Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation of serum uric acid (SUA) levels with ventricular diastolic dysfunction (DD) in the diabetic population. METHODS Clinical data from 702 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), including 394 males and 308 females, were retrospectively analyzed in this study. The data included demographic characteristics, biochemical test results, and echocardiography findings. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between SUA and DD. Additionally, the diagnostic efficacies of SUA and the multivariate logistic regression model (Logit P) for DD were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS Compared to T2DM patients with normal diastolic function, those with DD had a higher prevalence of hypertension, older age, longer diabetes duration, elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), total cholesterol (TC), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), SUA, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), as well as lower levels of 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (P<0.05). As indicated by the Logistic regression analysis, gender, age, and SUA were independent risk factors for DD (P<0.05). Women had a 47.8% lower risk of DD compared to men [95% CI (0.318-0.718)]. The risk of DD increased by 6.8% for each one-year rise in age [OR 1.068, 95% CI (1.051-1.085)] and by 0.5% for each 1 mmol/L increase in SUA [OR 1.005, 95% CI (1.003-1.007)]. The regression model incorporating sex, age, and SUA exhibited an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.753 (95% CI 0.712-0.794) for diagnosing DD, with a sensitivity of 65.65% and specificity of 78.65%. CONCLUSIONS Gender, age, and SUA were independent factors influencing the development of DD in T2DM patients. Among them, SUA is the only modifiable factor. Early and long-term control of SUA levels is essential to reduce the risk of DD in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Background Serum uric acid (SUA) levels has been considered a possible risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) for many years. Since SUA levels are greatly affected by medications, diet, and metabolism, the association between SUA and CAD has been controversial for centuries. While, the state of hyperuricemia (HUA) has been proven to have a negative impact on CAD in previous studies, there are still few clinical and epidemiological studies of HUA in CAD. In particular, evidence of this association is limited in postmenopausal women. This study explored the influence of SUA levels and HUA on CAD in this demographic group. Methods In total, 5435 postmenopausal women were allocated to either a non-CAD group (n = 2021) or a CAD group (n = 3414). Regression analyses, including generalized linear models (GLM), correlation analysis, comparison between stratified groups, and analysis by use of diuretics were carried out on data obtained in this study. Results SUA and HUA were found to associate significantly with CAD by univariate logistic regression analysis. In addition, GLM showed nonlinear response of CAD probability with increasing level of SUA. In multivariate analysis, we found that SUA and HUA were independently related to CAD. Correlation analysis showed that SUA and HUA both correlated positively with CAD (p < 0.001). By comparing the stratified age groups, we found that the differences among the age groups were significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions SUA and HUA were shown to be independently associated with CAD among postmenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The impact of serum uric acid (sUA) levels on the clinical prognosis and severity of coronary artery disease in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and hypertension after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is not fully clear. This study aimed to assess the association among sUA levels, clinical prognosis and severity of coronary artery disease in patients with ACS and hypertension after PCI. DESIGN In this prospective cohort study, we followed-up patients with ACS and hypertension after PCI for 1 year to explore the risk factors for 1 year total major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) and multivessel coronary artery disease, the dose-effect relationship among sUA levels, MACEs and severity of coronary artery disease and correlation between sUA levels and severity of coronary artery disease (Gensini score). SETTING/PATIENTS Several Chinese internists followed-up 422 patients who were diagnosed with ACS and hypertension after PCI in a large tertiary hospital of Qingdao during the period from 1 June 2019 to 1 December 2019. OUTCOME MEASURES One-year follow-up MACEs results and coronary angiography results. RESULTS In the coronary angiography results, multivessel coronary artery disease (28.5% vs 21.4%, p=0.006) and non-culprit lesion vascular occlusion (11.7% vs 5.3%, p=0.042) were more common in the hyperuricaemia group, and the Gensini score (26.69±13.46 vs 17.66±10.57, p<0.001) was also higher. In the results of 1-year MACEs, the incidence of all-cause mortality (3.5% vs 2.5%, p=0.037), PCI or coronary artery bypass grafting therapy due to myocardial infarction or angina pectoris (15.1% vs 7.6%, p=0.027), medication conservative therapy in hospital due to myocardial infarction or angina pectoris (12.9% vs 6.7%, p=0.041) and total MACEs (31.8% vs 16.9%, p=0.001) were higher in patients with hyperuricaemia. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis models showed that hyperuricaemia was still an independent risk factor for total MACEs within 1 year (OR=2.618, 95% CI 1.656 to 4.139, p<0.001; OR=1.920, 95% CI 1.158 to 3.183, p=0.011, respectively) and multivessel coronary artery disease (OR=2.140, 95% CI 1.371 to 3.342, p=0.001; OR=1.688, 95% CI 1.051 to 2.710, p=0.030, respectively) after adjusting for confounding factors. The severity of coronary artery disease (non-culprit lesion vascular occlusion (4.7% vs 8.4% vs 9.6% vs 16.2%, p=0.041); multivessel coronary artery disease (17.9% vs 22.4% vs 29.8% vs 35.2%, p=0.022); Gensini score (16.96±10.35 vs 19.31±10.63 vs 26.12±11.48 vs 33.33±14.01, p<0.001)) and the incidence of total MACEs (13.2% vs 14.2% vs 34.6% vs 41%, p<0.001) increased significantly with the sUA levels increasing. Further, the Gensini score was positively correlated with uric acid levels (r=0.515, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Hyperuricaemia is an independent risk factor for 1-year total MACEs and multivessel coronary artery disease in patients with ACS and hypertension after PCI.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) is the final product of the catabolism of endogenous and exogenous purine nucleotides. While its association with articular gout and kidney disease has been known for a long time, new data have demonstrated that UA is also related to cardiovascular (CV) diseases. UA has been identified as a significant determinant of many different outcomes, such as all-cause and CV mortality, and also of CV events (mainly Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) and even strokes). Furthermore, UA has been related to the development of Heart Failure, and to a higher mortality in decompensated patients, as well as to the onset of atrial fibrillation. After a brief introduction on the general role of UA in CV disorders, this review will be focused on UA's relationship with CV outcomes, as well as on the specific features of patients with ACS and Chronic Coronary Syndrome. Finally, two issues which remain open will be discussed: the first is about the identification of a CV UA cut-off value, while the second concerns the possibility that the pharmacological reduction of UA is able to lower the incidence of CV events.

Abstract
To improve the treatment of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), personalized treatments based on potential biomarkers could make a difference. To investigate if such potential biomarkers could be found for CHD inhomogeneous, we combined traditional Chinese medicine based diagnosis with untargeted and targeted metabolomics analyses. Shi and Xu patient subtype groups of CHD with angina pectoris were identified. Different metabolites including lipids, fatty acids and amino acids were further analyzed with targeted metabolomics and mapped to disease-related pathways. The long-chain unsaturated lipids ceramides metabolism, bile acid metabolism were differentially affected in the Xu subtype groups. While, Shi-subtype patients seemed to show inflammation, anomalous levels of bioactive phospholipids and antioxidant molecules. Furthermore, variations in the endothelial damage response and energy metabolism found based on ELISA analysis are the key divergence points between different CHD subtypes. The results showed Xu subtype patients might benefit from long-chain unsaturated lipids ceramides as therapeutic targets. Shi subtype patients might benefit more from levels of polyunsaturated fatty acid consumption and treatments that help in restoring energy balance. Metabolic differences can be essential for treatment protocols. Thus, patient group specific differences can serve as important information to refine current treatment approaches in a personalized manner.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Uric acid has been related to a tendency to precipitate to form crystals, presenting asymptomatically, until the formation of arthritis, tophi or renal lithiasis. Previously, the presence of asymptomatic hyperuricaemia has been associated with the presence of cardiovascular disease. OBJECTIVES To determine the association of complex coronary artery disease in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricaemia. MATERIAL AND METHODS An observational retrospective, transversal, unicentric study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Mexico, in the period from June 2017 to March 2019. All patients admitted for coronary angiography were included; patients with gout, use of diuretics and chronic kidney disease were excluded. RESULTS During the study period, a total of 300 patients were collected, of which 40% presented hyperuricaemia. The patients with hyperuricaemia were older (59 vs. 63, P = .002). The group of patients with asymptomatic hyperuricaemia had a higher proportion of complex coronary lesions (64 vs. 35%, P ≤ .0001) as well as a higher SYNTAX I score (27 vs. 17, P ≤ .001). There was a higher probability of presenting complex coronary lesions in this group of patients (OR 3.4, P ≤ .0001). In addition, in the group division of uric acid levels, it was related to the presence of complex coronary lesions (Q1 = .5, P = .06), (Q2 = 2, P = .01) and (Q3 = 3, P ≤ .0001). CONCLUSION Asymptomatic hyperuricaemia has a higher prevalence and association of presenting complex coronary lesions.

Serum uric acid and fatal myocardial infarction: detection of prognostic cut-off values: The URRAH (Uric Acid Right for Heart Health) study. J Hypertens 2021; 38:412-419. Abstract
Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text Objective: The Working Group on Uric Acid and Cardiovascular Risk of the Italian Society of Hypertension conceived and designed an ad-hoc study aimed at searching for prognostic cut-off values of serum uric acid (SUA) in predicting fatal myocardial infaction (MI) in women and men. Methods: The URic acid Right for heArt Health study is a nationwide, multicentre, observational cohort study involving data on individuals aged 18–95 years recruited on a regional community basis from all the territory of Italy under the patronage of the Italian Society of Hypertension with a mean follow-up period of 122.3 ± 66.9 months. Results: A total of 23 467 individuals were included in the analysis. Cut-off values of SUA able to discriminate MI status were identified by mean of receiver operating characteristic curves in the whole database (>5.70 mg/dl), in women (>5.26 mg/dl) and in men (>5.49 mg/dl). Multivariate Cox regression analyses adjusted for confounders (age, arterial hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, smoking habit, ethanol intake, BMI, haematocrit, LDL cholesterol and use of diuretics) identified an independent association between SUA and fatal MI in the whole database (hazard ratio 1.381, 95% confidence intervals, 1.096–1.758, P = 0.006) and in women (hazard ratio 1.514, confidence intervals 1.105–2.075, P < 0.01), but not in men. Conclusion: The results of the current study confirm that SUA is an independent risk factor for fatal MI after adjusting for potential confounding variables, and demonstrate that a prognostic cut-off value associated to fatal MI can be identified at least in women.

Abstract
Since the publication of the Framingham Heart Study, which suggested that uric acid should no longer be associated with coronary heart disease after additional adjustment for cardiovascular disease risk factors, the number of publications challenging this statement has dramatically increased. The aim of this paper was to review and discuss the most recent studies addressing the possible relation between sustained elevated serum uric acid levels and the onset or worsening of cardiovascular and renal diseases. Original studies involving American teenagers clearly showed that serum uric acid levels were directly correlated with systolic and diastolic pressures, which has been confirmed in adult cohorts revealing a 2.21-fold increased risk of hypertension. Several studies involving patients with coronary artery disease support a role for serum uric acid level as a marker and/or predictor for future cardiovascular mortality and long-term adverse events in patients with coronary artery disease. Retrospective analyses have shown an inverse relationship between serum uric acid levels and renal function, and even a mild hyperuricemia has been shown to be associated with chronic kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. Interventional studies, although of small size, showed that uric acid (UA)-lowering therapies induced a reduction of blood pressure in teenagers and a protective effect on renal function. Taken together, these studies support a role for high serum uric acid levels (>6 mg/dL or 60 mg/L) in hypertension-associated morbidities and should bring awareness to physicians with regards to patients with chronic hyperuricemia.

Abstract
AIMS Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is now very prevalent in China. Due to the lower rate of controlled diabetes in China compared to that in developed countries, there is a higher incidence of serious cardiovascular complications, especially acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of this study was to establish a potent risk predictive model in the economically disadvantaged northwest region of China, which could predict the probability of new-onset ACS in patients with T2DM. METHODS Of 456 patients with T2DM admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from January 2018 to January 2019 and included in this study, 270 had no ACS, while 186 had newly diagnosed ACS. Overall, 32 demographic characteristics and serum biomarkers of the study patients were analysed. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was used to select variables, while the multivariate logistic regression was used to establish the predictive model that was presented using a nomogram. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the discriminatory capacity of the model. A calibration plot and Hosmer-Lemeshow test were used for the calibration of the predictive model, while the decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate its clinical validity. RESULTS After random sampling, 319 and 137 T2DM patients were included in the training and validation sets, respectively. The predictive model included age, body mass index, diabetes duration, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum uric acid, lipoprotein(a), hypertension history and alcohol drinking status as predictors. The AUC of the predictive model and that of the internal validation set was 0.830 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.786-0.874] and 0.827 (95% CI 0.756-0.899), respectively. The predictive model showed very good fitting degree, and DCA demonstrated a clinically effective predictive model. CONCLUSIONS A potent risk predictive model was established, which is of great value for the secondary prevention of diabetes. Weight loss, lowering of SBP and blood uric acid levels and appropriate control for DBP may significantly reduce the risk of new-onset ACS in T2DM patients in Northwest China.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the association between health conditions and overweight in climacteric women assisted by primary care professionals. It is a cross-sectional study conducted with 874 women from 40 to 65 years of age, selected by probabilistic sampling between August 2014 and August 2015. In addition to the outcome variable, overweight and obesity, other variables such as sociodemographic, reproductive, clinical, eating and behavioural factors were evaluated. Descriptive analyses of the variables investigated were performed to determine their frequency distributions. Then, bivariate analyses were performed through Poisson regression. For the multivariate analyses, hierarchical Poisson regression was used to identify factors associated with overweight and obesity in the climacteric period. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 74%. Attending public school (PR: 1.30-95% CI 1.14-1.50), less schooling (PR: 1.11-95% CI 1.01-1.23), gout (PR: 1.18-95% CI 1.16-1.44), kidney disease (PR: 1.18-95% CI 1.05-1.32), metabolic syndrome (MS) (PR: 1.19-95% CI 1.05-1.34) and fat intake (PR: 1.12-95% CI 1.02-1.23) were considered risk factors for overweight. Having the first birth after 18 years of age (PR: 0.89-95% CI 0.82 to 0.97) was shown to be a protective factor for overweight and obesity. The presence of overweight and obesity is associated with sociodemographic, reproductive, clinical and eating habits.

The role of serum uric acid in coronary artery disease has been extensively investigated. It was suggested that serum uric acid level (SUA) is an independent predictor of endothelial dysfunction and related to coronary artery lesions. However, the relationship between SUA and severity of coronary atherosclerosis evaluated via endothelial dysfunction using peripheral arterial tone (PAT) and the reactive hyperhemia index (RHI) has not been investigated during a first episode of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of our study was to address this point. We prospectively enrolled 80 patients with a first episode of ACS in a single-center observational study. All patients underwent coronary angiography, evaluation of endothelial function via the RHI, and SUA measurement. The severity of the coronary artery lesion was assessed angiographically, and patients were classified in three groups based on the extent of disease and Gensini and SYNTAX scores. Endothelial function was considered abnormal if RHI < 1.67. We identified a linear correlation between SUA and RHI (R2 = 0.66 P < 0.001). In multivariable analyses, SUA remained associated with RHI, even after adjustment for traditional cardiovascular risk factors and renal function. SUA was associated with severity of coronary artery disease. SUA is associated with severity of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia. This inexpensive, readily measured biological parameter may be useful to monitor ACS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary artery disease (CAD) in adults ≤ 35 years of age is rare, but the incidence is on the rise and the risk factors for this age group are largely uncertain. Previous studies have shown that hyperuricemia (HUA) is an independent risk factor for CAD in the general population, whereas the role in adults ≤ 35 years of age with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is unclear. METHODS Patients, 18-35 years of age, diagnosed with ACS for the first time at the documented institu- tion between January 2005 and December 2015, were enrolled in the current study. The severity of CAD was assessed by the Gensini score. Patients were divided into two groups according to the definition of HUA. The relationship between HUA and CAD severity was assessed based on multi-variate analysis. RESULTS Seven hundred seventy-one participants fulfilling the criteria were included in this study (mean age, 31.6 years; 94.4% male). HUA, which was defined as a serum uric acid level ≥ 7.0 mg/dL (420μmol/L) in males and ≥ 6.0 mg/dL (357 μmol/L) in females, accounted for 37% of the participants. Multivariate analysis identified that HUA is an independent risk factor of CAD severity, as assessed by the Gensini score, in very young adults with ACS (OR 8.28; 95% CI 1.96-14.59; p = 0.01), and the effect of HUA on CAD severity was second only to diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSIONS Hyperuricemia was shown to be an independent risk factor for CAD severity in young adults with ACS (18-35 years of age).

Abstract
Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) level is known to be a prognostic factor in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the correlation between SUA level and coronary plaque instability has not been fully evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between SUA level and plaque instability of nonculprit lesions in patients with ACS using optical coherence tomography. A total of 150 patients with ACS who underwent 3-vessel optical coherence tomography were selected. Patients were classified into 3 groups according to tertiles of SUA level. There was a trend towards a thinner fibrous cap (0.15 ± 0.06 versus 0.07 ± 0.01 versus 0.04 ± 0.01 mm2, p < 0.001) and a wider mean lipid arc (169.41 ± 33.16 versus 177.22 ± 37.76 versus 222.43 ± 47.65°, p < 0.001) with increasing SUA tertile. The plaques of the high and intermediate tertile groups had a smaller minimum lumen area than the low tertile group (6.02 ± 1.11 versus 5.38 ± 1.28 mm2, p < 0.001). In addition, thin-cap fibroatheromas, microvessels, macrophages, and cholesterol crystals were more frequent in the high tertile group than the low and intermediate groups. Multivariate analysis showed SUA level to be a predictor of plaque instability.

Abstract
Background Hyperuricemia is common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, and many previous studies have reported the associations between hyperuricemia and adverse cardiovascular outcomes, which are the major cause of death in such patients. We investigated the relationship between serum uric acid level and the severity of coronary stenosis in ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Methods Among 721 patients who started MHD treatment, 102 underwent coronary angiographic tests complaining of chest discomfort that was new at initiation of MHD. We collected data on uric acid level and coronary artery luminal diameter, defining luminal diameter narrowing of more than 50% in any major coronary artery as critical-stenosis. Results We detected critical coronary artery stenosis in 52 (57.8%) patients. The mean uric acid level was 6.6 ± 2.2 mg/dL, and that was significantly higher in the critical-stenosis group (4.9 ± 1.4 mg/dL vs. 7.8 ± 2.0 mg/dL, P < 0.001). The only independent predictor of critical-stenosis in multivariate analysis was serum uric acid level (P < 0.001). Conclusion High serum uric acid was associated with severe coronary artery stenosis in Korean ESRD patients. Hyperuricemia is a readily modifiable factor, and appropriately preventing it could provide significant benefits in ESRD patients.

Serum uric acid concentration is associated with hypertensive retinopathy in hypertensive chinese adults. BMC Ophthalmol 2017; 17:83. Abstract
BACKGROUND This cross sectional investigation included 12,966 subjects with hypertension, a cohort of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT), a randomized, multicenter clinical trial. This study aimed to explore the correlation between serum uric acid (SUA) concentration and hypertensive retinopathy in hypertensive adults. METHODS Diagnosis of hypertensive retinopathy was determined by non-mydriatic fundus photography and classified with Keith-Wagener-Barker (KWB) system. The correlation of SUA levels with hypertensive retinopathy prevalence and severity was assessed by statistical analysis. RESULTS 9848 (75.95%) subjects were diagnosed with hypertensive retinopathy with the following retinopathy grade distribution: grade 1: 58.80%, grade 2: 14.81%, and grade 3-4: 2.34%. SUA levels were significantly associated with hypertensive retinopathy prevalence. Patients with hypertensive retinopathy had higher SUA levels than those without hypertensive retinopathy. Patients in the highest uric acid quartile had an odds ratio for hypertensive retinopathy of 1.21 compared to patients in the lowest uric acid quartile (OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.05-1.40, P = 0.008). When compared to the non-hyperuricemia group, those in the hyperuricemia group had an odds ratio for hypertensive retinopathy of 1.18(OR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.05-1.33, P = 0.004). Every 1 mg/dl increase in uric acid concentration was significantly associated with a 6% higher odds of hypertensive retinopathy (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02-1.10, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of hypertensive retinopathy was high (75.95%) among hypertensives in our patients cohort. In addition, SUA concentration was significantly associated with hypertensive retinopathy.

Abstract
Premenopausal women are known to have less heart disease than their menopausal counterparts and men. However, there is a rising prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in premenopausal females, which necessitates determination of risk factors that negate the effects of hormonal protection. There are few studies describing the prevalence of traditional and emerging risk factors in premenopausal women with CAD. Thus, our objective was to explore the prevalence of traditional and emerging risk factors and features of coronary lesions in premenopausal women with CAD in an Indian population. Forty premenopausal female patients with angiographically proven CAD and undergoing treatment with conventional therapies and 40 age-matched premenopausal females without any evidence of CAD were enrolled. Premenopausal females with CAD most commonly had the single-vessel CAD and the left anterior descending artery was most commonly involved. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, family history of CAD and 10-year risk score was higher in premenopausal females with CAD than controls. Even after treatment with conventional therapies, premenopausal women with CAD had dyslipidemia and significantly elevated levels of emerging risk factors such as ApoB, ApoB/ApoA1 ratio, hsCRP, lipoprotein (a), uric acid, T4, fibrinogen, and total leukocyte count as compared to controls (p < 0.05). Further, they had significantly lower levels of HDL-C, and Apolipoprotein A1 and T3 which are protective markers for vascular risk. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that low levels of Apo A1 and high levels of fibrinogen, hsCRP and TG drive the vascular risk, and therefore these factors should be considered as candidates for better diagnosis, early detection, and intervention of CAD in premenopausal women.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Several risk factors have been associated with the development of these pathologies. However, there is controversy about whether hyperuricemia is an independent risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. To answer this question, we performed a recent literature review of relevant published material to assess the association of hyperuricemia with four major cardiovascular diseases: hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure and atrial fibrillation.

Abstract
Although the association of hyperuricemia and cardiovascular diseases is well established by previous research studies, the relationship between gout and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) remains unclear. We conducted a nationwide longitudinal cohort study to investigate the relationship between gout and DVT. We used the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to identify patients with gout diagnosed in Taiwan during 2000–2011, and we followed up these patients to determine the incidence of DVT among them. The association between gout and DVT was analyzed by cox proportional hazard model. The study cohort included 35,959 patients with history of gout attack and 35,959 matched controls without gout attack. During the median follow-up of 7.5 ± 3.6 years, the incidence rate of DVT was significantly higher in patients with gout than that in control group (13.48 versus 9.77 per 104 person-years, p < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed a tendency toward DVT development in gout patients (log rank test, p < 0.001). In a Cox model, patients with gout were found to have a 1.38-fold (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.18 to 1.62, p < 0.001) higher risk of developing DVT. Hyperuricemia with gout attack could be a possible risk predictor for DVT, but these findings need to be confirmed in future clinical and experimental studies.

Abstract
The role of hyperhomocysteinemia in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients remains unclear. The present study evaluated the relationship between homocysteine (HCys), adenosine plasma concentration (APC), plasma uric acid, and CAD severity evaluated using the SYNTAX score. We also evaluated in vitro the influence of adenosine on HCys production by hepatoma cultured cells (HuH7). Seventy-eight patients (mean age ± SD: 66.3 ± 11.3; mean SYNTAX score: 19.9 ± 12.3) and 30 healthy subjects (mean age: 61 ± 13) were included. We incubated HuH7 cells with increasing concentrations of adenosine and addressed the effect on HCys level in cell culture supernatant. Patients vs. controls had higher APC (0.82 ± 0.5 μmol/L vs 0.53 ± 0.14 μmol/L; p < 0.01), HCys (15 ± 7.6 μmol/L vs 6.8 ± 3 μmol/L, p < 0.0001), and uric acid (242.6 ± 97 vs 202 ± 59, p < 0.05) levels. APC was correlated with HCys and uric acid concentrations in patients (Pearson's R = 0.65 and 0.52; p < 0.0001, respectively). The SYNTAX score was correlated with HCys concentration. Adenosine induced a time- and dose-dependent increase in HCys in cell culture. Our data suggest that high APC is associated with HCys and uric acid concentrations in CAD patients. Whether the increased APC participates in atherosclerosis or, conversely, is part of a protective regulation process needs further investigations.

Abstract
Uric acid is the final product of purine metabolism. Classically it is recognized as the cause of gouty arthritis and kidney stones. Western civilization has increased serum levels of uric acid which is no longer considered a benign plasma solute. It has been postulated and recently demonstrated that it can penetrate cell membrane and exerts damaging intracellular actions such as oxidation and inflammation. These observations have stimulated several epidemiological researches suggesting that hyperuricemia is linked or even provokes hypertension and coronary artery disease. In this review we summarize the current evidences regarding uric acid which contribute in the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease.

A coronary artery disease-associated SNP rs6903956 contributed to asymptomatic hyperuricemia susceptibility in Han Chinese. Lipids Health Dis 2015; 14:33. Abstract
Background To investigate the association of a coronary artery disease (CAD) risk SNP rs6903956 with asymptomatic hyperuricemia (aHU) susceptibility in Han Chinese. Methods Two hundred and twenty one patients with aHU and 447 healthy controls were recruited for this study. SNP rs6903956 were genotyped using TaqMan probe. Results The overall genotype and allele frequency distribution of the rs6903956 showed significant difference between aHU cases and controls (p <0.001 for genotype and allele, respectively). AA genotype of rs6903956 was significantly associated with aHU (OR = 8.672, 95% CI 2.811-26.753, p <0.001) in our Han Chinese aHU cohort. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that rs6903956 might be an independent risk factor for aHU susceptibility (OR = 10.642 [2.671- 42.400], p = 0.001 for codominant model and OR = 9.205 [2.336-36.280], p = 0.002 for recessive model) after adjustment for some well- known CAD risk factors including age, gender, body mass index, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, abnormal glycometabolism, lipid abnormality and alcohol intake. No significant genotype-specific difference in uric acid levels was observed in aHU patients and controls. Conclusions Our findings are the first to establish a genetic link of a CAD-associated rs6903956 with aHU in a Han Chinese population, providing the genetic evidence to support the close relationship between hyperuricemia and CAD.
