthy controls. BDI, BAI, BIS-11, and BDAS scores of the patients were significantly higher compared to healthy controls. There was a positive correlation between AG and DAG hormone levels and impulsivity and aggression. DISCUSSION The present study is the first in the literature to examine AG, DAG, and leptin hormone levels of patients diagnosed with ASPD. According to the results of the study, it is believed that changes in serum leptin and ghrelin levels will bring a new perspective in terms of understanding the pathophysiological mechanism of ASPD. Further studies are required to explain the definitive roles of these hormones in ASPD.

Abstract
Background:
Hunger hormones, including ghrelin and leptin, are associated with appetitive behaviors in various psychiatric disorders. Biochemical and hormonal status in disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) in adolescents is largely unexplored.
Objectives:
The study aimed to assess levels of leptin and ghrelin and find their association with lipid profiles in adolescents with DMDD.
Methods:
Twenty adolescents with a DSM 5 diagnosis of DMDD with age and gender-matched 19 healthy controls were recruited, followed by clinical assessment. They were assessed for leptin, ghrelin, and lipid profiles, respectively.
Results:
Adolescents with DMDD were comparable in age, education, family income, domicile status, psychiatric illness in the family, and body mass index (BMI) with matched controls. There was no difference in mean lipid profile and ghrelin in both groups. However, the DMDD group had statistically significant higher mean level of leptin as compared to the control group (t=1.84, p < 0.05). As measured by the Modified Overt Aggression Scale in DMDD, aggression showed a significant positive correlation with measures of lipid profile.
Conclusion:
Adolescents with DMDD have elevated serum leptin levels. Further research is needed to confirm this finding.

Abstract
Objective: Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescence. Genetic studies implicate the genetic component of suicide independent from associated psychiatric disorder. Although genetics is an important factor that might be associated with suicide, limited progress is achieved to identify the candidate genes in adolescents.Methods: The study included 97 patients and 106 controls. Five leptin receptor single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) region examined. Depressive scores were measured with Children Depression Inventory and suicidal behaviour was measured by Suicide Probability Scale. Logistic and linear regression analysis used for determining to predictors.Results: In linear regression analysis (R2: 0.786) both previous suicide attempt (B:5.553, t:2.613 p: .035) and having a mutant allele in rs1171276 SNP region (B:4.346 t:2.220 p: .048) have been associated with suicidal behaviour. In logistic regression analysis, family history of depression (p < .0001, OR: 4.2 [1.7-9.6]) and number of stressful life events (p: .001, OR: 1.7 [1.3-2.1]) predicted depression significantly.Conclusion: Leptin receptor polymorphism could result in an increase in impulsive behaviour and suicide scores with leptin resistance. Our research is the first study to investigate the relationship between depression, suicidal behaviour and leptin receptor polymorphism in adolescent sample. Similar studies could be carried out on a community basis.KEY POINTSAn association has been found between rs1171276 single nucleotide polymorphism of leptin receptor and the suicide probability scores in depressed adolescents.Family history of depression and number of stressful life events predict depressive scores significantly.Leptin receptor single nucleotide polymorphism may be a risk factor for adolescent suicide by increasing impulsive behaviour.

Abstract
Objective: We conducted a meta-analysis of case-control studies to determine whether leptin levels in serum contribute to the pathogenesis of suicide behavior.Methods: PubMed, EBSCO and Science Direct databases were used to search for relevant articles published before January 2020. The systematic review included nine case-control studies that measured leptin levels. The standardized mean difference (d) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated in a fixed-effects model and a random-effects model when appropriate.Results: The results of our meta-analysis indicated that individuals with suicide behavior presented reduced levels of leptin (d: -1.80, 95% CI: -2.21 to -01.38 ng/ml, I2 = 0, p(Q) = 0.59). Sensitivity and publication bias analyses confirmed these results.Conclusions: The current meta-analysis suggests that leptin levels might be associated with an increased risk of suicide behavior. However, more studies including larger sample sizes are needed to reach conclusive result.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysregulation of leptin secretion and functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis may be involved in the pathophysiology of suicide. Preclinical and clinical studies have shown interactions between the HPA axis and leptin. There is also evidence for a negative relationship between leptin and anxiety in humans. However, these possible associations have not been studied in individuals with attempted suicide. OBJECTIVES To examine the relationship between leptin, HPA axis activity, and anxiety in individuals with a recent suicide attempt. METHOD Sixty-nine individuals with a recent suicide attempt (n = 37 females; n = 32 males) were recruited and subjected to the Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST), lumbar puncture, and evaluation with the Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale from which the Brief Scale for Anxiety (BSA) was derived. Leptin was analyzed in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and cortisol in serum. Leptin was corrected for body mass index (BMI) by dividing CSF-leptin by BMI (CSF-leptin/BMI). Due to gender-related differences in leptin secretion and HPA axis activity, calculations were made for males and females separately. RESULTS Significant differences were only found among females; CSF-leptin/BMI levels correlated significantly and negatively with BSA (p < 0.05), pre-DST cortisol, and post-DST serum cortisol at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, CSF-leptin/BMI was significantly lower in nonsuppressors of dexamethasone as compared to suppressors (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that in females with a recent suicide attempt, low CSF leptin may be related to symptoms of anxiety and a hyperactive HPA axis.

Abstract
Several studies have reported a link between lipid disorders and suicidality. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between suicidal behavior and blood lipid profiles in patients with first-episode and drug-naive (FEDN) major depressive disorder (MDD). The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between plasma lipid profiles and suicide attempts in a large sample of FEDN MDD patients in the Chinese Han population, which has not been reported. A total of 1,718 MDD outpatients were recruited. Their clinical and demographic data as well as plasma lipid parameters were collected. We obtained suicide attempt data through interviews with patients and their family members. We rated the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) for all patients. The suicide attempt rate of MDD patients was 20.14%, of which 13.68% in the last month and 6.46% in the past. Further, compared with non-attempters, suicide attempters had significantly higher total levels of cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), higher HAMA and HAMD scores, but significantly lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) levels. Logistic regression analysis showed that suicide attempts were correlated with higher TC, lower HDL-c, and higher HAMA and HAMD scores with the adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.35, 0.52,1.28, and 1.08, respectively (all p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that FEDN patients with MDD have a high rate of attempted suicide. In the early stage of MDD patients, certain blood lipid parameters and more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression are correlated with suicide attempts. However, due to the cross-sectional design of this study, it is impossible to draw a causal relationship between lipid profiles and suicide attempts. Moreover, an inverse correlation can also be considered, that is, high cholesterol may be the consequence of suicide attempts and depression.

Abstract
This study is an investigation of neuropsychological performance in patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder and hormonal secretion patterns for ghrelin, leptin, insulin, and glucose. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed in a cohort of n = 30 female patients suffering from eating disorders as well as n = 20 control females. All participants underwent the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), the Trail Making Test (TMT), and a go/no-go task using food vs. neutral stimuli. Patients with anorexia nervosa differed from controls in their leptin response to the OGTT. While the four groups under investigation did not differ in neuropsychological performance, we found leptin responses to the OGTT to be associated with performance in the food-specific go/no-go task. These preliminary results may indicate a putative association between leptin concentrations and neuropsychological performance, particularly in measures of inhibitory control. Further studies investigating the role of leptin in impulsive behaviors in eating disorders would be useful.

Abstract
Small clinical studies suggest depression is associated with alterations in adiponectin and leptin, adipocyte-derived secretory proteins involved in metabolic regulation; however, longitudinal data on these association are lacking. This study examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of depressive symptoms and major depressive disorder (MDD) with adiponectin and leptin in healthy middle-aged women (mean (SD) age, 45.6 (2.5) years). Cross-sectional analyses included 575 women with baseline adipokine data; longitudinal analyses included 262 women with 2-4 adipokine measurements over 5 years. The 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) was used to assess depressive symptoms; history of MDD was determined by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. Adipokines were assayed from stored serum specimens; values were log-transformed for analyses. Linear and repeated measure random effects regression models evaluated associations of baseline CES-D scores with baseline adipokine concentrations and changes over time, respectively. Secondary analyses evaluated the relation of MDD history with adipokine concentrations. Mean (SD) baseline concentrations of adiponectin and leptin were 9.90 (4.92) μg/mL and 27.02 (20.06) ng/mL; both increased over time (p < .0001). CES-D scores were associated with lower adiponectin at baseline (per 1-SD: estimate=-0.04, SE=.02, p=.03) and over time (per 1-SD: estimate=-0.055, SE = .024, p=.02). Associations were unchanged in risk factor-adjusted models. Women with elevated CES-D scores (≥16) had 6.9% (95% CI: -1.1%, 14.3%; p = .089) lower median adiponectin at baseline and 11.5% (95% CI: 1.5%, 20.4%, p = .025) lower median adiponectin over time in adjusted models, compared to women with CES-D<16. Rate of change in adipokines did not vary by baseline depressive symptoms or MDD history. Depressive symptoms and MDD history were unrelated to leptin. In women at midlife, depressive symptoms are associated with lower adiponectin, a critical anti-inflammatory biomarker involved in metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum lipid concentrations and PTSD symptoms in the bereaved after a traumatic familial loss. Eighteen months after the Sewol ferry disaster, 107 subjects who experienced traumatic losses as a result of the accident completed a mental and medical survey as well as laboratory tests for lipid profiles. At 30 months after the trauma, a total of 64 individuals completed a follow-up psychometric survey and biochemical measurements. We performed multiple linear regression analyses, examining the association between PTSD symptoms and lipid profiles. Other potential influences on lipid profiles such as metabolic risk factors, demographic risk factors, and underlying medical history were accounted for. Participants reporting clinically significant PTSD symptoms exhibited lower serum HDL-C levels than those without PTSD symptoms. In addition, we found that the severity of PTSD symptoms and sex could explain the changes in lipid profiles independently of other possible risk factors of changes. The results of this study suggest that PTSD symptoms may contribute to an increased risk for developing metabolic syndrome via detrimental changes in lipid concentrations. Routine screening and multidisciplinary management to prevent metabolic syndrome in individuals who experience traumatic losses would therefore be valuable.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in children and the pathophysiology remains obscure. Some studies show that lipid imbalances are associated with ADHD etiology. We studied the association of serum total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride (TG) levels in ADHD. We examined 88 children aged 8-12 years who were diagnosed with ADHD and 88 healthy children. The exclusion criteria were as follows: obesity, any psychotropic use in the last 3 months, presence of a chronic disease and/or malignancy, history of medically treated lipid metabolism disease in family members, intelligence quotient (IQ) < 70, and comorbidities, with the exception of oppositional defiant disorder. The sample was evaluated using a semi-structured clinical assessment interview and Conners' rating scales. Despite controlling for age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) variables, the total cholesterol and LDL levels were significantly higher in the ADHD group than the levels of healthy controls, whereas the TG and HDL cholesterol levels were similar among groups. Conners' rating scales, reflecting symptom severity, and total cholesterol, TG, HDL, and LDL levels of the ADHD group were not correlated. The study results support the difference in serum lipid and lipoprotein profiles of children with ADHD compared with healthy controls. This difference is thought to be related with changes in oxidant/antioxidant balance states in ADHD.

Abstract
Abstract. Even though cholesterol homeostasis and self-harm behaviors have shown to be associated, gene polymorphisms of the cholesterol system have not been studied yet in the context of self-harm related personality traits. Here we present an association study between six ABCA1 polymorphisms and temperament scales measured by Cloninger’s Temperament and Character Inventory on 253 young adults. An association between ABCA1 rs4149264 and harm avoidance has been observed. This association remained significant after Bonferroni correction. Haplotype analysis confirmed an independent association between rs4149264 and harm avoidance. ABCA1, a cholesterol homeostasis gene, is a candidate gene for harm related personality traits.

Abstract
Pathological impulsivity is encountered in a broad range of psychiatric conditions and is thought to be a risk factor for aggression directed against oneself or others. Recently, a strong association was found between impulsivity and obesity which may explain the high prevalence of metabolic disorders in individuals with mental illness even in the absence of exposure to psychotropic drugs. As the overlapping neurobiology of impulsivity and obesity is being unraveled, the question asked louder and louder is whether they should be treated concomitantly. The treatment of obesity and metabolic dysregulations in chronic psychiatric patients is currently underutilized and often initiated late, making correction more difficult to achieve. Addressing obesity and metabolic dysfunction in a preventive manner may not only lower morbidity and mortality but also the excessive impulsivity, decreasing the risk for aggression. In this review, we take a look beyond psychopharmacological interventions and discuss dietary and physical therapy approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the association between serum lipid levels and suicidality, as evidence from previous studies has been inconsistent. METHODS We identified relevant studies by searching Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (1980 to Dec. 5, 2014). Studies assessing the association between serum total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and/or triglycerides (TG) levels and suicidality were included. We used a random-effects model to take into account heterogeneity among studies. RESULTS We included 65 studies with a total of 510 392 participants in our analysis. Compared with the nonsuicidal patients, suicidal patients had significantly lower serum TC (weighted mean difference [WMD] -22.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] -27.95 to -16.75), LDL-C (WMD -19.56, 95% CI -26.13 to -12.99) and TG (WMD -23.40, 95% CI -32.38 to -14.42) levels, while compared with the healthy controls, suicidal patients had significantly lower TC (WMD -24.75, 95% CI -27.71 to -21.78), HDL-C (WMD -1.75, 95% CI -3.01 to -0.48) and LDL-C (WMD -3.85, 95% CI -7.45 to -0.26) levels. Furthermore, compared with the highest serum TC level category, a lower serum TC level was associated with a 112% (95% CI 40%-220%) higher risk of suicidality, including a 123% (95% CI 24%-302%) higher risk of suicide attempt and an 85% (95 CI 7%-221%) higher risk of suicide completion. The cut-off values for low and high serum TC level were in compliance with the categories reported in the original studies. LIMITATIONS A major limitation of our study is the potential heterogeneity in most of the analyses. In addition, the suicidal behaviour was examined using different scales or methods across studies, which may further explain heterogeneity among the studies. CONCLUSION We identified an inverse association between serum lipid levels and suicidality. More mechanistic studies are needed to further explain this association.

Abstract
Although there is an important interaction between serotonergic system, prolactin and suicidal behavior, and impulsivity, no investigation examined the prolactin values in borderline personality disorder in which suicidal behavior and impulsivity are core symptom dimensions. In this context, in the present investigation, we planned to measure serum prolactin levels in the patients with borderline personality disorder. The study comprised 15 patients with borderline personality disorder and 15 healthy controls. Prolactin values were measured in both patients and control subjects. The patients had abnormally higher mean value of prolactin compared to those of healthy controls (48.66 ± 36.48 mg/dl for patients vs. 15.20 ± 7.81 mg/dl for healthy controls). There was no correlation between prolactin values and any demographic variables for both the patients and control subjects. In conclusion, our present results suggest that prolactin values increased in the patients with borderline personality disorder and are required to be replicated by more comprehensive and detailed further studies to decipher the exact roles of prolactin increase.

Abstract
In neuroimaging on borderline personality disorder, prior studies focused on the hippocampus and amygdala, as mentioned above. However, no study investigated whether there were neurochemical changes in the patients with borderline personality disorder. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to investigate neurochemical change of patients diagnosed with borderline disorder and hypothesized that neurochemicals would change in the hippocampus region of these patients. Seventeen patients and the same number of healthy control subjects were analyzed by using a 1.5 Tesla GE Signa Imaging System. N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline compounds (CHO), and creatine (CRE) values of hippocampal region were measured. The mean NAA/CRE ratio in the hippocampus region was significantly reduced in the patients with borderline personality disorder compared to that of healthy control subjects, In addition, NAA/CHO ratio of the patients with borderline personality disorder was also significantly reduced when compared to that of healthy subjects. There was no difference in the ratio of CHO/CRE. In summary, we present evidence for reduced NAA in the patients with borderline personality disorder.

Abstract
Our aims were, to clarify the blood lipid differences [Total serum cholesterol (TC), High-density lipoprotein (HDL), Low density lipoprotein (LDL), Triglyceride (TG)] between female patients who had attempted suicide and controls and to determine whether we could use the patients׳ initial lipid profiles to predict suicide re-attempt within the subsequent year. A total of 284 participants (110 cases and 174 controls) were recruited, with no differences in body mass index, age, blood sampling time and gender. Blood samples were collected from all participants for serum lipid profiles and assayed in an auto-analyzer. We divided the suicide re-attempter group into suicide attempters in the subsequent year (SSY) and suicide attempters after the subsequent year (SASY). The TC, LDL, and TG levels were significantly lower in the suicidal group than in the control group. HDL was significantly higher in the suicidal group than in the control group. Low TG (<70mg/dL) (OR (odds ratio)=12.8; 95% CI (confidence interval)=5.4-30.5; p<0.0001)and low LDL/HDL (<1.8) (OR=4.1; 95% CI=1.8-9.3; p=0.001) were significantly associated with a current suicide attempt. HDL levels in the SSY (41.5±4.5mg/dL) were lower than in the non-suicide attempters group (NSA) (50.9±10.3mg/dL) and SASY (58.7±12.8mg/dL)(d.f.=2, F=5.2, p=0.007). Serum HDL level may be a potential candidate predictor for the future risk of suicidality.

Abstract
AIM Recently, a large body of studies has focused on the leptin levels in psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to measure serum leptin levels in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) due to a significantly higher prevalence of psychiatric disorder and to determine the relationship between leptin and FMS. METHODS The present study was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Fifty FMS female patients and 50 healthy females serving as a control group were included. Serum samples tested for serum leptin levels were determined by a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS Serum leptin levels were significantly lower in FMS patients compared to the control group. The mean serum leptin in patients with FMS was 7.1 ± 6.8 ng/mL compared to 9.4 ± 4.5 ng/mL in the controls (mean difference, -2.48, 95% CI: -4.78, -0.18, P = 0.035). Serum leptin level is inversely correlated with visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain (P = 0.016), VAS of fatigue (P = 0.002), VAS of global severity (P = 0.011), VAS of anxiety (P = 0.027), global self-rating index (P = 0.020), Health Assessment Questionnaire score (P = 0.016), fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) (P = 0.025), Beck Depression Inventory (P = 0.002), tender points (TPs) count (P = 0.041), TPs score (P = 0.015), and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (P = 0.006). Mean serum leptin levels were also significantly lower in FMS patients with post-exertion pain (P = 0.010), depression (P = 0.029), mood disturbance (P = 0.018), anxiety (P = 0.030), short memory difficulties (P = 0.017), sleep disturbance (P = 0.028), restless leg syndrome (P = 0.016), temperomandibular joint syndrome affection (P = 0.043), palpitation (P = 0.022), and irritable bowel syndrome (P = 0.028) than those without. CONCLUSION We found a significant decrease in serum leptin in FMS patients compared to controls and this decrease correlated with disease severity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obesity has been associated with an elevated risk of depression and other mental health symptoms. An increasing number of robust prospective studies, however, counter-intuitively and consistently suggested that body mass index (BMI) was inversely associated with the risk of completed suicide in a dose-response fashion. The current contribution appraised the epidemiological evidence and examined the nature of the purported relationship. METHOD We conducted a systematic review of English publications of original studies using the terms "obesity", "overweight", "body mass index", "BMI", "attempted suicide", "completed suicide", "suicide ideation", "suicidal behaviors" and "suicide". Data were extracted primarily through MEDLINE and PUBMED databases. RESULTS Almost all cohort studies reported an inverse relationship between BMI and the risk of completed suicide irrespective of region of origin and the gender of study participants. Overall, among men, a high BMI was associated with a low risk of attempted or completed suicide. There was a paradox among women, namely, a high BMI was associated with an elevated risk of attempted suicide but a low risk of completed suicide. LIMITATIONS As a narrative review, the current report was interpretive and qualitative in nature. CONCLUSION Consideration of observational data, methodological issues stemmed from the rarity of deaths by suicide, homogeneity of study populations, heterogeneity of suicide methods, and the corresponding neurobiological changes made interpretation difficult. Intercultural cohort observations across countries may help to weigh the contributions from biological and socio-cultural factors. The purported association not only represents a scientific challenge, it's also an opportunity potentially leading to important insights into prevention of suicide death.

Abstract
Leptin is a hormone with significant effects on the brain, both at the cellular level and cognitive level. This study aimed to establish the association between leptin levels and delirium in a Colombian elderly population. 115 patients older than 60 years were included. Leptin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay after overnight fasting and Mini-Mental State Examination and Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) tests were employed. Delirium was diagnosed using CAM in 23.48% of patients, being most frequent in men. There were no significant differences in hematology and renal test values between patients with delirium and those without delirium, but cerebrovascular diagnoses were more frequent in patients with delirium. No correlation with any specific medication was found, but patients with delirium had a higher number of comorbidities and medications. Leptin levels were significantly lower in patients with delirium and correlated negatively with the number of diagnoses and medications, but not with age, gender, body mass index, or hematology and renal test results. Leptin levels may have a role in the pathophysiological process of delirium and low leptin could be a useful clinical biomarker to establish risk in elderly patients given the association with delirium.

Abstract
Cholesterol is a core component of the central nervous system, essential for the cell membrane stability and the correct functioning of neurotransmission. It has been observed that cholesterol may be somewhat associated with suicidal behaviours. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to elucidate current facts and views about the role of cholesterol levels in mood disorders. The majority of the studies reviewed in the present paper suggest an interesting relationship between cholesterol (especially lower levels) and suicidality. On the other hand, particularly during the last years, relationships between serum cholesterol and suicidality were doubted on the basis of some recent studies that have not found any correlation. However, the debate on relationships between cholesterol and suicide is open and longitudinal studies on a larger sample of patients are needed to further clarify this important issue.

Abstract
Associations between cholesterol and suicidal behavior in adolescent patients have not been explored in depth. In this study, 66 patients consecutively admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit following attempted suicide were compared with a control group of 54 patients with no history of suicide attempts. The age range of the sample was from 8 to 18 years old. Cholesterol levels were significantly lower in attempted suicide patients than in controls (p < 0.02), supporting the hypothesis that lower cholesterol levels might be associated with suicidal behavior in patients with similar acute phase of their disorder.

Abstract
Unhealthy lipid levels are among the leading controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease. To identify the psychological factors associated with dyslipidemia, this study investigates the personality correlates of cholesterol (total, LDL, and HDL) and triglycerides. A community-based sample (N=5532) from Sardinia, Italy, had their cholesterol and triglyceride levels assessed and completed a comprehensive personality questionnaire, the NEO-PI-R. All analyses controlled for age, sex, BMI, smoking, drinking, hypertension, and diabetes. Low Conscientiousness and traits related to impulsivity were associated with lower HDL cholesterol and higher triglycerides. Compared to the lowest 10%, those who scored in top 10% on Impulsivity had a 2.5 times greater risk of exceeding the clinical threshold for elevated triglycerides (OR=2.51, CI=1.56-4.07). In addition, sex moderated the association between trait depression (a component of Neuroticism) and HDL cholesterol, such that trait depression was associated with lower levels of HDL cholesterol in women but not men. When considering the connection between personality and health, unhealthy lipid profiles may be one intermediate biomarker between personality and morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Earlier studies have linked lipid metabolism to suicide and impulsive-aggressive behaviors. We previously reported that suicide attempters had significantly lower leptin and cholesterol levels than controls. Since lower cholesterol levels have been related to violence alone, we decided to evaluate serum total cholesterol and leptin levels in violent and non-violent suicide attempters. In the present study, 19 violent, 16 non-violent suicide attempters, and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were compared for serum total cholesterol and leptin levels. Violent suicide attempters had significantly lower total cholesterol and leptin levels compared with those with non-violent suicide attempts. Our results suggest that low serum cholesterol and leptin levels are related to the following two dimensions of suicide attempts: suicidality and violence.

Abstract
To examine the importance of ghrelin and leptin in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), we measured serum ghrelin and leptin levels, lipid profile and body mass index (BMI) in 43 patients with OCD and 20 healthy controls. The patients were divided into two subgroups according to whether DSM-IV OCD was accompanied with major depressive disorder (MDD) (OCD+MDD) or not (OCD-MDD). There was no statistically significant difference in ghrelin and leptin levels between groups. The OCD+MDD group had a trend of higher ghrelin levels and lower leptin levels than the OCD-MDD and control groups. There was a negative correlation between change in serum ghrelin and leptin levels only in the OCD+MDD group. Neither ghrelin nor leptin showed any correlation with severity of MDD and OCD. In conclusion, our results suggest that OCD is not associated with leptin or ghrelin levels. More comprehensive and detailed studies are needed to decipher the exact role of ghrelin and leptin in OCD.

Abstract
Low cholesterol levels have commonly been associated with various suicide measures. We sought to examine suicide attempts in a prospective sample of depressed patients that on prior analysis demonstrated an association between low cholesterol and subsequent suicide completions. Seventy-four inpatients with Research Diagnostic Criteria unipolar major depression, bipolar depression or schizoaffective depression entered a prospective follow-up study from 1978 to 1981. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression were utilized to elucidate the relationship between cholesterol levels and subsequent severe suicide attempts as well as all suicide attempts regardless of severity. Attempts preceding index hospitalization and other lifetime attempts were evaluated cross-sectionally. Low serum cholesterol levels did not predict subsequent suicide attempts. Contrary to our hypothesis, the high cholesterol group was associated with increased risk of suicide attempts on survival analysis in those less than median age. Nonetheless, in cross-sectional analysis, the low cholesterol group had more suicide attempts preceding index hospitalization and more remote lifetime attempts. The results from this prospective dataset do not support an association between low cholesterol and subsequent suicide attempts despite replicating the retrospective findings of previous case-control and cross-sectional studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the cross-sectional association between hostility and pulmonary function (PF) and its consistency across race/ethnicity-gender groups. DESIGN Data were from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in (Young) Adults (CARDIA) cohort study (N=4,629). Participants were recruited from 4 metropolitan areas in the United States, ages 18-30 years at baseline in 1985-1986, approximately balanced across race/ethnicity (Black, White) and gender. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Main outcome measures were percent predicted values for forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). RESULTS In full-sample multiple linear regression analyses, each 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in hostility was associated with a 0.66% decrease in FEV-sub-1 (p=.0002) and a 0.60% decrease in FVC (p=.0006). This inverse association of hostility with PF remained after controlling for age, height, current socioeconomic status (SES), participant smoking status, and asthma and is more consistent than that of smoking and PF. In stratified analyses, each 1 SD increase in hostility predicted statistically significant reductions in PF for Black women, White women, and Black men. For White men, hostility showed no statistically significant relation with PF, although the pattern relating hostility to PF was similar to the pattern in the other three groups. Further, both of the post hoc three-way interaction terms for hostility, race/ethnicity, and gender predicting FEV-sub-1 and FVC were nonsignificant. CONCLUSION PF was inversely associated with hostility across race/ethnicity and gender, independent of age, height, current SES, smoking, and asthma. On the basis of these cross-sectional findings, the authors hypothesize that higher hostility will predict a more rapid decline in PF.

Abstract
Atypical antipsychotics (AA)-induced weight gain is associated with increased leptin levels. AA have been increasingly used in the treatment of bipolar disorders. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the association between serum leptin and lipid profiles considering the drug treatments in euthymic bipolar outpatients. Leptin and lipid profiles were compared, and no differences were noted in leptin, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein levels among the patients and controls. Glucose, very-low-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels in patients were higher than in controls, while high-density lipoprotein levels were low. Patients were divided into three groups according to their type of drug usage: AA users, AA + mood stabilizer users, and mood stabilizer users. Each group of patients was compared with a healthy control group for mentioned biochemical parameters. Lipid profiles were disordered by using both AA and mood stabilizers, but higher leptin levels are associated with AA usage. However, leptin does not seem to be responsible for dyslipidemia caused by AA or mood stabilizers in euthymic bipolar patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Appetite, food intake and weight are frequently altered in psychiatric disorders such as major depression and schizophrenia. Leptin is an adipocyte hormone, as the product of the ob gene, regulating food intake and energy balance providing the hypothalamus with information on the amount of body fat. Leptin seems to be strongly associated with lipid metabolism. Moreover, leptin is involved in the control of other behaviors and in brain development. There are few studies about the amounts of plasma leptin in mood disorder and schizophrenia with inconsistent findings. The relationship between leptin and major depressive disorder is still unknown. We planned to investigate the relationship of the serum leptin concentration, cholesterol, and BMI between patients with major depressive disorder, schizophrenic patients and healthy control subjects. METHODS In the present study, the BMI, plasma cholesterol and leptin levels, BDI, and BPRS were compared in 69 patients with major depressive disorder, 78 schizophrenic patients, and 51 healthy controls. RESULTS The major findings of our study included (1) leptin and cholesterol levels were low in patients with major depressive disorder, but high in schizophrenic patients; (2) negative correlations between BDI scores and serum cholesterol or leptin levels in the patients with major depressive disorder; (3) an inconsistently positive correlation between mean leptin levels, cholesterol, and BMI among different groups; (4) positive correlations between serum cholesterol or leptin levels and the length of illness in the schizophrenic patients. CONCLUSIONS In this study, our results indicate that that leptin and cholesterol might play differently important pathophysiological roles in these psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum cholesterol is reported to be associated with suicidality, but studies conducted among general healthy population are rare. We examined the association between serum cholesterol and suicidality in a national sample of the general population of US. METHODS We used the data of 3237 adults aged 17 to 39 years, who completed a mental disorder diagnostic interview and had blood specimens collected after a 12-h fast, as a part of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988-1994. The serum concentrations of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were dichotomized according to the recommended levels of the National Cholesterol Education Program. A polytomous logistic regression was employed to control for covariates. RESULTS Independent of socio-demographic variables, health risks and nutrition status, and a history of medical and psychiatric illness (including depression), a significant association between low HDL-C (< or = 40 mg/dl) and increased prevalence of suicide attempts was observed in women (OR=2.93, 95% CI=1.07-8.00). No significant evidence was found to support an association between cholesterol and suicide ideation in women. Serum cholesterol was unrelated with either suicide ideation or attempts in men. LIMITATION The inherent limitation of cross-sectional design prevented the authors from investigating causality. CONCLUSIONS Low HDL-C is significantly associated with suicide attempts in women. Further studies are necessary to explore the clinical application of serum cholesterol as an indicator for suicide attempts among high risk population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies demonstrate a relationship between lipid metabolism and suicide or impulsive-aggressive behaviours. Leptin seems to be related with lipid metabolism. Therefore, the aim was to measure total serum cholesterol and leptin levels in 16 medication-free schizophrenic patients with and without suicide attempts and in 16 healthy controls. METHOD Subjects were assessed by using Impulsivity Rating (IRS) and Modified Overt Aggression Scale (MOAS). RESULTS The patients had lower total cholesterol and leptin levels in serum compared with the controls. Significantly lower total cholesterol and leptin levels were observed in patients who had attempted suicide compared with those who had not. The levels were observed to be low in violent attempters when compared with non-violent attempters. MOAS and IRS scores were negatively correlated with both cholesterol or leptin levels in patients. CONCLUSION The results indicated that medication-free schizophrenic patients have statistically significant lower serum cholesterol and leptin levels compared with controls and the difference is obvious in suicide attempters compared with non-suicide attempters and in violent attempters than non-violent attempters.

Abstract
Because manganese (Mn) is potentially toxic, and because dietary fat type may affect Mn absorption, the objectives of the current study were to determine whether diets containing very low or very high amounts of Mn and enriched in either saturated or unsaturated fats affected measures of neuropsychological and basic metabolic function. Healthy young women were fed for 8 wk each, in a crossover design, diets that provided 0.8 or 20 mg of Mn/d. One half of the subjects received 15% of energy as cocoa butter, and one half received 15% of energy as corn oil. A meal containing (54)Mn was fed after 4 wk, and subjects underwent whole-body counting for the next 21 d. Blood draws and neuropsychological tests were administered at regular intervals during the dietary periods. When subjects consumed the diets low in Mn, compared with the high Mn diets, they absorbed a significantly higher percentage of (54)Mn, but had a significantly longer biological half-life of the absorbed (54)Mn. Manganese intake did not affect any neurological measures and only minimally affected psychologic variables. These data show that efficient mechanisms operate to maintain Mn homeostasis over the range of intakes that may be encountered in a mixed Western diet. Thus, dietary intakes of Mn from 0.8 to 20 mg for 8 wk likely do not result in Mn deficiency or toxicity signs in healthy adults.

Abstract
It has been reported that nizatidine may reduce the weight gain in schizophrenic patients receiving olanzapine treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated a relation between olanzapine-induced weight gain and serum leptin levels. Therefore, in the present study, it was planned to investigate the efficacy of nizatidine on the treatment of olanzapine-induced weight gain, and if available, whether leptin levels were associated with reductions in weight gain. Of the patients with schizophrenia on olanzapine treatment, 59 who gave informed consent entered a 3 month open-label screening period. Of them, 35 patients (59%) showed weight gain in excess of 2.5 kg. These patients were randomly divided into two groups; olanzapine plus nizatidine (group I) and olanzapine plus placebo (group II) for an 8-week double-blind phase. The patients were evaluated at the baseline and at week 8 with respect to the positive and negative syndrome scale, body mass index, weight and serum leptin levels. In the open-label period, olanzapine led to a considerable marked increase in weight and in serum leptin levels. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups with respect to weight at the beginning of the 8-week double-blind treatment period. Throughout the 8 week double-blind period, in group I, the weight decreased by 4.5 +/- 2.2 kg ( p<0.05). In contrast, weight increased in group II by a mean of 2.3 +/- 0.9 kg ( p>0.05). The leptin levels decreased by 4.4 +/- 2.3 ng/ml in group I ( p<0.01), and increased by 1.8 +/- 0.6 ng/ml in group II ( p>0.05). These changes were accompanied by changes in the leptin levels in both groups I and II. It is concluded that leptin seems to be strongly associated with olanzapine-induced weight gain and that nizatidine treatment may reduce the weight gain and the correlated leptin levels in patients with schizophrenia on olanzapine treatment.

Abstract
Low cholesterol levels have been reported in patients with manic episodes. Leptin seems to be strongly associated with lipid metabolism. In the present study, therefore, serum total cholesterol and leptin levels were compared in 16 patients with manic episodes, 16 with bipolar I disorder in full remission and 16 healthy controls. The serum total cholesterol and leptin levels were measured and Young Mania Rating (YMRS) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scales (HAM-D) were administered for each subject. Both the patients with manic episodes and the patients with bipolar I disorder in full remission had markedly low serum cholesterol and leptin levels compared with controls, though the difference was more obvious in patients with manic episodes. In addition, there were negative correlations between YMRS scores and serum cholesterol or leptin levels in the patients with manic episodes. Our results suggest that the patients with manic episodes and those with bipolar I disorder in full remission seem to be associated with decreased serum cholesterol and leptin levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate serum leptin levels (an adipocyte hormone involved in the suppression of appetite) in patients with premature ejaculation before and after treatment with citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, with the hypothesis that leptin levels might become normal during this treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS The inhibitory effect of serotonin on libido, ejaculation and orgasm is well documented. Although there is no direct evidence of an association involving brain pathways which are related to sexual behaviour, there is an interaction between leptinergic and serotonergic systems. In a previous study serum leptin levels were high in patients with premature ejaculation. The present study comprised 30 patients with premature ejaculation according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Third Revised Version. Fifteen patients (group I) were randomly assigned to 8 weeks of citalopram treatment and the remainder (15, group II) received no therapy. The patients were asked to determine the average intravaginal ejaculation latency time, and their fasting serum leptin levels were measured at baseline and after 8 weeks. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the mean intravaginal ejaculation latency time between the groups at baseline; it increased after 8 weeks of treatment with citalopram in group I, to a mean (sd) of 209 (72.1) s, but not in group II. No difference was detected in leptin levels between the groups at baseline, but at 8 weeks they were lower in group I. CONCLUSION As hypothesized, leptin levels decreased in patients with premature ejaculation after treatment with citalopram, and this decrease seemed to be linked to the therapeutic effect. Further experimental studies are needed.
