Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) levels among adolescents are low globally and in Vietnam. This study aims to assess the prevalence of PA and identify demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors related to PA among secondary school students in Ho Chi Minh City. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2023, involving 475 6th-grade students. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires and anthropometric measurements. Psychosocial factors, including self-efficacy, enjoyment, family influence, and belief in PA were measured using validated scales, while teacher influence on PA was evaluated using a custom-designed questionnaire. Sedentary behavior was assessed using the Adolescent Sedentary Activity Questionnaire (ASAQ), and PA levels were determined using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C). Gender differences were analyzed using chi-square tests and t-tests. Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression were applied to examine associations and factors influencing PA. RESULTS Only 36.8% of students met the recommended PA levels, with boys (40.7%) being more active than girls (32.9%). Boys had higher body mass index (BMI) and more screen time, while girls spent more time on cultural and social activities. Positive correlations were found between PA levels and psychosocial factors, especially in self-efficacy (r = 0.761, p < 0.001) and family influence (r = 0.717, p < 0.001). Sedentary behaviors, such as small screen recreation (r = -0.449, p < 0.001) and after-school education (r = -0.380, p < 0.001), negatively correlated with PA levels. Hierarchical analyses showed that BMI, self-efficacy, beliefs, family and teacher influence, and time spent on small screen recreation and after-school education significantly explained PA among adolescents. CONCLUSION Vietnamese adolescents have low PA levels, with gender differences. Interventions should enhance support, reduce sedentary behavior, and address gender-specific barriers.

Additionally, it highlights obesity's physical implications, impacting overall health, chronic conditions, and healthcare systems. Using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) dataset among 39,168 children aged 30 to 59 months in Pakistan, it examines socioeconomic factors like access to healthy food and parental education. Through logistic regression on diverse demographic samples, this research unveils significant associations between physical development, socio-emotional well-being, demographics, socioeconomic status, and overweight/obesity prevalence. Understanding these connections is crucial for tailored interventions to address escalating obesity rates, requiring nuanced strategies in diverse demographics and socioeconomic contexts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Arg64 allele of the rs4994 (Trp64Arg) variant in the β3-adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) gene is involved in the control of energy balance by altering lipolysis and thermogenesis in adipocytes, ultimately contributing to the development of obesity. The objective of our study was to investigate the association between the rs4994 variant of the ADRB3 gene and obesity in Hanoi preschool-age children, adjusting for their eating behaviors. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed involving 708 children with normal weight and 304 children with obesity aged 3-5 years from 36 kindergartens in Hanoi, Vietnam. Cheek mucosa cell samples were used for DNA extraction, and genotyping at the ADRB3-rs4994 locus was performed using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method (PCR-RFLP). Eating behaviors were assessed using the Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ). Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to examine the association between the rs4994 variant and obesity, adjusting for confounding factors such as age, sex, residence, birth weight, and eating behaviors. RESULTS The frequency of the C allele in the group with obesity was 16.4%, which was higher than in the control group (11.7%, P = 0.003). Children with the CC genotype exhibited significantly greater weight and weight-for-age Z-score compared to those with the TT and TC genotypes (P = 0.004 and 0.03, respectively). Following univariate and multivariate analyses adjusted for age, sex, residence, birth weight, and eating behaviors, a significant association between the rs4994 variant and obesity was observed (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that the ADRB3-rs4994 variant can be considered as an independent risk factor for obesity in Vietnamese preschool children.

Abstract
The prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents has been increasing worldwide and is a significant public health challenge. Obesity is linked to several non-communicable diseases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity based on three growth references and described physical activities and dietary patterns among sixth graders in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). From 2018 to 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 1375 students from 16 junior high schools in HCMC. We applied Probability Proportional to Size sampling to select schools. Anthropometric measurements, pubertal status assessment, and diet and physical activity data were collected through Food Frequency and Physical Activity Questionnaires. The study revealed a high prevalence of overweight and obesity among grade 6 students, with ∼45%-56% of students classified as overweight or obese using various growth references. Moreover, most students did not meet the World Health Organization's physical activity and sedentary behavior recommendations. Most students spent <60 min/day on moderate to vigorous physical activity, and over 70% spent at least 120 min/day on sedentary activities during weekdays and weekends. The diet of the students was also imbalanced, with high intakes of protein, lipids, and carbohydrates and low consumption of fruits and vegetables. Nutritionists and policymakers should inform and encourage opportunities for healthier food and more daily activity for children, starting before the sixth-grade, so they can learn how to make healthier choices and change their behavior before they reach adolescence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE By meticulously tracking the evolving growth, development, and nutritional status of primary and secondary school students in Qiongzhong County from 2014 to 2021 post-implementation of the "Nutrition Improvement Program for Rural Compulsory Education Students"(NIPRCES, This project provides a supplementary food allowance of at least ¥4 per person per day for primary and secondary school students. The project area undergoes annual routine monitoring.), this study aims to offer a scientific basis for enhancing and promoting the project. Through thorough monitoring of students' nutritional status changes influenced by this program, we strive to establish a comprehensive and evidence-based framework for its future advancement. METHODS From 2014 to 2021, this study employed a multi-stage sampling method utilizing cluster sampling to select six primary and six secondary schools in Qiongzhong County, Hainan Province. Data on the growth and development of respondents were collected. This cohort was a dynamic cohort with a total of 18,762 final data recovered. The prevalence of malnutrition was evaluated using the Cochran Armitage Trend Test (CATT) to assess year-to-year changes. Furthermore, height/weight and the prevalence of malnutrition between groups were compared using the t-test, χ2 test, and Bonferroni's corrected analysis. RESULTS The average height of both boys and girls has increased. In 2021, boys and girls of all ages showed an average height increase of 2.31 cm and 1.98 cm, respectively, compared to 2014. Nevertheless, the growth and development levels, and rate of improvement of these students remain comparatively lower than their rural counterparts across China, who are of the same age. From 2014 to 2021, the prevalence of undernutrition (mainly wasting) showed a significant downward trend (P < 0.05) from 29.30% to 22.19%, and the prevalence of overnutrition showed an upward trend (both P < 0.05). The prevalence of undernutrition was higher among boys, students in grades 1-3 and those of Li nationality. Meanwhile, the prevalence of overnutrition was higher among boys, students in grades 1-3 and those of Han nationality. CONCLUSIONS Over the 8-year period of NIPRCES, there has been progress in the growth and development of students, yet levels still lag behind the national average for rural students of the same age. While malnutrition prevalence have decreased, they remain high, with a concerning rise in overnutrition prevalence. Undernutrition and overweight/obesity are more prevalent among boys and younger students. Li students show higher prevalence of undernutrition, while overnutrition is a growing issue among Han students. Simultaneously, local education and health care departments must acknowledge the disparities in growth and nutritional status among primary and secondary school students residing in rural areas within the tropics and those in rural areas across the entire nation. Nutritional improvement measures should be tailored to local conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood malnutrition in all forms is a major public health issue worldwide. This review systematically examined the prevalence and determinants and identify the potential interventions and current gap in addressing malnutrition including undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) in Vietnamese children aged 0-18 years old. METHODS Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science were systematically searched through June 2022 to identify relevant articles published within the past 25 years. Study selection and data extraction were performed by one reviewer and checked for accuracy by the other two reviewers in accordance with PRISMA guideline. Risk of publication bias was assessed using American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist. RESULTS Seventy-two studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. Undernutrition has decreased over time but still 22.4%, 5.2% and 12.2% of children under 5 were stunted, wasted and underweight, respectively. Anaemia, iron, zinc, and vitamin D deficiencies were the more common forms of MNDs, the prevalence varied by age, region, and socioeconomic group. Population-based surveys reported that 11% and 48% of children aged 0-11 years old were iron and vitamin D deficient, respectively. Zinc deficiency affected almost one-quarter of the children and adolescents. Retinol deficiency was of less concern (< 20%). However, more evidence on MNDs prevalence is needed. Overweight and obesity is now on the rise, affecting one-third of school-aged children. The key determinants of undernutrition included living in rural areas, children with low birth weight, and poor socio-economic status, whereas living in urban and affluent areas, having an inactive lifestyle and being a boy were associated with increased risk of overweight and obesity. Nutrition specific intervention studies including supplementation and food fortification consistently showed improvements in anthropometric indices and micronutrient biomarkers. National nutrition-sensitive programmes also provided nutritional benefits for children's growth and eating behaviours, but there is a lack of data on childhood obesity. CONCLUSION This finding highlights the need for effective double duty actions to simultaneously address different forms of childhood malnutrition in Vietnam. However, evidence on the potential intervention strategies, especially on MNDs and overnutrition are still limited to inform policy decision, thus future research is warranted.

Abstract
Dengue-associated complications, including dengue shock syndrome, severe respiratory distress, and pediatric acute liver failure (PALF), are associated with high mortality rates in patients with dengue. There is increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity among children worldwide. Obesity may activate inflammatory mediators, leading to increased capillary permeability and plasma leakage in patients with dengue. Several studies have shown a correlation between obesity and DSS, but did not include dengue fatality or PALF. Therefore, we hypothesized possible associations between obesity and critical dengue-associated clinical outcomes among PICU-admitted children with DSS, including dengue-related mortality, mechanical ventilation (MV) requirements, and dengue-associated PALF. The nutritional status of the participants was assessed using World Health Organization growth charts. A total of 858 participants with complete nutritional data were enrolled in this study. Obesity was significantly associated with risk of severe respiratory failure and MV support (odds ratio = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.31-4.06, P < .01); however, it was not associated with dengue-associated mortality or acute liver failure. Obese pediatric patients with DSS should be closely monitored for severe respiratory distress and the need for high-flow oxygenation support, particularly MV, soon after hospitalization.

Abstract
Introduction This study aims to use the health belief model to identify predictors of weight management behaviour among civil servants in Ethiopia. Predictors include perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, cues to action, and self-efficacy. The study will provide insight into potential factors that civil servants perceive as significant in weight management. Methods A sequential explanatory study was conducted from November 15, 2022, to January 20, 2020 among civil servants working in Dessie town, with 423 participants selected through simple random and purposive sampling techniques for the quantitative and qualitative studies, respectively. Self-administered questionnaires were used for the quantitative study, while in-depth interviews were conducted for the qualitative study. Data was verified, entered into Epi Data, and analysed using Stata for multivariable linear regression. ATLAS.ti software version 7 facilitated the qualitative data analysis process. Findings with a p-value <0.05 at a 95% confidence interval were considered statistically significant in the final model. Results This study found that several factors were significantly associated with higher behavioural intention for weight management. Females had higher intention than males, and individuals with higher educational levels demonstrated higher intention. Marital status was also a factor, with being divorced associated with lower intention. The absence of an obese family member and lack of prior weight loss experience were also linked to lower intention. Perceived susceptibility and perceived benefits positively influenced intention, while higher perceived barriers were linked to lower intention. Conclusion The study found that a stronger inclination towards weight management was linked to being female, having higher education, no obese family member, prior weight loss experience and positive attitudes. Interventions should target those less likely to exhibit these characteristics and address negative attitudes towards weight management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity causes a serious diet-related chronic disease, including type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and certain forms of cancer. In Sub- Saharan Africa including Ethiopia, most nutritional interventions mainly focused on a child undernutrition and ignored the impacts of obesity among children. In Ethiopia, the magnitude and associated factors of obesity among school-age children were not clearly described. Therefore this study assesses the predictors of obesity among school- age children in Debre Berhan City, Ethiopia, 2022. METHODS A cross-sectional study design was conducted from June to July, 2022. Participants were selected by using multistage sampling method. Data were collected using pre-tested and structured questions. Data were coded and entered in Epi-data version 4.6 and exported and analyzed using SPSS version 25. RESULT A total of 600 children were participating in the study. The prevalence of obesity was 10.7% (95% CI: 8.3, 13.2). In this study, attending at private school (AOR = 4.24, 95% CI: 1.58, 11.32), children aged between 10-12years (AOR = 2.67, 95% CI: 1.30, 5.48), soft drink available in home (AOR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.25,18.13), Loneliness (AOR = 1.67 95% CI: 1.12, 3.15) and mothers with occupational status of daily labour (AOR = 8.54 95% CI: 1.12, 65.39) were significantly associated with childhood obesity. CONCLUSION In this study, the overall magnitude of childhood obesity was (10.7%) which means one in eleven children and relatively high as compare to the EDHS survey. Therefore, more attention should be given to strengthening physical activities, providing nutritional education, and creating community awareness about healthy diets as well as other preventive measures.

Abstract
Food choices that shape human diets and health are influenced by various socio-economic factors. Vietnam struggles to meet many nutrition targets where links between food choice and diet have not been widely explored. This study assesses the food choice motives, based on a 28-item food choice questionnaire (FCQ), and the diet quality of 603 adults in three sites (urban, peri-urban, and rural) in northern Vietnam. We assess diet quality using the Diet Quality Index-Vietnam (DQI-V) which consists of variety, adequacy, moderation, and balance components. Using factor analysis, we grouped FCQ items into five factors: health focus, sensory appeal, mood ethics, convenience, and familiarity. The structural equation modeling indicates that food choice motives significantly impact the DQI-V and its components but in different directions. The results show that sensory appeal has a positive association with the overall DQI-V score, while having a negative impact on the variety component. Findings present a potential trade-off issue for interventions and policies related to food products. Nutrition knowledge is positively associated with all elements of diet quality across all three study sites. Vietnamese agrobiodiversity could be better utilized to increase dietary diversity. Differentiated policies are necessary to address the poor dietary diversity and adequacy in northern Vietnam.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obesity is on the rise worldwide and has emerged as a global health concern. It has presented itself as the leading cause of morbidity, disability, and healthcare utilization. Bariatric surgery is a viable treatment option that offers sustained weight loss and improvement in comorbidities. The aim of this study is to determine the perception of doctors regarding bariatric surgery and the major barriers to the referral of morbidly obese for surgery. METHOD This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted from November 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022. It involved prospective data collection through online questionnaires filled by doctors practicing in Peshawar. The sampling technique was non-probability convenience-based sampling. The sample size was 152. Doctors from all age groups and both genders were included in our study. Non-consenting doctors and those who were practicing bariatric surgery were excluded. Data were analyzed using a statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 (IBM Inc., Armonk, NY). Categorical variables have been presented as frequencies and percentages. Numerical variables have been presented as mean ± SD. RESULTS A total of 152 doctors participated in our research study; 92 were physicians and 60 were surgeons. The majority of our study participants' patient load per week was >75. Around 47% believed bariatric surgery was a valuable tool in the treatment of morbid obesity. The most commonly reported barrier to referral was surgical complications or side effects (28.9%). CONCLUSION The study concluded that the awareness regarding bariatric and metabolic surgery remains flimsy among the doctor community. Most of the physicians were unaware of the benefits of the surgical management of obesity. They also had doubts regarding the safety of the procedure. We need proper utilization of awareness strategies to overcome these barriers.

Abstract
AIM To assess the impact of the obesity epidemic on type 2 diabetes (T2D), prediabetes and glycometabolic indices in children and adolescents. METHODS We searched four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Web of Science). Cross-sectional or cohort studies that reported on obesity and the prevalence of T2D or prediabetes in children and adolescents were reviewed. The study design, sample size and clinical outcomes were extracted from each study. The prevalence of T2D and prediabetes from the studies were pooled using meta-analysis methods. RESULTS Meta-analysis of 228184 participants showed that the prevalence of T2D was 1.3% (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.6-2.1%) in obese subjects, which was 13 times that in normal weight subjects (0.1%, 95% CI, 0.01-0.2%). The prevalence of prediabetes in obese subjects was 3 times that in normal subjects at 17.0% (13.0-22.0%) vs. 6.0% (0.01-11.0%). Moreover, BMI was positively correlated with the prevalence of T2D, prediabetes and glycometabolic indices in obese children and adolescents. CONCLUSION The pooled results confirm that obesity in children and adolescents leads to statistically significant increases in the prevalence of T2D and prediabetes and in glycometabolic indicator levels.

Abstract
Improving diet quality of preschool children is challenging in countries undergoing food environment and nutrition transition. However, few studies have sought to understand how mothers in these countries decide what and how to feed their children. This study aims to explore maternal experiences, perspectives and beliefs when making food choice decisions for preschool children in urban, peri-urban and rural areas in northern Vietnam. Two focus group discussions and 24 in-depth interviews were carried out and analysed using thematic analysis. The results showed that mothers across the urban-rural spectrum shared the intention to feed children safe, nutritious food for better health and weight gain while satisfying child food preferences to improve appetite and eating enjoyment. These food choice intentions were embedded within family food traditions, whereby mothers emphasised nutritious food and adopted strict feeding styles during lunch and dinner but were flexible and accommodating of child preferences during breakfast and side meals. These intentions were also embedded within the physical food environment, which provided a mix of healthy and unhealthy food through informal food retailers. Despite these intentions, mothers faced financial constraints and difficulties in managing children's refusal to chew, changes in eating mood and strong eating temperament. These findings support policies to limit the presence of unhealthy food in informal food retail and encourage meal-specific feeding strategies to help children enjoy nutritious food, transition from soft to textured food and become more cooperative during mealtime.

Abstract
This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of peer-led education intervention on physical activity, sedentary behaviours, and dietary behaviours among adolescents in HCM city, Vietnam. Among students in the intervention arm after a 9-month follow-up, total energy intake was reduced by 304 kcal/day, fat by 13 g/day, carbohydrate by 39 g/day, and sweet foods by 20 g/day, compared to pre-intervention figures (p < 0.05, adjusted for age, BMI at baseline, gender, the interaction between measurement time and intervention groups, and cluster effect in schools). Only total energy intake was significantly lower in the intervention than control students (p < 0.05, after adjustment). Our pilot project has established the feasibility of a peer-led intervention to improve lifestyles among adolescents in HCM city and evidence of improvements in dietary intake. Abstract
The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased dramatically all over the world in recent years. While obesity in adults can be easily measured using the BMI calculation, determining overweight and obesity in children is more controversial. The aim was to compare the three most used international classification systems (WHO 2007, CDC 2000 and Cole-IOTF) to determine overweight and obesity in infant and adolescent populations. We performed a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines of articles comparing any of the three classification systems. The main findings were that the WHO 2007 criteria show the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity in the child and youth population. The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity was determined to be higher in boys than in girls in most studies, when analysing the classifications of the WHO 2007, CDC 2000 and Cole-IOTF together. However, there was a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity in girls than in boys when only the CDC 2000 and Cole-IOTF criteria were considered. Both the results of the review and the great heterogeneity found in the meta-analysis show that it is necessary to unify the criteria for the classification of childhood overweight and obesity. International standards are insufficient for working with the current population. A working group should be created to address this issue and agree on the unification of a gold standard, taking into account the geographical region, the ethnic groups and the age groups of the child and youth population and above all, the secular growth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growth faltering is associated with adverse consequences during childhood and later life. However, questions remain on the relative importance of preconception maternal nutritional status (PMNS) and child growth during the first 1000 d of life. OBJECTIVES We examined associations between PMNS, gestational weight gain (GWG), and child growth during the first 1000 d with attained body size at age 6-7 y. METHODS We used data from a follow-up of a double-blinded randomized controlled trial of preconception micronutrient supplementation in Vietnam (n = 5011 women). The outcomes included offspring height-for-age z score (HAZ), BMI-for-age z score (BMIZ), and prevalence of stunting and overweight/obese at age 6-7 y (n = 1579). We used multivariable linear and Poisson regression models to evaluate the relative contributions of PMNS (height and BMI), GWG, and conditional growth in 4 periods: fetal, 0-6 mo, 6-12 mo, and 12-24 mo. RESULTS PMNS was positively associated with child-attained size at 6-7 y. For each 1-SD higher maternal height and BMI, offspring had 0.28-SD and 0.13-SD higher HAZ at 6-7 y, respectively. Higher maternal BMI and GWG were associated with larger child BMIZ (β: 0.29 and 0.10, respectively). Faster linear growth, especially from 6 to 24 mo, had the strongest association with child HAZ at 6-7 y (β: 0.39-0.42), whereas conditional weight measures in all periods were similarly associated with HAZ (β: 0.10-0.15). For BMIZ at 6-7 y, the magnitude of association was larger and increased with child age for conditional weight gain (β: 0.21-0.41) but smaller for conditional length gain. Faster growth in the first 2 y was associated with reduced risk of stunting and thinness but increased risk of overweight/obese at 6-7 y. CONCLUSIONS Interventions aimed at improving child growth while minimizing the risk of overweight during the school age years should target both women of reproductive age prior to conception through delivery and their offspring during the first 1000 d. Abstract
Obesity is a complex multifactorial disease that accumulated excess body fat leads to negative effects on health. Obesity continues to accelerate resulting in an unprecedented epidemic that shows no significant signs of slowing down any time soon. Raised body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and musculoskeletal disorders, resulting in dramatic decrease of life quality and expectancy. The main cause of obesity is long-term energy imbalance between consumed calories and expended calories. Here, we explore the biological mechanisms of obesity with the aim of providing actionable treatment strategies to achieve a healthy body weight from nature to nurture. This review summarizes the global trends in obesity with a special focus on the pathogenesis of obesity from genetic factors to epigenetic factors, from social environmental factors to microenvironment factors. Against this background, we discuss several possible intervention strategies to minimize BMI.
