Molecular study of wound healing after using biosynthesized BNC/Fe3O4 nanocomposites assisted with a bioinformatics approach

In-vivo and in-vitro wound healing and tissue repair effect of Trametes versicolor polysaccharide extract

Regarding different medical benefits of fungi, using the medical mushroom extracts as wound-healing agents is gaining popularity. This study, evaluated the wound healing characteristics of Trametes versicolor. Anti-oxidant activity addressed by employing the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay resulting 53.7% inhibitory effect. Besides, for anti-microbial ability determination, the MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) of extract measured which Escherichia coli growth was inhibited at 1.1 mg/ml, and Staphylococcus aureus did not grow at 4.38 mg/ml of extract. The MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) method indicated dose dependence of the extract with 63 ± 3% and 28 ± 3% viability at 1250 μg/ml and 156.25 μg/ml of extract, which higher concentration caused higher cell viability. The outcome of gene expression analysis determined that overall expression of FGF2 (Fibroblast Growth Factor 2), IL-1β (Interleukin-1β), and TGF-β1 (Transforming Growth Factor-β1) was 4 times higher at 48 h than at 24 h in treated cells, suggesting a stimulating effect on cell growth. An in-vivo animal model suggested enhanced wound healing process after treatment with 0.01 g of extract. Furthermore, the number of fibroblasts, epidermal thickness, and collagen fiber was respectively 2, 3, and threefold higher in treated mice when compared to untreated mice. The treated wounds of mice showed 100% and 60% of untreated mice of healing within 14 days. The results of this research show promise for the fungus-based wound healing treatments, which may help with tissue regeneration and the healing of cutaneous wounds.

Comparison of different methods for synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles and investigation of their cellular properties, and antioxidant potential

Iron oxide nanoparticles could play a useful role in lung cancer therapy. Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by plant mediated synthesis, chemical, and microbial mediated synthesis. iron oxide nanoparticle polyethylene glycol cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (Fe2O3@PEG@CDDP(, iron oxide nanoparticle polyethylene glycol (Fe2O3@PEG), and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) were evaluated for their antioxidant,and in vitro cytotoxicity tests. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), mapping, and zeta potential were used to characterize the synthesized iron oxides NPs. Cell toxicity was determined using A549 and HFF cells by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The antioxidant scavenging activity of Fe2O3@PEG@CDDP, Fe2O3@PEG, and CDDP displayed IC50 values (11.96, 26.74, and 3.17 μg/ml) and (8.54, 11.4, and 1.14 μg/ml) in 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays, respectively. Nanoparticles obtained from plant mediated synthesis method showed the great antioxidant activity. Results showed that, green-method synthesized nanoparticles were the most effective at killing cancer cells. Thus, the characteristics of nanoparticles from green synthesis are more valuable than the other methods. Green synthesis is environmental friendly cost-effective, and easy approach for synthesize NPs.

Metal/metal oxide-carbohydrate polymers framework for industrial and biological applications: Current advancements and future directions

Recently, the development and consumption of metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites (M/MOCPNs) are withdrawing significant attention because of their numerous salient features. Metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites are being used as environmentally friendly alternatives for traditional metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites exhibit variable properties that make them excellent prospects for a variety of biological and industrial uses. In metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites, carbohydrate polymers bind with metallic atoms and ions using coordination bonding in which heteroatoms of polar functional groups behave as adsorption centers. Metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites are widely used in woundhealing, additional biological uses and drug delivery, heavy ions removal or metal decontamination, and dye removal. The present review article features the collection of some major biological and industrial applications of metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites. The binding affinity of carbohydrate polymers with metal atoms and ions in metal/metal oxide carbohydrate polymer nanocomposites has also been described.

Updates on Biogenic Metallic and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Therapy, Drug Delivery and Cytotoxicity

The ambition to combat the issues affecting the environment and human health triggers the development of biosynthesis that incorporates the production of natural compounds by living organisms via eco-friendly nano assembly. Biosynthesized nanoparticles (NPs) have various pharmaceutical applications, such as tumoricidal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobials, antiviral, etc. When combined, bio-nanotechnology and drug delivery give rise to the development of various pharmaceutics with site-specific biomedical applications. In this review, we have attempted to summarize in brief the types of renewable biological systems used for the biosynthesis of metallic and metal oxide NPs and the vital contribution of biogenic NPs as pharmaceutics and drug carriers simultaneously. The biosystem used for nano assembly further affects the morphology, size, shape, and structure of the produced nanomaterial. The toxicity of the biogenic NPs, because of their pharmacokinetic behavior in vitro and in vivo, is also discussed, together with some recent achievements towards enhanced biocompatibility, bioavailability, and reduced side effects. Because of the large biodiversity, the potential biomedical application of metal NPs produced via natural extracts in biogenic nanomedicine is yet to be explored.

Density-Based High-Quality Fat: Characterization and Correlation with Different Body Fat Ratio

BACKGROUND

Lipoaspirate can be divided into high-quality fat and low-quality fat using Coleman's centrifugation by adding 0.935 g/ml marker float; the ratio obtained by different individuals is different.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to examine the HQF obtained from different individuals and establish the relationship between individual body data and HQF.

METHODS

We used Coleman's centrifugation method (1200 g, 3 min) with 0.935 g/ml density float to process lipoaspirate and collect HQF from different individuals for the analysis of fat characteristics and in vivo grafting.

RESULTS

The HQF obtained from different individuals had similar stromal vascular fraction cell numbers and extracellular matrix content. In animal experiments at different time points (especially 12 weeks), the appearance, retention rate, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and immunohistochemistry results of HQF grafts were similar, while being different from those of Coleman fat. The HQF obtained from individuals with higher body fat ratio was less than those with lower body fat ratio. Following the establishment of the relationship between high-quality fat percentage and the body fat ratio of the donors, we proposed an innovative calculation formula model for the required lipoaspirate.

CONCLUSIONS

HQF obtained from different individuals has similar fat characteristics, transplantation process, and outcome. The HQF percentage obtained from different individuals is negatively correlated with the body fat ratio. The amount of liposuction can be predicted using the proposed formula and improve the predictability of fat transplantation.

Magnetic nanocomposites for biomedical applications

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have solved numerous problems related to the repair and regeneration of damaged organs and tissues arising from aging, illnesses, and injuries. Nanotechnology has further aided tissue regeneration science and has provided outstanding opportunities to help disease diagnosis as well as treat damaged tissues. Based on the most recent findings, magnetic nanostructures (MNSs), in particular, have emerged as promising materials for detecting, directing, and supporting tissue regeneration. There have been many reports concerning the role of these nano-building blocks in the regeneration of both soft and hard tissues, but the subject has not been extensively reviewed. Here, we review, classify, and discuss various synthesis strategies for novel MNSs used in medicine. Advanced applications of magnetic nanocomposites (MG-NCs), specifically magnetic nanostructures, are further systematically reviewed. In addition, the scientific and technical aspects of MG-NC used in medicine are discussed considering the requirements for the field. In summary, this review highlights the numerous opportunities and challenges associated with the use of MG-NCs as smart nanocomposites (NCs) in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Research status of biodegradable metals designed for oral and maxillofacial applications: A review

The oral and maxillofacial regions have complex anatomical structures and different tissue types, which have vital health and aesthetic functions. Biodegradable metals (BMs) is a promising bioactive materials to treat oral and maxillofacial diseases. This review summarizes the research status and future research directions of BMs for oral and maxillofacial applications. Mg-based BMs and Zn-based BMs for bone fracture fixation systems, and guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes, are discussed in detail. Zn-based BMs with a moderate degradation rate and superior mechanical properties for GBR membranes show great potential for clinical translation. Fe-based BMs have a relatively low degradation rate and insoluble degradation products, which greatly limit their application and clinical translation. Furthermore, we proposed potential future research directions for BMs in the oral and maxillofacial regions, including 3D printed BM bone scaffolds, surface modification for BMs GBR membranes, and BMs containing hydrogels for cartilage regeneration, soft tissue regeneration, and nerve regeneration. Taken together, the progress made in the development of BMs in oral and maxillofacial regions has laid a foundation for further clinical translation.

Anti-bacterial and wound healing-promoting effects of zinc ferrite nanoparticles

BACKGROUND

Increasing antibiotic resistance continues to focus on research into the discovery of novel antimicrobial agents. Due to its antimicrobial and wound healing-promoting activity, metal nanoparticles have attracted attention for dermatological applications. This study is designed to investigate the scope and bactericidal potential of zinc ferrite nanoparticles (ZnFe₂O₄ NPs), and the mechanism of anti-bacterial action along with cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and wound healing properties.

RESULTS

ZnFe₂O₄ NPs were synthesized via a modified co-precipitation method. Structure, size, morphology, and elemental compositions of ZnFe₂O₄ NPs were analyzed using X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In PrestoBlue and live/dead assays, ZnFe₂O₄ NPs exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxic effects on human dermal fibroblasts. In addition, the hemocompatibility assay revealed that the NPs do not significantly rupture red blood cells up to a dose of 1000 µg/mL. Bacterial live/dead imaging and zone of inhibition analysis demonstrated that ZnFe₂O₄ NPs showed dose-dependent bactericidal activities in various strains of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Interestingly, NPs showed antimicrobial activity through multiple mechanisms, such as cell membrane damage, protein leakage, and reactive oxygen species generation, and were more effective against gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, in vitro scratch assay revealed that ZnFe₂O₄ NPs improved cell migration and proliferation of cells, with noticeable shrinkage of the artificial wound model.

CONCLUSIONS

This study indicated that ZnFe₂O₄ NPs have the potential to be used as a future antimicrobial and wound healing drug.

Latest Advances on Bacterial Cellulose-Based Antibacterial Materials as Wound Dressings

At present, there are various wound dressings that can protect the wound from further injury or isolate the external environment in wound treatment. Whereas, infection and slow self-healing still exist in wound healing process. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an ideal wound dressing with good biocompatibility and strong antibacterial activity to promote wound healing. Bacterial cellulose is a kind of promising biopolymer because it can control wound exudate and provide a moist environment for wound healing. However, the lack of antibacterial activity limits its application. In this paper, the advantages of bacterial cellulose as wound dressings were introduced, and the preparation and research progress of bacterial cellulose-based antibacterial composites in recent years were reviewed, including adding antibiotics, combining with inorganic antibacterial agents or organic antibacterial agents. Finally, the existing problems and future development direction of bacterial cellulose-based antibacterial wound dressings were discussed.

Aloe vera: A Medicinal Plant Used in Skin Wound Healing

Skin injury is a major problem threatening human physical and mental health, and how to promote wound healing has been the focus. Developing new wound dressings is an important strategy in skin regeneration. Aloe vera is a medicinal plant with a long history, complex constituents, and various pharmacological activities. Many studies have shown that A. vera plays an important role in promoting wound healing. Adding A. vera to wound dressing has become an ideal way. This review will describe the process of skin injury and wound healing and analyze the role of A. vera in wound healing. In addition, the types of wound dressing and the applications of A. vera in wound dressing will be discussed.

Biogenic nanoparticles: a comprehensive perspective in synthesis, characterization, application and its challenges

BACKGROUND

Translating the conventional scientific concepts into a new robust invention is a much needed one at a present scenario to develop some novel materials with intriguing properties. Particles in nanoscale exhibit superior activity than their bulk counterpart. This unique feature is intensively utilized in physical, chemical, and biological sectors. Each metal is holding unique optical properties that can be utilized to synthesize metallic nanoparticles. At present, versatile nanoparticles were synthesized through chemical and biological methods. Metallic nanoparticles pose numerous scientific merits and have promising industrial applications. But concerning the pros and cons of metallic nanoparticle synthesis methods, researchers elevate to drive the synthesis process of nanoparticles through the utilization of plant resources as a substitute for use of chemicals and reagents under the theme of green chemistry. These synthesized nanoparticles exhibit superior antimicrobial, anticancer, larvicidal, leishmaniasis, wound healing, antioxidant, and as a sensor. Therefore, the utilization of such conceptualized nanoparticles in treating infectious and environmental applications is a warranted one.

CONCLUSION

Green chemistry is a keen prudence method, in which bioresources is used as a template for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Therefore, in this review, we exclusively update the context of plant-based metallic nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, and applications in detailed coverage. Hopefully, our review will be modernizing the recent trends going on in metallic nanoparticles synthesis for the blooming research fraternities.

Bacterial cellulose-based magnetic nanocomposites: A review

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural polymer that has unique and interesting structural, physical and chemical properties. These characteristics make it very attractive as a starting point for several novel developments in innovative research. However, the pristine BC lacks certain properties, in particular, magnetic property, which can be imparted to BC by incorporation of several types of magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetic nanocomposites based on BC exhibit additional magnetic functionality on top of the excellent properties of pristine BC, which make them promising materials with potential uses in various medical and environmental applications, as well as in advanced electronic devices. This review has compiled information about all classes of BC magnetic nanocomposites fabricated by various synthesis approaches and an overview of applications as well as improved features of these materials. A summary of the key developments of BC magnetic nanocomposites and emphasis on novel advances in this field is presented.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Magnetically Targeted Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Laser-Induced Skin Injuries in Rats

Introduction

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising resource for tissue regeneration and repair. However, their clinical application is hindered by technical limitations related to MSC enrichment at the target sites.

Methods

MSCs were labeled with magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs). We analyzed the effects of NP on cell proliferation, stem cell characteristics, and cytokine secretion. Furthermore, we induced NP-labeled MSC migration with an external magnetic field toward laser-induced skin wounds in rats and evaluated the associated anti-inflammatory effects.

Results

Fe₃O₄ NP application did not adversely affect MSC characteristics. Moreover, Fe₃O₄ NP-labeled MSCs presented increased anti-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine production compared with unlabeled MSCs. Furthermore, MSCs accumulated at the injury site and magnetic targeting promoted NP-labeled MSC migration toward burn injury sites in vivo. On day 7 following MSC injection, reduced inflammation and promoted angiogenesis were observed in the magnetically targeted MSC group. In addition, anti-inflammatory factors were upregulated, whereas pro-inflammatory factors were downregulated within the magnetically targeted MSC group compared with those in the PBS group.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates that magnetically targeted MSCs contribute to cell migration to the site of skin injury, improve anti-inflammatory effects and enhance angiogenesis compared with MSC injection alone. Therefore, magnetically targeted MSC therapy may be an effective treatment approach for epithelial tissue injuries.

Bio-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles for cancer treatment

Various living organisms, such as bacteria, plants, and animals can synthesize iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP). The mechanism of nanoparticle (NP) formation is usually described as relying on the reduction of ferric/ferrous iron ions into crystallized nanoparticulate iron that is surrounded by an organic stabilizing layer. The properties of these NP are characterized by a composition made of different types of iron oxide whose most stable and purest one appears to be maghemite, by a size predominantly comprised between 5 and 380 nm, by a crystalline core, by a surface charge which depends on the nature of the material coating the iron oxide, and by certain other properties such as a sterility, stability, production in mass, absence of aggregation, that have apparently only been studied in details for IONP synthesized by magnetotactic bacteria, called magnetosomes. In the majority of studies, bio-synthesized IONP are described as being biocompatible and as not inducing cytotoxicity towards healthy cells. Anti-tumor activity of bio-synthesized IONP has mainly been demonstrated in vitro, where this type of NP displayed cytotoxicity towards certain tumor cells, e.g. through the anti-tumor activity of IONP coating or through IONP anti-oxidizing property. Concerning in vivo anti-tumor activity, it was essentially highlighted for magnetosomes administered in different types of glioblastoma tumors (U87-Luc and GL-261), which were exposed to a series of alternating magnetic field applications, resulting in mild hyperthermia treatments at typical temperatures of 41-45 °C, leading to the full disappearance of these tumors without any observable side effects.

Current progress on the production, modification, and applications of bacterial cellulose

Adoption of biomass for the development of biobased products has become a routine agenda in evolutionary metabolic engineering. Cellulose produced by bacteria is a "rising star" for this sustainable development. Unlike plant cellulose, bacterial cellulose (BC) shows several unique properties like a high degree of crystallinity, high purity, high water retention, high mechanical strength, and enhanced biocompatibility. Favored with those extraordinary properties, BC could serve as ideal biomass for the development of various industrial products. However, a low yield and the requirement for large growth media have been a persistent challenge in mass production of BC. A significant number of techniques has been developed in achieving efficient BC production. This includes the modification of bioreactors, fermentation parameters, and growth media. In this article, we summarize progress in metabolic engineering in order to solve BC growth limitation. This article emphasizes current engineered BC production by using various bioreactors, as well as highlighting the structure of BC fermented by different types of engineered-bioreactors. The comprehensive overview of the future applications of BC, aims to provide readers with insight into new economic opportunities of BC and their modifiable properties for various industrial applications. Modifications in chemical composition, structure, and genetic regulation, which preceded the advancement of BC applications, were also emphasized.

Stromal vascular fraction promotes migration of fibroblasts and angiogenesis through regulation of extracellular matrix in the skin wound healing process

Background

A refractory wound is a typical complication of diabetes and is a common outcome after surgery. Current approaches have difficulty in improving wound healing. Recently, non-expanded stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which is derived from mature fat, has opened up new directions for the treatment of refractory wound healing. The aim of the current study is to systematically investigate the impact of SVF on wound healing, including the rate and characteristics of wound healing, ability of fibroblasts to migrate, and blood transport reconstruction, with a special emphasis on their precise molecular mechanisms.

Methods

SVF was isolated by digestion, followed by filtration and centrifugation, and then validated by immunocytochemistry, a MTS proliferation assay and multilineage potential analysis. A wound model was generated by creating 6-mm-diameter wounds, which include a full skin defect, on the backs of streptozocin-induced hyperglycemic mice. SVF or human adipose-derived stem cell (hADSC) suspensions were subcutaneously injected, and the wounds were characterized over a 9-day period by photography and measurements. A scratch test was used to determine whether changes in the migratory ability of fibroblasts occurred after co-culture with hADSCs. Angiogenesis was observed with human umbilical vein endothelial cells. mRNA from fibroblasts, endotheliocyte, and skin tissue were sequenced by high-throughput RNAseq, and differentially expressed genes, and pathways, potentially regulated by SVF or hADSCs were bioinformatically analyzed.

Results

Our data show that hADSCs have multiple characteristics of MSC. SVF and hADSCs significantly improved wound healing in hyperglycemic mice. hADSCs improve the migratory ability of fibroblasts and capillary structure formation in HUVECs. SVF promotes wound healing by focusing on angiogenesis and matrix remodeling.

Conclusions

Both SVF and hADSCs improve the function of fibroblast and endothelial cells, regulate gene expression, and promote skin healing. Various mechanisms likely are involved, including migration of fibroblasts, tubulogenesis of endothelial cells through regulation of cell adhesion, and cytokine pathways.

Development of nanotechnology for advancement and application in wound healing: a review

Wound healing is a series of different dynamic and complex phenomena. Many studies have been carried out based on the type and severity of wounds. However, to recover wounds faster there are no suitable drugs available, which are highly stable, less expensive as well as has no side effects. Nanomaterials have been proven to be the most promising agent for faster wound healing among all the other wound healing materials. This review briefly discusses the recent developments of wound healing by nanotechnology, their applicability and advantages. Nanomaterials have unique physicochemical, optical, and biological properties. Some of them can be directly applied for wound healing or some of them can be incorporated into scaffolds to create hydrogel matrix or nanocomposites, which promote wound healing through their antimicrobial, as well as selective anti- and pro-inflammatory, and proangiogenic properties. Owing to their high surface area to volume ratio, nanomaterials have not only been used for drug delivery vectors but also can affect wound healing by influencing collagen deposition and realignment and provide approaches for skin tissue regeneration.

Gastroprotective activity of a novel Schiff base derived dibromo substituted compound against ethanol-induced acute gastric lesions in rats

BACKGROUND

Basic function of bromine in body is to activate pepsin production in gastritis with low acidity. The present study encompasses a broad in vivo study to evaluate gastroprotective activity of a novel dibromo substituted Schiff base complex against Sprague Dawley (SD) rats.

METHODS

2, 2'-[1, 2-cyclohexanediylbis (nitriloethylidyne)]bis(4-bromophenol) (CNBP) is synthesized via a Schiff base reaction, using the related ketone and diamine as the starting materials. SD rats are divided as normal, ulcer control (5 ml/kg of 10% Tween 20), testing (10 and 20 mg/kg of CNBP) and reference groups (omeprazole 20 mg/kg). Except for the normal group, the rest of the groups are induced gastric ulcer by ethanol 1 h after the pre-treatment. Ulcer area, gastric wall mucus, and acidity of gastric content of the animal stomachs are measured after euthanization. Antioxidant activity of the compound is tested by Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) test and safety of the compound is identified through acute toxicity by [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Moreover, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), levels of prostaglandins E₂ (PGE₂) and also malondialdehyde (MDA) are determined.

RESULTS

Antioxidant activity of CNBP was approved via FRAP assay. Vast shallow hemorrhagic injury of gastric glandular mucosa was observed in the ulcer group compared to the CNBP-treated animals. Histological evaluations confirmed stomach epithelial defense effect of CNBP with drastic decrease of gastric ulceration, edema and leucocytes penetration of submucosal stratum. Immunostaining exhibited over-expression in HSP70 protein in CNBP-treated groups compared to that of the ulcer group. Also, gastric protein analysis showed low levels of MDA, PGE₂ and high activity of SOD and CAT.

CONCLUSIONS

CNBP with noticeable antioxidant property showed gastroprotective activity in the testing rodents via alteration of HSP70 protein expression. Also, antioxidant enzyme activities which were changed after treatment with CNBP in the animals could be elucidated as its gastroprotective properties.

Versatile Application of Nanocellulose: From Industry to Skin Tissue Engineering and Wound Healing

Nanocellulose is cellulose in the form of nanostructures, i.e., features not exceeding 100 nm at least in one dimension. These nanostructures include nanofibrils, found in bacterial cellulose; nanofibers, present particularly in electrospun matrices; and nanowhiskers, nanocrystals, nanorods, and nanoballs. These structures can be further assembled into bigger two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) nano-, micro-, and macro-structures, such as nanoplatelets, membranes, films, microparticles, and porous macroscopic matrices. There are four main sources of nanocellulose: bacteria (Gluconacetobacter), plants (trees, shrubs, herbs), algae (Cladophora), and animals (Tunicata). Nanocellulose has emerged for a wide range of industrial, technology, and biomedical applications, namely for adsorption, ultrafiltration, packaging, conservation of historical artifacts, thermal insulation and fire retardation, energy extraction and storage, acoustics, sensorics, controlled drug delivery, and particularly for tissue engineering. Nanocellulose is promising for use in scaffolds for engineering of blood vessels, neural tissue, bone, cartilage, liver, adipose tissue, urethra and dura mater, for repairing connective tissue and congenital heart defects, and for constructing contact lenses and protective barriers. This review is focused on applications of nanocellulose in skin tissue engineering and wound healing as a scaffold for cell growth, for delivering cells into wounds, and as a material for advanced wound dressings coupled with drug delivery, transparency and sensorics. Potential cytotoxicity and immunogenicity of nanocellulose are also discussed.
