Abstract
Dengue fever remains a significant public health issue in Malaysia, particularly in rural areas where unique challenges such as dispersed populations, limited infrastructure, and distinct socio-cultural dynamics complicate vector control efforts. Drone technology has emerged as an innovative tool for dengue management, offering capabilities such as aerial surveillance and targeted interventions. However, its adoption in rural communities is hindered by barriers related to community engagement and acceptance. This study aims to evaluate the barriers and opportunities for community engagement in drone-based dengue management within rural Malaysian settings. A cross-sectional study was conducted across six states representing rural Malaysia: Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Kedah, and Perlis. A total of 190 participants were recruited using a stratified purposive sampling method. Data were collected via structured questionnaires assessing sociodemographic characteristics, perceptions of drone technology, and willingness to engage in dengue prevention activities, such as downloading a dengue-related application or participating in mosquito control training programs. Descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression were used to analyze factors influencing community engagement. Participants were predominantly female (67.4%) and of Malay ethnicity (>90%). Younger participants (<40 years) showed significantly lower willingness to participate in training programs ("Maybe" vs. "No": OR = 0.255, 95% CI: 0.067-0.968, p = 0.045), while age was not a significant predictor for app adoption. Negative perceptions of drone use and sociodemographic factors, such as housing type and residency duration, did not significantly influence willingness to engage. Despite these findings, qualitative responses highlighted concerns related to privacy, trust, and technological accessibility in rural areas. Drone-based dengue management in rural Malaysia faces challenges in community engagement, particularly among younger demographics. Tailored strategies, such as gamified training programs and targeted awareness campaigns, are necessary to address barriers and foster acceptance. These findings provide critical insights for developing inclusive and effective public health interventions leveraging drone technology in resource-limited rural settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cross-sector collaboration has been encouraged to improve population health. Both local authorities and civil society organisations impact population health, but less is known about how the actual process of collaboration is done. This scoping review aims to explore how local authorities and civil society organisations collaborate with the ambition to improve population health. DESIGN This scoping review was informed by the guidance of the Joanna Briggs Institute, and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews. DATA SOURCES Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL and Sociological Abstracts were searched from inception to September 2022. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA We included peer-reviewed empirical studies that describe the initiation, execution or sustainment of collaboration for health between local authorities and civil society organisations. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Two independent reviewers extracted data, which was summarised and analysed using inductive content analysis. RESULTS In the 79 included articles, collaborations between local authorities and civil society organisations entailed many different aspects, from exchanging knowledge, allocating resources, providing different types of support or human resources, training, forming different working groups, agreements and working plans to gathering data for needs analysis or evaluation. Few articles described how the collaboration had been initiated or sustained. Initiation was done through advocacy, needs assessments, making a request, creating a workgroup and conducting a pilot study. Sustainment efforts were continuous meetings, documents and tools, funding, and different plans and work structures. There were often additional actors involved in the collaborations. Information about study design was often not described in a clear and comparative manner. CONCLUSIONS There is a need for more research on the details of initiating, executing and sustaining collaborations for health between local authorities and civil society organisations. Knowledge from this scoping review can be used to inform the planning of future collaborations between local authorities and civil society organisations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nigeria has a significant burden of NTDs with more than 120 million people at risk of the dominant NTDs namely Lymphatic Filariasis, Onchocerciasis, and Schistosomiasis. Control efforts have involved the four levels of governance with programs focused on vector control, preventive chemotherapy, water, sanitation and health education. However, the coordination across these levels and with multiple stakeholders remains unclear especially in states like Taraba that have received significant funding from local non-governmental organisations. METHODS This study evaluated NTD control effectiveness across national, state, local, and community levels in Nigeria. Eighty-two stakeholders were interviewed across the 4 governance levels. RESULTS Findings showed distinct roles of the different stakeholders: the National government sets policies, states adapt and strategise, local governments implement programs, and community leaders drive engagement. There is also some multi-sectoral collaboration and coordination among stakeholders. Challenges included inconsistent drug distribution, inadequate Community Drug Distributor (CDD) incentives, and limited cross-sector coordination. DISCUSSION NTD control progress has been notable, but to meet WHO's 2030 targets, Nigeria needs expanded partnerships, increased private sector involvement, improved drug distribution, enhanced CDD support, and integrated programs with cross-border collaboration. CONCLUSION Strengthening multi-sectoral partnerships, improving resource allocation, and engaging community leaders are crucial for advancing NTD elimination in Nigeria. A coordinated approach is essential for sustainable disease control and achieving global health objectives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the 1990s, Tanzania has actively encouraged stakeholder participation in health services through Health Facility Governing Committees (HFGCs) to promote social accountability within its broader health system reforms. While previous studies have explored the functionality of the HFGCs, this study aimed to understand whether stakeholder participation in the HFGCs contributes to promoting social accountability in the health system. METHODS Between July and October 2022, a qualitative study in two districts of Tanzania was carried out. Selected participants, knowledgeable about HFGCs, included facility managers, HFGC members representing diverse stakeholders in the committees, local government leaders, district health secretaries, and religious leaders. Twenty in-depth interviews were conducted and analysed thematically. RESULTS Findings revealed low stakeholder participation in the committees´ activities, partly due to the committees´ inability to effectively sensitize and mobilize them. Inadequate support from local government leaders and the dominance of the facility managers in the committees´ activities, also affected the committees´ role as promoters of social accountability. CONCLUSION The HFGCs in Tanzania have faced challenges in promoting social accountability due to weak stakeholder participation. Key issues include limited awareness of HFGCs, inadequate mobilization, and insufficient training, supervision, and guidelines from district councils. Additionally, flawed election processes, leadership interference, lack of political support, and limited financial resources undermined the committees' effectiveness. To improve engagement, district councils should enhance stakeholder sensitization, build HFGC capacity, ensure that facilities allocate 5% of their budgets for committee activities, monitor performance, and encourage local government support for HFGCs.

Abstract
Network analysis may improve the understanding of malaria epidemiology in rural areas of the Amazon region by explicitly representing the relationships between villages as a proxy for human population mobility. This study tests a comprehensive set of connectivity metrics and their relationship with malaria incidence across villages with contrasting PAMAFRO (a malaria control initiative) coverage levels in the Loreto department of Peru using data from the passive case detection reports from the Peruvian Ministry of Health between 2011 and 2018 at the village level. A total of 24 centrality metrics were computed and tested on 1608 nodes (i.e., villages/cities). Based on its consistency and stability, the betweenness centrality type outperformed other metrics. No appreciable differences in the distributions of malaria incidence were found when using different weights, including population, deforested area, Euclidian distance, or travel time. Overall, villages in the top quintile of centrality have a higher malaria incidence in comparison with villages in the bottom quintile of centrality (Mean Difference in cases per 1000 population; P. vivax = 165.78 and P. falciparum = 76.14). The mean difference between villages at the top and bottom centrality quintiles increases as PAMAFRO coverage increases for both P. vivax (Tier 1 = 155.36; Tier 2 = 176.22; Tier 3 = 326.08) and P. falciparum (Tier 1 = 48.11; Tier 2 = 95.16; Tier 3 = 139.07). The findings of this study support the shift in current malaria control strategies from targeting specific locations based on malaria metrics to strategies based on connectivity neighborhoods that include influential connected villages.

Abstract
Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, particularly in regions with limited resources and tropical climates. Despite extensive efforts, the disease continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality, with ~229 million cases and 409 000 deaths reported in 2020. However, recent years have seen promising advancements in public health strategies aimed at malaria control and elimination. Technological advancements have played a crucial role in improving malaria control efforts. Genomic surveillance techniques enable the monitoring of malaria parasite populations, aiding in the detection of drug resistance and informing targeted interventions. Additionally, innovative diagnostic technologies, such as rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and molecular assays, have enhanced the speed and accuracy of malaria diagnosis, facilitated prompt treatment and reduced transmission. These tools are instrumental in achieving the WHO goals of reducing malaria cases and deaths by at least 90% by 2030. Novel vector control methods offer innovative approaches to reduce malaria transmission. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) remain foundational strategies, with advancements including the development of next-generation insecticides and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Furthermore, genetic modification of mosquitoes, such as gene drive technology, holds promise for reducing mosquito populations and interrupting malaria transmission. These vector control innovations complement other strategies, contributing to comprehensive malaria control efforts aimed at achieving sustainable disease reduction and eventual elimination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Livestock keeping is one of the potential factors related to malaria transmission. To date, the impact of livestock keeping on malaria transmission remains inconclusive, as some studies suggest a zooprophylactic effect while others indicate a zoopotentiation effect. This study assessed the impact of livestock management on malaria transmission risks in rural Tanzania. Additionally, the study explored the knowledge and perceptions of residents about the relationships between livestock keeping and malaria transmission risks in a selected village. METHODS In a longitudinal entomological study in Minepa village, South Eastern Tanzania, 40 households were randomly selected (20 with livestock, 20 without). Weekly mosquito collection was performed from January to April 2023. Indoor and outdoor collections used CDC-Light traps, Prokopack aspirators, human-baited double-net traps, and resting buckets. A subsample of mosquitoes was analysed using PCR and ELISA for mosquito species identification and blood meal detection. Livestock's impact on mosquito density was assessed using negative binomial GLMMs. Additionally, in-depth interviews explored community knowledge and perceptions of the relationship between livestock keeping and malaria transmission risks. RESULTS A total of 48,677 female Anopheles mosquitoes were collected. Out of these, 89% were Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) while other species were Anopheles funestus s.l., Anopheles pharoensis, Anopheles coustani, and Anopheles squamosus. The findings revealed a statistically significant increase in the overall number of An. gambiae s.l. outdoors (RR = 1.181, 95%CI 1.050-1.862, p = 0.043). Also, there was an increase of the mean number of An. funestus s.l. mosquitoes collected in households with livestock indoors (RR = 2.866, 95%CI: 1.471-5.582, p = 0.002) and outdoors (RR = 1.579,95%CI 1.080-2.865, p = 0.023). The human blood index of Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes from houses with livestock was less than those without livestock (OR = 0.149, 95%CI 0.110-0.178, p < 0.001). The majority of participants in the in-depth interviews reported a perceived high density of mosquitoes in houses with livestock compared to houses without livestock. CONCLUSION Despite the potential for zooprophylaxis, this study indicates a higher malaria transmission risk in livestock-keeping communities. It is crucial to prioritize and implement targeted interventions to control vector populations within these communities. Furthermore, it is important to enhance community education and awareness regarding covariates such as livestock that influence malaria transmission.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Globally malaria programmes have adopted approaches to community engagement (ACE) to design and deliver malaria interventions. This scoping review aimed to understand, map, and synthesise intervention activities guided by ACE and implemented by countries worldwide for the prevention, control and elimination of malaria. METHODS Three databases (Web of Science, Proquest, and Medline) were searched for peer-reviewed, primary studies, published in English between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2022. Advanced Google was used to search for grey literature. The five levels of the International Association for Public Participation were used to categorise ACE - (1) Inform, (2) Consult, (3) involve, (4) Collaborate, and (5) Co-lead. Intervention activities were categorised as health education (HE), and/or health services (HS), and/or environmental management (EM). Outcomes were collected as knowledge, attitude, behaviour, help-seeking, health and HS and environment. Enablers and barriers were identified. Malaria intervention phases were categorised as (1) prevention (P), or (2) control (C), or (3) prevention and control (PC) or prevention, control and elimination (PCE). RESULTS Seventy-five studies were included in the review. Based on ACE levels, most studies were at the inform (n=37) and involve (n=26) level. HE (n=66) and HS (n=43) were the common intervention activities. HE informed communities about malaria, its prevention and vector control. EM activities were effective when complemented by HE. Community-based HS using locally recruited health workers was well-accepted by the community. Involvement of local leaders and collaboration with local stakeholders can be enablers for malaria intervention activities. CONCLUSION Involving local leaders and community groups in all stages of malaria prevention programmes is vital for successful interventions. Key elements of successful ACE, that is, consult, collaborate, and co-lead were under-represented in the literature and require attention. National programes must consult and collaborate with community stakeholders to develop ownership of the interventions and eventually co-lead them.

Abstract
Background There has been a concerted effort to reduce malaria burden and bring malaria related mortality to zero. The objectives of this survey were to assess the level of adherence to the current revised malaria control guidelines in the public health facilities in Cross River State of Nigeria and to identify the challenges as well as suggest ways for improvement in treatment outcomes. Methods This was a mixed observational and qualitative survey conducted in 32 public health facilities from 21st to 25th June 2022. Treatment records on malaria were assessed for adherence to the National guidelines. In-depth interviews were conducted with 36 key informants and 4 purposefully selected stakeholders to identify the successes and challenges. Quantitative data were summarized and presented in simple proportions and percentages while qualitative information was recorded, the transcripts thematically coded, analyzed and presented using NVivo 11 software. Results The survey revealed that vector control program was poorly implemented across the state. For case management, presumptive treatment was frequently practiced especially at secondary health facilities for uncomplicated malaria. More than 60% of uncomplicated malaria were being treated with parenteral artemether instead of oral artemisinin combination therapy (ACTs) as recommended. Severe malaria were not treated with Intravenous (IV) Artesunate as first line drug in about 40% of the secondary health facilities. Key successes were noted in malaria management in pregnancy. Major challenges identified include: stock out of commodities, shortage of clinical man power, and low trust in parasitological diagnosis. Conclusion The survey showed that adherence to the key recommendations in various categories of malaria control among health care providers in the public health facilities was below expectation. Malaria preventive treatment in pregnancy with SP fared better perhaps because of its inclusion in ANC packages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficacy of the autodissemination of pyriproxyfen to control malaria vectors has been demonstrated under semi field environment in Tanzania. However, the information on how best communities should be engaged for its routine and large-scale adoption are lacking. This study assessed the community's level of knowledge, perceptions, acceptability of the autodissemination of pyriproxyfen, and the perceived risks on the safety of pyriproxyfen on the environment. METHODS This was a concurrent mixed methods study, comprised of a community-based survey of 400 household representatives and eight focus group discussions (FGDs). The study was conducted in two villages in Mlimba district in south-eastern Tanzania between June and August 2022. For the quantitative data analysis, descriptive statistics were applied using R software, while inductive approach was used for qualitative data analysis, using NVivo software. RESULTS Knowledge on autodissemination of pyriproxyfen approach was found to be relatively low among both the FGD respondents and surveyed community members (36%, n = 144). Nevertheless, when it was explained to them, the envisioned community support for the autodissemination approach was relatively high (97%, n = 388). One of the major perceived benefits of the autodissemination of pyriproxyfen was the reduction of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes and associated malaria transmission. Environmental impact of pyriproxyfen on non-target organisms and health risk to children were among the major concerns. When provided with information on the safety and its utilization particularly through autodissemination approach, 93.5% (n = 374) of the survey respondents said that they would allow the PPF-contaminated pots to be placed around their homes. Similarly, FGD respondents were receptive towards the autodissemination of pyriproxyfen, but emphasized on the need for raising awareness among community members before related field trials. CONCLUSION This study indicates a low knowledge but high support for scaling up of the autodissemination of pyriproxyfen as a complementary tool for malaria control in rural Tanzania. The Findings of this study suggest that community sensitization activities are required to improve the community's acceptability and trust of the approach before respective field trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To detect and identify mosquitoes using their characteristic high-pitched sound, we have developed a smartphone application, known as the 'HumBug sensor', that records the acoustic signature of this sound, along with the time and location. This data is then sent remotely to a server where algorithms identify the species according to their distinctive acoustic signature. Whilst this system works well, a key question that remains is what mechanisms will lead to effective uptake and use of this mosquito survey tool? We addressed this question by working with local communities in rural Tanzania and providing three alternative incentives: money only, short message service (SMS) reminders and money, and SMS reminders only. We also had a control group with no incentive. METHODS A multi-site, quantitative empirical study was conducted in four villages in Tanzania from April to August 2021. Consenting participants (n = 148) were recruited and placed into one of the three intervention arms: monetary incentives only; SMS reminders with monetary incentives; and SMS reminders only. There was also a control group (no intervention). To test effectiveness of the mechanisms, the number of audio uploads to the server of the four trial groups on their specific dates were compared. Qualitative focus group discussions and feedback surveys were also conducted to explore participants' perspectives on their participation in the study and to capture their experiences of using the HumBug sensor. RESULTS Qualitative data analysis revealed that for many participants (37 out of 81), the main motivation expressed was to learn more about the types of mosquitoes present in their houses. Results from the quantitative empirical study indicate that the participants in the 'control' group switched on their HumBug sensors more over the 14-week period (8 out of 14 weeks) when compared to those belonging to the 'SMS reminders and monetary incentives' trial group. These findings are statistically significant (p < 0.05 or p > 0.95 under a two-sided z-test), revealing that the provision of monetary incentives and sending SMS reminders did not appear to encourage greater number of audio uploads when compared to the control. CONCLUSIONS Knowledge on the presence of harmful mosquitoes was the strongest motive for local communities to collect and upload mosquito sound data via the HumBug sensor in rural Tanzania. This finding suggests that most efforts should be made to improve flow of real-time information back to the communities on types and risks associated with mosquitoes present in their houses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For centuries malaria infection remains a public health burden globally as well as in the Sunyani Municipality. This exploratory qualitative study aimed to assess the prospects of environmental management and sanitation (EMS) as a malaria vector control strategy among key stakeholders involved in the prevention and control of malaria in Sunyani Municipality, Ghana. METHOD We used an exploratory qualitative study and a designed focus group discussion (FGD) guide (with specific research questions) to solicit opinions and/or views among Malaria Control Focal Persons, Environmental Health Officers (Health Inspectors), and Honourable Assembly Members. Data were collected between December 2019 and February 2020. The responses were analyzed according to the specific research questions. RESULT Findings from this study shows that high government support and/or political will by investing in environmental sanitation infrastructure, creating the enabling environment for strict enforcement of environmental sanitation bye-laws by Environmental Health Officers/Health Inspectors, effective and efficient collaboration among key stakeholders and organization of communal labor activities is likely to help reduce the majority of the mosquito breeding sites. CONCLUSION The prospects of environmental management and sanitation (EMS) as a vector control strategy, look promisingly very high, pertinent, and workable and a likelihood game changer of winning the fight against malaria due to the residual transmission that is happening outdoors. However, EMS can be employed as a supplementary method to the current core vector control methods if the following conditions and bottlenecks are addressed and in place: (a) Effective collaboration among key stakeholders at all levels; (b) Adequate allocation of funds to the Environmental Health and Sanitation Department; (c) Enactment of robust educational campaigns across all educational levels and via different media; (d) Recognition, empowerment, and adequate resourcing of Environmental Health Officers; (e) Adherence to the building regulations to prevent encroachment of natural wetlands; (f) Revision of fees/fines and prosecution of sanitary offenders; (g) Enactment of an Environmental Sanitation Day (ESD), and establishment of the Environmental Health and Sanitation Fund (EHSF).

Abstract
It is evident that all the countries surrounding Ghana have experienced epidemics of key arboviruses of medical importance, such as the recent dengue fever epidemic in Burkina Faso. Therefore, Ghana is considered a ripe zone for epidemics of arboviruses, mainly dengue. Surprisingly, Ghana never experienced the propounded deadly dengue epidemic. Indeed, it is mysterious because the mosquito vectors capable of transmitting the dengue virus, such as Aedes aegypti, were identified in Ghana through entomological investigations. Additionally, cases may be missed, as the diagnostic and surveillance capacities of the country are weak. Therefore, we review the arbovirus situation and outline probable reasons for the epidemic mystery in the country. Most of the recorded cases of arbovirus infections were usually investigated via serology by detecting IgM and IgG immunoglobulins in clinical samples, which is indicative of prior exposure but not an active case. This led to the identification of yellow fever virus and dengue virus as the main circulating arboviruses among the Ghanaian population. However, major yellow fever epidemics were reported for over a decade. It is important to note that the reviewed arboviruses were not frequently detected in the vectors. The data highlight the necessity of strengthening the diagnostics and the need for continuous arbovirus and vector surveillance to provide an early warning system for future arbovirus epidemics.

Abstract
This policy brief aims to help policymakers develop inter-sectoral interventions in megacities to prevent and control COVID-19. Based on the case of Changning District in Shanghai, China, several policy options are identified. The guiding principles include ensuring a coordinated national response (i.e., moderation is required in epidemic prevention and control); making science-based, precise, and differentiated epidemic control strategies; and establishing a joint prevention and control mechanism. Policy tools include localized management, closed-loop management, community grid management, digital management, and sub-population management. There is no "one size fits all" policy; however, it will be helpful to learn by trial and error through on-the-ground experience with minimal information in real time.

Abstract
Background Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the most widely used malaria prevention and control intervention in Africa. However, their effectiveness may vary depending on their local geographic coverage, ownership and use at household level. This study aimed at assessing LLINs ownership and use following mass distribution campaign in western Kenya. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in November 2017. A total of 160 households were randomly selected from 16 villages. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data on households’ knowledge on malaria, LLINs ownership, utilization and their perceived benefits. Data was analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 for windows. Variables were presented as proportions and associations between variables tested using Pearson’s chi-square test. Results Malaria was reported to be the most frequently occurring disease (87.5%) in the area. Children under 5 years of age were reported to be at higher risks of malaria infection (28.6%). Around 31% of the respondents reported to have at least one member of the household sick with malaria a week before the interview. Commonly cited signs and symptoms of malaria were; fever (24.1%), headache (17.7%), vomiting (14.5%) feeling cold (12.6%) and loss of appetite (10%). There were 382 reported LLINs among 753 occupants in the 160 households surveyed. The average LLIN ownership was 2.4 nets per household and 1.97 persons per LLIN. Among the surveyed households, 96.9% owned at least one LLIN and 64.1% owned at least one LLIN for every two people. Among those who owned LLINs, 98.1% reported using them the previous night. Ownership per household ranged from 0 to 6 with a mean of 2.39. More than three quarter of the nets were acquired through free mass distribution campaigns and 80% were acquired less than 6 months prior to the survey. Conclusion Despite high net coverage and use, a number of households experienced malaria episodes in the study area. There is need to investigate the likelihood of outdoor malaria transmission and assess the physical integrity of the existing LLINs and their insecticidal effectiveness in protecting household members against malaria.
