Abstract
Background Addressing patients' perceptions of the causes of their overweight and obesity may be a promising approach to enhance treatment motivation and success. Previous research suggests that there are gender differences in these aspects. The objective of this study was to investigate gender differences in causal attributions among individuals with overweight and obesity who participated in a cognitive-behavioral mobile health (mHealth) intervention. Method Causal attributions were assessed using the revised Illness Perceptions Questionnaire, which included a rated and open answering section. An ANCOVA was conducted for each causal factor (behavioral, psychological, risk, external) as a dependent variable to determine gender differences, which were analysed with chi-squared tests for open-ended responses. Results The most frequently mentioned and highly rated cause was behavior for both genders (59.8% of 639 responses). The results indicated that women rated psychological causes, particularly stress-related causes, significantly higher, F(1,211) = 14.88, p < .001, η2 = .07, and were more likely to cite emotional eating than men, χ2(1, N = 639) = 15.06, p < .001. Men rated alcohol stronger as cause than women, t(125.05) = 3.79, p < .001. Conclusion The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the gender differences in causal attributions among individuals with overweight or obesity. Implementing stress management interventions with a focus on emotion regulation is pivotal, especially for females. Interventions should focus on sensitizing males to the association between emotions and eating behavior. The causal attributions should be assessed with different survey methods in order to match the patient's view of their condition.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to determine the comparative treatment effects of semaglutide 2.4 mg and placebo on health utility index scores [6-dimension short-form survey (SF-6D)] with Australian weights in full analysis set (FAS) and in post-hoc subgroups of the STEP 1 trial, defined according to different body mass index (BMI) cut-off points and presence of comorbidities at baseline. The study also explored the correlation between baseline BMI and SF-6D in the STEP 1 trial population. METHODS The 36-item SF survey (SF-36) scores from STEP 1 were mapped to SF-6D health states and converted to utility index scores using an Australian valuation algorithm. The change from baseline in SF-6D utility score (95% confidence intervals) was compared between semaglutide 2.4 mg and placebo at week 68 using the mixed model for repeated measurements approach. The relationship between utility scores and BMI at baseline was assessed by multiple linear regression analyses, controlling for demographic and clinical parameters. RESULTS The estimated mean treatment difference in SF-6D utility score favoured semaglutide 2.4 mg, and, at week 68, it was 0.057 (0.038-0.076) for the FAS. A greater treatment effect was noted in subgroups with presence of symptomatic comorbidities, i.e. 0.077 (0.027-0.128) to 0.105 (0.030-0.179) at week 68. A 1-unit increase in BMI was associated with a utility loss of 0.0075 (-0.0089 to -0.0062) for the FAS population, while controlling for demographic and clinical parameters. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the first study showing statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in SF-6D utility scores with weight-loss pharmacotherapy in Australia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adult height is associated with the risk of stroke. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We explored the mediating role of metabolic factors in the association between adult height and stroke incidence. METHODS We used data from 3306 community-dwelling participants with complete information on adult height, metabolic factors, and 25-year cardiovascular outcomes. Participants were classified into three adult height groups based on sex-specific height quartiles: short (Q1), average (Q2-Q3), and tall (Q4). The primary endpoint was the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease and stroke. RESULTS Taller adult height was associated with a lower risk of stroke. Compared with the short group the risk of stroke reduced with taller height with a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.68 in the average group (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.50-0.93), and 0.45 in the tall group (95% CI: 0.31-0.65). Low systolic blood pressure was considered as a protective mediator in the effect of adult height on the risk of stroke in the average (HR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.82-0.93) and the tall group (HR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.78-0.91). Systolic blood pressure significantly contributed to height-related stroke risk (proportion mediated: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.19-1.56). CONCLUSIONS This study found an inverse association between adult height and stroke risk, which is partly driven by lower systolic blood pressure. These findings highlight the importance of systolic blood pressure management as a potential preventive strategy against stroke.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we discuss contemporary and emerging approaches for risk stratification and management of excess adiposity for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. RECENT FINDINGS Obesity is simultaneously a pandemic-scale disease and major risk factor for the incidence and progression of a wide range of cardiometabolic conditions, but risk stratification and treatment remain clinically challenging. However, sex-, race-, and ethnicity-sensitive anthropometric measures, body composition-focused imaging, and health burden-centric staging systems have emerged as important facilitators of holistic risk prediction. Further, expanding therapeutic approaches, including comprehensive lifestyle programs, anti-obesity pharmacotherapies, device/endoscopy-based interventions, metabolic surgery, and novel healthcare delivery resources offer new empowerment for cardiovascular risk reduction in individuals with obesity. Personalized risk stratification and weight management are central to reducing the lifetime prevalence and impact of cardiovascular disease. Further evidence informing long-term safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of novel approaches targeting obesity are critically needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although obesity is an important risk factor for cancer incidence, the effect of body mass index (BMI) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after cancer treatment remains unknown. This population-based cross-sectional study assessed different levels of BMI as an important factor associated with impaired HRQoL in long-term cancer survivors. METHODS The study enrolled 1104 cancer survivors from the fourth to seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES 2007-2018) who were alive at least 5 years after their cancer diagnoses. The BMI was classified into four categories: < 20 (underweight), 20-22.9 (healthy weight), 23-24.9 (overweight), and ≥ 25 kg/m2 (obese). Impaired HRQoL was defined as the lowest quartile of European Quality of Life 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire scores. RESULTS Cancer survivors who were underweight or obese were more likely to report health problems on each dimension of the EQ-5D compared to the other BMI groups. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the two extreme BMI categories were significantly associated with impaired HRQoL (BMI < 20 kg/m2: odds ratio [OR] = 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.08-2.86; BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2: OR = 2.14, 95% CI = 1.41-3.25; P trend = 0.049), especially in the gastrointestinal cancer group (P heterogeneity = 0.007). Moreover, the association between underweight/obese and impaired HRQoL showed a significant sex difference (P heterogeneity = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that deviations from normal BMI, such as being underweight or obese, are negatively associated with HRQoL in long-term cancer survivors; to some extent, this may depend on cancer type and sex. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Reaching or maintaining a healthy weight should be emphasized for cancer survivors as a long-term goal even after cancer treatment.

Abstract
Introduction This study aims to explore the risk factors associated with suicidal behavior and establish predictive models in female patients with mood disorders, specifically using a nomogram of the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 396 female individuals diagnosed with mood disorders (F30-F39) according to the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10). The study utilized the Chi-Squared Test, t-test, and the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test to assess differences in demographic information and clinical characteristics between the two groups. Logistic LASSO Regression Analyses were utilized to identify the risk factors associated with suicidal behavior. A nomogram was constructed to develop a prediction model. The accuracy of the prediction model was evaluated using a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. Result The LASSO regression analysis showed that psychotic symptoms at first-episode (β = 0.27), social dysfunction (β = 1.82), and somatic disease (β = 1.03) increased the risk of suicidal behavior. Conversely, BMI (β = -0.03), age of onset (β = -0.02), polarity at onset (β = -1.21), and number of hospitalizations (β = -0.18) decreased the risk of suicidal behavior. The area under ROC curve (AUC) of the nomogram predicting SB was 0.778 (95%CI: 0.730-0.827, p < 0.001). Conclusion The nomogram based on demographic and clinical characteristics can predict suicidal behavior risk in Chinese female patients with mood disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicide is a leading cause of death in South Korea (hereafter 'Korea'), and there is evidence that body weight and perceived weight affecting suicide have a significant effect on suicidal behavior in adolescence. This study investigated the association between body mass index (BMI), perceived weight, and suicide attempts in adolescents. METHODS We included nationally representative data for a total of 106,320 students in our final analysis. We calculated and stratified BMI (underweight, normal weight, overweight) to determine the correlation between BMI and suicide attempts. We stratified the participants into three groups (perceived as underweight, normal weight, and overweight) for subjective body weight perception to analyze the relationship between subjective body weight perception and suicide attempts. We further analyzed the combination of BMI and subjective body weight perception to determine the relationship between suicide attempts and distorted subjective weight perception. RESULTS Compared with perceiving oneself as having a normal weight, the odds ratios (ORs) for suicide attempts were significantly increased in the group perceiving themselves as overweight. In addition, those who perceived themselves as overweight but were underweight according to their BMI were at significantly increased risk of suicide attempts relative to those who perceived themselves as about the right weight. CONCLUSIONS There was a significant association with suicide attempts in the underweight and perceived overweight group. This shows the importance of combining BMI and perceived weight when examining the relationship between weight and suicide attempts in adolescents.

Abstract
Impaired cognition is the primary symptom of dementia, which can lead to functional disability and reduced quality of life among an increasingly ageing population. Ageing is associated with increased oxidative stress, chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction, which reduces cerebrovascular function leading to cognitive decline. Chronic low-grade systemic inflammatory conditions, such as obesity, exacerbate this decline beyond normal ageing and predispose individuals to neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia. Capsaicin, the major pungent molecule of chilli, has recently demonstrated improvements in cognition in animal models via activation of the transient receptor potential vanilloid channel 1 (TRPV1). Capsaicin-induced TRPV1 activation reduces adiposity, chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress, as well as improves endothelial function, all of which are associated with cerebrovascular function and cognition. This review examines the current literature on capsaicin and Capsimax, a capsaicin supplement associated with reduced gastrointestinal irritation compared to capsaicin. Acute and chronic capsaicin treatment can improve cognition in animals. However, studies adequately assessing the effects of capsaicin on cerebrovascular function, and cognition in humans do not exist. Capsimax may be a potentially safe therapeutic intervention for future clinical trials testing the effects of capsaicin on cerebrovascular function and cognition.

Abstract
Introduction Retirement has been shown to impact individual health as an important life course, and we examined the impact of retirement on the prevalence of obesity in women based on a female perspective. Methods We use data from the five waves of the China Family Panel Study (CFPS) data from 2010 to 2018, with the body mass index (BMI) as the obesity measure. Fuzzy regression discontinuity design (FRDD) is used to overcome the endogeneity of retirement behavior and obesity. Results After retirement, the obesity rate among women increased 23.8%-27.4% (p < 0.05). The mechanism is that the activity consumption has not changed significantly, but the energy intake has increased significantly. In addition, we found that the effect of retirement on female obesity was strong heterogeneity. Conclusions The study found that retirement will increase the probability of obesity in women.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the impact of weight loss on sexual and psychological health as well as quality of life in females with sexual dysfunction. Materials and methods The study was done at Delta University for Science and Technology in Gamasa, Egypt, on 40 obese married females having sexual dysfunction. Their age ranged from 20 to 40 years old, with a mean of 28.98 ± 4.96 years. They followed a weight loss program in the form of diet regimen and physical training for 6 months. Anthropometric measures, Arabic Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Arabic version of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Arabic version of Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) were evaluated prior to starting the study, after 3 and 6 months of the study. Results Statistical analysis revealed significant reductions in anthropometric measures, as well as significant improvements in HADS and SF-36 scores after both 3 and 6 months of weight loss intervention compared to the baseline measurements, while there were significant improvements in sexual arousal, lubrication, patient satisfaction as well as the total score of FSFI after 3 months and contrarily there were no statistically significant changes in any of the FSFI's domains or overall score after 6 months of the weight loss program compared to baseline. Conclusion Weight loss improves females' anthropometric measures, psychological function and quality of life; however, it has no direct effect on female sexual dysfunction (FSD) after 6 months compared to baseline, so increased awareness of FSD is necessary as this issue suffers from inadequate identification and management.

Abstract
Background: Psychophysical factors may have an impact on the disease of obesity, and it is important to explore which aspects may play an important role on the well-being of obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The purpose of this study was to assess the associations of a high body mass index (BMI) and greater dissatisfaction with body image with higher levels of psychopathological aspects, feelings of hopelessness, and psychological and physical health in patients undergoing evaluation for bariatric surgery. Methods: Fifty-nine patients undergoing bariatric surgery filled out the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, the Body Uneasiness Test, the 12-item Short Form Survey, the Beck Inventory Scale II, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale. Correlations and hierarchical regressions between measures were performed. Results: Dissatisfaction with the perception of one’s own body image was strongly correlated with a worse psychophysiological health. On the contrary, BMI showed no significant correlation with the previous variables. Furthermore, the perception of one’s own body image significantly predicted the state of psychological health. Conclusions: The findings showed a more relevant role of body image compared to the BMI in the association with psychological outcomes, suggesting the importance of considering body image in the assessment and treatment of obese patients requiring bariatric treatment.

Abstract
Background The magnitude and impact of women's suicidal behaviors, like suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts, are an important public health problem in low and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. Suicidal behavior and being overweight are typical complications of reproductive age with many undesired consequences. Despite both having a serious impact on women of reproductive age, they are neglected in Ethiopia. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the magnitude and determinants of suicide among overweight reproductive-age women in Chacha and Debre Berhan towns, Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study design was once employed from April 1, 2020 to June 1, 2020. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to measure suicidal attempts and ideation, and the data was collected by direct interview. All collected data were entered into Epi Data version 4.6 and analyzed with SPSS version 25. Bivariate and multivariable regression models were used to determine the factors associated with a suicidal attempt and ideation. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result Of the total participants, 523 were included, with a response rate of 93.7%. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 13.0% (95% CI 10.1–15.9), whereas suicidal attempt was 2.3% (95% CI 1.1–3.6). Based on multivariable regression analysis, the odds of suicidal ideation have been higher among overweight women with stressful life events, depression, and younger age groups. Conclusion Suicidal ideation was frequent in overweight reproductive-age women. Preventing, treating, and using coping mechanisms regarding identified factors is a good way to minimize the burden of suicide.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of morbid obesity and multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Data for this study were sourced from three waves (waves 9, 13 and 17) of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey. The paper analyses 37,887 person-year observations from 19,387 individuals during the period 2009-2017. The longitudinal random-effects Tobit model was fitted to examine the association between morbid obesity, MLTCs and HRQoL. This study found that morbid obesity and MLTCs were both negatively associated with HRQoL as measured through physical component summary (PCS), mental component summary (MCS), and the short-form six-dimension utility index (SF-6D) of the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Morbidly obese scored lower points on the PCS (β = -5.05, 95% CI: -5.73, -4.37), MCS (β = -1.03, 95% CI: -1.84, -0.23), and in the SF-6D utility index (β = -0.045, 95% CI: -0.054, -0.036) compared to their healthy weight counterparts. Similar findings were observed for individuals with MLTCs, with lower scores for the PCS (β = -4.79, 95% CI: -5.20, -4.38), MCS (β = -4.95, 95% CI: -5.43, -4.48), and SF-6D utility (β = -0.071, 95% CI: -0.076, -0.066). Additionally, multiplicative interaction between morbid obesity and MLTCs was observed to modestly exacerbated the negative effect of morbid obesity on PCS scores (β = -1.69, 95% CI: -2.74, -0.64). The interaction effect, on the other hand, significantly lessen the unfavourable effect of morbid obesity on the MCS score (β = 1.34, 95% CI: 0.10, 2.58). The findings of this study will be useful for future cost-effectiveness analyses and measuring the burden of diseases since it provides information on the disutility associated with morbid obesity and MLTCs.

Abstract
Background: Obesity is a condition that affects humans both physically and mentally. Moreover, many psychopathological conditions can be observed in obese patients that may threaten the positive outcomes of bariatric surgery. Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the main psychopathological correlates of obese candidates for bariatric surgery, with particular attention on the relationship between psychopathology and gender. Methods: In total, 273 candidates for bariatric surgery for obesity underwent a psychiatric evaluation using a compilation of psychometric scales: the Revised Symptom Checklist 90-R (SCL-90-R), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), the Binge Eating Scale (BES), the Body Uneasiness Test (BUT) and the Obesity-Related Well-Being (ORWELL 97). The sample was divided on the basis of gender and binge eating disorder (BED) severity. Comparisons between the groups were performed using an analysis of variance model (ANOVA) or a Pearson’s chi-squared test. Further, we also divided our sample into a severe binge eating group (score > 27), a mild to moderate group (18 < score < 26) and a low/no symptoms group (score < 17). Results: Male and female subjects showed different results for the BES, with higher scores reported among women (17.50 ± 9.59) compared to men (14.08 ± 8.64). Women also showed higher scores across most of the SCL-90-R domains and worse outcomes in terms of quality of life. Both women and men in the severe binge eating group reported higher scores for the SCL-90-R. Conclusion: The symptoms of BED, along with body image dissatisfaction (BID), are among the most important to investigate for candidates for bariatric surgery in order to improve the surgery outcomes. Level of evidence: Level III as the evidence came from a cohort analytic study.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to test if a low-calorie diet plus interval exercise (LCD+INT) reduced oxidized and non-oxidized phospholipids in relation to improved weight-related quality of life (QoL) to a greater extent than an energy-deficit matched LCD in obese females. Subjects (age: 47.2 ± 2.6 years, body mass index: 37.5 ± 1.3 kg/m2) were randomized to a 13-day LCD (n = 12; mixed meals of ∼1200 kcal/day) or LCD+INT (n = 13; 12 sessions of 60 min/day alternating 3 min at 50% and 90% peak heart rate plus an additional 350 kcal shake fed after exercise to match energy availability between groups). Weight-related QoL (Laval Questionnaire) as well as oxidized (POVPC, HOOA-PC, HPETE-PC, HETE-PC, PEIPC, KOOA-PC) and non-oxidized (PAPC and lysoPC) phospholipids were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Fitness (VO2peak), body composition (BodPod), and clinical bloods were also tested. LCD+INT significantly increased VO2peak (mL/kg/min, P = 0.03) compared to LCD despite similar fat loss, blood glucose, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory responses. LCD+INT had significantly greater increases in QoL sexual life domain (P = 0.05) and tended to have a greater increase in the emotions domain (P = 0.09) and total score (P = 0.10) compared to LCD. There were no significant differences between treatments for changes in phospholipids despite LCD+INT increasing measured oxidized and non-oxidized phospholipids while LCD decreased POVPC, HOOA-PC, and PEIPC as well as non-oxidized PAPC and lysoPC. Interestingly, the rise in PEIPC correlated with elevated VO2peak (mL/kg/min r = 0.42, P = 0.05). Decreased caloric intake was, however, linked to a decrease in PAPC (r = 0.53, P = 0.01), lysoPC (r = 0.52, P = 0.02), POVPC (r = 0.43, P = 0.05), and HPETE-PC (r = 0.43, P = 0.05). The decrease in HETE-PC also correlated with increases in the QoL domains symptoms (r = -0.46, P = 0.04), hygiene/clothing (r = -0.53, P = 0.01), emotions (r = -0.53, P = 0.01), social interactions (r = -0.49, P = 0.02), and total score (r = -0.52, P = 0.02). In conclusion, although LCD and LCD+INT improved weight related QoL over 13 days in females with obesity, LCD+INT tended to improve sexual life, emotions as well as total QoL score more than LCD. These data suggest caloric restriction and fitness may act through different mechanisms to support QoL.

BackgroundPatient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL). These tools can facilitate assessment of weight-related successes and challenges.ObjectiveImplement surveys to better understand individual experiences with obesity and explore factors that may be associated with HRQOL.MethodsPatients completed Obesity and Weight Loss Quality of Life Instrument (OWLQOL) and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Global-10 surveys. Three scores were calculated from survey results: global physical health (GPH), global mental health (GMH), and OWLQOL. The association between these scores and body mass index (BMI) was examined using multiple linear regression analyses.Results114 surveys were analyzed. GPH and OWLQOL scores were negatively associated with BMI. OWLQOL scores were higher in those who lost more than 10% body weight compared to those who lost less weight. OWLQOL scores for return patients were significantly higher than those for new patients.ConclusionsVarious factors may affect HRQOL. Higher BMI may adversely affect HRQOL, but weight loss greater than 10% and an ongoing clinical relationship may have a positive effect.Implications for NursingThese surveys can promote quality care, providing relevant information to enhance the clinical visit and offering another means to evaluate interventions over time.

Abstract
Obesity negatively impacts patients' health-related quality of life (QOL) and is associated with a range of complications such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease, and sleep apnea, alongside decreased physical function, mobility, and control of eating. The Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with obesity (STEP) trials compared once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg with placebo in adults with overweight or obesity, with or without T2D. This article reviews the effects of semaglutide 2.4 mg on QOL, control of eating, and body composition. Weight-related QOL was assessed using the Impact of Weight on Quality of Life-Lite Clinical Trials Version (IWQOL-Lite-CT), and health-related QOL was assessed with the 36-item Short Form Health Survey version 2 (SF-36v2®). Control of eating was evaluated using the Control of Eating questionnaire in a subgroup of participants in one trial. Body composition was evaluated via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in another trial, in a subgroup of participants with a body mass index of ≤40 kg/m2. All IWQOL-Lite-CT scores (Physical Function, Physical, Psychosocial, and Total Score) improved with semaglutide 2.4 mg significantly more than with placebo. Across the trials, changes in SF-36v2 scores were generally in favor of semaglutide versus placebo. There were significant improvements in all Control of Eating questionnaire domains (craving control, craving for savory, craving for sweet, and positive mood) up to week 52 with semaglutide treatment versus placebo, with improvements in craving control and craving for savory remaining significantly different at week 104. Body composition findings showed that reductions in total fat mass were greater with semaglutide versus placebo. These findings highlight the wider benefits that patients can experience with once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg, in addition to weight loss, including improvements in patients' wellbeing and ability to perform daily activities. Taken together, these are important considerations for primary care when incorporating pharmacotherapy for weight management.

Abstract
Obesity is classified as a chronic disease. Women and men seem to face different obstacles in their attempts to overcome one of the most challenging tasks in the treatment of this disease, namely, weight reduction maintenance. The Common-Sense-Model (CSM) is mainly used to improve the understanding of self-regulation and health behaviour in chronic diseases but has yet to be explored for obesity. This paper applies the CSM to obesity, focussing on the construct of illness representations, which is the basis of health behaviour according to the CSM. A sample of n = 356 women and n = 77 men with obesity was investigated to assess the extent that illness representations in obesity are shaped by experiences of weight-cycling and the extent that gender influences their quality. Our results show that the representations of timeline and consequences as well as the emotional representation are particularly influenced by weight-cycling, especially in men. On average, women showed more maladaptive illness representations than men. These findings not only contribute to a better applicability of the CSM in obesity, but also emphasize the importance of gender in obesity research and interventions.

Abstract
Clinical studies have reported an increased risk of depression and anxiety disorders among individuals who are obese, and women are more likely than men to suffer from depression, anxiety, and obesity. However, the effects of obesity-promoting diets on depression- and anxiety-like behavior remain controversial. A recent study from our group used the tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (R439H) knock-in mouse line to evaluate the impact of genetic brain serotonin (5-HT) deficiency on behavioral responses to high fat diet (HFD) in male mice. That study indicated that chronic exposure to HFD induced pro-anxiety-like effects in the open field test and antidepressant-like effects in the forced swim test in wild-type males. Interestingly, the antidepressant-like effect of HFD, but not the anxiogenic effect, was blocked by brain 5-HT deficiency in males. The current work sought to repeat these studies in females. Our new data suggest that females are less susceptible than males to HFD-induced weight gain and HFD-induced alterations in behavior. In addition, the effects of chronic HFD on the expression of inflammation-related genes in the hippocampus were markedly different in females than we had previously reported in males, and HFD was shown to impact the expression of several inflammation-related genes in a genotype-dependent manner. Together, our findings highlight the importance of brain 5-HT and sex in regulating behavioral and molecular responses to HFD. Our results may have important implications for our understanding of the clinically observed sex differences in the consequences of obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of health state utility decrements associated with overweight and obesity in adults 18 years and over, for use in modelled economic evaluations in Australia. METHODS A systematic review was conducted in nine databases to identify studies that reported health state utility values by weight status. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to synthesise average utility decrements (from healthy weight) associated with overweight, all obesity and obesity classes 1, 2 and 3. Heterogeneity surrounding utility decrements was assessed via sub-group analysis, random-effects meta-regression and sensitivity analyses. RESULTS Twelve studies were found for which data were used to synthesise utility decrements, estimated as overweight = 0.020 (95% confidence interval 0.010-0.030), all obesity = 0.055 (0.034-0.076), obesity class 1 = 0.047 (0.017-0.077), class 2 = 0.072 (0.028-0.116) and class 3 = 0.084 (0.039-0.130). There was considerable heterogeneity in our results, which could be accounted for by the different ages and utility instruments used in the contributing studies. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that elevated weight status is associated with small but statistically significant reductions in utility compared with healthy weight, which will result in reduced quality-adjusted life years when extrapolated across time and used in economic evaluations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In adults, pain is prospectively associated with overweight/obesity and concurrently associated with dysregulated eating, with evidence for stronger associations in women than men. This study aimed to evaluate whether similar associations among pain response, BMI, and loss of control (LOC) eating are also evident in adolescent girls. METHOD Girls (n = 202) completed the cold pressor test (CPT) at age 10, and BMI and LOC eating were assessed annually from ages 10-16 years. Generalized linear models were used to test associations between pain tolerance (total immersion time) and threshold (latency to highest pain rating), and changes in BMI and LOC eating. RESULTS Lower pain tolerance and threshold at age 10 were associated with increases in LOC eating from age 10 to 16 (tolerance: B < -.01, SE < .01, p = .005; threshold: B = -.03, SE = .01, p = .0118). No significant associations were observed between pain tolerance/threshold and increasing BMI. DISCUSSION Pain responsivity in childhood is associated with increases in dysregulated eating from childhood to adolescence. These findings provide support for the early development of an interface between pain and eating behaviors.

Abstract
The prevalence of asthma has nearly doubled over the last decades. Twentieth century changes in environmental and lifestyle factors, including changes in dietary habits, physical activity and the obesity epidemic, have been suggested to play a role in the increase of asthma prevalence and uncontrolled asthma worldwide. A large body of evidence has suggested that obesity is a likely risk factor for asthma, but mechanisms are still unclear. Regarding diet and physical activity, the literature remains inconclusive. Although the investigation of nutritional factors as a whole (i.e., the “diet, physical activity and body composition” triad) is highly relevant in terms of understanding underlying mechanisms, as well as designing effective public health interventions, their combined effects across the life course has not received a lot of attention. In this review, we discuss the state of the art regarding the role of nutritional factors in asthma, for each window of exposure. We focus on the methodological and conceptual challenges encountered in the investigation of the complex time-dependent interrelations between nutritional factors and asthma and its control, and their interaction with other determinants of asthma. Lastly, we provide guidance on how to address these challenges, as well as suggestions for future research.

Background
The rate of occurrence of psychiatric morbidities like anxiety, depression, perceived stress, and the overall quality of life are very high among female patients with obesity; therefore, our study investigates such variables before and after weight loss in female patients on diet restriction; this can help obesity-multidisciplinary teams target these psychiatric correlates to reach a more satisfactory outcome.
Results
Anxiety, depression, and perceived stress scores decreased significantly in parallel to the weight loss reported (p < 0.0001). Except for social functioning, all other domains of quality of life improved significantly after weight loss. Those with higher education level showed significantly lower stress, anxiety, and depression scores before weight loss compared to married and highly educated ones respectively. After weight loss, highly educated participants showed lower perceived stress and depression scores than those with middle education.
Conclusions
Anxiety, depression, and perceived stress factors are significantly decreased after weight reduction with an improved quality of life as well compared to their scores prior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking and obesity are 2 modifiable risk factors for disability. We examine the impact of smoking and obesity on disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) at older ages, using 2 levels of disability. METHOD We used the DYNOPTA dataset, derived by harmonizing and pooling risk factors and disability outcomes from 5 Australian longitudinal aging studies. We defined mobility disability as inability to walk 1 km, and more severe (activities of daily living [ADL]) disability by the inability to dress or bathe. Mortality data for the analytic sample (N = 20 401; 81.2% women) were obtained from Government Records via data linkage. We estimated sex-specific total life expectancy, DFLE, and years spent with disability by Interpolated Markov Chain (IMaCh) software for each combination of smoking (never vs ever), obesity (body mass index ≥30 vs 18.5 to <30), and education (left school age 14 or younger vs age 15 or older). RESULTS Compared to those without either risk factor, high educated nonobese smokers at age 65 lived shorter lives (men and women: 2.5 years) and fewer years free of mobility disability (men: 2.1 years; women: 2.0 years), with similar results for ADL disability. Obesity had the largest effect on mobility disability in women; high educated obese nonsmoking women lived 1.3 years less than nonsmoking, not obese women but had 5.1 years fewer free of mobility disability and 3.2 fewer free of ADL disability. Differences between risk factor groups were similar for the low educated. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest eliminating obesity would lead to an absolute reduction of disability, particularly in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In some European countries, including France, older patients with functional decline in acute units are transferred to geriatric rehabilitation units. Some patients may not benefit from their stay in a geriatric rehabilitation unit and paradoxically worsened their functional status. Previous prognostic models of functional decline are based on only baseline parameters. However, some events can occur during rehabilitation and modify the association between baseline parameters and rehabilitation performance such as heart failure episode, falls or hospital-acquired infection (HAI). The incidence of functional decline in these units and factors associated with this decline have not been clearly identified. METHODS We used a prospective cohort of consecutive patients aged ≥75 years admitted to a geriatric rehabilitation unit in a French university hospital. The main endpoint was functional decline defined by at least an one-point decrease in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) score during the stay. Baseline social and geriatric characteristics were recorded and comorbidities were sought by the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRS-G). During follow-up, hospital-acquired infection (HAI) was recorded, as was ADL score at discharge. Multivariate logistic regression and mediation analyses were used to identify factors associated with ADL decrease. RESULTS Among the 252 eligible patients, 160 (median age 84 years [interquartile range (IQR) 80-88] had available ADL scores at baseline (median score 7 [IQR 4-10]) and at discharge (median 9 [6-12]). Median CIRS-G score was 11 [8-13], 23 (14%) had a pulmonary HAI; 28 (17.5%) showed functional decline. On multivariable analysis, functional decline was associated with comorbidities (global CIRS-G score, P = 0.02, CIRS-G for respiratory disease [CIRS-G-R] ≥2, P = 0.02, or psychiatric disease, P = 0.02) and albumin level < 35 g/l (p = 0.03). Significant associations were found between functional decline and CIRS-G-R (OR 3.07 [95%CI 1.27-7.41], p = 0.01), between functional decline and pulmonary HAI (OR 3.12 [1.17-8.32],p = 0.02), and between CIRS-G-R and pulmonary HAI (OR 12.9[4.4-37.7], p = 0.0001). Theses associations and the reduced effect of CIRS-G-R on functional decline after adjusting for pulmonary HAI (OR 2.26 [0.83-6.16], p = 0.11) suggested partial mediation of pulmonary HAI in the relation between CIRS-G-R and functional decline. CONCLUSION Baseline comorbidities were independently associated with functional decline in patients hospitalized in a geriatric rehabilitation unit. Pulmonary HAI may have mediated this association. We need to better identify patients at risk of functional decline before transfer to a rehabilitation unit and to test the implementation of modern and individual programs of rehabilitation outside the hospital for these patients.

Abstract
Rich streams of continuous data are available through Smart Sensors representing a unique opportunity to develop and analyse risk models in healthcare and extract knowledge from data. There is a niche for developing new algorithms, and visualisation and decision support tools to assist health professionals in chronic disease management incorporating data generated through smart sensors in a more precise and personalised manner. However, current understanding of risk models relies on static snapshots of health variables or measures, rather than ongoing and dynamic feedback loops of behaviour, considering changes and different states of patients and diseases. The rationale of this work is to introduce a new method for discovering dynamic risk models for chronic diseases, based on patients' dynamic behaviour provided by health sensors, using Process Mining techniques. Results show the viability of this method, three dynamic models have been discovered for the chronic diseases hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, based on the dynamic behaviour of metabolic risk factors associated. This information would support health professionals to translate a one-fits-all current approach to treatments and care, to a personalised medicine strategy, that fits treatments built on patients' unique behaviour thanks to dynamic risk modelling taking advantage of the amount data generated by smart sensors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Against a backdrop of population aging and improving survival rates for chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCD), researchers are placing growing emphasis on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study was to identify the QoL assessment instruments used in population-based studies with adults conducted around the world. METHODS A systematic review of original research published in all languages between 2008 and 2018 was conducted. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses were excluded. RESULTS Sixty-three articles (38.1% conducted in the Americas) fitted the eligibility criteria. Based on the AHRQ checklist for cross-sectional studies and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale for cohort studies, methodological quality was shown to be fair in the majority of studies (55.6%) and good in 44.4%. The country with the highest number of publications was Brazil (20.6%). Twelve types of generic instruments and 11 specific instruments were identified. The generic instrument SF-36 was the most frequently used measure (33.3% of studies). In-home interviewing was exclusively used by 47.6% of the studies, while 39 studies (61.9%) reported the use of self-administered questionnaires. Over two-thirds of the studies (34.9%) used questionnaires to investigate the association between chronic diseases and/or associated factors. CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that the wide range of instruments and modes of questionnaire administration used by the studies may hinder comparisons between population groups with the same characteristics or needs. There is a lack of research on QoL and the factors affecting productive capacity. Studies of QoL in older persons should focus not only on the effects of disease and treatment, but also on the determinants of active aging and actions designed to promote it. Further research is recommended to determine which QoL instruments are best suited for population-based studies.

Abstract
Asthma and obesity are both common conditions, which lead to a substantial public health burden. The obese-asthma phenotype is characterized by poor asthma control, impaired lung function and decreased efficacy of inhaled treatment. However, this phenotype is highly heterogeneous and involves numerous mechanisms, including systemic inflammation and adipokines. A role for microbiota modifications and genetics has been suggested. Obese-asthma patient management currently consists in weight loss and usual anti-asthmatic treatment. New therapeutic options are being evaluated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High body mass index (BMI) has been associated with lower risks of suicidal behaviour and being underweight with increased risks. However, evidence is inconsistent and sparse, particularly for women. We aim to study this relationship in a large cohort of UK women. METHODS In total 1.2 million women, mean age 56 (s.d. 5) years, without prior suicide attempts or other major illness, recruited in 1996-2001 were followed by record linkage to national hospital admission and death databases. Cox regression yielded relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for attempted suicide and suicide by BMI, adjusted for baseline lifestyle factors and self-reported treatment for depression or anxiety. RESULTS After 16 (s.d. 3) years of follow-up, 4930 women attempted suicide and 642 died by suicide. The small proportion (4%) with BMI <20 kg/m2 were at clearly greater risk of attempted suicide (RR = 1.38, 95% CI 1.23-1.56) and suicide (RR = 2.10, 1.59-2.78) than women of BMI 20-24.9 kg/m2; p < 0.0001 for both comparisons. Small body size at 10 and 20 years old was also associated with increased risks. Half the cohort had BMIs >25 kg/m2 and, while risks were somewhat lower than for BMI 20-24.9 kg/m2 (attempted suicide RR = 0.91, 0.86-0.96; p = 0.001; suicide RR = 0.79, 0.67-0.93; p = 0.006), the reductions in risk were not strongly related to level of BMI. CONCLUSIONS Being underweight is associated with a definite increase in the risk of suicidal behaviour, particularly death by suicide. Residual confounding cannot be excluded for the small and inconsistent decreased risk of suicidal behaviour associated with being overweight or obese.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to assess the association between body mass index (BMI) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and to further explore gender differences in BMI-HRQOL association among adults. METHODS We used data from the fifth Health Service Survey of Shandong Province, which was part of China's National Health Service Survey (NHSS), a total of 27,257 adults aged 18 and over were interviewed. The HRQOL was measured using the EuroQOL-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) instrument. One-way ANOVA and Post hoc tests were used to compare EQ-5D utility values and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores between BMI categories. Tobit regression models were used to identify the association between BMI and HRQOL for male and female separately after controlling for influential confounders, and to assess gender differences on the relationship between BMI and HRQOL. RESULTS The prevalence of underweight in men and women were 3.2 and 5.3%, respectively, while the prevalence of overweight/obesity in men and women were 35.7 and 34.6%, respectively. Men had higher EQ-5D utility values and VAS scores than women. The mean EQ-5D utility value and VAS score was highest in obese men and normal-weight women, respectively. After controlling potential confounders, being underweight was significantly and negatively associated with lower HRQOL among adults. The relationship between obesity and gender was that in women obesity was negatively and significantly associated with HRQOL, whereas in men this association was positive but not statistically significant. Results of gender by BMI interaction in regression model showed that this difference between men and women in this respect was significant. CONCLUSIONS The association between BMI and HRQOL differed by gender and the so-called "obesity-HRQOL paradox" phenomenon was verified in male adults. Gender difference should be considered when implementing targeted weight control programs and appropriate interventions to improve HRQOL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assessed health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and related risk factors among adults with asthma in the United States. Using the 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), we examined the association between four domains of impaired HRQoL and selected explanatory factors. METHODS A BRFSS sample of 39,321 adults with asthma was used in this study. We examined the association between fair/poor health, ≥ 14 mentally unhealthy days, ≥ 14 physically unhealthy days, and ≥ 14 days of activity limitation and selected explanatory variables (sex, race/ethnicity, age, annual household income, healthcare coverage, physical activity, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), having a coexisting disease, and being diagnosed with depression) using multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS Income, physical activity status, smoking status, coexisting diseases, and depression were strongly associated with all HRQoL domains. Blacks had significantly less ≥ 14 physically unhealthy days (23.4%; aPR = 0.82 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72, 0.92]) and ≥ 14 days of activity limitation (18.3%; aPR = 0.81 [0.70, 0.94]) and Hispanics had significantly more fair/poor health (38.4%; aPR = 1.31 [1.18, 1.45]) than whites. Underweight and obese had significantly more fair/poor health, and underweight significantly more ≥ 14 physically unhealthy days, compared with normal weight. Adults aged 55 years or older had significantly less ≥ 14 mentally unhealthy days than adults 18-24 years. CONCLUSIONS Multiple factors were associated with impaired HRQoL. Providing strategies to address potential risk factors such as low income, physically inactive, smoker, and obese or underweight should be considered to improve HRQoL among adults with asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well documented that obesity is strongly associated with mortality and morbidity, but less is known about its impact on functional status and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The purpose of this study was to calculate the impact of the Body Mass Index (BMI) on the HRQOL of the Spanish adult population, with special emphasis on BMI ≥ 35. METHODS We used the Spanish National Health Survey (SNHS) 2011-2012 to assess the statistical association between HRQOL, measured through the EuroQol-5D-5L questionnaire, and the BMI. We conducted linear regression analysis for the EuroQol-5D-5L Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and probit regressions for each of the five dimensions of the EuroQol-5D-5L. RESULTS Self-perceived problems in the five dimensions of the EuroQol-5D-5L increased along the BMI, especially in the mobility and pain/discomfort dimensions. Having a BMI ≥ 35 reduced HRQOL even in the absence of chronic diseases. After controlling for comorbidities, severe obesity decreased the VAS score by an average of 1.9 points and increased the probability of reporting any HRQOL problem in mobility (11.8%), self-care (2.2%), usual activities (4.3%) and pain/discomfort (7.4%). No association was found between obesity and mental problems. All the parameters analysed suggest that HRQOL in women and people aged 65 years and over was significantly worse than average. CONCLUSIONS BMI is an explanatory factor of self-perceived quality of life. Obesity is associated with a worse HRQOL, especially in women and people aged over 64 years. These results may be useful for designing prevention or treatment health policies to target obesity among the Spanish population.

Abstract
Background This study examined sex-specific differences in physical health-related quality of life (HRQoL) across subgroups of metabolic health and obesity. We specifically asked whether (1) obesity is related to lower HRQoL independent of metabolic health status and potential confounders, and (2) whether associations are similar in men and women. Methods We used cross-sectional data from the German Health Interview and Examination Survey 2008–11. Physical HRQoL was measured using the Short Form-36 version 2 physical component summary (PCS) score. Based on harmonized ATPIII criteria for the definition of the metabolic health and a body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 to define obesity, individuals were classified as metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO), metabolically unhealthy non-obese (MUNO), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO). Sex-specific analyses including multivariable linear regression analyses were based on PCS as the dependent variable, metabolic health and obesity category as the independent variable with three categories and MHNO as the reference, and age, education, lifestyle and comorbidities as confounders. Results This study included 6860 participants (3298 men, 3562 women). Compared to MHNO, all other metabolic health and obesity categories had significantly lower PCS in both sexes. As reflected by the beta coefficients [95% confidence interval] from bivariable linear regression models, a significant inverse association with PCS was strongest for MUO (men: −7.0 [−8.2; −5.8]; women: −9.0 [−10.2; −7.9]), intermediate for MUNO (men: −4.2 [−5.3; −3.1]; women: −5.6 [−6.8; −4.4]) and least pronounced for MHO (men: −2.2 [−3.6; −0.8]; women −3.9 [−5.4; −2.5]). Differences in relation to MHNO remained statistically significant for all groups after adjusting for confounders, but decreased in particular for MUNO (men:–1.3 [−2.3; −0.3]; women: −1.5 [−2.7; −0.3]. Conclusions Obesity was significantly related to lower physical HRQoL, independent of metabolic health status. Potential confounders including age, educational status, health-related behaviors, and comorbidities explained parts of the inverse relationship. Associations were evident in both sexes and consistently more pronounced among women than men. Abstract
PURPOSE Obesity is a well-recognized risk factor for impaired health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the mechanisms underlying the obesity-HRQOL associations. In this study, we explored potential mediators of the associations between obesity and HRQOL. METHODS Body mass index (BMI), an indicator of obesity, and HRQOL data were available for the 34,565 individuals 20 years of age and older participating in the cross-sectional Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2012. HRQOL was measured by the EuroQol five-dimension descriptive system. Path analysis was performed to assess the contributions of obesity-related diseases and self-rated health (SRH) on the relationships between obesity and HRQOL. RESULTS In men, obesity was negatively associated with HRQOL through diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia and positively associated with HRQOL through SRH. These opposite indirect effects offset one another and produced a non-significant association between obesity and HRQOL in men. However, in women, obesity was directly associated with HRQOL and indirectly associated with HRQOL through diabetes mellitus and SRH. Since these associations were in the same negative direction, the negative obesity-HRQOL association was clearly observed in women. CONCLUSIONS Obesity was negatively associated with HRQOL through obesity-related diseases in both genders. However, in men, the positive association between obesity and SRH resulted in a non-significant association of obesity with HRQOL.
