Abstract
Background/Objectives: This study investigated intraocular pressure (IOP) changes after a blood draw in older adults considering sex, age, and baseline IOP. Methods: Fifty-three subjects (54.7% females; age: 68.50 ± 4.46 years; Visual Function Index [VF14]: 94.50 ± 7.50 points; mean contrast sensitivity function (CSF) for both eyes in each spatial frequency [cdp]: 1.5 cdp [1.41 ± 0.20 log], 3 cdp [1.57 ± 0.29 log], 6 cdp [1.45 ± 0.39 log], 12 cdp [1.04 ± 0.40 log], 18 cdp [0.63 ± 0.31 log]) voluntarily participated. Subjects fasted for at least 8 h before attending the laboratory. First, IOP was measured in a seated position using a portable rebound tonometer. Ten minutes after the initial measurement, two 10 mL tubes of blood were drawn. Five minutes after the blood draw IOP was measured again following the same procedure as the initial measurement. We evaluated the differences using an analysis of variance. Results: Significant, but not clinically relevant, decreases were found in the right eye, with small effect sizes (p = 0.013-0.079, d = 0.35). Only males and subjects older than 68 years showed trends toward IOP reduction in the right eye. Subjects with baseline IOP ≥ 14 mmHg experienced significant IOP reductions in both eyes, with moderate effect sizes (p = 0.001-0.002, d = 0.56-0.69). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a blood draw of 20 mL is safe for the IOP levels of older adults with baseline IOP between 11 and 21 mmHg. Variations in IOP were observed based on baseline IOP, sex, and age, suggesting the importance of personalized clinical assessments. The primary factor influencing IOP changes appears to be the baseline IOP level.

Abstract
Psychological stress is a ubiquitous facet of modern life, impacting individuals across diverse contexts and demographics. Understanding its physiological manifestations through biomarkers has gained substantial attention within the scientific community. A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple databases for peer-reviewed articles published within the past decade. Preliminary findings reveal many biomarkers associated with psychological stress across different biological systems, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, immune system, cardiovascular system, and central nervous system. This systematic review explores psychological, physiological, and biochemical biomarkers associated with stress. Analyzing recent literature, it synthesizes findings across these three categories, elucidating their respective roles in stress response mechanisms. Psychological markers involve subjective assessments like self-reported stress levels, perceived stress scales, or psychometric evaluations measuring anxiety, depression, or coping mechanisms. Physiological markers include heart rate variability, blood pressure, and immune system responses such as cytokine levels or inflammatory markers. Biochemical markers involve hormones or chemicals linked to stress. It includes cortisol, catecholamines, copeptin, salivary amylase, IL-6, and C-reactive protein.

Abstract
Many concepts describe how individuals sustain effort despite challenging circumstances. For example, scholars and practitioners may incorporate discussions of grit, hardiness, self-control, and resilience into their ideas of performance under adversity. Although there are nuanced points underlying each construct capable of generating empirically sound propositions, the shared attributes make them difficult to differentiate. As a result, substantial confusion arises when debating how these related factors concomitantly contribute to success, especially when practitioners attempt to communicate these ideas in applied settings. The model proposed here-psychological endurance-is a unified theory to explore how multiple concepts contribute to sustained goal-directed behaviors and individual success. Central to this model is the metaphor of a psychological battery, which potentiates and sustains optimal performance despite adversity. Grit and hardiness are associated with the maximum charge of the psychological battery, or how long an individual could sustain effort. Self-control modulates energy management that augments effort required to sustain endurance, whereas resilience represents the ability to recharge. These factors are constrained by both psychological and physiological stressors in the environment that drain the psychology battery. Taken together, these ideas form a novel framework to discuss related psychological concepts, and ideally, optimize intervention to enhance psychological endurance.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether male stress is related to seminal stress biomarkers and pregnancy achievement in women exposed to their partner's seminal plasma (SP) in the intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycle. In this pilot prospective study, 20 couples undergoing ICSI, as well as 5 fertile sperm donors and 10 saliva donors, were investigated. Women were exposed to their partner's SP via unprotected sexual intercourse during the ICSI cycle and intravaginal application on the day of ovum pick-up (Day-OPU). Semen samples were collected from male partners by masturbation on the Day-OPU. Saliva and serum samples were collected prior to masturbation. Body fluids were frozen at - 80 °C until assayed. Biomarkers of activity of the sympathetic adrenomedullary axis (salivary alpha-amylase and adrenaline), sympathetic neural axis (noradrenaline and dopamine), hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system (cortisol), and immune system (C-reactive protein and interleukin (IL)-18) were estimated to examine their association with SP composition and clinical pregnancy achievement. The clinical pregnancy rate was 45.0%. In the unsuccessful ICSI group, blunted levels of salivary and serum cortisol were found compared to the successful ICSI group and the fertile sperm donors. With regard to seminal markers, decreased cortisol level and elevated noradrenaline, noradrenaline/cortisol ratio, and lL-18 levels were strongly associated with ICSI failure (areas under the ROC curves were, 0.813, 0.848, 0.899, and 0.828, respectively). These findings confirm that stress response systems activity affects SP composition, which in turn is associated with ICSI outcomes in women exposed to their partner's SP during an ICSI cycle.

Abstract
Background: Auriculotherapy, a form of therapy that involves stimulating specific points on the ear auricle, has garnered attention for its potential in holistic stress management in adults, aligning with broader patient-centered therapeutic approaches. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of auriculotherapy for stress relief in adults. Methods: A comprehensive search of nine databases (PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, Ovid Medline, Cochrane Library, RISS, KMbase, and KISS) was performed, yielding 553 studies. Of these, 12 were selected for meta-analysis based on the inclusion criteria, which considered demographic data, types of auriculotherapy, intervention characteristics, auricular points, and stress-related outcomes. The risk of bias was also evaluated for each selected study. Results: The meta-analysis results (n = 12) indicated that auriculotherapy was significantly superior to the control group in terms of subjective stress index, blood pressure, heart rate variability, and pulse rate, as well as improving low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) heart rate components and their ratio (LF/HF) in adults. Additionally, the subgroup analysis indicated a trend where the effect size of acupressure may be larger than that of acupuncture. Conclusions: Our findings underscore auriculotherapy's efficacy in reducing stress in adults, advocating for its integration into nursing curriculums as a viable clinical intervention for stress management. Promoting its application in clinical environments could complement holistic, patient-centric care paradigms.

Abstract
Objective To explore whether menstrual blood collected via a modified menstrual pad is a surrogate for venous blood drawn in analyzing hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and fertility-associated hormones. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Clinical testing laboratory. Patients This study included 152 female participants who have regular menses, aged 19-50 years old. Interventions Participants collected menstrual effluent using a menstrual pad modified with a removable dried blood spot (DBS) strip. Peripheral blood samples were collected via venipuncture within 60 hours of menstrual pad use. Main Outcome Measures Menstrual pad and venous blood drawn samples were analyzed for levels of HbA1c, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), anti-müllerian hormone (AMH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). Correlation between menstrual pad and venipuncture samples was performed using Deming linear regression, and r coefficients were measured using Pearson correlation. Results The interassay variability of menstrual pad DBS sample measurements was <6%. Menstrual HbA1c values were stabilized in the DBS strips through 53 days, and menstrual hormone levels remained stable through 15 days. Menstrual HbA1c levels were highly correlated with venipuncture samples (r = 0.96). The levels of TSH (r = 0.94), AMH (r = 0.94), FSH (r = 0.91), and LH (r = 0.91) also showed a high correlation between menstrual strip and venipuncture samples. Conclusions The levels of HbA1c, TSH, AMH, FSH, and LH measurements in menstrual effluent showed a high correlation to venous blood samples, supporting the use of menstrual effluent as a surrogate sample for hormone testing.

Abstract
Nociception related salivary biomolecules can be useful patients who are not able to self-report pain. We present the existing evidence on this topic using the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and a more focused analysis of cortisol change after cold pain induction using the direction of effect analysis combined with risk of bias analysis using ROBINS-I. Five data bases were searched systematically for articles on adults with acute pain secondary to disease, injury, or experimentally induced pain. Forty three articles met the inclusion criteria for the general review and 11 of these were included in the cortisol-cold pain analysis. Salivary melatonin, kallikreins, pro-inflammatory cytokines, soluable TNF-α receptor II, secretory IgA, testosterone, salivary α-amylase (sAA) and, most commonly, cortisol have been studied in relation to acute pain. There is greatest information about cortisol and sAA which both rise after cold pain when compared with other modalities. Where participants have been subjected to both pain and stress, stress is consistently a more reliable predictor of salivary biomarker change than pain. There remain considerable challenges in identifying biomarkers that can be used in clinical practice to guide the measurement of nociception and treatment of pain. Standardization of methodology and researchers' greater awareness of the factors that affect salivary biomolecule concentrations are needed to improve our understanding of this field towards creating a clinically relevant body of evidence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, the fever clinic is an important link for screening and diagnosing whether a patient is infected with the novel coronavirus. Blood collection from children’s fingertips is a commonly used detection method; however, in children, the blood collection process may cause discomfort and resistance. To address this problem, the use of heating gloves combined with hand swinging can be considered for fingertip blood collection in children.
AIM To explore the application of fever gloves with the handshaking method for fingertip blood collection from children in fever clinics during the COVID-19 epidemic.
METHODS A total of 100 children were selected for fingertip blood collection at the fever clinic of our hospital from June 2022 to June 2023 and were divided into two groups using a randomized numerical table method, with 50 cases in each group, including the control and observation groups. The patients in the control group followed the doctor's instructions to cooperate with the routine fingertip blood collection method, and the patients in the observation group followed the doctor's instructions to cooperate with the static fever gloves with the shaking hands method of children's fingertip blood collection. The level of the six blood routine and collection indexes, and the satisfaction of the examination of the patients in the peripheral blood group and the fever gloves with the shaking hands method of the children's fingertip blood collection group were compared.
RESULTS The red and white blood cell count, hemoglobin, and red blood cell pressure volume in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05); the platelet count in the control group was lower than that in the observation group (P < 0.05); the number of times of squeezing the fingertip, the average time of blood collection, and the score of puncture pain in the observation group were significantly better than those in the control group (P < 0.05); and satisfaction with the routine blood examination in the observation group was greater than that in the control group.
CONCLUSION The application value of the fever gloves with shaking hands method for children's fingertip blood collection was better, the accuracy of examination indexes was higher, and patient satisfaction with the examination was greater.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral contraceptives (OCs) are primarily known for their effects on the reproductive system, but they can also impact the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The present study aimed to compare plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) responses to the anticipatory stress of participating in a scientific experiment and venepuncture in OC users versus naturally cycling (NC) women, with a focus on variations throughout the menstrual cycle. METHODS We recruited 131 young women (average age 20.5) and obtained blood samples to measure plasma ACTH concentrations immediately after venepuncture and again after 15 min of group activities designed to facilitate interpersonal attachment and stress-buffering. RESULTS ACTH levels decreased in 70% of all participants throughout the group activities. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA highlighted a significant interaction between time and OC use, indicating differential changes in ACTH levels during social interaction between OC users and NC women. Further, the post-hoc analysis revealed that a period of stress-buffering group activities significantly decreased ACTH levels in NC women during menstrual and secretory phases, but not during the proliferative phase. In contrast, OC users did not display a decrease during group activities, regardless of the phase. CONCLUSION This study underscores the influence of OC use on stress regulation, demonstrating that OCs not only modulate reproductive functions but also impact ACTH stress reactivity. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of considering hormonal contraceptive use and menstrual cycle phases when assessing female stress responses.

Abstract
Around one-third of adults are scared of needles, which can result in adverse emotional and physical responses such as dizziness and fainting (e.g. vasovagal reactions; VVR) and consequently, avoidance of healthcare, treatments, and immunizations. Unfortunately, most people are not aware of vasovagal reactions until they escalate, at which time it is too late to intervene. This study aims to investigate whether facial temperature profiles measured in the waiting room, prior to a blood donation, can be used to classify who will and will not experience VVR during the donation. Average temperature profiles from six facial regions were extracted from pre-donation recordings of 193 blood donors, and machine learning was used to classify whether a donor would experience low or high levels of VVR during the donation. An XGBoost classifier was able to classify vasovagal groups from an adverse reaction during a blood donation based on this early facial temperature data, with a sensitivity of 0.87, specificity of 0.84, F1 score of 0.86, and PR-AUC of 0.93. Temperature fluctuations in the area under the nose, chin and forehead have the highest predictive value. This study is the first to demonstrate that it is possible to classify vasovagal responses during a blood donation using temperature profiles.

Abstract
All humans deal with acute psychological stress periodically. Some individuals are affected by needle phobia in which a heightened sense of arousal is precipitated by venepuncture. Acute psychological stress invokes a range of physiological changes including activation of the sympathetic-adrenal-medullary and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes. In this review article, we first examine the human response to acute stress. We then provide an overview of how psychological stress in a subject is likely to be a source of pre-analytical variability for certain measurands, and the major biochemical markers that have been studied in research aiming to quantify stress. As such, we highlight how stress can be a hindrance to the accurate interpretation of certain laboratory results (particularly cortisol, prolactin, metanephrines and growth hormone), and point out the role that biochemical analysis might play in future studies looking at the effects of stress on human behaviour.

Abstract
Locus of control (LOC) describes whether an individual thinks that they themselves (internal LOC) or external factors (external LOC) have more influence on their lives. LOC varies by domain, and a person's LOC for their intellectual capacities (LOC-Cognition) may be a marker of resilience in older adults at risk for dementia, with internal LOC-Cognition relating to better outcomes and improved treatment adherence. Vagal control, a key component of parasympathetic autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation, may reflect a neurophysiological biomarker of internal LOC-Cognition. We used canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to identify a shared neurophysiological marker of ANS regulation from electrocardiogram (during auditory working memory) and functional connectivity (FC) data. A canonical variable from root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) time series and between-network FC was significantly related to internal LOC-Cognition (β = 0.266, SE = 0.971, CI = [0.190, 4.073], p = 0.031) in 65 participants (mean age = 74.7, 32 female) with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). Follow-up data from 55 of these individuals (mean age = 73.6, 22 females) was used to show reliability of this relationship (β = 0.271, SE = 0.971, CI = [0.033, 2.630], p = 0.047), and a second sample (40 participants with aMCI/healthy cognition, mean age = 72.7, 24 females) showed that the canonical vector biomarker generalized to visual working memory (β = 0.36, SE = 0.136, CI = [0.023, 0.574], p = 0.037), but not inhibition task RMSSD data (β = 0.08, SE = 1.486, CI = [- 0.354, 0.657], p = 0.685). This canonical vector may represent a biomarker of autonomic regulation that explains how some older adults maintain internal LOC-Cognition as dementia progresses. Future work should further test the causality of this relationship and the modifiability of this biomarker.

Abstract
Chronic stress is both theoretically and methodologically challenging to operationalize through biomarkers. Yet minimally invasive, field-friendly biomarkers of chronic stress are valuable in research linking biology and culture, seeking to understand differential patterns of human development across ecological contexts, and exploring the evolution of human sociality. For human biologists, a central question in measurement and interpretation of biomarkers is how stress-responsive physiological systems are regulated across diverse human ecologies. This article aims to describe a conditional toolkit for human biologists interested in the study of chronic stress, highlighting a mix of longstanding and novel biomarkers, with special focus on hair/fingernail cortisol, latent herpesvirus antibodies, allostatic load indices, and serial/ambulatory data collection approaches. Future trends in chronic stress biomarker research, including epigenetic approaches, are briefly considered. This overview considers: (1) challenges in separating a distinctly psychosocial dimension of chronic stress from adversity more broadly; (2) essential characteristics of human ecology that shape interpretation; (3) retrospective vs. longitudinal sampling; (4) the role of age, developmental effects, and local biologies; (5) different timescales of chronicity; and (6) the role of culture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation has been linked to a variety of mental and physical health outcomes that disproportionately impact women, and which can impair sexual function; thus, there is reason to expect a link between inflammation and women's sexual functioning. AIM To test the hypothesis that higher concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), a general biomarker of inflammation, would predict women's lower sexual desire. METHOD As 2 independent research teams, we conducted 3 separate studies (total n = 405) that assessed salivary CRP and various measurements of sexual desire in different women populations. OUTCOMES Female Sexual Function Index, Sexual Desire Inventory-2, Decreased Sexual Desire Screener, and Sexual Interest and Desire Inventory. RESULTS Regardless of the way sexual desire was measured (e.g., state vs trait; general desire vs. desire functioning) and the population sampled (i.e., healthy vs. clinically diagnosed with sexual dysfunction), all the studies revealed null results. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS While exploratory, the convergence of these null results across studies and researchers suggests that if there is an association between inflammation and women's sexual desire, it is likely very subtle. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS Across 2 independent research teams, 3 unrelated studies, and various measurements of sexual desire, results were consistent. These points lend to the generalizability of the results. However, study designs were cross-sectional. CONCLUSIONS Future research may reveal (i) a non-linear threshold effect, such that inflammation does not begin to impact women's sexual desire until it is at a high level, (ii) inflammatory biomarkers other than CRP might be more sensitive in detecting associations between inflammation and desire, should they exist, or (iii) the mechanisms underlying sexual dysfunction may differ between sexes.
