Abstract
Airborne fine-dust pollution poses a significant threat to both respiratory and skin health; however, the skin's wound-healing process in response to such exposure remains underexplored. Therefore, this study examined the effect of fine-dust-model compounds, specifically polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PM10-PAHs) and trace-metal-containing particles (PM10-Trace), on the wound-healing process using human skin equivalents reconstructed with collagen-based biomaterials and human skin cells. Our findings revealed that fine-dust exposure significantly delayed wound closure by 2-3 times compared with unexposed controls, impairing re-epithelialization. Live imaging of wound-healing dynamics revealed that trace-metal-containing particles had a more pronounced inhibitory effect than polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Furthermore, fine-dust exposure elevated protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR1) expression by up to 161%, indicating significant physiological disruption. Additionally, fine-dust exposure triggered inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to structural and functional damage in the reconstructed skin. These results provide critical insights into how airborne pollutants disrupt skin repair mechanisms and highlight the need for targeted strategies to mitigate their harmful effects.

Abstract
Vitiligo is a commonly acquired pigmentary disease characterized by the progressive destruction of melanocytes. The role of adipose tissue in vitiligo remains unclear. To investigate the role of adipose tissue in the pathogenesis of vitiligo, 50 patients newly diagnosed with vitiligo and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled, and fat mass and distribution using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and serum adipokine levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were assessed. The trunk and whole-body fat mass and the trunk/limb fat mass ratio were significantly higher in patients with vitiligo. Higher leptin and resistin levels and lower adiponectin levels were observed. Positive correlation of the trunk fat mass index with vitiligo area scoring index scores (r = 0.38, p = 0.0071) was found. Additionally, plasma adiponectin levels were negatively correlated with vitiligo disease activity scores (r = -0.307, p < 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the percentage of limb lean tissue mass, trunk/limb fat mass ratio, and serum adipokine levels achieved a high area under the curve score for distinguishing patients with vitiligo from healthy controls. In conclusion, the incidence of central obesity and adipokine dysregulation was higher in patients with vitiligo. The potential role of adipose tissue in the pathogenesis of vitiligo should be emphasized.

Abstract
Psoriasis (PsO) is a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin disease. It is a complex condition that is affected by environmental and hereditary variables. Numerous pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and even fungi, have been linked to PsO. One of the mechanisms that clears infections is autophagy. The mechanism by which a cell feeds itself is called autophagy by reusing cytoplasmic components in the lysosome. The autophagy-related (ATG) proteins are essential components of the system that control the strictly regulated process of autophagy. Among these 41 proteins, ATG5 is one that is required in order for autophagic vesicles to develop. This research aimed to compare ATG5 levels in serum among those suffering from psoriasis vulgaris and healthy controls. This cross-sectional research was carried out on 45 individuals with vulgaris psoriasis and 45 healthy, sex and age-matched control subjects. All participants underwent a clinical examination, a laboratory investigation, and a history taking, including lipid profiles and serum ATG5. The mean age of the control and PsO were 40.6 ± 9.6, and 43.7 ± 9.3 years respectively. The mean total PASI score was 13.9 ± 8.9, with a median of 11.7 (8.8). According to the PASI score, about 38% (n = 17) had mild disease (PASI < 10), and about 62% (n = 28) had moderate/severe disease (PASI ≥ 10). There was a significantly higher median (IQR) (25th-75th) ATG5 level in PsO 206 (97) (145-242) ng/ml than in the control 147 (98) (111-209) ng/ml (p = 0.002). An insignificant higher median level (IQR) was observed in PsO with mild disease 207(95) compared with those with moderate/severe disease 183(98.5) (p = 0.057). Dissimilarly, the median (IQR) ATG5 level was significantly lower in PsO individuals with metabolic syndrome 170(72) compared with those without 207(104) (p = 0.044). Four predictors were identified following sex and age adjustments, in the final linear regression model: PASI score, triglyceride, High-Density Lipoprotein, and presence of metabolic syndrome. There can be a connection between autophagy as measured by ATG5 and psoriasis vulgaris. ATG5 was elevated in the serum of individuals with psoriasis vulgaris. However, it decreased in patients with metabolic syndrome. No relation was found between serum ATG5 and PASI score. Psoriasis vulgaris patients may benefit from using an autophagy enhancer as a potential treatment target.

Abstract
Background In vitiligo, there is a significant decrease in melanocytes and melanin. The decrease in melanin causes oxidative stress, with a chance of causing metabolic syndrome. Hence, there is a need to look for metabolic syndrome in vitiligo. Aim and Objectives To estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in vitiligo patients and to evaluate the relationship between the severity and progression of vitiligo and metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 178 vitiligo cases and 178 controls who were age- and sex-matched. The type of vitiligo, stability by vitiligo disease activity score (VIDA), and severity by vitiligo area severity index (VASI) were noted. The waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting lipid profile, and fasting blood sugar were measured for cases and controls. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed based on Harmonization Asian criteria. Results The mean age in cases was 34.38 years, and in controls, it was 35.67 years. The majority were females in both cases (52.2%) and controls (55.6%). Most have a VIDA score of 2+ (41.6%). The mean VASI score was 2.54. The percentage of metabolic syndrome was higher in cases (36%) compared to controls (24.2%) (P = 0.015). The mean age was lower in vitiligo cases with metabolic syndrome (38.83 years) compared to controls with metabolic syndrome (43.14 years). Metabolic syndrome was more frequent in the vitiligo vulgaris type (48.9%) than in acral and segmental vitiligo. Metabolic syndrome was more common in patients with high VIDA (45%) and VASI (52.3%) scores compared to patients with low VIDA (25%) and VASI (27.3%) scores. Limitation It is a hospital-based study, so controls were not from the general population. Conclusion The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was higher in vitiligo patients compared to controls, and it was higher in patients with active and severe disease. Screening and close monitoring of vitiligo patients help in the early diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitiligo is the most common pigmentary disorder and is considered a chronic, cumulative, multifactorial disease. The crucial role of cytotoxic CD8+ T lymphocytes and the IFNγ/CXCL10 axis has been demonstrated in its pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical profile and immuno-inflammatory markers in patients with vitiligo in a reference medical center. METHODS Cross-sectional study in which all patients with vitiligo seen at the medical center the from 2019 to 2022 were evaluated, to outline the clinical profile. Moreover, cardiovascular risk biomarkers (neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and C-reactive protein levels) were measured, as well as cytokines and chemokines (TNFα, IFNγ, IL10, IL15 and CXCL10) in the serum of a subgroup of 30 patients. RESULTS There was a predominance of females, with a mean age of 43 years. Most were phototypes IV or V (71.3%), without comorbidities (77.55%), and without a family history of vitiligo (70.41%). Higher levels of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, C-reactive protein, and inflammatory cytokines/chemokines were documented in vitiligo patients when compared to the control group (non-significant). As relevant data, the highest values of CXCL10 were detected in patients with vitiligo versus controls, as well as in patients with disease of shorter duration (p<0.05). STUDY LIMITATIONS The number of assessed patients was small due to recruitment difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION The present data contribute to confirming the relevant role of the IFNγ/CXCL10 axis in the pathogenesis of vitiligo, highlighting CXCL10 as a possible activity marker.

Abstract
This study examines the pathological processes and conditions arising from an experimental modeling of II-IIIA degree thermal burns in laboratory animals. These conditions are characterized by skin structure defects, diminished skin functions, especially the barrier function, and damage to skin derivatives like hair follicles and sebaceous glands. We compared the effect of liposomes composed of soybean lecithin of 90% phosphatidylcholine content and liposomes composed of lecithin of 26% phosphatidylcholine content on the epidermis, dermis and its capillaries, hair follicles, and the sebaceous glands of the laboratory animals 24 h after experimental modeling of II-IIIA degree thermal skin burns. We discuss the dependency of liposome effects on the skin and its derivatives on the fatty acid composition of the lecithin used, with particular focus on phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidic acids, as well as oleic and linoleic acids.

Abstract
Cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions represent the most common manifestation of drug allergy seen in the clinic, with 25% of all adverse drug reactions appearing in the skin. The severity of cutaneous eruptions can vastly differ depending on the cellular mechanisms involved from a minor, self-resolving maculopapular rash to major, life-threatening pathologies such as the T-cell mediated bullous eruptions, i.e., Stevens Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis. It remains a significant question as to why these reactions are so frequently associated with the skin and what factors polarise these reactions towards more serious disease states. The barrier function which the skin performs means it is constantly subject to a barrage of danger signals, creating an environment that favors elicitation. Therefore, a critical question is what drives the expansion of cutaneous lymphocyte antigen positive, skin homing, T-cell sub-populations in draining lymph nodes. One answer could be the heterologous immunity hypothesis whereby tissue resident memory T-cells that express T-cell receptors (TCRs) for pathogen derived antigens cross-react with drug antigen. A significant amount of research has been conducted on skin immunity in the context of contact allergy and the role of tissue specific antigen presenting cells in presenting drug antigen to T-cells, but it is unclear how this relates to epitopes derived from circulation. Studies have shown that the skin is a metabolically active organ, capable of generating reactive drug metabolites. However, we know that drug antigens are displayed systemically so what factors permit tolerance in one part of the body, but reactivity in the skin. Most adverse drug reactions are mild, and skin eruptions tend to be visible to the patient, whereas minor organ injury such as transient transaminase elevation is often not apparent. Systemic hypersensitivity reactions tend to have early cutaneous manifestations, the progression of which is halted by early diagnosis and treatment. It is apparent that the preference for cutaneous involvement of drug hypersensitivity reactions is multi-faceted, therefore this review aims to abridge the findings from literature on the current state of the field and provide insight into the cellular and metabolic mechanisms which may contribute to severe cutaneous adverse reactions.

Abstract
Background There is evidence to support that vitiligo is linked to metabolic syndrome (MS), confirming its systemic nature. However, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms remain unknown. Objectives To reveal the possible association of MS with vitiligo. We also attempted to study the connection between some inflammatory markers and MS in vitiligo patients to evaluate their utility in predicting MS risk. Materials and Methods The study included 100 vitiligo patients with an age range between 18 to 60 years and 100 controls with matched age, gender, and body mass index. All subjects were tested for MS components. Serum visceral adipose tissue-derived serine protease inhibitor (vaspin), fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4), vascular adhesion protein 1 (VAP-1), chitinase-3-like protein 1 (YKL-40), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were also measured. Results Regarding MS, it was observed in 22.0% of vitiligo patients and 2.0% of control subjects (P < 0.001). Serum FABP4, VAP-1, YKL-40, and hs-CRP concentrations were higher in patients than in the control group (P < 0.05 each), and their levels showed high sensitivity and specificity to differentiate MS when using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC). Levels of these markers, except serum vaspin, were significantly positively correlated with lipid profile markers (except high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) and fasting blood glucose levels (P < 0.05 each). Conclusion MS was more common in vitiligo patients. The levels of the biomarkers studied were significantly higher in vitiligo patients. Furthermore, their levels accurately predicted MS in vitiligo patients. According to current research, these markers may be useful in assessing MS risk in vitiligo patients. Extensive research, however, is required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sebum-based metabolomics (a subset of "sebomics") is a developing field that involves the sampling, identification, and quantification of metabolites found in human sebum. Sebum is a lipid-rich oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands onto the skin surface for skin homeostasis, lubrication, thermoregulation, and environmental protection. Interest in sebomics has grown over the last decade due to its potential for rapid analysis following non-invasive sampling for a range of clinical and environmental applications. OBJECTIVES To provide an overview of various sebum sampling techniques with their associated challenges. To evaluate applications of sebum for clinical research, drug monitoring, and human biomonitoring. To provide a commentary of the opportunities of using sebum as a diagnostic biofluid in the future. METHODS Bibliometric analyses of selected keywords regarding skin surface analysis using the Scopus search engine from 1960 to 2022 was performed on 12th January 2023. The published literature was compartmentalised based on what the work contributed to in the following areas: the understanding about sebum, its composition, the analytical technologies used, or the purpose of use of sebum. The findings were summarised in this review. RESULTS Historically, about 15 methods of sampling have been used for sebum collection. The sample preparation approaches vary depending on the analytes of interest and are summarised. The use of sebum is not limited to just skin diseases or drug monitoring but also demonstrated for other systemic disease. Most of the work carried out for untargeted analysis of metabolites associated with sebum has been in the recent two decades. CONCLUSION Sebum has a huge potential beyond skin research and understanding how one's physiological state affects or reflects on the skin metabolome via the sebaceous glands itself or by interactions with sebaceous secretion, will open doors for simpler biomonitoring. Sebum acts as a sink to environmental metabolites and has applications awaiting to be explored, such as biosecurity, cross-border migration, localised exposure to harmful substances, and high-throughput population screening. These applications will be possible with rapid advances in volatile headspace and lipidomics method development as well as the ability of the metabolomics community to annotate unknown species better. A key issue with skin surface analysis that remains unsolved is attributing the source of the metabolites found on the skin surface before meaningful biological interpretation.

Abstract
This paper focuses on a chemical analysis of human scent samples that were obtained from cartridge cases after being fired and their comparison with scent samples collected under laboratory conditions. Scent samples were analyzed by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with the time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The results obtained from the chemical analyzes confirmed the desired stability of the human scent evidence and outlined the possible application for forensic purposes. The qualitative results of the study converge with the findings of previous studies on the composition of human scent and the chemical composition of human fingerprints. Furthermore, statistical analyzes were performed employing similarity algorithms such as Pearson's and Spearman's correlations, or Kendall's tau. The resulting comparison of the scent samples secured on fired cartridge cases compared with those samples collected under laboratory conditions yielded ten out of ten correct identifications of the scent inflictor.

Abstract
Introduction Acne vulgaris is an androgen-dependent disorder with excessive sebum production and proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multisystem disorder that increases the risk of diabetes mellitus, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to analyze the association of MetS with acne vulgaris. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 65 cases of acne vulgaris and 65 age and sex-matched controls. We used the system provided by the Indian authors for grading acne according to the clinical severity. In addition, the criteria updated according to the joint consensus of 2009 were employed for the diagnosis of MetS. Results On clinical examination, grade 2 was the most prevalent grade of acne. We observed an increased incidence of abnormal waist circumference, triglyceride, HDL, and fasting blood glucose among the cases (p<0.05). Consequently, an increased occurrence of MetS was observed in the case group (p=0.011). While comparing the mean values of the parameters, we noted a significant difference in terms of waist circumference and HDL values. An increased mean value of waist circumference was noted in the case group while an increased mean value of HDL was reported from the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion Patients with acne vulgaris have a greater chance of developing MetS. Hence, an in-depth examination of clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical parameters that may lead to the development of MetS is necessary.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome (MetS) has become a global crisis and is believed to affect almost one-quarter of the world's population. Its prevalence has been rising, especially in the younger age group. The interactions of the skin and MetS are myriad. Physiological functions of the skin may confer a protective role, whereas cutaneous diseases may play the role of MetS initiator or amplifier. Cutaneous signs may be some of the earliest manifestations of insulin resistance, the basic pathophysiology behind MetS. Skin changes are also prominent in type 2 diabetes mellitus, the consequence of MetS. Drugs used in dermatological disorders can lead to metabolic dysfunction. Awareness about the risk factors and early lifestyle interventions can help delay or even prevent the life-threatening complications of this syndrome. Dermatologists are in a unique position to predict and prevent MetS or its complications, a long time before the patient visits a physician for systemic problems. To write this review, an internet search was made focusing on articles on skin problems associated with MetS and its components, its risk factors, pathogenesis, and ways to prevent it. Information relevant to dermatological practice was compiled.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MeTS) is a well-known health-related problem with several end-organ damages and the resulted side effects such as rising in the blood glucose and lipid and blood pressure. Although MeTS might show several skin symptoms such as acanthosis nigricans, skin tags, acne, and androgenic alopecia, it could also be implicated in the pathophysiology of numerous dermatologic disorders. Furthermore, some dermatologic drugs might be implicated in the incidence or exacerbation of MeTS. Consequently, MeTS and skin problem could interfere closely with each other and each one could predispose the patient to the other one and vice versa. Remembering these close relationships help us to have better therapeutic choices regarding each inflammatory skin conditions. Moreover, some of the skin symptoms should be followed cautiously to define the underlying MeTS.

Abstract
Transdermal drug delivery systems have become an intriguing research topic in pharmaceutical technology area and one of the most frequently developed pharmaceutical products in global market. The use of these systems can overcome associated drawbacks of other delivery routes, such as oral and parenteral. The authors will review current trends, and future applications of transdermal technologies, with specific focus on providing a comprehensive understanding of transdermal drug delivery systems and enhancement strategies. This article will initially discuss each transdermal enhancement method used in the development of first-generation transdermal products. These methods include drug/vehicle interactions, vesicles and particles, stratum corneum modification, energy-driven methods and stratum corneum bypassing techniques. Through suitable design and implementation of active stratum corneum bypassing methods, notably microneedle technology, transdermal delivery systems have been shown to deliver both low and high molecular weight drugs. Microneedle technology platforms have proven themselves to be more versatile than other transdermal systems with opportunities for intradermal delivery of drugs/biotherapeutics and therapeutic drug monitoring. These have shown that microneedles have been a prospective strategy for improving transdermal delivery systems.

Abstract
Purpose Psoriasis vulgaris, one of the most prevalent chronic inflammatory skin diseases, is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Autophagy, an intracellular degradation system is essential for cell survival and differentiation, and its dysfunction may contribute to metabolic diseases. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 38 psoriasis vulgaris patients and 16 healthy control subjects to 1) Assess immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3); 2) Evaluate the relationship between Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) score, and LC3 expression. Patients and Methods PASI score was evaluated for all psoriasis patients. Lipid profile, blood sugar, and CRP were done for all patients and controls. A punch biopsy was taken from lesional and perilesional skin of psoriasis patients and normal skin of the controls. Tissue sections were prepared. IHC LC3 staining was done and evaluated. Results LC3 was nearly absent, in the epidermis of the lesional skin of psoriasis while it was strong among control (p=0.001). LC3 expression in the lesional skin of psoriasis vulgaris was lower than its expression in perilesional (p=0.001). However, LC3 expression was not significantly changed with PASI or the presence/absence of MetS. Conclusion A potential link between psoriasis vulgaris and autophagy as assessed by LC3 could be present. LC3 was down-regulated in psoriasis lesions than in normal skin. However, its expression did not change with PASI or MetS. An autophagy enhancer might be used as a possible therapeutic target in psoriasis vulgaris patients.

Abstract
The obesity epidemic is a costly public health crisis that is not improving. In addition to the stigma and discomfort associated with carrying extra weight (at the expense of range of movement), obesity also goes hand-in-hand with co-morbidities like fatty liver disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk of some forms of cancer. Currently there are no long-lasting treatments for obesity other than diet and exercise, which are not feasible for many populations that may not be equipped with the resources and/or support needed to lead a healthy lifestyle. Although there have been some pharmacological breakthroughs for treating obesity, each FDA-approved drug comes with unpleasant side-effects that make adherence unlikely. As a result, alternate approaches are necessary. In this review, we outline the relationship between skin lipid metabolism and whole-body glucose and lipid metabolism. Specifically, by summarizing studies that employed mice that were genetically modified to interrupt lipid metabolism in the skin. As a result, we propose that skin might be an overlooked, but viable target for combating obesity.

Abstract
Nevirapine (NVP) therapy is associated with a high risk of serious liver injury and skin rash. Treatment of Brown Norway rats with NVP causes an immune-mediated skin rash. Even though NVP does not cause serious liver injury in wildtype animals, incubation of hepatocytes with NVP leads to the release of presumably danger-associated molecular pattern molecules (DAMPs), which activate macrophages. In this study, we examined the liver biopsies of Brown Norway rats treated with NVP to determine the histologic correlate to the release of DAMPs by hepatocytes. In vivo, debris from necrotic hepatocytes and endothelial cells were present in the liver sinusoids, a condition that can trigger an immune response. In addition to mitochondrial, hepatocytic, and endothelial damage, the drug induced large hepatocytic inclusions composed of lipid droplets surrounded by concentric whorls of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) cisternae-lipid-SER (LSER) inclusions, which were deposited in the sinusoids. NVP is lipid soluble, and these LSER inclusions may be sinks of NVP or its metabolites. LSERs are deposited in the blood stream where they may be picked up by lymph nodes and contribute to initiation of an immune response leading to serious liver injury or skin rash. LSERs migration from liver to the blood stream may signify a novel mechanism of drug exocytosis.

Abstract
There is ongoing scientific interest regarding comorbidities associated with the metabolic syndrome (MeTS). MeTS comprises a combination of parameters that predispose individuals to the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Three or more of the following criteria are necessary: fasting glucose > 110 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/l), hypertriglyceridemia > 150 mg/dl (1.7 mmol/l), HDL levels < 40 mg/dl (men)/< 50 mg/dl (women), blood pressure > 130/85 mmHg, waist circumference (values for Mediterranean populations > 94 cm (men)/> 89 cm (women). In this review we attempted to summarize relevant data by searching dermatological literature regarding associations between various skin conditions and MeTS. A multitude of studies was retrieved and a further goal of the present article is to present plausible mechanistic connections. The severity of skin conditions like psoriasis has been linked with MeTS. Parameters of MeTS like insulin resistance are present in patients with early onset androgenic alopecia, hidradenitis suppurativa acne and rosacea. Since MeTS can lead to CVD and type 2 diabetes early detection of patients would be very important. Also therapeutic intervention on MeTS could lead to improvement on the severity of skin conditions. This reciprocal relationship between skin diseases and MeTS in our opinion holds great interest for further investigation.

Abstract
Introduction There are a few studies showing an increased risk of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and oxidative stress in patients with vitiligo. Aim To investigate whether systemic inflammation is increased in vitiligo patients in a case-control study design. Material and methods Nonsegmental vitiligo patients who had been followed at the outpatient dermatology clinic of a university-affiliated teaching hospital, and healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Patients who were receiving systemic treatments and having a systemic disease such as diabetes mellitus and thyroiditis were excluded. Demographic features were recorded and peripheral blood samples were taken from all participants to study serum whole blood count, creatinine, and C-reactive protein (CRP). Results Fifty patients with localized vitiligo, 43 patients with generalized vitiligo, and 50 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and serum CRP levels were significantly higher in patients who have generalized vitiligo than those with localized vitiligo and healthy controls. However, there was no significant difference regarding neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and CRP between localized vitiligo and control groups. Conclusions Patients with generalized vitiligo seem to have increased systemic inflammation compared with localized vitiligo and control subjects in our cohort. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in the literature showing increased NLR values in generalized vitiligo patients. Further studies with cardiovascular disease markers are required to elicit this association better.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome represents an important association of cutaneous maladies with cardiovascular illnesses. Chronic inflammation, shared risk factors (ie, smoking and alcohol consumption), treatment (ie, immunosuppressive agents and drugs that alter the lipid profile), and shared genetic risk loci have been proposed to the cause metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular morbidity of autoimmune diseases. There are many possible inflammatory mediators that are suggested to play a role in insulin resistance pathogenesis, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, leptin, and adiponectin. These mediators are also abnormal in autoimmune skin disorders. We discuss several autoimmune skin diseases, connective tissue diseases, bullous diseases, vitiligo, psoriasis, lichen planus, chronic urticaria, and atopic dermatitis.

Abstract
Background: Inflammatory and immune processes can be triggered in vitiligo due to a decreased number of melanocytes and their anti-inflammatory effects. Because of the systemic nature of vitiligo, metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance and lipid profile disturbances as well as skin involvement may be observed in vitiligo. Aims: To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and vitiligo. Study Design: Case-control study. Methods: The demographic, clinical and laboratory features in the subjects were compared according to presence of vitiligo and metabolic syndrome [patients (n=63) vs. gender-age matched controls (n=65) and metabolic syndrome positive (n=38) vs. negative (n=90)]. A logistic regression analysis was also used. Results: We identified metabolic syndrome in 24 (38.1%) subjects with vitiligo and 14 (21.5%) subjects without vitiligo (p=0.04). Active vitiligo, segmental vitiligo, an increased duration of vitiligo and an increased percentage in the affected body surface area were determined to be independent predictors of metabolic syndrome [activity of vitiligo: p=0.012, OR (95% CI)=64.4 (2.5-1672); type of vitiligo: p=0.007, OR (95% CI)=215.1 (4.3-10725.8); duration of vitiligo: p=0.03, OR (95% CI)=1.4 (1.1-2.0); percentage of affected body surface area: p=0.07, OR (95% CI)=1.2 (0.98-1.5)]. Conclusion: The risk of developing metabolic syndrome is increased in patients with vitiligo. The poor clinical features of vitiligo, such as active, extended and segmental vitiligo with an increased duration of time, are independent predictors for developing metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Human sweat is a complex biofluid of interest to diverse scientific fields. Metabolomics analysis of sweat promises to improve screening, diagnosis and self-monitoring of numerous conditions through new applications and greater personalisation of medical interventions. Before these applications can be fully developed, existing methods for the collection, handling, processing and storage of human sweat need to be revised. This review presents a cross-disciplinary overview of the origins, composition, physical characteristics and functional roles of human sweat, and explores the factors involved in standardising sweat collection for metabolomics analysis. METHODS A literature review of human sweat analysis over the past 10 years (2006-2016) was performed to identify studies with metabolomics or similarly applicable 'omics' analysis. These studies were reviewed with attention to sweat induction and sampling techniques, timing of sweat collection, sweat storage conditions, laboratory derivation, processing and analytical platforms. RESULTS Comparative analysis of 20 studies revealed numerous factors that can significantly impact the validity, reliability and reproducibility of sweat analysis including: anatomical site of sweat sampling, skin integrity and preparation; temperature and humidity at the sweat collection sites; timing and nature of sweat collection; metabolic quenching; transport and storage; qualitative and quantitative measurements of the skin microbiota at sweat collection sites; and individual variables such as diet, emotional state, metabolic conditions, pharmaceutical, recreational drug and supplement use. CONCLUSION Further development of standard operating protocols for human sweat collection can open the way for sweat metabolomics to significantly add to our understanding of human physiology in health and disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize the reported evidence on the relationship between vasoactive amines and preeclampsia. METHODS A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed and EMBASE. RESULTS The summarized results are as follows: (1) Menstruation can effectively eliminate vasoactive amines norepinephrine, serotonin and histamine. (2) Pregnancy increases norepinephrine production due to fetal brain development and decreases vasoactive-amine elimination due to amenorrhea. (3) Preeclampsia is associated with a low renal and/or sweating capacity, or in rare cases, with increased norepinephrine production due to maternal pheochromocytoma and fetal neuroblastoma. CONCLUSION Preeclampsia is mainly due to decreased excretion of norepinephrine and other vasoactive amines.

Abstract
Since synthetic vitamins were used to fortify food and as supplements in the late 1930s, vitamin intake has significantly increased. This has been accompanied by an increased prevalence of obesity, a condition associated with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, asthma and cancer. Paradoxically, obesity is often associated with low levels of fasting serum vitamins, such as folate and vitamin D. Recent studies on folic acid fortification have revealed another paradoxical phenomenon: obesity exhibits low fasting serum but high erythrocyte folate concentrations, with high levels of serum folate oxidation products. High erythrocyte folate status is known to reflect long-term excess folic acid intake, while increased folate oxidation products suggest an increased folate degradation because obesity shows an increased activity of cytochrome P450 2E1, a monooxygenase enzyme that can use folic acid as a substrate. There is also evidence that obesity increases niacin degradation, manifested by increased activity/expression of niacin-degrading enzymes and high levels of niacin metabolites. Moreover, obesity most commonly occurs in those with a low excretory reserve capacity (e.g., due to low birth weight/preterm birth) and/or a low sweat gland activity (black race and physical inactivity). These lines of evidence raise the possibility that low fasting serum vitamin status in obesity may be a compensatory response to chronic excess vitamin intake, rather than vitamin deficiency, and that obesity could be one of the manifestations of chronic vitamin poisoning. In this article, we discuss vitamin paradox in obesity from the perspective of vitamin homeostasis.

Abstract
Over the past few decades, food fortification and infant formula supplementation with high levels of vitamins have led to a sharp increase in vitamin intake among infants, children and adults. This is followed by a sharp increase in the prevalence of obesity and related diseases, with significant disparities among countries and different groups within a country. It has long been known that B vitamins at doses below their toxicity threshold strongly promote body fat gain. Studies have demonstrated that formulas, which have very high levels of vitamins, significantly promote infant weight gain, especially fat mass gain, a known risk factor for children developing obesity. Furthermore, ecological studies have shown that increased B vitamin consumption is strongly correlated with the prevalence of obesity and diabetes. We therefore hypothesize that excess vitamins may play a causal role in the increased prevalence of obesity. This review will discuss: (1) the causes of increased vitamin intake; (2) the non-monotonic effect of excess vitamin intake on weight and fat gain; and (3) the role of vitamin fortification in obesity disparities among countries and different groups within a country.

Abstract
The skin, the body's largest organ, plays an important role in the biotransformation/detoxification and elimination of xenobiotics and endogenous toxic substances, but its role in oxidative stress and insulin resistance is unclear. We investigated the relationship between skin detoxification and oxidative stress/insulin resistance by examining burn-induced changes in nicotinamide degradation. Rats were divided into four groups: sham-operated, sham-nicotinamide, burn, and burn-nicotinamide. Rats received an intraperitoneal glucose injection (2 g/kg) with (sham-nicotinamide and burn-nicotinamide groups) or without (sham-operated and burn groups) coadministration of nicotinamide (100 mg/kg). The results showed that the mRNA of all detoxification-related enzymes tested was detected in sham-operated skin but not in burned skin. The clearance of nicotinamide and N1-methylnicotinamide in burned rats was significantly decreased compared with that in sham-operated rats. After glucose loading, burn group showed significantly higher plasma insulin levels with a lower muscle glycogen level than that of sham-operated and sham-nicotinamide groups, although there were no significant differences in blood glucose levels over time between groups. More profound changes in plasma H2O2 and insulin levels were observed in burn-nicotinamide group. It may be concluded that decreased skin detoxification may increase the risk for oxidative stress and insulin resistance.
