Abstract
BACKGROUND Rates of ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-emitting tanning bed use have declined in the United States over the past decade. However, many young adults continue to indoor tan at rates that put them at risk for melanoma. There is evidence that UVR may impact addiction pathways and some people who use tanning beds experience urges to tan and diminished control over tanning which may be evidence of a behavioral addiction. However, studies have not adequately explored whether excessive tanning continues despite concerns and problems that would be expected with behavioral addiction. This represents an important gap since behavioral persistence in the face of such negative experiences is a hallmark of behavioral addiction. Further, there is a dearth of research exploring change perceptions of excessive tanners. METHODS We administered a cross-sectional online survey to women between 18 and 34 years old who reported frequent indoor tanning (at least 10 times) in the past 12 months. Participants completed the 7-item Behavioral Addiction Indoor Tanning Screener (BAITS). T- and chi-square tests were used to compare the association of theoretically informed correlates from conceptual models of behavioral addiction (e.g., concerns and problems) and tanning change/quit perceptions with results from the BAITS (i.e., a positive or negative screen for tanning addiction symptoms). RESULTS Participants were 280 non-Hispanic White women (mean age = 27.5 years (SD = 4.3)) from across the United States (mean number of past 12-month indoor tanning sessions = 40.1 (SD = 42.5)). Frequent indoor tanners with a positive BAITS score had higher mean scores for negative affect, greater worry about getting skin cancer, and more tanning-related problems compared to those with a negative score. A positive BAITS score was also associated with more perceived barriers to quitting tanning, increased interest in getting help to reduce tanning, and a higher number of quit attempts. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide unique evidence for tanning as a behavioral addiction by demonstrating an association between tanning behavioral addiction symptoms with skin cancer concerns, tanning-related problems, and unsuccessful attempts to change. These findings have implications for the design of interventions and support the need for additional research to support the conceptualization of indoor tanning as a behavioral addiction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Indoor tanning increases the risk of skin cancer and can become addictive. There is little research on indoor tanning cessation interventions. METHODS From 2019 to 2022, we conducted a clinical trial (n = 265) testing a tailored mobile messaging cessation intervention in 18- to 30-year-old females screened for indoor tanning addiction. Participants were randomized to a control arm receiving standard risk education or a cessation intervention arm receiving tailored mobile messaging for 4 weeks. The main outcomes were indoor tanning cessation, motivation to quit, quit attempts, and indoor tanning cognitions assessed at the end of treatment and 3 months later. RESULTS At the end of treatment, intervention participants were more likely to report quitting indoor tanning [OR = 2.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.99-4.44; P < 0.05], but there were no significant differences by 3 months (OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 0.82-2.87; P = 0.17). Intervention participants who did not quit reported higher motivation to quit than control participants at the end of treatment (M = 3.40, SD = 1.72, M = 2.54, SD = 1.63; P < 0.01) and 3 months (M = 3.75, SD = 1.93, M = 2.85, SD = 1.85; P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Tailored mobile messaging successfully affects indoor tanning cessation behaviors and cognitions in young adult females who meet the screening criteria for tanning addiction. IMPACT This trial provides preliminary support for the efficacy of a mobile messaging cessation intervention for young adult females who meet the screening criteria for tanning addiction. Results indicate that additional intervention features should be tested to increase the durability of effects.

Abstract
Objectives. To describe progression, content, and stringency of state legislation regulating indoor tanning and association with state government political party leadership. Methods. Trained research assistants used legal mapping methods to code legislative bills on indoor tanning introduced in US states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. We calculated composite scores on the stringency of age restrictions and of warnings, operator requirements, and enforcement. We evaluated associations of the political party of the legislative sponsor and legislature majority. Results. Between 1992 and 2023, 184 bills were introduced in 49 of 50 states and DC (56 laws were enacted, and 126 bills failed). An under-18 ban was enacted in 22 states and DC. Party affiliation of the bill sponsor and legislature majority combined to affect bill passage and age restrictions. Conclusions. In many states, it took several years and proposed bills before a law on indoor tanning was enacted. Enacted bills were more stringent than failed bills. Public Health Implications. Increasing support for stringent regulations on indoor tanning is evident and may motivate other states or the federal government to prohibit minors from using indoor tanning facilities. Abstract
Although many people who use tanning beds are aware of the negative consequences, they continue to indoor tan, possibly due to addictive properties. The purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature on tanning addiction, its potential biological mechanisms, and its association with psychological disorders. A PubMed search was conducted using the terms "Tanning Addiction," "UVR AND B-endorphin," and "tanning dependence AND gene." The articles were organized based on the following categories: endorphins, dopamine and the brain, genetic associations, and associations between tanning addiction and other disorders. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation leads to the synthesis of β-endorphins in the skin, the release of dopamine in the brain, and increased blood flow in brain regions associated with reinforcement and addiction. Genes associated with tanning addiction include PTCHD2 and ANKK1. Several psychiatric disorders are comorbidities of tanning addiction and excessive indoor tanning parallels many of the patterns of substance use disorders. In frequent indoor tanners, greater awareness of tanning's addictive potential and further development of interventions aimed at treating this addictive behaviour may be needed to stop indoor tanning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Addressing the increasing incidence of skin cancer among young adults is a priority. The objective of the Risk Information and Skin-cancer Education for Undergraduate Prevention (RISE-UP) study is to identify personalized intervention components to prevent sunburn, a clinically significant outcome highly associated with skin cancer, in college students. METHODS Guided by the Elaboration Likelihood Model, the study will use Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST) methodology to test three intervention components (ultraviolet photography, MC1R genetic testing, and action planning) each with two levels (yes v. no) in a full-factorial experiment to evaluate unique and combined effects of these components to improve outcomes over the longer-term, with seasonally timed follow-up. At-risk University of Utah students (N = 528) will be recruited. Eligibility criteria include self-reported sunburn or tanning in the past year, or not utilizing recommended sun protection. After baseline assessment, participants will be randomized to intervention group, stratified by sex. Assessments will be completed at (1) Baseline; (2) Intervention; (3) 1 month after intervention; (4) 4 months after intervention (the end of the first summer); and (5) 15 months after intervention (the end of the second summer). The primary outcome will be participants' self-reported number of sunburns. Secondary outcomes will include self-reported sun protection and tanning behaviors and, in a randomly selected subgroup, an objective measure of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. CONCLUSION The RISE-UP study will determine the efficacy of different combinations of personalized skin cancer preventative interventions for young adults and determine the optimal combination of intervention components to prevent skin cancer. Abstract
Actinic keratosis (AK) is considered a chronic skin disease mostly caused by long-term exposure to UV radiation and other risk factors such as immunosuppression, leading to an individual susceptibility for skin cancer manifestation. The treatment of AK is laborious and costly, and the incidence of skin cancer is forecasted to double until the year 2030 in an aging society.Risk factors in AK for malignant transformation in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) are not fully understood, but studies suggest that histological features, such as atypia in the basal epidermal third and basal proliferation (PRO score) in AK play a pivotal role for development of malignancy. As the clinical appearance of AK does not correlate with the risk for malignancy, guidelines suggest treating every single AK lesion upon diagnosis. Skin imaging techniques, such as line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) can help to provide an individual holistic follow-up for AK lesions by non-invasive visualization of atypia and basal proliferation. A follow-up for patients with AK may be critical for treatment success in terms of strengthening therapy adherence. When AK presents therapy refractory, cSCC manifests in nearly 30% of the cases after several years. Patients with AK suffering from field cancerization and immunosuppression are susceptible for a severe course of disease including metastasis and high mortality rates. Those vulnerable subgroups benefit from close skin cancer screening, early adequate treatment and chemoprevention, such as niacinamide or acitretin. Skin cancer prevention is substantial. Primary prevention should include chemical and physical UV-light protection and avoidance of indoor tanning. Secondary prevention is essential in high-risk populations, such as fair skin type elderly men and STORs. Tertiary prevention should comprise adequate treatment strategies to prevent therapy resistance, reoccurrence and cSCC, especially when field cancerization and immunosuppression are present.

Abstract
In 2018, the authors reported estimates of the number and proportion of cancers attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors in 2014 in the United States. These data are useful for advocating for and informing cancer prevention and control. Herein, based on up-to-date relative risk and cancer occurrence data, the authors estimated the proportion and number of invasive cancer cases (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers) and deaths, overall and for 30 cancer types among adults who were aged 30 years and older in 2019 in the United States, that were attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors. These included cigarette smoking; second-hand smoke; excess body weight; alcohol consumption; consumption of red and processed meat; low consumption of fruits and vegetables, dietary fiber, and dietary calcium; physical inactivity; ultraviolet radiation; and seven carcinogenic infections. Numbers of cancer cases and deaths were obtained from data sources with complete national coverage, risk factor prevalence estimates from nationally representative surveys, and associated relative risks of cancer from published large-scale pooled or meta-analyses. In 2019, an estimated 40.0% (713,340 of 1,781,649) of all incident cancers (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers) and 44.0% (262,120 of 595,737) of all cancer deaths in adults aged 30 years and older in the United States were attributable to the evaluated risk factors. Cigarette smoking was the leading risk factor contributing to cancer cases and deaths overall (19.3% and 28.5%, respectively), followed by excess body weight (7.6% and 7.3%, respectively), and alcohol consumption (5.4% and 4.1%, respectively). For 19 of 30 evaluated cancer types, more than one half of the cancer cases and deaths were attributable to the potentially modifiable risk factors considered in this study. Lung cancer had the highest number of cancer cases (201,660) and deaths (122,740) attributable to evaluated risk factors, followed by female breast cancer (83,840 cases), skin melanoma (82,710), and colorectal cancer (78,440) for attributable cases and by colorectal (25,800 deaths), liver (14,720), and esophageal (13,600) cancer for attributable deaths. Large numbers of cancer cases and deaths in the United States are attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors, underscoring the potential to substantially reduce the cancer burden through broad and equitable implementation of preventive initiatives.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, has witnessed a notable increase in incidence over the past decades. Despite advancements in treatment, it remains a significant cause of cancer mortality. Understanding demographic trends and variations in melanoma mortality is crucial for addressing disparities and implementing effective interventions. METHODS Using the Centers for Disease Control Wide Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) database, we analyzed melanoma mortality data in the United States from 1999 to 2020. Data were stratified by demographic and regional variables, and age-adjusted mortality rates were calculated. Descriptive analysis was performed and Joinpoint regression analysis was employed to identify temporal trends. RESULTS Between 1999 and 2020, there were 184,416 melanoma-related deaths in the United States Overall, the age-adjusted mortality rate declined from 2.7 to 2.0 per 100,000 people at a rate of -1.3% annually, with significant variations across demographic groups and regions. Men, non-Hispanic White individuals, and those aged > 65 experienced higher mortality rates. Non-Hispanic White individuals noted the steepest decrease in AAMR after 2013 at a rate of -6.1% annually. Disparities were seen by geographic density, with rural populations exhibiting higher mortality compared to their urban and suburban counterparts. CONCLUSION The study highlights a significant reduction in melanoma mortality in the U.S. since 2013, potentially attributed to advancements in diagnostic techniques such as dermoscopy and the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Disparities persist, particularly among rural populations. Targeted interventions focusing on increased screening and education are warranted to further mitigate melanoma mortality and address demographic disparities.

Abstract
Exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation and use of UV-emitting tanning devices are known risk factors for skin cancer. Few studies have explored the interaction between these risk factors, namely how the risk of skin cancer increases among those who both have been exposed to high levels of natural sunlight and regularly use tanning beds. Nurses' Health Study II followed 116,430 women, aged 25-42, from 1991 to 2011. Cumulative average UV exposure was based on participants' residences at follow-up periods. History of severe sunburn during ages 15-20 was used as a proxy for early-life sunlight exposure. Tanning bed use in early life data was collected. Participants reported melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) diagnoses. We built multivariable Cox regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of skin cancer associated with joint effects of sunlight exposure and tanning bed use. Participants with high sunlight exposure and tanning bed use during high school/college had an increased risk of BCC (HR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.37-1.71, Pinteraction=0.01; vs. low sun exposure and no tanning bed use). Participants with a history of severe sunburns and tanning bed use during high school/college were at increased risk of BCC (HR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.47-1.79, Pinteraction=0.02; vs. no sunburns and no tanning bed use). No significant interactions were found between sunlight exposure and tanning bed use on SCC and melanoma risk. We found significant interactions between sunlight exposure and tanning bed use on the risk of BCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rates of melanoma have increased dramatically in the United States over the past 25 years, and it has become among the most prevalent cancers for young adult women. Intentional skin tanning leads to a pattern of intense and intermittent UV radiation exposure that is associated with increased risk of melanoma. Frequent tanning is most common among young women and is linked to a variety of sociocultural pressures that negatively impact body image and drive appearance control behaviors. Unfortunately, there are no established interventions designed for frequent tanners. This intervention addresses this gap with unique content informed by body image and acceptance-based interventions. The intervention is delivered using Facebook secret groups, an approach designed to support behavior change and ensure scalability. OBJECTIVE This study aims to describe the rationale and methodology of a randomized controlled trial of a melanoma prevention program targeting young women engaged in frequent indoor or outdoor UV tanning. METHODS Participants are women aged 18-25 years who report high-risk tanning (ie, at least 10 indoor tanning sessions in the past 12 months or 10 outdoor sessions in the previous summer). After recruitment and screening, participants completed a baseline survey and were randomly assigned to receive the intervention or an attention-matched control condition. Both conditions were 8-week-long Facebook groups (approximately 25 members each) with daily posting of content. Follow-up surveys are administered at 3, 8, and 18 months after baseline. The primary trial outcome is the combined number of indoor and outdoor tanning sessions reported at the 8-month follow-up. Hypothesized intervention mediators are assessed at the 3-month follow-up. RESULTS This project was funded by a National Cancer Institute award (R01 CA218068), and the trial procedures were approved by the University of Kentucky Institutional Review Board in February 2020. Trial recruitment and enrollment occurred in 6 waves of data collection, which started in February 2022 and closed in May 2023. The study is closed to enrollment but remains open for follow-ups, and this protocol report was prepared before data analyses. As of February 2024, all participants have completed the 8-month follow-up assessment, and data collection is scheduled to close by the end of 2024 after the collection of the 18-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS This trial will contribute unique knowledge to the field of skin cancer prevention, as no fully powered trials have examined the efficacy of an intervention designed for frequent indoor or outdoor tanning. The trial may also contribute evidence of the value in translating principles of body image and acceptance-based interventions into the field of skin cancer prevention and beyond. If successful, the use of the Facebook platform is intended to aid in dissemination as it provides a way to embed the intervention into individuals' everyday routines. Abstract
BACKGROUND Many emerging adults (EAs) are prone to making unhealthy choices, which increase their risk of premature cancer morbidity and mortality. In the era of social media, rigorous research on interventions to promote health behaviors for cancer risk reduction among EAs delivered over social media is limited. Cancer prevention information and recommendations may reach EAs more effectively over social media than in settings such as health care, schools, and workplaces, particularly for EAs residing in rural areas. OBJECTIVE This pragmatic randomized trial aims to evaluate a multirisk factor intervention using a social media campaign designed with community advisers aimed at decreasing cancer risk factors among EAs. The trial will target EAs from diverse backgrounds living in rural counties in the Four Corners states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. METHODS We will recruit a sample of EAs (n=1000) aged 18 to 26 years residing in rural counties (Rural-Urban Continuum Codes 4 to 9) in the Four Corners states from the Qualtrics' research panel and enroll them in a randomized stepped-wedge, quasi-experimental design. The inclusion criteria include English proficiency and regular social media engagement. A social media intervention will promote guideline-related goals for increased physical activity, healthy eating, and human papillomavirus vaccination and reduced nicotine product use, alcohol intake, and solar UV radiation exposure. Campaign posts will cover digital and media literacy skills, responses to misinformation, communication with family and friends, and referral to community resources. The intervention will be delivered over 12 months in Facebook private groups and will be guided by advisory groups of community stakeholders and EAs and focus groups with EAs. The EAs will complete assessments at baseline and at 12, 26, 39, 52, and 104 weeks after randomization. Assessments will measure 6 cancer risk behaviors, theoretical mediators, and participants' engagement with the social media campaign. RESULTS The trial is in its start-up phase. It is being led by a steering committee. Team members are working in 3 subcommittees to optimize community engagement, the social media intervention, and the measures to be used. The Stakeholder Organization Advisory Board and Emerging Adult Advisory Board were formed and provided initial input on the priority of cancer risk factors to target, social media use by EAs, and community resources available. A framework for the social media campaign with topics, format, and theoretical mediators has been created, along with protocols for campaign management. CONCLUSIONS Social media can be used as a platform to counter misinformation and improve reliable health information to promote health behaviors that reduce cancer risks among EAs. Because of the popularity of web-based information sources among EAs, an innovative, multirisk factor intervention using a social media campaign has the potential to reduce their cancer risk behaviors. Abstract
PURPOSE Previous studies on cancer risk among agricultural producers have focused on occupational exposures, with only a few studies examining behavioral factors. The aim of this study was to understand cancer risky and preventative behaviors among the large farming population in Nebraska. METHODS A statewide cross-sectional study of farmers in Nebraska aged 19 and older was conducted in 2019 (n = 782). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with being up to date on cancer screening and with cancer risky and preventive behaviors. FINDINGS The 93.68% of the Nebraska farmers population do not meet the daily recommended consumption of fruits and vegetables, and 70.14% reported regular alcohol consumption. The proportion of adults up to date on cancer screening was 79.57% for breast, 67.55% for cervical, 85.54% for colorectal, and 46.05% for skin cancers. Compared to women, men had a higher odds of heavy alcohol consumption (aOR 2.96, 95% CI 1.94-4.56) and ever smoking 100 or more cigarettes (aOR 1.66, 95% CI 1.03-2.73). The odds of being current with skin cancer screening was higher among those with higher incomes (aOR 1.77, 95% CI 1.06-3.01). Compared to men aged 50-64, the odds of being current with prostate cancer screening was higher among men aged 65-74 (aOR: 2.65, 95% CI 1.10-7.31) and 75 and older (aOR: 7.73, 95% CI 2.03-51.73). CONCLUSIONS Disparities in cancer screening and risk and preventive behaviors exist among farmers in Nebraska. The study highlights a need for continuing efforts to improve preventive cancer behaviors targeted to the farming population.

Abstract
Exposure to ultraviolet radiation emitted by indoor tanning devices (sunbeds) has well-documented negative effects on human health, but no clear benefit beyond cosmetic outcomes. Sunbed use is responsible for a significant proportion of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, especially in patients exposed to this practice in early life, premature skin ageing, immunosuppression, skin burns, and eye damage. Artificial tanning is now seen as a public health issue. In this review we discuss the potential additive effect of indoor tanning, misleading facts regarding sunbed benefit, safety concerns and negative effects on human health, indoor tanning legislation and current position of several international organisations, and the impact of some policies adopted in order to mitigate the effects of this dangerous practice.

Abstract
Simple Summary Melanoma constitutes a major public health risk, with the rates of diagnosis increasing on a yearly basis. Monitoring for risk factors and preventing dangerous behaviors that increase melanoma risk, such as tanning, are important measures for melanoma prevention. Additionally, assessing the effectiveness of various methods to prevent sun exposure and sunburns—which can lead to melanoma—is important to help identify ways to reduce the development of melanoma. We summarize the recent evidence regarding the heritable and behavioral risks underlying melanoma, as well as the current methods used to reduce the risk of developing melanoma and to improve the diagnosis of this disease. Abstract (1) Melanoma is the most aggressive dermatologic malignancy, with an estimated 106,110 new cases to be diagnosed in 2021. The annual incidence rates continue to climb, which underscores the critical importance of improving the methods to prevent this disease. The interventions to assist with melanoma prevention vary and typically include measures such as UV avoidance and the use of protective clothing, sunscreen, and other chemopreventive agents. However, the evidence is mixed surrounding the use of these and other interventions. This review discusses the heritable etiologies underlying melanoma development before delving into the data surrounding the preventive methods highlighted above. (2) A comprehensive literature review was performed to identify the clinical trials, observational studies, and meta-analyses pertinent to melanoma prevention and incidence. Online resources were queried to identify epidemiologic and clinical trial information. (3) Evidence exists to support population-wide screening programs, the proper use of sunscreen, and community-targeted measures in the prevention of melanoma. Clinical evidence for the majority of the proposed preventive chemotherapeutics is presently minimal but continues to evolve. (4) Further study of these chemotherapeutics, as well as improvement of techniques in artificial intelligence and imaging techniques for melanoma screening, is warranted for continued improvement of melanoma prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals from melanoma-prone families have similar or reduced sun-protective behaviors compared to the general population. Studies on trends in sun-related behaviors have been temporally and geographically limited. METHODS Individuals from an international consortium of melanoma-prone families (GenoMEL) were retrospectively asked about sunscreen use, sun exposure (time spent outside), sunburns, and sunbed use at several timepoints over their lifetime. Generalized linear mixed models were used to examine the association between these outcomes and birth cohort defined by decade spans, after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS A total of 2407 participants from 547 families across 17 centers were analyzed. Sunscreen use increased across subsequent birth cohorts, and although the likelihood of sunburns increased until the 1950s birth cohort, it decreased thereafter. Average sun exposure did not change across the birth cohorts, and the likelihood of sunbed use increased in more recent birth cohorts. We generally did not find any differences in sun-related behavior when comparing melanoma cases to non-cases. Melanoma cases had increased sunscreen use, decreased sun exposure, and decreased odds of sunburn and sunbed use after melanoma diagnosis compared to before diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS Although sunscreen use has increased and the likelihood of sunburns has decreased in more recent birth cohorts, individuals in melanoma-prone families have not reduced their overall sun exposure and had an increased likelihood of sunbed use in more recent birth cohorts. These observations demonstrate partial improvements in melanoma prevention and suggest that additional intervention strategies may be needed to achieve optimal sun-protective behavior in melanoma-prone families.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or indoor tanning is the cause of most skin cancers. Although indoor tanning has decreased in recent years, it remains most common among adolescents and young adults, whose skin is particularly vulnerable to long-term damage. US states have adopted several types of legislation to attempt to minimize indoor tanning among minors: a ban on indoor tanning among all minors, a partial minor ban by age (eg, <14 years), or the requirement of parental consent or accompaniment for tanning. Currently, only 6 US states have no indoor tanning legislation for minors. OBJECTIVE This study investigated whether internet searches (as an indicator of interest) related to indoor tanning varied across US states by the type of indoor tanning legislation, using data from Google Trends from 2006 to 2019. METHODS We conducted a time-series analysis of Google Trends data on indoor tanning from 2006 to 2019 by US state. Time-series linear regression models were generated to assess the Google Trends data over time by the type of indoor tanning legislation. RESULTS We found that indoor tanning search rates decreased significantly for all 50 states and the District of Columbia over time (P<.01). The searches peaked in 2012 when indoor tanning received marked attention (eg, indoor tanning was banned for all minors by the first state-California). The reduction in search rates was more marked for states with a complete ban among minors compared to those with less restrictive types of legislation. CONCLUSIONS Our findings are consistent with those of other studies on the association between indoor tanning regulations and attitudinal and behavioral trends related to indoor tanning. The main limitation of the study is that raw search data were not available for more precise analysis. With changes in interest and norms, indoor tanning and skin cancer risk among young people may change. Future studies should continue to determine the impact of such public health policies in order to inform policy efforts and minimize risks to public health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge of its potential cancer risk is often not enough to motivate individuals to avoid indoor tanning. Previous research has found that emotions toward indoor tanning and appearance motivations may prompt people to continue despite the risks. METHODS We conducted two online surveys of US young adult women. Study one included a convenience sample of female undergraduates (N = 502) at a university in the northwestern USA. Study two included young women from a nationwide US online panel (N = 270). RESULTS Results suggest that emotional associations, both positive and negative, with indoor tanning explain greater variances in indoor tanning behavior than demographics and previously established psychosocial predictors of tanning alone. Appearance motivations were also positively associated with indoor tanning in both samples. CONCLUSIONS This research has implications for health care providers and health communicators, as indoor tanning prevention messages and campaigns should consider the association between both positive and negative emotions on tanning behaviors as well as appearance motivations.

Abstract
Frequent indoor tanning bed use is an established public health concern, yet research on tanning cessation interventions for frequent tanners is lacking. We describe the protocol for a brief, web-based tanning behavior change intervention and present evidence that it is acceptable and engaging to frequent indoor tanners. Lower tanning rates were not observed among participants receiving the intervention in a randomized controlled trial but participants' interest in changing tanning increased. This intervention could be a useful approach to increasing frequent tanners' interest in behavior change and openness to engaging within a more intensive, multi-component tanning cessation program.Trial Registration: NCT03448224 Clinical Trials.gov (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03448224?cond=NCT03448224&draw=2&rank=1).
