Abstract
Background: Studies have shown that food insecurity is associated with electronic vapor products (EVP) use in adults; however, an understanding of this relationship in adolescents is needed to inform prevention efforts in this age group. Aim: Examine the relationship of food insecurity with EVP use patterns, frequency and source of acquisition in high school students. Methods: This cross-sectional study used Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) 2019 data from states that incorporated the YRBS' optional food insecurity question. The data included 42,154 high school students with complete information on food insecurity and two EVP-related questions. Responses to EVP-related questions identified "ever users," "current users," "former users," "current dual EVP-cigarette users," and assessed "frequency of EVP use among current users" and "source of EVP acquisition." Logistic regression examined associations of food insecurity with EVP-related outcomes. Results: The proportion of high school students who ever used EVP was 48.3% and the proportion of food-insecure students was about 12%. Food security status significantly differed by race/ethnicity of students, such that the proportion of food insecure students classified as "non-Hispanic White" was lower than the proportion of food secure students classified as "non-Hispanic White." Food insecurity was significantly associated with greater odds of ever EVP use (odds ratio (OR) = 1.75; 95% confidence interval (CI) = (1.55, 1.96)), current EVP use (OR = 2.07; 95% CI = (1.80, 2.37); using never users as reference category) and current dual use of EVP and cigarettes (OR = 2.91; 95% CI = (2.38, 3.55)). Food insecurity also was associated with greater odds of current EVP use (OR = 1.54; 95% CI = (1.28, 1.84)) when former users were used as reference category. In current users, food insecurity was related to greater odds of daily EVP use (OR = 1.40; 95% CI = (1.14, 1.70)) compared to occasional use. Conclusions: Study findings imply that efforts targeting prevention/cessation of EVP use should consider reducing food insecurity in high school students.

Abstract
Food insecurity is associated with cigarette smoking, yet little is known about how variability in the experience of food insecurity may relate to patterns of cigarette use. We sought to examine patterns of food insecurity and cigarette use during the COVID-19 pandemic (April 2020-March 2021). We analyzed longitudinal survey data from a nationally representative panel of adults in the United States (N = 7,880) from the Understanding Coronavirus in America Study. The primary independent variable was ten trajectories of food insecurity. Our dependent variable was past 7-day cigarette use (count of days used cigarettes). Poisson regression using generalized estimating equations was run controlling for key covariates. The prevalence of cigarette use on at least one day in the past week was lowest (17.5 %) for those who Remained Food Secure, and highest (57.9 %) among those who Became Fully Food Insecure, a group characterized by having high probability of becoming food insecure during the study period. Among those who reported at least one day of cigarette use in the past week, fewer than half (40.1 %) reported sustained use across all waves of the study. Those who Became Fully Food Insecure had an incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 1.73 (95 % CI: 1.18, 2.54) compared to those who Remained Food Secure with respect to number of smoking days. While different patterns of food insecurity are related to cigarette smoking at the population level, these results highlight that food insecurity, a key social need, may represent a novel strategy for informing reduction of tobacco use disparities.

Abstract
Many low-income adults who smoke also have unmet social needs, such as food insecurity, which can serve as a barrier to smoking cessation. We developed a novel intervention to jointly address smoking cessation and food insecurity and assessed its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes. We enrolled participants who screened for food insecurity, reported smoking daily, and were ready to quit. All participants received 3 months of resources navigation from a community health worker through monthly telephone calls for referrals and check-ins for smoking cessation and food access resources. Participants randomized to the intervention group received an economic intervention equivalent to the cost of 1 week of groceries/month for 3 months. We randomized 55 participants who were smoking on average 13 cigarettes/day. The trial was feasible and acceptable based on 3-month retention rates (80%) and end-of-study qualitative feedback (91% would recommend the study to others). At 3 months, participants in the intervention versus control group reported a longer length of abstinence from smoking and had a higher proportion of serious quit attempts. Results from this pilot study suggest the importance of attending to social needs, particularly food insecurity, as a strategy to promote smoking cessation among low-income adults who smoke.

Abstract
Existing research has established the detrimental effects of food insecurity on health. However, understanding of the social conditions that may moderate this relationship remains limited. To address this gap, the study investigates two questions: First, does marital status moderate the association between food insecurity and self-rated health? Second, if such moderation exists, does its impact vary based on gender? Data from the 2017-2018 Canadian Community Health Survey, a nationally representative survey conducted by Statistics Canada (n =101 647), were utilized for this investigation. The findings demonstrated that individuals living in food-insecure households reported poorer self-rated mental and general health. However, the negative impact of food insecurity on both health outcomes was less pronounced among married individuals than among their unmarried counterparts. Furthermore, the stress-buffering role of marriage was found to be more substantial among men than among women. In light of the significant stress-buffering role of marriage revealed in this study, it is crucial for policies to aim at providing comparable coping resources to unmarried individuals, particularly women.

Abstract
PURPOSE Smokers can spend a substantial amount on cigarettes, potentially constraining their ability to purchase food. We tested the association of smoking cessation and household food security. METHODS Using the Current Population Survey (2001-2019), we longitudinally linked the Tobacco Use Supplement and the Food Security Supplement (n = 71,278). Among adult smokers (n = 13,144), we used modified Poisson regression to model household food insecurity as a function of quit status (continuing smokers vs. recent quitters), adjusting for sex, age, household size, children in the household, and other household smokers. We also used multinomial logistic regression to examine more detailed food security status (high, marginal, low, very low). RESULTS The adjusted probability of household food insecurity at follow-up was 11% (95% CI: 8.7%-13%) for recent quitters and 20% (95% CI: 19%-21%) for continuing smokers. Continuing smokers had a lower adjusted probability of high food security (69% vs. 80%) and a higher adjusted probability of marginal (11% vs. 9.8%), low (12% vs. 7%), and very low food security (7.8% vs. 3.6%) compared to recent quitters. CONCLUSIONS Cigarette cessation is associated with a lower risk of household food insecurity. Therefore, promoting tobacco cessation alongside food assistance and poverty reduction policies may help alleviate food insecurity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Understanding the factors associated with senior food insecurity is key to understanding senior-specific needs to develop targeted interventions and ultimately lower the prevalence and the incidence of food insecurity. We aimed to systematically review published literature and summarise the associated factors of food insecurity in older adults in the USA. DESIGN We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of science, EconLit and JSTOR databases for peer-reviewed articles published in English between January 2005 and September 2019 that assessed food security or its associated factors for US adults aged 60 years and older. After a two-step screening process, twenty articles were retained and included in the review. SETTING NA. PARTICIPANTS NA. RESULTS The majority of studies were cross-sectional (70 %), consisted of data from one state (60 %), and had large sample sizes. Food-insecure individuals were more likely to be younger, less educated, Black or African American, female, a current smoker, low income, and self-report fair/poor health, have chronic conditions, and utilise government assistance programmes. Food insecurity was associated with medication non-adherence, poor mental health outcomes and limitations in physical functioning. Results were mixed for overweight/obesity status. There was no discernable pattern related to the consistency of findings by the assessed quality of the included studies. CONCLUSIONS Food insecurity is a prevalent and pervasive issue for older adults. The numerous correlates identified suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing food and nutrition safety net and medication assistance programmes are warranted, and upstream, systemic-level interventions may be best suited to deal with the correlates of food insecurity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food environment factors contribute to cardiovascular disease, but their effect on population-level heart failure (HF) mortality is unclear. METHODS We utilized the National Vital Statistics System and USDA Food Environment Atlas to collect HF mortality rates (MR) and 2 county food environment indices: (1) food insecurity percentage (FI%) and (2) food environment index (FEI), a scaled index (0-10, 10 best) incorporating FI% and access to healthy food. We used linear regression to estimate the association between food environment and HF MR Results: Mean county FI% and FEI were 13% and 7.8 in 2956 included counties. Counties with FI% above the national median had significantly higher HF MR (30.7 versus 26.7 per 100 000; P<0.001) compared with FI% below the national median. Counties with HF MR above the national median had higher FI%, lower FEI, lower density of grocery stores, poorer access to stores among older adults, and lower Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation rate (P<0.001 for all). Lower county FI% (β=-1.3% per 1% decrease) and higher county FEI (β=-3.6% per 1-unit increase in FEI) were significantly associated with lower HF MR after adjustment for county demographic, socioeconomic, and health factors. This association was stronger for HF MR compared with non-HF cardiovascular disease MR and all-cause MR The relationship between food environment and HF MR was stronger in counties with the highest income inequity and poverty rate. CONCLUSIONS Healthier food environment is significantly associated with lower HF mortality at the county level. This reinforces the role of food security on cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract
Tobacco use in the U.S. is increasingly concentrated among populations with socioeconomic disadvantages such as food insecurity. Building on prior studies showing that food insecurity increases odds of cigarette smoking, the current study sought to examine how food insecurity and other social needs, particularly financial strain, transportation barriers, and housing/utility insecurity, were associated with smoking status among adult patients seen in a county hospital system. We analyzed data from the electronic health record of patients from The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, Ohio, USA), covering a two-year period since implementation of social determinants of health assessments (2019–2021; N = 45,151 patients). Logistic regression analyses were used to examine associations with smoking status. Compared to the overall smoking prevalence (21 %), smoking was higher among patients screening for transportation barriers (41 %), financial strain (39 %), food insecurity (34 %), and housing/utility insecurity (27 %). Each of these social needs was independently associated with increased odds of current smoking (all p < 0.05). Smoking prevalence increased sequentially as the number of social needs increased; with each addition of a social need, there was a dose-response association with higher odds of current smoking (adjusted ORs ranged from 1.56 to 3.76, all p < 0.001), and current smoking specifically among ever smoking patients (adjusted ORs ranged from 1.39 to 3.01, all p < 0.001). There was substantial overlap among several social needs and smoking status. Alongside improving access to evidence-based cessation treatments and services, the findings raise the possibility that addressing social needs might reduce barriers to quitting and thereby reduce tobacco use disparities.

Abstract
Background Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) have a high prevalence of smoking and frequently experience unmet social determinants of health (SDOH), which may be barriers to smoking cessation. Hospitalization is an opportunity to encourage smoking cessation. Unfortunately, many clinicians do not provide tobacco treatment to support the maintenance of cessation achieved during hospitalization. Interventions are required to support these high-risk individuals after hospital discharge. Objective This study aimed to test the feasibility and acceptability of a 28-day SMS text messaging program tailored to individuals with OUD, which provides smoking cessation support and addresses unmet SDOH needs. Methods From July to December 2019, we enrolled 25 individuals who were hospitalized with tobacco dependence and OUD at our large safety net hospital. The SMS text messaging program was initiated during hospitalization and continued for 28 days. Participants were enrolled in either the ready to quit within 30 days or the not ready to quit within 30 days program based on their readiness to quit. Automated SMS text messages were sent twice daily for 4 weeks. The topics included health and cost benefits of quitting, both general and opioid specific (16 messages); managing mood and stress (8 messages); motivation, coping strategies, and encouragement (18 messages); addressing medication misconceptions (5 messages); links to resources to address substance use (2 messages providing links to the Massachusetts Substance Use Helpline and Boston Medical Center resources), tobacco dependence (1 message providing a link to the Massachusetts Quitline), and unmet SDOH needs (6 messages assessing SDOH needs with links to resources if unmet SDOH needs were identified). Questionnaires and interviews were conducted at baseline and at 2 and 4 weeks after enrollment. Results The participants were 56% (14/25) female, 36% (9/25) African American, 92% (23/25) unemployed, and 96% (24/25) Medicaid insured. Approximately 84% (21/25) activated the program, and none of the participants unsubscribed. Approximately 57% (12/21) completed either the 2- or 4-week questionnaires. Program satisfaction was high (overall mean 6.7, SD 0.8, range 1-7). Many perceived that the SMS text messaging program provided social support, companionship, and motivation to stop smoking. Messages about the health benefits of quitting were well received, whereas messages on how quitting cigarettes may prevent relapse from other substances had mixed views, highlighting the importance of tailoring interventions to patient preferences. Conclusions SMS text messaging to promote smoking cessation and address SDOH needs may be an effective tool for improving quit rates and health outcomes in individuals with tobacco dependence and OUD. Our study adds to the growing body of evidence that SMS text messaging approaches are feasible and acceptable for providing tobacco treatment to all individuals who smoke, even among low-income populations who have OUD and are not ready to quit.

Abstract
Objectives: Smokers with financial and food insecurity may find it difficult to quit smoking and reduce their children’s tobacco smoke exposure (TSE). The objective was to examine the associations between child TSE and financial and food insecurity among U.S. school-aged children. Methods: We examined the 2018−2019 National Survey of Children’s Health data on 17,484 children 6−11 years old. Children were categorized into TSE groups: (1) No TSE: did not live with a smoker; (2) thirdhand smoke (THS) exposure alone: lived with a smoker who did not smoke inside the home; or (3) secondhand smoke (SHS) and THS exposure: lived with a smoker who smoked inside the home. We conducted weighted logistic, ordinal, and linear regression analyses to assess the relationships between child TSE status and financial and food insecurity, adjusting for covariates. Results: Overall, 13.1% and 1.8% of children had THS exposure alone and SHS and THS exposure, respectively. Compared to children with no TSE, children with THS exposure alone were at 2.17 increased odds (95% CI = 1.83, 2.58, p < 0.001) and children with SHS and THS exposure were at 2.24 increased odds (95% CI = 1.57, 3.19, p < 0.001) of having financial insecurity. Children with THS exposure alone were at 1.92 increased odds (95% CI = 1.58, 2.33, p < 0.001) and children with SHS and THS exposure were at 2.14 increased odds (95% CI = 1.45, 3.16, p < 0.001) of having food insecurity. Conclusions: Children with TSE are at increased risk of experiencing financial and food insecurity. When developing tobacco interventions, a holistic approach to tobacco control that addresses ways to decrease financial and food hardships may improve outcomes.

Abstract
IntroductionPrevious research quantifying the relationship between tobacco use and food insecurity has focused on cigarette smoking. E-cigarette use has become popular in recent years. Drawing on large, population-based survey data, this study augments the previous research, considering the association of e-cigarette use with food insecurity among low-income adults.MethodsWe analysed data from the California Health Interview Survey in 2014–2019. The study sample consisted of 25 948 respondents aged 18–64 who lived in low-income (<200% of the Federal Poverty Level) households. Multivariable logistic regression models were estimated to examine the associations of e-cigarette use as well as dual use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes with food insecurity.ResultsOf California low-income adults, 6.4% identified as current e-cigarette users (3.0% dual users of e-cigarettes and cigarettes, and 3.4% sole e-cigarette users) and 43.0% reported food insecurity. After controlling for confounding factors, food insecurity was significantly more likely to be reported among current e-cigarette users (adjusted OR (AOR)=1.67; 95% CI 1.25 to 2.23) compared with never e-cigarette users, and among dual users (AOR=2.21; 95% CI 1.63 to 3.00), current sole e-cigarette users (AOR=1.66; 95% CI 1.15 to 2.40), and current sole cigarette smokers (AOR=1.46; 95% CI 1.22 to 1.76) compared with never tobacco users. The odds of food insecurity among dual users were significantly greater than sole cigarette smokers but not statistically different from sole e-cigarette users.ConclusionsUsing e-cigarette is an associated risk factor for food insecurity among low-income adults. Dual use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes has a significantly greater risk of food insecurity compared with smoking cigarettes alone.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evidence of digital interventions that are efficacious among low-income populations is scarce. In a secondary analysis, we determined the efficacy and utilization of an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based smartphone application (iCanQuit) versus a U.S. Clinical Practice Guidelines (USCPG)-based smartphone application (QuitGuide) for smoking cessation in low-income adults enrolled in the iCanQuit randomized trial. METHODS Participants were randomized to receive iCanQuit (n = 437) or QuitGuide (n = 460) for 12-months. Consistent with the main trial, the primary outcome was self-reported complete-case 30-day point prevalence abstinence (PPA) at 12-months. Secondary outcomes were 7-day PPA, missing-as-smoking and multiple imputation, prolonged abstinence, and cessation of all tobacco products at 12-months. Outcome data retention, utilization, and change in ACT-based processes were compared across arms. RESULTS Participants were recruited from 48 U.S. states. Retention rate was 88% at 12-months and did not differ by arm. At 12-months, iCanQuit was 1.46 times more efficacious than QuitGuide for smoking cessation (27% vs. 20%; OR=1.46 95% CI: 1.04, 2.06). Findings were similar for missing-as-smoking imputation (23% vs. 18%; OR=1.41 95% CI: 1.01, 1.97) and multiple imputation at 12-months (27% vs. 20%; OR=1.51 95% CI: 1.07, 2.14). Treatment utilization was significantly higher among iCanQuit than QuitGuide participants. Increased acceptance of cues to smoke mediated the effect of treatment on cessation. CONCLUSIONS The iCanQuit smartphone application was more efficacious and engaging for smoking cessation among low-income adults than a USCPG-based smartphone application. A nationwide dissemination trial of iCanQuit is warranted to determine whether iCanQuit may alleviate cessation-related disparities among low-income adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES People living with HIV (PLHIV) in the USA, particularly women, have a higher prevalence of food insecurity than the general population. Cigarette smoking among PLHIV is common (42%), and PLHIV are 6-13 times more likely to die from lung cancer than AIDS-related causes. This study sought to investigate the associations between food security status and smoking status and severity among a cohort of predominantly low-income women of colour living with and without HIV in the USA. DESIGN Women enrolled in an ongoing longitudinal cohort study from 2013 to 2015. SETTING Nine participating sites across the USA. PARTICIPANTS 2553 participants enrolled in the Food Insecurity Sub-Study of the Women's Interagency HIV Study, a multisite cohort study of US women living with HIV and demographically similar HIV-seronegative women. OUTCOMES Current cigarette smoking status and intensity were self-reported. We used cross-sectional and longitudinal logistic and Tobit regressions to assess associations of food security status and changes in food security status with smoking status and intensity. RESULTS The median age was 48. Most respondents were African-American/black (72%) and living with HIV (71%). Over half had annual incomes ≤US$12 000 (52%). Food insecurity (44%) and cigarette smoking (42%) were prevalent. In analyses adjusting for common sociodemographic characteristics, all categories of food insecurity were associated with greater odds of current smoking compared with food-secure women. Changes in food insecurity were also associated with increased odds of smoking. Any food insecurity was associated with higher smoking intensity. CONCLUSIONS Food insecurity over time was associated with smoking in this cohort of predominantly low-income women of colour living with or at risk of HIV. Integrating alleviation of food insecurity into smoking cessation programmes may be an effective method to reduce the smoking prevalence and disproportionate lung cancer mortality rate particularly among PLHIV.

Abstract
This study examined differences in the associations between food insecurity and serious psychological distress (SPD) by key sociodemographic factors in a population-based sample of low-income adults from the 2017 California Health Interview Survey (n = 6266). After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, low food security, and very low food security were both positively associated with SPD among all low-income adults. Upon stratification, these associations were most pronounced among adults under age 50, males, and in adults with children. Understanding disparities in the associations between food insecurity and psychological distress is critical in developing effective programs or policies to target the most vulnerable sub-groups.

Abstract
Objectives: To examine the relationship of food insecurity with sexual intercourse, multiple sexual partners and non-condom use. Methods: Data on food insecurity (hunger) and sexual behaviors from 205,296 adolescents from 53 countries. Associations were analyzed using meta-analysis. Results: Overall, 16.0% of the adolescents ever had sexual intercourse and the prevalence of moderate and severe food insecurity was 44.9% and 6.2%, respectively. Moderate and severe food insecurity was associated with higher odds for sexual intercourse. Any food insecurity was significantly associated with condom nonuse at last sex. Conclusions: Food insecurity was associated with higher odds of ever having sexual intercourse dose-dependently.

Abstract
African American caregivers in low-income, urban communities have high rates of food insecurity. Unemployment, education, smoking, stress, and depressive symptoms are associated with household food insecurity. A cumulative risk model suggests that accumulation of risk may compound food insecurity risk, and certain risk factors are more likely to co-occur. This study utilizes two approaches to examine food insecurity risk among African American caregivers with an adolescent daughter-a cumulative risk index to examine accumulation of risk and food insecurity risk; latent class analysis (LCA) to determine if certain risk profiles exist and their relation to food insecurity risk. Caregivers completed surveys including demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral questions (to create a cumulative risk index) and a validated 2-item food insecurity screen. LCA was used to identify risk profiles. Logistic regression was used to examine relations between cumulative risk, risk profiles, and food insecurity risk. Each additional cumulative risk index factor was associated with a 54% increase in odds of risk of food insecurity. LCA identified three subgroups: high stress/depression (class #1), low education/low stress and depression (class #2), and low risk overall (class #3). Odds of food insecurity risk were 4.7 times higher for class #1, and 1.5 times higher for class #2 compared with class #3. This study contributes to understanding of how food insecurity risk relates to cumulative risk and risk profiles. Findings can be used to improve food insecurity risk screening in clinical settings, enhancing intervention/referral for food security risk and mental health among African American caregivers and their households.

Abstract
Food insecurity affects 1 in 8 American adults annually, and is more prevalent in Black and sexual minority women. We applied an intersectional approach to investigate food insecurity prevalence in women with intersecting minority race and sexual orientation. We used two United States surveillance systems-National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 2013-2018 and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2014, to estimate how race and sexual orientation jointly influence food insecurity prevalence in women aged 18-59 years (NHIS: N = 47596; NHANES: N = 5106). All analyses were stratified for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) use. Relative measures estimated weighted prevalence ratios (PR) comparing Black and White sexual minority women (SMW) to heterosexual White women. Absolute prevalence measures estimated the excess prevalence of food insecurity due to multiple marginalization. Patterns of food insecurity prevalence were similar across NHIS and NHANES, and differed only for non-SNAP users. Relative prevalence of food insecurity was greater in Black SMW than heterosexual White women in NHIS (PR: 2.16; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.41-3.30) and NHANES (PR: 2.79; 95% CI, 1.73-4.51). The strength of the association between multiple marginalization and food insecurity was stronger for Black SMW than White SMW. Absolute measures were significant only for NHIS and did not support our a priori hypothesis: For non-SNAP users, being Black and sexual minority reduced the joint disparity in food insecurity by approximately 50% (Synergy Index: 0.52; 95% CI, 0.11-0.93). Overall, our study illuminated population-level differences in food insecurity among women of diverse minority races and sexual orientations. Black SMW experienced high rates of food insecurity, which may contribute to chronic disease disparities. Yet, intersecting minority social positions (race and sexual orientation) reduced food insecurity; these findings are unexpected and must be further investigated. Increasing SNAP use among multiply marginalized women may attenuate food insecurity disparities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Food insecurity has been associated with obesity, but previous studies are inconsistent and few included infants. We examined associations between household food security and infant adiposity and assessed the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as effect modifiers. We hypothesized that infants from food-insecure households would have greater adiposity, with attenuation by WIC and SNAP. METHODS We repeatedly measured 666 infants from the southeastern United States in 2013-2017. We categorized households as high, marginal, low, or very low using the US Household Food Security Survey Module. Outcomes were BMI z score, subscapular and triceps skinfold-for-age z score, the sum of subscapular and triceps skinfolds, the ratio of subscapular and triceps skinfolds, and BMI z score ≥1 (at risk for overweight). We used covariate-adjusted repeated-measures linear and logistic regressions. RESULTS Of infants, 68.6% were Black and 60.5% had household incomes <$20 000. Interactions between food security and WIC and/or SNAP were not significant. Compared with infants from high food security households, infants from very low food security households had higher BMI z scores (0.18 U; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.01 to 0.35), higher subscapular skinfold-for-age z scores (0.31 U; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.59), a higher sum of subscapular and triceps skinfolds (0.53 mm; 95% CI 0.002 to 1.07), and greater odds of being at risk for overweight (odds ratio 1.55; 95% CI 1.14 to 2.10). Infants from low food security households had greater odds of being at risk for overweight (odds ratio 1.72; 95% CI 1.17 to 2.10). CONCLUSIONS In larger and longer studies, researchers should examine food security and adiposity in young children.

Abstract
Background Nearly 40 million American adults report past year food insecurity. This is concerning, as food insecurity is associated with chronic disease morbidity and premature mortality. Women disproportionately experience food insecurity, and sexual minority women (i.e., lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual women reporting same-sex behavior; SMW) may be at greater risk for experiencing food insecurity disparities. The purpose of this study was to investigate patterns and prevalence of food insecurity and food assistance use in sexual minority and exclusively heterosexual women using population-level health surveillance data. Methods Using pooled 2004–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (N = 7379), we estimated weighted point prevalence of past 12-month food insecurity, severe food insecurity, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) use, and emergency food assistance use. We then used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate prevalence ratios comparing SMW to exclusively heterosexual women on all outcomes. Women were classified by sexual identity and lifetime same-sex behavior as lesbian (n = 88), bisexual (n = 251), heterosexual and reporting same-sex behavior (heterosexual WSW; n = 366), or exclusively heterosexual women (referent; n = 6674). Results Between 20.6–27.3% of lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual WSW reported past 12-month food insecurity (versus 13.1% of exclusively heterosexual women). All SMW reported greater prevalence of past 12-month food insecurity and severe food insecurity than exclusively heterosexual women: prevalence ratios (PR) ranged from 1.34 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05–1.70) to 1.84 (95% CI, 1.13–3.01). No differences were found in SNAP participation by sexual orientation, but more lesbians and heterosexual WSW reported using emergency food assistance in the past 12-months (PR = 1.89; 95% CI, 1.29–2.79 and PR = 1.43; 95% CI, 1.03–2.00 respectively). Conclusions All SMW reported higher prevalence of food insecurity than exclusively heterosexual women. Lesbians and heterosexual WSW were also more likely to rely on emergency food assistance. This is problematic as SNAP use may reduce food insecurity over time, but emergency food resources (e.g., food pantries) do not. More evidence is needed to understand the multilevel factors driving food insecurity in this population to develop policy and community-based efforts to increase SNAP participation and decrease food insecurity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Among food pantry users there is a high prevalence of both smoking and food insecurity, which may be related to one another. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a smoking cessation program carried out in food pantries on the smoking status and the food security status of food pantry users. METHODS / DESIGN Before starting the cluster randomised controlled trial, stakeholders will be engaged to adapt a behavioural group counselling program for smoking cessation to the needs of the food pantry users in a pre study. Food pantry users and workers as well as other experts, such as smoking cessation trainers, social workers, and psychologists, will be involved, using the world café technique and telephone interviews and a qualitative thematic analysis for data analysis to design the concept of the intervention program will be applied. In the second phase, the impact of the intervention on the smoking status and on food insecurity will be investigated by a cluster randomised controlled trial. A total of 416 food pantry users across 32 clusters (food pantries) in Berlin, Germany, should be recruited and randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the waiting list control group. The intervention will consist of a behavioural group counselling program for smoking cessation, specially tailored for food pantry users, as well as optional nicotine replacement therapy and the implementation of environmental smoking reduction measures in the food pantries. The primary outcomes 6 months after the treatment will be self-reported continuous smoking abstinence, validated by exhaled carbon monoxide (< 10 ppm of carbon monoxide), and increased food security level (the percentage of participants with an improved food security level). DISCUSSION This study will be the first long-term investigation into the effect of a smoking cessation program on smoking status and food insecurity. The results of this study will inform the implementation of smoking cessation programs in food pantries throughout Germany. TRIAL REGISTRATION Prospectively registered DRKS00020037 . Abstract
Household food insecurity has been associated with adverse health outcomes; however, the mechanisms underlying these associations are not well-defined. Using data from 5005 adults from the 2007-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), we examined associations between household food insecurity and cumulative biological risk, a measure of the body's physiological response to chronic stress. Household food security was assessed using the 18-item Household Food Security Survey Module. Marginal food security refers to 1-2 positive responses, and food insecurity refers to ≥3 positive responses. The cumulative biological risk scores were calculated based on the distributions of ten biomarkers from the cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune systems. Elevated biological risk was defined as a risk score of ≥3. Multivariable regression models were used to examine associations between food security and cumulative biological risk scores, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. After multivariable adjustment, food insecurity was associated with a 0.14-unit higher cumulative biological risk score (95% CI 0.05-0.22, p-trend = 0.003) and higher odds of elevated biological risk (OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.05-1.37, p-trend = 0.003). These associations differed by gender. Among women, food insecurity was associated with 0.30-unit higher cumulative biological risk score (95% CI 0.14-0.45, p-trend = 0.0004) and higher odds of elevated biological risk (OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.29-2.00, p-trend < 0.0001). These associations were not observed in men. Women experiencing food insecurity demonstrated elevated levels of biological risk. These findings support the hypothesis that food insecurity may be associated with women's chronic health outcomes through the pathway of chronic stress. Further research is needed to understand why these associations were not observed in men.

Abstract
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the commentary by Kim-Mozeleski and colleagues on "Food insecurity transitions and smoking behavior among older adults who smoke". This study examined the influence of food insecurity transitions on smoking cessation and daily cigarette consumption in 2014 within a sample of older U.S. adults from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) who indicated that they smoked in 2012. In particular, Kim-Mozeleski and colleagues highlight that findings of Bergmans (2019) contrast with results of a previous publication by Kim-Mozeleski and colleagues. In sum, it is not readily apparent why findings contradict those of Kim-Mozeleski et al. (2018). Moderation or confounding due to macroeconomic factors that influence health and behavior is a possibility. Bergmans (2019) examined associations over a recent 2-year period of U.S. economic growth. In contrast, data from Kim-Mozeleski et al. (2018) spanned 12 years and overlapped the Great Recession. A detailed response to the commentary is provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking, alcohol abuse and dual substance use represent significant public health problems and are thought to contribute to significant disparities in morbidity and mortality in the United States. Associations of food insecurity with these substances are poorly characterized, particularly concerning heavy alcohol consumption and dual substance use. Additionally, demographic factors may moderate these associations. METHODS In a cross-sectional, representative sample of Wisconsin adults (n = 1616), logistic regression was used to examine whether food insecurity was associated with cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol use and dual substance use. Interactions of food insecurity with gender, marital status and age group tested moderation by demographic factors. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Food insecurity was associated with cigarette smoking in men and women (odds ratio (OR) = 3.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.1-4.4); however, only among men was food insecurity associated with heavy alcohol use (OR = 1.5; 95% CI = 1.0-2.2) and dual substance use (OR = 5.2; 95% CI = 1.5-18.6). Marital status and age group did not moderate associations of food insecurity with substance use. CONCLUSIONS Food insecurity and substance use are highly correlated. Heavy alcohol consumption and dual use were positively correlated with food insecurity among men, but not among women. Longitudinal analyses are needed to disentangle temporality and underlying pathways of observed associations. Additionally, future work should determine whether interventions and policies targeting food insecurity can simultaneously reduce cigarette and alcohol use.

Abstract
Psychological distress and tobacco use are known to co-occur for many reasons, including vulnerabilities associated with socioeconomic disadvantage. Food insecurity-a stressful condition due to inconsistent food access-is linked with increased psychological distress and is also an independent risk factor for smoking. We investigated the association between psychological distress and cigarette smoking, examining distress occurring with or without food insecurity, and variations in the associations by socioeconomic status. We analyzed data from the 2015 U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics (n = 9048). A four-category variable was constructed based on responses to validated measures of psychological distress and of food insecurity: no distress and no food insecurity; food insecurity without distress; distress without food insecurity; and distress with food insecurity. Weighted, robust Poisson regression analysis examined associations with current smoking, with analyses stratified by socioeconomic status. Smoking prevalence was highest among respondents experiencing psychological distress with food insecurity (39%). Results showed that respondents with food insecurity alone had higher smoking prevalence (33%) than respondents with psychological distress alone (20%). Only among respondents above poverty, psychological distress without food insecurity was significantly associated with current smoking (prevalence ratio = 1.44; 95% CI [1.25, 1.65]). For respondents at/below poverty, psychological distress without food insecurity was not significantly associated with current smoking. Further examining how socioeconomic stressors, such as food insecurity, intersect with psychological distress is needed to address continued socioeconomic disparities in cigarette smoking and develop effective population-based interventions.

Abstract
Tobacco use is a major health disparities issue in the United States; it is much more common in less-educated and lower-income groups. These groups also experience a higher prevalence of food insecurity. Previous studies analyzing the association between tobacco use and food insecurity have focused on only cigarettes. We assessed the relationship between food insecurity and use of cigarettes, alternative tobacco products (cigars, electronic cigarettes, smokeless tobacco), any tobacco product, and multiple tobacco products. Using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 1999 to 2014, we built multinomial logistic regression models predicting degree of food security (i.e., food security, low food security, very low food security) for use of different tobacco product types, any product, and multiple products. After adjustment, use of any product, relative to no use, was significantly associated with increased odds of both food insecurity outcomes: low (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.2, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.0-1.4) and very low (AOR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.6-2.2) food security. In a separate model, single product use, relative to no use, was significantly associated with increased odds of low (AOR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.3-1.7) and very low (AOR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.9-2.6) food security. For multiple product use the magnitude of association was higher for very low food security (AOR = 2.7, 95% CI: 1.8-4.0). The significant associations identified here can inform researchers and policymakers developing interventions to prevent tobacco- and food insecurity-related diseases. To be effective in reducing either health risk, interventions may need to target both tobacco use and food insecurity.

Abstract
Despite a significant reduction in tuberculosis (TB) mortality over the past decade, TB remains a leading cause of death worldwide. Food insecurity—through pathways such as malnutrition, mental health impact, and high-risk health behaviors—affects the risk of TB disease, treatment failure, and mortality. We searched the literature for studies reporting on the links between food insecurity and TB. In contrast to the well-documented interactions between food insecurity and HIV/AIDS, we found that the association between food insecurity and TB remains largely understudied—this is especially true with regard to non-nutritional correlations. Mental health and behavioral linkages between TB and food insecurity deserve further attention. An improved understanding of the pathways through which food insecurity impacts TB is crucial to inform evidence-based integration of interventions such as psychological counseling, psychiatric care, harm reduction programs, and efforts to address social determinants of disease within current TB programs.
