Abstract
OBJECTIVES : American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) peoples experience type 2 diabetes (T2DM) at double the rate of White Americans and have 2.3 times greater mortality. Glycemic control is a central goal of diabetes management and is associated with superior physical outcomes and quality of life. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify and synthesize all factors that influence glycemic control among AI/AN people with T2DM. DESIGN This is a systematic review guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. PubMed, CINAHL, PsychInfo, Embase and Web of Science were searched using terms related to "type 2 diabetes" and "American Indian/Alaska Native" from 2008-2023. RESULTS Thirty-three studies were identified. Factors related to glycemic control were 1) healthcare interventions, 2) social determinants of health, 3) self-care behaviors, 4) mental health and psychological factors, and 5) genetic factors. Few factors were consistently associated with improved glycemic control. Multidisciplinary care models that integrate community members providing education/healthcare referrals, and medication adherence had the strongest signals with improved glycemic control. While some studies found relationships between glycemic control and diet, exercise and depression, others did not. CONCLUSION While more work is needed to understand influencers of glycemic control in this population, community health representatives, medication adherence and healthcare utilization should be leveraged to improve glycemic control. Future work among AI/AN people with T2DM should focus on how structural and societal factors, like health policy, built environment, and social environment, impact the performance of self-care behaviors and influence glycemic control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quality of life (QoL) is a common indicator of outcomes in people living with diabetes, but the concept of diabetes-related QoL (DRQoL) remains unclear. Clarifying core knowledge of DRQoL was the goal of this paper. METHODS A concept analysis was conducted according to Walker and Avant's framework. A systematic search of the published literature was conducted between 2002 and 2022 based on resource availability, current relevancy, and the quality of recent studies. Three major databases were used to identify the attributes, antecedents, consequences, and measures for DRQoL. Only articles investigating DRQoL among adult or elderly people living with diabetes that were published in English in peer-reviewed journals were analyzed. RESULTS In total, 4342 articles were screened, and only 401 articles underwent eligibility assessment. A total of 183 articles were included in the analysis. Most (59.78%) of them were observational studies and DRQoL as a primary outcome. We identified four critical components of DRQoL: (a) general health, (b) diabetes-related satisfaction, (c) diabetes impact, and (d) diabetes self-management. The antecedents were classified according to their contributions to DRQoL as follows: 25 positive-induced, 4 neutral-based, and 19 negative-induced antecedents. The consequences of DRQoL were mortality risk, personal health, satisfaction with health care, hospitalization risk, and failure to return to work. The referents varied widely, and 32 tools were found for DRQoL measurement. Furthermore, 12 scales for disease-specific DRQoL and 17 tools for general QoL were identified. CONCLUSION This paper provides a definition of DRQoL as well as its attributes, antecedents, consequences, and measures in adults with diabetes. The attributes of DRQoL included general health, diabetes-related satisfaction, diabetes impact, and diabetes self-management. A comprehensive understanding of DRQoL can improve the quality of care and can aid in the recognition of the needs of care among people living with diabetes.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes disparities in the USA persist in both the prevalence of disease and diabetes-related complications. We conducted a literature review related to diabetes prevention, management, and complications across racial and ethnic groups in the USA. The objective of this review is to summarise the current understanding of diabetes disparities by examining differences between and within racial and ethnic groups and among young people (aged <18 years). We also examine the pathophysiology of diabetes as it relates to race and ethnic differences. We use a conceptual framework built on the socioecological model to categorise the causes of diabetes disparities across the lifespan looking at factors in five domains of health behaviours and social norms, public awareness, structural racism, economic development, and access to high-quality care. The range of disparities in diabetes prevalence and management in the USA calls for a community-engaged and multidisciplinary approach that must involve community partners, researchers, practitioners, health system administrators, and policy makers. We offer recommendations for each of these groups to help to promote equity in diabetes prevention and care in the USA.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a critical Indigenous health inequity rooted in experiences of colonization and marginalization including disproportionate exposure to stressors, disruption of traditional family and food systems, and attacks on cultural practices that have led to more sedentary lifestyles. Thus, an important step in redressing inequities is building awareness of and interventions attuned to unique Indigenous contexts influencing T2D and Indigenous culture as a pathway to community wellbeing. Using a dynamic, stage-based model of intervention development and evaluation, we detail the creation and evolution of a family-based, culturally centered T2D preventive intervention: Together on Diabetes (later Together Overcoming Diabetes) (TOD). The TOD program was built by and for Indigenous communities via community-based participatory research and has been implemented across diverse cultural contexts. The TOD curriculum approaches health through a holistic lens of spiritual, mental, physical and emotional wellness. Preliminary evidence suggests TOD is effective in reducing diabetes risk factors including lowering BMI and depressive symptoms, and the program is viewed favorably by participants and community members. We discuss lessons learned regarding collaborative intervention development and adaptation across Indigenous cultures, as well as future directions for TOD.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The present review focuses on the epidemiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Indigenous communities in the continental United States (U.S.)-including disease prevention and management-and discusses special considerations in conducting research with Indigenous communities. RECENT FINDINGS Previous studies have reported the disparately high prevalence of diabetes, especially T2D, among Indigenous peoples in the U.S. The high prevalence and incidence of early-onset T2D in Indigenous youth relative to that of all youth in the U.S. population pose challenges to the prevention of complications of diabetes. Behavioral, dietary, lifestyle, and genetic factors associated with T2D in Indigenous communities are often investigated. More limited is the discussion of the historical and ongoing consequences of colonization and displacement that impact the aforementioned risk factors. Future research is necessary to assess community-specific needs with respect to diabetes prevention and management across the diversity of Indigenous communities in the U.S.

Abstract
Poor glucose control can be viewed as a stressor, possibly promulgating diabetes distress. We examined the relationship between perceived blood glucose control and diabetes distress over time using a partially controlled cross-lagged path analysis model. After controlling for demographics, control at 6 months was directly related to change in distress at 12 months. Subsequently, distress at 12 months was directly related to change in control at 18 months. Both 6-month control and distress had significant indirect effects on 18-month control and distress. This demonstrates the nuanced bi-directional relationship between the stress of poor perceived control and diabetes distress.

Abstract
American Indian health disparities have reached crisis levels, and there is a need to develop culturally congruent interventions through meaningful tribal involvement and ethical community-oriented approaches. Hence, it is imperative that researchers and university administrators better understand how research translation occurs for tribally driven health-equity research projects. Utilizing thematic analysis methods, the authors examined documents from a 12-year community-based participatory research partnership to elucidate factors that ignite momentum and support partnership longevity. The overarching finding was that trust and respect provide a foundation for momentum and longevity and are closely intertwined with other themes identified in analyses. Seven themes were extrapolated and classified into two domains: (1) investments, which are catalyzing factors that advance research, and (2) intermediate processes, which link investments to success. Investment themes include Indigenous scholar involvement, time and effort, establishing rapport, and clear and appropriate communication. Intermediate process themes include generative colearning, active participation, and recognition and celebration. Community-based participatory research principles were reflected in these findings. This study also upholds prior published work on Indigenous research methodologies, promotes the lived experiences of Indigenous people, and contributes to Indigenous theory building and science.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Indigenous people experience the greatest cardiometabolic disease disparity in the Unites States, yet high cardiometabolic disease risk factors do not fully explain the extent of the cardiometabolic disease disparity for Indigenous people. Stress, trauma, and racism occur at high rates within Indigenous communities and have not been well explored as significant contributors to cardiometabolic disease disparities despite emerging literature, and therefore will be described here. METHODS This descriptive study explores the relationship between cardiometabolic disease risks and Indigenous-specific stressors (e.g., early childhood stress and trauma, adulthood stress and trauma, and historical and intergenerational trauma) using current literature. Indigenous-specific protective factors against cardiometabolic disease are also reviewed. RESULTS Increasing research indicates that there is a relationship between Indigenous-specific stressful and traumatic life experiences and increased cardiometabolic disease risk. Mental health and psychophysiology play an important role in this relationship. Effective interventions to reduce cardiometabolic disease risk in Indigenous communities focus on ameliorating the negative effects of these stressors through the use of culturally specific health behaviors and activities. CONCLUSIONS There is increasing evidence that cultural connection and enculturation are protective factors for cardiometabolic disease, and may be galvanized through Indigenous-led training, research, and policy change.

Abstract
This meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively assess the effects of long-term air pollution exposure on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Studies were selected from three electronic databases. Random- or fixed-effect model was used to obtain the pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and corresponding 95% confidential intervals (CIs). Stratified analyses by regions of the studies and length of follow-up were conducted to assess the effects in different subgroups. Sensitivity analyses by omitted studies one by one, as well as adjusting certain confounding factors, were also conducted. The search resulted in 1878 studies, among which 16 studies with 18 cohorts were included. The incidence of T2DM was significantly associated with 10 μg/m3 increase of PM2.5 (overall HR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.19) and PM10 (overall HR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.23) exposure. Stratified analyses confirmed that PM2.5 was significantly associated with increased T2DM incidence in American countries but not European countries. The results in the long follow-up subgroup also confirmed that exposure of PM2.5 and PM10 was associated with increased T2DM incidence. Interestingly, educational level and gender could potentially affect the impacts of PM10 and PM2.5 on T2DM incidence. The findings show long-term exposure to PM2.5, and PM10 could significantly increase the incidence of T2DM, especially in cohorts with long follow-up time.

Methods To create a conceptual model representing the quality of life of low-income people with type 2 diabetes in the Philippines, 117 low-income adult participants in a public support group were studied, and the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores on quality of life (QOL) were analyzed in terms of their relationships with the following factors: basic attributes, physical factors (glycated hemoglobin level, complications, comorbidities, and symptoms), social factors (support, education, and financial status), and cognitive factors (knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and self-management behavior). Results Based on correlation coefficients among variables and goodness-of-fit test results through a path analysis, 2 models representing causal relationships were created, both of which showed sufficient goodness-of-fit. Conclusion Glycated hemoglobin levels, knowledge of blood glucose levels, self-efficacy, and self-management behavior (exercise) influenced PCS scores, while age, glycated hemoglobin levels, neuropathy, knowledge of insulin, self-efficacy, and self-management behavior (exercise) influenced MCS scores. The influence of self-efficacy was prominent in both cases, providing an important insight for healthcare professionals to develop effective support methods.

Abstract
American Indian (AI) communities experience a disproportionate rate of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cumulative exposure to stress. Although this link is well researched among various populations, it has not been examined among AI communities. Path analysis was used to examine a multiple-mediator model to explain how caregiver stress influences self-reported mental and physical health among 100 AI participants with T2D. Caregiver stress was negatively associated with physical and mental health. Physical health was positively associated with family/community connectedness and mental health was positively associated with both family support and connectedness. The relationship between caregiver stress and mental health was partially mediated by family/community connectedness; caregiver stress had no indirect effects on physical health via either hypothesized mediator. Findings demonstrate the importance of integrating individuals' connection to family and community and its influence on caregiver stress and mental health in intervention programs targeting diabetes management and care among AI communities.
