Abstract
BACKGROUND Relative's efforts are essential when palliative care is provided at home and support from healthcare professionals is needed. Despite this, since the support provided varies, relatives may have unmet support needs. Many people receive general palliative care at home rather than specialised care, and nurses play a significant role in supporting relatives. This study aimed to explore registered nurses' experiences of supporting relatives before and after a patient's death when general palliative care is provided at home. METHODS This study used a qualitative explorative design. Data were collected through focus group interviews with 18 registered nurses in home care in Sweden and were analysed using content analysis. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist was used for explicit reporting. RESULTS The findings are presented in four categories with subcategories: receiving support to provide support, continuously providing understandable information, balancing different needs and building relationships facilitates safety and identifying needs. CONCLUSIONS Even if registered nurses support relatives to some extent, they rarely reflect on the support they provide and lack structure in providing support both before and after the patient's death. The findings showed inadequacies in support after the patient's death, which is also emphasised in previous studies. The findings also showed deficiencies in routines, local guidelines and checklists as well as in training and education on how to support relatives when palliative care is provided at home, thereby risking that relatives' needs remain unmet. This highlights the need for creating routines and developing detailed local guidelines and checklists on providing support to relatives both before and after the patient's death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current palliative care training in medical school is inadequate in preparing doctors to provide quality palliative care. Little attention is paid to determining effective methods of training. OBJECTIVE To assess the use of bite-sized animations in improving the confidence, knowledge and attitudes of medical students towards palliative care. METHODS A mixed methods cohort study was adopted for the study. 50 medical students without prior palliative training completed questionnaires before and after watching a 12-part animated palliative care video series called PowerFacts. Of these participants, 18 underwent semi-structured interviews. RESULTS The quantitative results showed that animations are effective in improving the confidence (P < .001) and knowledge (P < .001), but not the attitudes (P = .183) of medical students. Confidence, knowledge and attitudes were not correlated. Analysis of follow-up interviews of a convenience sample of participants showed that animations can be effective in teaching knowledge and does fill some gaps in palliative education for medical undergraduates. However, the content delivered as a sole learning tool is inadequate in preparing medical students for clinical practice. CONCLUSION All participants achieved level 1 (reaction), some achieved level 2 (learning) but most did not achieve level 3 (behaviour) of the Kirkpatrick's model. There is a need for a multimodal approach in the comprehensive teaching of palliative care in undergraduate medical training to achieve all four levels of the Kirkpatrick Model.

Abstract
AIM This study is to investigate the current status of knowledge, attitude and self-reported practice in hospice care among nurses in Hainan, China, and then to analyse its influencing factors and mediating effects. This provides a basis for formulating scientific and standardized hospice care training programmes for nurses. METHODS This cross-sectional study investigated knowledge, attitude and self-reported practice in hospice care among 1819 nurses in Hainan, China. Convenience sampling was used to select participants from 45 hospitals and nursing homes in 14 cities and counties from October to December 2021. A scale of knowledge, attitude and self-reported practice of healthcare providers in hospice care (Chinese version) was administered to collect data during the study period. Statistical analyses, including t-tests, one-way ANOVA, post-hoc analysis and multiple linear regression, assessed the status of knowledge, attitude and self-reported practice of hospice care in nurses and identified influencing factors. The PROCESS macro program model 4.0 was employed to explore the mediating effect of attitude on knowledge and self-reported practice in hospice care. RESULTS Nurses in Hainan displayed low knowledge (mean = 7.68, SD = 3.53), moderate attitudes (mean = 88.13, SD = 12.10) and self-reported practice (mean = 51.81, SD = 9.82) in hospice care. Current employment and willingness to engage in hospice care were significant factors influencing knowledge, attitude and self-reported practice in hospice care. Attitude partially mediated the relationship between knowledge and self-reported practice. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This study focuses on nurses' knowledge, attitude and self-reported practice in hospice care and does not directly involve patients or the public. However, the findings enhance hospice care provided to patients and the broader community by improving nurses' knowledge and skills. This study informs evidence-based training programmes and interventions, benefiting those in need of hospice care services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a growing need for palliative care globally due to the rapid aging of the population and improvement in cancer survival rates. Adequate knowledge and a positive attitude are vital for palliative care nurses. The study's purpose was to examine nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care. METHODS A cross-sectional design with convenience sampling was used. The study included 182 intensive care unit (ICU) nurses from Jordanian hospitals in all sectors. Self-administered questionnaires were used to assess nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and the Kruskal-Wallis H test were used to analyze the data. RESULTS We measured nurses' knowledge using the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing, and we measured nurses' attitudes using the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying scale. The mean total knowledge and attitude scores were 8.88 (standard deviation [SD], 2.52) and 103.14 (SD, 12.31), respectively. The lowest level of knowledge was in psychosocial and spiritual care (mean, 0.51±0.70). The percentage of nurses with unfavorable attitudes was 53.3%. Significant differences in knowledge and attitude levels were observed according to educational level, experience, and hospital type. CONCLUSIONS ICU nurses have insufficient knowledge and inappropriate attitudes toward palliative care. Knowledge of psychological and spiritual aspects of palliative care was particularly lacking as were appropriate attitudes towards communication with dying patients. Improving knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care in nursing schools and hospitals would help overcome this problem.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the etiological factors of the nursing diagnosis of impaired comfort in children and adolescents with cancer. DESIGN This cross-sectional study was carried out in the referral unit for the treatment of childhood cancer in a tertiary hospital located in northeastern Brazil. METHODS A total of 200 children and adolescents who were undergoing cancer treatment were included in this study. Data collection instruments and protocols were constructed with operational and conceptual definitions of clinical indicators and etiological factors for the nursing diagnosis of impaired comfort. A latent class model with adjusted random effects was used to determine impaired comfort and measures of sensitivity and specificity of clinical indicators. A univariate logistic regression analysis was performed for each etiological factor of impaired comfort. RESULTS The analysis of etiological factors for the nursing diagnosis of impaired comfort in children and adolescents with cancer showed the high prevalence of four factors: noxious environmental stimuli, insufficient situational control, insufficient resources and insufficient environmental control. Illness-related symptoms, noxious environmental stimuli, and insufficient environmental control increased the chance of impaired comfort occurring. CONCLUSION The etiological factors with the highest prevalence and most significant impact on the occurrence of impaired comfort were noxious environmental stimuli, insufficient situational control and illness-related symptoms. IMPACT The results obtained in this investigation can support more accurate nursing diagnostic inference of impaired comfort in children and adolescents with cancer. Moreover, the results can inform direct interventions for the modifiable factors that trigger this phenomenon to avoid or minimize the signs and symptoms of the nursing diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses in critical care and palliative care units care for patients suffering from severe pain and suffering and at high mortality risk. For this reason, nurses working in these units should be psychologically resilient. However, nurses who are constantly exposed to the death process face the risk of thanatophobia. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between thanatophobia levels and the psychological resilience of nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units. METHODS The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study included 158 nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units. Personal information form for nurses, Thanatophobia Scale and Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults were used. Data were collected through an online questionnaire in the study. Percentage calculations, mean measurements, Kruskal Wallis test and Mann Whitney U test were used in the statistical evaluation of the data. RESULTS The mean of thanatophobia scale and psychological resilience scale was found 31.74 ± 10.08 and 108.34 ± 7.12, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the tanatophobia total scale score and age, receiving training on psychological resilience (p < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between perseption of self, family cohesion and perception of future and the status of receiving training on psychological resilience (p < 0.05). A statistically negative significant correlation was determined between the thanatophobia scale and the psychological resilience scale total scores. CONCLUSIONS As a result, it was determined that as the thanatophobia of the nurses increased, their psychological resilience decreased. This situation may negatively affect nurses working in critical departments to provide quality health care to patients. Establishing and maintaining training programs to reduce thanatophobia and increase psychological resilience of nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units will ensure that nurses provide quality health care to the patient and reduce the physiological and psychological wear of nurses.

Abstract
Lack of knowledge about palliative care is one of the most common reasons for hindering the delivery of high-quality palliative care. Nurses play a major role in providing palliative care, and the degree of their mastery of this knowledge is crucial to whether they can effectively deliver the ideal palliative care. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the level of palliative care knowledge in this population. As of 8 November 8, 2022, we performed systematic searches in 10 databases. Meta-analysis of quantitative data that measuring the level of palliative care knowledge of nurses using the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing (PCQN) was conducted using Stata software (version: V.15). A pooled mean score <10 indicated a low/insufficient knowledge level. The funnel plot and Egger's regression test were used to detect publication bias, and finally, the robustness of the results was evaluated through sensitivity analysis. The pooled mean score for the level of nurses' knowledge of palliative care was 9.68 (95% CI: 9.40 to 9.96). Among the three dimensions of the PCQN scale, the pooled mean score for the '"Philosophy and Principles of Palliative Care'" section was 1.73 (95% CI: 1.38 to 2.08); the '"Pain and Other Symptom Control'" section was 6.73 (95% CI: 6.41 to 7.05); and the '"Psychological, Spiritual and Social Care'" section was 1.21 (95% CI: 0.72 to 1.69). It can be seen that nurses' mastery of palliative care knowledge is not sufficient. It is recommended that relevant departments formulate and promote the implementation of targeted measures to improve the knowledge level of this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palliative care has become a key medical field worldwide. Although research relating to adult palliative care is well-established, less is known about children's palliative care (CPC). Therefore, this study investigated the knowledge, attitude and behavior of pediatric healthcare workers (PHWs) regarding CPC and analyzed the influencing factors for the implementation and development of CPC. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 407 PHWs was carried out in a Chinese province from November 2021 to April 2022. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: a general information form and questions on the knowledge, attitude and behavior of PHWs about CPC. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS The total score of the PHWs' knowledge, attitude and behavior about CPC was 69.98, which was at a moderate level. PHWs' CPC knowledge, attitude, and behavior are positively correlated.The most important influencing factors were working years, highest education, professional title, job position, marital status, religion, grade of hospital (I, II or III), type of medical institution, experience of caring for a terminally ill child/kinsfolk and total hours of CPC education and training received. CONCLUSIONS In this study, PHWs in a Chinese province had the lowest scores on the knowledge dimension of CPC, with moderate attitude and behavior and various influencing factors. In addition to professional title, highest education and working years, it is also worth noting that the type of medical institution and marital status also affected the score. Continuing education and training of PHWs in CPC should be emphasized by the administrators of relevant colleges and medical institutions. Future research should start with the above-mentioned influencing factors and focus on setting up targeted training courses and evaluating the post-training effects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE Patients admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) have a high mortality rate due to their complexity. Palliative care (PC) is a key aspect that can improve patient care. Because of the essential role of the nurse in providing this care, training, and including it in daily practice are needed. Our objective was to review the level of knowledge among the nurses in the CCU regarding PC and assess whether there is an association between each of the study variables. METHODOLOGY We performed a descriptive observational cross-sectional study in the CCU of a tertiary level university hospital. The questionnaire Palliative Care Quiz for Nurses, previously validated and translated into Spanish, was used. This is a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions (True/False/Do not know-Do not answer) which evaluates three aspects of PC: philosophy, psychosocial and control of pain and other symptoms. In addition, sociodemographic data was collected. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used, a p < .05 was considered statistically significant in all cases. RESULTS The questionnaire was administered to 68 nursers, with an average age of 34.98 ± 12.12 years, and 13.00 ± 11.75 years of professional experience. Twelve nurses have Master studies and 28 nurses have received training in PC. The percent of correct answers of the questionnaire was 56.98%. There were no statistically significant differences between the total average score and the variables studied. However, looking at each aspect on the scale, an association was found between PC training and control of pain and other symptoms (p = .033). CONCLUSION Critical care nurses have a basic knowledge of PC, it being insufficient in the psychological sphere. Developing a training programme which identifies misconceptions and training deficits might improve the management of symptom control in palliative care patients, quality of care and its application.

Abstract
AIM Asses training, perception of readiness and training needs in palliative care (PC) theoretical and practical of primary care nurses in Spain, through descriptive cross-sectional study. DESIGN Descriptive cross-sectional study. SETTING Primary care nurses in Spain with online access. PARTICIPANTS Primary care nurses in Spain, January and February 2021. 344 responses, 339 met the inclusion criteria. MAIN NEASUREMENTS Sociodemographic variables, PC training, training needs were analyzed. Through Google Forms online questionnaire and INCUE Instrument. Descriptive analyses were performed and the results were compared using the exact symmetry test and the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS 82,6% women, with an average age of 45.5years. 86.1% of the nurses had training in PC, been basic in the 45.4%. Only 40.5% feel quite or very prepared to take care for palliative patients. Nurses demanded more training in psycho-emotional and grief and coping with losses. 83.76% passed the theoretical block compared to 43.36% of the practical, detecting higher training needs in the last (P<.001). The passed rates varied depending on the educational level. CONCLUSIONS Nursing training in PC in primary care continues to be deficient, especially in practical application. Targeted training is necessary to have an impact on the care of people with palliative needs and their families.

Abstract
Background Hospice care is a multidisciplinary approach that focused on patients’ quality of life, and nurses allocate more of their time with patients and patients’ families than those nurses working in other disciplines. Nurses’ knowledge of and attitudes toward hospice care can affect the quality of hospice care. At present, China’s hospice care institutions are suffering from an obvious shortage of nursing staff. Since clinical nurses are the main force behind the future provision of hospice care, their knowledge of, attitudes and willingness to practice can greatly promoted the growth of hospice care, however, available data on clinical nurses’ willingness to practice hospice care are limited. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study design was employed to collect data from 1833 nurses working in tertiary or secondary general hospitals in Guangxi, China. We examined nurses’ demographic characteristics and scores on the Chinese version of the hospice care knowledge scale, the Chinese version of the Bradley Attitude Assessment Questionnaire, and a brief quiz concerning their willingness to practice hospice care in the future. Descriptive, single factor, multiple regression analyses and logistic regression analyses were used for data analysis. Results Nurses displayed moderate mean scores for both knowledge of and attitudes, and only 505 (27.5%) nurses expressed their willingness to practice hospice care, 1329 (72.5%) of nurses sampled expressed their unwillingness or uncertainty. Multivariate regression analyses showed that education, professional qualification, monthly income, whether they had been trained in hospice care, and willingness to practice hospice care were the main influencing factors of knowledge; education, whether they lived with someone aged >60 years, and whether they had been trained in hospice care were main factors influencing attitudes. Additionally, logistic regression analyses showed that hospice care knowledge, whether they had been trained in hospice care, and whether they had clinical experience affected the nurses’ willingness to practice hospice care. Conclusion This study highlighted a knowledge gap and moderate attitudes toward hospice care among nurses, and most nurses did not prefer to practice hospice care. Having been trained in hospice care was the main common factor of nurses’ knowledge of, attitudes toward, and willingness to practice hospice care in the future, indicating the necessity to provide nurses with more targeted hospice care training.

Abstract
(1) Background: Nurses can find people with advanced diseases or in their last days of life during their professional careers and in many different care settings. For this reason, they need to have at least a basic level of palliative care education since they are the professional cohort treating these patients in a very close way. This research aims to determine the level of knowledge in palliative care of Spanish nurses and establish any possible difference based on their experience and training in palliative care. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional design using survey methods (distributed an online questionnaire) aimed at Spanish registered nurses. A validated questionnaire (PCQN-SV) was used to determine the level of knowledge in palliative care; information on some variables to characterize the population was also collected (experience and education in palliative care, years of professional experience, academic level, and others). Uni and bivariate descriptive analyses were performed. A binary logistic regression model was also developed to identify those variables that influenced obtaining results higher than the population’s average. (3) Results: Spanish nurses have a medium–low level of knowledge in palliative care, higher in those who have previous experience or education in this area. Statistically significant differences were also found according to the area in which their caring activity was developed. (4) Conclusions: It is necessary to implement strategies for the basic training of nursing professionals in palliative care to offer quality care to people in advanced stages of illnesses or at the end of their lives.

Abstract
Background Nurses’ knowledge regarding palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care has been documented, but the competence of nurses in Taiwan has not been deeply analyzed and may affect the use of EOL care. Purpose We aimed to (1) assess the palliative care knowledge, competence and attitude of nurses in a general hospital and (2) examine the paths connecting nurses’ demographic characteristics, previous experiences, knowledge, competence, and attitude. Method A correlational, cross-sectional survey design was implemented to recruit 682 eligible nurses. The questionnaires included demographic information and palliative and EOL care knowledge, attitude, and competence scales. Path analysis was employed for statistical analysis using structural equation modeling. Results Overall, 76% of the questions assessing palliative and hospice knowledge were answered correctly. Nurses’ palliative attitudes were divided into “positive perception” and “negative perception”. “Positive perception” was highly correlated with competence (r = 0.48, p < 0.001), but “negative perception” was not significantly correlated with competence (r = −0.07, p = 0.25). “Positive perception” (β = −0.01, p = 0.84) and competence (β = 0.02, p = 0.80) were not related to palliative knowledge. “Negative perception”, however, was negatively associated with palliative knowledge (β = −0.20, p < 0.01). Conclusions This study suggests continuing education to decrease nurses’ “negative perception” attitude regarding the provision of information to patients and families to provide better palliative and EOL care. Implications for Practice Nurses’ attitudes and competences with respect to palliative care and EOL care are critical. Areas for further research and advanced palliative and EOL care-related education and training are suggested and may be applied in future clinical interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nursing homes are likely to become increasingly important as end-of-life care facilities. Previous studies indicate that individuals residing in these facilities have a high prevalence of end-of-life symptoms and a significant need for palliative care. The aim of this study was to develop an end-of-life care program for nursing homes in Spain based on previous models yet adapted to the specific context and the needs of staff in nursing homes in the country. METHODS A descriptive study of a complex intervention procedure was developed. The study consisted of three phases. The first phase was a prospective study assessing self-efficacy in palliative care (using the SEPC scale) and attitudes towards end-of-life care (using the FATCOD-B scale) among nursing home staff before and after the completion of a basic palliative care training program. In the second phase, objectives were selected using the Delphi consensus technique, where nursing home and primary care professionals assessed the relevance, feasibility, and level of attainment of 42 quality standards. In phase 3, interventions were selected for these objectives through two focus group sessions involving nursing home, primary care, and palliative care professionals. RESULTS As a result of the training, an improvement in self-efficacy and attitudes towards end-of-life care was observed. In phase 2, 14 standards were selected and grouped into 5 objectives: to conduct a comprehensive assessment and develop a personalized care plan adapted to the palliative needs detected; to provide information in a clear and accessible way; to request and record advance care directives; to provide early care with respect to loss and grief; to refer patients to a specialized palliative care unit if appropriate, depending on the complexity of the palliative care required. Based on these objectives, the participants in the focus group sessions designed the 22 interventions that make up the program. CONCLUSIONS The objectives and interventions of the NUHELP program constitute an end-of-life care program which can be implemented in nursing homes to improve the quality of end-of-life care in these facilities by modifying their clinical practice, organization, and relationship with the health system as well as serving as an example of an effective health intervention program.

Abstract
Background Nursing care for terminally ill cancer patients is routinely provided by oncology nurses in Saudi Arabia. Shortages and retention of oncology nurses is an important concern for healthcare leaders. Objectives To identify and describe predictors of nurses’ intention toward working in the oncology specialty amongst three groups: undergraduate nursing students, oncology registered nurses and postgraduate oncology nursing students. In particular, the study sought to analyse association between individual characteristics, job-related factors, palliative care knowledge, attitude toward caring for dying patients, general self-efficacy, job satisfaction and intention to work in oncology. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 477 participants in five major hospitals in Saudi Arabia. The Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing, Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale and Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire short form were used for data collection. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors associated with intention to work in oncology. Results 43.9% (n = 208) of the sample reported an intention to work in oncology. Only one variable was a significant predictor of intention to work in oncology across all three groups studied: a more positive attitude toward caring for dying patients (Odds ratio (OR) = 1.09 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04–1.16]), (OR = 1.08 [95% CI 1.04–1.12]), (OR = 1.078 [95% CI 1.053–1.103] with P ≤ 0.001 for undergraduate, registered and postgraduate groups respectively. At post-graduate level, higher levels of palliative care knowledge and general self-efficacy were significantly associated with increased intention, whilst at undergraduate level, general self-efficacy was a significant predictor. Job satisfaction was a significant predictor of intention amongst registered nurses. Conclusions Attitude toward caring for dying patients and general self-efficacy appear to be the most important predictors of intention to work in the oncology nursing specialty. However, the significance of influencing factors varied between the different groups of nurses studied. Perhaps surprisingly, palliative care knowledge was an influential factor amongst the postgraduate group only. The study results provide important insights for nursing leaders and policymakers in Saudi Arabia to inform the future planning of nursing workforce strategies to address shortages and retention of oncology nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic and cancer diseases are expected to rise with the growing population of the elderly in the world. Home palliative care might be a possible solution for improving these patients' quality of life; therefore, the present study sets out to investigate home care nurses' attitude towards and knowledge of home palliative care. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a descriptive cross-sectional study (2018-19), in which 168 home care nurses and nursing assistants in East Azerbaijan Province (Iran) were included (2018). The questionnaire used was specifically designed by Shimizu et al. in 2016 for determining the nurses' attitude towards and knowledge of home care. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistics (T-test and ANOVA). RESULTS In this study, 95 (56.60%) and 113 (67.90%) of the participants were found to have negative attitudes and limited knowledge, respectively. The other participants seemed to have neutral attitudes towards and average knowledge of home palliative care. The Mean (SD) attitude score on terminal home care was estimated 2.33 (0.83), and the knowledge score on dying care was calculated 41.76%, which were the lowest in comparison with the scores of other dimensions. CONCLUSIONS The home care nurses' attitude towards and knowledge of home palliative care were found to be negative and limited, respectively, which underscores the need to endeavor to improve the attitude towards home care and the knowledge of dying care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite its established benefits, palliative care (PC) is not well known among patients and family/caregivers. From a nationally representative survey, we sought to assess the following associated with PC: knowledge, knowledge sources, and beliefs. METHODS Data were drawn from the Health Information National Trends Study (HINTS 5 Cycle 2), a cross-sectional, survey of non-institutionalized adults aged 18+ years in the USA. Data were weighted and assessed by proportional comparison and multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 3504 respondents were identified, and approximately 29% knew about PC. In the adjusted model, less PC knowledge was associated with: lower age (those aged <50), male gender, lower education (<high school graduation or high school graduate), and non-internet users. A little over half (55%) of respondents accessed healthcare providers first for PC information, and 80% considered providers the most trusted source of PC information. Most of the participants strongly/somewhat agreed that the goal of PC is to help friends and family cope with a patient's illness (90.6%), offer social and emotional support (93.4%), and manage pain and other physical symptoms (95.1%). Similarly, a majority (83.3%) strongly/somewhat agreed that it is a doctor's obligation to inform all patients with cancer about the option of PC. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS PC knowledge was generally low (1-in-3 respondents knew of PC), with significant differences according to age, gender, education, and internet use. These data provide a baseline from which PC education policies and interventions may be measured.

Abstract
Background and aim of the work: Nursing education plays a key role in preparing future nurses to deal with dying patients, which represents one of the most emotionally involving aspect of nursing. The aims of the study were to explore nursing students’ attitudes towards care of dying patients in three different European contexts and to analyze the variables that can influence them. Methods: We conducted an international multicenter cross-sectional study. We administered the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale form B (FATCOD-B) and a demographic form to 569 students, enrolled in three Nursing Programmes in different countries (Italy, Spain and United Kingdom), who accepted to participate in the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 26.0. Results: Median total FATCOD-B scores indicated intermediate levels of students’ attitudes towards care for dying patients, with a statistically significant difference among the three student groups. The median total FATCOD-B scores did not statistically significantly change in students with different age, gender, year of study, religious beliefs, nursing education on palliative care, previous experiences of dying patient care and personal grieving. Conclusions: In our study, nursing students feel partially prepared in caring for dying patients and their attitudes do not change as the course of study progresses. No selected variables had an impact on students’ attitudes towards palliative care. Since nurses play a vital role in ensuring the quality of care, education on end-of-life care should be offered as a core part of undergraduate nursing programs. (www.actabiomedica.it)

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is crucial that future nurses be prepared with the knowledge and skills to provide palliative care (PC). AIMS This study aimed to investigate Mongolian nursing students' PC knowledge and attitudes towards end-of-life (EOL) care, as well as identify related predictors. METHODS Participants were 141 students who enrolled in nursing program in Mongolia. RESULTS Mean Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing (PCQN) score was 7.15 out of 20. The mean Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying (FATCOD) score was 64.2 out of 100. Older age, male gender, and higher satisfaction with nursing school were significant predictors of higher levels of palliative care knowledge. Living in traditional Mongolian housing (Ger) and having clinical EOL experience were significant predictors of positive attitudes towards EOL care. CONCLUSIONS Mongolian senior nursing students were inadequately prepared to provide PC. PC nursing education in Mongolia needs to be improved to meet an appropriate global standard.

Abstract
Aim The study is aimed to perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the palliative care quiz for nurses in an Indonesian context to evaluate its psychometric properties. Methods A two-phase design was used in this study, including cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric testing. The PCQN-I was tested on a convenience sample of health-care providers recruited from 20 primary health-care (PHC) centers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from July to October 2017. Results The cross-cultural adaptation ultimately resulted in a total of 20 items from the PCQN-I. An expert committee revised the words in Item 4 from "adjuvant therapies" to "adjuvant therapies/additional therapies," in Item 5 from "bowel regimen" to "gastrointestinal therapies," and Item 16 from "Demerol" to "Pethidine" based on the Indonesian context. The experts retained Item 5 "It is crucial for family members to remain at the bedside until death occurs," although none of the participants (n = 40) involved in the pilot testing could answer it correctly, and Item 19 "The loss of a distant or contentious relationship is easier to resolve than the loss of one that is close or intimate" although few participants responded correctly. A total of 150 health-care providers consisting of 100 nurses and 50 physicians were involved in the psychometric testing. The scale-level content validity index/Ave of the PCQN-I was 97 and 93 in terms of its relevancy and clarity, respectively. The reliability was calculated as the Kuder-Richardson formula 20 score was 0.71. Conclusions The PCQN-I is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing palliative care knowledge among PHC providers. Further research is warranted to examine its reliability in different clinical settings.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the level of knowledge of registered nurses about palliative care and to determine the effect of educational intervention on this level of knowledge in Turkey. The study was a quasi-experimental study and consists of 136 nurses. The study was conducted between April and June 2019 in a university hospital in Malatya, Turkey. Nurse are educated on the definition, history, and philosophy of palliative care, the responsibilities of palliative care nurses, symptom management, and end of life care. The education was applied in five sessions. Each session took approximately 40 min and sessions were conducted once a week. Data were collected before and after the education via nurse identification form developed by the research team and the Palliative Care Knowledge Test. It was determined that the nurses received 8.9 ± 1.1 out of 20 points before and 17.5 ± 1.9 points after the education. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of nurses before and after training (p < 0.001). It was found that educational intervention has a large effect (Cohen's d = 5.540) on nurses' knowledge about palliative care. It was determined that educational intervention was an effective way to improve nurses' knowledge about palliative care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aims at gaining a broad overview of national approaches about Palliative care (PC) implementation into health care systems in countries that have PC identified within their national policies and strategies. METHODS Paper searching was conducted using both peer-reviewed databases and gray literature sources covering governmental reports with PC strategies from 2000 onward. Articles published in English that cited at least 1 category of the WHO's public health PC model were included. Qualitative content analysis was used for data analysis and synthesis of findings. RESULTS Thirteen reports met the inclusion criteria. Education and appropriate policies were the most frequent strategies covered by all countries included. Under education; information about training health care providers was needed for the effective introduction of a PC program. Reviewing standards of care required to deliver PC effectively, and financial support for PC service development were considered the central policies needed. Furthermore, partnerships and collaborations across the health systems as well as providing care based on patients' needs were required for the provision of a PC program. CONCLUSION It is of the essence to learn from countries demonstrating enhanced PC practices before the implementation of a new PC program in a given country. Such practices could be used as a guide and to address barriers that may hinder the development of PC at a national level. Best practices can be achieved by focusing on educational and policy-based strategies through identifying patients' needs, assessing general public awareness, health care providers' knowledge and training as well as incorporating stakeholders' perspectives.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the associations between the clinical variables and the Nursing diagnoses of NANDA-I Taxonomy II with the presence of Impaired comfort. Method: a quantitative and analytical study conducted with 66 individuals with end-of-life oncological disease, admitted to a specialized institution in the Federal District, Brazil. Primary data were collected between February and November 2018, which covered social, demographic and clinical variables, in addition to three validated scales to identify Nursing diagnoses. To assess the association of impaired comfort (dependent variable) as a function of the independent variables (Nursing diagnosis and clinical variables), the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test and Pearson's chi-square test were used, considering p< 0.05 as significant. Results: a total of 960 diagnoses were identified in 66 patients. There was a positive relationship with Impaired comfort for the following Nursing diagnoses: Chronic pain; Impaired physical mobility; Self-care deficit (for feeding, bathing, intimate hygiene and dressing); Chronic sorrow and Dysfunctional family processes. The following clinical variables showed a statistically significant relationship regarding impaired comfort: time of palliative care, pain, tiredness, appetite, sorrow, anxiety and well-being. Conclusion: an association of the pain, impaired physical mobility, self-care deficit and chronic sorrow nursing diagnoses with impaired comfort was identified. Among the clinical variables, there was a relationship between time of palliative care and symptoms.

Abstract
This study investigated Indonesian primary health care providers' knowledge and comfort towards palliative care. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. From August 2017 to February 2018, the research team approached 70 primary care centres in the Yogyakarta province of Indonesia and invited health care providers to complete the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing - Indonesia and describe their comfort in caring for terminally ill patients. Data were obtained from 516 health care providers. The mean (±s.d.) score of palliative care knowledge was low (7.8±3.3 of a possible score of 20). Current comfort level in providing palliative care was also low (1.6±2.7 of a possible score of 10). Only 11.3% of palliative care knowledge was explained by respondents understanding of palliative care definition, their education levels and experience in providing palliative care in hospital. However, 82.9% of provider comfort was explained by their experiences for caring for terminally ill patients in primary healthcare centres, palliative care training and years of work experience in primary healthcare centres. Indonesian evidence-based palliative care standards and guidelines must be established with education offered to all providers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This scoping review aims to examine and map existing evidence on home care nurses facilitating planned home deaths, as well as to identify knowledge gaps important for further research on the topic. INTRODUCTION Nurses may be able to offer new models of care within the primary setting for palliative patients. There is some evidence for the efficacy of home based palliative care and dying at home, but there is a lack of information on how home care nurses facilitate planned home deaths. A preliminary search shows no ongoing or existing scoping reviews describing how home care nurses facilitate home deaths. INCLUSION CRITERIA Eligible studies will explore how home care nurses facilitate planned home deaths in home care services. Papers related to other health care professions will be excluded. The authors aim to include papers related to facilitating planned home deaths, understood as situations where patients receiving palliative care wish to die in their own home and where home care services help facilitate this. The setting is home care services. Studies focusing on other settings, such as nursing homes or institutions, will be excluded. METHODS Medical literature databases including MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, Google Scholar, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses will be searched. Retrieved papers will be screened for inclusion by two reviewers. Data will be extracted from included papers, and a narrative summary will accompany the charted results and describe how the results relate to the review objective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Generalist nurses frequently care for people who have advanced chronic diseases in decline, or who are dying. Few studies have measured graduating nurses' knowledge about end-of-life (EoL) care. AIMS To measure and compare knowledge about EoL care using the palliative care quiz for nurses among two cohorts of graduating nurses in a baccalaureate nursing programme. METHODS A quantitative cross-sectional survey design using a convenience sample of two cohorts of students. FINDINGS Total mean scores were low at 44.5% and 46.5% for the cohorts, respectively; this was not statistically significant. Misconceptions related to presentation and symptom management of the dying patient and integration of palliative with acute care. Palliative care knowledge was higher among the cohort who completed the dedicated EoL care course. CONCLUSION Significant misconceptions about EoL care exist among these graduating nurses; this information provides direction for curriculum revision.

Abstract
Along their professional career, nurses can find patients who require palliative care (PC). It is necessary to have at least a basic education in this area, that should be acquired during their university education. The objective of this descriptive online-survey set in five nursing Colleges was to analyze Spanish nursing students' knowledge in PC, offering an image of the status of education in PC. 619 students took an online questionnaire with the Spanish version of the Palliative Care Quiz for Nurses (PCQN-SV), which also collected information about their education in the field of PC. Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed, and a predictive binary logistic regression model was developed. Students obtained an average 45.65% of right answers in PCQN-SV, with differences related to the college and academic year in which they were enrolled and to their education in PC. In the regression model having theoretical education in PC (OR = 1.70) and academic year (OR = 1.35) showed to be both predictors of getting a result in PCQN-SV over 45% of correct answers. This study showed that Spanish nursing students have a medium-low level of knowledge in PC, and it also supports the need to develop a common framework for nurses' education in PC.

Lack of knowledge of and negative attitude palliative care among nurses is one of the most common barriers to quality palliative care. This study, therefore, aimed to assess nurses' knowledge about palliative care and attitude toward end-of-life care in public hospitals in Wollega zones, Ethiopia. METHODS A multicenter institutional-based cross-sectional study design was employed to collect data from 372 nurses working in public hospitals in Wollega zones from October 02-22, 2019. A self-administered questionnaire with three different parts: Demographic characteristics of nurses, the Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing (PCQN), and the Frommelt Attitudes Towards Care of the Dying (FATCOD). SPSS version 21 was used for analysis used for data analysis. The binary logistic regression test was used for analysis at p < 0.05. FINDINGS Our final sample size was 422 nurses (response rate = 88%). With the mean total PCQN scores (9.34), the majority of them showed an inadequate level of knowledge about palliative care. The mean total FATCOD scores (79.58) displayed a positive attitude toward end-of-life care, with 52% of respondents eager to care for a dying person and their family. Nurses who had PC service experience [AOR = 1.94 CI (1.10-3.42), p = 0.02] and had ever attended training/lecture on PC [AOR = 1.87 CI (1.01-3.46), p = 0.04] were independently associated with nurses' knowledge about PC. Similarly, nurses who had no PC service experience [AOR = 0.41, CI (0.21-0.79), p = 0.008], who read articles/brochures about PC [AOR = 1.94, CI (1.11-3.39), p = 0.01] and had provided care for a smaller number of terminally ill patients [AOR = 1.74, CI (1.01-2.97), p = 0.04] were significantly associated with nurses' attitude towards end-of-life care. CONCLUSION The study highlighted that nurses' knowledge about palliative care is inadequate, and showed a less favorable attitude toward end-of-life care. The findings also provide evidence for greater attentions and resources should be directed towards educating and supporting nurses caring for patients with palliative care needs in Wollega Zones.

Abstract
Depression in older population is more common now. Due to increasing numbers of older patients in hospitals, nurses have more opportunities to care for these patients. Therefore, nurses should have correct knowledge of late-life depression and more favorable attitudes about depression. The study aimed to understand hospital nurses' knowledge level of late-life depression and attitudes about depression. A cross-sectional research design was used. A convenience sample of 307 nurses from 3 hospitals in Taiwan was recruited. Nurses scored 55.15% in the Late-Life Depression Quiz. The average score of the Revised Depression Attitude Questionnaire was 71.76 (SD = 6.13). The study also found that hospital nurses had more favorable attitudes about depression when their late-life depression knowledge was higher; their interest level in providing care for older patients with depression was greater; they had ever taken care of older patients with depressive symptoms or depression; they had never received in-service training on depression in the past year; and they had ever attended lectures about depression in school. Hospital nurses' knowledge about late-life depression was limited, and they had neutral to slightly favorable attitudes about depression in Taiwan. It is suggested to carefully examine and evaluate in-service training related to depression for nurses in hospitals. In addition, developing appropriate interventions to increase hospital nurses' knowledge level of late-life depression and attitudes toward depression is recommended.

Abstract
Nurses play an integral role in high-quality patient care. Thus, their skills in providing end-of-life care should be assessed and continually enhanced. Education intended to improve end-of-life skills must address the affective/emotional component of nursing care. Evidence demonstrates that emotional engagement and resilience among health care providers are correlated with improved quality outcomes and, conversely, that burnout and stress negatively affect patient safety. Addressing the emotional needs of health care providers is critical to improving quality throughout the health care system. An evidence-based workshop was implemented among direct care staff on a hospital-based palliative care unit, with the goal of fostering emotional engagement to improve staff perceptions and attitudes about caring for patients at or near the end of life. Although perceptions about quality of death were not affected by this intervention, there was a significant improvement in attitudes about end-of-life nursing care. Qualitative feedback also reflected appreciation for small group discussions and opportunities to debrief with peers away from the unit. This intervention reflected the value of emotional engagement in educational efforts to improve end-of-life nursing care.

Abstract
Background Nurses have a primary role in providing palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care. Their knowledge of EOL care, attitudes toward care of the dying, and palliative care self-efficacy are important in care delivery. Little is known regarding palliative care preparedness among Mongolian nurses. This study examines palliative care knowledge, attitude towards death and dying, and self-efficacy among Mongolian nurses, and examines predictors of self-efficacy. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. Participants were 141 nurses employed at the National Cancer Center in Mongolia. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Results The median score for the knowledge of palliative care was 8.0/20. “Psychosocial and spiritual care” was the lowest score on the palliative care knowledge subscale. The mean score for attitude toward care of the dying was 69.1%, indicating positive attitudes. The mean score for the palliative care self-efficacy was 33.8/48. Nurses reported low self-efficacy toward communicating with dying patients and their families, and managing delirium. Palliative care knowledge and duration of experience as an oncology nurse significantly predicted self-efficacy toward palliative care, accounting for 14.0% of the variance. Conclusions Palliative education for nurses should address the knowledge gaps in EOL care and focus in increasing palliative care self-efficacy. Considering palliative care knowledge and nursing experience as an oncology nurse were significant predictors of self-efficacy toward palliative care, more effort is needed to fill the knowledge gaps in EOL care among nurses, especially for less experienced nurses.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe nurses' experiences of palliative care for older people with advanced dementia living in residential aged care units. BACKGROUND Dementia is a global health problem and the number of older people with dementia who need palliative care is increasing. Previous research has revealed that care for older people with dementia in the final stage of life is usually complex. However, little is known about how nurses experience palliative care for older people with advanced dementia living in residential aged care units. METHOD Nine individual, semi-structured face-to-face interviews with nurses working in residential aged care units for older people with advanced dementia in palliative care in Western Sweden were analysed using qualitative inductive content analysis. The COREQ checklist was followed. RESULTS The nurses considered that palliative care for older people with advanced dementia is a complex and challenging form of care. In particular, they identified three challenges that must be met: developing specialised knowledge and skills, developing teamwork as a working method and creating a caring relationship. CONCLUSIONS The results of our analysis indicate that if nurses are aware of and understand that the challenges are essential for "joining all the pieces together," the palliative care for older people with advanced dementia may become a positive experience for nurses and may increase their sense of satisfaction and security in their professional role. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE For the palliative care to be successful, the nurses need to "join all the pieces together," that is succeed in developing specialised knowledge and skills, developing teamwork as a working method and creating a caring relationship to establish a person-centred care with the older person with advanced dementia and with his or her relatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palliative care is a patient-centred, integrated approach for improving quality of life for both patients facing life-threatening illnesses and for their families. Although there has been increased interest in palliative care for non-cancer patients, the palliative care competency of nurses who care for non-cancer patients has rarely been investigated. This study described the palliative care knowledge, attitude, confidence, and educational needs in nurses who care for patients with congestive heart failure, stroke, end-stage renal disease, and end-stage liver disease; explored the relationships between those variables; and identified factors affecting nurses' palliative care confidence. METHODS A cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design was employed; data collection was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea. Nurses who were working in general wards and intensive care units (N = 102) completed valid and reliable self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, frequencies, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regression were conducted to analyse the data. RESULTS Nurses' palliative care knowledge level was low (9.73 ± 2.10; range = 0-20) and their attitude toward palliative care was moderate (87.97 ± 6.93, range: 30-120). Knowledge was significantly correlated with attitude (r = .29, p = .003). Nurses were highly confident in pain and symptom management but demonstrated high educational needs for managing human and material resources to provide palliative care. Previous training in hospice, palliative, and EOL care was a significant and modifiable factor that affected nurses' confidence (std. β = 0.25, p = .010). CONCLUSIONS To facilitate high-quality palliative care for non-cancer patients and families, nursing education programs should be developed to address nurses' knowledge level, confidence level, and educational needs. This study provides relevant information that can be utilised to develop palliative care educational programs for nurses who care for non-cancer patients.

Abstract
BackgroundPalliative care knowledge is essential in primary healthcare due to the increasing number of patients who require attention in the final stage of their life. Health professionals (physicians and nurses) need to acquire specific knowledge and abilities to provide high-quality palliative care. The development of education programmes in palliative care is necessary. The Palliative Care Knowledge Test (PCKT) is a questionnaire that evaluates the basic knowledge about palliative care, but it has not been adapted into Spanish, and its effectiveness and utility for Spanish culture have not been analysed.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to report the translation into Spanish and a psychometric analysis of the PCKT.MethodsThe questionnaire survey was validated with a group of 561 physicians and nurses. The PCKT Spanish Version (PCKT-SV) was obtained from a process, including translation, back translation and revision by experts and a pilot study. The content validity and reliability of the questionnaire were analysed.ResultsThe results showed internal consistency and reliability indexes similar to those obtained by the original version of PCKT.ConclusionThe PCKT-SV is a useful instrument for measuring Spanish-speaking physician and nurse knowledge of palliative care, and it is suitable to evaluate the effectiveness of training activities in palliative care.

Abstract
To effectively participate in provision of palliative care, nurses need to possess a combination of knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes in equal measure in a way that is sensitive and meaningful and in a dynamic manner. The aim of this review was to examine nurses' knowledge and attitudes about palliative care, to identify gaps to improve care of patients and families facing death. An integrative review method guided this review. After implementation of a search strategy, data from 26 studies were analyzed and synthesized. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies. Data were extracted using a common table, and themes were generated from the available peer-reviewed studies using narrative synthesis. Findings revealed knowledge deficit but favorable attitudes toward palliative care among nurses. Education and the clinical experience of nurses in palliative care influenced their knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care. There is a need for mandatory inclusion of basic palliative care content in nursing school curricula and more in-depth postgraduate curricula. In clinical practice, there is a need to reinforce palliative care education by creating expert nurse support networks to model excellence in palliative care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare perceptions of various aspects of palliative care for doctors and nurses; and examine factors contributing to perceived quality palliative care in intensive care units (ICUs). DESIGN A cross-sectional survey study conducted from November to December 2013. Questionnaires used were Knowledge, Attitudinal and Experiential Survey on Advance Directives (ADs), Clarke's Quality of Palliative Care and Nurses' Participation in the end-of-life (EOL) decision-making process. SETTING Seven adult medical and surgical ICUs at a medical center in Northern Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS In total, 172 doctors and nurses who worked in adult ICU for more than 3 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Nurses' and doctors' perception of quality palliative care. RESULTS Nurses provided better care than doctors in symptom management, comfort care and spiritual care; their participation in EOL decision-making was the sole modifiable contributor to perceived quality palliative care in ICUs (β = 0.24, P < 0.01). Both doctors and nurses had positive attitudes towards ADs (mean = 4.05/10; standard deviation [SD] = 1.38) while their knowledge of ADs was poor (mean = 29.72/40; SD = 3.00). More than half of nurses currently participated in EOL decision-making and over 80% of doctors and nurses agreed both parties should engage in EOL decision-making process. Majority of doctors (83.9%) reckoned nurses agreed with their EOL decisions while a significant percentage (40%) of nurses were uncertain about doctors' decisions (χ2 = 12.07, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Nurses' participation in EOL decision-making and strengthening spiritual care are imperative to rendering quality palliative care in ICUs. Potential disagreements arose during EOL decision-making between doctors and nurses; and insufficient knowledge of ADs should be addressed.

Abstract
Studies have shown that registered nurses are inadequately prepared to care for patients requiring hospice and palliative care. Reasons include inadequate curriculum, along with a lack of structured education related to hospice/palliative care and symptom management, which includes inadequate education on delivering home-based hospice/palliative case management. Challenges at the Southwestern Hospice Organization are consistent with industry standards, evidenced by a high level of afterhours triage phone calls related to ineffective case management setup and delivery upon patient admission to hospice service. Many of these triage inquires could be prevented with improved registered nurse case management education and subsequent execution. Through analyzing Southwestern Hospice Organization afterhours triage phone data, a deficiency in effective patient case management setup and delivery was defined. Best practices in hospice/palliative case management were then identified, and a quality improvement plan in the form of a nurse driven, hands-on, home hospice/palliative case management simulation was generated. Quality improvement for patient case management at the Southwestern Hospice Organization was the end goal.

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to validate the Self-Efficacy in Palliative Care Scale (SEPC) in Spanish nursing professionals and students, to describe their levels of self-efficacy, and to determine the influencing factors. A validation study and a cross-sectional descriptive study were carried out, with the data analysed using contrast tests and multiple linear regression; 552 nurses and 440 nursing students participated. The Spanish version consists of 23 items and has a high degree of reliability (α = 0.944). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed one additional factor (i.e., management of psychosocial and spiritual aspects) in comparison to the original scale. Contrast tests revealed that the mean SEPC score was higher in professionals than in students (p < 0.001) and that the professionals who had higher levels of self-efficacy were older (p < 0.001), had more previous training (p < 0.001), and had more experience in end-of-life care (p = 0.001). The linear analysis results confirm a significant association between age and previous training in end-of-life care. The Spanish version of the SEPC is a reliable tool for both nursing professionals and students. The level of self-efficacy of both groups is moderate and is influenced by age, experience, and training in end-of-life care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palliative care (PC) is associated with increased quality of life for individuals with life-limiting illnesses. Despite growing recognition of the need for public advocacy and involvement, data on public perception of PC are limited. We sought to examine patterns of beliefs, sociodemographic differences, and the impact of information source on perceptions of PC. MEASURES AND INTERVENTION Data were analyzed from the 2018 Health Information National Trends Survey, a representative sample of public knowledge on cancer-related information. Prevalence of perceptions was estimated among adults who self-identified as knowledgeable about PC; multivariable logistic regression invoking stepwise variable selection was used to determine associations with perceptions. OUTCOMES Overall, 42.5% automatically thought of death when thinking about PC, and 31.7% equate PC with hospice care. Lower proportions perceived PC as incompatible with curative medical therapy: 15.1% believed PC means giving up, and 14.5% believed PC requires the discontinuation of other treatments. Perceptions varied by age, race, education attainment, income, and marital status. In adjusted models, source of PC information was not related to differences in PC perception: PC is giving up (P ≥ 0.28), requirement to stop curative therapy (P ≥ 0.07), and equation with hospice care (P ≥ 0.29). CONCLUSIONS Six in every 10 American adults knowledgeable about PC have at least one documented misperception, with differential beliefs by sociodemographic groups. Source of information had little impact on PC beliefs. These findings may help focus future measures to educate the public about the role of PC in health care and address gaps in knowledge.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop an end-of-life (EOL) care nursing attitude scale for Japanese geriatric nurses (ELNAS-JG). The items of the ELNAS-JG were developed to cover important topics related to EOL care (eg, motivation for providing EOL care, pain and symptom management, and decision-making support care for older adults). Participants were 1663 nurses employed in 32 institutions across Japan. Of these, 1298 participants were analyzed. An exploratory factor analysis of the 26 scale items revealed a 3-factor solution describing the concepts of responsibility, willingness, and confidence: responsibility and willingness were captured in factor 1 (16 items), and confidence was split into factor 2 (6 items) and factor 3 (4 items) to capture individual and collaborative behaviors. The overall Cronbach α coefficient for the 26 items was 0.95, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.83. Overall, the ELNAS-JG was confirmed to have good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, known-groups validity, and construct validity. It can comprehensively measure nurses' attitudes toward EOL care for older adults in any EOL setting. Furthermore, this scale can be used to evaluate educational programs aimed at improving care quality and encouraging related activities in facilities that provide EOL care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In research on co-creation in nursing, a caring manner can be used to create opportunities for the patient to reach vital goals and thereby increase the patient's quality of life in palliative home care. This can be described as an ethical cornerstone and the goal of palliative care. Nurses must be extra sensitive to patients' and their relatives' needs with regard to ethical and existential issues and situations in home care encounters, especially at the end of life. AIM The aim of this study was to explore nurses' experiences of dealing with ethical and existential issues through co-creation at the end of life in palliative home care. RESEARCH DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS, AND RESEARCH CONTEXT The material consisted of texts from interviews with 12 nurses in a home care context. A hermeneutical approach was used, and the method was inspired by a thematic analysis. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS Informed consent was sought from the participants regarding study participation and the storage and handling of data for research purposes. Ethical permission to conduct the study was given from organizations that participated in this study. FINDINGS A main theme and four subthemes emerged. The main theme was "Deep co-creative relationships are needed to manage ethical and existential issues at the end of life." A model was created to display the findings and relations between ethical issues and situations and the need for a deep trustful caring relationship to solve problems in palliative home care. DISCUSSION Together, the themes can be considered as a tool for learning and dealing with ethical and existential issues at the end of life in home care. The themes can also be seen as a part of nurses' ethical competence within this context. CONCLUSION The quality of life at the end of life can be improved through co-creation, despite difficult ethical and existential issues. Future research should focus on co-creation from the patients' perspective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the growing aging population, continual increase of the number of the old, and increase of cancer survival rate, palliative care is being considered a global public health issue. As a core force for the sustainable development of the nursing field, undergraduate nursing students' knowledge about and attitudes toward palliative care will directly affect the quality of care for dying patients in the future. OBJECTIVE To investigate undergraduate nursing students' knowledge about and attitudes toward palliative care and analyze their influencing factors. METHODS This descriptive and cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2016. A total of 1200 Chinese undergraduate nursing students were randomly selected as the survey subjects using stratified sampling method. The revised palliative care quiz for nursing (PCQN) and a self-designed questionnaire were used to measure students' knowledge and attitudes. RESULTS The mean score of the revised PCQN was 16.10 ± 5.04. Only a few respondents (19.8%) expressed desire to work in palliative care in the future. The findings show that knowledge and school, grade, gender, birthplace, and religious beliefs have statistically significant impacts (P < 0.01). In addition, logistic regression analysis showed that talking about death and caring for dying family members can have a significant influence on students' attitudes (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION At present, Chinese undergraduate nursing students' knowledge about palliative care is minimal with the majority holding negative attitudes. Thus, the development of an effective end-of-life care program for nursing students is critical.

Abstract
Background Over the past five decades, palliative care has changed from helping patients at the end of life into a highly dedicated service focused on delivering supportive care to patients with life-limiting illnesses throughout the disease trajectory. To date there is no common agreement on universally applicable measurement tool to know the areas of weakness in physicians’ understanding of palliative care and identifying misconceptions about palliative care. This paper describes the development of a reliable and valid questionnaire to provide a measure of the attitude and knowledge of physicians toward palliative care (PCAK). Methods Item pool was generated paying particular attention to content and face validity. The initial version of the questionnaire was piloted and assessed based on psychometric criteria. Items which did not reach acceptable validity were excluded, and the final 37 item version was administered to two groups differing in their palliative care attitude and knowledge on two occasions to assess the construct validity and test-retest reliability. Two hundred thirty two physicians working in primary care clinics and general hospitals completed the questionnaire at the piloting stage. The final version (PCAK) was administered to 35 oncologists and 76 physicians. SPSS v20 was used for statistical analysis. Results Of the Pilot study, 20 items were excluded because didn’t meet the criteria for item difficulty and discrimination. Item-to-total-score correlations (r) was ranging from 0.347 up to 0.806. Internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) was high ranging from 0.636 to 0.824. While testing the final PCAK, oncologist scored consistently higher than the other physicians on all sections of the questionnaire (P < 0.001) suggesting good construct validity. Test to retest reliability for each section was very high, ranging from 0.879 to 0.97 and the overall reliability was 0.95. The internal consistency reliability of each section was very good ranging from 0.681 ± 0.893. Conclusion The findings demonstrate that PCAK meets psychometric criteria for reliability and construct validity. It provides a useful scale to assess the attitude and knowledge of physicians about palliative care helping in planning of educational programs for physicians. Abstract
BACKGROUND The provision of high-quality palliative care in nursing homes (NHs) is a major challenge and places demands on the knowledge and skills of the staff. AIM This study assesses the palliative care knowledge of staff in NHs in Europe. DESIGN Cross-sectional study using structured survey Setting/participants: Nurses and care assistants working in 322 representative samples of NHs in Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Finland, Poland and Italy. Palliative care knowledge is measured with the Palliative Care Survey. Scores on the scales range between 0 and 1; higher scores indicate more knowledge. RESULTS A total of 3392 NH-staff were given a questionnaire, and 2275 responded (67%). Knowledge of basic palliative care issues ranged between 0.20 in Poland (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.19; 0.24) and 0.61 in Belgium (95% CI 0.59; 0.63), knowledge of physical aspects that can contribute to pain ranged between 0.81 in Poland (95% CI 0.79; 0.84) and 0.91 in the Netherlands (95% CI 0.89; 0.93), and knowledge of psychological reasons that can contribute to pain ranged between 0.56 in England (95% CI 0.50; 0.62) and 0.87 in Finland (95% CI 0.83; 0.90). Factors associated with knowledge were country, professional role and having undertaken formal training in palliative care. CONCLUSIONS Knowledge of nurses and care assistants concerning basic palliative care issues appears to be suboptimal in all participating countries, although there is substantial heterogeneity. Education of nursing staff needs to be improved across, but each country may require its own strategy to address the unique and specific knowledge gaps.
