Abstract
Conventional therapies for metastatic cancers have limited efficacy. Recently, cancer therapies targeting noncancerous cells in tumor microenvironments have shown improved clinical outcomes in patients. However, further advances in our understanding of the metastatic tumor microenvironment are required to improve treatment outcomes. Adipocytes are distributed throughout the body, and as a part of the metastatic tumor microenvironment, they interact with cancer cells in almost all organs. Adipocytes secrete various factors that are reported to exert clinical effects on cancer progression, including engraftment, survival, and expansion at the metastatic sites. However, only a few studies have comprehensively examined their impact on cancer cells. In this review, we examined the impact of adipocytes on cancer by describing the adipocyte-secreted factors that are involved in controlling metastatic cancer, focusing on adipokines, such as adiponectin, leptin, visfatin, chemerin, resistin, apelin, and omentin. Adipocyte-secreted factors promote cancer metastasis and contribute to various biological functions of cancer cells, including migration, invasion, proliferation, immune evasion, and drug resistance at the metastatic sites. We propose the establishment and expansion of "adipo-oncology" as a research field to enhance the comprehensive understanding of the role of adipocytes in metastatic cancers and the development of more robust metastatic cancer treatments.

Abstract
Recent studies have revealed a putative relationship between diet and glioma development and prognosis, but few studies have examined the association between overall diet and glioma risk. This study, conducted in China, employed a hospital-based case-control approach. The researchers utilized an a priori method based on dietary data to evaluate compliance scores for five healthy dietary patterns (the Mediterranean diet, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, the Mediterranean-DASH diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, the Paleolithic diet, and the Planetary Health Diet) in 1012 participants. At the same time, data-driven methods were used to explore the association between dietary patterns and glioma via principal component analysis (PCA). In the multivariate model, adhering to the Mediterranean diet (odds ratio (OR) = 0.29; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.17-0.52), the DASH diet (OR = 0.09; 95% CI: 0.04-0.18), the MIND diet (OR = 0.25; 95% CI: 0.14-0.44), and the Paleolithic diet (OR = 0.13; 95% CI: 0.06-0.25) was associated with a reduced glioma risk. The results of PCA suggested that increasing the intake of plant-based foods and fish and limiting foods rich in carbohydrates, fats, and salts were associated with a reduced glioma risk. There was a substantial nonlinear dose-response association between glioma and the Mediterranean diet score. However, the DASH diet score, the MIND diet score, and the Paleolithic diet score exhibited linear dose-response relationships. Therefore, this study finds that dietary patterns may be an influencing factor for glioma risk.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is a global public health problem. It is the second leading cause of death among women of childbearing age worldwide. Several factors, including diet, have been shown to influence the risk of persistent HPV infection and tumor progression. This paper determines the relationship between dietary patterns and cervical cancer. It is an ecological study of multiple groups, based on two national sources: the High-Cost Account and the National Survey of Nutritional Situation of Colombia of 2015. The population consisted of 3472 women aged 35 to 64. The incidence of cervical cancer was used as the dependent variable while the independent variables included food consumption according to established patterns, area of residence, age, physical activity, and BMI, among other variables. The statistical analysis performed through associations between variables was evaluated by multiple linear regression using R2. 38.9% of the evaluated population belonged to the first quartile of wealth, and 76.5% resided in the municipal capital. The incidence of cervical cancer in Colombia was associated with being affiliated to a state-subsidized health regime and having diabetes mellitus. A conservative eating pattern, as well as belonging to a rural area, are evidenced as protective factors. These results invite the need to encourage public policies and promote healthy lifestyles.

Abstract
BackgroundAsia has experienced a large increase in meat intake in the past decade, yet the health impact of meat intake is not well studied.ObjectiveWe examined the association of meat intake with all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in an Asian country.MethodsParticipants were 113,568 adults with dietary data at recruitment (2004–2013) of the Health Examinees-Gem (HEXA-G) study, a prospective cohort study conducted in 8 regions of Korea. Participants were followed until 31 December 2020. Total, red, white, and organ meat intake were computed based on a 106-item questionnaire. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were implemented using the lowest quintile of meat intake as the reference category.FindingsFor 1,205,236 person-years, 3,454 deaths were recorded. High intake of processed red meat was positively associated with all-cause mortality [men: hazard ratio (HR) 1.21, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.07–1.37; women: HR 1.32, 95% CI 1.12–1.56]. Increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.05–1.39) and cancer mortality (HR 1.24, 95% CI 1.03–1.50) was observed in women with high intake of organ meat. Moderate intake of pork belly was associated with reduced risk of all-cause mortality in men (HR 0.76, 95% CI 0.62–0.93) and women (HR 0.83, 95% 0.69–0.98) but high intake was associated with increased risk of CVD mortality in women (HR 1.84, 95% CI 1.20–2.82). Low beef intake decreased the risk of CVD mortality in men (HR 0.58, 95% CI 0.40–0.84), but roasted pork increased cancer mortality in women (HR 1.26, 95% CI 1.05–1.52).ConclusionThere was increased risk of all-cause mortality associated with intake of processed red meat in men and women, increased risk of all-cause and cancer mortality with intake of organ meat in women, and increased risk of cancer mortality with intake of roasted pork intake in women. High intake of pork belly increased the risk of CVD mortality in women, but moderate intake was inversely associated with mortality from all-causes in both men and women.

Abstract
1. The objective of the present study was to examine the effect of propolis extract on reducing the formation of carcinogenic/mutagenic heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs), thereby minimising dietary exposure in human consumers.2. Chicken thigh meat samples were marinated with various concentrations (0%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 1%) of propolis extract, and cooked in a pan at 150°C or 200°C. Proximate composition, pH, lipid oxidation, creatine, creatinine content and twelve HAA levels of samples were analysed.3. Varying levels of IQx (≤35.44 ng/g), MeIQx (≤0.58 ng/g), MeIQ (≤1.60 ng/g), 7,8-DiMeIQx (≤0.83 ng/g), 4,8-DiMeIQx (≤0.75 ng/g), Harman (≤5.54 ng/g), Trp-P-2 (≤1.77 ng/g), PhIP (≤1.61 ng/g) and AαC (≤0.93 ng/g) were quantified in control samples. Total HAA levels ranged between 2.83 and 47.26 ng/g across all samples. Propolis extract decreased the levels of total HAAs by 41.2-89.4% and 49.4-91.4% at 150°C and 200°C, respectively.4. The results demonstrated that propolis extract marination might be an effective strategy to reduce the dietary exposure of HAAs via mitigating their formation in chicken thigh meat.

Abstract
The typical Western diet, high in processed and animal-based foods, is nutritionally and ethically problematic. Beyond the well-documented cruelty to animals that characterizes the practices of the factory-farming industry, current patterns of meat consumption contribute to medical and moral harm in humans on both an individual level and a public health scale. We aim to deconstruct, by highlighting their fallacies, the common positive and normative arguments that are used to defend current nutritional patterns. Animal-based foods promote the mechanisms that underlie chronic cardiometabolic disease, whereas whole-food plant-based nutrition can reverse them. Factory farming of animals also contributes to climate change, antibiotic resistance, and the spread of infectious diseases. Finally, the current allocation of nutritional resources in the United States is unjust. A societal shift toward more whole-food plant-based patterns of eating stands to provide significant health benefits and ethical advantages, and the medical profession has a duty to advocate accordingly. Although it remains important for individuals to make better food choices to promote their own health, personal responsibility is predicated on sound advice and on resource equity, including the availability of healthy options. Nutrition equity is a moral imperative and should be a top priority in the promotion of public health.

Abstract
Before 'cancer interception' was first advocated, 'interceptor molecules' had been conceived as a sub-category of preventive agents that interfered with the earliest initiation steps in carcinogenesis. Three decades ago, a seminal review cataloged over fifty synthetic agents and natural products that were known or putative interceptor molecules. Chlorophylls and their derivatives garnered much interest based on the potent antimutagenic activity in the Salmonella assay, and the subsequent mechanistic work that provided proof-of-concept for direct molecular complexes with planar aromatic carcinogens. As the 'interceptor molecule' hypothesis evolved, mechanistic experiments and preclinical studies supported the view that chlorophylls can interact with environmental heterocyclic amines, aflatoxins, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to limit their uptake and bioavailability in vivo. Support also came from human translational studies involving ultralow dose detection in healthy volunteers, as well as intervention in at-risk subjects. Antimutagenic and antigenotoxic effects of natural and synthetic chlorophylls against small alkylating agents also highlighted the fact that non-interceptor mechanisms existed. This gave impetus to investigations broadly related to free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory effects, immune modulation and photodynamic therapy. Therapeutic aspects of chlorophylls also were investigated, with evidence for cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human cancer cells. As the science has evolved, new mechanistic leads continue to support the use and development of chlorophylls and their porphyrin derivatives for cancer interception, beyond the initial interest as interceptor molecules.

Abstract
Persistent socioeconomic disparity in mortality is a widely observed phenomenon despite improvements in the economic standard of living and the prevailing universal healthcare coverage policy. In this study, we selected Japan as a case in which public universal coverage has maintained horizontal equity in healthcare access while demographic and economic challenges have affected the life chances of vulnerable subpopulations over the past decade. We assessed the changing trends in the education-related disparity in mortality over a decade across demographic subpopulations for different causes of death, with the goal of generating social policy lessons to contribute to closing the mortality gap. Using a deterministic data merge between nationwide census and death records, we estimated age- and sex-specific mortality rates for 14 causes and their education-related gradients with absolute and relative indices of inequality in 2000 and 2010 via Poisson regression. Estimation parameters were standardized to the age structure of the sub-population of high school graduates in 2000 as the reference. The results demonstrated that the relative gaps in all-cause mortality persisted despite a decrease in the average mortality rate over the study period. The absolute gaps in mortality increased for preventable causes of death associated with lifestyle behavior choices. The average mortality worsened among socioeconomically vulnerable populations such as youth and women, who were left behind in the existing social/economic policy. External causes of death such as suicide and traffic accidents showed decreasing absolute gaps in a subpopulation targeted by universal social and labor policy measures. These change patterns indicate that, compared with a high-risk approach, a universal policy approach to dealing with societal and fundamental causes of health inequality seems more effective in reducing the education-related mortality gap in both absolute and relative terms. Socioeconomic gaps in mortality persist despite extended healthcare coverage. Education-related mortality gaps were confirmed in 2000 and 2010 in Japan. Relative inequality in preventable diseases increased under checkup-for-all policy. Youth and women, left behind in the current social policy, faced worsened gaps. Mortality gaps decreased when a universal policy on societal causes was adopted.

Abstract
NINEIN serves an essential role in centrosome function as a microtubule organizing center, and in the reformation of the interphase centrosome architecture following mitosis. In the present study, the association between NINEIN Pro1111Ala (rs2236316), a missense single nucleotide polymorphism, and the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), related to smoking and alcohol consumption habits in 200 patients with CRC and 1,141 cancer-free control participants were assessed in a case-control study performed in Japan. The results showed that the NINEIN Ala/Ala genotype compared with the Pro/Pro genotype was significantly more associated with an increased risk of CRC, and the males with the Ala/Ala genotype exhibited a significantly increased risk of CRC compared with those with Pro/Pro and Pro/Ala genotypes. Stratified analyses of the Ala/Ala genotype with CRC risk further showed an increased association in never/light drinkers (<23 g of ethanol/day), in male never/light drinkers and in male patients with rectal cancer. These findings suggest that the genetic variant of the NINEIN Pro1111Ala polymorphism has a significant effect on CRC susceptibility in the Japanese population.

Abstract
Cancers are the first main cause of premature death in developed countries. Since brain tumors, especially gliomas, are the most lethal type of cancers, risk factors for their prevalence are still being discussed. Nearly 30–50% of all cancers could be prevented by proper nutritional habits and other lifestyle factors, but their influence on the tumors of the central nervous system has not been explained completely and still requires further studies. That is why we attempted to review the available research in this field, with a special focus on the factors with the proven protective activity observed in other cancers. Adequate vegetables and antioxidants (such as vitamins C and A) provided with a diet could have a protective effect, while other factors have shown no correlation with the incidence of glioma. However, further studies are necessary to determine whether fish, coffee, and tea consumption may prevent glioma. Maintaining proper body weight and undertaking a sufficient level of daily physical activity also seem to be important. Excessive body mass index (BMI) and higher attained height have increased the risk of glioma. In order to link more accurately the chosen factors to the prevalence of gliomas, it seems necessary to conduct large cohort, prospective, controlled studies in different world regions.

Abstract
Aims: Understanding the burden of cancer in Japan is becoming increasingly important to address the socio-economic consequences of the disease. This study broadly examined the cancer burden in terms of: Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), work productivity and activity impairment (WPAI), stress-related comorbidities, and indirect costs in patients diagnosed with (i) any type of cancer, (ii) breast cancer, (iii) colorectal cancer, compared to controls without cancer.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2017 Japan National Health and Wellness Survey (NHWS). Patient outcomes included self-reported stress-related comorbidities, HRQoL assessed by Short Form 12-item Health Survey and EuroQoL 5-dimension scale (EQ-5D), and work productivity and indirect costs assessed by WPAI questionnaire. Multivariate analysis was performed to compare outcomes across groups. An ad-hoc analysis compared respondents currently and currently not receiving prescription medication (Rx).Results: A total of 1,540 patients with any type of cancer, 254 with breast cancer, 144 with colorectal cancer were included in the analyses and compared to 28,070 controls without cancer. After adjusting for potential confounding effects patients with any type of cancer had significantly lower mental component summary scores (45.70 vs. 46.45, p = .003), physical component summary scores (48.95 vs. 50.02, p < .001) and EQ-5D index (0.77 vs. 0.79, p < .001), and significantly increased absenteeism (5.13% vs. 2.68% p < .001) compared to controls. No significant differences were detected for indirect costs. Breast cancer patients had significantly increased odds of anxiety and migraine. Colorectal cancer patients had significantly increased odds of insomnia. Patients currently receiving Rx had significantly lower HRQoL and higher WPAI than both controls and cancer patients not receiving Rx.Conclusions: Japanese cancer patients experience a significantly decreased HRQoL, increased absenteeism and higher odds ratio for stress-related comorbidities. This has implications for future policy making and Health Technology Assessment in Japan.

Abstract
In the course of our research to investigate the cancer prevention potency of natural products derived from plant materials, we isolated fifty-five compounds, including twenty-one new compounds from the peels of Citrus limon, aerial parts of Isodon japonicus, and leaves of Lansium domesticum. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by chemical/physicochemical evidence, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry results. Moreover, the absolute stereochemistry of the new compounds were elucidated by various techniques such as chemical synthesis, modified Mosher’s method, Cu-Kα X-ray crystallographic analysis, and comparison of experimental and predicted electronic circular dichroism data. The antimutagenic effects of the isolated and structure-elucidated compounds against heterocyclic amines, 3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5H-pyrido [4,3-b]indole (Trp-P-1) and 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), were evaluated by the Ames test and in vivo micronucleus test. In this review, we present the comprehensive results of the antimutagenic effects of the isolated natural products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES We have previously designed the anti-cancer food scoring model (ACFS) 1.0, an evidence-based quantitative tool analyzing the anti-cancer or carcinogenic potential of diets. Analysis was performed using simple quantitative indexes divided into 6 categories (S, A, B, C, D, and E). In this study, we applied this scoring model to wider recipes and evaluated its nutritional relevance. MATERIALS/METHODS National or known regional databases were searched for recipes from 6 categories: Korean out-dining, Korean home-dining, Western, Chinese, Mediterranean, and vegetarian. These recipes were scored using the ACFS formula and the nutrition profiles were analyzed. RESULTS Eighty-eight international recipes were analyzed. All S-graded recipes were from vegetarian or Mediterranean categories. The median code values of each category were B (Korean home-dining), C (Korean out-dining), B (Chinese), A (Mediterranean), S (vegetarian), and D (Western). The following profiles were correlated (P < 0.05) with ACFS grades in the univariate trend analysis: total calories, total fat, animal fat, animal protein, total protein, vitamin D, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, sodium, animal iron, zinc, selenium, and cholesterol (negative trends), and carbohydrate rate, fiber, water-soluble fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C, and plant calcium (positive trends). Multivariate analysis revealed that animal fat, animal iron, and niacin (negative trends) and animal protein, fiber, and vitamin C (positive trends) were statistically significant. Pantothenic acid and sodium showed non-significant negative trends (P < 0.1), and vitamin B12 showed a non-significant positive trend. CONCLUSION This study provided a nutritional basis and extended the utility of ACFS, which is a bridgehead for future cancer-preventive clinical trials using ACFS.

Abstract
Aims: As the number of cancer patients increases in Japan, and people are living longer with cancer, the need for caregivers of cancer patients is expected to increase substantially. This study intended to reveal the humanistic and economic burden among caregivers of cancer patients, and to compare it with the burden among caregivers of patients with other conditions (other caregivers) and non-caregivers.Materials and methods: This cross-sectional analysis used data from the Japan National Health and Wellness Survey 2017. Outcome measures included the Short Form 12-item Health Survey for health-related quality of life (HRQoL), EuroQol 5-dimension scale (EQ-5D) for health states utilities, Work Productivity and Activity Impairment questionnaire for the impact of health on productivity and activity, and indirect costs. Multivariate analysis was used to compare across groups, with adjustment for potential confounding effects.Results: A total of 251 caregivers of cancer patients, 1,543 other caregivers, and 27,300 non-caregivers were identified. Caregivers of cancer patients (average 48.0 years old) tended to be younger than non-caregivers (51.5) and other caregivers (54.4) and had the highest education level (57.8% completed university education). Fewer non-caregivers had stress-related comorbidities than caregivers. Non-caregivers had significantly higher EQ-5D index scores than caregivers (average 0.81 vs. 0.73 vs. 0.74). Caregivers of cancer patients had significantly lower mental component summary scores than non-caregivers (40.18 vs. 46.70), and the difference indicated a clinically meaningful decrease in HRQoL. Caregivers of cancer patients had significantly higher presenteeism (37.31% vs. 20.43%), total work productivity impairment (38.85% vs. 21.98%), and activity impairment (40.94% vs. 25.78%) than non-caregivers. Additionally, caregivers of cancer patients had significantly higher total indirect costs (36.34% vs. 20.03% of average annual income).Conclusions: These results have implications for future healthcare planning, suggesting the importance of healthcare systems in Japan to consider the substantial burden borne by caregivers of cancer patients.

Abstract
Background The open-label, randomized, active-controlled KEYNOTE-045 study (NCT02256436) showed that second-line pembrolizumab significantly improved overall survival (OS) of patients with advanced/metastatic urothelial cancer (UC) that progressed after first-line platinum-containing chemotherapy, compared with standard chemotherapy (paclitaxel, docetaxel, or vinflunine). Pembrolizumab is approved for patients with bladder cancer in Japan. Patients and methods Analysis was performed in the subgroup of Japanese patients enrolled in the KEYNOTE-045 study. Coprimary end points were OS and progression-free survival (PFS). Objective response rate (ORR) and safety were secondary end points. Results Fifty-two Japanese patients (pembrolizumab, n = 30; chemotherapy, n = 22) were followed up for a median of 26.1 months. Patients who received pembrolizumab compared with chemotherapy had a 19% lower risk for death (hazard ratio [HR] 0.81, 95% CI 0.44–1.50); after adjusting for baseline covariates, the HR for OS was 0.61 (95% CI 0.32–1.15). The 24-month OS rate was higher with pembrolizumab (26.9% vs 14.3%). PFS was 2.0 and 4.9 months for pembrolizumab and chemotherapy, respectively (HR 1.71, 95% CI 0.95–3.08). ORR was similar for pembrolizumab and chemotherapy (20.0% vs 18.2%); durability of response was higher with pembrolizumab: 67% and 33% of patients, respectively, maintained a response for > 12 months. Treatment-related adverse events, including grade 3–5 events, occurred less frequently with pembrolizumab. Conclusions Pembrolizumab provided durable antitumor activity in patients with locally advanced/metastatic UC that progressed after platinum-containing chemotherapy in the overall population and in the Japanese subgroup; safety profile was consistent with that previously observed for pembrolizumab. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Limited studies have evaluated the risk factors of gastric cancer (GC) after eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) using endoscopic findings. We aimed to investigate GC detection-related endoscopic findings after eradication of H pylori using linked color imaging (LCI), a novel image-enhanced endoscopy. METHODS This single-center, cross-sectional study evaluated background mucosa-associated endoscopic findings described in the Kyoto classification of gastritis in patients with newly detected GC after eradication of H pylori (CA group, n = 109) and those without GC (NC group, n = 85) using white-light imaging (WLI) and LCI. RESULTS Severe atrophy and map-like redness were significantly more frequent in the CA group than in the NC group using WLI (79.8% vs 63.5%, P = .01; 61.5% vs 37.7%, P = .001, respectively) and LCI (79.8% vs 63.5%, P = .01; 78.0% vs 45.9%, P < .0001, respectively). Regular arrangement of collecting venules (RAC) was significantly less frequent in the CA group than in the NC group using WLI (40.3% vs 64.7%, P = .0009) and LCI (37.6% vs 62.4%, P = .0006). Map-like redness was an independent positive risk factor (WLI: odds ratio [OR], 2.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-3.87; P = .03; LCI: OR, 3.62; 95% CI, 1.88-6.97; P < .001), whereas RAC was an independent negative risk factor (WLI: OR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.21-0.82; P = .01; LCI: OR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.23-0.93, P = .03) for detection of GC after eradication of H pylori. CONCLUSIONS Map-like redness, which was identified more frequently using LCI than WLI, and the absence of RAC were associated with detection of GC after eradication of H pylori.

Abstract
The linear no-threshold (LNT) model for low-dose, radiogenic cancer has been a fixture of radiation protection and regulatory requirements for decades, but its validity has long been contested. This article finds, yet again, more questionable data and analyses purporting to support the model, this within the “gold-standard” data set for estimating radiation effects in humans. Herein is addressed a number of significant uncertainties in the Radiation Effects Research Foundation’s Life Span Study (LSS) cohort of atomic bomb survivors, especially in its latest update of 2017, showing that the study’s support of the LNT model is not evidence based. We find that its latest 2 analyses of solid cancer incidence ignore biology and do not support the LNT model. Additionally, we identify data inconsistencies and missing causalities in the LSS data and analyses that place reliance on uncertain, imputed data and apparently flawed modeling, further invalidating the LNT model. These observations lead to a most credible conclusion, one supporting a threshold model for the dose–response relationship between low-dose radiation exposure and radiogenic cancer in humans. Based upon these findings and those cited from others, it becomes apparent that the LNT model cannot be scientifically valid.

Abstract
The interaction between cancer cells and the surrounding microenvironment in malignant tumor tissue is known to be closely associated with cancer cell invasion and proliferation. Endothelin (ET) present in the microenvironment surrounding tumors has been reported to play a role in cancer cell invasion and proliferation by binding to receptors on the cell membrane of cancer cells. Here, we immunohistologically detected the expression of ET-1 and its receptor ETAR in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and evaluated the association between the expression of each as well as their co-expression (ET-axis expression) and clinicopathological factors. A significant difference was observed between the invasion pattern as a parameter of cancer cell malignancy and the expressions of ET-1 and ETAR. The survival rates were significantly lower among the patients who were strongly positive for ET-1 and the ETAR-positive patients compared to negative patients. There was also a significant difference between ET-axis expression and the degree of histological differentiation and mode of invasion, and the survival rate of the positive cases was significantly lower than that of the negative cases. Our findings suggested that ET-axis assessments are important for assessing the malignancy of cancer cells and predicting the prognoses of OSCC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Cancer is closely related to diet. One of the most reliable reports of the subject is the expert report from the World Cancer Research Fund & American Institute of Cancer Research (WCRF&AICR). However, majority of the studies including above were written with academic terms and in English. The aim of this study is to create a model, named Anti-Cancer Food Scoring System (ACFS), to provide a simple index of the anticancer potential of food. SUBJECTS/METHODS We created ACFS codes of various food groups. The evidence of the ACFS codes was provided by the literature at a level comparable to that suggested in the WCRF&AICR report or from the WCRF&AICR report. The ACFS grade was calculated considering food group, cooking, and normalization. Application was performed for Koreans' 20 common meals, which encompass multinational recipes. RESULT We calculated the ACFS grades of Koreans' 20 common meals. The results were not significantly different from the WCRF&AICR guidelines or information from the National Cancer Information Center of Korea. The grades were briefly interpreted as follows: grade S. ideal for cancer prevention; grade A. good for cancer prevention; grade B, might have anticancer potential; grade C, difficult to be regarded as preventive or carcinogenic; grade D, might against cancer prevention; grade E, probably against cancer prevention. CONCLUSIONS The ACFS provides a simple index of anticancer potential of diets. This indicator can be useful for the people without expertise, and is effective in evaluating the diets including Asian foods. The ACFS can help design of future clinical or nutritional studies of cancer prevention.
