Abstract
PURPOSE The perinatal period, spanning from pregnancy through the first year after childbirth, is characterized by significant physiological, psychological, and socio-contextual changes. Women face complex stressors including psychosocial pressures, financial constraints, interpersonal dynamics, anticipatory stress related to parenthood, hormonal fluctuations, and societal expectations. These factors collectively influence the perinatal experience, increasing vulnerabilities and stress levels. METHODS A systematic review was conducted in October 2023 using PubMed, SPORTDiscus, PsycInfo, and Scopus databases. Only English-language publications were included. For the meta-analysis, only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were considered. Data extraction was performed independently by two reviewers using Covidence, focusing on study characteristics, population demographics, interventions, and outcomes. RESULTS The initial search identified 2,373 articles, with 1,196 duplicates removed, leaving 1,177 articles. After screening titles and abstracts, 1,247 were excluded for not meeting the inclusion criteria, resulting in 30 full-text articles reviewed for eligibility by two researchers. Nineteen studies were included in the systematic review, with four in the meta-analysis. Results indicated that higher levels of physical activity during pregnancy were consistently associated with improved postpartum mental health outcomes, including reduced depressive symptoms, lower anxiety, and enhanced overall well-being. Low-intensity exercises, such as yoga, were particularly effective in reducing postpartum depressive symptoms. The impact of moderate-intensity exercise varied, with some studies showing no significant effects. The meta-analysis of four RCTs using the EPDS demonstrated a significant reduction in depression and anxiety symptoms among postpartum women who participated in physical activity interventions, with a substantial overall effect size. CONCLUSION Developing physical activity and exercise regimens encompassing a range of intensities can address the unique physiological and psychological demands of the perinatal period, maximizing the therapeutic benefits of physical activity interventions.

Abstract
Maternal obesity has been associated with postpartum depression and a protective role of physical activity is indicated. This study aims to examine the role of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in the prospective association between body mass index (BMI) and depressive symptoms in a cohort of mothers. Depressive symptoms were assessed at 3 and 48 months postpartum using the Edinburgh Depression Scale. BMI was calculated from weight and height measurements at 24 months postpartum and self-reported pre-pregnancy weight. MVPA was measured by accelerometers at 12-16 weeks of pregnancy and 24 months postpartum. Accelerometry data were available for 1953 mothers in pregnancy and 2546 postpartum. BMI was not significantly associated with depressive symptoms. However, the relationship between pre-gestational BMI and depressive symptoms 3 months postpartum was moderated by MVPA (p = 0.04). Among mothers with low MVPA, the association between BMI and depressive symptoms was not significant. However, among those who performed ≥42 min of MPVA/day, the relationship became significant and inverse (β: -0.125; 95 %CI: -0.248; -0.001), with mothers with higher BMI and high MVPA having lower depressive symptom scores. In conclusion, MVPA performs a positive role in the association between BMI and depressive symptoms, reinforcing the importance of MVPA promotion among mothers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Guidelines recommending regular physical activity in pregnancy for improving pregnancy outcomes are informed by published meta-analyses. Inclusion of randomised trials of poor methodological quality may bias effect estimates. OBJECTIVES To assess the validity of these recommendations by focusing on trial quality. SEARCH STRATEGY Systematic search of PubMed, PubMed Central, Ovid Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and CINAHL from inception to 14 December 2023. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised trials evaluating an antenatal physical activity intervention alone, compared with no such intervention. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Trial quality was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Independent of this, studies were grouped based on degree of deviation from the intention to treat principle. Sequential meta-analysis was performed in which greater degrees of potential bias were allowed. Between intervention group comparisons used, relative risks or mean differences with 95% confidence intervals for dichotomous outcomes and continuous outcomes, respectively. MAIN RESULTS Overall, the quality of trial reporting was low. Only 5 trials (12.5%) were performed and analysed in keeping with the intention to treat principle. When considering only those trials performed rigorously, there was no evidence that antenatal physical activity improves pregnancy outcomes or limits gestational weight gain (WMD -0.60 kg; 95% CI -2.17, 0.98 WMD -0.60 kg; 95% CI -2.17, 0.98). CONCLUSIONS When considering only trials at no/negligible risk of bias, antenatal physical activity interventions were not associated with improved pregnancy outcomes. Most trials were not methodologically rigorous. Incorporation of such meta-analyses into pregnancy care guidelines may result in inaccurate recommendations.

Abstract
Introduction Postpartum depression is a significant global health challenge that affects mothers, infants, and families. Although various preventive strategies show promise, comprehensive reviews evaluating interventions among pregnant women without a clinical diagnosis of depression remain limited. This scoping review aims to identify and synthesize the existing evidence on proactive postpartum depression prevention programs initiated during pregnancy. Methods Following PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews, we systematically searched PubMed and Scopus, supplemented by manual reference reviews. Our search strategy combined terms related to postpartum depression, pregnancy, and preventive interventions. Studies were included if they evaluated interventions conducted during pregnancy, targeting women without a clinical diagnosis of depression, and assessed PPD outcomes using established diagnostic criteria or validated screening tools. Only English-language articles published between 2013 and 2023 were considered. Results A total of 49 studies met the inclusion criteria. Interventions were categorized into nine themes: psychoeducation (n = 18), home visits (n = 6), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) (n = 6), mindfulness (n = 6), exercise (n = 4), dietary supplements (n = 3), interpersonal therapy (IPT) (n = 4), consultation (n = 1), and inhalation aromatherapy (n = 1). Psychoeducational and mindfulness-based interventions consistently reduce PPD risk, particularly when delivered in structured, theory-driven formats and incorporating family support. Digital CBT interventions demonstrated limited effectiveness due to lower engagement, while home-visit and consultation-based interventions were effective when integrated into existing maternal healthcare despite scalability challenges. Exercise and dietary supplement interventions yielded inconsistent outcomes, indicating that factors such as adherence, duration, and intensity are crucial determinants of effectiveness. Conclusion Various proactive interventions are available to prevent PPD, and this scoping review systematically maps the different strategies used and their outcomes. Proactive, theory-based, and multi-component interventions, particularly psychoeducational and mindfulness programs, demonstrate promising potential. Future research should emphasize evaluating long-term outcomes, optimizing digital engagement strategies, and developing culturally tailored models to enhance scalability and accessibility across diverse populations, including low-resource settings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Robust randomized trials consistently demonstrate little impact from diet and physical activity interventions on gestational weight gain (GWG) and clinical outcomes, although meta-analyses report some benefit. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of trial quality on treatment effect estimates and review conclusions. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of dietary and/or physical activity interventions for pregnant women with a body mass index ≥18.5 kg/m2. We assessed studies for risk of bias and methodological features impacting reliability. Outcomes included GWG; gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM); pre-eclampsia; caesarean birth; and birth weight measures. For each outcome, a sequence of meta-analyses was performed based on intervention group and level of potential bias in the effect estimate. RESULTS We identified 128 eligible studies. The most robust estimate from a combined diet and physical activity behavioral intervention, with only studies at negligible risk of bias, was a difference in GWG of 1.10 kg (95% CI -1.62 to -0.58; 17,755 women). There was no evidence of an effect on any clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight discrepancies produced by the indiscriminate inclusion of studies with methodological flaws in previous systematic reviews. Regular weighing of pregnant women is futile in the absence of clinical benefit.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the motor, kinetotherapeutic, and psychological benefits of three aquatic therapeutic programs-aquagym recovery (AG), aquatic ludotherapy (ALT), and therapeutic swimming (TS)-for students specializing in balneo-physio-kinetotherapy. Methods The study group consisted of 101 students, out of which 43 students from the balneo-physiokinetotherapy study program (BFKT) and 67 master's degree students from physical therapy and functional rehabilitation (PTFR). The questionnaire was named Questionnaire regarding the benefits of therapeutic aquatic programs (QBTAP), and included 3 subscales according to the typology of the targeted objectives, namely: motor, kinetotherapeutic and psychological. The items of each subscale correspond to the objectives identified in the content of the 3 aquatic programs stipulated in the content of the courses corresponding to the disciplines in the education plans of academic study programs (BFK, TRFR). The motor subscale included 8 items, the kinetotherapeutic subscale included 16 items, and the psychological subscale included 10 items. The evaluation of the QBTAP questionnaire 5-point Likert scale. The three evaluated programs were: recovery aquagym (AG), aquatic ludotherapy (ALT) and therapeutic swimming (TS). Results The results and conclusion sections should highlight the main findings succinctly. For example: "The QBTAP showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha >0.9) across all subscales and programs, with significant differences identified between the three programs (p < 0.05). Conclusion The study concludes that aquagym most effectively improves motor capacity, aquatic ludotherapy enhances psychological function, and therapeutic swimming is most beneficial for recovery and rehabilitation.

Abstract
Although the benefits of physical activity (PA) on mental well-being are well established, the vulnerability of women during pregnancy and the postpartum period poses challenges in studying the effects of PA on postpartum depression (PPD). This study investigated the association between total and domain-specific PA levels during pregnancy and postpartum depressive symptoms. The study included 105 healthy pregnant women whose PA status was evaluated by the Serbian version of the Physical Activity Questionnaire during Pregnancy (PPAQ-SRB) and their postpartum mental health by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore the independent relationship between PPAQ-SRB scores and the prediction of the PPD symptom occurrence. Our analysis revealed that the development of PPD symptomatology was associated with a lower "Total PPAQ-SRB score" (odds ratio (OR) 0.81; 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.70-0.93]; p=0.03) and "Total Activity score" (OR 0.82; 95% CI [0.71-0.93]; p=0.03) as well as lower scores of light-intensity PA (OR 0.81; 95% CI [0.69-0.96]; p=0.013), moderate-intensity PA (OR 0.82; 95% CI [0.71-0.94]; p=0.005), "Household/care" (OR 0.85; 95% CI [0.73-0.98]; p=0.028), and "Occupational" activities (OR 0.80; 95% CI [0.78-0.95]; p=0.012). Lower levels of light-to-moderate-intensity household and occupational activities appeared to increase the risk of PPD, indicating the importance of circumstances under which PA is performed. Hence, our findings indicate that PA during pregnancy can mitigate mood disorders in postpartum mothers. Moreover, reduced participation in light-to-moderate-intensity household and occupational activities seemed to increase the risk of PPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perinatal depression can have profound impacts on both families and society. Exercise therapy is gradually becoming a widely used adjunct treatment for perinatal depression. Some studies have already focused on the relationship between physical activity and perinatal depression (PND). However, there is currently a lack of systematic and comprehensive evidence to address the crucial question of making optimal choices among different forms of physical activity. This study aims to compare and rank different physical activity intervention strategies and identify the most effective one for perinatal depression. METHODS Four databases, namely PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science, were searched for randomized controlled trials assessing the impact of physical activity interventions on perinatal depression. The search covered the period from the inception of the databases until May 2024. Two researchers independently conducted literature screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. Network meta-analysis was performed using Stata 15.1. RESULTS A total of 48 studies were included in the analysis. The results indicate that relaxation therapy has the most effective outcome in reducing perinatal depression (SUCRA = 99.4%). Following that is mind-body exercise (SUCRA = 80.6%). Traditional aerobics and aquatic sports were also effective interventions (SUCRA = 70.9% and 67.1%, respectively). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that integrated mental and physical (MAP) training such as relaxation therapy and mind-body exercise show better performance in reducing perinatal depression. Additionally, while exercise has proven to be effective, the challenge lies in finding ways to encourage people to maintain a consistent exercise routine. Abstract
There is evidence that demonstrates the benefits of practicing physical activity/exercise for the mother after childbirth. However, this postpartum period (PP) is often a missed opportunity in a lifetime for women to start or resume physical exercise and get the great benefits that it can bring them. The objective of this article was to analyze the benefits of physical exercise during PP; the prescription of physical exercise; recommendations on when to resume your practice; barriers and facilitators; physical exercise during breastfeeding; as well as its role in the most frequent illnesses and discomforts in this period, always keeping in mind that the work of the primary care doctor is essential to motivate and encourage women to perform physical exercise in the PP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of perinatal depression is increasing and has become a global public health problem to be addressed. OBJECTIVE To explore the prevention and treatment effects of different exercise methods on perinatal depression. METHODS A meta-analysis was conducted by searching databases for published "exercise interventions for perinatal depression "related randomized controlled trials, up to July 20, 2022. RESULTS 48 randomized controlled trials were included, with a total of 5282 pregnant women. (1) Exercise prevention of prenatal depression has a low effective stress intervention effect, ranking from high to low as yoga, aerobic+resistance. (2) Exercise therapy for prenatal depression has a significant intervention effect, followed by gymnastics, pelvic floor muscle training, aerobic exercise, aerobic+resistance, and yoga. (3) Exercise prevention of postpartum depression has a low effective intervention effect, followed by yoga, aerobic exercise, aerobic+resistance, and gymnastics. (4) Exercise has a moderate equivalent stress intervention effect on treating postpartum depression, followed by aerobic exercise, water exercise, yoga, fertility dance, and stroller walking. LIMITATIONS Due to the small number of included literature on single exercise modalities, and maternity is a special population, most of the trial procedures included in the text were not blinded, which has a certain risk of bias and affects the accuracy of the Meta-analysis results. CONCLUSIONS The therapeutic effect of exercise in the prevention and treatment of perinatal depression is superior to the preventive effect, and the effect of prenatal prevention and treatment is better than that of postpartum, with a moderate effect.

Objective: to describe the physical activity patterns of a cohort comprised by pregnant women from our environment and to explore its association with weight gain in each of the trimesters of pregnancy. Methods: a descriptive and longitudinal study conducted with a sample of 151 women. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to assess physical activity during pregnancy based on volume, intensity and setting where it is performed. Different multiple linear regression models were performed to analyze the association between physical activity and gestational weight gain Results: physical activity decreased during pregnancy, both in terms of time and intensity. Pre-gestational Body Mass Index was the main factor associated with lower weight gain throughout pregnancy. The influence of physical activity on gestational weight gain was limited to the third trimester of pregnancy, where an inverse association was observed between both variables. Conclusion: the results of this study show an important reduction in physical activity during pregnancy and suggest that it exerts a limited influence on gestational weight gain

Abstract
Objetivo: descrever os padrões de atividade física de uma coorte de gestantes em nosso meio e explorar sua associação com o ganho de peso em cada um dos trimestres de gestação. Método: estudo descritivo longitudinal com uma amostra de 151 mulheres. O Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física foi utilizado para avaliar a atividade física durante a gestação de acordo com o volume, intensidade e escopo do desempenho. Diferentes modelos de regressão linear múltipla foram utilizados para analisar a associação entre atividade física e ganho de peso gestacional. Resultados: a atividade física diminuiu durante a gestação, tanto em tempo quanto em intensidade. O índice de massa corporal pré-gestacional foi o principal fator associado ao menor ganho de peso ao longo da gestação. A influência da atividade física no ganho de peso gestacional limitou-se ao terceiro trimestre de gestação, no qual foi observada associação inversa entre ambas as variáveis. Conclusão: os resultados deste estudo mostram uma diminuição significativa da atividade física no momento da gravidez e sugerem uma influência limitada desta no ganho de peso gestacional.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aerobic exercise is widely recognized for improving mental health and reducing negative emotions, including anxiety. However, research on its role in preventing and treating postpartum depression (PPD) has yielded inconsistent results. Some studies show positive effects on PPD symptoms, while others find limited impact, suggesting various factors at play, such as exercise type, intensity, and individual differences. To address this gap, our study aims to comprehensively gather evidence on the preventive and therapeutic effects of aerobic exercise for PPD. We'll focus on differences in exercise program design and implementation, exploring how these factors impact intervention outcomes. By identifying effective exercise approaches, we aim to provide more comprehensive exercise prescription recommendations for this vulnerable population. METHODS We conducted a quantitative systematic review of the study in 5 representative databases for the effect of aerobic exercise on PPD. Meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were performed with Review-Manager.5.4 and Stata.16.0 software, respectively. This study has been registered on the official Prospero website, and the registration code is CRD42023398221. RESULTS Twenty-six studies with 2,867 participants were eventually included and the efficacy of aerobic exercise in preventing and treating postpartum depression is significant compared to standard care. (MD = -1.90; 95%CL: -2.58 to -1.21; I2 = 86%). Subgroup analysis suggests that the intervention objective (prevention vs. treatment) of exercise could potentially be a source of heterogeneity in this study, as the "Test for subgroup difference" revealed the presence of significant distinctions (p = 0.02<0.05). The "Test for subgroup difference" yielded non-significant results for both the supervised vs. unsupervised subgroup comparison (p = 0.55 > 0.05) and the individual vs. team subgroup comparison (p = 0.78 > 0.05). Nonetheless, when assessing their effect sizes [Subtotal (95%CL)], the supervised exercise group [-1.66 (-2.48, -0.85)] exhibited a slightly better performance than the unsupervised exercise group [-1.37 (-1.86, -0.88)], while the team exercise group [-1.43 (-1.94, -0.93)] slightly outperformed the individual exercise group [-1.28 (-2.23, -0.33)]. Network meta-analysis indicated that moderate intensity (35~45 min) group demonstrated a more pronounced intervention effect compared to low intensity (50~60 min) group [-2.63 (-4.05, -1.21)] and high intensity (20~30 min) group [-2.96 (-4.51, -1.41)], while the 3~4 times/week group had a more significant intervention effect compared to 1~2 times/week groups [-2.91 (-3.99, -1.83)] and 5~6 times/week groups [-3.28 (-4.75, -1.81)]. No significant differences were observed in pairwise comparisons of intervention effects among the five common types of aerobic exercises. (95%CL including 0). The Surface Under the Cumulative Ranking curve (SUCRA) results align with the findings mentioned above and will not be reiterated here. CONCLUSION The efficacy of aerobic exercise in preventing and treating postpartum depression is significant compared to standard care, with a greater emphasis on prevention. The optimal prescribed exercise volume for intervention comprises a frequency of 3~4 exercise sessions per week, moderate intensity (35~45 minutes). Currently, several uncharted internal factors influence the optimal intervention effect of aerobic exercise, such as the potential enhancement brought by team-based and supervised exercise. Given the absence of significant differences in certain results and the limitations of the study, it is essential to exercise caution when interpreting the outcomes. Further research is needed in the future to provide a more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No meta-analysis has analyzed the effect of physical activity level, period of physical activity intervention, and duration of intervention, on perinatal depression. This study was to evaluate the impact of physical activity intensity, dose, period, and duration on perinatal depression. METHODS The literature was searched via the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. Weighted mean difference (WMD) or the risk ratio (RR) was used as the effect indicator, and the effect size was represented by the 95 % confidence interval (CI). Subgroup analysis based on the perinatal stage, physical activity intensity, physical activity equivalent, and intervention duration was performed. RESULTS Totally, 35 studies including 5084 women were included. Physical activity could reduce the incidence and severity of depression in perinatal women. Among depressed women with prenatal depression, low-intensity physical activity, with metabolic equivalents (METs)-min/week being <450, was associated with lower levels of depression. In the general population, the risk of postpartum depression was lower in the physical activity group when the duration of intervention was ≥12 weeks, being II, III stage, and ≥450 METs-min/week. Both low and moderate-intensity physical activity were beneficial to an improved depression severity among depressed women with postpartum depression, and moderate exercise intervention could decrease the risk of postpartum depression in general pregnant women. LIMITATIONS Different types of physical activities may affect the effectiveness of interventions. CONCLUSION Our study indicated physical activity specifically targeted at pregnant women could reduce depression risk and severity.

Abstract
It is well established that exercise can improve depressive symptoms in the general population; however, it is not clear if these benefits are also seen in pregnancy. This review aimed to synthesize the evidence that examines whether exercise during pregnancy impacts depressive and associated symptoms (e.g. anxiety) during the perinatal period. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and reporting criteria; literature was searched using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science database engines. Clinical trials published in English evaluating the effects of a defined exercise protocol during pregnancy on depressive and/or anxiety symptoms during the perinatal period were included. Studies without a control group were excluded. Risk of bias was conducted by Cochrane assessment to appraise the quality of the included studies. Twenty-seven articles, between 1994 and 2019, were included. Of these, only 5 specifically recruited women with depression (n = 334), which all assessed a yoga-based intervention; 4 of these studies showed a statistically significant improvement in depressive and/or anxiety symptoms in the intervention group compared to baseline; however, 2 of these studies also showed an improvement in the control group. The remaining 22 studies used various exercise interventions in pregnant women (n = 4808) with 20 studies reporting that exercise during pregnancy has the ability to improve depressive and/or anxiety measures in the perinatal period compared to either baseline or control. The evidence suggests that exercise of various types in pregnancy can reduce depressive and/or anxiety symptoms in the perinatal period in otherwise healthy women. Specifically in women with antenatal depression, the incorporation of yoga in pregnancy can improve depressive/anxiety symptoms in the perinatal period; however, this is based on a small number of studies, and it is not clear whether this is superior to non-exercise controls. Further studies are needed to determine the potential therapeutic effects of exercise of various types during pregnancy on symptoms of antenatal depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this review were to 1) summarise the breadth and types of research regarding the impact of aquatic exercise on mental health completed to date, 2) provide a clear indication of the intervention type, volume, measurement tools used, and populations best served in relation to this activity and its effectiveness and 3) to identify domains within the literature that can be developed so recommendations can be made for future investigations. METHOD A scoping review was performed under the PRISMA guidelines. A systematic search of Pubmed, SPORTDiscus, PsycInfo and Google Scholar databases was conducted. Studies observing the effect of aquatic exercises on mental health and related parameters were considered for inclusion. The data from the selected studies were then extracted and analysed methodically. PRIMARY CONDITIONS MEASURED Depression, anxiety, mood, self-esteem, and psychological well-being were the primary mental states for which findings could be clearly extracted. RESULTS Of the 1635 articles that resulted from the search, 23 articles met all inclusion criteria. Of these, 12 were randomised controlled trials. Cumulatively, the findings of this review trend towards aquatic exercise being effective in generating positive changes in mental health. CONCLUSION Aquatic exercise, specifically winter swimming, leisure swimming, competitive swimming and aquatic aerobics, can be a promising conservative therapy for mental health management. However, it is recommended that further research be conducted to solidify these findings and establish the long-term effects of this intervention on mental health.

Current scientific evidence supports the recommendation to initiate or continue physical exercise in healthy pregnant women. Group exercise programs have positive effects on improving health, well-being, and social support. In 2015, a systematic review was provided to evaluate the evidence on the effectiveness of group exercise programs in improving pregnant women's and newborns' health outcomes and to assess the content of the programs. This review aims to update this knowledge between 2015 and 2020. The exercise program designs were analyzed with the Consensus of Exercise Reporting Template (CERT) model, the compliance with the current guidelines, and effectiveness in the maternal health and fitness parameters. Three databases were used to conduct literature searches. Thirty-one randomized control trials were selected for analysis. All studies followed a supervised group exercise program including aerobic, resistance, pelvic floor training, stretching, and relaxation sections. Group interventions during pregnancy improved health and fitness outcomes for the women and newborns, although some gaps were identified in the interventions. Multidisciplinary teams of exercise and health professionals should advise pregnant women that group exercise improves a wide range of health outcomes for them and their newborns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prenatal anxiety and depressive symptoms have significantly increased since the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic In addition, home confinement regulations have caused a drastic increase in time spent sedentary. Online group fitness classes may be an effective strategy that can increase maternal physical activity levels and improve mental health outcomes by providing an opportunity for social connectedness. The present study explores the experiences of pregnant women who participated in an online group exercise program during the pandemic and identifies relationships with maternal mental health and well-being. In addition, we present person-informed recommendations on how to improve the delivery of future online prenatal exercise programs. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with pregnant women (8-39 weeks of pregnancy) who participated in an online group exercise program, from March to October 2020 in Spain. A phenomenological approach was taken, and open-ended questions were asked to understand women's experiences throughout the pandemic and the role the online exercise classes may have had on their physical activity levels, mental health, and other health behaviours such as diet. A thematic analysis was performed to evaluate data. In addition, women completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and these data supplemented qualitative findings. RESULTS Twenty-four women were interviewed, and the anxiety scores were on average 32.23 ± 9.31, ranging from low to moderate levels. Thematic analysis revealed that women felt safe exercising from home, an increased availability of time to schedule a structured exercise class, and consequently an improvement in their adherence to the program and other behaviours (i.e., healthier diet). Women emphasized feeling connected to other pregnant women when they exercised online together, and overall, this had a positive effect on their mental well-being. Women suggested that future online exercise programs should include flexible options, detailed instructions and facilitation by a qualified exercise professional. CONCLUSION Pregnant women are receptive to online group exercise classes and expressed that they are an accessible option to accommodating physical activity during the pandemic. In addition, the online group environment provides an important sense of connectivity among pregnant women exercising together and this may mitigate the detrimental effect of COVID-19 on maternal mental health.

Does Prenatal Physical Activity Affect the Occurrence of Postnatal Anxiety and Depression? Longitudinal Study. Abstract
The aim of the foregoing study was to assess whether physical activity during pregnancy affects the occurrence of anxiety and depression during pregnancy, postpartum and 6 months following childbirth. This study tried to answer the following questions: How was the incidence of depression and anxiety different in the pre- and postpartum periods? What intensity level of physical activity protects against the symptoms of anxiety and depression? Does the time spent engaged in sedentary activities and MVPA affect the occurrence of depression and anxiety before and after childbirth? The study group under analysis consisted of 187 women aged 19–41 years. The research was conducted between April 2016 and November 2020. The study was divided into four stages: T0—qualification to participate in the study; T1—medical history acquisition, consisting of a short questionnaire and two long questionnaires (the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7)), as well as an assessment of 7-day physical activity using Actigraph accelerometers during the pregnancy; T2—the completion of the EPDS and GAD-7 questionnaires after the birth; T3—the completion of the EPDS and GAD-7 questionnaire 6 months after giving birth. The obtained results were statistically processed in the Statistica 13.3 software package. A significance level of p < 0.05 was assumed. The highest percentage of depression occurred immediately after the delivery, followed by 6 months after delivery, and the smallest number of women suffered from depression before the birth (p < 0.001). The analysis of correlations of physical activity with anxiety symptoms did not show significant correlations. However, the situation is different in the case of depression symptoms. Women taking fewer steps before delivery showed a greater tendency to develop depressive symptoms before, immediately after and 6 months after the delivery (p < 0.001). Women who were less active (took fewer steps per day, spent less time in moderate-to-vigorous physical (MVPA) activities or spent more time being sedentary) showed symptoms of depression on the EPDS scale. It appeared that those with severe anxiety symptoms had the highest sedentary time scores before the delivery (p = 0.020). Reduced physical activity promotes the onset of postnatal depression, while being active reduces this risk. Interestingly, even light physical activity “protects” against the occurrence of depression and is better than sedentary activities. Such clear conclusions cannot be drawn in relation to anxiety symptoms. Sedentary behaviour may promote anxiety symptoms immediately after childbirth, but this study should be continued in order to confirm it during other time periods.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess evidence on the effects of aquatic exercise in pregnant women. The search included the following databases: Medline-PubMed, Web of science, PEDro, Scopus and SPORTDiscus databases. Seventeen randomized controlled trials were included (n = 2439, age 20–39 years; 31.30 ± 1.30 years). The systematic review carried out has indicated that aquatic exercise in pregnant women appears to have positive effects on preventing excessive maternal weight gain, improving maternal body image, as well as promoting healthy behavior, decreasing medical leave due to lower back pain during pregnancy, preventing gestational depression by improving maternal glucose tolerance levels, and reducing O’Sullivan test values. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database was used to evaluate the quality of the methodology of the selected studies, which were found to present an average methodological quality (PEDro scale: 5.05 points). Meta-analysis showed that aquatic exercise in pregnant women appears to have positive effects in the prevention of excessive maternal weight gain (mean difference −1.66 kg, 95% CI −2.67 to −0.66) and also to reduce birth weight mean differences (−89.13 g, 95% CI −143.18 to −35.08). The practice of aquatic exercise is appropriate throughout pregnancy. However, more research is needed to build more solid knowledge on the benefits of aquatic physical exercise on physical fitness (endurance, flexibility, agility and strength).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) is considered a favorable preventive intervention for postpartum depression (PPD), but evidence defining a corresponding dose-response relationship is lacking. This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the protective effects of PA on PPD and define a potential dose-response relationship between them. METHODS PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from 1968 to May 2022. Only randomized control trials (RCTs) and prospective studies were considered, and the PICOS tool was used to identify eligible articles based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Effect-size estimates were unified as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). We calculated the ORs and their 95% CI for studies that did not report them using the Practical Meta-Analysis Effect Size Calculator. RESULTS A total of 23 studies were eligible, including 14 RCTs and 9 prospective cohort studies. The overall analysis showed a statistically significant positive association between PA and PPD prevention (adjusted OR = 0.73; 95% CI: 0.61-0.87; P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses indicated that studies conducted in Europe demonstrated a significant correlation between PA and reduced PPD risk (adjusted OR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.76-0.95, P = 0.004). Concerning PA type, sports activity was associated with relieving PPD symptoms (adjusted OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.78 to 1.00, P < 0.001), while work (adjusted OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.37-2.97, P = 0.065) and household activities (adjusted OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 0.89-1.52, P = 0.986) contributed to a greater risk of PPD. Our dose-response analysis revealed a reverse J-shaped trend between ascending PA duration and PPD incidence. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis identified PA as a potential intervention to reduce the risk of PPD. The dose-response analysis revealed that at least 90 min of PA per week could efficiently decrease the risk of PPD. Abstract
Background: The global prevalence of postpartum depression is about 20%. This disease has serious consequences for women, their infants, and their families. The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of a moderate-intensity aerobic water exercise program on postpartum depression, sleep problems, and quality of life in women at one month after delivery. Methods: This was a multi-center, parallel, randomized, evaluator blinded, controlled trial in a primary care setting. Pregnant women (14–20 weeks gestational age) who had low risk of complications and were from five primary care centers in the area covered by the obstetrics unit of Son Llatzer Hospital (Mallorca, Spain) were invited to participate. A total of 320 pregnant women were randomly assigned to two groups, an intervention group (moderate aquatic aerobic exercise) and a control group (usual prenatal care). One month after birth, sleep quality (MOS sleep), quality of life (EQ-5D), and presence of anxiety or depression (EPDS) were recorded. Findings: Women in the intervention group were less likely to report anxiety or depression on the EQ5D (11.5% vs. 22.7%; p < 0.05) and had a lower mean EPDS score (6.1 ± 1.9 vs. 6.8 ± 2.4, p < 0.010). The two groups had no significant differences in other outcomes, maternal adverse events, and indicators of the newborn status. Conclusion: Moderate-intensity aquatic exercise during pregnancy decreased postpartum anxiety and depressive symptoms in mothers and was safe for mothers and their newborns.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Counseling and active behavioral interventions to limit excess gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy may improve health outcomes for women and infants. The 2009 National Academy of Medicine (NAM; formerly the Institute of Medicine) recommendations for healthy GWG vary according to prepregnancy weight category. OBJECTIVE To review and synthesize the evidence on benefits and harms of behavioral interventions to promote healthy weight gain during pregnancy to inform the US Preventive Services Task Force recommendation. DATA SOURCES Ovid MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library to March 2020, with surveillance through February 2021. STUDY SELECTION Randomized clinical trials and nonrandomized controlled intervention studies focused on diet, exercise, and/or behavioral counseling interventions on GWG. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Independent data abstraction and study quality rating with dual review. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Gestational weight-related outcomes; maternal and infant morbidity and mortality; harms. RESULTS Sixty-eight studies (N = 25 789) were included. Sixty-seven studies evaluated interventions during pregnancy, and 1 evaluated an intervention prior to pregnancy. GWG interventions were associated with reductions in risk of gestational diabetes (43 trials, n = 19 752; relative risk [RR], 0.87 [95% CI, 0.79 to 0.95]; absolute risk difference [ARD], -1.6%) and emergency cesarean delivery (14 trials, n = 7520; RR, 0.85 [95% CI, 0.74 to 0.96]; ARD, -2.4%). There was no significant association between GWG interventions and risk of gestational hypertension, cesarean delivery, or preeclampsia. GWG interventions were associated with decreased risk of macrosomia (25 trials, n = 13 990; RR, 0.77 [95% CI, 0.65 to 0.92]; ARD, -1.9%) and large for gestational age (26 trials, n = 13 000; RR, 0.89 [95% CI, 0.80 to 0.99]; ARD, -1.3%) but were not associated with preterm birth. Intervention participants experienced reduced weight gain across all prepregnancy weight categories (55 trials, n = 20 090; pooled mean difference, -1.02 kg [95% CI, -1.30 to -0.75]) and demonstrated lower likelihood of GWG in excess of NAM recommendations (39 trials, n = 14 271; RR, 0.83 [95% CI, 0.77 to 0.89]; ARD, -7.6%). GWG interventions were associated with reduced postpartum weight retention at 12 months (10 trials, n = 3957; mean difference, -0.63 kg [95% CI, -1.44 to -0.01]). Data on harms were limited. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Counseling and active behavioral interventions to limit GWG were associated with decreased risk of gestational diabetes, emergency cesarean delivery, macrosomia, and large for gestational age. GWG interventions were also associated with modest reductions in mean GWG and decreased likelihood of exceeding NAM recommendations for GWG.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW We review evidence for physical activity and yoga as interventions for depressed pregnant and postpartum women. RECENT FINDINGS Results from existing trials have generally indicated that physical activity and yoga interventions are acceptable to women during the perinatal period, and that these interventions can be effective in reducing depression. However, some studies have not found significant differences between intervention and control conditions. In addition, symptom improvements were not always maintained. The available research on physical activity and yoga as interventions for perinatal depression is encouraging with regard to feasibility, acceptability, patient safety, and preliminary efficacy. These interventions have the ability to reach a large number of women who may not engage in traditional treatment. Additional high quality, rigorous, randomized controlled trials are needed. Future research is also needed to examine the optimal dose of these interventions and how to best increase sustained engagement.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: During pregnancy and the postnatal period many changes occur in a woman's body, both in mental and physical spheres. The birth of a child and a new role-of a mother-can sometimes be associated with numerous negative emotions, uncertainty, fear, anxiety, disgust, depression, or sadness. In the puerperium period, the development of baby blues or postpartum depression may occur. Postpartum depression develops within one month of childbirth and may last up to one year. Depressive disorders that may develop in a young mother affect both her and the newborn's health. That is why it is so important to try to search for factors that could significantly reduce the likelihood of developing depression in this period. The study aims at assessing the relationship between physical activity during pregnancy and puerperium or in the postpartum and the development of postnatal depression. Materials and Methods: A review of the literature was carried out in the Medline-PubMed database. The search terms were "pregnancy" AND "physical activity AND postpartum depression". The study included only English-language publications published in the period 2000-2018. Results: A total of 216 references were found. After establishing the inclusion and exclusion criteria based on the analysis of titles and abstracts, 173 articles were excluded from the review. A total of 43 publications were read in full. Finally, 16 articles were included in the review. It was shown that regular physical activity during pregnancy, pregnancy, and puerperium, or in the postnatal period itself as compared to inactivity, reduces the risk of developing depression in pregnant women and after the birth of a child. Conclusions: Physical activity can be an essential factor in the prevention of depressive disorders of women in the postnatal period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of an aquatic physical exercise program performed during pregnancy on rate of intact perineum after childbirth. DESIGN Randomized clinical trial. SETTING Health centers in the metropolitan health district of Granada, Spain. PARTICIPANTS A total of 129 pregnant women (control group [CG] = 64; aquatic exercise group [EG] = 65). METHODS The intervention was an aquatic physical exercise program specifically designed for pregnant women (Study of Water Exercise During Pregnancy [SWEP] method). Participants were randomly assigned to the CG or EG by simple random sampling. Participants in the EG performed three sessions per week of physical exercises, which were led by the principal investigator. All participants received routine prenatal care. We evaluated status of the perineum after birth, including laceration and episiotomy rates. We also evaluated participants' weight, body mass index (BMI) in the first and third trimesters, parity, the administration of anesthesia, and birth weight of the neonate as potential confounding variables. RESULTS The women in the EG had a greater rate of intact perineum than those in the CG (odds ratio [OR] = 13.54, 95% confidence interval [CI] [2.75, 66.56]). After adjusting for infant birth weight, the effect of the intervention on intact perineum was an OR of 8.57 (95% CI [1.85, 39.68]. Maternal weight gain did not influence the odds of intact perineum (OR = 1.072, 95% CI [0.896, 1.283]). Women who previously gave birth and followed the SWEP method had an OR of 10.197 (95% CI [2.190, 47.476] for an intact perineum. The administration of anesthesia and previous pregnancy also were associated with intact perineum (OR = 6.68, 95% CI [1.21, 36.84] and OR = 5.42, 95% CI [1.64, 17.89] respectively. CONCLUSION The women who followed the SWEP method were significantly more likely to have intact perinea after childbirth.
