Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify and analyze the features and quality of self-management support of mobile applications available in Brazil for chronic low back pain in adults. METHOD A systematic review on the Apple Store® and Google Play® digital platforms. The Self-Management Support Assessment Tool scale was used to assess self-management support and the Institute for Healthcare Informatics Functionality Score scale was used to assess functionality. RESULTS Seventeen applications were selected, which included around seven self-management skills. The applications that met the majority of self-management support skills were Pathways, Branch, Pancea, Pain Navigator, and Curable. The Curable, Branch and MoovButh applications had the highest scores, with ten features on the functionality scale. CONCLUSION Some applications have the potential to complement in-person treatment in terms of validity, acceptability and clinical usefulness in pain management. However, barriers such as lack of partnership between healthcare providers and patients, limited evidence-based content, social support, cultural relevance, cost, language, security and privacy can limit their sustained use. Abstract
BACKGROUND Mobile health (mHealth) uses mobile technologies to promote wellness and help disease management. Although mHealth solutions used in the clinical setting have typically been medical-grade devices, passive and active sensing capabilities of consumer-grade devices like smartphones and activity trackers have the potential to bridge information gaps regarding patients' behaviors, environment, lifestyle, and other ubiquitous data. Individuals are increasingly adopting mHealth solutions, which facilitate the collection of patient-generated health data (PGHD). Health care professionals (HCPs) could potentially use these data to support care of chronic conditions. However, there is limited research on real-life experiences of HPCs using PGHD from consumer-grade mHealth solutions in the clinical context. OBJECTIVE This systematic review aims to analyze existing literature to identify how HCPs have used PGHD from consumer-grade mobile devices in the clinical setting. The objectives are to determine the types of PGHD used by HCPs, in which health conditions they use them, and to understand the motivations behind their willingness to use them. METHODS A systematic literature review was the main research method to synthesize prior research. Eligible studies were identified through comprehensive searches in health, biomedicine, and computer science databases, and a complementary hand search was performed. The search strategy was constructed iteratively based on key topics related to PGHD, HCPs, and mobile technologies. The screening process involved 2 stages. Data extraction was performed using a predefined form. The extracted data were summarized using a combination of descriptive and narrative syntheses. RESULTS The review included 16 studies. The studies spanned from 2015 to 2021, with a majority published in 2019 or later. Studies showed that HCPs have been reviewing PGHD through various channels, including solutions portals and patients' devices. PGHD about patients' behavior seem particularly useful for HCPs. Our findings suggest that PGHD are more commonly used by HCPs to treat conditions related to lifestyle, such as diabetes and obesity. Physicians were the most frequently reported users of PGHD, participating in more than 80% of the studies. CONCLUSIONS PGHD collection through mHealth solutions has proven beneficial for patients and can also support HCPs. PGHD have been particularly useful to treat conditions related to lifestyle, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, or in domains with high levels of uncertainty, such as infertility. Integrating PGHD into clinical care poses challenges related to privacy and accessibility. Some HCPs have identified that though PGHD from consumer devices might not be perfect or completely accurate, their perceived clinical value outweighs the alternative of having no data. Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare consumers require diverse resources to assist their navigation of complex healthcare interactions, however, these resources need to be fit for purpose. AIM In this study, we evaluated the utility, usability and feasibility of children, families and adults requiring long-term intravenous therapy using a recently developed mobile health application (App), intravenous (IV) Passport. DESIGN Multi-site, parallel, multi-method, prospective cohort study. METHODS A multi-site, multi-method study was carried out in 2020-2021, with 46 participants (20 adults, 26 children/family) reporting on their experiences surrounding the use of the IV Passport for up to 6 months. RESULTS Overall, utility rates were acceptable, with 78.3% (N = 36) using the IV Passport over the follow-up period, with high rates of planned future use for those still active in the project (N = 21; 73%), especially in the child/family cohort (N = 13; 100%). Acceptability rates were high (9/10; IQR 6.5-10), with the IV Passport primarily used for documenting new devices and complications. Thematic analysis revealed three main themes (and multiple subthemes) in the qualitative data: Advocacy for healthcare needs, Complexity of healthcare and App design and functionality. CONCLUSION Several recommendations were made to improve the end-user experience including 'how to' instructions; and scheduling functionality for routine care. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE The IV Passport can be safely and appropriately integrated into healthcare, to support consumers. IMPACT Patient-/parent-reported feedback suggests the Intravenous Passport is a useful tool for record-keeping, and positive communication between patients/parents, and clinicians. REPORTING METHOD Not applicable. PATIENT CONTRIBUTION Consumers reported their experiences surrounding the use of the IV Passport for up to 6 months.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the population ages, a plethora of digital and mobile health applications for assistance with independent living have emerged. Still unknown, however, is how older adults sustain the use of these applications. AIM This study sought to explore the experiences of older adults following their participation in a programme that combined the use of an mHealth application with proactive telecare nursing support. METHODS We employed a concurrent mixed-methods design for this study. The quantitative strand included a survey, whereas the qualitative strand included open-ended questions as part of the survey to understand the participants' experiences. Participants for this study were community-dwelling older adults who had taken part in an interventional study that sought to examine the effects of mHealth and nurse support. A convenience sampling approach was employed to recruit potential participants for this study. FINDINGS Fifty-five older adults participated. The majority expressed positive attitudes and satisfaction with the app and the nurses' support. The app and nurses' support helped participants to understand their health status and obtain health information. Reasons to halt app usage included technical issues and limited social support. CONCLUSION Mobile apps with professional follow-up support could potentially support older adults in the community, although emerging concerns need to be addressed to sustain long-term usage of these apps.

Abstract
PURPOSE Long Covid syndrome is a multiorgan condition with multiple sequelae affecting quality of life, capacity to work and daily activities. The advantages that new technologies can offer are presented as an opportunity in the current healthcare framework. OBJECTIVE This research aimed to explore people with Long Covid's experiences with a digital physiotherapy practice intervention, during four weeks. METHODS Qualitative semistructured interviews were conducted by video call. Thirty-two Long Covid participants were invited to join an in-depth interview once the intervention was completed. Participants were queried on their intervention experiences and perceptions, as well as any lifestyle changes made, as a result of receiving digital physiotherapy practice. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis. RESULTS In-depth qualitative analysis has revealed four themes that reflect participants' perceptions of digital physiotherapy intervention. The helpfulness of the exercises, interaction with the physiotherapist, the domestic use of technology and the future of digital health practice were the topics highlighted by Long Covid participants. Some improvements have been suggested including video sounds and the need to introduce face-to-face sessions. Participants stated that interventions were helpful and superior to printed exercise sheets, mobile phone apps and usual care received. This intervention did not present major barriers, highlighting the importance of personalized care and continuity in the provision of health services. CONCLUSION The digital physiotherapy practice is perceived by people with Long Covid as an appropriate method for the care of their health needs. Participants stated the need for this type of intervention in the public health system, where it would eliminate waiting lists, facilitate accessibility and improve existing care. PATIENT AND PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Participants contributed to the interpretation of the data acquired in the interview. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION Trial registration NCT04742946.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interventions focusing on epilepsy self-management (ESM) are vital for promoting the health of people living with epilepsy. E-technology and mobile health (mHealth) tools are becoming increasingly integrated into practice to promote self-management strategies for chronic diseases, enhance care delivery, and reduce health disparities. Management Information and Decision Support Epilepsy Tool (MINDSET), a bilingual decision support tool (available in English and Spanish), was found to be both feasible and effective in facilitating goal-based ESM in the clinic. PURPOSE To assess the experience of using MINDSET as an ESM intervention among Hispanic patients with epilepsy to inform future interventional studies. METHODS This study used a Qualitative Descriptive (QD) framework to provide a rich and straightforward description of patients' subjective experiences using MINDSET. Participants were enrolled in the intervention group of a larger parent study (RCT) to assess the efficacy of MINDSET among Hispanic People with Epilepsy (PWE). The purposive, convenient, criterion-based sample for this qualitative analysis comprised of 42 patients who agreed to participate in a semi-structured interview at the end of the larger RCT. This RCT was conducted between August 2017 and January 2019. Spanish and English-speaking Hispanic adult patients (n = 94) with epilepsy in Arizona (n = 53) and Texas (n = 41) were randomly assigned within 6 neurology clinics to treatment (MINDSET plus Usual Care, hereafter referred to as MINDSET; n = 46) and comparison (Usual Care Only; n = 48) conditions. RESULTS Patient demographics, epilepsy conditions, and ESM behavioral characteristics were representative of the intervention group. Study participants were Hispanic, mainly of Mexican descent (94 %), with a mean age of 39 years, mostly female (53 %), and most of the participants reported having had one or more seizures per month (54 %). The MINDSET intervention revealed five ESM themes: (1) Awareness and Realization of Epilepsy Self-Management, (2) Communication and Partnership with Health Care Providers HCP, (3) Epilepsy Self-Management and Quality of Life, (4) Seizure Control, and (5) Optimism and Agency. CONCLUSION The participants who used MINDSET as a self-management intervention reported an overall positive experience. Qualitative data in this study show that MINDSET is a valuable ESM tool for Hispanic patients with epilepsy. Findings from this qualitative study were consistent with results from a larger parent study that recognized MINDSET as an effective platform for improving epilepsy self-management adherence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Home assessment is a critical component of successful home modifications, enabling individuals with functional limitations to age in place comfortably. A high-quality home assessment tool should facilitate a valid and reliable assessment involving health care and housing professionals, while also engaging and empowering consumers and their caregivers who may be dealing with multiple functional limitations. Unlike traditional paper-and-pencil assessments, which require extensive training and expert knowledge and can be alienating to consumers, mobile health (mHealth) apps have the potential to engage all parties involved, empowering and activating consumers to take action. However, little is known about which apps contain all the necessary functionality, quality appraisal, and accessibility. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the functionality, overall quality, and accessibility of mHealth home assessment apps. METHODS mHealth apps enabling home assessment for aging in place were identified through a comprehensive search of scholarly articles, the Apple (iOS) and Google Play (Android) stores in the United States, and fnd.io. The search was conducted between November 2022 and January 2023 following a method adapted from PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Reviewers performed a content analysis of the mobile app features to evaluate their functionality, overall quality, and accessibility. The functionality assessment used a home assessment component matrix specifically developed for this study. For overall quality, the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) was used to determine the apps' effectiveness in engaging and activating consumers and their caregivers. Accessibility was assessed using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 (A and AA levels). These 3 assessments were synthesized and visualized to provide a comprehensive evaluation. RESULTS A total of 698 apps were initially identified. After further screening, only 6 apps remained. Our review revealed that none of the apps used thoroughly tested assessment tools, offered all the functionality required for reliable home assessment, achieved the "good" quality threshold as measured by the MARS, or met the accessibility criteria when evaluated against WCAG 2.1. However, DIYModify received the highest scores in both the overall quality and accessibility assessments. The MapIt apps also showed significant potential due to their ability to measure the 3D environment and the inclusion of a desktop version that extends the app's functionality. CONCLUSIONS Our review revealed that there are very few apps available within the United States that possess the necessary functionality, engaging qualities, and accessibility to effectively activate consumers and their caregivers for successful home modification. Future app development should prioritize the integration of reliable and thoroughly tested assessment tools as the foundation of the development process. Furthermore, efforts should be made to enhance the overall quality and accessibility of these apps to better engage and empower consumers to take necessary actions to age in place.

Abstract
The integration of shared decision-making (SDM) into undergraduate oncology education represents a critical evolution in medical pedagogy, reflecting the growing complexity and patient-centric focus of contemporary healthcare. This paper introduces a comprehensive pedagogical framework designed to embed SDM within the undergraduate medical curriculum, particularly in oncology, where the multiplicity of treatment options and their profound impact on patient life underscore the necessity of this approach. Grounded in a systematic literature review and aligned with established educational theories, this framework proposes twelve strategic approaches to cultivate future physicians proficient in both clinical acumen and patient-collaborative decision-making. The framework emphasizes real-world clinical experience, role-playing, case studies, and decision aids to deepen students' understanding of SDM. It advocates for the development of communication skills, ethical deliberation, and cultural competence, recognizing the multifaceted nature of patient care. The inclusion of patient narratives and evidence-based decision-making further enriches the curriculum, offering a holistic view of patient care. Additionally, the integration of digital tools within the SDM process acknowledges the evolving technological landscape in healthcare. The paper also addresses challenges in implementing this framework, such as curricular constraints and the need for educator training. It underscores the importance of continual evaluation and adaptation of these strategies to the dynamic field of medical education and practice. Overall, this comprehensive approach aims not only to enhance the quality of oncological care but also to prepare medical students for the complexities of modern medicine, where patient involvement in decision-making is both a necessity and an expectation.

Abstract
Background Mobile health has enormous potential in healthcare due to the increasing use of mobile phones in low- and middle-income countries; its effective deployment, uptake, and utilization may result in improved health outcomes, including a reduction in neonatal deaths. However, there is a suboptimal uptake of mobile health technologies among healthcare workers in low-resource settings like Nigeria, which are often context-specific. Objective To investigate healthcare workers' perceptions of mobile health technologies in public health facilities in Lagos, Nigeria. Method A qualitative study was conducted, and data were collected through six focus group discussions with 26 healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, and community health extension workers) from three public health facilities in Lagos, Nigeria. The collected data were analyzed using a thematic approach, where themes and subthemes were created. Results Although the participants acknowledged that mobile health enhances patient-provider communication and saves time, they identified altering of healthcare workers' routine practices, information overload, power and network failure, skepticism, lack of trust, and concerns over diagnostic accuracy as potential barriers to its uptake. Conclusion Addressing healthcare workers' perceptions of mobile health technologies may enhance the deployment and uptake of such solutions in Nigeria and similar low-resource settings. Developers and implementers of such can use them to create new or enhance existing mobile health solutions to better meet the needs and requirements of healthcare workers in low- to middle-income health settings, such as Lagos, Nigeria.

Abstract
Pediatric ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery is very common, and its outcomes may improve with family education. In this regard, mobile health (mHealth) applications (apps), which are on the rise due to digital transformation, can be beneficial in healthcare. This study outlines the user-centered design and development of a mHealth app (version 5.15.0) to support family caregivers during the perioperative process of pediatric ENT surgery. Conducted over two years in an Italian maternal and child health hospital (January 2020-May 2022), the study employed a participatory design method based on the Information System Research (ISR) framework and guided by the principles of Slow Medicine. Utilizing the Relevance, Rigor, and Design cycles of the ISR framework, the mHealth app's content, functionalities, and technical features were defined and developed. A committee of fifteen experts guided the process with input from 25 family caregivers and 24 healthcare providers enrolled in the study. The mHealth app content was structured around five crucial educational moments characterizing the ENT perioperative period, providing evidence-based information on surgical procedures, strategies for preparing children for hospitalization and surgery, pain management, and post-discharge care. The mHealth app featured a function that sends customized notifications to guide caregivers at specific perioperative stages. The development of mHealth apps by implementing a rigorous, participatory, and Slow design process can foster accessible and family-centered information and care in the field of maternal and child health and beyond.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the rapid development of mobile health (mHealth) technology, many health apps have been introduced to the commercial market for people with back pain conditions. However, little is known about their content, quality, approaches to care for low back pain (LBP), and associated risks of use. OBJECTIVE The aims of this research were to (1) identify apps for the self-management of LBP currently on the market and (2) assess their quality, intervention content, theoretical approaches, and risk-related approaches. METHODS The UK iTunes and Google Play stores were initially searched for apps related to the self-management of LBP in May 2022. A repeat search in June 2023 was conducted to ensure that any relevant new apps developed in the last year were incorporated into the review. A total of 3 keywords recommended by the Cochrane Back and Neck Group were used to search apps "low back pain," "back pain," and "lumbago." The quality of the apps was assessed by using the 5-point Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS). RESULTS A total of 69 apps (25 iOS and 44 Android) met the inclusion criteria. These LBP self-management apps mainly provide recommendations on muscle stretching (n=51, 73.9%), muscle strengthening (n=42, 60.9%), core stability exercises (n=32, 46.4%), yoga (n=19, 27.5%), and information about LBP mechanisms (n=17, 24.6%). Most interventions (n=14, 78%) are consistent with the recommendations in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. The mean (SD) MARS overall score of included apps was 2.4 (0.44) out of a possible 5 points. The functionality dimension was associated with the highest score (3.0), whereas the engagement and information dimension resulted in the lowest score (2.1). Regarding theoretical and risk-related approaches, 18 (26.1%) of the 69 apps reported the rate of intervention progression, 11 (15.9%) reported safety checks, only 1 (1.4%) reported personalization of care, and none reported the theoretical care model or the age group targeted. CONCLUSIONS mHealth apps are potentially promising alternatives to help people manage their LBP; however, most of the LBP self-management apps were of poor quality and did not report the theoretical approaches to care and their associated risks. Although nearly all apps reviewed included a component of care listed in the NICE guidelines, the model of care delivery or embracement of care principles such as the application of a biopsychosocial model was unclear.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to systematically identify, evaluate, and synthesize published qualitative research on the views and attitudes of adult cancer patients toward telemedicine and, consequently to better inform the future development of telemedicine technology and interventions. Methods A meta-synthesis review was conducted to identify qualitative studies that reported adult cancer patients' perceptions toward telemedicine applications using nine electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Wan Fang, VIP, and CNKI, from inception to November 2022. Quality appraisal was guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research. Data were synthesized using "thematic synthesis" to identify themes and concepts. Results A total of 3518 articles were retrieved, of which 23 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. These studies identified three key meta-themes and 11 key sub-themes: (1) Benefits of telemedicine: obtaining information and social support, maintaining the continuity of treatment, receiving professional assistance, having greater flexibility, and promoting physical and mental health; (2) Limitations of telemedicine: interference with normal life, privacy and security issues, auxiliary function issues, and increased psychological burden; (3) Expectations for future telemedicine: more personalized intervention, more specific and diverse information. Conclusions The study showed that the benefits and limitations coexisted in the process of telemedicine application among adult cancer patients. It is necessary to develop personalized applications that are better suited to the needs and characteristics of adult cancer patients. Future telemedicine interventions should focus on information diversification and provide patients with more diverse and effective information. Abstract
BACKGROUND Youth who experience traumatic events are at a substantially higher risk of engaging in substance use and sexual risk behaviors and problems (eg, HIV acquisition) than their non-trauma-exposed counterparts. Evidence-based substance use and risky sexual behavior prevention may reduce the risk of these outcomes. Trauma-focused mental health treatment provides a window of opportunity for the implementation of such preventive work with these youth. However, overburdened clinicians face challenges in adding prevention content while implementing evidence-based treatments. Mobile health (mHealth) tools can help reduce this burden in delivering prevention curricula. Trauma-Informed Prevention for Substance Use and Risky Sexual Behavior (TIPS) is an mHealth app that was developed to aid trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) clinicians in the implementation of an evidence-based risk behavior prevention curriculum. OBJECTIVE The goal of this paper is to describe the rationale for and development of the TIPS app and present the results of a mixed methods approach for the initial evaluation of its usability. METHODS Participants included clinicians (n=11), adolescents (n=11), and caregivers (n=10) who completed qualitative interviews and an adapted version of the Website Analysis and Measurement Inventory. RESULTS In total, 4 overarching themes emerged from the participants' answers to the qualitative interview questions, demonstrating a generally positive response to the app. The themes were (1) strength of app content, (2) suggestions about app content, (3) esthetics and usability, and (4) benefits to the patient and session implementation. Clinicians, adolescents, and caregivers all agreed that the content was very relevant to adolescents and used examples and language that adolescents could relate to. All 3 groups also discussed that the content was comprehensive and addressed issues often faced by adolescents. All 3 groups of users made suggestions about the esthetics, which mostly comprised suggestions to change the font, color, or pictures within the app. Of all the groups, adolescents were most positive about the esthetics and usability of the app. Results from the Website Analysis and Measurement Inventory further illustrated the users' favorable reaction to the TIPS app, with 100% (11/11) of clinicians, 100% (10/10) of caregivers, and most adolescents (7/11, 64%) selecting strongly agree or somewhat agree to the following statement: "This app has much that is of interest to me." Adolescents generally found the app easier to use than did caregivers and clinicians. CONCLUSIONS The TIPS app shows promise as an mHealth tool for TF-CBT clinicians to integrate evidence-based substance use, risky sexual behavior, and HIV prevention during treatment. Future research, including a randomized controlled trial comparing TF-CBT implementation with and without the inclusion of the app, is necessary to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of the app in reducing the risk of substance use and risky sexual behavior among trauma-exposed adolescents. Abstract
Objective Delay discounting denotes the tendency for humans to favor short-term immediate benefits over long-term future benefits. Episodic future thinking (EFT) is an intervention that addresses this tendency by having a person mentally "pre-experience" a future event to increase the perceived value of future benefits. This study explores the feasibility of using mobile health (mHealth) technology to deliver EFT micro-interventions. Micro-interventions are small, focused interventions aiming to achieve goals while matching users' often limited willingness or capacity to engage with interventions. We aim to explore whether EFT delivered as digital micro-interventions can reduce delay discounting, the users' perceptions, and if there are differences between regular EFT and goal-oriented EFT (gEFT), a variant where goals are embedded into future events. Method A randomized study was conducted with 208 participants allocated to either gEFT, EFT, or a control group for a 21-day study. Results Results indicate intervention groups when combined achieved a significant reduction of Δ log k = - .80 in delay discounting (p = .017 ) compared to the control. When split into gEFT and EFT separately only the reduction of Δ log k = .96 in EFT delay discounting was significant (p = .045 ). We further explore and discuss thematic user perceptions. Conclusions Overall, user perceptions indicate gEFT may be slightly better for use in micro-interventions. However, perceptions also indicate that audio-based EFT micro-interventions were not always preferable to users, with findings suggesting that future EFT micro-interventions should be delivered using different forms of multimedia based on user preference and context and supported by other micro-interventions to maintain interest.

Abstract
Objective Chronic low back pain places a significant burden on healthcare services and sufferers. Clinical guidelines state that it is a condition that requires self-management. This realist synthesis explores how a mobile app could help people to self-manage chronic low back pain. Method Six databases and several non-academic sources were searched. In addition, nineteen realist interviews were conducted with stakeholders. Sources were selected and appraised for relevancy, richness, and rigour. Data was coded with analytical memos making retroductive inferences. Causal explanations were presented in context-mechanism-outcome configurations to form three programme theories. Results Data from 57 sources was synthesised to create 16 context-mechanism-outcome configurations and presented as three refined programme theories. The findings suggest people need to feel believed before they will engage with a self-management app. For those who feel abandoned by the healthcare service, a self-management app for chronic low back pain can be a valuable source of ongoing support and reduce feelings of social isolation. Conclusion A self-management app, if introduced appropriately and as adjunct to care, can be an empowering tool to self-manage chronic low back pain. Innovation Using input from key stakeholders enhances our understanding of the hidden generative mechanisms underpinning a programme's success or failure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient-generated health data (PGHD) are data collected through technologies such as mobile devices and health apps. The integration of PGHD into health care workflows can support the care of chronic conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Patients are often willing to share data with health care professionals (HCPs) in their care team; however, the benefits of PGHD can be limited if HCPs do not find it useful, leading patients to discontinue data tracking and sharing eventually. Therefore, understanding the usefulness of mobile health (mHealth) solutions, which provide PGHD and serve as enablers of the HCPs' involvement in participatory care, could motivate them to continue using these technologies. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to explore the perceived utility of different types of PGHD from mHealth solutions which could serve as tools for HCPs to support participatory care in MS. METHOD A mixed-methods approach was used, combining qualitative research and participatory design. This study includes three sequential phases: data collection, assessment of PGHD utility, and design of data visualizations. In the first phase, 16 HCPs were interviewed. The second and third phases were carried out through participatory workshops, where PGHD types were conceptualized in terms of utility. RESULTS The study found that HCPs are optimistic about PGHD in MS care. The most useful types of PGHD for HCPs in MS care are patients' habits, lifestyles, and fatigue-inducing activities. Although these subjective data seem more useful for HCPs, it is more challenging to visualize them in a useful and actionable way. CONCLUSION HCPs are optimistic about mHealth and PGHD as tools to further understand their patients' needs and support care in MS. HCPs from different disciplines have different perceptions of what types of PGHD are useful; however, subjective types of PGHD seem potentially more useful for MS care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mobile health (mHealth) technology has great potential for addressing the epidemic of chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs) by assisting health providers (HPs) with managing these diseases. However, there is currently limited evidence regarding the acceptance of mHealth among HPs, which is a key prerequisite for harnessing this potential. OBJECTIVE This review aimed to investigate the perceptions and experiences of HPs regarding the barriers to and facilitators of mHealth use for CNCDs. METHODS A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE (via Ovid), Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library (via Ovid) for studies that assessed the perceptions and experiences of HPs regarding the barriers to and facilitators of mHealth use for CNCDs. Qualitative studies and mixed methods studies involving qualitative methods published in English were included. Data synthesis and interpretation were performed using a thematic synthesis approach. RESULTS A total of 18,242 studies were identified, of which 24 (0.13%) met the inclusion criteria. Overall, 6 themes related to facilitators were identified, namely empowering patient self-management, increasing efficiency, improving access to care, increasing the quality of care, improving satisfaction, and improving the usability of the internet and mobile software. Furthermore, 8 themes related to barriers were identified, namely limitation due to digital literacy, personal habits, or health problems; concern about additional burden; uncertainty around the value of mHealth technology; fear of medicolegal risks; lack of comfortable design and experience; lack of resources and incentives; lack of policy guidance and regulation; and worrisome side effects resulting from the use of mHealth. CONCLUSIONS This study contributes to the understanding of the beneficial factors of and obstacles to mHealth adoption by HPs for CNCDs. The findings of this study may provide significant insights for health care workers and policy makers who seek ways to improve the adoption of mHealth by HPs for CNCDs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ways to motivate and support patients in being physically active after bariatric surgery are needed. This trial was aimed at evaluating the effect of using a smartphone application targeting physical activity during 12 weeks on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA, primary outcome) and secondary outcomes of inactivity, light physical activity (LPA), body mass index (BMI), and percent total weight loss (%TWL) after bariatric surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from a randomized controlled trial comprising 146 patients (79.5% women) undergoing bariatric surgery was analyzed. Mean age and BMI pre-surgery were 40.9 years and 40.5 kg/m2, respectively. Participants were randomized 1:1 to an intervention or a control group. Physical activity and body weight were objectively measured at baseline pre-surgery and post-surgery follow-ups after 6 weeks (weight only), 18 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year. Linear mixed models were fitted to assess longitudinal differences in outcomes between the groups. RESULTS A significant effect of the intervention (group-by-time interaction 16.2, 95% CI 3.5 to 28.9) was seen for MVPA at 18 weeks; the intervention group had increased their MVPA since baseline, while the control group had decreased their MVPA. The control group had lowered their BMI approximately 1 kg/m2 more than the intervention group at follow-up after 18 weeks and 12 months, yet, mean BMI did not differ between the groups. No intervention effect was seen on inactivity, LPA, or %TWL. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that use of a smartphone application targeting physical activity may have the potential to promote short-term MVPA post bariatric surgery. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Technology has substantial potential to transform and extend care for persons with chronic pain, a burdensome and costly condition. To catalyze the development of impactful applications of technology in this space, we developed the Pain Tech Landscape (PTL) model, which integrates pain care needs with characteristics of technological solutions. METHODS Our interdisciplinary group representing experts in pain and human factors research developed PTL through iterative discussions. To demonstrate one potential use of the model, we apply data generated from a narrative review of selected pain and technology journals (2000-2020) in the form of heat map overlays, to reveal where pain tech research attention has focused to date. RESULTS The PTL comprises three two-dimensional planes, with pain care needs on each x axis (measurement to management) and technology applications on the y axes according to a) user agency (user- to system-driven), b) usage time frame (temporary to lifelong), and c) collaboration (single-user to collaborative). Heat maps show that existing applications reside primarily in the "user-driven/management" quadrant (e.g., self-care apps). Examples of less developed areas include artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (i.e., Internet-linked household objects), and collaborative/social tools for pain management. CONCLUSIONS Collaborative development between the pain and tech fields in early developmental stages using the PTL as a common language could yield impactful solutions for chronic pain management. The PTL could also be used to track developments in the field over time. We encourage periodic reassessment and refinement of the PTL model, which can also be adapted to other chronic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the increasing digitalization of the health sector, more and more mobile health (mHealth) apps are coming to the market to continuously collect and process sensitive health data for the benefit of patients and providers. These technologies open up new opportunities to make the health care system more efficient and save costs but also pose potential threats such as loss of data or finances. OBJECTIVE This study aims to present an empirical review and adaptation of the extended privacy calculus model to the mHealth domain and to understand what factors influence the intended usage of mHealth technologies. METHODS A survey study was conducted to empirically validate our model, using a case vignette as cover story. Data were collected from 250 German participants and analyzed using a covariance-based structural equation model. RESULTS The model explains R2=79.3% of the variance in intention to use. The 3 main factors (social norms, attitude to privacy, and perceived control over personal data) influenced the intention to use mHealth apps, albeit partially indirectly. The intention to use mHealth apps is driven by the perceived benefits of the technology, trust in the provider, and social norms. Privacy concerns have no bearing on the intention to use. The attitude to privacy has a large inhibiting effect on perceived benefits, as well as on trust in the provider. Perceived control over personal data clearly dispels privacy concerns and supports the relationship of trust between the user and the provider. CONCLUSIONS Based on the privacy calculus, our domain-specific model explains the intention to use mHealth apps better than previous, more general models. The findings allow health care providers to improve their products and to increase usage by targeting specific user groups.

Physician informaticists from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Electronic Health Record Advisory Group offer 10 guiding principles to consider when contemplating, building, or refining an ePRO program for patients with cancer.

Abstract
Oral diseases are largely preventable. However, as the number of older adults is expected to increase, along with the high cost and various barriers to seeking continuous professional care, a sustainable approach is needed to assist older adults in maintaining their oral health. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies may facilitate oral disease prevention and management through oral health education. This review aims to provide an overview of existing evidence on using mHealth to promote oral health through education among older adults. A literature search was performed across five electronic databases. A total of five studies were identified, which provided low to moderate evidence to support using mHealth among older adults. The selected studies showed that mHealth could improve oral health management, oral health behavior, and oral health knowledge among older adults. However, more quality studies regarding using mHealth technologies in oral health management, oral health behavior, and oral health knowledge among older adults are needed.

Abstract
There has been an increase in the number of healthcare-related applications targeted at patients for use on mobile phones. With an increasing proportion of the population using such applications, it is important to understand the associated limitations, safety concerns and challenges of legalisation. This article explores the impact of these applications on frontline care and patient wellbeing, evaluating the literature surrounding the benefits and challenges of patient-targeted mobile applications in health care and analysing the limitations of existing research. The proclaimed benefits of such applications are not always evidence based. Furthermore, many healthcare applications are created by laypeople and not validated by healthcare authorities, creating a potential to cause patient harm. Further research is needed to identify long-term effects on both healthcare systems and individuals' psychosocial wellbeing. However, research in this field often lacks a universal perspective and may be influenced by underlying financial motives to promote use of the applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Side effects of breast cancer treatment may persist long into survivorship, reducing quality of life (QOL) in patients with breast cancer and survivors. There is growing evidence for the use of digital health technologies, such as mobile apps, to support self-management, decrease symptom burden, and improve QOL in patients with cancer. However, an updated overview of the effects of mobile apps on QOL and well-being in patients with breast cancer and survivors is needed. OBJECTIVE The aim of this review was to provide an overview of breast cancer-specific, mobile app-driven lifestyle or behavioral interventions in patient care through to survivorship and their impact on QOL and mental well-being. METHODS A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted to identify relevant studies. The inclusion criteria were limited to original studies involving a trial of a mobile app-driven lifestyle or behavioral intervention for patients with breast cancer or survivors and using QOL or well-being measures. The results of the studies that met the inclusion criterion were then synthesized in text and table format. The quality of the evidence was assessed with the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. RESULTS A total of 17 studies with the number of participants ranging from 23 to 356 met the inclusion criterion. Of the 17 reviewed studies, 7 (41%) delivered an app-only intervention, and 10 (59%) combined an app with additional supporting materials, such as SMS text messaging, telecoaching, wearables, or printed materials. Among the 17 reviewed studies, 6 (35%) focused on aiding patients with breast cancer during the active treatment phase (excluding ongoing hormone therapy), whereas the remaining 11 (65%) focused on survivorship. The majority of the studies (14/17, 82%) observed some positive effects on QOL or well-being measures. CONCLUSIONS The results of the review indicate that mobile apps are a promising avenue for improving QOL and well-being in breast cancer care. Positive effects were observed in patients undergoing active treatment in all reviewed studies, but effects were less clear after chemotherapy and in long-term survivors. Although lifestyle and behavioral digital interventions are still being developed, and further research should still be pursued, the available data suggest that current mobile health apps aid patients with breast cancer and survivors.

Abstract
This study evaluated the quality and usefulness of interactive mobile health (mHealth) applications (apps) for adults with cancer. The PRISMA guidelines were followed to add rigor to the search, as well as to the data collection and analysis. The apps available in the most used app stores (Google Play and Apple) with interactive tailored features were identified. To supplement this, a Google web search was also conducted. The apps were evaluated for their quality using the validated Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS) and for their usefulness using a checklist of end users' desired features derived from the literature. The searches returned 3046 apps and 17 were retained for evaluation. The average quality score of the apps across the sample was 3.62/5 (SD 0.26, range: 3.14-4.06), with Outcomes4me scoring the highest. On average, the apps scored 50% (SD 2.5, range: 31-88%) on the usefulness checklist, with Cancer.net scoring the highest. The lowest-scoring categories were communications features on the usefulness checklist and "information" on the MARS, indicating areas for future work. The findings identified the apps of an acceptable quality and usefulness that could be recommended to those with cancer.

Abstract
Patient engagement is currently considered the cornerstone of a revolution in healthcare for its positive impact on health outcomes, health behaviors and healthcare costs. Patient engagement is focused on personalized care to consumers through providing knowledge, skills and confidence. Mobile health (mHealth) applications are an innovative means to facilitate patient engagement. Nevertheless, the extent to which the current mHealth applications are designed to engage patients in managing their chronic diseases is unclear. This paper aims to identify the Persuasive System Design (PSD) features present in current mHealth applications that increased the engagement of patients with chronic diseases. This review also aims to identify patient engagement-related outcomes of these features. This paper conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to find relevant studies published from all years up to 2020 through six databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cinahl plus with full text, MEDLINE with full text, and Cochrane Library (Central register of controlled trials). The database search returned 4939 articles; after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the number of included articles for the final review was 13. A qualitative content analysis was performed to identify PSD model features and their patient engagement-related outcomes. The quality assessment has been done through the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for RCTs. The systematic literature review and meta-analysis identified eleven PSD features that can increase patient engagement through using mHealth applications. The identified PSD features have been shown to have various patient engagement-related outcomes. Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs) were combined with the identified PSD features. This paper identified persuasive features of mHealth application design that influence the engagement of patients with chronic diseases toward changing their behavior. The impact of these features is also analyzed in this review. The results show that an mHealth technology-mediated patient engagement model is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The advancements and abundance of mobile phones and portable health devices have created an opportunity to use mobile health (mHealth) for population health systems. There is increasing evidence for the feasibility and acceptance of mHealth with Indigenous populations. Providing a synthesis of qualitative findings of mHealth with Indigenous populations will gain insights into the strengths and challenges to mHealth use in Indigenous populations. OBJECTIVE This review aimed to identify and synthesize qualitative data pertaining to the experiences and perceptions of mHealth from the perspectives of end users (patients and service providers) living in the colonial settler democracies of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the Pacific Islands, and the Sápmi region of northern Europe. METHODS In May 2021, systematic searches of peer-reviewed, scientific papers were conducted across the 5 databases of PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Qualitative or mixed method studies were included where a mHealth intervention was the primary focus for responding to health challenges with Indigenous populations. Two authors independently screened papers for eligibility and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. A meta-aggregative approach was used to analyze the findings of included studies. RESULTS Seventeen papers met the eligibility criteria, 8 studies with patients, 7 studies with service providers, and 2 studies that included both patients and service providers. Studies were conducted in Australia (n=10), Canada (n=2), New Zealand (n=2), Papua New Guinea (n=1), the United States (n=1), and Samoa (n=1). Our interpretation of these qualitative findings shows commonalities between Indigenous patients' and service providers' perceptions of mHealth. We summarize our findings in six themes: (1) mHealth literacy, (2) mHealth as a facilitator for connection and support, (3) mHealth content needed to be culturally relevant, (4) mHealth security and confidentiality, (5) mHealth supporting rather than replacing service providers, and (6) workplace and organizational capacity. CONCLUSIONS This research suggests that mHealth can meet the needs of both patients and service providers when the mHealth intervention is culturally relevant, accounts for digital and health literacy, incorporates interactive components, is supported by workplaces, fits into health provider workflows, and meets security and confidentiality standards. Future mHealth research with Indigenous populations should partner with key representatives (eg, patients, service providers, and executive leaders) in the mHealth design appropriate to the purpose, people, setting, and delivery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) surgery is common in children, but hospitalisation, surgery, and home care after discharge are stressful experiences for young patients and their family caregivers. Findings from literature highlight a lack of time in hospitals to support ORL surgery children and their caregivers through the perioperative process, along with the risks of caregivers' autonomous web or social media resources investigation. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile health application with content to support ORL patients and their caregivers in the perioperative period to reduce caregiver anxiety and child distress compared to standard care. METHODS An open-label, two-arm randomised control trial design is being adopted. The intervention consists of a mobile health application with content to support ORL patients and their caregivers during the perioperative period. One hundred eighty participants will be enrolled and randomly assigned to the experimental group using the mHealth application or the control group. The control group receives standard information and education about the ORL perioperative period from healthcare providers orally or through brochures. The primary outcome is the difference between the intervention and control groups in preoperative caregiver state anxiety. Secondary outcome measures include children's distress before surgery and family preparation for hospitalisation. DISCUSSION The results of this study will be critical to the implementation of a new and safe model for the management of care and education in paediatrics. This model can achieve positive organisational and health outcomes by supporting continuity of care and empowering citizens to have informed participation and satisfaction in paediatric health promotion and management. Abstract
Mobile eHealth apps are becoming increasingly important tools in healthcare management, capable of providing education and support at any time. There is little knowledge about surgical patients' appreciation and use of these apps. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a user-friendly medical app (PIA; Patient Information Assistant) for providing individual patient information before and after inpatient urological surgery. Twenty-two patients aged 35 to 75 years were provided with timely information, push notifications, and personalized agendas (e.g., date of presentation, time of surgery, time of doctor's consultation, imaging appointment) via the PIA app. Of the 22 patients, 19 evaluated the PIA app in terms of usage and usability, benefits, and potential for improvement. Of the study participants, 95% did not need any assistance to use the app, 74% confirmed that the PIA app made them feel better informed and more satisfied with their hospital stay, and 89% stated that they would like to re-use the PIA app and support the general use of medical apps in healthcare. Thus, we created an innovative digital health information tool, allowing targeted support for doctor-nurse-patient communication and offering great potential for patient support before and after surgery. Our study revealed that use of an app during the surgical hospital stay is readily accepted and benefits patients by acting as an additional informative tool.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of mobile health (mHealth) applications, which provide opportunities to improve health and lessen health inequalities, is increasing. Studies assessing the readiness and ability of patients in Malaysia with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to use mobile phone apps to manage their health are limited. AIMS This study aimed to assess the readiness and ability to use mHealth apps among patients with CKD in north-east Peninsular Malaysia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was undertaken, using a convenience sample of 100 CKD medical inpatients in a tertiary teaching hospital. A structured, self-administered questionnaire on readiness and ability to use mHealth apps was adopted. FINDINGS Nearly one in five patients (18%) actively used health applications. More than three-quarters (77%) were aged >40 years and a similar proportion were ready to use mHealth apps (78%), and nearly half (46%) were confident about connecting their device to wifi. There was a correlation between ability and readiness to use mHealth apps (r=0.4; P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Fewer than half of participants had a good command of mHealth applications. Therefore, support on the use of these apps is needed, and healthcare managers need to consider this.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adjusting to new or additional parenting responsibilities increases stress and affects parental well-being. Existing research has highlighted both parents' desire to receive more support. It has also been found that receiving sufficient social support enhances parenting outcomes. With the increasing popularity of mobile health apps, a Supportive Parenting App (SPA) intervention was developed to fulfill the support needs of parents during the perinatal period. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the SPA on parental outcomes during the perinatal period. METHODS A 2-group pretest and repeated posttest randomized controlled trial was conducted wherein 200 couples (N=400 mothers and fathers) were recruited from 2 public health care institutions in Singapore. Parents were randomly assigned to intervention (100/200, 50%) or control (100/200, 50%) groups. The SPA intervention consisted of a mobile app-based psychoeducation and peer support program to support parents from pregnancy to 6 months post partum. The outcome measures included postnatal depression, anxiety, parental bonding, parental self-efficacy, perceived social support, and parenting satisfaction. Data were collected at baseline (at >24 weeks of gestation-age of viability in Singapore) and at the first, second, fourth, sixth, ninth, and 12th month post partum. Linear mixed models were used to compare parental outcomes between the groups, and a linear mixed model for repeated measures was used to examine within-group changes. RESULTS Parents in the intervention group mostly showed better outcomes compared with those in the control group. Parents in the intervention group had higher perceived social support than those in the control group at the first (effect size=1.59, 95% CI 0.38-2.80; Cohen standardized effect size=1.31; P=.01), second (effect size=1.98, 95% CI 1.09-2.88; Cohen standardized effect size=2.21; P=.003), and fourth (effect size=2.57, 95% CI 1.62-3.51; Cohen standardized effect size=2.72; P=.048) months post partum. However, parents in the intervention group showed significantly poorer parental bonding (effect size=1.67, 95% CI 0.24-3.11; Cohen standardized effect size=1.16; P=.02). The other parental outcomes did not differ significantly between groups. The scores of mothers and fathers also differed significantly for all outcomes except parental self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS Parents in the intervention group generally fared better, especially regarding perceived social support. However, the lack of statistical significance in most outcomes showed the limited effectiveness of the SPA intervention, which may be because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Parental differences in outcome scores suggest that mothers and fathers have different support needs; therefore, interventions should be tailored accordingly. Further improvements and evaluations are needed to examine the effectiveness of the SPA intervention in enhancing parental outcomes. Despite statistically insignificant results, limitations should be considered to further improve mobile health app-based interventions such as SPA, as they could serve as reliable and convenient sources of support for parents. Abstract
Background New initiates on antiretroviral therapy (ART) are at high risk of treatment discontinuation, putting their health at risk. In low-resource settings, like Malawi, appropriate digital health applications must fit into local connectivity and resource constraints. Target users' perspectives are critical for app usability, buy-in and optimization. We describe the formative stages of the design of a two-way text-based (2wT) system of tailored reminders and adherence messages for new ART initiates and share results from key informant interviews with HCWs focused on app usability and acceptability. Methods Using a co-creation approach with clients, clinical, technical and evaluation teams and over app development, we held four informal user feedback sessions, a small pilot with 50 clients, and ten key informant (KIIs) to deepen our understanding of healthcare workers (HCWs) needs, acceptability and usability. Results Formative research informed the design of interactive client-to-HCW communication, refining of the language and timing of weekly text blast motivational messages and tailored client-specific visit reminders. Informal feedback from HCW stakeholders also informed educational materials to enhance 2wT client understanding of how to report transfers, request visit date changes and ask questions related to their visits. In KII, HCWs noted their appreciation for the co-creation process, believing that the participatory HCD process and responsive design team enabled the development of a highly acceptable and usable 2wT digital tool. HCWs also suggested future improvements to promote inclusion of clients of varying literacy levels and economic backgrounds as well as integrating with other health platforms to improve uptake of 2wT. Conclusions Inclusion of HCWs increased perceptions of app usability and acceptability among HCWs. HCWs believe that 2wT will improve on-time ART visit attendance and provide valuable early retention in care support. The co-creation approach appears successful in designing an app that will meet HCW needs and, therefore, support client adherence to visits.

Abstract
Pandemics such as COVID-19 pose serious threats to public health and disrupt the established systems for obtaining healthcare services. Mobile health (mHealth) apps serve the general public as a potential method for coping with these exogenous challenges. However, prior research has rarely discussed the antecedents and effects of mHealth apps and their use as a coping method during pandemics. Based on the technology acceptance model, empowerment theory, and event theory, we developed a research model to examine the antecedents (technology characteristics and event strength) and effects (psychological empowerment) of mHealth apps and their use. We tested this research model through a sequential mixed-method investigation. First, a quantitative study based on 402 Chinese mHealth users who used the apps during the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted to validate the theoretical model. A follow-up qualitative study of 191 online articles and reviews on mHealth during the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted to cross-validate the results and explain the unsupported findings of the quantitative study. The results show that (1) the mHealth app characteristics (perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use) positively affect mHealth app use; (2) mHealth app use positively affects the psychological empowerment of mHealth users; and (3) the characteristics of pandemic events (event criticality and event disruption) have positive moderating effects on the relationship between mHealth app characteristics and mHealth app use. This study explains the role of mHealth apps in the COVID-19 pandemic on the micro-level, which has implications for the ways in which mHealth apps are used in response to public pandemics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is a global public health issue, causing burden on healthcare system and increasing risk of mortality. Mobile applications (apps) can be a promising approach to facilitate diabetes self-management. An increasingly utilized approach to facilitate engagement with mobile health (mHealth) technology is to involve potential users in the creation of the technology. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to use co-design for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) self-management mHealth development. METHODS Three rounds of iterative rapid prototyping panel sessions were conducted with a total of 9 T2DM participants in an Asian setting between Oct 2020 and April 2021. The participants were recruited through convenience sampling. For each round, feedback was gathered through qualitative interviews, and the feedback was used as a reference by the development team to develop and test a more refined version of the app in the next round. Transcribed semi-structured interview data was analyzed thematically using an inductive approach. RESULTS Participants' ages ranged from 40 to 69 years. Data saturation was reached, with no new themes emerging from the data. During the sessions, the participants expressed a variety of concerns and feedback on T2DM self-management using EMPOWER app and raised suggestions on the features of ideal T2DM self-management app. Important features include 1) reminders and notifications for medications, 2) Bluetooth integration with glucometers and blood pressure machines to minimize manual entry, 3) enlarged local food database including information on sugar content and recommendations for healthier options, 4) one touch for logging of routine medications and favorite foods, 5) export function for data sharing with physicians. Overall inputs concerned aspects such as user-friendliness of the app, customization possibilities, and educational content for the features in the mobile app. CONCLUSION In this study, we explored users' opinions on a T2DM self-management mobile app using co-design approach. This study adds to the growing body of literature on co-designing behavioral mHealth interventions and can potentially guide researchers in mobile app design for other chronic conditions.

Abstract
Objectives Mobile health applications could be means of educating and changing behaviours of their users. Their features and qualities determine the sustainability of use. The FeverApp with two main features of information and documentation is a research-based app. In this observational cohort study, to evaluate the influential predictors of use, users' feedback on the FeverApp, were analyzed. Methods Feedback is given using a structured questionnaire, four Likert items and two open questions regarding positive and negative impressions, available via app menu. Conventional content analysis (inductive approach) on the two open questions was performed. Comments were grouped into 12 codes. These codes were grouped hierarchically in an iterative process into nine subcategories and lastly into two main categories 'format' and 'content'. Descriptive and quantitative analysis were performed. Results Out of 8243 users, 1804 of them answered the feedback questionnaire. The features of the app (N = 344), followed by the information aspect (N = 330) were most frequently mentioned. Documentation process (N = 226), request for new features or improvement of the current ones (N = 193), and functioning (N = 132) were also highlighted in users' feedback. App's ease of use, design and being informative were important for the users. The first impression of the app seems important as the majority of feedback were given during the first month of using the app. Conclusion In-app feedback function could highlight shortcomings and strengths of mobile health apps. Taking users' feedback into consideration could increase the chance of sustained use. Besides ease of use and clear, likeable designs, users want apps that serve their needs while saving time.

Abstract
Background Voluntary medical male circumcision (MC) is a biomedical HIV prevention method that requires post-operative follow-up for healing confirmation. Recent research found that a two-way texting (2wT) app providing SMS-based telehealth for MC patients was safe and reduced provider workload. We evaluated 2wT usability among MC clients in South Africa assigned the 2wT intervention within a larger randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 2wT safety and workload. Methods This quantitative usability study is within an RCT where 547 men used 2wT to interact with an MC provider via SMS. The sub-study involved the first 100 men assigned to 2wT who completed a usability survey 14 days after surgery. Acceptability was assessed through 2wT response rates of the 547 men. Regression models analyzed associations between age, wage, location, potential adverse events (AEs), and 2wT responses. Results Men assigned to 2wT found it safe, comfortable, and convenient, reporting time and cost savings. High response rates (88%) to daily messages indicated acceptability. Age, wage, and location didn't affect text responses or potential AEs. Conclusion 2wT for post-MC follow-up was highly usable and acceptable, suggesting its viability as an alternative to in-person visits. It enhanced confidence in wound self-management. This SMS-based telehealth can enhance MC care quality and be adapted to similar contexts for independent healing support, particularly for men.

Abstract
Background Telemonitoring of blood pressure (BP) may improve BP control. However, many patients are not using BP telemonitoring due to personal, technological, and health system barriers. Individuals are required to have electronic health literacy (e-HL), defined as knowledge and skills to use technology services effectively, such as BP telemonitoring. Objective The objective was to determine the facilitators and barriers experienced by patients with hypertension in telemonitoring of BP using the e-HL framework (e-HLF). Methods This study was a prospective mixed-methods study using a convergent design. We recruited a convenience sample of 21 patients with hypertension. The qualitative section was online or phone individual in-depth interviews based on the e-HLF, which has seven domains. The quantitative section was an online survey consisting of demographics, an e-HL questionnaire, and patient-provider communication preferences. A joint display was used in the mixed-methods analysis. Results Five themes including knowledge, motivation, skills, systems, and behaviors along with 28 subthemes comprising facilitators or barriers of BP telemonitoring were identified. The mixed-methods results showed concordance between the participants' e-HL status and their experiences in the ability to actively engage with BP monitoring and managing digital services (domain 3) of the e-HLF. Other e-HL domains showed discordance. Conclusion Patients may engage with BP telemonitoring when they feel the usefulness of concurrent access to telemonitoring services that suit their needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Climate change is projected to increase environmental health hazard risks through fire-related air pollution and increased airborne pollen levels. To protect vulnerable populations, it is imperative that evidence-based and accessible interventions are available. The environmental health app, AirRater, was developed in 2015 in Australia to provide information on multiple atmospheric health hazards in near real time. The app allows users to view local environmental conditions, and input and track their personal symptoms to enable behaviors that protect health in response to environmental hazards. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to develop insights into users' perceptions of engagement, comprehension, and trust in AirRater to inform the future development of environmental health apps. Specifically, this study explored which AirRater features users engaged with, what additional features or functionality needs users felt they required, users' self-perception of understanding app information, and their level of trust in the information provided. METHODS A total of 42 adult AirRater users were recruited from 3 locations in Australia to participate in semistructured interviews to capture location- or context-specific experiences. Participants were notified of the recruitment opportunity through multiple avenues including newsletter articles and social media. Informed consent was obtained before participation, and the participants were remunerated for their time and perspectives. A preinterview questionnaire collected data including age range, any preexisting conditions, and location (postcode). All participant data were deidentified. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis in NVivo 12 (QSR International). RESULTS Participants discussed app features and functionality, as well as their understanding of, and trust in, the information provided by the app. Most (26/42, 62%) participants used and valued visual environmental hazard features, especially maps, location settings, and hazard alerts. Most (33/42, 78%) found information in the app easy to understand and support their needs, irrespective of their self-reported literacy levels. Many (21/42, 50%) users reported that they did not question the accuracy of the data presented in the app. Suggested enhancements include the provision of meteorological information (eg, wind speed or direction, air pressure, UV rating, and humidity), functionality enhancements (eg, forecasting, additional alerts, and the inclusion of health advice), and clarification of existing information (eg, symptom triggers), including the capacity to download personal summary data for a specified period. CONCLUSIONS Participants' perspectives can inform the future development of environmental health apps. Specifically, participants' insights support the identification of key elements for the optimal development of environmental health app design, including streamlining, capacity for users to customize, use of real time data, visual cues, credibility, and accuracy of data. The results also suggest that, in the future, iterative collaboration between developers, environmental agencies, and users will likely promote better functional design, user trust in the data, and ultimately better population health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital health interventions may facilitate management of chronic conditions; however, no reviews have systematically assessed the effectiveness of dietary interventions delivered by digital health platforms for improving dietary intake and clinical outcomes for adults with diet-related chronic conditions. METHODS Databases CINAHL, CENTRAL, Embase and MEDLINE were searched from inception to April 2021 to identify controlled trials for dietary education delivered by digital health (mobile or electronic health) to adults with diet-related chronic conditions. Random effects analysis was performed for diet quality, food groups, nutrients and clinical outcomes. Screening, data extraction and quality checking were completed in duplicate. RESULTS Thirty-nine studies were included involving 7333 participants. Significant changes were found for Mediterranean diet adherence score (standardised mean difference [SMD] = 0.79; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.18 to 1.40), overall fruit and vegetable intake (mean difference [MD]: 0.63 serves/day; 95% CI = 0.27-0.98), fruit intake alone (MD = 0.58 serves/day; 95% CI = 0.39 to 0.77) and sodium intake (SMD = -0.22; 95% CI = -0.44 to -0.01). Improvements were also found for waist circumference [MD = -2.24 centimetres; 95% CI = -4.14 to -0.33], body weight (MD = -1.94 kg; 95% CI = -2.63 to -1.24) and haemoglobin A1c (MD = -0.17%; 95% CI = -0.29 to -0.04). Validity of digital assessment tools to measure dietary intake were not reported. The quality of evidence was considered to have low to moderate certainty. CONCLUSIONS Modest improvements in diet and clinical outcomes may result from intervention via digital health for those with diet-related chronic conditions. However, additional robust trials with better reporting of digital dietary assessment tools are needed to support implementation within clinical practice.

Abstract
Objective To investigate comfort level and preferences of automated reminder systems (mail, email, text message, phone call, patient-portal message, and/or smartphone application) to promote adherence to recommended therapies for patients seeking care for urinary incontinence (UI) at our urology clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. Methods Anonymous surveys were distributed in English to adult patients with UI from 4/2019-5/2019. Patient demographics, UI type, and access to and use of the Internet, smartphone and patient-portal were assessed. Using a Likert scale, patients indicated level of comfort with each reminder system and numerically ranked each system. Statistical analyses were performed to identify patient characteristics associated with reminder modality and determine significance in ranking of systems. Results Fifty-seven patients (67.3 ± 16.3 years) completed the survey with an 87% response rate. Text-message and phone call reminder modalities were ranked the highest compared to other modalities (p < 0.05). A Chi-squared test showed no correlation between preferred reminder system modality and type of incontinence, age, gender, race/ethnicity, or language spoken (p > 0.05). Internet usage and access significantly correlated with preference for smartphone application and patient-portal message reminder systems (p < 0.05). Conclusion Patients reported they were extremely comfortable with all communication modalities, except for smartphone applications in which patients were the least comfortable. The modalities most preferred by patients were phone call and text message and least preferred were patient portal and smart phone application. In conclusion, phone calls and text messages were the most preferred communication modality, with smart phone applications as the least comfortable. Abstract
Adherence to inhaled treatments is a complex challenge for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, it not only involves following the prescribed treatment plans but also administering the medications correctly. When using a dry powder inhaler (DPI), the inhalation flow is particularly critical. Patients frequently fail to use a rapid enough onset and fast enough inhalation when using DPIs. At the same time, there is increasing pressure on physicians to switch patients to DPIs, to minimise the environmental impact of pMDI propellants. This makes it critical to understand whether a patient will maintain or improve disease control by using their new inhaler correctly. However, it is challenging for health care professionals to understand how a patient behaves away from the clinic. Therefore, it would be beneficial to obtain real-world data through the use of monitoring tools, i.e., "smart inhalers". This paper reviews the technologies used to monitor DPIs, how effective they have been in a clinical setting, and how well these have been adopted by patients and health care providers.

Abstract
Background Adolescence is a period of emotional, mental, and physical change. To increase health seeking behaviors, reduce risky sexual behavior, and improve sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge, adolescents require support and access to SRH services. Providing evidence-informed SRH knowledge to adolescents in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) can be a challenge as they face unique barriers such as lack of confidentiality, fear of refusal, and stigma from cultural norms. Increasing availability of mobile apps necessitates a comprehensive evaluation of the quality and classification of these SRH mobile applications so that accurate and evidence-based information is reaching its users. Failure to provide SRH services can have damaging effects throughout their development. Objective Provide an overview of current adolescent SRH (ASRH) mobile applications targeting adolescents in LMICs by evaluating their quality and classifying their characteristics. Methods 21 search terms related to ASRH mobile apps was developed. These terms were searched in the Apple IOS store and Google Play stores. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to screen these apps. Resulting apps were assessed using the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS) tool. Data extracted was used to rank order each app and identify any gaps in quality. Results Search strategy yielded 2,165 mobile apps. Of these, only 8 were assessed using the MARS tool. Functionality subdomain scored highest at 4.6, while Information scored lowest at 2.5. None of the assessed apps contained information on the MARS items: Evidence base and Goals. Too Shy to Ask had the highest individual app mean score of 4.1, while e-SRHR scored lowest at 2.3. Conclusions The goal of this study is to classify and rate the quality of mobile apps designed to promote ASRH behaviors and knowledge in LMICs. Numerous apps were reviewed and all of them failed to provide evidence-based and goal oriented SRH information. Strengths include ease of use, navigation, and gestural designs. Weaknesses include evidence base, goals, willingness to pay, customization, and interactivity. These findings can be potentially used to guide future app development and educate decision makers responsible for policy changes.

Abstract
The advancement of mobile technologies has motivated countries around the world to aim for smarter health management to support senior citizens. However, the use of mobile health applications (mHealth apps) among senior citizens appears to be low. Thus, drawing upon user expectations, the present study examined user requirements for a senior-friendly mHealth application. A total of 74 senior citizens were interviewed to explore the difficulties they encounter when using existing mobile apps. This study followed Nielsen’s usability model to identify user requirements from five aspects, namely learnability, efficiency, memorability, error, and satisfaction. Based on the results, a guideline was proposed pertaining to usability and health management features. This guideline offers suggestions for mHealth app issues related to phrasing, menus, simplicity, error messages, icons and buttons, navigation, and layout, among others. The study also found that speech recognition technology can help seniors access information quickly. The proposed guideline and findings offer valuable input for software and app developers in building more engaging and senior-friendly mHealth apps.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Following the need for the prevention of noncommunicable diseases, mobile health (mHealth) apps are increasingly used for promoting lifestyle behavior changes. Although mHealth apps have the potential to reach all population segments, providing accessible and personalized services, their effectiveness is often limited by low participant engagement and high attrition rates. OBJECTIVE This study concerns a large-scale, open-access mHealth app, based in the Netherlands, focused on improving the lifestyle behaviors of its participants. The study examines whether periodic email prompts increased participant engagement with the mHealth app and how this effect evolved over time. Points gained from the activities in the app were used as an objective measure of participant engagement with the program. The activities considered were physical workouts tracked through the mHealth app and interactions with the web-based coach. METHODS The data analyzed covered 22,797 unique participants over a period of 78 weeks. A hidden Markov model (HMM) was used for disentangling the overtime effects of periodic email prompts on participant engagement with the mHealth app. The HMM accounted for transitions between latent activity states, which generated the observed measure of points received in a week. RESULTS The HMM indicated that, on average, 70% (15,958/22,797) of the participants were in the inactivity state, gaining 0 points in total per week; 18% (4103/22,797) of the participants were in the average activity state, gaining 27 points per week; and 12% (2736/22,797) of the participants were in the high activity state, gaining 182 points per week. Receiving and opening a generic email was associated with a 3 percentage point increase in the likelihood of becoming active in that week, compared with the weeks when no email was received. Examining detailed email categories revealed that the participants were more likely to increase their activity level following emails that were in line with the program's goal, such as emails regarding health campaigns, while being resistant to emails that deviated from the program's goal, such as emails regarding special deals. CONCLUSIONS Participant engagement with a behavior change mHealth app can be positively influenced by email prompts, albeit to a limited extent. Given the relatively low costs associated with emails and the high population reach that mHealth apps can achieve, such instruments can be a cost-effective means of increasing participant engagement in the stride toward improving program effectiveness.

Abstract
Increasingly, persons with self-reported health symptoms are using mobile health technologies to better understand, validate, and manage their symptoms. These off-the-shelf devices primarily utilize actigraphy to estimate sleep and activity. The purpose of this study was to describe qualitatively the experience of using a personal sleep monitoring device for sleep self-management in adults 65 years or older with self-reported sleep disturbances. This study followed a hybrid qualitative design using deductive and emergent coding derived from open-ended interviews (n = 25) after a period of 4 weeks using a wearable personal sleep monitoring device. Results expanded existing theoretical models on usability with the theme of personal meaning in the interaction between health and self-monitoring technology that were associated with age and technology use, privacy, and capability. Future studies for sleep health self-management and personally tailored interventions using personal sleep monitoring devices should continue to collect qualitative information in extending the understanding of user experience across different symptom clusters, such as sleep disturbances, that manifest more commonly in older age populations. This research is important for application in the use of mobile health technologies for nursing led health self-management interventions.

Abstract
Background Digital adherence technologies hold promise to improve patient-centered tuberculosis (TB) monitoring, yet few studies have incorporated direct adherence monitoring or assessed patients' experiences with these technologies. We explored acceptability, feasibility, and refinement needs of the TB Treatment Support Tools (TB-TSTs) intervention linking a mobile app, a urine drug metabolite test, and interactive communication with a treatment supporter. Methods This pilot study was a parallel-designed single-center randomized controlled trial with exit interviews. Newly diagnosed TB patients were randomized 1:1 using a treatment allocation button in the REDCap software preloaded with a random allocation sequence to usual care or usual care plus the TB-TSTs intervention from a respiratory medicine hospital in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina and followed for 6-months. Due to the nature of the intervention, blinding to the group allocation could not be achieved for the recruiter or patients. The treatment outcome data extractor was blinded to the group allocation of the participants. Intervention participants used the app to report self-administering medication, potential side effects, submit photos of the urine test, and interact with a treatment supporter. Outcomes were feasibility, acceptability, and treatment outcomes. Findings Forty-two patients were enrolled and evenly assigned to each group. Intervention participants submitted 147·2±58 (mean, SD) medication self-administration and 144·5±55 side effect reports out of 180 and 47.5±38·4 photos of the urine test out of 77. Treatment success for usual care was 81% [17/21] and 95% [20/21] for the TB-TSTs intervention. Thirty-three themes were identified within the main categories of motivation, what worked, issues experienced, and recommendations. Participants (n=12) rated it as 'easy to use' (4.57/5), 'would highly recommend to others' (4·43/5) and reported that access to the treatment support was a critical component. Recommendations included adding an alarm, appointment reminders, and off-line functionality. Interpretation Findings suggest that the TB-TSTs intervention was feasible and acceptable and further refinement and testing is warranted. Funding National Institute of Health K23NR017210.

Abstract
The midwifery continuity-of-care model improves the quality and safety of midwifery services and is highly dependent on the quality of communication and information. The service uses a semi-automated chatbot-based digital health media service defined with the new term "telemidwifery". This study aimed to explore the telemidwifery menu content for village midwives and pregnant women in the Purwakarta Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The qualitative research method was used to explore with focus group discussion (FGD). The data collection technique was purposive sampling. The research subjects were 15 village midwives and 6 multiparous pregnant women. The results of this study involved 15 characteristics of menu content: (1) Naming, (2) Digital Communication, (3) Digital Health Services, (4) Telemidwifery Features, (5) Digital Check Features, (6) Media Services, (7) Attractiveness, (8) Display, (9) Ease of Use, (10) Clarity of Instructions, (11) Use of Language, (12) Substances, (13) Benefits, (14) Appropriateness of Values, and (15) Supporting Components. The content characteristics of this telemidwifery menu were assigned to the ISO 9126 Model standards for usability, functionality, and efficiency. The conclusion is that the 15 themes constitute the characteristic menu content required within the initiation of telemidwifery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Consuming educational content, adhering to treatment plans and managing symptoms and side-effects can be overwhelming to new oncology patients. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to engage patients in conceptualization of enhanced clinic processes and digital health tools to support awareness and use of integrative oncology services. PATIENT INVOLVEMENT We engaged patients in participatory design to understand lived experiences surrounding use of integrative oncology services during and after conventional cancer treatment. METHODS Ten participatory design sessions were held with individual participants. Sessions began with patient story telling regarding diagnosis and paths to awareness and use of integrative oncology services. We then reviewed prototype mobile app screens to solicit feedback regarding digital health functionality to support patient navigation of symptom-alleviating options. RESULTS Oncology patients are active participants in the management of symptoms and side effects. Patients who utilize yoga, acupuncture, and massage report a need for earlier patient education about these services. Patients express interest in digital health tools to match symptoms to options for relief, provide access to searchable information, and facilitate streamlined access to in-person and remote services. DISCUSSION Patients co-produce wellbeing by seeking solutions to daily challenges and consuming educational content. Clinics can collaborate with patients to identify high priority needs and challenges. PRACTICAL VALUE Active collaboration with patients is needed to identify unmet needs and guide development of clinic processes and digital health tools to enhance awareness and use of IO services in conventional cancer care. Abstract
Background Physical activity and a diet that follows general recommendations can help to prevent noncommunicable diseases. However, most adults do not meet current recommended guidelines, and support for behavior change needs to be strengthened. There is growing evidence that shows the benefits of eHealth and mobile health (mHealth) services in promoting healthy habits; however, their long-term effectiveness is uncertain because of nonadherence. Objective We aimed to explore users’ perceptions of acceptability, engagement, and usability of eHealth and mHealth services that promote physical activity, healthy diets, or both in the primary or secondary prevention of noncommunicable diseases. Methods We conducted a systematic review with a narrative synthesis. We performed the literature search in PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL electronic databases in February 2021 and July 2021. The search was limited to papers published in English between 2016 and 2021. Papers on qualitative and mixed method studies that encompassed eHealth and mHealth services for adults with a focus on physical activity, healthy diet, or both in the primary or secondary prevention of noncommunicable diseases were included. Three authors screened the studies independently, and 2 of the authors separately performed thematic analysis of qualitative data. Results With an initial finding of 6308 articles and the removal of 427 duplicates, 23 articles were deemed eligible for inclusion in the review. Based on users’ preferences, an overarching theme—eHealth and mHealth services provide value but need to be tailored to individual needs—and 5 subthemes—interactive and integrated; varying and multifunctional; easy, pedagogic, and attractive; individualized and customizable; and reliable—emerged. Conclusions New evidence on the optimization of digital services that promote physical activity and healthy diets has been synthesized. The findings represent users’ perceptions of acceptability, engagement, and usability of eHealth and mHealth services and show that services should be personalized, dynamic, easily manageable, and reliable. These findings can help improve adherence to digital health-promoting services.
