Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association of race/ethnicity and education status on time to intervention and the total number of interventions in pediatric patients with microtia undergoing hearing intervention and external ear reconstruction. METHODS A retrospective chart review was performed in pediatric patients diagnosed with congenital ear deformities evaluated by an otolaryngologist or audiologist from January 1, 2013 to December 1, 2021 at a large surgical institution. Variables analyzed included demographics, patient conditions, time to surgery, and number of surgeries. Statistical analysis included analysis of variance, chi-squared tests, and multivariate regression. RESULTS Disparities were identified in reconstructive microtia repair, with non-White patients having an increased number of external ear reconstructive surgeries (p = 0.004), with Black patients average 2 external ear reconstructive surgeries, Hispanic patients 1.74 surgeries, while White patients averaged 0.812 surgeries. All non-White patients also demonstrated increased total number of surgeries (1.94 Asian, 2.57 Black, 2.11 Hispanic, 3.29 Other/Unknown, vs 1.23 White, p = 0.007) and total number of interventions (2.17 Asian, 2.71 Black, 2.37 Hispanic 3.43 Other/Unknown, vs 1.56 White, p = 0.02) as compared to White patients. In multivariate regression analysis, race was a significant factor influencing the number of reconstructive and overall surgeries, while the presence of aural atresia was the strongest predictor for requiring additional hearing surgery. CONCLUSION An increased number of interventions and surgeries were seen amongst non-White patients with microtia. Further investigation is warranted to understand the socioeconomic factors associated with pediatric microtia surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With bilateral hearing loss, the main problems for the patient are speech understanding in noise and, especially in asymmetrical hearing loss, an inability to correctly localize sound sources. There are multiple methods of treatment and rehabilitation for people with conductive hearing loss, and one of them is to use an active bone conduction implant. This case study is designed to evaluate the auditory benefits and sound localization accuracy with active bilateral bone conduction implants-in comparison to unilateral ones-in a patient with congenital bilateral conductive hearing loss caused by a congenital malformation. We assess subjective and audiological benefits (functional, directional hearing, speech comprehension in quiet and noise). CASE REPORT This study describes the results in a 15-year-old patient with bilateral congenital malformation of the outer ears and associated conductive hearing loss who was treated with two Bonebridge active bone conduction implants. Speech recognition ability, hearing thresholds, and sound localization were tested under three conditions: unaided, unilateral on the right-side, and bilateral on both sides. The patient filled in an Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit questionnaire (APHAB) to evaluate limitations in daily life caused by hearing impairment. The results show an improvement in free-field hearing thresholds and the ability to discriminate speech, both in quiet and in noise after implantation. Subjectively, the patient had significantly fewer problems with two implants than with one (or with no implant) in terms of hearing in everyday situations. CONCLUSIONS Unilateral use of the Bonebridge device in a patient with congenital bilateral conductive hearing loss did not provide full benefits. However, bilateral implantation improved speech understanding in noise and sound localization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social determinants of health (SDOH) (healthcare access and quality, education access and quality, socioeconomic status, social and cultural context, neighborhood and built environment) ( Healthy People 2030 ) have been shown to impact a wide range of health-related outcomes and access to care. Given the medical and nonmedical costs associated with children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL), the varied insurance coverage for hearing healthcare services, and the differences in hearing aid utilization rates between children of different sociodemographic classes, the sociodemographic information of children with UHL enrolled in research studies should be collected to ensure the generalizability of hearing healthcare interventions. Therefore, the objective of this scoping review is to assess the reporting of SDOH data for participants in studies of pediatric UHL and its comparison to population trends. DESIGN Two searches of published literature were conducted by a qualified medical librarian. Two reviewers then evaluated all candidate articles. Study inclusion parameters were from 2010 to present, peer-reviewed studies with prospective study design, and participant population including children (age 0 to 18 years old) with UHL. RESULTS Two literature searches using PubMed Medline and Embase found 442 and 3058 studies each for review. After abstract and paper review, 87 studies were included in final qualitative review, with 22 of these studies reporting race distribution of participants, 15 reporting insurance status or family income, and 12 reporting the maternal education level. CONCLUSIONS Sociodemographic data are not commonly reported in research studies of children with UHL. In reported samples, research participants are more likely to have private insurance and higher family income compared with overall population distribution. These demographic biases may affect the generalizability of study results to all children with UHL. Further evaluation is warranted to evaluate whether participant recruitment affects outcomes that reflect the overall population.

Abstract
Bone conduction devices (BCDs) are widely used in the treatment of conductive hearing loss (CHL), but their applications on unilateral CHL (UCHL) patients remain controversial. To evaluate the effects of BCDs in UCHL, a systematic search was undertaken until May 2023 following the PRISMA guidelines. Among the 391 references, 21 studies met the inclusion criteria and were ultimately selected for review. Data on hearing thresholds, speech recognition, sound localization, and subjective questionnaire outcomes were collected and summarized. Moderate hearing threshold improvements were found in UCHL patients aided with BCDs. Their speech recognition abilities improved significantly. However, sound localization results showed wide individual variations. According to subjective questionnaires, BCDs had an overall positive influence on the daily life of UCHL patients, although several unfavorable experiences were reported by some of them. We concluded that the positive audiological benefits and subjective questionnaire results have made BCDs a credible intervention for UCHL patients. Before final implantations, UCHL patients should first go through a period of time when they were fitted with non-implantable BCDs as a trial.

Abstract
Aims To investigate the effects of multimedia health education on psychological burden, quality of life, and self-efficacy of patients with congenital microtia. Materials and Methods Eighty cases of patients with congenital microtia treated and cared for in our hospital from June 2018 to June 2022 were selected according to the numerical table method as retrospective study subjects and divided into 40 cases each in the comparison group and the observation group. The comparison group implemented conventional health education and discharge instruction, and the observation group implemented multimedia health education care to compare the effects of self-efficacy, self-care ability and psychological burden of patients in the two groups. Results Before care, the two groups had no statistically significant difference in the quality of life scores (P > 0.05). Aftercare, the mental vitality scores, social interaction scores, emotional limitation scores, and mental status of patients in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the comparison group (P < 0.05). Before nursing care, there was no statistically significant difference in the nursing ability and anxiety-depression scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). After nursing care, the health knowledge level, self-care skills, self-care responsibility, and self-concept of the observation group were higher than the comparison group, while the depression-emotional disorder scores were significantly lower than the comparison group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Routine health education and discharge instruction combined with multimedia health education care can effectively improve the quality of life of patients with congenital microtia, reduce adverse emotions, and improve patients' sense of self-efficacy.

Abstract
PURPOSE (1) To assess the effectiveness and safety of a bone-conduction implant, the Bonebridge BCI 602, in adults with conductive or mixed hearing loss. (2) To investigate whether the Bonebridge BCI 602 is at least as effective as the Bonebridge BCI 601 in such patients. METHODS The study group included 42 adults who had either conductive or mixed hearing loss. All patients underwent Bonebridge BCI 602 implant surgery. Before and after implantation, pure-tone audiometry, speech recognition tests (in quiet and noise), and free-field audiometry were performed. Word recognition scores were evaluated using the Polish Monosyllabic Word Test. Speech reception thresholds in noise were assessed using the Polish Sentence Matrix Test. Subjective assessment of benefits was done using the APHAB (Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit) questionnaire. RESULTS The APHAB questionnaire showed that difficulties in hearing decreased after BCI 602 implantation. Both word recognition in quiet and speech reception threshold in noise were significantly better after BCI 602 implantation and remained stable for at least 12 months. A significant advantage of the device is a reduced time for surgery while maintaining safety. In this study, the mean time for BCI 602 implantation was 28.3 min ± 9.4. CONCLUSIONS The second-generation Bonebridge BCI 602 implant is an effective hearing rehabilitation device for patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss. Patient satisfaction and audiological results confirm its efficacy and safety. Its new shape and dimensions allow it to be used in patients previously excluded due to insufficient or difficult anatomical conditions. The new BCI 602 implant is as effective as its predecessor, the BCI 601.
